ARE WE NOT NEW WAVE? - Modern Pop at the Turn of the 1980’s - Label:THEO CATEFORIS “Are We Not New Wave? is destined to become the definitive study of new wave music.—Mark Spicer, coeditor of Sounding Out PopNew wave emerged at the turn of the 1980s as a pop music movement cast in the image of punk rock’s sneering demeanor, yet rendered more accessible and sophisticated. Artists such as the Cars, Devo, the Talking Heads, and the Human League leapt into the Top 40 with a novel sound that broke with the staid rock clichés of the 1970s and pointed the way to a more modern pop style. In Are We Not New Wave? Theo Cateforis provides the first musical and cultural history of the new wave movement, charting its rise out of mid-1970s punk to its ubiquitous early 1980s MTV presence and downfall in the mid-1980s. The book also explores the meanings behind the music’s distinctive traits—its characteristic whiteness and nervousness; its playful irony, electronic melodies, and crossover experimentations. Cateforis traces new wave’s modern sensibilities back to the space-age consumer culture of the late 1950s/early 1960s. BOOKS & MAGS $10 SKU:13177

OUTSIDERS - BEAT LEGENDS (PHOTO SOUND BOOK) plus cd Label: PSEUDONYM For eighteen months five teenagers from Amsterdam held the pop world spellbound. The Outsiders were stars from the moment they outshone The Rolling Stones, when they appeared as their supporting act in the Brabanthallen in March 1966. With all that stardom entailed: hits, delirious fans and exaggerated newspaper headlines about their long hair and wild performances. But the bubble burst before singer Wally Tax's 21st birthday and The Outsiders split up. What remained is the memory of one of the best beat bands that The Netherlands has ever known. Beat Legends tells the story of The Outsiders in words and pictures, with wonderful photographic material, legendary record sleeves and tantalising newspaper cuttings. EMBER BEAT VOL 3 - VA After Tonight 66-67 - Label:FANTASTIC VOYAGE Third of three volumes detailing UK indie label Ember's releases from the sixties beat era. After Tonight concludes our survey of Ember's contribution to the beat scene. This release covers the years 1966 & 1967, when the beat scene was giving way to rock and psychedelia on one hand and teen-orientated pop on the other. Cover versions of both A Whiter Shade Of Pale (by Bobby Johnson & The Atoms) and The Theme From "The Monkees" (by The Peenuts) illustrate this divergence of markets. After Tonight serves up a track apiece by The Alleykatz, The Bats, Luvin Kind, Just Five and The People (who evolved into rock group Eire Apparent and recorded an album with Jimi Hendrix), concluding our reissue of tracks from the 1966 album Irelands Greatest Sounds: Five Top Groups From Belfasts Maritime Club. Elsewhere, styles range from the garage surf of The Clockwork Oranges to the club-friendly home-grown R&B sound of Bobby Johnson & The Atoms (whose contributions include a cover of the Otis Redding/Carla Thomas hit Tramp). Both singles by The Fadin Colours are included. The first is a cover of (Just Like) Romeo And Juliet, a US hit for The Reflections, while the second, the superior Be With Me, may never have got beyond acetate stage. Vocalist Ray Singer, later briefly a member of UK pop-psych band Nirvana, is represented by both sides of a single and a brace of album cuts. Pauls Troubles only released one single on Ember, but we have also drawn on previously unissued material. COMP CD $6 SKU:12988

EMBER POP 69-74- VA Rainy Day Mind ( 60s ) -Label:FANTASTIC VOYAGE Rainy Day Mind” is the first of two volumes surveying Ember’s pop repertoire from 1969 until the label’s demise at the end of the seventies. It comprises 21 tracks by artists ranging from obscure American singer Polly Niles to the internationally famous P J Proby, as well as ill-fated actor Alan Lake, Irish vocalist Lee Lynch, French pop star Black Swan and fuzz guitar-toting soul band Milt Matthews Inc. A clutch of projects including The Good Vibrations, The Good Ship Lollipop and Rusty Harness came to Ember courtesy of producer Mike Berry. The founding of US outlet Paramount-Ember in 1974, headed by music business veteran John Madara, brought albums by Denny Doherty (formerly of The Mamas And The Papas) and British all-girl glam rockers Mother Trucker into the fold. What these disparate sources all offer are fine performances of strong songs. Nor is there any shortage of collectables, topped by Davey Payne & The Medium Wave’s ‘A Walk In The Sunshine,’ which commands £50, and Blue Beard’s eponymous album, which only reached test pressing stage (£200), from which we have salvaged ‘Baby I Need You.’ Nice shrink-wrapped slip-case packaging COMP CD $6 SKU:16376

EMBER ROCK VOL 2 - VA Summer Turns to Autumn 69-72-Label:FANTASTIC VOYAGE British indie label Ember released a number of rock albums and singles between 1969 and 1972, which today are much sought after by collectors of psychedelic, progressive and folk rock sounds. Many of the best tracks from these are gathered on “Summer Turns To Autumn”. Foremost among the artists compiled here is progressive rock band Blonde On Blonde, represented by tracks from both of their Ember albums. Fantastic Voyage has salvaged two tracks from Blue Beard s album. An early songwriting/production project for Bob Welch, who next surfaced in Fleetwood Mac, the album was only released in Italy, but the single ‘Sly Willy’ was more widely available and is highly prized by collectors of funky rock. Tyrannosaurus Rex-style acoustic hippy duo Knocker Jungle and progressive folk group 9.30 Fly each managed one now highly collectable long player for the label. The remainder of the material ranges from the fuzzy psychedelic rock of Canadians The Dorians and the melodic folk rock of Paddy Maguire, backed by heavy friends Steve Winwood and Jerry Donahue (of Fotheringay), to the soul-rock fusion of Milt Matthews Inc, here interpreting a Blind Faith song, and a previously unissued folk rock rendition of ‘East Virginia’ by Polly Niles. “Summer Turns To Autumn” complement Fantastic Voyage’s existing, highly popular compilations of Ember Beat and Ember Pop, with no duplication of tracks. FILE UNDER MALE VOCAL- VA - Last copies- SAALE -Label:PSYCHIC CIRCLE (UK) The Golden Age of the Beat Balladeer. After enjoying countless compilation albums of psych, beat, garage, girl groups, instrumentals, soul, exotica etc., the Psychic Circle label now releases a compilation which concentrates on that most popular of '60s phenomena, the British male vocalist. These are great tracks and performances that can't really be considered beat, soul or psych, but at the same time conjure a similar sort of mental image. Solid, classy songs performed by great singers which readily evoke the sense of excitement and freshness prevalent in that decade. As legendary psych musician and Psychic Circle label-head, Nick Saloman (The Bevis Frond) expounds, "What I was trying to assemble for this album was a selection of quality male vocal, with a kind of pop/beat feel. The kind of thing you might have heard in any London discotheque alongside the beat groups, the Stateside soul-sounds, the groovy girls and burgeoning psych riffs. Nothing too MOR or fey, just cool guys doing what they did best. I reckon it's a long overdue examination of a hitherto overlooked genre. It doesn't really need a label, but if you want to give it one, just file under - male vocal." Artists include: Mickey Clarke, Jason Cord, Gerry Deville, Dominic Grant, Nicholas Hammond, Christian Ward, Graham Bell, Jerry Page, Dane Hunter, Brian Keith, Keith Powell, Don Adams, Neil Landon, Greg Hunter, Dave Walton, Danny Street, Dorian Gray, Rudi Bennett, Ronnie Jones, and James Royal. GIRL GROUP SOUNDS- Vol 10 The Early Years - Label:SHABOOM he Girl Group Sound: The Darlings Of The 1960's series of compilations on Sha-Boom is half way between the One Kiss Can Lead to Another: Girl Group Sounds Lost and Found boxset on Rhino and The Girls of Hideaway Heaven on Rare Rockin' Records because it combines some rare and hard to find girl group records with some easier to find sides. This series is more true to the "girl group sound" then the Rhino box (which took jaunts into the girl soul and girls in the garage sound along with the classic girl group sound), but has poorer bootleg like sound quality (the Rhino box had impeccable sound quality for recordings so old), and doesn't dig as deep and as obscure as the Rare Rockin' series.

The Girl Group Sound series seems like it was a blueprint for the Rhino box (they were released in 2003, while the Rhino box came out in late 2005), where some titles that could not be licensed were replaced with a wider spectrum of genres and solo artists. There's enough difference between each of these though that true girl group collectors won't be disappointed when picking up any and all of these collections. There's bound to be some titles you haven't yet heard. The hard part will be finding these now, since they're not available through the major retailers. Your best bet is to find it through the specialty shops or auction sites. But there's enough hard to find titles here that would make searching these out worth it, if you don't mind the bootleg quality and lack of liner note information. COMP CD $6 SKU:992014

GROOVE CLUB 2- VA Cambodia Rock Spectactular 70s rock w 36 page booklet w photos -SAALE -Label:LION Packaged in a deluxe casebook with a 36-page booklet filled with rare photos and the heart-wrenching stories of the most beloved artists in the Khmer Rock movement . Most of these tracks were recorded live, with traditional instruments finding a place alongside any keyboards or guitars that could be found. And yet, it was these experiments of Khmer rock musicians which transformed the nightlife of the Cambodian capital, Phnom Penh—and which many years later have seduced countless listeners around the world with their groovy sound. Alas, in 1975 came an entirely different type of transformation: the rise to power in Cambodia of the fanatical, anti-Western Khmer Rouge, led by Pol Pot. Within roughly four years, implementing their “concept of Year Zero,” Pot and his regime were responsible for the deaths of an estimated two million Cambodians, many in the notorious “killing fields.” Even the most famous and beloved Khmer musicians could not escape. Sinn Sisamouth (“the Emperor of Khmer Music”), Ros Sereysothea (“The Golden Voice of the Royal Capital”), and Pan Ron—all featured on this collection—met their deaths at the hands of the Khmer Rouge. Cambodian rock music is (rightfully) adored in Cambodia. The music is wild and anarchic, rhythmic and undulating (in an “Ethiopiques” way, we’d say), or sweet and lyrical, but always moving, and with that deep soulfulness (regardless of actual musical genre or style) that singles out the best music. We have assembled what we consider to be the most definitive collection of classic Cambodian rock music to appear thus far—without the later overdubs that confuse the mind, without the artificial speeding up of tracks that often has marred compilations over the years; what you’ll find here are crucial Khmer rock tracks, made available in the best possible sound, assembled with love and respect for the artists who made the Khmer rock scene as thrilling as we find it to be. And so, without further ado, welcome to “Cambodia Rock Spectactular!” COMP CD $15 SKU:12985

HE PUT THE BOMP- VA W unreleased tracks by RADIO MOSCOW, BLACK KEYS AND BUFFALO KILLERS Label:BOMP V.A. - He Put The Bomp in The Bomp : Greg Shaw. CD Import (Vivid Sound/Bomp)
Japanese release produced by Bomp records. Includes 23 PREVIOUSLY UNRELEASED songs. This is not a tribute album per se, but more of a remembrance of Greg Shaw and his unique perspective. We asked the bands to go into the studio and cut the cover song they felt was most in tune with the idea of the label and the result is a nice brew of garage punk, power pop and psychedelia that we think captures the spirit and sound of Bomp records. The Plimsouls and Lyres covered the Easybeats and the Outsiders respectively, the Black Keys surprised us with their rendering of the Cramps "I Can't Find My Mind", while the Dwarves and the Briefs sent their versions of punk classics by the Weirdos and the Zeros. We also got some nice surprises with the teaming up of Captain Sensible (The Damned) and the late Nikki Sudden for an acoustic cover of Iggy's "Kill City", Chris Wilson of the Flamin' Groovies joined the Barracudas to capture Rocky Erickson's "Two Headed Dog," and a Cleveland super group of sorts tabbed The Dukes Of Earls was formed with ex-members of the Dead Boys and the Stiv Bators' band. Also included is an amazing rendition of Rockin' Horse's classic "Don't You Ever Think I Cry" by Buffalo Killers (currently on tour with the Black Crowes), a cover of Spacemen 3 by The Warlocks, and much more. The Last even dug up for the occasion their previously unreleased rendering of Jonathan Richman's "Pablo Picasso" recorded back in 1977. There's a lot of cool music on this comp which we hope fans and collectors will enjoy.

"He Put the Bomp In the Bomp is an eclectic set that covers a fair amount of stylistic ground, but every track in one way or another speaks of a deep love for rock & roll, and it's not hard to imagine that Greg Shaw would have gotten a pretty big kick out of it." - All Music Guide

"This tribute compilation features new recordings from the label's alumni or poppers-in-arms covering Bomp faves. The Briefs buzz through the Zeros' She's Just A Girl On The Block. Scuzz-punks will love the Dwarves doing the Weirdos and Brooklyn's Stalkers slugging through Chunk Of Steel. Graying garage gods the Lyres, Barracudas and Nikki Corvette all do Shaw proud with their tracks. And some surging psychedelia (Morning After Girls, Warlocks) attest to Shaw's undeniable flower power beginnings. But the most effecting surprise may be Nikki Sudden and Captain Sensible's springy acoustic amble through Iggy Pop's Kill City, as the now deceased Sudden echoes the fun in the face of infinity spirit that marked the best of Greg Shaw's endeavors. - CMJ COMP CD $5 SKU:6941

Produced by Detroit studio legend Jim Diamond, who also plays bass and guitar, and features Dave Shettler (SSM) on drums, Eddie Baranek (The Sights) on lead guitar, and Nikki Corvette.Paul Collins is a guy who's been around the block. He was one of the progenitors of the early power-pop movement in the '70s in not one, but three influential bands of that era - The Nerves, The Breakaways and The Beat (the latter even appearing on Dick Clark's American Bandstand back in the day). He later turned towards a decidedly rootsier approach to his music, exploring country and folk rock, before returning to the more driving, high-energy sounds of his youth on his acclaimed 2010 Alive Naturalsound effort "The King Of Power Pop". His music has been covered by a host of talented musicians, most notably his song "Walking Out On Love," which Green Day's Billie Joe Armstrong performed as part of the punk band's hit Broadway musical American Idiot. $22 SKU:16125
