ALGO SALVAJE - Untamed 60's Beat and Garage Nuggets from Spain Vol. 1 -Label:MUNSTER Internationally labeled as "nuggets" (after the original compilation of the same name concocted by Jac Holzman and Lenny Kaye in 1972 for the Elektra label), the more common garage rock label has been used to place and describe one of the most fertile chapters of rock & roll history during its most creative years. An underground story which has luckily become known, with participants from all around the globe, which included anonymous musicians, independent record labels with impossible names, and ridiculously limited pressings, often not more than a few hundred copies. Much more important and influential than its level of exposure would suggest, this nuggets-type of music was insolent, proud and self-taught. The trigger of the phenomenon was, without a doubt, the concluding British Invasion to the U.S., which started in 1964: that collective youthful glare provoked by an unprecedented music event in which a number of English bands took up American music and regenerated it in their own personal way. All of them managed to open a big crack in the comfortable status of early '60s rock through which garage rock, in an incredible game of fascination and rage, started to pour freely. This new music, drawing from beat, rhythm & blues and the new psychedelic nuances that already flew over the rock scene, emerged gloriously as a coarse creature. Question Mark, The 13th Floor Elevators, The Remains, The Chocolate Watchband, Electric Prunes, The Seeds, The Standells, Kenny & The Casuals, The Sonics, Music Machine -- and hundreds more bands. They led the American answer to the British bands and they all reached truly fantastic heights, although any list of great names will be insufficient and unfair. Dazzled by that blinding light, thousands of bands appeared from all over the world, including Spain, of course. Few of the expected obstacles derived from the political and social situation in Spain under Franco seemed to matter to these bands. At their own pace and in their own way, and almost at the same time that it was happening on the other side of the Atlantic, the Spanish nuggets got into action and moved from the village music band to the yeh-yeh group. The cleverest teenagers noticed that there was something new in the air, and realized that such intoxicating music enabled them to display attitudes and words which didn't have any other way out in that anomalous society. The breeding ground was usually small labels and sometimes, not often, the bigger imprints would dare take a chance. In both cases, the nuggets-type tracks were always on the B-side of singles and EPs. It's worth it to note the unusual case of Los Brincos and their Beatlesque and thunderous debut "Dance the Pulga," a visionary piece which started the genre in 1964 with all the honors, and whose second 7", Flamenco, introduced one of the key contributions of Spanish garage: noisy approximations or versions of copla and flamenco songs. It was an obligatory and respectable settling of scores with genres of music that were tied to the past and to a model of authoritarian family whose foundations were starting to crack. And although the dotted map of the most prolific areas points towards the tourist sites of the Mediterranean coast, it was actually a global phenomenon which took place in any part of Spain. Coming, most of them, from a middle class background which was starting to consolidate, Spanish teenagers from the '60s employed the same musical models as their foreign colleagues, but their contribution was not only exemplary in many cases, but also specifically genuine. These Spanish Nuggets, an eternal unfinished business of our musical heritage waiting to be reissued, are finally celebrated here on this first volume of Algo Salvaje. Includes extensive notes by Vicente Fabuel, featuring all the original record sleeves and artist photos. COMP CD $21 SKU:16131

ALLERGIC TO FLOWERS- Garage Beat & Popsike - Part 2 1965-68 NEW LO PRICE! -Label:RPM (UK) "Part two of the first time thematic overview of West Coast independent label Challenge Records. The label hit paydirt in early 1966 when it scored a coast-to-coast hit with The Knickerbockers outstandingly energetic rave up 'Lies.' This riff on The Beatles sound could actually have been The Beatles. Its inclusion on Lenny Kaye's Nuggets set 'Lies' in stone as a all-time classic. Allergic To Flowers: Garage Beat & Popsike celebrates this and the other nuggets that Challenge issued from 1965 to 1968. There's The Brogues paint-peeling punk rocker 'Don t Shoot Me Down' -- the band featured future members of San Francisco legends Quicksilver Messenger Service. Also heard are more irresistible, rockin' and melodic high-energy gems by The Knickerbockers, the absolutely incredible psychedelic punk of Florida band We The People, the tough-as-nails Lindy Blaskey and the Lavells and the superb psychedelic harmonies of Fenwyck's 'Mindrocker.' And then there's the folk rocking and punkish sides recorded by Gene Vincent with Glenn Campbell, as well as The Jefferson Handkerchief's hippy novelty 'I'm Allergic To Flowers.' ASTRAL DAZE - VA ( 70 s Psychedelic South African Rock ) - Label:PHANTOM SOUND Although the South African rock movement of the late sixties and early seventies was not a major commercial success, it's participants heralded an exciting new age in South African rock and started a movement aimed at changing the musical tastes of fans in a spectacular way. Stadium concerts became the vehicle for feeding the youth with heavier rock sounds, and behind studio glass were producers like Clive Calder, Billy Forrest, Graham Beggs and Selwyn Miller who acted as change agents to transform conventional pop into heavier 4 to 5 minute songs. The movement's struggle for recognition through airplay remained unanswered and only the true fans of rock knew about their existence. BEAT FROM BADSVILLE- Vol. 1- Trash Classics from Lux & Ivy's Vinyl Mountain -Label:STAG-O-LEE (GERMANY) 24 jewels of U.S. trash culture, part one of the series. After the release of the vinyl version on 2x10" vinyl in July 2012, Stag-O-Lee now follows up with the CD version. "Brought up on the radio shows of the legendary rock 'n' roll DJs, the moondogging Alan Freed, Mad Daddy and, later, the ghostly Ghoulardi, it was hardly surprising that The Cramps' Lux Interior and Poison Ivy began trawling the thrift stores for juvenile delinquent tunes, lip-curling bad-boy rock 'n' roll, strange exotica, bizarre novelty 45s, dysfunctional doo-wop, psychedelic weirdness and instrumentals made by madmen. In America in the 1950s and 1960s, there seemed to be small town versions of such vinyl madness everywhere that, by the 1970s, were remaindered and to the majority of people unwanted. To the fledgling Cramps, this was nothing short of heaven. The duo filled their house with novelty memorabilia, schlock horror furniture and a record collection to die for. Lux eventually gravitated to his own Purple Knif Radio show and The Cramps delivered their versions of some of the stuff they'd found, from Ronnie Cook And The Gaylads' 'Goo Goo Muck,' to The Novas' 'The Crusher,' Lightnin' Slim's 'It's Mighty Crazy'and a whole host of others originally hand-tooled by The Phantom, Carl Perkins, The Groupies, Hasil Adkins and many more. The duo name-checked many a 45 along the way and seeking them out and sampling their eccentricities is nothing short of mind blowing. Indeed, in many cases, you have to wonder at what the artists involved were thinking before they went into the studio. Cackling laughs, offbeat plotlines and maniacal lyrics, detuned guitars, coded gibberish and B-movie horror all wrapped up in under three minutes, these are songs from a golden era of DIY music when the rule book of contemporary MOR music was lost down the back of the sofa. This 24-track collection positively effervesces with eccentricity. Side one offers half a dozen slabs of lip-curling rock 'n' roll, from the madcap beginnings of 'Bongo Beatin' Beatnik' through to the teenage rampage of Gene Maltais' unhinged 'Gang War.' Side two gives fashion tips, conveys strange love-talk, songs where words are meaningless and novelty driving stories, while side three brings guitars from Hades, honking saxophones and rhythmic dance routines. Finally, we have sounds to make you shriek on side four, with scorpions, witches and nightmares all on offer, plus probably one of the oddest 45s ever in 'The Cave.' Every track pirouettes dangerously and at times haphazardly around the expected. These are songs for strange times by what can definitely be considered strange people." --Dave Henderson, MOJO magazine, 2012 COMP CD $17 SKU:15671

BEYOND THE CALICO WALL - VA ( 60s psych ) Label:VOXX The good people who put together this compilation set out to accomplish no less daunting a task than collecting the most bizarre and extreme underground psychedelic music recorded in the 1960's, and, for the most part, the choices seem to be right on the money. The collection starts off with "The Trip" by Park Avenue Playground, a song that bursts out of the gate with an explosion of fuzz guitar, organ, and mad siren-like oscillating effects, coming at you from all directions, seemingly. Next up is "Suzie's gone" by Afterglow, definitely one of the weirdest singles ever. The singer moans "so...my...world...is...messed...up!" in the most detached voice possible over a staccato organ and drum part, leading to a guitar solo that soon collapses into no recognizable conventional song structure. No less amazing is "Mt. Olympus" by The Flower Power, which starts off as an innocuous and somewhat introspective sounding piece until a wild heavily chorused guitar break, which only slightly warns you of the totally anarchic feedback and free-form noise ending -- which goes on for over a minute in a 3:40 single! Then you get a bizarre sci-fi/horror tale in "The pulse" by Burritt Bradley, and an incredible reading of The Electric Prunes' "I had too much to dream last night" by Rasputin and the Mad Monks, with weird proto-techno sound effects, backwards vocals, and production effects making the backing track fade in and out, creating a disturbing sensory assault. Other highlights include "An experiment in terror" by The Greek Fountains, which is a strange polyrhythmic instrumental, and "Up in my mind" by The Spontaneous Generation, which surely has to rank as one of the most aggressive 60's psych records ever made, with waves of vibrato guitar and insistent wah wah riffing. Also worthwhile is "The electronic insides and metal complexion that make up Herr Dr. Krieg," by The Riders of the Mark, which musically isn't quite as strange as its title, but comes close! The weirdness factor decreases somewhat as the c.d. progresses, and a sloppy but straightforward cover of "In a gadda da vida" by Six Feet Under makes for a pretty uninteresting closer, but the good material here makes this an essential purchase. Buy it if you like psychedelia, experimental or Incredibly Strange Music. Robert Schell (Townsville, Texas)

FAR OUT - Nihonjin ( 70s spacey, guitar-drenched psych ) ltd to 1000 cardwallet SAALE - Label:PHOENIX Limited edition 1000 copies Lp replica card-wallet sleeve. Prior to metamorphosing into Far East Family Band, Far Out released this sole, spacey, guitar-drenched psychedelic prog album in 1971. Although the Floyd influences are highly apparent, the band produces an original 10/20/2009sound which defines its own unique identity rather than being a reflection of the British and American bands that were dominating the genre. Although there isw a keyboard-dominated opening, synthesisers are relegated to a supporting role, and thire sparse presence is restricted to occasional sound effects. The psychedelic ambiance comes largely from the guitars, electric sitars and intelligent percussion. The original album contained just two single-side tracks, and the intense guitar soloing, fantastic sound effects including gongs and howling wind drones combine to create and album of sparse beauty which effortlessly merges exotic Asian instrumentals with a psych sound occasionally reminiscent of Saucerful Of Secrets. FARREN, MICK- Deviants -Vampires Stole My Lunch Mo ney- Label:MISCHIEF MUSIC (England) Digitally remastered reissue of this solo album by the former leader of The Deviants, originally released in 1978. Joining him on this anarchic roller coaster are Chrissie Hynde, Sonja Kristina (Curved Air), Wilco Johnson and Larry Wallis. Opening the album with a Frank Zappa cover ('Trouble Coming Every Day'), shortened and sharpened, it becomes a statement of intent. And then onto 'Half Price Drinks' and 'I Want A Drink', there's a definite conceptual angle here. This is, without doubt, Farren's most enjoyable solo outing, a sassy swagger of an album. One of the key albums made on the periphery of the late-1970s punk explosion, Deviants frontman Mick Farren's return to raw rock, following most of a decade spent in journalism. This was less a timely resurrection than a vicious reminder that none of this new noise was actually very new. He'd been doing exactly the same stuff a decade before, and would still be doing it two decades hence. In the 1960s, after all, the Deviants depicted the underside of the peace and love rhetoric by asking just one simple question: what will happen if the revolution succeeds? And in the 1970s, Farren solo snagged the tabloid nihilism which now dominated the punk scene, and played it up for all it was worth. Vampires was released hot on the heels of one of the most glorious singles of the era, the seething teen riot anthem "Let's Loot the Supermarket Again Like We Did Last Summer"; indeed, combine that one track with the best bits of Vampires and there's probably no better illustration of Farren's (continued) ability to press the pulse of the period. FLAMIN GROOVIES - Supersneakers- ( power pop ) Label:SUNDAZED SUPER SNEAKERS is an essential document in the development of both power pop and the DIY underground. Self-released in 1968, when pretty much nobody was releasing albums on their own, the seven-track 10-inch LP SNEAKERS was enough of a success that Epic signed them for their 1969 full-length debut SUPERSNAZZ. Oddly, given the number of archival Groovies reissues, it took until 1996 for SNEAKERS to finally be reissued, in an expanded edition featuring 10 contemporaneous live recordings from original lead singer Roy Loney's private stash. SNEAKERS is very much a document of its time--there's a psychedelic vibe to songs like "Prelude in A Flat to the Afternoon of a Pud" that's missing from their later, poppier work--but all thelements that made the Groovies special are already here. The remastering, liner notes, and extras are all up to Sundazed's usual excellent standards.CD $14 SKU:473

LOVE,PEACE & POETRY- JAPANESE Psychedelic Music ( DELUXE FULL COLOR GATEFOLD SLV.) -Label:QDK GERMANY 2014 restock. LP version in deluxe full color gatefold sleeve. "Japanese psychedelic music of the 1960s & 1970s is very heavily invested in a hard rock aesthetic and much of what we've chosen to include here features some phenomenal over the top electric guitar excess. Many Japanese records from this period are either very heavy psychedelic rock, or they are very experimental and avant garde with little in the way of classic UK & US Sixties 'underground' psychedelia to be found. Unlike most compilations which focus on rare singles tracks, the Love, Peace & Poetry series collects tracks from the world's rarest and most obscure psychedelic albums believing that, no matter how passionate a music fan you might be, you shouldn't be too surprised to find that you may have missed at least a few things along the way.." -- Stan Denski. Artists included: The Mops, Yuya Uchida/Flowers, The Happenings Four, Foodbrain, Apryl Fool (Haruomi Hosono), Speed, Glue & Shinki, Blues Creation, Shinki Chen & Friends, The Jacks, Tokedashita Garasubako, Justin Heathcliff, Masahiko Sato & Sound Breakers, Kuni Kawachi & His Friends, The Beavers. LOVE,PEACE & POETRY- MEXICAN Psych Music ( DELUXE FULL COLOR GATEFOLD SLV.) - Label:QDK GERMANY 014 restock. LP version, full color gategold sleeve. "The economic prosperity that fueled the Baby Boom generation in the United States didn't exist for Mexican youth, nor was Mexico as racially volatile or sexually repressed. In the 1950's the culture of the United States was far more shook up by Elvis and his gyrating army than was Mexico. Rock and roll became dangerous in Mexico when it began to be mixed with a challenge to the political status quo. Tracks from rare LPs by The Flying Karpets, Grupo Ciruela, Los Ovnis, La Onda De Survival, and Nahuatl help complete our tour through the various climates of 1960s-1970s Mexican psychedelia, and readily demonstrate the origins of a musical culture that continues on into contemporary times in the many bands that make up the active Mexican music scene here in the new century." MARIJUANA UNKNOWNS - VA ( 60s Psych ) -Label:STONED RECORDS Marijuana Unknowns is a good idea—a comp full of tracks about pot. Marijuana Unknowns contains a variety of styles, and many of the tracks are late-sixties psych, but about half of them are really just songs that indulge stoner lyrics. The best track on this comp is "Mary Mary" by the Birdwatchers, which sings the praises of pot but with a haunting melody that hints at the perils of drug dependence ("Mary Mary, it's to you that I belong"). COMP LP $14 SKU:15536

MARY JANE - Original Soundtrack 180 gram ( quintessential '60s period piece) Label:REEL TIME 180 gram vinyl reissue. Released in January 1968, this cult exploito movie concerns the efforts of an art teacher to discover who has framed him for pot possession, with plenty of warnings about the dangers of drug abuse along the way. Its soundtrack is a quintessential '60s period piece, with fuzz guitar, bongos, flute, vibes, and more. COMP LP $16 SKU:13935

MASLON, JIMMIE LEE - Salacious Rockabilly Cat WAREHOUSE FIND Label:ROLLING ROCK Original pressing from the 70s. Jimmie Lee Maslon shows an energy and versatility rarely seen in a rockabilly artist. In addition, Maslon has the backing of renowned rockabilly session men like Ray Campi on upright bass and Rip Masters on piano. Maslon's growling "froggy" vocals and offbeat material almost make him seem like what some people would call a psychobilly artist, but I think Maslon was going for straight rockabilly, which actually makes his stuff seem even more unusual. Unbeilievably, Maslon was only fifteen years old when some of this was recorded! If you like rockabilly or old rock 'n' roll buy this before it goes out of print! COMP LP $5 SKU:15613

Many of the featured bands shared stages with the legends of the time, but failed to make it big, meaning that their 45s now change hands for vast sums. If you ever assumed that the late '60s Michigan scene was all about the Stooges, the MC5 and the Amboy Dukes, one listen to these snarling, fuzzy classics will blow your mind for good. Artists include: The Up, Sweet Cherry, Pitche Blende, The Glass Sun, Dick Rabbit, Popcorn Blizzard, The She-Devils, Renaissance Fair, The Orange Wedge and Dick Rabbit. COMP LP $21 SKU:14460
