Label News & Gossip

INSANELY good reviews for BEECHWOOD still rolling in… "Songs From the Land of Nod is a haunted record, but one of no mean achievement, oozing with edgy cut-throat energy and cool, sleazy grace. The kind of record rarely heard since the prime of The Ramones and The Cramps, it truly doesn’t put a foot wrong." – IT STARTS WITH A BIRTHSTONE

"More shambolic psychedelia than the straight-up, guitar cut-and-thrust of The Bowery… glammy and trashy, as much of the best Manhattan rock always was." – i94 BAR

"Looking back to move forward. NYC trio Beechwood might be accused of backward gazing when it comes to musical inspiration but what’s the problem when the results are so good?" – POWER OF POP

Plus nice reviews from ROCKANDRANK & ADOPTE UN DISQUE in France, and RUMORE MAGAZINE in Italy. Check their upcoming dates on the ALIVE site.

The BONNEVILLES premiered “Dirty Photographs” from their upcoming new album via MAGNET. "The group carries on their signature sound with a hint of lo-fi 1960s rock, reminiscent of groups like The Beatles and The Rolling Stones." – PASTE MAGAZINE. UK April/May tour dates to be announced soon.

LAST CHANCE
ONE EACH OF THESE, WHEN THEY’RE GONE, THEY’RE GONE!

ELASTIK BAND- ST (60s garage gem ) -Label:DIGITAL CELLARS REPRESSED!!!Best known for its 1967 cult single "Spazz", the Elastik Band recorded two full albums worth of material between 1967 and 1970 along with the notorious single. Salvaged from original master tapes, this Special Edition retrospective CD features liner notes, previously unreleased band photographs and rare memorabilia, and a true gem of a CD that ends with a late 60s recording of an Australian DJ who stopped playing the Spazz mid-stream, saying it was offensive, and refused to continue playing it! CD $12 SKU:9752

KALEIDOBOLT -THE ZENITH CRACKS (Psych power trio) -Label:PINK TANK RECORDS Finnish power trio Kaleidobolt returns with its second album. The music is full of progressive and heavy psychedelic leanings, and free of clichés. LP $22 SKU:18641

The bonus 7" features 2 previously unreleased tracks (also remastered from the original master tapes by Pete Kember). LP $50 SKU:19381

KROKODIL-The First Recordings 60s Krautrock legends 180 gram vinyl—also includes bonus region free DVD! -Label:KROKODIL First official reissue of the second Krokodil album, "Swamp". The infectious album, originally issued by Liberty in 1970, shows a band in flux between the scorching boogie-blues workouts of their eponymous debut and the massive stoned psych action of their third album masterpiece ("An Invisible World Revealed,"). Many German and Swiss groups attempted to sing in English to broaden their audience and virtually all failed to do so. Yet "Swamp" reveals itself to be one of the best examples of this phenomena, venturing into Van Morrison, Fairport Convention, and even Wailers territory at times, even as the rest of the band experimented with sitars, flutes and avant percussion. A great artistic development for the band without ever drifting into pop clichés. Recorded at Bavaria-Tonstudios, München. Comes on 180-gram vinyl, presented in a gatefold sleeve with an embossed crocodile leather front cover. The printed inner sleeve offers many previously unpublished photographs. LP $20 SKU:17007

LA DE DA'S, THE- Find Us A Way Ltd ed with 2 bonus tracks(great 60s New Zealand garage pop ) SAALE -Label:NOSMOKERECORDS (PORTUGAL) It's a more mod and beat psychedelic related release, tracks like 'Goodbye Sister' or 'Thank You For The Flowers' are a good example of that. LAZY SMOKE- Corridor Of Faces -DEMOS (60s psych masterpiece) SALE Label:JACKPOT RECORDS Demos of one of the most collectible & respected psych albums. Unreleased ’67 acetate of The Road Runners included!! In 2010, Jackpot reissued Lazy Smoke "Corridor of Faces", the sole output from a short lived Massachusetts psychedelic pop anomaly called Lazy Smoke that existed for a blink of an eye in 1968. Unearthed and recently recovered is this handful of spare demos. Crushingly honest and intimate, most of these songs would later see reworked for the debut album.n addition to the twelve 1967 demos, Corridor Of Faces Demos LP also includes two songs originally recorded to acetate in 1966 by pre-Lazy Smoke project: The Road Runners. These two slabs of proto-garage have never seen the light of day, and none of the songs included here have ever been released on vinyl. A must have for any fan of the proper album, but also a fantastic stand alone piece, creating an undeniable mood that can warm or chill you before any given song comes to a close. LP $15 SKU:11546

LIBERMAN,JEFF -Solitude Within (heavy psych guitar/west coast/acid rock) -Label:OUT-SIDER (Spain) Out-Sider present the first vinyl reissue of Jeffery Liberman's Solitude Within, originally released in 1975. Chicago born Jeff Liberman was a guitar player in the best tradition of '70s guitar Gods like Hendrix, Trower, Clapton or Zappa. His music is the perfect mix between virtuosity and feeling, with a gift for brilliant songwriting. Between 1975 and 1978, Liberman self-released three albums on his own Librah label which were some of the first private pressings to gain recognition amongst psych collectors in the '80s. Solitude Within, his second album, is a heavy psych guitar/west coast/acid rock classic with plenty of acid soloing drenched in fuzz-wah with treated vocals, effects, hard-blues and even some cool mellow folk grooves and experimental excursions. RIYL: Bob Smith, Terry Brooks, Robin Trower, Hendrix, D.R. Hooker, Bevis Frond. Remastered sound; Includes an insert with liner notes by Klemen Breznikar (It's Psychedelic Baby); Includes a digital download. LP $20 SKU:18343

LIND, BOB - The ELusive (1966 SEALED ORIGINAL) Label:VERVE Polarizing album released in May 1966 by Verve Folkways hot on the heels of the success of the World Pacific single, ‘Elusive Butterfly’ (polarizing because Verve added studio instrumentation to tracks taken from an acetate Lind had recorded as a seventeen year old for Denver based Bandbox label). Overdubbing recordings with pop/rock instrumentation to make them more commercial was a mini-vogue of sorts as the folk-rock boom peaked. The most famous example was Simon & Garfunkel's "The Sound of Silence," but there were more “exploitative” releases, (overdubs of some early Richie Havens tapes and, in this case of early Bob Lind efforts). And so, after ‘Elusive Butterfly’ became a smash, Verve got a previously unreleased tape that Lind had done prior to signing with World Pacific, and overdubbed electric instruments, drums, and orchestration. This mixture of Lind originals and folk covers (including ‘The Times They Are A-Changin'’) has some period charm, the oddball string arrangements mixing with basic tentative folk-rock rhythm sections... and Lind's singing and songwriting is not much different than what you hear on his early World Pacific recordings, though it's more innocuous and, at times, indebted to the early-'60s troubadour folk approach. All ethical dilemmas of adding instrumentation aside, it’s still musically a very interesting album. (sealed original LP $10 SKU:19365

LIQUID SOUND COMPANY-EXPLORING THE PSYCHEDELIC-LTD ed of 300 on SPLATTER VINYL-Label:NASONI Reissue of 300 copies on splatter vinyl. Originally released in 1996 by Rockadelic Records, this album can be regarded as a milestone of 1990s psychedelia. It offers a mindblowing mixture of psych, space rock, West Coast sounds, Middle Eastern scales, spaced lyrics and cosmic vibes. LP $29 SKU:18683

LITTLE MURDERS - Hi Fab (Aussie Power Pop)-Label:OFF THE HIP Beginning as a new wave punk band in 1979 who went on to become kings of the Melbourne Mod scene before dissolving in 1985 after playing possibly every gig and pub in Melbourne at the time. Their first album Stop was released posthumously on Au Go Go records.Ten years after that saw Little Murders return with 3 albums on Swerve Records, which garnered praise both here and overseas. The last of these was released in 2001 and that looked like that was it for the Murders.
However in 2009 Off The Hip re-released the Stop album together with a bunch of early studio recordings. The band started playing to promote the album and then it just jelled so well the band went on to release Dig For Plenty and Go on Off the Hip. The sounds and the songs just kept getting better each time.
Which leads us to the new album 'Hi-Fab' The title comes from the letters page of an old sixties pop magazine called Fabulous. A magazine that was an introduction to the world of pop for rob Griffiths way back then. And on this album rob has written 10 power pop gems. But they wouldnt be gems without the pedigree of musicians on the album. Rod Hayward ex Dave Graney and the Coral Snakes, Tony Robertson ex-Hitmen Danny McDonald ex-Oscarlima and solo artist and Mick Barclay ex Paul Kelly, Weddings Parties anything and more. Plus Anna Burley and Craig Pilkington from the Killjoys on backing vocal and brass and keys. Craig was also in charge of recording the album at Audrey Studios. LP $12 SKU:18459

This debut album, released just prior to their 30 day tour with the Music Machine, features great fuzz guitars and a healthy dose of psychedelic weirdness." LP $14 SKU:15818

LP $26 SKU:17734

MIGUEL Y EL COMITÉ (70s) Para Hacer Música (cover of a Shakers song)Label:LION El Syndikato made Miguel Livichich a rock star in South America; but it was his sole effort as “Miguel y el Comité” that made him a groove-loving crate-digger’s dream!. Percussion plays a key role in the band’s sound, although the guitar playing is most distinctive: sometimes melodic, at other times carving a path through the mix, with a hard and acid distorted fuzz guitar sound, as on the title track and the fabulous cover of El Kinto's ‘Qué me importa. LP $14 SKU:19262

NEW RIDERS OF THE PURPLE SAGE-Powerglide (country psych)-Label:LION In the days before genre obsession, a rock and roll fervour drew on a rediscovery of blue grass, folk, blues and ‘country music’. Add to the mix consciousness-expansion afforded by the proliferation of psychedelic drugs, and the music scene of the West Coast of America percolated, powered by this heady brew. At the heart of this experiment in new music and consciousness the New Riders of The Purple Sage were born. The history of the New Riders will forever be intertwined with that of their fellow travelers the Grateful Dead. Both bands shared a down-home vibe, and shared members for recording dates. Jerry Garcia of the Grateful Dead co-founded the New Riders with John Dawson and David Nelson as an opportunity to play pedal steel guitar—although he plays banjo and dobro on Powerglide, first released in 1972. Dawson and Nelson returned the favor, playing on Dead masterpieces "American Beauty" and "Workingman’s Dead". Phil Lesh and Mickey Hart of the Dead rounded out the New Riders rhythm section until David Torbert took over on bass and Spencer Dryden of Jefferson Airplane fame took over on drums. Grateful Dead drummer Bill Kreutzman plays percussion on this album. To add to all that star power, noted British pianist Nicky Hopkins (Beatles, Kinks, Stones) played keyboards on Powerglide. Dave Torbert's ‘California Day’ is a gem, a hymn to the West Coast with some beautiful slide and fuzz guitar work; ‘Contract,’ is an equally impressive blend of country rock and old west imagery. NRPS's cover of 'Willie and the Hand Jive' has a distinctly Grateful Dead jam vibe to it. This wasn’t music desperate for chart success, it was a soundtrack to an outlaw, countercultural lifestyle that aimed to escape the city and get away to the mountains. So, saddle up!) LP $18 SKU:18630

PALMER ,JOHN -Shorelines (Legendary 70s Canadian downer folk psych) -Label:VOID Legendary Canadian downer folk psych from early '70s. Songs 'Colours For The Shorelines,' 'Better Late Than Never,' more. Includes insert with notes about each song by John Palmer. Exquisitely brooding Bill Fay-esque introspection, featured in Patrick Lundborg's top ten reissues of 2009 ("one of the best things still floating around unheard by most"). LP $15 SKU:19258

PASSING FANCY- ST 60s Canadian sunshine pop-psych w new liners -Label:LION Rare yet much beloved Canadian pop-psych record from 1968—an album considered by many to be the best to come out of Canada during the late 1960’s! Built around the talents of singer/guitarist Jay Tefler and bassist Fergus Hambleton, A Passing Fancy made their name in Toronto's vibrant Yorkville Village scene. That initial successes playing Toronto's club circuit led to a headlining stint at the 1967 Toronto Expo. The resulting publicity saw them "discovered" by Columbia Records, who subsequently released a string of four outstanding pop/psych singles. Here's where it gets weird. In spite of the four hit singles, Columbia elected not to release an album. Indie label Boo Records was formed to release "A Passing Fancy" on LP (the singles plus four additional tracks). Although the LP received strong reviews, Boo Records couldn't sustain promotion; by the end of the year the band had called it quits. A shame, as it's a terrific album—tough edgy rock (slashing lead track and hit single, ‘I’m Losing Tonight’); pop/psych (singles tracks ‘A Passing Fancy,’ ‘You're Going Out Of Your Mind,’ and ‘She Phoned’); sunshine pop (‘I Believe in Sunshine’); a great acid rock meltdown (‘Your Trip’). Something for everybody! As usual, we went all out to try to produce a top-notch reissue. A few years of searching led us to A Passing Fancy lead singer, rhythm guitarist, primary song-writer, and later, screenwriter (1977's Kid Vengeance, starring Jim Brown, Lee Van Cleef and Leif Garrett is his), the late Jay Telfer. He supplied a band history and lyrics for all the songs to round out this reissue. LP $17 SKU:17395

REDONDOS - Full Circle With (glossy Inlay w/pic and liners. 300 copies only) Label:BREAK-A-WAY 10 track collection by pre United Travel Service Band; Painstakingly remastered at KSL; Incl. unreleased originals; Great LP sized full glossy Inlay w/pic and liners. 300 copies only
Limited, vinyl-only release for collectors and connoisseurs of vintage garage music and offers a valuable insight into the history of one of the most exciting Pacific Northwest psychedelic Bands - The United Travel Service. Founded in Portland, Oregon, three members of UTS took their first musical steps in the Redondos. Like their successors, the band left a large number of unreleased recordings dating from 1965. Influenced by early sixties Surf and inspired by the British Invasion, the Redondos created a unique sound belting out an amazing mix of storming Surf tunes, Rock ‘n’ Roll standards, and moody originals, written by lead guitarist Ben Hoff. The innocent charm of their Beau Brummels type edgy folkbeat already reflects the magic and authenticity of the later United Travel Service material and sets The Redondos apart from the typical mid-sixties regional Northwest Sound of the time. The Redondos never released any records, but after a serious run through their musical legacy, we have sorted out and remastered their best tracks to a great blend of enjoyable covers and stand-out originals sounding like a rockin' Bobby Fuller Four is meeting the moody beat of the Beau Brummels. For the group, these recordings reflect a special moment in time after a gap of nearly fifty years. LP $17 SKU:15156

REINHOLD MOLITOR- ST (Trippy Mexican psych ) SAALE - Label:VAM Official reissue of this ultra-rare album (Discos Zave LPL 163, 1969). Globe-trotting artist Bodo Molitor may have been born in Germany, but he’ll forever be associated with the psychedelic scene in Mexico and South America. In addition to creating the zoomorphic art for his own bizarre album, “Hits Internacionales,” he also created the psychedelic art for the Kaleidoscope album, for La Libre Expresion, and for his brother Reinhold’s solo album. He had this to say about the Reinhold record: “My Brother Reinhold came for a visit from Germany where he was playing with several bands. He was only 19. I knew Edghar Zamudio (from Peru) and one day he asked us to record that LP. Just acoustic—guitars and a banjo played brilliantly by my brother. I think we recorded the whole album in three or four days. I played some guitars and did some vocals as well. It’s folky and bluesy with originals some covers and traditionals. My brother sings and plays guitar and banjo, on some of the songs he wrote.” The Reinhold album is so rare, even with the connection to his more famous artist brother, no one seems to have discovered it… until now. Despite being from the end of the 1960's, Reinhold has more of an early-60's NYC Greenwich Village Cafe Wha?-ish folk underpinning. The best tracks have gravel-pated vocals in a vaguely Tom Waits/Joseph Spence sort of vein—really syrupy and quite excellent. Overall, a dark and morose vibe dominates; and we can all use some minor key laments, now and then, right? Limited editions (both formats) of only 500 copies, and available exclusively via Lion Productions and our friends. LP $12 SKU:15257

SEBASTIAN -Head Roach RAREST CANADIAN LP OF ALL TIME!-Label:VOID Collectors have whispered about owning an original in dark corners around the globe, only to have their hopes dashed when no originals turn up. Along came Void with a legitimate vinyl reissue of one of the rarest Canadian albums of all time bar none. When originally issued way back in 1970, the album came with a coloring book to color in the roaches. Soon the cover was banned for it's drug implications making the original hideously rare. THEE PROPHETS- Playgirl- SEALED ORIGINAL w drill hole-Label:KAPP This band from Wisconsin had a promising pop future, thanks to their minor Bubblegum/sunshine pop hit ‘Playgirl,’ but stopped recording after this 1969 album, and then ditched the bubble-gum sound for Jimi Hendrix and Cream covers in concert. So much for a career. This, from Bubblegum University: “The most common schizophrenic theme, paranoia, combines the self-centeredness of narcissism with the hopelessness of depression to make the sufferer feel as if the entire world is against them. Two songs, "It's Up to You, Petula," and the Rare Breed's "Beg, Borrow, and Steal," make the comparison of being kept on a string as a way to illustrate the mental control that someone has over them. The singer in "Dizzy" makes no such metaphor, but admits to the object of his affections, "Girl, you got control of me." "It's Up to You, Petula" illustrates a different type of paranoia, when the singer complains, "I know you've been seeing someone else." The singer in Thee Prophets' "Playgirl" makes the same complaint when he talks about a girl who's been "running 'round on [him]."this band from Wisconsin had a promising pop future, thanks to their minor Bubblegum/sunshine pop hit ‘Playgirl,’ but stopped recording after this 1969 album, and then ditched the bubble-gum sound for Jimi Hendrix and Cream covers in concert. THOR'S HAMMER - ST ( Icelandic garage legends! 65-67) Label:GARDEN OF DELIGHTS A deluxe edition, hand-numbered and limited to 1,000 copies, pressed on 180g vinyl.Danish band’s Metronome album (1971), the one and only record by one of those groups that promised much, but never went further than an eponymous debut; their music was close to Burnin' Red Ivanhoe, Blast Furnace and the jazzy style of bands like Traffic, with long tracks with killer wah-wah guitars, swirling organs, wild vocals and twisted psychedelic sax-breaks; ‘Mexico’ is perhaps the most effective track on the album (paraphrasing the well-known sax riff from Traffic's "Freedom Rider"), although the whole record is strong. Their one and only LP holds the sad record of being the most bootlegged LP in Denmark. This first legal LP reissue is accompanied by a 4-page insert in LP format, containing a detailed band history in German, English and Danish language, a comprehensive discography including side and solo projects, cover and label reproductions, and band photographs.
