NEW ARRIVALS

ALPAY- YETKE (70s TURKISH PSYCH Label:PHARAWAY SOUNDS IIn Turkey, psychedelia wasnt just some fleeting fad. Fuzzed-out guitar shredding genuinely intersected with some of the goals of traditional folk & classical music. As a result, even former twist singers & folk balladeers explored some fascinating & wild territory. Meet Alpay, the soccer player turned lawyer turned singer who started matching local lyrics to Western arrangements even before the mid-60s countrywide battle of the bands concerts. These early 70s singles lay down doleful Anatolian melodies, and they're simply soaking in heavy & wah-ed out guitar solos. If you're ready to go beyond Baris & Erkin, this is the perfect spot. Remastered Sound, insert / booklet with liner notes by Angela Sawyer (Weirdo Records CD $10 SKU:19200

BREAD LOVE AND DREAMS - ST ( 60s folk psych) Label:HUGO MONTES The first, and perhaps the dreamiest album from these famed folk/psych purveyors (Decca, 1969), who include David McNiven (he wrote all the lyrics for the amazing Human Beast "Volume One" album), and Carolyn Davis from Looking Glass; flowery yet mournful stuff—fragile and introverted songs in minor keys reminiscent of no one— and all of high quality. CD $8 SKU:19195

FISCHER, MORGAN -Seasons + Look At Life (MOTT THE HOOPLE KEYBOARD PLAYER) -Label:VOICEPRINT Morgan Fisher is probably best known as the keyboard player with British rock band Mott The Hoople in the seventies. Prior to that however Morgan had tasted success with British pop band Love Affair and just prior to Mott The Hoople had led his own band simply called Morgan and also briefly been a member of avant-garde rock band the Third Ear Band. Following the departure of Mott The Hoople's front man Ian Hunter the band opted to continue shortening the name to Mott and bringing in a new vocalist and guitarist. When this didn't work out despite recording two excellent albums the band brought in former Medicine Head vocalist John Fiddler and changed their name once again to the British Lions. When this band fell apart after two albums Morgan set out on a solo career and recorded a couple of albums under the name of the Hybrid Kids. Following a short stint playing keyboards for Queen on the road Morgan set off on his travels and amongst the countries he travelled to was India. On his return he lived in a commune and decided to record an album there working with another member of the commune producer John Leckie who had worked with Simple Minds, Public Image and XTC and would go on to work in the future with the Stone Roses. This album was called Seasons and featured John Fiddler on vocals on two of the tracks alongside Morgan. Although the album has its roots in new age the music is decidedly world music although at the time of recording the term was not in popular use. The material on the album is also a homage to Morgan's sixties roots and contains interesting arrangements of such classics like Time of the Season, and Kites. In 1984 Morgan Fisher decided to move to Japan having visited the country and taking an immense liking to it. It was shortly after arriving there that he recorded the album Look At Life subtitled "ten instrumental responses to a beautiful world". While in Japan Morgan also came across two Brazilian musicians who also worked on the album giving some of the songs a pronounced Latin feel. One of the songs Erik is also a personal homage to one of Morgan's musical heroes. Erik Satie The cover of the album also bears the name "Veetdharm" which is the name his spiritual teacher gave him. These two special albums are now collected together on one release and have been remastered specially for this re-issue CD $8 SKU:19192

HENDRYX, NONA - ST (70 soul pop) Label:T BIRD Nona Hendryx was one third of the pop/soul act LaBelle; after LaBelle called it quits in 1976. Hendryx released her self-titled debut record, which was an amazingly strong amalgam of soul and hard rock. Wearing skin tight pants, black leather and brandishing a Bowie knife on the LP cover she announced her intentions loud and clear but neither record company or radio at that time knew what to do with this African American woman with a huge voice comfortable and capable of singing hard rock as well as soul music. So, as usual, they turned their backs on the record and it disappeared almost as quickly as it was released. Which is a shame, because it's a nasty, relentless chunk of hard-edged rock'n'soul that was just a bit ahead of its time. Nona worked with Talking Heads as back-up singer and fell in with a hip crowd of musicians and her association with David Byrne led to her working with Bill Laswell who helped her put together her second solo album. CD $8 SKU:19197

JAMES GANG - RIDES AGAIN (70s rock)Label:BGO Second album (1970)by the Cleveland, OH area’s own James Gang, featuring the many talents of future music biz big shot Joe Walsh. This was the first album after Dale Peters replaced Tom Kriss on bass. More to the point here, "Rides Again" includes the popular single ‘Funk #49’ as well as the band’s AOR classic ‘The Bomber. CD $10 SKU:19202

OCHS, PHIL -The Broadside Tapes 1 (60s)-Label:SMITHSONIAN FOLKWAYS Phil Ochs's unique emotion, topical humor, songwriting chops, and sophisticated political perspective are evident throughout these 1962–64 recordings. One of the most compelling voices of the 1960s, Ochs performed these 16 original songs mostly at the offices of Broadside so the magazine could capture their music and lyrics for print. (They're reproduced in the booklet insert.) It's a wonderful mix of tunes, including the whimsical 'Spaceman' and 'Christine Keeler'; 'Hazard, Kentucky,' 'Spanish Civil War Song,' and 'I Another Country' (written after the killing of Medgar Evers); the Beatles' 'I Shoulda Known Better' (a 1964 duet with Eric Andersen at the Village Gate); and the poignant 'Remember Me,' 'The Passing of My Life,' and 'That's the Way It's Gonna Be.' Leon Wieseltier of Washingtonian deemed Ochs to be "the most brilliant and serious and moving and funny singer of the '60s, the movement’s most intelligent contribution to American popular music." Ochs took as a model union organizer and songwriter Joe Hill, who said that "a pamphlet, no matter how good, is never read more than once, but a song is learned by heart and is repeated over and over." Folkways' impeccable sound and documentation does this artist proud, setting Ochs' work off as the treasure it is. CD $8 SKU:19199

PANDORA -Space Amazon (1970s glam proto punk) -Label:ARF ARF Erik Lindgren's Arf! Arf! Records is known for gathering the most obscure unreleased vintage tapes for historical purposes. (They're also known to have a giggle now and again; a couple of the label's supposedly vintage unreleased tapes are at least suspected to be by modern-day groups recording in note perfect re-creations of period styles.) Though most of the label's vintage tapes are from '60s era New England bands, given Lindgren's proximity and tastes, the 1997 release Space Amazon is actually a bunch of circa 1974 recordings by Pandora, a Cleveland, OH, band. The tapes were produced by Joe Battaglia, drummer for Cleveland metallurgists Granicus, and only the first two, the thumping "Space Amazon" and "Daze of Madness," were ever released, and even then only on a flexi-disc given away by a local magazine. The glammy songs have a heavy, proto-punk edge, as if the group were heavily into the Stooges and the first New York Dolls album, and the theatrical vocals and self-consciously "decadent" lyrics suggest a strong Bowie/T. Rex fixation as well. Fun stuff, no matter when it was recorded. (MUSIC EMPORIUM)proto punk) CD $8 SKU:19193

RIPPLE - Sons of the Gods (70s R&B /Funk/Soul)-Label:BIG BREAK Ripple were an interracial R&B/Funk/Soul group that came together in Michigan, Illinois in the early 1970’s. With their radio friendly funky sound, which could evoke Kool & The Gang and Stevie Wonder, Ripple first charted in 1973 while signed to GRC Records with the groove classic 'I Don’t Know What It Is, But It Sure Is Funky' which peaked at #11 R&B and #67 Pop and was featured on their eponymous debut album released in the same year. After hitting the upper reaches of the R&B singles chart throughout the middle of the 1970’s Ripple moved from GRC Records to the increasingly influential Salsoul Record label to record and release their second album, 'Sons of the Gods,' 1977. With Salsoul Records behind them Ripple were able to create a set of very strong dance grooves that more than stand up to the releases of many of their contemporaries of the time. The aptly titled ‘The Beat Goes On And On,’ a solid funky groove that continued the groups success on the Billboard R&B singles, was released as a single. Slick Afro/Latin percussion and smooth interplay between the horns, keyboards and guitar parts while lead singer Keith Samuels holds the R&B/Funk/Soul/Jazz/Disco melting pot together with his assured soulful vocals. Expertly re-mastered and complete with extensive liner notes and a bonus track. CD $10 SKU:19198

SHUSHA -Shusha + This is The Day (70s obscure Persian )Label:BGO With so much attention given to Iran’s female singers (Pari Zanganeh), it seemed natural to offer this disc, which contains two albums released in the UK in 1974. Shusha grew up in Iran, the daughter of a distinguished Shia theologian and Professor of Philosophy at University of Tehran. She was sent to Paris when she was only seventeen to study Oriental languages and philosophy; she also trained as an opera singer. In Paris she encountered artists, writers and poets such as Louis Aragon and Jean Paul Sartre. She was encouraged by Jacques Prévert to record albums of Persian folk songs, and subsequently chansons and old French songs. After marrying the writer and explorer Nicholas Guppy in 1961, she moved to London, where she became as fluent in English as she already was in Persian and French. Her first British LP release, in 1971, was an album of traditional Persian music, previously released in France. By this time, influenced by the Folk Revival, she began writing and singing some of her own songs, as well as covering the works of contemporary songwriters (including Captain Beefheart!). It's no wonder then that these two records contain an intriguing mixture, ranging from traditional Persian songs to jazz rock. Stellar backing musicians on the albums, too: John 'Rabbit' Bundrick, John Kirkpatrick, and BJ Cole, and engineered by 'John The Wood'. With influences ranging from medieval folk to Jacques Brel and Joan Baez, the albums have a lot to offer—good folky tracks with, at times, a Middle Eastern flavour. Other tracks, mostly on the second album, have a more west coast feeling. A bit of a gem, then CD $8 SKU:19196

TNT -Mod Psych Power Pop From Central PA-Label:ARF ARF Back in the early '70's TNT were covering The Choir, Left Banke, Creation, Moving Sidewalks and Chocolate Watch Band along with writing their own mod infected songs. On this CD there are 23 unreleased gems taken directly from original mastertapes, proving that Big Star, Raspberries and The Droogs weren't all alone in their original quest for glory. Super 28-page archival booklet. Features a very young Erik Lingren, many years before joining Mission of Burma’s Roger Miller and Martin Swope in Birdsongs of the Mesozoic. CD $8 SKU:19194

BEAUTIFUL DREAMS -Ember Sixties Pop: Volume 5, Ember Girls (66-69) Label:FANTASTIC VOYAGE The concluding chapter of the Ember Sixties Pop series, which covers the years 1966 to 1969, and compiles the releases of three fine female singers. The publicity conscious Ember boss Jeffrey Kruger saw an opportunity to promote supermodel Twiggy as a singer, and signed her to the label in 1966. Her two singles were written and produced by Tommy Scott, who had overseen Twinkle’s hits ‘Terry’ and ‘Golden Lights.’ At the time, the singles became huge hits in Japan, which resulted in Twiggy appearing at the Budokan Hall in Tokyo, not singing her songs but parading the latest fashions while a local group played Beatles covers as accompaniment! Linda Thorson was a television favorite as the glamorous sidekick on The Avengers TV series. Ember revealed the singing side of her talents via a deal in 1968 with singer-songwriter/producer Kenny Lynch. Lynch came up with four very commercial songs for the recording sessions: ‘Here I Am’ ‘Better Than Losing You,’ ‘A Bad Time To Stop Loving Me,’ and ‘I’ll Just Pick Up My Heart.’ Linda’s next Ember session occurred in May 1970 in Beverly Hills, so, for completeness sake, they have extended the timeline to present those three songs in this compilation. Julie Rogers, a powerful singer with stunning looks, shot to fame in 1964 when her second Philips single, ‘The Wedding’ was a transatlantic hit both in the UK and USA. Her next contract was signed with Ember in 1969. Two sets of sessions that year produced the fourteen tracks that made up her album “Once More With Feeling,” presented here in its entirety. All recordings are mastered from tapes and the booklet is illustrated with sleeve and label shots. The original Ember records are highly collectable: so you can’t beat these great beat and rock collections from the Ember vaults. Nice shrink-wrapped slip-case packaging COMP CD $8 SKU:19204

JOY/SELECT STORY - VA (60s treasures from teen pop top novelty!) Label:PRESIDENT A superb collection of artists on the Joy/Select Records label. Joy tried his hands at all sorts of musical styles - from teen pop to novelty, from soul to more. The CD features a fold-out booklet with in-depth sleeve notes and memorabilia. "Hal and Miriam Weiss launched the independent Joy Records in New York City in 1958, and before it ran its course in 1965, they had released 80 singles with the Joy logo and 35 with the Select subsidiary logo (which may have started out as “Selbon” Records) covering every genre from Polka to Folk and comedy/novelty, including those identified now as Soul, R&B, Pop, Doo-Wop and the Girl-Group Sound. Along the way, while always doing decently on a regional/local basis, they also chalked up some nationally-charting sides. Here from President Records you get these 26 sides with quite decent sound reproduction and a fold-out liner notes insert COMP CD $8 SKU:19203

TWO TIMING BABY -Ember Sixties Pop: Volume 2, 1961-1962Label:FANTASTIC EMBER In 1960, Jeffrey Kruger launched Ember Records as an independent, one of very few in the UK, where the majors held sway. Straight away, the label set about trying to break into the charts with many fine pop releases. The Ember Sixties Pop series compiles the best of those records. “Two Timing Baby” picks up the story from where Say When: Ember Sixties Pop Volume 1 (FVCD044) left off. Carter, Lewis & The Southerners first Ember single ‘Two Timing Baby’/’Will It Happen To Me’ features Joe Meek engineering, Geoff Goddard on piano, Albert Lee on guitar, Chas Hodges on bass and Bobby Graham on drums. The Meek connection continues with Mark Douglas only single: Joe produced ‘It Matters Not’/’Upside Down’ and Tornado Clem Cattini confirms he drums on both tracks. American songwriters Buddy Kaye and Phil Springer penned many hits, including ‘The Next Time’ for Cliff Richard. They brought several songs to Ember and Grant Tracy was the adaptable vocalist on ‘The Great Matchmaker’/’The Tears Came Rolling Down’ and the follow-up flip ‘Taming Tigers.’ Other beneficiaries of the prolific Kaye and Springer were Johnny Carson (‘Are You Anyone s Girl’/’Teenage Bachelor’ and, again, ‘The Tears Came Rolling Down’) and Sandra Gale (‘Hello Heartache’/’If She s Right For You’) who had been girl singer with the Ray Ellington Quartet, joining Ember when Ellington did. Kruger chose the songs for Lita Roza’s single with the aim of moving her sound towards pop and rock n roll, and she turns in fine performances on ‘Mama (He Treats Your Daughter Mean)’/’(He s My) Dreamboat,’ aided by a driving band led by Tony Crombie. Brooklyn-born Kerry Adams recorded her single in New York, conducted by future soul giant Jerry Ragovoy. The Dale Sisters cute harmonies are evident on their second Ember single, ‘Road To Love’/’Secrets.’ Tommy Sanderson’s second Ember 45 combined trad-jazz ‘Ding Dong Rag’ with groovy ‘Piano A Go Go,’ which would have made a great theme for a TV detective show. Many of these original singles are highly collectable (mint copies of Mark Douglas are valued at £75, Carter, Lewis & The Southerners at £50 and Lita Roza at £30). Subsequent volumes will carry the story through to the end of the sixties, with further sought after tracks included. The series is complemented by compilations devoted to beat and rock from the Ember vaults. Recordings are mastered from tape, where available, and booklets illustrated with sleeve and label shots. Nice shrink-wrapped slip-case packaging. COMP CD $8 SKU:19205

MYRCHENTS -INDEFINITE INHIBITION (rare U.S. 60s garage ) SALE - Label:MUSICOL BW / ALL AROUND YOU Possibly from Columbus Ohio but unknown to us beyond that. This is their first 45 from 1967 and is the pearl amongst the swine. All downstroked guitar and snotty vocals, this verges on the inept, but stays on the right side of moronic. Uptempo with jagged guitars, a rudimentary beat is the order of the day, and like all great platters like this, is best served raw. 45 RPM $14 SKU:14411

MYSTIC BREW -DON'T YOU WANT TO STAY (RUSSIAN 60s garage style)Label:SOUNDFLAT MYSTIC BREW is a five piece band from Samara, Russia influenced by '60s garage and psychedelic obscurities. These young garage purveyors were infected with '60s sounds in their teenage years already and ever since they have been enjoying the sounds of bands like THE SEEDS, THE THIRTEENTH FLOOR ELEVATORS, THE MUSIC MACHINE, THE VELVET UNDERGROUND and also the '80s garage revival with huge passion. 45 RPM $8 SKU:17955

SWAMPGAS -ST(1972) Label:Skyf Zol First discovered while opening for the Grateful Dead, Long Island quartet Swampgas were taken under the wing of producer Artie Kornfeld (Wind In The Willows, Woodstock co-conspirator) and set about recording an LP. Due to financial difficulties the album was held up a year, and finally given a cursory release in 1972 (Buddah BDS 5102), by which time the disillusioned band has already broken up. Listening to their sole artifact now, one immediately notices the loose, rural southern-esque vibe considering their northern roots, and the inventive guitarwork of main songwriter Baird Hersey, who continues to make music today as leader of the overtone singing ensemble Prana. CD $10 SKU:19042

ZOOT MONEY-Transition (LOST 70S PSYCH GEM)-Label:RIGHTEOUS An excellent album! Featuring the same players who were in the Big Roll Band (including future Police guitarist Andy Summers) on all tracks, Zoot Money came up with this tip-top set, which has soulful ballads, up-tempo mod material and a couple of dreamy sitar numbers written by Summers; 'Soma' inspired Summers and Money to push the boundaries and encouraged the band to wig out further, and in a state of psyche-pop bliss, they decided they were so far out of the Big Roll Band sound that they should change their name to Dantalian's Chariot. They played shows with the Pink Floyd and featured a couple of the tracks from “Transition” in stranger incarnations; Dantalion’s became a cult classic in the process, but turned their existing mod following off and failed to ignite. After the Dantalion hiatus, “Transition” was finally released (in 1968) on the Direction label; by that time, the mods had embraced the psychedelic bug and the album slipped into obscurity, and became one of those buried treasures that is talked of but seldom actually even seen. Finally, this lost gem has made it to CD. Remastered from the original quarter inch tapes, with all of its glorious sweeping sounds, aching vocals and groovy upbeat tunes intact, it's the epitome of cool. CD $8 SKU:19014

MORNING DEW - ST DOUBLE LP (60s rare psych) -Label:LION Morning Dew have been psych collector faves for ages. Their sole release, "At Last" (much like the Morgen album on Probe) becomes more obviously crucial with each passing year. After recording their legendary album for Roulette in 1969, Morning Dew headed back to Topeka feeling good about their prospects. But Roulette had problems. They did finally release "At Last" late in 1970... and marketed it so well it became a psychedelic rarity and a cult favorite. Even so, Morning Dew's producer at Roulette urged the band to record a demo of songs for a second album. They went to a local studio in August 1970 and blasted out eight songs, bolstered by new recruit Ferdy Baumgart's Hammond B3. Band leader Mal Robinson also made acoustic two-track recordings in his basement: new songs, plus others from the Morning Dew repertoire—just vocal and guitar. The band gigged while Roulette and it's honcho Morris Levy withered under scrutiny by law enforcement. A second album came to nothing. Still under contract with Roulette and still dealing with broken promises, burnt out and broke, Morning Dew disbanded in June, 1971. But those demos... they need to be heard. That's where we come in. Two records, chock full of your new favorite Morning Dew songs, plus solo acoustic versions of band classics like the monumental 'Crusader's Smile,' alternates, and more, most of which is previously unreleased.
One more thing: all of this material is making its vinyl debut.•Taken from original tapes•Small press run of 500x copies, housed in a deluxe gatefold tip-on jacket•Luscious four panel color insert includes liner notes by Morning Dew songwriter Mal Robinson + lyrics LP $29 SKU:18280

NIGHTSTICK-BLOTTER - COLOR VINYL(HEAVY STONER PSYCH 1995) Label:ARMAGEDDON A Heavy psychedelic bummer rock masterpiece from 1995. Six loud and pummelling transmissions from the streets of Weymouth directly to your skull. A sonic boot to the head. SIEGE drummer Robert Williams powers this sonic trip through some extremely heavy territory. Pink Floyd meets Flipper under a collapsing bridge, Lydia Lunch meets the Brainbombs and they take acid together, Black Sabbath meets Funkadelic while Kilslug throws empty beer bottles at them both. We file this in the "fucked up music" category alongside Flipper, Brainbombs, Kilslug, Drunks With Guns. If SIEGE's Grim Reaper was ever to be completely extended to band status, this is it. You will either be on board for this trip, or you will not be. We are definitely on the boat. Some words on Blotter: "I was at Armageddon Shop in Providence again the other day and once again they were playing something that caught my ear. This time it was NIGHTSTICK. Slow, super fuzzed out, distorted stoner rock with LOTS of feedback! The first track on the CD is basically a 10 minute distorted bass solo, but the rest of the band kicks in after about 5 minutes of fuzz for the chorus part. Super Noizy. Super Awesome." vinylnoize dot comLP $16 SKU:18668

ELECTRIC ASYLUM - Vol 5 (Rock Hard British Freakrock ) SAALE Label:PAST AND PRESENT UK hard rock, glam rock, early progressive rock, and a few tunes that defy convenient generic classification. Even the lesser tracks are enjoyably curious in the manner of the best British rock of the mid-1970s, and this is compelling in a way the more psych-oriented volumes in this series were not (if only because this stuff hasn't been anthologized with the same alacrity as freakbeat). The Electric Asylum Vol. 5 is weird and wild fun -- lace up your paisley boots and check it out COMP CD $12 SKU:11729

MOTHS- ST ( UK underground hippie acid-folk 1970)LAST ONE -Label:GUERSSEN RECORDS (SPAIN) UK underground hippie acid-folk from 1970, originally released as a micro-pressing of less than 30 copies on the collectable Deroy custom label. Mellow atmosphere with acoustic guitars, flute, bongos, bass and refreshing, sincere vocals. A few self-penned tracks plus some amazing & haunting covers of people like Incredible String Band, David Ackles, Dylan, Tim Buckley, Bert Jansch. Rated with the maximum rarity on Hans Pokora’s “3001 Record Collecting Dreams”. Remastered sound, insert with liner notes and photos. New cover design (the original album came in a plain white sleeve). “…Enchanting atmosphere and fragrant mellow vibes. Soft vocals, vivid earthy use of bongoes, and haunting flutes possess the LP in its entirety. The vocals throughout are subdued, laid-back beyond mellow...folk lost in a sleepy haze, for the beach on a warm summer's night...comforting diffused light hazily pulls the listener into dreamscapes where flutes softly cut swathes through mists with doleful but captivating sounds, crystalline clarity of sound...One of the rarest, obscurest UK releases” – Stephen Smith (Progressive Music) LP $22 SKU:16280

MOTIONS - Wasted Words,The Havoc 45S(60s Dutch)- Label:PSEUDONYM RECORDS (NETHERLANDS) When The Motions crashed into the Dutch charts at the beginning of 1965 with Its Gone, they opened the floodgates for a tidal wave of young Dutch bands. Few of them, though, could match the pure excitement etched into the grooves of The Motions 1965-66 singles, featuring the definitive lineup of singer Rudy Bennett, songwriter/guitarist Robbie van Leeuwen, bass player Henk Smitskamp and drummer Sieb Warner. That magnificent procession of songs is laid out for all to hear in dynamically remastered sound on Wasted Words: The HAVOC 45s. The raw, frenetic thrash of Its Gone and We Fell In Love, vibrant, mournful laments like Ive Got Misery, For Another Man and Ill Follow The Sun, the stark socially-conscious folk-rock of Wasted Words, the explosive freakbeat of Everything Thats Mine and the sophisticated pop balladry of My Love Is Growing - all written by master songsmith (and future Shocking Blue mastermind) Robbie van Leeuwen. The latter song so impressed co-producer Scott Walker that he recorded it with the Walker Brothers. Pressed on 180 gram vinyl, Wasted Words features a top quality 350 gram carton gatefold sleeve featuring rare photos and all of the original picture sleeve artwork. LP $24 SKU:14504

MR. ALBERT SHOW - Strange Story DBL LP 180 gram -Label:PSEUDONYM The Eindhoven-based Mr. Albert Show may be considered one of the ultimate Dutch jam bands of the late sixties, combining elements from rhythm & blues, rock, soul and psychedelia. The five-piece, led by saxophone player Bertus Borgers (later a member of highly rated bands s.a. Sweet d'Buster, Golden Earring, Groove Express) was truly a sensation for anyone who witnessed one of their gigs in the period 1969-1973. The band recorded two albums, both of which now fetch high prices amongst international record collectors. This double-LP, pressed on 180-gram audiophile vinyl, features excellent sounding highlights (remastered from the original tapes!) from their farewell live-show, that took place in their hometown in 1973. NEW RIDERS OF THE PURPLE SAGE- The Adventures of Panama Red STONER ROCK)-Label:REAL GONE MUSIC If there was ever any doubt that the New Riders of the Purple Sage were the ultimate hippie country rock band -- and having had Jerry Garcia, Phil Lesh and Mickey Hart of the Grateful Dead as early members meant that there wasn't much -- The Adventures of Panama Red put them to rest. This 1973 album's loosely connected tall tales of drug culture, complete with the album's underground comic book graphics, ensured that this gatefold record was a long-time dorm room favorite for separating out those stems and seeds. But Panama Red (their only gold record) had a lot more going for it than just countercultural kicks -- the band, by now consisting of John Dawson, David Nelson, Dave Torbert, pedal steel ace Buddy Cage and Jefferson Airplane drummer Spencer Dryden -- was much tighter than any outfit this stoned had a right to be, and with songwriting contributions from Peter Rowan (the hit 'Panama Red' and 'Lonesome L.A. Cowboy') and Robert Hunter ('Kick in the Head') as well as from the band's own fine tunesmiths in Dawson and Torbert, the songs were of a uniformly high quality. Production by multi-instrumentalist Norbert Putnam, charts by the Memphis Horns and vocal contributions by Buffy Sainte-Marie and Donna Godchaux helped enshrine this record as one of the finest country-rock outings of the '70s. Now, Real Gone Music is reissuing this classic album for the first time on vinyl, remastered by Vic Anesini at Battery Studios in NYC and lacquer cut by Kevin Gray, with a limited edition pressing of 1000 in -- what else? -- purple vinyl, with the original gatefold album and inner sleeve graphics (with lyrics) intact. Time to add to your stash of essential '70s vinyl!" LP $24 SKU:16793

OS TARTAROS-The First Portuguese Surf Garage Band -Label:GROOVIE In the early 1960s, when rock n roll started dying in Portugal, a new trend was already here. Hailing from the UK and headed by Cliff Richard, fast upstaged by his supporting band The Shadows, this would be the first British Invasion. An entire generation quickly fell under its influence and all across the country dozens of bands were formed, playing rock-based guitar-driven instrumental songs with catchy tunes that were often adaptations of traditional songs. Like the Killer surf garage tune 'Tartária', maybe one the wildest surf tune record in Europe in that era. Oblivious to what was happening abroad, the Portuguese press dubbed them Shadows-influenced instrumental bands. This was the context in which Os Tártaros were formed in an Oporto garage. Featuring Joaquim Gualter on lead guitar, Alberto Abreu on rhythm guitar and keyboards, Hernâni de Melo on bass and harmonica, and Eduardo Alves on drums, the band began touring the country, performing in associations, fairs, and festivals. The early 60s explosion of Shadows-influenced bands grew substantially stronger when The Beatles came onboard and also benefited from the charitable actions of one man, Gouveia Machado, the owner of a musical instrument store who let young people pay for their guitars and drums by installments. From 1964 onwards, with the advent of new influences and instruments, hundreds of bands followed, not just in Lisbon and Oporto but all across Portugal. Some of the tracks were included in the fabulous compilations, PORTUGUESE NUGGETS, this LP is more than a anthology of all their material, its a historical document from a band that ran against their fate in a time when playing in a rock band, under the Portuguese dictatorship, was like a crime. LP $14 SKU:15532
