New Arrivals

KILLED BY DEATH- Vol 1 (legendary U.S. punk series ) - Label:REDRUM The disc that launched a thousand knock-offs! The first volume of Killed by Death appeared around 1988, the brainchild of (according to legend) a New York-based Swedish record collector who gathered up 25 of his all-time favorite new wave-ish rarities and unleashed them on what was then very much a fledgling punk collectors' market.Concentrating almost wholly on '80s Americana, but with the odd early import to shake things up, the end result was an eclectic but nevertheless exciting package, its contents ranging from the Slugs, featuring former New York Doll Rick Rivets, to northwest D.I.Y. originators the Wipers, but climaxing with one of the most in-demand records of the age, the then-ascendant Beastie Boys' super-rare Pollywog Stew EP. That the Beasties of such early renown had little in common with the slick rappers of later years is, of course, crucial to the material's success; had they sounded anything like you expected them to, they'd never have fit on this collection so well. KILLED BY DEATH- Vol 2 ( (legendary U.S. punk series ) - Label:REDRUM Rare Raw Punk Rock ‘77-’82. Carved firmly from the sa me rock of resolute punkiness as its predecessor, Killed by Death: Raw Rare Punk Rock, Vol. 2 continues surveying the cream of the lost punk scene of the mainly '80s, by illustrating at least a handful of the stylistic extremes that fell beneath that banner. COMP CD $12 SKU:2588

LIVERPOOL TODAY-- VA LIVE AT THE CAVERN SALE! ( 60s Merseybeat )Label: FANTASTIC VOYAG 1965! Released in November 1965 on the independent Ember label, Liverpool Today documents a rare slice of Merseybeat, made doubly collectable by its association with the legendary Liverpool venue, the Cavern. In a move that was not uncommon in the sixties, the recordings were actually made in a studio, albeit the neighbouring Cavern Sounds and were then overdubbed with audience reaction plus announcements by compere Bob Wooler. A truncated version of the album was released in the United States on Capitol. This reissue has been mastered from original tapes and marks the album s debut on CD. Sleeve notes are by Spencer Leigh, presenter of BBC Radio Merseyside's On The Beat. His books include volumes devoted to Merseybeat and the Cavern. Tracks by artists s.a. Michael Allen, Earl Prston's Realms and The Richmond Group COMP CD $15 SKU:10521

MARIJUANA UNKNOWNS - VA ( 60s Psych ) -Label:STONED RECORDS An album with a theme, “Marijuana Unknowns” features obscure bands from the sixties toting tunes referencing the heady herb. Subject aside, which is not nearly as shocking or rebellious as it was when these tracks were conceived, this is a really great collection of songs as it examines an array of musical moods and measures. Expected to be a series, no additional installments ever appeared, which leads me to believe there were simply no funds to keep the project going. Perhaps the record label’s money all went up in smoke - pun purposely intended!

Marked of mouth-watering bubblegum ingredients, it’s no surprise Ron Dante, whose merry pipes inhabit sugar-coated ear candy by the likes of the Archies and the Cufflinks, is the vibrant vocalist behind the Two Dollar Question’s hook-happy “Aunt Matilda‘s Double Yummy Blow Your Mind Out Brownies,” and then there’s The World’s hilarious “Pot Party,” which should actually be called “LSD Party,” as it consists of a gaggle of people laughing themselves silly while a bluesy surf rock band noodles away in the background. COMP CD $10 SKU:7549

MUTANT DISCO- VOL. 2 digipack SAALE - Label:ZE Highly rated compilation, reissued by the revitalized Ze Label. Also contains a 16 page full color booklet with pictures, credits and liner notes COMP CD $10 SKU:13174

13th Floor ELEVATORS -Rockius Of Levitatum PIC. DISC-Label:LILITH (Russian Federation) 2014 release. This collection of live tracks gives those of us who weren't there during those halcyon days of psychedelia, a taste of just what lofty heights (and hellish depths) the Elevators were capable of reaching. The performances are taken from three sources: "Roller Coaster", "You're Gonna Miss Me" and "Tried to Hide" from a rockin' appearance on a local Dallas / Ft. Worth television show in the spring of 1966, "Don't Fall Down", "Kingdom Of Heaven", "She Lives In A Time of Her Own" and "I've Got Levitation" from a notoriously shambolic gig in Houston in 1967, and the remaining eight tracks from a series of stellar performances at San Francisco's Avalon Ballroom in autumn of 1966. LP $22 SKU:17117

AFFINITY - ST ( 70s Brit psych prog w two bonus tracks pasted hardboard sleeve ) Label:AKARMA Originally released on Vertigo in 1970, this is the only album produced by one of the most appreciated English psych-prog bands. They became legendary thanks to the vocal skills of their singer Linda Hoyle. The sound reveals traces of blues, rock and jazz, with a result that at times reminds of Julie Driscoll & Trinity. Including two bonus tracks (originally released on a 7" single in the same year) this is a reissue of a real masterpiece! Comes in a pasted hardboard sleeve. LP $22 SKU:15644

AGNES STRANGE- Strange Flavour (1975 obscure hard rock gem)Label:RADIATION DELUXE SERIES (SPAIN) 180-gram LP. Limited edition of 500. Originally released in 1975 on the BirdsNest label, the sole album by boogie stompers Agnes Strange is an obscure hard rock gem begging to be rediscovered. Formed in Southampton, UK, in the mid-'70s by Alan Green (bass), Dave Rodwell (drums), and John Westwood (guitar, vocals), Agnes Strange failed to reach any glory or fame, but their legacy of heavy rock riffs, raw leads, and tough attitude -- with a spacey Hawkwind-esque touch here and there -- helped them reach cult status among '70s rock fanatics LP $26 SKU:17195

ALARM CLOCKS- LIVE! NOV. 7, 2009 ( 60s Ohio garage punk ) SAALE - Label:NORTON Great LIVE performance by reformed Ohio 60's Garage-Punk band who has not missed a bit from the raw energy delivery of their teenage years! LP $12 SKU:13339

ALEXANDER, WILLIE - Solo Loco (Test Pressing) WAREHOUSE FIND -Label:Bomp Records 1981. Willie "Loco" Alexander (born 13 January 1943 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) is an American singer and keyboard player based in Gloucester, Massachusetts. He played with The Lost, The Bagatelle and The Grass Menagerie before becoming a member of The Velvet Underground in late 1971, joining fellow Grass Menagerie alumni Doug Yule and Walter Powers and replacing Sterling Morrison, who had gone off to pursue an academic career. With the Velvet Underground, Alexander toured England, Scotland and The Netherlands in support of then-current album Loaded. After completing the tour on November 21, 1971 in Groningen, the band planned to start recording a new album, but band manager Steve Sesnick sent all of the band but Yule home, presumably to retain maximum control of the product (the resulting album was Squeeze, released in 1973) and effectively ending Alexander's time with the band. After leaving The Velvet Underground, he enjoyed a chequered career, both solo and with his Boom Boom Band, that lasts to this day. In-between, Alexander teamed up with Powers to tour France in 1982 for French punk record label New Rose Records, in 1987 opening for Dramarama and in 2006 for a tour with the legendary Boom Boom band. In addition to his storied music career, in 1994, Willie narrated a local film entitled Middle Street made by fellow Gloucester native, independent filmmaker, Henry Ferrini. Willie has also contributed many songs to the soundtracks for Henry's other films. LP $10 SKU:10176

ALLAN DAVIE AND THE ARROWS - Arrow Dynamic Sounds ( 60s Surf/Fuzz ) -Label:TOTAL ENERGY Starting in the '60s as a surf group, Davie Allan & the Arrows took instrumental
music a step further, hot-wiring their sound with the abuse of fuzz pedal. "Talking about pop culture, baby? Allan was an architect, a natural fact rock & roll artist. Allan's ax rocks, stalks and talks with heat, assurance and (believe it or not) a maturity that transforms the oft-shallow rock-instro into epic-scale slabs of rock & roll expression. Dazzling." - L.A. Weekly LP $5 SKU:4480

ANTORCHAS, LAS - ST (ultra-rare 60s Mexican psych w. liner notes, and a poster insert that replicates the Orfeon EP art) - Label:VAM MEXICO Las Antorchas were formed in 1965 by five college students in Mexico City. They released only one EP on Orfeon, but had recorded enough material for an album. They split around 1968/69, but after a line-up change they continued under the name of Antorcha. Thanks to the persistence of VAM Records and record producer Manuel Alvarez Valdez, we now have all known material of Las Antorchas, including their Orfeon material. Their early sounds are rock/beat influenced, with most relying on organ and vocals. But the excellent ‘Dime’ is a really great acid-punk track. Truly underground Mexican rock, waiting to be discovered. This edition has liner notes, and a poster insert that replicates the Orfeon EP art LP $19 SKU:15111

BACHS- Out of the Bachs - remastered 180 gram virgin vinyl (60s garage psych)- Label:OUTSIDER Restocked; '60s garage-psych moody monster! Includes insert with detailed liner notes and rare photos.Out of The Bachs was originaally released in 1968 as a private pressing of 150 copies; it's one of the rarest USA '60s garage/teenbeat albums ever. The band consisted of five young kids from Chicago, regulars at local teen dances, who decided to release an album for their fans before splitting up. Recorded and mixed in just ten hours at a makeshift studio, Out of The Bachs offers 12 amazing self-penned songs with a sound ahead of its time. Pure teenage-angst vocals, crashing Rickenbackers, fuzz outbursts, killer moody tracks... Sadly, all previous reissues of the album failed to capture the true sound of the original, until the Time-Lag label reissued it in 2011 with remastered sound from a pristine original vinyl copy. This reissue uses the same audio master as the out-of-print Time-Lag edition. File next to The Rising Storm, The Fantastic Dee-Jays, The Savages. Includes insert with detailed liner notes and rare photos. LP $26 SKU:13382

ZOOM -Sweet Desperation ( 76 pre punk Bowie/ Velvets/ Sparks inspired )-Label:UGLY POP (CANADA) "Bored of cover bands and Toronto's stagnant bar scene, Chris Haight and John Hamilton formed Zoom in 1976, inspired by such pre-punk touchstones as the Velvet Underground, Roxy Music, Bowie and Sparks. The band quickly set to gigging locally, but were soon caught up in the punk scene that exploded to life around them. An obscure but seminal 1977 45 -- arguably Toronto's first punk record-- was their sole release before the band dissolved as Haight joined the Viletones and Hamilton began drumming for the Diodes. Despite their duties in two of Canada's leading punk bands, however, the pair didn't want great songs like 'Schoolgirl Hitch Hiker', 'My Baby's Got No Brains' and 'They Only Come Out At Night' to go undocumented, so they entered the studio in 1978 to get this stuff on tape. Produced by Bob Segarini and BB Gabor, and with musical contributions from members of The Ugly, The B-Girls and The Curse, the session captured a pretty special time in Toronto music history. It seems especially poignant that it would then remain unheard for decades. In 2014, Hamilton, who had gone on to an illustrious career of his own but had never entirely forgotten Zoom, located the tapes and had them professionally baked and restored. A trove of photographs, flyers and graphics was similarly uncovered, and now Ugly Pop is very pleased to announce a 13-track LP." LP $24 SKU:17598
