WEEKEND UPDATE: NEW SHINDIG & MORE

This weekend we got the new SHINDIG for you kiddies, and I found you guys a bunch more of those WAREHOUSE FINDS you love so very much! Big batch of tasty restocks too.

Some sad news for those of you who haven’t heard, our long time friend Billy Miller of the amazing Norton Records has passed away, we’ll miss him. Greg and I were friends with Billy for decades, he was the sweetest guy you could imagine. The label will continue with his wife Miriam at the helm. Give the label some love, here or elsewhere to give them a hand in what must be a very hard time.

Next up on Alive is MARK PORKCHOP HOLDER, if you like Left Lane Cruiser this is gonna rock your world. Check it out on the ALIVE site: Mark Porkchop Holder

FUZZTONES Illegitimate Spawn - VA Vol 2 -Label:TWIST Part two of the Fuzztones Tribute Trilogy, FUZZTONES ILLEGITIMATE SPAWN 2!!!! This double CD features 49 bands from all over the world, paying homage to the Gurus of Garage Grunge, The Fuzztones! Also included is an MTV interview from 1990 (VJ Martha Quinn interviews Rudi). So many exciting bands on this one, it's hard to know where to begin. It's prob- ably safe to say that the live track by Ian Astbury, backed by the Fuzztones - performing "Cheyenne Rider" in 1989, will be the track to get the most attention, due to the inclusion of the Cult's mainman. This collection also features 80's Garage heroes the Headless Horsemen (featuring former Fuzztone Elan Portnoy) and Italy's Sick Rose, as well as popular New Millenium Garage rockers Doll Squad from Australia, Berlin's Magnificent Brotherhood, Copenhagen's Defectors, the Urges from Ireland, Seattle's Boss Martians, and many more, coming from Japan all the way to Uraguay! And for history buffs, a studi track by Rudi's 1972 band, Springhead Motorshark, doing the original version of "Yeah Babe"! Also included, Harrisburg, Pennsylvania's first (maybe only!) punk band, The Punk Rock Janitors, contributing the original 1980 version of "Just Once," produced by Rudi himself. Last but not least, a brand new original, penned by Italy's Preachers with the help of Rudi Protrudi, who contributes lead vocals to the track = It's called "Turn Me Out,' and it's killer!COMP CD $16 SKU:11521

WEAD -BY THE WHEY / AND I & SHE-Label:SLOVENLY You’d figure that with the recent release of two new volumes of Crypt Records’ Back From The Grave series, and a vast stack of Last of the Garage Punk Unknowns comps finally getting their due, that the well of unheard '60s garage band recordings finally got sucked clean dry. Enter Tom Shannon of the mighty CHEATER SLICKS who dialed us up last year with a story of a customer he met while on the clock at Columbus, Ohio’s famed Used Kids Records, where he holds down hours and takes all the good stuff. Said customer delivered a perfectly preserved time capsule 7” acetate from his Cleveland juvenile delinquent combo THE WEAD: drummer Mike O’Callaghan allowed Mr. Shannon home recording privileges on proper gear where the resulting files were handed over to Black Gladiator / Slovenly Recordings for release. Much to garage kingpin Tim Warren’s chagrin, we sent him the tracks to apply his Crypt-style audio tweaking and manhandling, and we now present the first ever issue of this lost 1966 teenpunk masterpiece. “By The Whey” is a rabid punker wrought with menacing mod riffage, a twisted break and lead vox that shows the singer sounding like puberty was still miles away. The flip “And I And She” is of equal unhinged quality - a storming raver that would have easily fit on the “Teen Jangler Blowout!” volume of Teenage Shutdown, and it's as unique as we’ve ever heard 45 RPM $8 SKU:17873

ARE WE NOT NEW WAVE? - Modern Pop at the Turn of the 1980’s - Label:THEO CATEFORIS “Are We Not New Wave? is destined to become the definitive study of new wave music.—Mark Spicer, coeditor of Sounding Out Pop
New wave emerged at the turn of the 1980s as a pop music movement cast in the image of punk rock’s sneering demeanor, yet rendered more accessible and sophisticated. Artists such as the Cars, Devo, the Talking Heads, and the Human League leapt into the Top 40 with a novel sound that broke with the staid rock clichés of the 1970s and pointed the way to a more modern pop style.
In Are We Not New Wave? Theo Cateforis provides the first musical and cultural history of the new wave movement, charting its rise out of mid-1970s punk to its ubiquitous early 1980s MTV presence and downfall in the mid-1980s. The book also explores the meanings behind the music’s distinctive traits—its characteristic whiteness and nervousness; its playful irony, electronic melodies, and crossover experimentations. Cateforis traces new wave’s modern sensibilities back to the space-age consumer culture of the late 1950s/early 1960s. BOOKS & MAGS $10 SKU:13177
