UGLY THINGS- #42- SUMMER 2016: YARDBIRDS / WEIRDOS -Label: Two fantastic bands take pride of place of place on the cover this issue. The Yardbirds, one of the most innovative groups of the ‘60s, are re-examined via a fascinating interview with Paul Samwell-Smith, the band’s bass player, musical arranger, and one of their key songwriters. The Weirdos were at the epicenter of the Los Angeles punk scene in the late 1970s, but their story has never been covered before with any depth or detail. We rectify that this issue with an epic feature story loaded with wild and weird photos. Also in the spotlight are London ‘60s mods The Carnaby and The Game, Syracuse budget rock heroes The Penetrators, Texas garage-punks The Wig, Berkeley power pop icon J.D. Buhl, late ‘60s Manchester long-hairs Greasy Bear, and frilly-shirted pop-psych purveyors Fortes Mentum. Also, the story of Custom Fidelity Records, a riveting journey behind the scenes of the vanity record pressing industry in its mid-century heyday. Not to forget the latest installment in Cyril Jordan’s ongoing Flamin’ Groovies saga, and our extensive review sections, the ultimate consumers’ guide to all the latest vinyl and CD reissues and rock‘n’roll-related books. (1)BAINS, LEE - There is a Bomb in Gilead” Immortal Lee County Killers), defined a certain kind of southern garage punk in the early ’00s, incorporating not just blues, but gospel, redneck rock (Skynyrd, Molly Hatchet, Allmans) and soul into an incendiary onslaught. Griggs’ keenness for unbridled six-string freneticism, decisive fleet-fingered pyrotechnics, primal garage-punk spunk” CELEBSTONER LP $12 SKU:16565

(4)SULFUR CITY- Talking Loud -STARBURST Label:ALIVE Former truck driver Paradis towers throughout, evoking Joplin, Slick and even Patti Smith on full-tilt blasters such as Whispers and Raise The Hammer; early 70s-style conscious blues-rock on War Going On; and shining on moody, swirling psych ballad One Day In June.

The band’s raging but luminescent dynamic, vividly captured by producer Dale Morningstar, gains extra depth through Keith Breit’s keyboards. In the words of an old jazz correspondent, this band “slices so much ass the room is waist-deep in ass”. We say a new star has come among us. – Kris Needs / CLASSIC ROCK $10 SKU:17613

(5) RADIO MOSCOW - LIVE IN CALIFORNIA DOUBLE GATEFOLD LP -Label:ALIVE If live albums are often dismissed as the preserve of bands fresh out of ideas and with nothing else to release to hoover more money from their witless and obliging fans, it’s time to re-assess that call. In fact, Radio Moscow’s barn-busting, sprawling opus screams out for a re-think. – The BARMAN / LP $20 SKU:17676

BEST ARIZONA GARAGE BANDS 1967- 1970- VA W 20 page booklet -Label:HDM RECORDS In addition to music that captures a moment in time, the release features a 20 page booklet filled with the story of each of the groups included here along with period photography, show flyers and more. The Arizona music scene during the sixties can easily be likened to its desert surroundings: The monotony of average and sometimes even good bands writing less than good and even average songs. Then one day you hear a band that knocks you out. Those are the kinds of bands that I had the opportunity to discover and produce that suddenly emerged out of garages and other little holes in walls ? wherever they could find a place to converge and create their music. I now have the honor and the privilege to present to you the bands that I think are Arizona's best garage bands from 1967 to 1970.' -- Hadley Murrell. "At an age when most of us were just listening to music, Hadley Murrell got involved. At 14 he started playing drums with The Carnations, and went on to work in radio, as well promoting shows and other live events. Much of what he made went towards studio time to produce the music heard in this collection. Often garage rock is under produced to its detriment. That's not the case here, Murrell recorded at Phoenix's Audio Records, other clients included Dwayne Eddy, Dyke & The Blazers and Waylon Jennings (among many others). And unlike many garage rock sides ? Hadley took his performers into the studio prepared and ready to lay down tracks as hot as the Arizona desert. In addition to music that captures a moment in time, the release features a 20 page booklet filled with the story of each of the groups included here along with period photography, show flyers and more." CEASE AND DESIST-DIY! Cult Classics from the Post-Punk Era Label:OPTIMO MUSIC (UK) IY! Cult Classics from the Post-Punk Era (1978-1982) collects 15 UK 7" singles recorded between 1978 and 1982, compiled by JD Twitch to showcase the DIY spirit of those times. "If Punk was the nuclear detonation, the fallout that came after was where a lot of the most interesting music of that era was made. People who would never have thought to release a record before realised it was something they could do, and the end result was a DIY explosion. I've always loved music that doesn't try to fit in a particular genre, that is anti-canonical and doesn't care what else is going on in music at that time, that takes risks and is full of imagination and ideas that may or may not make any logical sense but that resulted in something unique, that ignores conventions about how a record SHOULD be produced and that was created simply because its creators felt the urge to express themselves and share the results with some other people. This compilation compiles 15 tracks that fulfil all those criteria. None of them had any success, most are (unjustly) obscure but every one of them has inspired me and would be in my ultimate 7" singles box" --JD Twitch. This release has been a real labor of love, involving tracing long-lost artists to far-flung corners of the globe, persuading them that the modern world needs to hear the music they made several decades ago, tracking down masters -- lovingly restoring 7"s in place of lost masters in some cases -- and conceiving an elaborate package with detailed sleeve notes to house the double album. Unfortunately, the original choice of title for this release infringed on the copyright of a series of well-known pop compilations released by a certain major label. They sent a cease and desist letter (hence the title of this edition), and did not accept proposed modifications to the original sleeves, so this edition is released in a more conventional package than was intended. Gatefold sleeve with printed inner sleeves containing sleeve notes and detailed overviews of each individual track by JD Twitch and an introduction by New York's DIY expert Dan Selzer. Includes tracks by Tesco Bombers, Sara Goes Pop, People in Motion, Nancy Sesay & the Melodaires, The Distributors, Dorothy, Thomas Leer, Visitors, The Murphy Federation, The Cro-Tones, Fatal Microbes, Spunky Onions, The Fakes, and The Prats. CHARRED REMAINS- VA 80s U.S. PUNK DOUBLE LP Remastered w liner notes -Label:RADIO RAHEEM RECORDS Legendary 82 Northwest AMERICAN hardcore. Rare and unreleased tracks. Re,mastered from original 1/4 inch reelsl.

In the annals of early 80's American hardcore, no compilation holds more seminal weight than Charred Remains. Initially released in 1982 on cassette through Bob Moore's Version Sound label and available in limited supply, the release served the world the first earfuls of such groundbreaking and legendary bands such as HÃ sker DÃ , Die Kreuzen, Void, Violent Apathy, Toxic Reasons, Articles of Faith, Rebel Truth, Personality Crisis, and Sin 34. Besides the actual sounds contained on the tape, Charred Remains was a testament to that primary quake of DIY ethics that empowered many a short-haired youngster to start bands, record labels, and fanzines and forge the underground to where it is today. To find an original copy of this compilation and not have to give up a kidney in exchange would be quite a feat, but now Radio Raheem waves their magic wand and Charred Remains is something for everyone to enjoy in the vinyl format. Re-mastered from the original master tapes with liner notes from Bob Moore and Die Kreuzen vocalist Dan Kubinski, Charred Remains is rescued from the collector ghetto and plopped right down into your lap to behold. LEFT LANE CRUISER - Junkyard Speed Ball LTD ed PINK viny - Label:ALIVE Left Lane Cruiser’s third album for Alive Naturalsound records could be considered, in many ways, their best effort yet. “Junkyard Speed Ball” brings in the elements of the heavy, heart thumping, trash blues stomp they’re known for, but it also showcases a wider range, with some slower numbers that will make you groove. Recorded in Detroit by Jim Diamond, Left Lane Cruiser is joined by none other than Revrend James Leg (aka John Wesley Myers) of the Black Diamond Heavies playing keyboard on five songs, with his distinctive style undoubtedly bringing a new color to the duo sound.

Formed by Freddy J. Evans IV (guitar/vocals) and Brenn “Sausage Paw” Beck (drummer/percussion/vocals), and hailing from Fort Wayne IN, Left Lane Cruiser has been bringing its unique style of high octane punk blues (aka deep blues) to fans all over the world, slowly gaining recognition from the press :
“Assimilates the Mississippi Delta blues laid down by guys like Big Joe Williams and Son House and cultivates it into a country punk ‘n’ blues speedball” (Popmatters). “Most say it’s a blues band, but they are also a hard rock band with a lot of Southern fried attitude. They are their own category. Call them Industrial Redneck, or Country Trash.” (Atlanta Music Guide). “Reminds me of live Cramps, RL Burnside, and even old Henry Rollins. If CBGBs was still open that would be the venue I could see Left Lane Cruiser playing” (Blogcritics). “Traffic in North Mississippi Hill Country-influenced, rough-edged, and, yes, kickass blues rock” (Blender). “ The band blends styles that wouldn’t normally be compatible, but when the two musicians come together the result is hard, rusty blues that will get you moving” (Kentucky Kernel). LP $16 SKU:14204

He released the critically acclaimed “Green Blimp” in 2010 and “Soundtrack” followed in October 2011. In the summer 2013 his song “Lookin’ For the Magic” was prominently featured in the horror film “You’re Next.”

“Dwight Twilley is back with Always, a 10- track collection of sharp rock and pop. Following the passing of his longtime musical partner Bill Pitcock IV, Twilley enlisted a broad cast of guests for the record, ‘pals and friends’ like Steve Allen and Ron Flynt of 20/20, Susan Cowsill, Mitch Easter, Tommy Keene, Roger Linn, Leland Sklar, and Ken Stringfellow.” - AQUARIUM DRUNKARD LP $16 SKU:16538

Tracks like “Cry, Cry, Cry” with its teenage-angst vocals and out of control fuzztone guitar break, “The Story Of My Life” with that bizarre and ultra-punk bass line or the moody-punker “It’s gonna rain” have been included on countless garage comps (Back From The Grave, Acid Dreams, Nuggets, etc) and have been covered by numerous bands who worship them as 60s punk Gods. Sadly, the band never got the chance to record a full album. After three outstanding 45s, they recorded a projected fourth single that never saw the light of day, just when the band had changed its name to U.S and had started playing in a heavier vein, similar to early MC5. Soon after, the band split up and some of their members formed psych-rock band Lost Nation. On this collection, along with their official 45s and alternate takes / rehearsals, you’ll find the unreleased 45 from 1969 plus some demos recorded by an unnamed post-Unrelated Segments / Lost Nation band in 1972. An amazing find which shows the band playing pure Detroit high-energy hard rock! “The Unrelated Segments emerged from the same downriver suburbs that had produced the MC5, and their suburban mutation was almost as unique. Singer Ron Stults had an unforgettable style somewhere between punk snarl and Brit erudition and the songs he wrote with lead guitarist Rory Mack were catchy and substantial” – Ben Edmonds (Creeem, Rolling Stone, Mojo LP $32 SKU:16282

UTHER PENDRAGON-San Francisco Earthquake 3LP -previously unreleased West Coast guitar psychedelia, 1966-1975. BOX SET -Label:GUERSSEN RECORDS (Spain) Three-LP box version in purple-and-gold hot-foil-stamped box with eight-page insert and poster. A treasure trove of previously unreleased West Coast guitar psychedelia, 1966-1975. "Uther Pendragon was more than just a band, it was a family. Closer than brothers, they lived together, made music together, worked, played, laughed, cried and dreamed together." --Mike Stax (Ugly Things)
This is the incredible story of Uther Pendragon, a lost psychedelic band from San Francisco whose music has remained buried until now. Formed in the Bay Area in 1966 as a teen garage group called Blue Fever, Uther Pendragon lasted from 1966 until 1978. During that time, the band went through different names and phases, as their music evolved from garage to psychedelia to hard rock, but the core of the band always remained the same: Mark Lightcap (rhythm guitar, vocals), Bruce Marelich(lead guitar, vocals), and Martin Espinosa (bass, vocals). After finding their ultimate drummer in Mike Beers, the group finally settled on the Uther Pendragon name in the early '70s. But despite being active for all that time and recording at numerous studios (including their own in Palo Alto), Uther Pendragon never released any recordings. Their complex and fascinating story, which involves winning a Bay Area Battle of the Bands and playing with Country Joe & The Fish, recording a killer garage-psych 7" acetate in 1967, going to the legendary Pacific Recording Studios in 1969 to record a demo, living as a family in the same house for many years and rehearsing seven days a week, building their own recording studio and music corporation, being managed by Craig Pedersen (Something Wild, Tripsichord Music Box), being involved in an occult-themed rock opera called Sabbat, and much more, is told with all the details by Mike Stax from Ugly Things in this set's extensive liner notes, with rare photos. Produced from the band's vast archive of original master tapes, San Francisco Earthquake includes their unknown-until-now 7" acetate from 1967 (fab garage-psych in the vein of The Human Expression or The Music Machine); tracks from 1966-'69 including a groundbreaking, moody psycher from 1966; a demo tape from 1969 recorded at Pacific Recording -- an incredible document for any lover of early SF garage-psych (think Oxford Circle, The Savage Resurrection, Moby Grape . . .) -- and many tracks recorded at their home studio in Palo Alto. 100% unadulterated West Coast guitar psych and hard rock that recalls QMS and even Kurihara-era White Heaven.

VAUGN, BEN -Texas Road Trip-Label:MAPLEWOOD Ben Vaughn has had the type of rock n roll career that hasn’t just been successful, but fascinating as well. He has always done things his own way carving a niche and career that is unlike any other. Growing up in Collingswood, New Jersey, out of high school, Ben worked in a knitting mill, as a delivery-truck driver and even a landscaper before he decided that life wasn’t going to be suitable for him. From there, he has gone on to record numerous acclaimed records both with The Ben Vaughn Combo, his band, and as a solo artist as well.Presented now as a Maplewood Records reissue is Ben Vaughn’s excellent 2014 release Texas Road Trip. It is both a tribute to Texas rock n roller legend Doug Sahm of Sir Douglas Quintet fame, (Bob Dylan is a big fan) while also being completely original material written by Ben. Think of it as if Ben Vaughn wrote a bunch of numbers and got some of Sahm’s former band members to record them with him making it sound like it could be a Doug Sahm record. This is exactly what happened when Ben traveled to Austin, Texas to record the tracks with Augie Meyers (Keys, Squeezebox), Alvin Crow (Fiddler, Strings), Speedy Sparks (Bass), John X. Reed (Guitar), and Mike Buck (Drums), respectively.Tracks like Heavy Machinery, Sleepless Nights, and Seven Days Without Love are signature Ben Vaughn numbers but done with a Texas rock n roll ambience. With Ben Vaughn, you can count on having a tight record with tracks that will make you move your feet and lyrics that will make you think.
Maplewood Records is proud to release this instant classic in United States and around the world. Texas Road Trip is a must have for any Ben Vaughn fan and a welcome to any music lovers collection. Enjoy! LP $16 SKU:17628

WAILERS- The FAbulous At the Castle IMPORT - Label:MR SUIT RECORDS The Wailers had coalesced from a crude instrumental combo with hits like "Tall Cool One" into a storming rock'n'soul outfit by the early 1960s, and the Spanish Castle in the DMZ between Seattle and Tacoma was their home turf. Modeling themselves somewhat on the scale of a small-change soul revue, they sported instrumental workouts from the band built around Mike Burk's propulsive and exciting drumming ("Shivers," "Sac O'Woe") and Rich Dangel's bluesy guitar playing ("San-Ho-Zay"), along with the triple threat of vocal turns from piano/organ pounder Kent Morrill (a nice reprise of "Dirty Robber" from the Golden Crest album) and featured band vocalists Rockin' Robin Roberts ("Rosalie," "Since You've Been Gone") and Little Gail Harris ("All I Could Do Was Cry," "I Idolize You"). These are the Fabulous Wailers you hear on this disc: a groundbreaking band in their prime on their home turf. An added bonus to this ultra-important live album -- and make no mistake about it, every Northwest band from the Kingsmen to the Raiders to the Sonics on down were influenced by this band and this record -- are the inclusion of two bonus tracks, both sides of the original Etiquette/Wailers/Rockin' Robin Roberts single of "Louie Louie" and "Mary Ann." Undoubtedly one of the most influential albums in Seattle rock & roll history.

Two of those 7-inches were released using the moniker The American Zoo. WHITE LIGHT - Parable (scarce high-powered bluesy garage/psych ‘74)-Label:SOMMER Super scarce high-powered bluesy garage/psych hard-rock beast, packed to the gills with cheesy organ, jubilant fuzz guitar, and frenzied drumming”. – Ken Scott (The Archivist First ever reissue of this ultra-obscure private pressing (as featured in the last Hans Pokora’s “7001 Record Collector Dreams” book with the maximum scale rarity). Done under license from the band members. Insert with liner notes and photos.Formed in Glasgow in the early 70s, White Light were not an ordinary Xian rock band: influenced by the explosive sound of The Who, the hard blues of John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers and even Black Sabbath, their live performances across the country featured heavy rock sounds, feedback howling round, phased lighting effects and commitment to the real enjoyment of Rock Music. They weren’t formed to play in churches – but to take The Message to the rock generation in loud clubs, halls and big rock venues. In 1972, they were finalists in a national rock competition organized by Melody Maker magazine. This event encouraged the band to enter the studio for the recording of their first album. “Parable” was released as a private pressing in 1974. Housed in a mysterious looking cover, the music is Xian hard psych straight from the garage with lot of raw fuzz guitar and Vox Continental organ.Combining hard-rock with heavy blues and dreamy moments, it features the monster sidelong track “Prodigal”, which has to be heard to be believed.
