Weekend Update

This weekend we have some big shipments rolling in, one from the Australian label OFF THE HIP, you can get your dose of psych, garage, and punk and at a great price too! Also just in, a batch of high end reissues by obscure 70s bands, be sure to check that out too.

And of course lots of our label titles making the news, James Leg and Datura4 continue to gather raves from the critics, don’t miss the first pressings on HAND MIXED STARBURST VINYL.

JAMES LEG -BLOOD ON THE KEYS: “If you’re a fan of gunnite gypsy punk with a rocksteady back beat, James Leg is your eternal ediface. There is nothing like a Leg record and there never will be, no one plays like him, no one growls like him, and certainly no one rocks like him. He’s a world travelled stalwart and will be forever a gem in the Blues crown. – NO DEPRESSION

DATURA4-“Elements of hard-lined blues remain evident, but are primarily smoothed out by a dominant, free-formed ’70s psych sparsity. Those sprawling soundscapes themselves threaten explosive outbreaks yet are reigned in further with a defining boogie, a heavy footstomp of swagger that sets a more contemporary course.” – Johnny Nail / ROLLING STONE AU

LEFT LANE CRUISER BECK IN BLACK “As a taster for the band ‘Beck In Black’ is a great place to start and the older songs have certainly motivated me to check out their earlier albums. However it’s a strong album in its own right with plenty of classic Left Lane Cruiser to enjoy, with a few songs offering a more mellow side to the band.” – MAXIMUM VOLUME

Thanks for supporting our label!

NEW ARRIVALS

BLOOD GROOP- Revolution Blues (LIME SPIDERS frontman- garage pop ) - Label:OFF THE HIP Mick Blood is best known as the iconic frontman/ singer/songwriter for the LIME SPIDERS. According to Juice magazine in Nov ’04, “Mick Blood has a knack verging on genius for penning three minute garage gems”Mick Blood has finally decided that two guitars just isn’t enough and the explosion of sound on this recording is courtesy of Julian Poulsen (Moler, Stiff Kittens, Green Mist), Andrew Kentler (Glide, Gamma Rays) and Ollie Laurie (Exotics, Hoss). Completing this superb line up is the awesome rythmn section of Pete Leeming on bass & the hired gun of Michael “Kaos” Glenn on drums. CD $12 SKU:9609

BURNT SUITE -ST- (72 hippie psychedelic stoner rock Label:VOID A wonderful vinyl reissue of the one and only album by Burnt Suite, a rural hippie psychedelic stoner rock release from 1972. This LP has been a big collector's item for many years. This legitimate reissue, with involvement of members Bill Florian and Woody Andrews, finally sees the light of day in a limited edition of 500 copies on black vinyl and including an insert." Released on the BJM label, in 1972, the only release by East Hartford, CT's Burnt Suite is a mix of country rock and harder rock with mild psych influences. The lack of personnel, coupled with the spartan production, yields a weirdly stripped down sound, and a vibe that they may not have exactly been going for, but is very desirable and modern and underground in its feel. At times a Creme Soda-esque 60's throwback sound emerges from the mix, or some bars of frantic rhythm guitar, and then it's back to the minimal style. A record with many admirers." LP $21 SKU:17885

CYKLE -ST (US garage / psych 69)Label:OUT SIDER - Insert with detailed liner notes *LP housed in an old- school- style tip- on sleeve. Top notch US garage / psychedelic album from 1969: Vox organ, fuzzy guitars, snotty vocals and impressive songwriting / recording quality. Featuring all-time acid-punk classics such as “It’s Her” and “Walkout Of My Mind”. Cykle was formed in 1968, North Carolina, when gifted musician and songwriter Jimmy Sossamon (previously in famous local band The Young Ones) heard a local group, the Glory Cykle. He was so impressed that he approached them about becoming their manager. The band -- guitarists Ralph Stevens and Jeff Hardin, bassist Grady Pope, organist Rick Wilson, and drummer/vocalist Ken Allen -- practiced at the studio Sossamon had built in his parent's garage, and by the end of the year, Sossamon took up the drummer’s seat to free up Allen as lead vocalist. Band’s name was shortened to Cykle and in early 1969 they began recording an album consisting entirely of Sossamon originals. The resultant eponymous LP was released later that year as a private pressing of 500 copies on the band’s own Label Records. But despite the 1969 release date, “Cykle” sounds straight from the 1966-67 garage-punk-psychedelic book. * “When the most popular garage bands of the day were moving further and further away from the genre’s “less is more” production ideal, Cykle offered a raw, authentic take on what garage rock was meant to sound like.” - Psychedelized. LP $21 SKU:17886

FINCHLEY BOYS- Everlasting Tributes DELUXE DOUBLE CD (70s heavy psych)Label:REACTION Parasol Label Group's reissues imprint, Reaction Recordings, is thrilled to announce the long-overdue deluxe 2xCD and digital reissue of The Finchley Boys' 1972 album, "Everlasting Tributes." For those who don't know, it's a great wasted heavy psych record, featuring cuts like their hard-rocking reinterpretation of the Kinks song ‘I'm Not Like Everybody Else’, the superb ‘It All Ends’, and the best cut for me, the anti-establishment anthem ‘Restrictions’. This is the only album ever released—and it’s a good one—by this band from Champaign, Illinois. Known for their great live shows and theatrical antics, including some stage work with a live boa constrictor five years before Alice Cooper made it famous, the Finchley Boys were ahead of their time. They started recording in the fall of 1968 and throughout 1969, but those songs would not be heard until the release of "Everlasting Tributes." Although the original album has been bootlegged many times over the decades these pirated releases delivered poor sound quality. This, the first official, definitive, band-authorized CD/digital release for the Finchley's material, was carefully restored from the original master tapes. Considerable time was then spent remastering the tracks to bring them up to modern day standards. The deluxe 2xCD package features a second disc of bonus tracks, entitled "Neverending Tributes," which includes a recently rediscovered trove of recordings from 1968-1969. Also includes a 24-page booklet featuring liner notes by Ugly Things Zine scribe Scott Wilkerson as well as a slew of rare/never-before-seen photos. CD $25 SKU:18035

GREYLOCK MANSION-ST (pure underground 68)Label:Lysergic Sound- Included are three inserts—a 4 page folder with pictures and text; a psychedelic poster w/lyrics; and a color reproduction of a poster from Unifest 1970 in New Mexico. Another buried treasure of pure underground psychedelia: GREYLOCK MANSION, who emerged loudly from Tucson, Arizona in 1968. The band's sound (as heard on the opening track of LSD's best-selling "St. Albert's Dream" compilation) is powerful, deep underground psych with thick, dominant funereal organ and distorted fuzz guitar and effects, backed by heavy precise drumming. The Doors and Iron Butterfly influences are evident, and a touch of early Black Sabbath’s slow grinding sludge rears its head at times. For all the desired heaviness, which is plentiful, the lyrics might be even more impressive—dark, meaningful, thoughtful, masterfully constructed and thought provoking, with mystical, sci-fi and otherworldly themes like time travel, death, and other wicked inventiveness. It would be difficult to believe that Greylock Mansion's lyrics and music were written by a 19-year old, until you realize that the teen in question was Merl Reagle, soon to be a master wordsmith, raconteur—oh, and the most famous crossword puzzle author in the U.S. Reagle was syndicated in the largest newspapers in the country, made numerous television and movie appearances, and was even portrayed on the enormously popular TV show, The Simpsons.
Roaring heavy fuzz guitar, doomy organ and spiritually mysterious psychedelia—a robust and compelling mix of original songs that meld science fiction, horror movie themes and Reagle’s lyrics. Greylock Mansion's musicianship, heavy yet melodic tunes, and songwriting are superior to many of the “big name” bands of the time; they can finally and deservedly be heard and appreciated by fans of the heavy ultra-obscure underground psychedelic gems of the era.
Nine original songs, all of restored and remastered from the original 1969 studio reels. Three of the tracks were released on private label 45 micro-pressings in 1970 and 1971; the other six cuts are released for the first time!
•A true masterpiece of 60’s U.S. underground psychedelic rock, finally re-issued
•This is a fully licensed Lysergic Sound Distributors release, presented only as a limited vinyl release.•Comes with three inserts! LP $21 SKU:17972

MAY BLITZ - ESSEN 1970 -rare 70s Pink Floyd style psych Label:GARDEN OF DELIGHT Comes in deluxe gatefold cover. The 8-page insert in LP size contains a long band history in German and English, a detailed discography, numerous cover and label repros, as well as a personal retrospective report by guitarist and singer James Black.May Blitz have been compared to Led Zeppelin, the early Black Sabbath, or early Uriah Heep—the only difference being that May Blitz never had their great breakthrough. Their history ended after only two LPs which are today in high demand. On Tuesday, 22nd October 1970, the group performed in the Gruga Hall at the third Essen Pop & Blues Festival. The event was recorded semi-professionally by the promoters. The recordings were mastered in a first-class sound studio with great effort and care. The sound, however, is naturally not as good as that of the two studio LPs. Comes in deluxe gatefold cover. The 8-page insert in LP size contains a long band history in German and English, a detailed discography, numerous cover and label repros, as well as a personal retrospective report by guitarist and singer James Black. A must for collectors. It is the first legitimate release of a May Blitz live recording. LP $26 SKU:18028

SKY SAXON -In Praise Of Our Father (1976 psych)- PURPLE VINYLLabel:SWORDFISH (England) : Limited edition of 300 copies on purple vinyl. . It contains an insert with comments from Djin Aquarian. Swordfish proudly presents a collection of the rarest recordings of the legendary Sky Saxon/Arelich Sunlight Aquarian. "In Praise Of Our Father" (aka "Yod Ship #3) is a free-form psychedelic jam featuring Sky fronting the Spirit of 76 band. Originally pressed as a one-sided LP, it is scarce beyond belief as only 3 copies are known to exist in the entire world. "Lovers Cosmic Voyage" is one of several one-off projects Sky had going in the mid @70's, it leans towards the more cosmic/Ya Ho Wha side of his output. Originally released in minute quantities around 1976, it is most likely to have been recorded circa 1973 and around the same time as "In Praise Of Our Father" As an added bonus 2 previously unreleased tracks, "Hope" and "Wolves and Dogs" have been included LP $34 SKU:18037

SYSTEMADDICTS -BROKEN HEARTED ON THE NULLABOR-Label:OFF THE HIP Systemaddicts are a fun, energetic six piece garage punk group from Adelaide, South Australia. They were formed by original members Liam Convey, guitarist, singer and songwriter and his bass guitarist sister Kaeli when they were still teenagers. They were joined by Jamie Woolaway on organ, Frank Boulden on drums, later replaced by current drummer Elliot Hoskin, their younger brother Rory, on Trombone (who was only 16 at the time), and Tasman Strachan on second guitar. Their style originally was a blend of the hardcore punk that Liam had been doing in his previous teenaged group The Subtitles, with the more sixties influenced keyboard style Jamie was playing with The Molting Vultures.

THOR'S HAMMER - ST (Icelandic garage legends! 65-67)Label:GARDEN OF DELIGHTS Danish band’s Metronome album (1971), the one and only record by one of those groups that promised much, but never went further than an eponymous debut; their music was close to Burnin' Red Ivanhoe, Blast Furnace and the jazzy style of bands like Traffic, with long tracks with killer wah-wah guitars, swirling organs, wild vocals and twisted psychedelic sax-breaks; ‘Mexico’ is perhaps the most effective track on the album (paraphrasing the well-known sax riff from Traffic's "Freedom Rider"), although the whole record is strong. Their one and only LP holds the sad record of being the most bootlegged LP in Denmark. This first legal LP reissue is accompanied by a 4-page insert in LP format, containing a detailed band history in German, English and Danish language, a comprehensive discography including side and solo projects, cover and label reproductions, and band photographs. A deluxe edition, hand-numbered and limited to 1,000 copies, pressed on 180g vinyl. LP $26 SKU:18026

TIN HOUSE- ST (70s powerhouse rock ) w liners, rare photos, insert plus pic slv EP -Label:LION !•Comes with 16-page color booklet w/liner notes by Doug Sheppard (Ugly Things) and photos from the archive of drummer Mike Logan•In the twinkling universe of virtuoso electric guitarists that followed in the wake of the genre’s progenitor Jimi Hendrix, perhaps one of the most deserving of renewed recognition is Floyd Radford of the band Tin House, a little known three piece that signed briefly to CBS records in 1970 and released one highly prized album a year later. The overdriven, fluid guitar work—heavy on the wah-wah pedal—is brought to the fore by a beefy full production." —Richard Allen, Shindig! MagazineTin House were so good—their music was a hard-rocking onslaught of lust, chops and powerhouse riffs that gripped like an alligator bite—they were signed to Epic Records out of high school. They were respected by Leslie West and Johnny and Edgar Winter. Their album (released in 1971) was produced by Rick Derringer. But like other almost famous bands, Tin House fell away into unjust obscurity. Tin House's focus was on heavy rock like the sex-fueled opener, ‘I Want Your Body,' and standout track ‘Be Good and Be Kind,’ with a catchy up-and-down, down-and-up riff played adeptly by guitar prodigy Floyd Radford, and a driving monster beat laid down by drummer Mike Logan; the song tears in as a fast as a Florida hurricane and sweeps the listener up into its vortex for two-and-a-half minutes of energized bliss. Yet the album also showed diversity: Radford’s melancholy ballad ‘Tomorrow;’ the jivin’ honky tonk of ‘30 Weight Blues’ (a tribute to the band’s 1962 Ford Econoline van); ‘Lady of the Silent Opera,’ which featured orchestration by seasoned studio musicians from New York City’s Local 802 Union to underscore its positive message of “look to the heaven—smile to the blue sky.” This Lion Productions reissue includes everything Tin House recorded for Epic, including two previously unreleased tracks and the elusive (and unique) single versions of 'I Want Your Body' and 'Be Good and Be Kind'—all taken directly from 24-bit/96kHz master tape transfers. Four panel insert has liner notes by Doug Sheppard (Ugly Things) and photos from the archive of drummer Mike Logan. Lean, fluid, tight, and the best hard rock album from the USA you probably never heard of (until now)!•All tracks taken from the master tapes $16 SKU:17823

TYLL- Sexphonie(75 acid rock psych)Label:MENTAL EXPERIENCE Highly inventive kraut / psych album (heavy on the “psych”) related to Eulenspygel.Originally released in 1975, “Sexphonie” offers a mix of acid-rock, hard-psych, polit-rock and progressive / folky sounds with some eastern influences. Great studio production and outstanding guitar playing courtesy of Teflon Fonfara (who once blew up Camel’s PA system with his tape and delay guitar effects!). Tyll was formed when Teflon was approached by Kerston Records with the intention of releasing a krautrock album. Teflon’s previous group, Tyll Eulenspygel, was not active at that moment, so he assembled a new studio band featuring members and friends of Tyll Eulenspygel. Shrouded in mystery until now, Tyll's "Sexphonie" is a Krautrock curiosity that almost never happened, and it was all created within a matter of weeks from inception of the band through to finished LP. The story is similar to that of the legendary Mammut, with an ad hoc band brought together and given total freedom to do whatever they wanted. Tyll can be seen as the illegitimate step-sister to Eulenspygel, and there was much controversy and even legal action involved and some rivalry between the two bands, especially as Tyll had poached Eulenspygel drummer Günter Klinger. Yet, whereas Eulenspygel had pretty much now lost the plot by 1973, Tyll's sole LP was one of those surprisingly creative gems of the mid 1970s that, to the few that knew it, was a welcome breath of fresh air. *First ever reissue *Insert with liner notes by Alan Freeman (The Crack In The Cosmic Egg) plus reproduction of the rare original booklet /comic. “A tasty rare slice of left-field Krautrock underground related to Eulenspygel.” – Alan Freeman (The Crack In The Cosmic Egg)“Truly wonderful and extremely little known krautrock released on the Kerston label (same imprint as the Gaa LP) and with something of their widely variable and fascinating approach.” - Mutant SoundsLP $28 SKU:17715

JULY- Second of July ( Stunning demos by one of the most important psychedelic bands to ever exist ) -Label:ACME/LION •Digipack with 12-page booklet detailing the history of July and their recordings•Available again on CD after more than a decadeBy this time, anyone with an interest in psychedelia that stretches beyond the Beatles or maybe Strawberry Alarm Clock (at a pinch), knows who July is. Well, at least they know that a band called July put out a super rare album that is considered by many to be one of the pinnacles of the psychedelic era. There's no way to overstate the excellence of the album, with its eerie sound, Indian-influenced chord sequences, studio trickery (tape loops/phasing), and heavily reverb-laden vocals. But that’s not the story we’re here to tell. Even before that quintessential psychedelic album was made, band leader Tom Newman was experimenting with home recording equipment. In 1967, he installed basic recording facilities in the bedroom of his flat in an old Victorian house in Ealing. There, he and guitarist Peter Cook tried out ideas, coming up with many of the standout songs from the July album. The demos they recorded display the kind of confidence that Newman feels was lacking in the album proper (yes, the ultra- famous psychedelic classic album!) that they recorded in 1968. Let’s go back to the near-beginning of it all, to a flat in a Victorian house in Ealing, and listen in on demos recorded with DIY alacrity by a studio whiz, tracks which will change the face of psychedelia, eventually, after decades of obscurity.

Although the band broke up in the mid 1980s, they reformed at various times over the next 25 years. But since the release of the anthology, Stop Plus Singles, on Off The Hip Records in 2009, along with a permanent line up (in actual fact, longer than any other incarnation), the band have recorded the power pop splendour of Dig For Plenty in early 2011 and played around Melbourne, Sydney and Adelaide.

JERUSALEM- ST -transparent purple vinyl!Label:LION “Sledgehammer-heavy masterpiece of underground British rock!” —Classic Rock Magazine
“Big fat chords, wailing guitar, punch-drunk bass and straight-ahead solid drums all strutting in your face like some massive guy you just don't want to f**k with.” —Head Heritage"I made the record because they are bloody good and it seems a shame for their sound not to be recorded... right now there's a rawness and excitement..." Ian Gillan, in Disc & Music Echo, January 29th, 1972

Heavy UK hard rock album from 1972, produced by Deep Purple's legendary frontman, Ian Gillan, originally released on the Decca/Deram label. It was Gillan who said of them: “Not many bands really excite me. But this one’s so raw and completely unpretentious. They make the biggest, bloodiest noise you can imagine, tempered with moments of extreme emotion.” And, of course, he’s right—the music is a menacing combination of over-the-top vocals and screaming lead guitars that could easily pass for something from the early British heavy metal scene—or something from the emotional hard core scene of the mid-1990's ('Primitive Man'). A favorite among vinyl collectors, the album is presented here in its ultimate glory, with all tracks direct from the original master tapes, housed in a high quality old-style gatefold cover; insert has liner notes written by bassist Paul Dean + rare photos. Stickered to indicate that this is the purple vinyl edition. Rough, raw, and doomy!
