STONE GARDEN -ST (US. 60s HEAVY PSYCH) Label:GEAR FAB For the late 60’s, there wasn’t a much heavier record thanthis amazing slab of US Heavy Psychedelic/Acid Rock!Stone Garden hailed from a state one could assume was among the last touched by the chemical stimulant-inspired revolution in rock music in the '60s. But you wouldn't be able to tell that from Stone Garden. Cobbled together from live and studio recordings made between 1969 and 1971, the reissue collects virtually every available note by the pack of Idaho teens, including both sides of their lone, extremely rare 45 ("Oceans Inside Me"/"Stop My Thinking"). Aside from that single, all the tracks remained unreleased until appearing as a superbly packaged 1998 Rockadelic LP, reproduced in its entirety on this Gear Fab CD. So is it worth all the archival fuss? Mostly, yes, it really is. Stone Garden is an always blistering and often thrilling racket that splits the difference between the plundering depths of hard rock and the mind-excursion highs of psychedelia (or, more precisely, acid rock), carving out a nifty Western patch of its own. A heady trick for a group of boys from the potato state in the year of Woodstock, and, if dated in minor ways, still body-rattling music decades after the fact. There is some dense riffage (the re-recorded version of "Oceans," "It's a Beautiful Day," an awesome "Woodstick") that comes as close to proto-heavy metal shredding as anything else recorded in or around 1969 (that includes Steppenwolf, Black Sabbath, Iron Butterfly, and Blue Cheer), and the band had both an affinity and knack for scintillating, dual-guitar electric blues ("Stop My Thinking"), although the album's sole outright misstep, "SF Policeman Blues," apes early Grateful Dead a little too closely. But there is plenty of consciousness-expanding, detail-intriguing, and ominous melodic shifts, nifty but queasy coats of echo, Zappa-esque avant-garde effects ("Bastard"), and surprisingly mature and hip lyrics -- even if the performances are not exactly nuanced. Subtle Stone Garden was not. But the music can cut you off at the knees and knock the wind out of you, which is pretty impressive stuff. CD $10 SKU:18837

SMITH, CRAIG - Love is our Existence (1969 psych weirdness)Label:Maitreya Apache Music Craig Smith was an extraordinarily gifted songwriter and musician who seemed poised for a successful career in the 1960s music business until his life was derailed by drugs and schizophrenia. In 1969 clean-cut, charismatic Craig Smith became Maitreya Kali, a dark, disturbed psychedelic Messiah figure with a black widow spider tattooed on his third eye. He laid out his strange vision on a self-released double-album Apache/Inca (1972), which would become a sought-after artifact of the psychedelic era. Success came easily for Craig Smith. In 1963, right out of high school he became a cast member of the popular Andy Williams TV show as one of the Good Time Singers, a wholesome folk ensemble that recorded for Capitol Records. Next he landed one of the lead parts in a new TV show, The Happeners, about a Greenwich Village folk group. But when the TV pilot was not picked up, he set out on his own musical path with the folk-rock duo Chris & Craig and then the more psychedelic Penny Arkade, produced and managed by Mike Nesmith of the Monkees. Throughout this period Smith was constantly writing songs, some of which were recorded by other artists, including the Monkees ("Salesman"), Andy Williams ("Holly", "Christmas Holiday"), the Robbs ("Rapid Transit"), and Glen Campbell ("Country Girl"). But soon afterwards, his life took a dark, terrifying turn. Turning to LSD and Eastern mysticism he journeyed through Asia along the hippie trail where he was brutally attacked, raped, and left for dead. He was never the same again. As Maitreya Kali, he self-released the now legendary Apache and Inca albums in 1972 before disappearing into the shadows. He spent much of the 1970s in prison or in mental institutions before eventually drifting into homelessness on the streets of Hollywood. He died in his sleeping bag in North Hollywood Park in March 2012. Craig's older brother Gary contacted Stax with a trove of unreleased music. The best of those songs are presented on Love Is Our Existence. Professionally recorded in Los Angeles studios between 1966 and 1971, these previously unheard songs reveal a singer and songwriter of breathtaking depth and talent. Remastered from acetate discs and master tapes. CD $19 SKU:20359

SMITH, CRAIG - (MAITREYA KALI) APACHE-INCA(1969 psych weirdness)Label:Maitreya Apache Music The first ever official release of Craig Smith's psychedelic folk masterpiece 'Apache-Inca'. In 1972, after changing his name to Maitreya Kali, Craig compiled and custom-pressed two LPs documenting his musical journey from 1967-72, including tracks with the Penny Arkade. Combined into a double album set, 'Apache-Inca' was given away or sold hand to hand on the street before Maitreya... and Craig... disappeared into the shadows. Only a handful of original copies are known to exist. The last time one was offered for sale, it went for over $10,000. Pirate copies routinely sell for over $400. Released by arrangement with the Smith family, comes in digipak with 32-page booklet. CD $22 SKU:22321

SOLEDAD BROTHERS-The Hardest Walk (Stones/ 60s style Detroit ) -Label:ALIVE At their best, Soledad Brothers recall the Rolling Stones when Mick and Keith were fresh-faced bluesheads in the mid-Sixties: The prolific Detroit foursome kicks out solid, harmonica-laced blues riffs without sounding derivative or cheesily nostalgic. - Rolling Stone CD $10 SKU:23710

SONIC DAWN- INTO THE LONG NIGHT (STONER PSYCH)-Label:HEAVY PSYCH SOUNDS 'Perception' is the debut album by The Sonic Dawn from Copenhagen. The sound can be described as a mix between a '68 biker movie soundtrack and the signature Scandinavian psychedelic sound. A coherent album full of twangy guitars, dreamy vocals, sitar and groovy rhythms. Several tracks feature the immensely talented organist Erik 'Errka' Petersson of Siena Root and Dean Allen Foyd. Originally released on Nasoni in 2015. Fans of psychedelic rock, neo-psych, freak beat
and classic rock will surely enjoy this record. CD $14 SKU:20052

SONIC DAWN- ECLIPSE (STONER PSYCH)-Label:HEAVY PSYCH SOUNDS The rays of The Sonic Dawn are like a reminder that reality is only temporary. Flickering between light and darkness, their sound burns with an intensity that places the Danish trio among the top psychedelic acts of their time. Following their first two album releases, The Sonic Dawn have toured Europe more or less constantly, only returning home to focus on their biggest work to date: Eclipse. Their third full-length, is the product of a full year's labor, with all 13 tracks carefully selected from among over 40 candidates. Inspired by personal tragedies and the current meltdown of the world as we know it, the songs deal with a feeling of despair that many will recognize, but also seem to say that one can heal and come out stronger, if one dares take the leap. The result is a cinematic journey in sonic technicolor. Here, even the catchiest melody casts a mysterious shadow, and every mind-altering solo is torn out of Emil Bureau's guitar as if it owed him money. CD $14 SKU:23062

SSM (Szymanski, Shettler, Morris)- Break Your Arm For Evolution -with Dan of the Black KEys on Guitar !) Label:ALIVE The follow-up to their acclaimed 2006 self-titled debut. "Break Your Arm For Evolution" finds John Szymanski (vox, keyboards), Dave Shettler (drums, programming), and Marty Morris (vox, guitar) further expanding their sonic horizons and fearlessly morphing genres. SSM likes to flirt and "Break Your Arm For Evolution" is not merely a title but an earnest philosophy : the endlessly catchy Daft Punk-meets-The Seeds of "Déjà Vu," the psychedelic kraut rock'n'roll of "Regenerate Your Face" transforms itself into the synth pop of "Let's Make a Baby", which metamorphoses into the indie alternative dance "Start Dancing" and quickly burst into the punk rock "Emotional Tourist", all the while challenging the traditional conventions of pop songwriting. "It's common knowledge that you can't teach an old garage band new tricks. Or, at least I thought it was common knowledge that garage bands forever stayed in the garage, until I put on this new track by SSM, "Start Dancing." On this number from their second album, SSM have updated a steadfastly rigid genre with a synthetic, robot groove that bridges the divide between Detroit's storied histories of techno and garage." - I Rock Cleveland CD $10 SKU:7234

STONEAGE HEARTS- Guilty As Sin (Aussie garage psych) LAST FEW! Label:ALIVE LAST FEW! Australian garage/fuzz album featuring Dom Mariani of The Stems. “Australia has produced some mighty fine psychedelicized garage bands over the years with the early Hoodoo Gurus being a big personal favorite. In that tradition of vintage acid-fried rock comes the Melbourne-based Stoneage Hearts. Guilty As Sin is engaging from start to finish as it veers from dense, organ-enhanced pop ("Eye of a Lie" and "Your Greed") to energetic blazers full of snarling guitars. Also check out the cool staccato rhythms on "Green With Envy," which show sophisticated but still accessible musicianship. SWAMP DOGG - Rat On! digipack- Label:ALIVE Digipack cd RAT ON!” (1971), was ranked as having one of the top ten worst album covers of all time, an achievement that Swamp Dogg is rightfully proud of. Vocally, Swamp Dogg sounds like a cross between General Johnson (of Chairmen of the Board) and Van Morrison; as a songwriter, he’s his own man. With the exception of Sly Stone, no other soul men of the period were investigating controversial topics with such infectious musicality and good humor. – AMG CD $10 SKU:15001

SWAMP DOGG - Total Destruction to Your Mind! digipack W OBI CARD Label:ALIVE TOTAL DESTRUCTION TO YOUR MIND” (1970), has been called “one of the most gloriously gonzo soul recordings of all time”.The title track is a slam-bangin’ chunk of rock and funk that’s pushed by a great session band including guitarist Jesse Carr and drummer Johnny Sandlin, and is easily Dogg’s finest moment on record. But the rest of this is great too, ranging from the consumer nightmare “Synthetic World” to the paternity blues of “Mama’s Baby, Daddy’s Maybe.” – AMG CD $10 SKU:15002

SWAMP RATS- DISCO STILL SUCKS ( primal 60s punk ) -Label:GET HIP Primal 60's Punk and melodic garage from McKeesport, Pennsylvania! The wicked torrent of fuzzed-out mayhem these Steel City hooligans burned onto their ‘66 and ‘67 single sides is legendary, from a raunchy "Louie Louie" that drinks the Kingsmen under the table, to the head-smash of "Psycho," to the gunpowdered cover of the Sparkles’ "No Friend of Mine." But you get not only all the singles on this first-ever proper reissue of their material, but four bona-fide killers from the vaults, including an original muscle-car fuzz romp called "Hey Freak"; an extended version of "Tobacco Road" that’s a shotgun wedding of Nashville Teens R&B hedonism and Blues Magoos Bronx bombshells; a fine bluesy original called "I’m Going Home"; and a spiffy cover of the Kinks’ "She’s Got Everything." With the band members telling their story for the first time in the extensive liners, unseen photos galore, and crisp sound, this is of the best 60's reissue albums ever! CD $10 SKU:22979

SWELL MAPS- Sweep the Desert ((70s early post-punk rock legends with Nikki Sudden)-Label:ALIVE Like International Rescue, Sweep the Desert keeps the memory of Swell Maps alive. While the material gathered here might not be fully representative of the band's sound, it does an excellent job of underscoring Swell Maps' significance alongside such illustrious contemporaries as the Pop Group, the Fall and PiL. - Pop Matters CD $10 SKU:23709

WEIRDOS Destroy All Music (70s LA PUNK LEGENDS) STARBURST VINYL W. ORIG INSERT! Label:BOMP The Weirdos were in many ways the greatest of L.A.'s punk bands. In early 1977 their mighty sound and singular style were the big-bang igniting the L.A. punk rock scene, as they proclaimed "we're not punks, we're weirdos from Hollyweird!". This wasn't just goofy sloganeering, this was a stance intended to distinguish them from the burgeoning punk rock scenes in New York and London. The Weirdos were not only bringing a new sound and writing teen punks anthems, they were also responsible for their graphics (posters, covers, flyers) and designed their own clothes! Their 1977 Bomp single "Destroy All Music" was a nihilistic anthem, and is now regarded as a classic, and by the time they made their mini-LP two years later they had turned into a powerful, polished band, without losing any of their outrageous attitude. "Destroy All Music - 30th Anniversary Edition " compiles the now classic 1977 EP Bomp and the 1979 "Who, What, When, Where, Why?" mini-LP in its entirety and includes previously unreleased early demos. WHITE LIGHT (UK)-PARABLE (private press garage psych 1974)Label:SOMMER On vinyl, here's a reissue of the superb 1974 X-ian private press garage-psych LP by a band from Glasgow. Featuring raw fuzz guitar, Vox Continental organ sounds, a healthy dose of feedback and influences from The Who as well as Black Sabbath and tough bluesrock, WHITE LIGHT didn't spread the message of The Lord in church, but at loud clubs and big rock venues. In 1972 the guys were finalists in a talent contest organized by Melody Maker magazine. The band's album includes the side-long title-track which has to be heard to be believed. In Hans Pokora's '7001 Record Collectors Dream' guide 'Parable' has been given the maximum rarity scale rating. This reissue includes an insert with liner notes and photos. LP $25 SKU:23551

WILD CHERRIES-16 POUNDS OF R&B( 1967-68 Kinks Pretty Things style) Label:GROOVIE Back in the years 1967-1968 Melbourne's The Wild Cherries put out a handful of exciting singles (on the Festival label) influenced by a.o. The Kinks and Pretty Things. Unfortunately, at the time the band's music was considered too wild, unconventional and uncommercial for a full album. This 16-track release sets the record straight! The LP includes an insert with tons of photos and info. If you dig Aussies s.a. The Missing Links, early Master's Apprentices, Purple Hearts or Loved Ones, then '16 Pound Of R&B' is an essential title for your collection. If you are into '60s savage stuff like The Kinks or The Pretty Things or even in to more late '60s psychedelia, this is for you. LP $22 SKU:22903

WILSON, CHRIS, and the SNEETCHES- ST Flamin Groovies related power pop ) - Label:MARILYN Wilson, who was the George Harrison to Cyril Jordan's Lennon/McCartney during the Groovies' most British Invasion-inspired phase, is completely in charge here; along with three spirited live renditions of Flamin Groovies classics, "Between the Lines," "I'll Cry Alone," and, interestingly, "Slow Death" (which was written and recorded by the Roy Loney incarnation of the band before Wilson even joined), the album includes full-band remakes of songs that had appeared on Wilson's 1991 acoustic solo album Random Centuries, including an appealing, Byrds-like rendition of the winsome "If Wishes Were Horses." In true Groovies tradition, a faithful cover of a '60s classic, "Goin' Back" (a Gerry Goffin and Carole King gem that the Byrds themselves, among others, had recorded) rounds out the selection. Wilson is in fine voice, and the Sneetches, as always, sound great, but the arrangements tend to wander a bit too much; although the album is a '60s-vintage hair, over 30 minutes long, only seven songs fill that space, with only two under the all-important four-minute mark. After two albums for Nasoni Records and being part of the Fruits De Mer Records family, the band signed with Mega Dodo for their third album. Here Sky Picnic introduces elements that blur musical genres, specifically songs tinged with jazz grooves, sing-along psych-pop and heavier riffs that only hint at what the future holds. CD $18 SKU:22542

SMYTH, MORDECAI -STICKY TAPE AND RUST Syd Barrett psych style)-Label:MEGA DODO CD-version presented in a rusty tin, (only few with button an postcard)! It's impossible not to reel out the obvious reference points of vintage English psychedelia (Syd Barrett, Small Faces, Kevin Ayers, Sell Out-era The Who etc.), but the songs remain strong throughout, while songs such as 'Sinister Cyclist' and 'Don't Cross Colin' infuse these more retro aspects with a wry, Half Man Half Biscuit-like humour that cant help but endear. When 'Big Hit' tells of a man who is "a big cheese at the new exclusive restaurant" and always trying on ladies underwear, you might suddenly feel the urge to throw on the Kinks' 'Face To Face', but the sunshine nostalgia harmonies of 'Here I Stand' and sly, creeping organ of closer 'Georgina Jones' point towards a band that would struggle to write a bad song even if they tried. Welcome Mordecai Smyth CD $15 SKU:22543

Features two bonus tracks. Digipack. Spot's single, eponymous album was released in 1972 and is one of Switzerland's rarest collector's items from the 1970s.Part of its mystique comes from the fact that its only availability outside the relatively few copies of the LP in existence was on a bootleg vinyl release. STONEBIRDS -Time(French heavy rock SAALE!Label:ACID BUZZ Hailing from central Britanny (France), STONEBIRDS came out in 2008 as a quintet, inspired by both surrounding desolated landscapes and bands like Queens Of The Stone Age, Kyuss, The Melvins and Alice In Chains. The 2018 album "Time" confirms the band's unique style matured on "Into The Fog" and its ability to write deeply emotional and complex songs. Once again recorded at Kerwax, this record is darker and more contrasted with heavier metal parts and lighter atmospheric moments. STONEBIRDS asserts itself as a singular voice in heavy music landscape. CD $10 SKU:20177

SUBJECT ESQ.- ST (1972 fusion prog rock) SAALE!Label:Ohrwaschl digipack reissue of the only release (Epic, 1972) by Subject Esq. before they changed their name to Sahara; complex progressive rock with fusion elements, showing classical influences, and demonstrating superb musicianship throughout. Comparable to many other bands of the era, like Thirsty Moon, Camel, etc.—in fact, they have a similar degree of complexity and inventiveness (multi-tracked sax and guitars, and so on) to many bands from the Canterbury scene. Subject Esq. had unique touches of their own, with an unusual use of vocals, time signatures, and a wide range of solo instruments, all of which are given plenty of room in the lengthy instrumental sections. An odd major label album, so perhaps it’s no surprise that they left CBS to record their more esoteric Sahara albums.
CD $10 SKU:21438

SUNFLOWERS- CASTLE SPELL(heavy psych punk shredders) SAALE!Label: STOLEN BODY One can say the band is young and restless, but they bring a well thought mutated slab of paranoia filled heavy shredders, while the hazed sunset fades away in the rearview mirror, darkening the desert and filling the air with some energized psych punk auras. 'Castle Spell' is a 10-story palace, each of them with its own atmosphere, its gloomy and murderous tenants, all narrated by Carol's docile voice and Carlos's intrusive howls. CD $15 SKU:23294

SWEDISH FINNISH- ST(Guitar pop)Label:GREEN MONKEY he key to the Swedish Finnish pop magic are hooks that earworm their way into your brain, making them instantly memorable. The glorious three-part harmonies soar through songs, guitars intertwine and the beat is steady. Delicious slices of sonic heaven. Swedish Finnish proudly shouts their influences loud and clear - the chunky 'Mine Is Better' channels T. Rex; 'Don't Do Anything (I Wouldn't Do)' is like a long-lost Ronettes song (with the boys doing the singing). 'Hungover' and 'Marla's House' recall their biggest heroes, The Beatles, while 'I'm Leaving' takes the classic chord progression of Them's 'Gloria,' and puts it into a brand new context CD $14 SKU:22823

TAMBLES-DON'T YOU WANT TO KNOW THE TAMBLES? (Dutch powerpop) Label:BICKERTON Hailing from the Dutch town ofa Gouda, capital of the world of cheese, The Tambles recorded an awesome, kick ass album, created with pieces of garage-rock, powerpop, pub-rock, rock'n'roll and folk-rock. CD $14 SKU:21802

WEED DEMON CRATER MAKER (stoner rock) GOLD VINYLLabel:ELECTRIC VALLEY Not for the faint of heart, 'Crater Maker' launches with eleven minutes of instrumental stoner rock to set the mood. By the time you get to the devastating vocals of 'Serpent Merchant' you know you're in for a rare treat. Infused with bluesy roots and defined by a search for the perfect tone, 'Crater Maker' is a sonic quest like few others. Their worship of bands like Sleep and Electric Wizard is apparent throughout, but these Columbus, Ohio doomsters are clearly in touch with another side of themselves on this record. An album that rewards multiple listens, it promises to be a worthwhile listen for doom freaks across the globe. Electric Valley Records has once more signed a winner - are you ready to join them on the journey to this riff filled land? LP $25 SKU:23208

WOLFGANG -Eliminate Hate (1970 TEXAS PSYCH)Label:OUT-SIDER Originally recorded in 1970, previously unreleased "After more than 30 years hidden in a dusty storage unit, we present the previously unreleased album from one of the most enigmatic bands from the Texas psychedelic scene. An unusual blend of 60s garage-punk, Texas psychedelia (think 13th Floor Elevators or Golden Dawn), The Seeds, The Misunderstood, late era Velvet Underground, ‘70s era Stones and ‘70s pre-punk swagger. Awesome distorted steel guitar, super snotty vocals and the killer “Wolf” Mike Long (Stone Axe, Josefus) on electric guitar. Wolfgang were a young band from Pasadena, Texas, discovered by legendary Texas mogul C.L. Millburn (Sea Ell Records, The Coachmen, Knights Bridge, etc). Little is known about the band and what exactly happened to them after recording this album. But we do know that they were leaded by the great “Wolf” Mike Long (guitar player who was also part of Stone Axe and a temporary member of Josefus) and they also featured an unusual steel guitar player whose electrified sound recalls Glenn Campbell (The Misunderstood, Juicy Lucy) at his best. In 1970, Wolfgang recorded a set of songs written by Milburn, originally intended as demos to secure a deal with a bigger company. Eight songs were taped using Milburn’s trusty Sony two-track reel-to-reel, the same one he used to record childhood friend Townes Van Zandt in late ’66-’67. The major company deal never came so the tapes were stored at the Sea Ell archives for many years and Wolfgang disappeared in the mist of time. In 1994, three tracks from the Wolfgang sessions appeared on a compilation called “The History Of Texas Garage Bands In The '60s Volume 1: The Sea Ell Label Story”, released by the Collectables label. They were credited to “The Wolves”. Several years later, Michael Greisman from Cicadelic Records discovered the complete Wolfgang recordings while investigating the Sea Ell tape archive and Milburn revealed to him the real history behind the Wolfgang project. The complete recordings have remained unreleased until now. LP $22 SKU:22828
