STRANGERS IN A STRANGE LAND - BOMP STORE EXCLUSIVE
You should know Alec Palao and Paul Kopf from their activities with The Seeds, Magic Christian etc, but the hearts of both of these seasoned musicians lie with their own project Strangers In A Strange Land - named simply for the way they feel. The Strangers sound is a recalibration that draws upon the time-tested precepts of strong melody, lyrical integrity and a solid groove. They happily admit that the sound they create breaks no new ground; in fact, if anything, Strangers intentionally purvey the old-school rock and pop mannerisms they both hold so dear - because it’s the only way the duo know how.
The 2016 debut album was mostly engineered and produced by Palao in his home studio, and features the phased Who Sell Out mannerisms of 'The Taxidermist' and a repurposed Gene Clark melody in ‘Onomatopoeia'. The redoubtable Prairie Prince (Tubes, Rundgren, XTC) plays drums.
The more recent 2021 release - also self-titled - was recorded during the pandemic, is also largely all their own work, but has the additional support of Prairie and the late Clem Burke (Blondie) on drums, and a more sophisticated outlook replete with multiple harmonies, strings, horns and other orchestrated ear-candy. The tracks ‘Broken Tambourine’ and ‘Poison Chalice’ were produced by the legendary Shel Talmy (Kinks, Who, Bowie).
“Full of 60s pop sensibilities, wry observations and masterful arrangements” - Shindig
