DOOBIE BROTHERS- Long Train Runnin- 4 CD BOX SET with BOOKLET Label:RHINO MARKED OUT BAR CODE BUT SEALED -One would be hard-pressed to find a band more perfectly symbolic of the good-times politics-be-damned esprit de cannabis that symbolized a good chunk of 70's rock. While the Beach Boys were busy becoming an anachronism, the Doobs effectively took their mantle, fusing an array of musical Americana--be it blues, country, folk, or gospel (they saved jazz and funk for their Michael McDonald-fronted incarnation)--into a remarkably popular string of albums and radio hits by simply asking not much more of us than to "Listen to the Music." SPIRITS & WORM-ST (RARE 1969 West coast style psych)Label:AUDIO CLARITY he only album released by psychedelic quintet Spirits & Worm is the stuff of confused legend. The group conjured the kind of sound heavily associated with the West Coast style of psychedelia, as mastered by San Francisco-based Jefferson Airplane. But Spirits & Worm was based in Long Island, New York, laying down the tracks for this A&M release at Bill Stahl's Ultrasonic Studios in Hempstead, where Iron Butterfly and Vanilla Fudge cut most of their work. Spirits & Worm featured chief songwriter Carlos Hernandez on fiery lead guitar, Tommy Parris on subdued bass and vocals, Artie Hicles Junior on drums, with Alfred Scotti on rhythm guitar and vocals, and adding to the Jefferson Airplane reference, the emotive tones of Adrianne Maurici. Despite the album being a fine set of songs dealing, sex, death and other grand relationship themes, the album was pulled from the shelves almost immediately after the first copies were circulated in the New York area, the legend having it that A&M executives were shocked and dismayed by the image of two goats resting on a grave as the front cover, fearing occult references in an era riven by Manson Family hysteria and the situation of a Zodiak Killer at large. The album has been renedered exceedingly rare, this welcome reissue placing it more readily into reach. LP $22 SKU:23720

Rick Vittenson is a Beach Boys-Hollies-Who fanatic who writes for Crawdaddy! magazine. Both had previously played in several garage-college bands during the 60s. Combining their mutual love for Sixties music, Athanor was born. With the help of top studio musicians, they recorded and self-released three 45s between 1973 and 1975 (the first one produced by Mark Breyer, with whom Rick had played in pre-Skooshny band Brevity) which are now highly sought-after by fans of obscure psychedelic pop. All of them are featured here in stellar sound taken from the master tapes along with previously unreleased studio tracks and superb sounding home demos (1973-1981), plus a new song recorded in 2006 in the same vein as their vintage recordings. COUNTRY FUNK -ST (1970 psych/blues/country) Label:SLIPSTREAM First released in May 1970, Country Funk's debut was a confident and heady mix of psych, blues rock and country rock. Despite achieving little success in their day, 40 years on the "Funkers" are now highly regarded, finally achieving the credit that they were originally denied. The 'Country Funk'-LP was released in May 1970 after a few name and line up changes, plus a short prison sentence. At the album's heart lie the influences of Buffalo Springfield, Poco and a dose of hairy Byrds, Moby Grape and the Dead. Although not a classic, this loosely groovin' but tight collection of songs moves along nicely with genuine heart and soul." DOMNICKS - Super Real (Stems DM3 Someloves)Label:CITADEL digipack Their debut album Super Real marks a coming of age for The DomNicks. Forged by Perth based Dom Mariani and Nick Sheppard, the band is a powerful blend of swagger 'n' roll rock, soul and pop smarts. Mariani is best known as the driving force behind The Stems, DM3 and The Someloves, while Sheppard's pedigree boasts 80's Bristol punks The Cortinas and thereafter as Mick Jones' replacement in the 1983-86 line-up of The Clash. In 2007 the pair teamed up with Howard Shawcross (The Elks, The Riptides) on bass and Marz Frisina on drums, quickly developing into a very 'hang loose' combo. Playing a mix of Dom and Nick's originals with a spread of 60's and 70's garage and soul classics, they are a band of seasoned players punching well above their collective musical weight. Super Real continues in the tradition of The DomNicks' previous recording, Hey Rock 'n' Roller (Off The Hip 2009). Expanding on Hey Rock 'n' Roller's gutsy guitar driven sound, Super Real takes a ride through blues, soul, funk, and classic guitar pop influences to create one seamless musical journey fuelled by the vim and vigour of a noble era. GREEN PAJAMAS- SUMMER OF LUST (former Bomp band!) -Label:GREEN MONKEY In 1984 Jeff Kelly and Joe Ross recorded a mess of songs on a 4-track reel-to-reel up in Joe's attic. They released it locally as a cassette, 'Summer Of Lust'. If you hear the Pajamas referred to as psyche-anything it springs from here. We are making Summer of Lust available to the public for the first time in twenty-two years. About time. What you get here is two young guys filled with wild inspiration. Nothing slick. Nothing professional. Just beautiful. How did we get here? GMR Prez Dyer bought the cassette in 1984. Loved it. Called em up. Re-released the cassette. In 1989, Greg Shaw from Bomp started Ubik records in the UK and released it on vinyl to underground acclaim. After that, obscurity. Joe Ross has threatened to release it on his own Endgame label for years, but the threats were idle. 2012 is time to get it done. Taken from previously unreleased acetates and studio tapes, 'Songs From The Family Tree' charts the groups hitherto-undocumented progress from 1967 to 1969 as they slowly evolved from their original, Hollies-inspired psychedelic pop direction to create a more individual identity. LOVE SCULPTURE -ANOTHER HELPING (1968 w DAVE EDMUNDS).Label:VOGON Love Sculpture was Dave Edmunds, David William Edwards and John David. When they recorded 'Sabre Dance' for John Peel, who was so impressed that he played it twice in one programme, on 6th October 1968, it became an unexpected hit. At the time the band had only recorded it as a session track, but, as producer Bernie Andrews recalled (in Ken Garner, The Peel Sessions, p.57), after Peel had enthused over it, the piece was re-recorded and rush-released by Parlophone Records and reached number five in the singles chart, eight weeks after being first heard on Top Gear. Love Sculpture recorded three sessions, made up mainly of blues and rock'n'roll cover versions, for Peel, two in 1968 and one in 1969, but were unable to repeat the success of their only hit, despite attempting another rock version of a classical piece, Georges Bizet's 'Farandole', in their final session. This album contains all but one of the songs they recorded for John Peel. After they split up, leader Dave Edmunds continued to perform in a rock'n'roll influenced style, had a successful career in the 1970s both as a solo artist and with his group Rockpile, and picked up airplay on Peel's shows CD $17 SKU:23524

PERMANENT CLEAR LIGHT -COSMIC COMICS (superb psych pop)Label:SULATRON A superb psychedelic pop album by Finland's number one band for phantastic earworms in a psychedelic way! Permanent Clear Light is often referred to as Finland's top psychedelic group. They released their debut album, 'Beyond These Things', in 2014 to a high critical acclaim. After that, the group has released several singles, EPs and appeared on a number of compilation albums on the British Fruits de Mer label. Although PCL's musical roots lie in '60s psychedelia their sound is strictly contemporary. The trio considers the recording studio their main instrument, and their sound is characterised by multi-layered instrumental work and strong melodic vocals. After a creative break, PCL is finally ready to release its second album, 'Cosmic Comics', which shows that the band has travelled a long way through the spheres since their debut. SHOCK ST (obscure 70s garage psych) - Label:GUERSSEN (Spain) previously-unreleased -a Major discovery in the Spanish Psych-Prog collector scene: a previously unreleased album from 1970 by this obscure Spanish garage-psych band . Until now, Shock were a total mystery. They only released one 45 back at the time (the killer acid-fuzz punker "No se puede ser Superman") and nothing was known about the band...until we tracked them down. We discovered that prior to their 45 release, they recorded a whole album which was never released. Shock's music is underground garage-psychedelia with crude acid-fuzz guitar, effects, English vocals...think of Agua de Regaliz, early Pan & Regaliz, Cerebrum or even obscure Brazilian bands such as Tobruk but with a more primitive sound. The album features ten songs including the original versions of the two tracks later re-recorded for their only 45: "No se puede ser Superman" (titled here "I'm being mad", it's a different and superior English sung version) and "I want to laugh" (a longer version than the one included on the 45). Remastered from the original 2-track tape (which is unfortunately not in perfect condition, but more than good enough). The sound can be described as a mix between a '68 biker movie soundtrack and the signature Scandinavian psychedelic sound. SPARKLES -THE COMPLETE RECORDINGS Texas 60s garage (+7"/CD)-Label:JUKEBOX MUSIC FACTORY The Sparkles were associated with the garage-band and psychedelic rock scene of 1960s Texas, as epitomized by their classic underground hit 'No Friend Of Mine'. The line-up changed few times before 1962, and Stanley Smith finally recruit Harold "Lucky" Floyd (drums and vocals), Donnie Roberts (guitar) and Bobby Smith (bass). Their first recording was the single 'U.T.' under the small label Caron. This third incarnation proved a great hit among the clubs of West Texas, notably the Music Box and The Village Swinger. Indeed, in 2000, local legend Joe Ely described them as the "city's best rock'n'roll band" in the history of the Lubbock music scene published by Texas Monthly. Interestingly, The Sparkles boasted a pair of drummers, with one, the flamboyant Harold Floyd, also lending his voice to their performances. 1966 would constitute a turning point for The Sparkles. Larry Parks -drummer for Roy Orbison, turned producer in Nashville, Tennessee- invited them to sign with Hickory Records, the historic music label founded by Roy Acuff and Fred Rose in 1954. The band came up with 'The Hip', which proved an immediate hit in Austin and extremely popular within the fraternity scene at the University of Texas. On a roll, The Sparkles then recorded 'Something You Said' followed by 'Jack And The Beanstalk'. In 1967, The Sparkles, already a decade old, recorded their chef-d'oeuvre 'No Friend Of Mine', with Nunn's raging guitar riffs and Floyd's remarkably tense vocals. This fiery tour de force would be consecrated by its inclusion on the first CD set of the legendary compilation 'Nuggets: Original Artyfacts From The First Psychedelic Era, 1965-1968'. Following their final single, 'Hipsville 29 B.C.', for Hickory Records, The Sparkles once again entered rocky waters, with Nunn and Holt finally deciding to throw in the towel in 1968. Floyd, Smith and Marriot immediately set sail for California, along the way renaming their group The Pearly Gate. This brief interlude would include a handful of appearances on the ABC sitcom 'Judd, For The Defense'. Legend has it, they were also scheduled to perform before Bobby Kennedy the evening of his tragic assassination on June 5th 1968... Returning to Texas, Floyd, Smith and Marriot resurrected The Sparkles, bringing into the fold Steve Weisberg, future guitarist for John Denver. But Floyd's departure in 1975 for California to join Red Wilder Blue spelled the end of this group's 15-year musical odyssey, a tumultuous journey typical of such modest rock'n'roll heroes posthumously crowned by multiple thematic compilations. THUNDERTREE-ST (70s Mpls killer fuzzed out garage) Label:GUERSSEN Coming from the same Minneapolis '60s scene which spawned bands like The Litter, Thundertree evolved from garage band The Good Idea. In 1970 they released their sole album for the Roulette label: a perfect example of the transition from psychedelia to hard-rock and early progressive sounds. Killer fuzzed out guitar, organ, powerful vocals. Including hard-psych classics like 'In The Morning" or 'Room At The Top Of The Stairs' along with the monstruous 17 minute long '2025' suite. For this, the first ever legit vinyl reissue of Thundertree, the label included two previously unreleased tracks: 'Pepper Palace' (a great psychedelic number) plus a storming cover of 'Sixteen Tons', which was the signature song on Thundertree's live shows. Both tracks were recorded at UA Studios, Minneapolis, in 1970.
