MAGIC SHOPPE - Doppelganger (60s style Byrds influenced)- Label:HYPNOTIC BRIDGE Coincidentally yet appropriately labeling their reverb-heavy sound as “hypnotic,” Magic Shoppe’s single for Hypnotic Bridge leads off with A-side “Doppelgänger,” a song originally titled “Salventius” after the Dutch artist known for his “single-line” drawings of faces. Shelved from an earlier project, the name “Doppelgänger” was actually suggested by Salventius, given it’s a sort of “double” for the original concept for the song. Songwriter and lead guitarist Josiah Webb used three fuzz pedals (with a “fully cocked wah” at the end) with tones turned to pure treble for the fuzz. The ending riff is a nod to Roger McGuinn: highly compressed, clean and with maximum treble, creating a tone that evokes The Byrds’ “Eight Miles High.”Not a reference to San Francisco’s airport but, rather, an acronym for “Skintight Futuristic Outfit,” “S.F.O.” was conceived and tracked in a single session. The band originally intended to play the song quickly, then reverse it completely, possibly adding forward overdubs, but after hearing the results decided to give it more of a “split-brain” dynamic. The first part of the song is played normally, but after some intentional audio degradation (and Vox Cheetah/Fender Twin amp feedback), descends into a total reverse copy of the beginning, with the exception of a forwards vocal overdub. 45 RPM $10 SKU:22188

One of the hardest to find album collectibles there is. This recording also features a very young Lynda Squires (Reign Ghost) and many other Canadian notables of the day. Original cover art is here as well as liner notes. The master came from the band and sounds great, with male/female interplay throughout. Standout cut is 'Believe Me', a folk gem. There’s also a haunting cover of Leonard Cohen’s 'Suzanne' that is right there as well. This project is also related to the 'Rejects' LP, another lost Canadian rarity. CD $10 SKU:15699

DASZU-Zone of Swans/Lucid Actual + 1/2 Dativa(underground post-punk 79-83)- SAALE Label:LION with 8 page insert booklet. Unlike earlier Daszu music, Lucid Actual 2000 was digitally constructed and edited from recordings and generated loops for use in live interactive 3D performances: many of them were performed at a Digital Electronics Festival in Montreal in 1999. The introduction of a visual element into the mathematical minimalist world of Daszu composer Mark Rudolph allowed for a more ambient, repetitive, suggestive—and danceable—style.
These pieces were composed by Daszu creative mastermind Mark Rudolph via listening to combinatoric loops with an occasional long melody or vocal line spinning over time. JESUS FIGUEROA (OPUS ALFA) -Con Todos + Magica Fuente (Uruguay 70s blues psych) Label:RECORD RUNNER Compilation that includes his 1973 & 1974 solo albums as well as an Opus Alfa bonus track taken from their 1971 7" single. Figueroa was the lead singer of Uruguay psych band Opus Alfa, which evolved into Dias de Blues (without him). It was an amicable split, however, and the members of Dias de Blues performed on the first album. Both of the ultra-rare blues influenced psych albums (1973/1974) from Figueroa are on this disc: “Con Todos” has great atmospheric acoustic slide-guitar blues alternating with thudding heavy rocking blues tracks; “Con Todos” is good, but “Magica Fuente” is much more compelling and shows real imagination, with some weird effects and more of a drug vibe; sinuous guitar slow burn blues combined with guitar-propelled rave-ups; there is harp on one track, perhaps foretelling Figueroa’s subsequent search for enlightenment from eastern gurus CD $14 SKU:20220

JONESY- Richochet-Pioneering in 1972-73 (obscure 70s prog)-Label:TRACK RECORDS (UK) Jonesy are the last great secret of the early seventies progressive rock era. A wildly acclaimed British group whose influences vary from Frank Zappa, can, neu, Ian Carr's nucleus and King Crimson, Popol Vuh and the West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band. The original vinyl editions of their three original albums (from which this compilation is drawn) on Pye's specialist Dawn label are expensive collectables. The music has aged well and for once the inflated price tag is entirely justifiable. The group were brilliant musicians, pioneers who were not above creating under the influences of strange substances. The music is very psychedelic and hugely compelling. “Jonesy were an early 70's band in the style of King Crimson but with the unusual element of electric trumpet from Alan Bown. •Available again on CD after more than a decade By this time, anyone with an interest in psychedelia that stretches beyond the Beatles or maybe Strawberry Alarm Clock (at a pinch), knows who July is. Well, at least they know that a band called July put out a super rare album that is considered by many to be one of the pinnacles of the psychedelic era. There's no way to overstate the excellence of the album, with its eerie sound, Indian-influenced chord sequences, studio trickery (tape loops/phasing), and heavily reverb-laden vocals. But that’s not the story we’re here to tell. Even before that quintessential psychedelic album was made, band leader Tom Newman was experimenting with home recording equipment. In 1967, he installed basic recording facilities in the bedroom of his flat in an old Victorian house in Ealing. There, he and guitarist Peter Cook tried out ideas, coming up with many of the standout songs from the July album. The demos they recorded display the kind of confidence that Newman feels was lacking in the album proper (yes, the ultra- famous psychedelic classic album!) that they recorded in 1968. Let’s go back to the near-beginning of it all, to a flat in a Victorian house in Ealing, and listen in on demos recorded with DIY alacrity by a studio whiz, tracks which will change the face of psychedelia, eventually, after decades of obscurity. KAWABATA MAKOTO’S MAINLINER -REVELATION SPACE (Japanese undergound psych legends-Label:RIOT SEASON CD PACKAGED IN A MINATURE VINYL STYLE CARD SLEEVE WITH PRINTED INNER SLEEVE. One of the most celebrated Japanese Underground bands have returned! It may have taken over 12 years, but Kawabata Makoto, guitar guru and head honcho in Acid Mothers Temple, has finally decided to get his celebrated 'psychedelic solid free attack group' back together. Joining original Mainliner members Kawabata Makoto (motorpsycho guitar) and Koji Shimura (drums) is new recruit Kawabe Taigen (bass/vocals) and the trio still kick up one hell of a sonic racket. Confusion surrounds the exact details of the recording, but they seem to date from December 2011, and from Kawabata's mountain top temple studio-cum-home. The man himself, as always, is shying away from sharing too many of the magick details about the Mainliner rebirth. And the stark, minimal black with gold sleeve keeps the mystery intact, apart from the grainy band photo on the rear. All said, 'Revelation Space', is a comeback statement of intent. And it's firmly in the same 'in the red / raw' camp as the original trio's classic 'Mellow Out'. From the initial speaker shaking feedback burst of opener 'Revelation Space', right through to the closing 20-minute epic 'New Sun' (which showcases Taigen's otherworldly howl perfectly) there is no let up in the brutal delivery. This will no doubt delight those Mainliner diehards who never thought they'd see the day again, and all those with a love of over the top guitar howls and punishing feedback levels, but always under pinned by some righteous grooves. KILLERS -Good-Bye (1967 Uruguyan rock)Label:RECORD RUNNER First reissue of one of the main albums from the Uruguyan music scene of the 1960’s/1970’s; within the rock movement in Uruguay in the late sixties, the Killers (Los Killers) were proudly the most professional band in the rock music scene; they started out in 1967, playing cover songs of bands like Bloodrock (or “Bloody Rock” as it says here) on their ultra hi-tech gear; they recorded the Jesus Christ Superstar theme as a single, as well as ‘Woodstock’ for the Discodromo TV show, both included here among the five excellent bonus tracks; then came “Good-Bye”, the band’s one and only LP (Sondor, 1972), on which the Killers sung in English their own compositions, aside from Stephen Stills’ ‘Love the One You’re With’ and ‘Born to Wonder’ by Rare Earth; the Killers were headed for exile in Spain—thus the album’s title—pushed out of Uruguay by the repressive military regime that would take full control of the tiny nation in 1973 and end the careers of most of the bands which stayed behind. This set consists of an LP and a 10-inch with previously unreleased demos, live and studio recordings made between 1979 and 1981, and both come on transparent vinyl in full-colour sleeves and heavy cardboard inner sleeves. CIRCUS - ST 180 gram ( 60s dutch CREAM STYLE ) Label:PSEUDONYM Circus had everything to become the first Dutch super band, along the lines of a.o. Cream and Blind Faith. In January 1968 guitarist and composer Frank Nuyens and drummer/lyricist Jay Baar rose from the ashes of Q65. Herman Brood (Cuby + B) would play piano and Henk Smitskamp (Motions) was approached as bassist/singer. Smitskamp however, chose for After Tea and Brood just did not show up. Mark Klein (James Mean) joined as keyboardist, Frank Verhoef became the bassist/singer. With them, Nuyens and Baar made the first recordings. Later they went into the studio with producer Hans van Hemert, for the complex basis of Mother Motha's Sundance. Although the focus was on instrumental pieces, Circus planned to use a different singer for each song. Hans van Hemert did the "guide-vocal" of Voluntary Peacemaker and Wim Bieler put his teeth in Fairy Tales Of Truth, a long drawn out song full of psychedelia. Circus' groundbreaking sound attracted serious interest from Apple Records, the label of The Beatles. But their recording career never went beyond a test pressing of the single Medusa - recently found in the archives of Hitweek. Since Q65 had split up, but was contractually obliged to deliver one more album, a number of Circus songs landed on the last Q65 LP, 'Revival'. Four decades later Circus presents the original rough working versions, different and sometimes longer than what appeared on 'Revival'. D- MEN - I Wanna Shout 4 page insert (US mid 1960's Garage Rock and Roll.)- Label:BREAKAWAY Take the 14 tunes of this platter, add a band named The D-Men, and you've got a driving, shaking demonstration of US mid 1960's british invasion influenced Garage Rock and Roll. The D-Men are best remembered today for their minor hit success with 45’s such as “I Just Don’t Care” or “So Little Time”. Their biggest success and recognition though, came in 1967 under their new name “The Fifth Estate” when they charted nationwide with their baroque rock adaptation “Ding Dong! The Witch Is Dead”. But it’s the 1964 – 66 recorded tracks on this platter which were first played to the neighbourhood kids and then to wild fans which often brought the house down. Included are “Boom Boom," "Hi Heel Sneakers," and their unreleased demo recording of The Stones "Empty Heart". This punctuates its garage rock beat, with a fuzz ing deep guitar riff and sing ing with the sinister resentment that certifies the track as Nuggets ready. But the band had much more to provide than just cover material. With a gift for writing hooks and catchy melodies a string of excellent originals exposes the hidden side of The D-Men perfectly. "Like I Love You" recaptures the Anglopop charms of the British Invasion, even self-consciously sprinkling Fab Four-isms. "Don't You Know," is a song laced with the organ and guitar interplay ideally suited to take on The Animals, The Searchers, and The Dave Clark Five. More Beatlesque notions are provided in "Love Could Show Me", "I Just Don’t Care" and "Don't You Know," tracks that typify the group's early Merseybeat style. A long lost punk rock gem such as "When I'm Gone" explodes with all the subtlety of The Kingsmen's "Long Green" mugging The Kinks' "Till The End Of The Day," as Paul Revere and The Raiders' "Just Like Me" gets ready to pounce. The outstanding “So Little Time”, earned meager attention beyond the regional market. In truth, it deserves a place among the great, if overlooked, slices of hard-edged East Coast folk rock. All these tracks make up a significant part of the group's legacy. A legacy that will only be complete with such recordings as "It's Cruel," the psychedelic "Night On Fire," and the explosive live recording of "I Wanna Shout".
