MID WEEK BIG SAVINGS!

Tons of serious discounts on some of these items, we’re clearing out the warehouse and making way for the new winter releases. And lots of LAST COPIES listed here, get them while you can. ALSO a batch of warehouse finds listed with the new arrivals.

GOSPELBEACH continues to rule the waves with their new release. We have it here first at BOMP MAILORDER. Here’s an early review:

A cliché perhaps to say it but to my ears it’s the band’s best album thus far, and one with a touch of Zen about it. High and low emotions are felt, then let go in order for the next ones to come. Not a bad way to live let alone make records. Apologies to anyone who’s read this expecting a standard review format. No scrub that, no apologies, this one is for Neal. Thanks for the music and rest easy. HARMONIC DISTORTION

Get all of the GOSPELBEACH/BEECHWOOD SPARKS releases here, including a box set with all of their albums, and a new I LOVE NEAL CASAL bumper sticker.

Check the ALIVE sitefor the latest news and TOUR DATES too. And don't forget the ALIVE playlist, always something new there.

Thanks for all,
Suzy Shaw

THEE MICHELLE GUN ELEPHANT- Rodeo Tandem Beat Specter- PROMO Label:ALIVE The band’s last studio album. “I don't know where the Japanese equivalent of the Motor City is, but Thee Michelle Gun Elephant must be from near there. The quartet's third U.S. album, Rodeo Tandem Beat Specter is a triumph of high-octane, melodic proto-punk in the tradition of the Stooges and the MC5. It's easy to tell on songs like "The Loneliness Of The Citroen" and "My Heart With Its Brakes Broken Loose" that subjects of love and cars are dominant images. The rhythm section of bassist Koji Ueno and drummer Kazuyuki Kuhara provides the horsepower. The flash comes from the soaring bluesy-punk rock lines of guitarist Futoshi Abe. Topped off with singer Yusuke Chiba's gruff, emotional bleats, this is some good ol' foot-stomping, head-shaking stuff.” - Brian J. Bowe / Creem Magazine CD $12 SKU:21700

MYSTERY SHIP - ST - (60s 70s style rock) Label:KNICK KNACK Mystery Ship is a rock and roll band. While that may sound simplistic, the band draws primarily on influences from the 1960s and 1970s, when rock and roll was an open book, still figuring out exactly what it was to become. With a firm grounding in their inspirations and influences, and minds open to putting together sometimes seemingly-unrelated elements, they have developed a sound that is fresh yet familiar, and always energetic. Described by SSG Music as “…what happens when a rock band realizes how awesome 60 s and 70 s rock was and recreates it in modern day… the band doesn’t necessarily sound like any other band out there they do have hints of Mount Carmel, Black Sabbath, and Led Zeppelin.” LP $10 SKU:21699

BROWN SPIRITS -ST)Label:OFF THE HIP Collating a love of Hammond-driven Kraut-laden psych jams, down-tempo beats and elements of atmospheric guitar noise inspired by the Italianlibrary/soundtrack genre. BURNIN RED IVANHOE- LIVE 1970-1974 (leading Danish prog psych band) Label:KARMA MUSIC A collection of live recordings by Danish progressive psych-rock band BUNRIN RED IVANHOE as registered on several occassions and locations during the years 1970-1974. BURNSEER-ST (U.S. garage pop RAmones style)Label:GREEN MONKEY Burnseer is an American rock band based in the Pacific Northwest. Burnseer is Frankie G, guitar and singing, formerly of Rocket Surgery with Jack Endino, Norman Scott on the drums (Skin Yard, Gruntruck, Capping Day) and bassist Eric Norberg. Burnseer is a band that has mass and density. It is Dinosaur Jr vs. The Ramones for 15 rounds. What you may not expect is the NYC pop sensibility that Frankie brings to the band. It is as if PJ Harvey and Patti Smith had a love child. In addition to the core band, the mighty Fastbacks guitarist Kurt Bloch provided additional notes to several songs. Good notes! 'Burnseer' was recorded by Mr. Conrad Uno (Mudhoney, PUSA, millions more) at Egg Studios and subsequently mastered by Mr. Bloch. So whatcha got? Tightly arranged modern Seattle rock that appeals to both garage and pop fans alike, young and old, hell, everybody. This album is contagious and will draw you from the very first song. CD $12 SKU:20952

BWANA- ST(1970 funk/psych rare-groove)Label:ACID SYMPOSIUM (Greece) YIKES! Cover way too controversial to show. Didnt know about it or i might not have ordered it. Google if you want.Reappearance on CD (with tasteless original cover art intact) of fantastic latin funk/psych rare-groove special from around 1970; as latin mavens Dusty Groove say, it’s “an insanely wonderful bit of Latin funk! The groove is super heavy, and falls somewhere in between NuYorican soul and Chicano Power rock—with a sound that's pretty close to Black Sugar, but a little bit more psychedelic, due to the heavy guitars and keyboards in the grooves. Hard congas take the lead on most of the tracks—especially the cut ‘Chapumbambe’, which starts with a nice breakbeat.” We say: astral-planar Latin jams, with blazing guitar and organ, laid down over hot funk/psych grooves; leads off with the eight-minute runaway train 'Tema de Bwana'; what's next, you wonder? why it's the intricate twin-guitar progressive call and response jam of 'La Patada'; the rest gets better from there, with songs that shift and flow until they hit an acid freakout point—check out the end of 'Chapumbambe', or the second half of the thirteen-plus minute soul/psych style rave up 'Lolita' that closes the album. CD $15 SKU:19051

CALLIER,TERRY -Life Lessons: The Best of (Cult 60s soul and jazz singer songwriter DBL -Label:MUSIC CLUB Comprehensive two-CD compilation for this cult Jazz/Soul singer/songwriter. Currently the voice of Massive Attack, Callier’s voyage into the UK charts has been a long one. However the hook-up with Bristol’s finest is just one of a number the Chicago born singer/songwriter has made during a 40-year career working in the fields of Jazz, Folk, Funk and Soul. Callier, a childhood friend of Curtis Mayfield, began recording in 1963 but never reached stardom despite a series of regional hits in the 1960s and 1970s. In 1983, he gained custody of his 12-year-old daughter Sundiata and decided to retire from music to look for a steadier income. He took classes in computer programming and landed a job at the University of Chicago in 1984. He reemerged from obscurity when British DJs discovered his old recordings and began to play his songs in clubs in the late 1980s. “Life Lessons” features tracks drawn from right across his career and represents the most comprehensive overview of his work ever released—twenty four classic single and album tracks, stunning original demo’s and live performances. CD $5 SKU:20303

CANDIDO-Dancin' and Prancin': Expanded Edition (DISCO 1979) Label:BIG BREAK Ooriginally released in 1979 on Salsoul Records at the dizzying peak of the Disco craze. There were four songs on the original album, aimed squarely at the Discos and their glittering lights. “Dancin’ and Prancin’” delivers four dance classics, all of which found a home in discos and clubs across the world, particularly in New York and Philadelphia. 'Jingo' and 'Thousand Finger Man' remain dj favorites and receive club play to this day. The album has a sunny over all feel with some Latin flavor thrown in, as was standard with many Salsoul released in the late 1970’s. This edition has six bonus tracks, which include instrumental versions, 12" extended versions, etc CD $5 SKU:20666

CENTAURS -From Canada to Europe (mid 60s Canadian garage punk)-Label:VINTAGE TRAX The Centaurs were one of the top rock bands to come out of Vancouver Canada in the mid 1960s. With their long hair and bad boy image, they were way ahead of their time in both their sound and style. They left Vancouver seeking fame and fortune and ended up in Holland and Germany where they quickly rose to the top of their game, sharing the stage with some of the biggest groups of the day and gaining thousands of adoring fans. The tracks represented here are high quality studio recordings from 1966 transferred from the original analog master tapes, plus a few live bonus tracks recorded in 1967 in Amsterdam, Holland, just to give the listener a feel of the period from the band's own perspective. Fans of '60s garage/punk music will greatly appreciate these never before released tracks, remastered by award winning mastering engineer Stephen Marsh in Los Angeles CD $15 SKU:20911

HANUMAN- ST (1971 German prog Krautrock)180 GRAM Label:MISSING VINYL The label says: “Hanuman was a post MURPHY BLEND, that recorded this excellent German progressive Krautrock album on the KUCKUCK label in 1971. The lyrics are strongly politically and socially engaged, while it is musically very similar to the first two OUT OF FOCUS albums, but more lyrical. This album, is a perfect example of the early 70s German progressive Krautrock scene and should be part of every serious 70s progressive rock collection. Limited edition, deluxe 180g vinyl, exact reproduction of the original first pressing. Classic German Krautrock album from 1971. Post Murphy Blend outfit. Fully authorized. Limited, deluxe exact reissue on 180g vinyl. Expertly remastered from the mastertapes. First ever exact reissue.” Additional information from the Lion Productions archives: Berlin band formed by Murphy Blend organist Wolf-Rüdiger Uhlig in May 1971 at a festival in Munich, along with a trio of jazz and blues musicians. Hanuman took the Murphy Blend sound, sans the classical style, and developed a sound that hinted at that of Out Of Focus, although with a more lyrical and offbeat sensibility. Without Uhlig, who left after this album, Hanuman metamorphosized into Lied Des Teufels LP $16 SKU:20930

ILIAS ASVESTOPOULOS & 2002 --O Siderenios Anthropos -The Iron Man( Great Greek psych/prog 1974)-Label:APS NOVA (Greece) Ilias Asvestopoulos was a previous member of the garage band Persons (with members of the legendary Socrates) playing mostly covers of known hits (i.e. 96 Tears). He founded 2002 in 1974 (!), and together they recorded two albums. It’s the second LP, "O Siderenios Anthropos" (The Iron Man) that gets people excited. It’s an essential gem with great guitar /organ work. Not a stoned psych jam album here, but a very enjoyable psych/prog LP typical of the period—but really ahead of it's time for the just "out of the junta" Greek reality of this partciular period of history. A mega-limited numbered edition of 250 copies LP $19 SKU:20960

JANDEK- Follow Your Footsteps ( 1986 loner) Label:CORWOOD VG+ cover, Mint vinyl. Jandek, alone with a guitar and a microphone, sounds like a muttering sleepwalker aimlessly plucking amplified bicycle spokes. His music is dark and gloomy; but it won't make you sad-it will make you tense and uncomfortable. Here is the Ultimate Disconnect. You love it or hate it-and for every one of the former, there are one million of the latter. A sampling of his song titles: "Painted My Teeth," "Twelve Minutes Since February 32'nd" [sic], and "Janitor's Dead." Jandek accompanies himself on acoustic or electric guitar, but for the incoherence of his zombie-like strumming, his hands might as well be accidentally brushing against the strings. His occasional wheezing harmonica approximates early Dylan having an asthma attack. Sometimes Jandek is backed by a drummer who seems unfamiliar with the kit, and who pounds away relentlessly with no ground beat.If the above seems too flattering a portrait of Jandek's cave-dweller primitivism, imagine a subterranean microphone wired down to a month-old tomb, capturing the sound of maggots nibbling on a decaying corpse and the agonized howls of a departed soul desperate to escape tortuous decomposition and eternal boredom. That's Burt Bacharach compared to Jandek.
Jandek is a recluse named Sterling R. Smith, and he's holed up somewhere near Houston, Texas. (Please don't call the one in the Houston phone book-wrong guy.) Since 1978 Smith has issued, mostly on 12" vinyl, 28 full-length albums-no 7" or 12" singles, no remixes, cassettes, or videos. A few of his cryptic album titles: Staring at the Cellophane, Telegraph Melts, Blue Corpse, Chair Beside a Window. He didn't begin issuing CDs until the early 1990s. His album covers are devoid of any information. He has never issued a press kit, and never performed in public. He rejects all requests for interviews. They found the Unabomber, but so far, no Jandek. Seth Tisue, curator of a Jandek website, notes, "His consistency in this regard far surpasses that of other legendary reclusives such as Thomas Pynchon and J.D. Salinger." Jandek's records rarely turn up in stores-even second-hand shops. LP $50 SKU:21198

CAL - Homegrown (60s/70s influenced psych hard-rock) -Label:OUT-SIDER Totally under the radar US private pressing from 1982. 60s/70s influenced psychedelic hard-rock full of distorted guitar and freaky synths with some mellowed-out folky moments. File next to other psych misfits such like T Kail, D.R. Hooker, Marcus, Michael Angelo…Cal - also known as “Cal Rock&Roll” - was a band formed in the mid-70s in New York by some veteran musicians from the club scene: Larry Calabrese on guitar & vocals, Andy Barone on bass, Jerry Joly on drums / vocals and Jeffrey Gaer on keyboards. Famous for their powerful live shows – one of their stellar moments was opening for Leslie West & Mountain - , Cal secured a faithful fan base, especially among the biker crowd.
“Homegrown” was released in 1982 in a edition of 2000 copies, most of which were discarded due to pressing faults. Also, the album mastered at lower speed. Soon after, Larry met Todd Rundgren at a recording studio and he expressed interest in the band and some of their songs. Famous record label Sugarhill were also interested in adding Cal to their roster but nothing came of it in the end. So “Homegrown” vanished into obscurity until some original copies were discovered by psych dealers and collectors in the 90s.

CEM KARACA -Kardaslar 1974 (TURKISH ROCK PIONEER 1960s and 70s) Label:GUERSSEN Sophisticated & passionate, with flamboyant taste in sunglasses, Cem Karaca once led Istanbul’s music fans through a period of violent political turmoil. Karaca reworked traditional folk lyrics with molten electric bass lines that played up both a poet’s broiling righteousness and also his listeners’ common ground with their elders in Turkey’s history. This is the second album from Karaca, released in 1974. It leads the listener through Karaca’s own musical history, skipping across various collaborations and bands up to his then-current project Dervi an. Can throbbing Anatolian guitars take on the assassins of the Grey Wolves? Imagine a hairy pied piper with R Kelly’s flair for drama, wailing into a microphone over an electric ba lama, and you’re ready to enter the bohemian world of Papa Cem. GABBARD, ANDY - Fluff - LTD ed of 150 PINK VINYL (BUFFALO KILLERS- Modern Grunge Fuzz Pop with 60’s aura ) -Label:ALIVE Brimming with creativity, Fluff by Andy Gabbard, his debut release as a solo artist on Alive Naturalsound, isn't moving beyond what Andy has done, or will continue to do with Buffalo Killers. Sometimes, ultimately, you find yourself with extra moments and more ideas than one band can develop. So naturally, it made perfect sense to give that inward creative need an outlet. Fluff is the end result.Cut in one 12-hour studio session, Andy took on the full responsibility of doing a solo album literally. He played every instrument and wrote everything you hear. Reviving an established relationship with Alive Records, on Fluff you can hear the deeply-solid effects of the grunge genre and mid-'90s 'alternative music' in a sonic gestalt. Exhibiting characteristics of fairly recent genres, as well as some classics that surrounded him during his youth, Fluff breaks barriers of seemingly comfortable, unthreatening music cultivating a physical embodiment of Nirvana, The Smashing Pumpkins, latter Beatles and even Brian Wilson!
Fluff defines Andy's environment, a creative environment... an environment of ultra-dimensional levels. The days of solo albums being released due to further 'artistic development' past a bands catalog of hits, are over. Buffalo Killers continue their successful run and now, it's not running alone. Fluff is the start of something great and fathers the true sonic beauty and the relative nature of one single person and their soundtrack of nearly unending smiles in a sea of tumultuous frowns. - Shawn Abnoxious LP $10 SKU:16540

GRAVEDIGGER V - All Black & Hairy (60 PEBBLES style Classic cave garage) BLUE Label:VOXX The one proper album the band released in its lifetime, All Black and Hairy is both perfectly named and perfectly performed -- if it's nothing but a re - All Black & Hairy LTD ED of 150 CLEAR BLUE VINYL! (60 style Classic cave garage ) -vivalist approach at heart, it's such a damn entertaining one that there's no cause for complaint. With its title track taken from the appropriately goonball back catalog of Screamin' Lord Sutch and its general snot-mouthed attitude from every last Nuggets and Pebbles selection ever, about the only thing missing are the lava lamps and garage stink. Saying the band uses the right combination of fuzztone guitars and echo and heavy frug rhythms is a bit like saying the sky is blue -- it's just one of those things to be expected -- but the sheer energy and abandon present keep everything from simply retracing the past to no point. Leighton's credit is for "lead screaming," and that about sums it up -- he's not so much singing as pulling off the ultimate teen-wannabe-Mick Jagger performance, only even more aggressively snotty. Ted Friedman's lead guitar solos with the right rave-up spirit and John Hanrattie keeps the core melodies going, while the Tom Ward/David Anderson rhythm section aims to get rears shaking instead of sitting. The album is half split between inspired originals (check out the concluding "Stoneage Stomp") and actual songs from the time, the latter resulting in fun versions of tracks like the Uncalled For's "Do Like Me" and Larry & the Bluenotes' "Night of the Phantom." About the only thing missing is the original studio recording of the band's best number, "It's Spooky," but anyone wanting a quick blast of '60s punk thrills filtered through later years could do much worse than to dig this one up. GREYLOCK MANSION-ST (underground PSYCH 68 w 3 inserts) Label:Lysergic Sound Another buried treasure of pure underground psychedelia: GREYLOCK MANSION, who emerged loudly from Tucson, Arizona in 1968. The band's sound (as heard on the opening track of LSD's best-selling "St. Albert's Dream" compilation) is powerful, deep underground psych with thick, dominant funereal organ and distorted fuzz guitar and effects, backed by heavy precise drumming. The Doors and Iron Butterfly influences are evident, and a touch of early Black Sabbath’s slow grinding sludge rears its head at times. •A true masterpiece of 60’s U.S. underground psychedelic rock, finally re-issued LP $22 SKU:17972

HACIENDA - Big Red and Barbacoa (prod by Dan of the Black Keys ) (YELLOW VINYL ltd ed last copies ) Label:ALIVE BIG RED & BARBACOA is the second album by South Texas' HACIENDA, and like its predecessor Loud Is The Night (Alive 2008), it was produced by Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys. Recorded on the tail-end of a year playing clubs and festivals across North America, Australia and Europe (opening for Dan Auerbach and Dr. Dog, and more recently for Alberta Cross), this new album brings heavier grooves and flavor to the '60s harmonies sound the band is known for. The result is a blend of Tex-Mex roots rock, retro-pop and R&B that can only be described as South Texas Soul. BIG RED & BARBACOA captures the attitude of a band ready to throw pretension to the roadside and play rock'n'roll the way it was intended.

HANDSOME JACK -Everything's Gonna Be Alright (70s style blues fused rock and roll LtD ED STARBURST Label:ALIVE Here's what the media had to say about Handsome Jack's last album Do What Comes Naturally :This record is probably more fun than the first Black Crowes record—which from an influence/aesthetics standpoint, it oddly evokes—and were it to bear a Harvest Records imprint and a 1970 copyright date, no one would bat an eye. Which must mean it’s really good. – ROLLING STONENo pretense, no skinny pants, no Swatches to be seen. This is your dad’s rock and roll. And your dad was cooler than you. – GLORIOUS NOISEThis record rules. It’s an album for people who want stanky, swampy, dirty boogie. This one’s a keeper; trust us. You want standout tracks? Try all of ‘em. – PERFORMER MAGAZINEHandsome Jack are mining a tradition, and Do What Comes Naturally digs solid ore from a deep vein… a celebration of laid-back but serious partying, and it'll make a fine soundtrack for your next celebration of the boogie. – ALL MUSICRecalls greasy '70s stoner stuff — Allman Brothers et al. – MILWAUKEE JOURNAL-SENTINELThe music of this album seamlessly flows through deep dark mid-tempo boogies, smoky upbeat burners and soulful feel-good rockers all with a natural ease… damn catchy. – GLIDE MAGAZINE Handsome Jack's music resonates with the atmospheres of rock's great ballrooms - the Avalon, Fillmore, Winterland, Agora, Grande - and the bands who rocked them. They call their music ‘boogie soul,’ but the boogie gave birth to rock and their souls are plugged into an extension cord that stretches from Buffalo to the Delta. – NO DEPRESSION LP $20 SKU:20238

HAUNTED - Blow my Little Mind to Bits -LAST COPIES of great 60s garage-Label:VOXX LAST COPIES One of Canada's most popular homegrown rock groups in the '60s, though they made no inroads to the rest of North America. From the English-speaking community of Montreal, the group was very explicit in their desire to emulate the Rolling Stones, and most of their 1966-1968 singles (as well as their sole LP, from 1967) were in a raunchy R&B/blues-rock style. Their most successful single, "1-2-5," gained fame when it was reissued on one of the first Pebbles compilations of garage singles in the '70s. All of their material was reissued in the '80s. LP $15 SKU:8001

HEAD -ST ( Obscure 60s style psych Creem, Led Zep style ) last copies - Label:VOXX Unfairly, this album has always remained obscure, even among Voxx releases. Perhaps this is due to their style, which is freeform and creative, rather than the formulaic approach audiences seem to prefer. With influences ranging from Cream to Led Zep to little-known British bands like July, Head blew a lot of minds in Los Angeles in the early '90s with their light show and extended trip-jams. For their album debut, they chose a different approach: using all the studio tricks at their command to make a finely-crafted collage of sounds designed to flow through a listener's most spaced-out headphone session. But this long album also includes most of their live freakout favorites, and there are frequent moments of sublime ensemble playing. [12/92] Greg Shaw LP $15 SKU:2295

HIBUSHIBIRE - TURN ON, TUNE IN, FREAK OUT! (JAPANESE PSYCH )Label:RIOT SEASON It would be fair to say Hibushibire's 2017 debut album 'Freak Out Orgasm!' went down well with fans of psych-rock (call it what you will). So far its had three vinyl pressings, two cassette pressings and a CD run back in Japan. Once again their second album is produced by Makoto Kawabata (Acid Mothers Temple, Mainliner) and it's the next logical step in the band's sonic development. As with its predecessor, side one consists of three tracks, 'Ecstasy Highwaystar', 'Blow! Blow! Blow!' and 'Overdose, Pussycat! More! More!'. Some of these titles will be familiar if you've followed the band's live shows in recent times, and it's pretty much a guitar to the front, full gonzo-style hard-rocking psychedelic freak out from the first blast of Changchang's guitar panning from left to right before the main riff kicks it all off. Again, as with their debut, side two comprises of just one epic length track. 'Rollercoaster Of The Universe' clocks in at seventeen minutes and is the sound of the band moving onto the next level during its journey. It's a shudderingly beautiful piece, with many hypnotic twists and turns. LP $22 SKU:21256

HOLLIS BROWN GETS LOADED By Bill Bentley, Columnist
June 30, 2014

Hollis Brown, Gets Loaded. Defying the odds of gravity and greatness, the Brooklyn-based Hollis Brown band records all the songs on one of the perfect rock albums, Velvet Underground’s Loaded, and still manages to hold their head high. So what may have looked like a long shot on the assembly line turns into an inspired piece of music-making. When the Velvets’ fourth (and last) studio album was released in 1970, it finally looked like the ultra-boundary-breaking New York outfit would get their due. Except for one small problem: the Velvet Underground had already broken up. So soon-to-be classic Lou Reed songs “Sweet Jane,” “Rock and Roll,” “New Age” and others were left in the cold light of winter to die, only to live now and see another day.

Now that Hollis Brown has decided to do their own take of the entire album, it’s clear this is rock that has never been surpassed. By anyone. As much as what Hollis Brown has accomplished by putting their own life into these ten songs, it is also a mighty display of courage to even attempt such a thing, proving that lives are still being saved by rock and roll — and Lou Reed.

RIDE ON THE TRAIN
BY Greg Jones
Ride on the Train is an album that a lot of people are going to love for its multi-generational appeal. But besides that, it’s just good rock music. It’s hard to peg a specific sound on it. There are no “skip” songs on this album though. Be prepared to keep it in your player, on repeat, for a long time. Oh, and the next time one of your friends says “they just don’t make music like they used to,” you slap them and hand them this album. But make sure you slap them first, for dramatic effect.

Hollis Brown have a classic sound that is sure to satisfy a variety of music fans. There’s a certain timeless element to their sound that will have typical “classic rock” fans happy. But what they also have going for them is a refreshing newness. They sound like a band that you’ve heard before, but odds are you haven’t. That’s because Hollis Brown reflect some of the greatest bands in rock music from Tom Petty to The Eagles to Lynrd Skynrd.

Hollis Brown’s “Down on Your Luck” sounds like it could have come straight out of 1966. It makes the listener feel like that “cold wind blowin’” is out the windows of an old Camaro or Mustang. “When the night runs cold and you’re down on your luck…” highlights the theme of the songwriter being available to help. But really what makes this song so good isn’t lyrical complexity, but rather a Creedence kind of joy. If you played this at a party and told the crowd it was a lost Creedence reel, you wouldn’t get much criticism. LP $16 SKU:16288

HOLLIS BROWN -CLUSTER OF PEARLS(akin to blues-based Southern rock and pure British Invasion-influenced pop -LEMON VINYL Label:ALIVE Limited edition pressed on LEMON Vinyl! Showing great range, from Bo Diddley backbeat to the stylized Soul of Hall & Oates, HOLLIS BROWN is an American Roots music band from New York City that rocks. The opening track “Completed Fool” busts the record open with a wicked bass line and introduces us to just one facet of lead singer Mike Montali‘s jewel-solid vocals. On Cluster Of Pearls the more jangly indie guitar of their past efforts is moved to the back of the mix and lead guitarist John Bonilla‘s growling lead takes control. It wasn’t until later tracks that I was “completely fooled” as they say, but the bands fusion of soul/rock/and alt-country sounds has come to fruition over their last three albums and is on full display here.“Don’t Want To Miss You” moves into a Memphismeets Muscle Shoals style sound that relies heavily on reverb and crying style vocals. It’s clear these guys are listening to the good stuff (Otis Redding, Eddie Hinton, et. al) and that listening is finding it’s way into the music. “Hey Baby” rolls into the album like a train going by, pinched notes squawk a riff, a rimshot drum beat skitters around some low end bass work and Montali howls “Hey Baby, make me blue, I want to make sweet love to you / Hey mama shine your light I kinda want you to treat me right” as Bonilla’s guitar takes off into face scrunching solo territory. HYPSTRZ - Hypstrization (Incendiary '70s punk-era performances of '60s garage classics) BLUE VINYL Label:BOMP Records The 1980 garage/soul gem by this legendary Minneapolis outfit, originally released on Voxx and out of print for decades. Entirely remastered from the original master tapes, restored to its original artwork, and lovingly pressed on clear blue vinyl.

REVIEW:
It's ironic that '60s revivalist bands often produce records that are as rare and difficult to find as the records from which their material is sourced. Such is the case for this Midwest band's fantastic 1980 Bomp LP, "Hypstrization!" Despite the backing from Bomp, the album went unnoticed by many ardent garage rock fans, only to attain a level of cult desirability among collectors in later years. The band themselves were an anachronism, reviving mid-60s garage rock in the teeth of late-70s punk, thrilling and confounding audiences in fraternal halls, local ballrooms and bowling alleys throughout the upper Midwest. What made it work, and what comes across so clearly on these live recordings, is that the group was fully committed to the sounds they produced, and the fuel of fellow punk bands (both local like The Suicide Commandos, and god-like, such as The Ramones) made their snarling, thrashing garage rock a lot more than a pose.

Bomp's original LP is included in full as this CD's opening 15 tracks. It's a sweaty evening of garage rock classics - whether or not they were garage rock in the first place. In addition to mid-60s punk anthems like "Riot on Sunset Strip," "Talk Talk" and "96 Tears," the band revs up the soul side "In the Midnight Hour" and "I Go Crazy," and takes The Small Faces' "All or Nothing" out for a heartfelt spin. The non-stop assault, punctuated by occasional song count-offs, follows the performance template the band picked up from The Ramones, as does their combination of hammering guitars topped with melodic vocals.

This reissue expands upon the original LP with 18 additional live selections from the same pair of nights at Jay's Longhorn. These extra tracks include more garage-ified soul/funk tunes ("Hold on I'm Coming" "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag"), Nuggets/Pebbles standards ("Action Woman" "Sometimes Good Guys Don't Wear White"), well-picked British Invasion winners ("Come See Me" "66-5-4-3-2-1" and "I'm Not Talking"), rockabilly rave-ups (Eddie Cochran's "C'mon Everybody"), and some '60s chart oddities (Sgt. Barry Sandler's "Ballad of the Green Berets" and The Shangri-Las "Remember (Walking in the Sand"). Closing out the collection is a trio of live tracks waxed in 2004 (including a stomping of The Sonics' "The Witch"), proving that the band rocks just as frenetically now as they did twenty-five years ago. This is a must have for garage rock fans, original or neo.- hyperbolium LP $15 SKU:11922

IHRE KINDER-Empty Hands (“Leere Hände”,English version) 1968 German prog psych) Label:MISSING VINYL Ihre Kinder, formed in 1968, and were the pioneers among the politically and socially engaged groups in Germany. Their second album Leere Hände was originally released on the legendary KUCKUCK label in 1970. The English version, called Empty Hands, has never been available on vinyl. There was a small number of white label copies pressed by Deutsche Grammophon in 1970/71 to solicit releases by Polyram companies around the world, but as there was no interest, the label dropped the idea. So, now it is the first time ever, that the English version of Leere Hände is being pressed on vinyl, with the original Kuckuck label and number, the original track-listing order and the cover as it would have been adjusted for the English version. A great German progressive psychedelic effort, which sounds different and familiarly great in English, that should be part of every serious 70s progressive rock collection.
