NEW ARRIVALS

ALEXANDRIA,LOREZ -For Swingers Only (1963 soul drenched)Label:DUSTY GROOVE Darkly brilliant vocals from the legendary Lorez Alexandria, heard here in a rare small combo session recorded in 1963 for Chess Records. Although the group is a small one, they make this album one of the boldest, most soul-drenched albums Alexandria ever cut. The title really gets it right, as there’s a subtle swing to most of the tunes, even the ballads, and a way of hitting the rhythms that’s quite different than on the average jazz vocal album—it truly highlights the genius of Alexandria’s sound. Instrumentation includes flute and tenor sax, plus piano from John Young; nice use of guitar which really helps further the grooviness of the set. CD $15 SKU:20744

ALLAN HOLDSWORTH- I.O.U - Live in JAPAN Label:MANIFESTO PROMO UNSEALED Archive copy previously owned by either the owner of ALIVE or BOMP CD $5 SKU:20774

CEM KARACA -Apa lar, Karda lar, Mo ollar, Ferdy Klein Orkestrası 1974 (TURKISH ROCK PIONEER 1960s and 70s) Label:PHARAWAY Sophisticated & passionate, with flamboyant taste in sunglasses, Cem Karaca once led Istanbul’s music fans through a period of violent political turmoil. Karaca reworked traditional folk lyrics with molten electric bass lines that played up both a poet’s broiling righteousness and also his listeners’ common ground with their elders in Turkey’s history. This is the second album from Karaca, released in 1974. It leads the listener through Karaca’s own musical history, skipping across various collaborations and bands up to his then-current project Dervi an. Can throbbing Anatolian guitars take on the assassins of the Grey Wolves? Imagine a hairy pied piper with R Kelly’s flair for drama, wailing into a microphone over an electric ba lama, and you’re ready to enter the bohemian world of Papa Cem. Remastered sound (sounding much better than the original pressing), insert with detailed liner note LP $17 SKU:20752

COLTRANE, JOHN - STANDARD COLTRANE -Label:PRESTIGE SEALED LP $10 SKU:20771

CWT -Hundredweight (1973 Brit heavy rock)Label:OHRWASCHL RECORDS/KUCKUCK (Germany) The only album from this English heavy rock trio, released on Kuckuck in 1973—one of the heaviest acts on the label. CWT Guest musician Cy Payne is responsible for the brass arrangements, which gives CWT a very special sound; apart from the fantastic guitar and vocal work of Graham Jones, the brass section gives CWT a Motown Soul touch, a real heavy groove. All in all, it makes "The Hundredweight" an interesting album with some faster and softer points. Tracks like ‘Steam Roller’ are devastating, filled with the hardest riffing and rough vocals. It might be accurate to compare CWT with bands like Sir Lord Baltimore or Cactus: they are of a same class, so to speak, and all liked their basic heavy blues rock CD $14 SKU:20747

Envelopes of Yesterday-The Manticore Records Anthology 1973-1976-Label:ESOTERIC Manticore Records was the legendary imprint established by Emerson, Lake & Palmer in 1973 for the purposes of releasing new ELP related material, but also to promote the work of artists admired by the band. Manticore also served as the home for the classic ELP albums 'Brain Salad Surgery' and 'Welcome Back My Friends to the Show That Never Ends' and solo hit singles by Greg Lake and Keith Emerson.Envelopes of Yesterday tells the musical story of Manticore Records and features a selection of some of the finest music released by the label, including seven tracks by Emerson Lake & Palmer, Greg Lake & Keith Emerson. Also features a couple tracks more into psych-pop, all pretty well executed. Fully licensed, 180g vinyl with mastertape sound quality, original gatefold cover artwork. 500 copies only pressingLP $17 SKU:20753

LIBERMAN,JEFF -Solitude Within (heavy psych guitar/west coast/acid rock) -Label:OUT-SIDER (Spain) Out-Sider present the first vinyl reissue of Jeffery Liberman's Solitude Within, originally released in 1975. Chicago born Jeff Liberman was a guitar player in the best tradition of '70s guitar Gods like Hendrix, Trower, Clapton or Zappa. His music is the perfect mix between virtuosity and feeling, with a gift for brilliant songwriting. Between 1975 and 1978, Liberman self-released three albums on his own Librah label which were some of the first private pressings to gain recognition amongst psych collectors in the '80s. Solitude Within, his second album, is a heavy psych guitar/west coast/acid rock classic with plenty of acid soloing drenched in fuzz-wah with treated vocals, effects, hard-blues and even some cool mellow folk grooves and experimental excursions. RIYL: Bob Smith, Terry Brooks, Robin Trower, Hendrix, D.R. Hooker, Bevis Frond. LIED DES TEUFELS- ST (1973 German rock) Label:OHRWASCHL RECORDS/KUCKUCK (Germany) Part of a string of projects that lead from the famed Murphy Blend to Hanuman to here, as this is Hanuman without Wolf-Rüdiger Uhlig, who had brought them together. After Hanuman leader Wolf-Rüdiger Uhlig left the band, the remaining musicians renamed themselves after the closing track on the Hanuman album. Lied Des Teufels (in English "Song of the Devil") made a much more aggressive politico-German rock on this their 1973 Kuckuck label album, stylistically between Out Of Focus, Floh De Cologne and Ton Steine Scherben CD $14 SKU:20748

LIGHTDREAMS -Islands In Space (70s psych ACID ARCHIVES FAVE)Label:Got Kinda Lost Records “…we can make [enough] progress inside our heads and the heads of our friends to lay the foundations of an intergalactic life more meaningful than our earthbound condition…” – John Peel, International Times. Mirroring the sentiment of the prescient UK radio legend in his Vibrations column for the International Times in the ‘70s, LightDreams leader Paul Marcano took one further step beyond his intimate colleagues and chose to spread his ideals concerning peaceful outer space colonization to all with open ears. Islands In Space, dotted with acoustic jams, backwards guitars, lyrics alluding to the British progressive era, smoking hot electric leads, synths galore, and the dreamiest of melodies, is both Marcano’s love letter to the work of science-fiction author Gerard K. O’Neill and the psych-tinged folk explorers who came before him such as McDonald & Giles. Originally privately-issued in 1981 in an edition of 1,000 copies, Islands In Space explores space travel and cosmic ideology making for a sci-fi psych odyssey and is filled with atmospheric, lysergic creations atop a hybrid of sounds from the cosmic-psych/progressive-folk/new age spectrum. Home-recorded (yet hi-fi), Islands In Space carries a singular quality, defies easy categorization and has long been savored over by collectors of otherworldly joys. Got Kinda Lost Records is absolutely ecstatic to allow this singular, beatific work another chance to shine from Earth’s surface to the outer reaches of the galaxy. RIYL: Dreamies, Donovan, Pete Fine, Robert Lester Folsom’s hazy, synth-led moments, McDonald & Giles, Ramases, Simones, and the out-of-time bliss of Bobb Trimble, et al. “The album’s free floating dreaminess is grounded in solid songwriting and impressive arrangements, [making Islands In Space] one of the better albums from the era; consistent, talented and transporting in a friendly psychedelic way.” – Patrick “The Lama” Lundborg (The Acid Archives LP $17 SKU:17292

LITTLE FREE ROCK- Nirvanating Nervesounds w insert and liners(1969 heavy PSYCH rock) - Label:SOMMOR Psychedelic hard-rock featuring the explosive fuzz-wah guitar of Peter Illingworth. Little Free Rock were an underground British power-trio which evolved from heavy-mod-psych band Purple Haze. In 1969, the band released their only album for the Transatlantic label. “Nirvanating Nervesounds” collects previously unreleased sessions for an aborted Little Free Rock second album from 1971, produced by Robert Stigwood, plus tracks from their early incarnation as Purple Haze, taken from an ultra-rare demo acetate from 1969. The ’71 tracks were recorded when the band had just incorporated an African percussionist to their line-up, “Lord” Eric Carboo; also, ex-Killing Floor bass player John Taylor had replaced original member Frank Newbold. This new line-up shines on tracks like the terrific psych-funk sounding “Money On Your Mind”, full of drum breaks and frenzied wah-wah guitar. The 1969 recordings are taken from the only known copy of a demo acetate recorded in 1969, when the band had just changed their name from Purple Haze to Little Free Rock. Featuring some songs which were later re-recorded and included on the Little Free Rock Transatlantic album but appearing here in a superior, raw-sounding form. For many people, the recordings included here are the best thing Little Free Rock ever did and show how their first album should’ve really sounded. Most of these tracks were previously released on CD under the “Time is of no consequence” name but they appear here in a newly remastered, superior sounding form, most noticeable on the acetate tracks (no surface noise here this time!). Remastered sound. Four-page insert with detailed liner notes by Nigel Cross (Shagrat Records) and Klemen Breznikar (It’s Psychedelic Baby) plus rare photos LP $17 SKU:16713

MACARTHUR - ST (1979 U.S basement private pressing) ONE ONLY Label:OUT SIDER U.S basement psych-prog monster released in 1979 as an ultra-rare private pressing of 200 copies. MacArthur were formed when a young guitar player and songwriter named Ben MacArthur met a 17-yeard old prodigy musician called Bill Heffelfinger in Saginaw, Michigan, in 1978. Bill was not only a gifted guitar player but also a genius arranger and keyboard wizard. When Ben showed him some of the stuff he had written, Bill took the songs and transformed them into classic pieces of music. They soon recruited Jeff Bauer on bass and Scott Stockford on drums. The chemistry of MacArthur was born. The first MacArthur album, known in collector’s circles as “The Black Forest” due to the vinyl bootleg of the same title released in the 80s, was recorded in 1979 using a four-track machine. Produced by Bill Heffelfinger, “MacArthur” is a progressive / psychedelic concept album highlighted by devastating, ripping fuzz guitar solos and Mini-Moog / synths attacks. Due to the lack of funds, the album was originally issued by the band in a primitive hand-made sleeve with just a sticker on front and a paper sheet with the credits glued on back. For this, the first ever legit reissue, we’ve done a printed sleeve with embossed letters on front, as the band originally intended. Note: CD comes in standard jewelcase without embossed cover. First ever legit vinyl reissue with original artwork. Insert with liner notes and photos. “Adventurous sweeping synth prog with guitar bursts featuring Ben MacArthur, very spacey with long tracks and echoed vocals” — (Acid Archives) LP $17 SKU:17541

MARTIN,PAUL -It Happened (1966-67 garage anthems, jangly folk-rock)-Label:OUT-SIDER 1966-67 garage anthems, jangly folk-rock and baroque pop courtesy of prolific songwriter Paul Myerberg aka Paul Martin. “There a new man in town – Martin!” So began the liner notes from the picture sleeve of his second 45 record in 1967. Actually, Paul Martin started life as Paul Myerberg. Growing up in Manhattan, Paul was influenced by the exciting music of the day, like the Rolling Stones and Bob Dylan. In the mid-Sixties Paul started writing and recording some impressive demos which ran the gamut from garage-punk, to jangly folk-rock, soul-pop and baroque, orchestrated pop. Many of these were cut on 4-track tape at Tower Sound Studios in midtown Manhattan with the help and guidance of the skilled jazz musician, Frank Owens. While at Tower, Paul met Herb Ostrow who released Paul’s first single on the IMPEX label out of Philadelphia. “It Happened”, a terrific garage number, came out in the spring of 1966. The following year, Paul released a second 45 on his own Rodin label, “The Last Remains of our Love” (another impressive, passionate garage gem), backed with “The Fairy Princess” (a dreamy pop-psych track). Almost 30 years later Paul’s first album was released on the Distortions Records label, compiling tracks from his two sought-after singles plus studio demos and acetates. For many people, this was the first introduction to the music of Paul Martin, the man with a Brill Building inside his head. Now, we present a revamped version of that compilation, featuring new artwork, newly remastered sound, insert with rare photos / liner notes and one previously unreleased track from 1967. “An Aladdin's Cave of well-crafted garage pop” - Robert Cochrane (CultureCatch LP $17 SKU:20756

MIRLOS,LOS -Cumbia Amazon (Compilation with their best tracks from 1972 to 1980) -Label:PHARAWAY After the celebrated “Cumbias Chichadélicas” compilation, we present our second collaboration with the legendary Infopesa label from Peru. Los Mirlos were one of the most celebrated Peruvian Cumbia bands who recorded for the famous “orange” label. Featuring the incredible electric guitar of Gilberto Reátegui, Los Mirlos released a total of seven LPs for Infopesa. Spanning 1972- 1980, Cumbia Amazónica features all of their classics like ‘El Sonido de Los Mirlos’, ‘Sonido Amazónico’, ‘Poder Verde’ and more. Real Amazonian cumbia / chicha sounds straight from the jungle, full of surf, echo & reverb drenched electric guitars, cheap keyboards, exotic percussion and effects. Master tape sound, insert with liner notes and photos LP $17 SKU:20757

MOTHS- ST ( UK underground hippie acid-folk 1970)LAST ONE -Label:GUERSSEN RECORDS (SPAIN) UK underground hippie acid-folk from 1970, originally released as a micro-pressing of less than 30 copies on the collectable Deroy custom label. Mellow atmosphere with acoustic guitars, flute, bongos, bass and refreshing, sincere vocals. A few self-penned tracks plus some amazing & haunting covers of people like Incredible String Band, David Ackles, Dylan, Tim Buckley, Bert Jansch. Rated with the maximum rarity on Hans Pokora’s “3001 Record Collecting Dreams”. Remastered sound, insert with liner notes and photos. New cover design (the original album came in a plain white sleeve). “…Enchanting atmosphere and fragrant mellow vibes. Soft vocals, vivid earthy use of bongoes, and haunting flutes possess the LP in its entirety. The vocals throughout are subdued, laid-back beyond mellow...folk lost in a sleepy haze, for the beach on a warm summer's night...comforting diffused light hazily pulls the listener into dreamscapes where flutes softly cut swathes through mists with doleful but captivating sounds, crystalline clarity of sound...One of the rarest, obscurest UK releases” – Stephen Smith (Progressive Music) LP $ SKU:16280

MOUSE - LADY KILLER (1976 hard rock/psych/blues) Label:SOMMER Led by legendary prog-fusion / session guitarist Ray Russell (John Barry Seven, Graham Bond, Georgie Fame, Running Man) and bass player Jeff Watts (Steel Mill), Mouse released their only album in 1973 for the short-lived Sovereign label. SOM NOSSO DE CADA DIA - Snegs (1974 Brazilian prog) Label:MOSHI MOSHI PRODUCTURA (Brazil) This is an essential record if you're a true progressive rock fan. This is a very underrated trio in which the drummer and bassist share the vocals and the third guy, a multi-instrumentalist flies high improvising on many different instruments but specially keyboards and saxophone.” "This is one of my favorite Brazilian prog album. The music presented here is a mixture of Italian symphonic prog and (south)-American jazz with some influences of English space rock. Very original in fact and it's almost impossible to give a direct reference. Manito's keyboard play is quite reminiscent of Keith Emerson, especially on "Massavilha" which is a real highlight of the album. A song like 'Direccion de Aquarius' could be found as well on an album of any Italian prog band. 'A outra face' starts with a bit more heavy and aggressive sound with great organ and drums, then becoming bluesy, jazzy in the middle part. It finishes in a very jazzy vein with great sax playing. As a summary "Snegs" is an excellent recommendation for any prog collection.” CD $17 SKU:20745

STEVE LINNEGAR’S SNAKESHED "-Classic Epics (Terrific flowing westcoasty 70s rock )Label:GUERSSEN ACID ARCHIVES FAVE! Steve Linnegar was an accomplished songwriter, musician, painter and martial arts disciple. A legendary figure from the South African 60s-70s underground music scene, the “hippie king of Cape Town” formed the Snakeshed band in the 70s along with top guitar player Martin Kopelowitz and keyboardist / producer Peter Hubner. Refusing offers from some record labels who insisted they should go “commercial”, they decided to record and release their first album, “Classic Epics”, all by themselves. Released in 1982 on their own private label, this is one of South African Prog/Psych crown jewels. Layers of acoustic / electric guitars, Gilmour-alike guitar solos, ultra-melodic vocals, effects, cool Oriental-Tao inspired lyrics…Culminating on the haunting 14-minutes long “Desert”. For the first time remastered from the original tapes. Insert with rare photos and liner notes by Aaron Milenski (Acid Archives). “Mysterious psych prog monster LP which gets better & better...Dreamy organ & soaring fuzz leads, at times like a cross between Marcus & Pink Floyd with folk elements & melodics all over the rhythmic grooves. Eastern tinged lyrics & samurai charging vocals which float amidst the pools of organ & catch late Beatle harmonicembers” —Paul Major “Terrific flowing westcoasty 70s rock with deep psych atmospheres on the 14-minute "Desert" - Patrick Lundborg LP $17 SKU:20754

With five volumes, this series is now the most complete investigation into Iranian singles ever issued. By now, you’ve probably developed an ear for the way that 70s Tehran pop stitches phrases together. And you know generations raised during the Pahlavi dynasty’s warmth for the West were excited to apply arranging tricks they gleefully swiped from disco & funk hits. Hear the microtonal grace notes as powerhouse singers like Soli & Sattar hit devotional ecstasy. WAPASSOU -Messe en ré mineur (1976 French weirdness)-Label:MUSEA Second (and best) album (1976) by this unconventional French band. Here, keyboardist Freddy Brua and friends created ethereal and spacey music that demonstrates a kinship to Popol Vuh, the softer parts of Amon Duul II, or the Ash Ra Tempel albums. This “mass” moves without urgency through dreamlike phases, with farfisa organ, acoustic and electric guitar, violin, sitar and worldess chanting throbbing their way through the varied melodies. Not to be missed, if “kosmische musik” is your thing! CD $14 SKU:20746

KIM JUNG MIWIND (S KOREAN 1973 female folk psych) Label:WORLD PSYCHEDELIA tAt the dawn of the 1970’s, South Korea’s rock music scene was at its zenith. Much of the reason for this was the god-like musical touch of guitar wizard, songwriter, producer, and arranger Shin Joong Hyun. For this album, he took a young girl named Kim Jung Mi, and transformed her from a wallflower student into a folk-psych chanteuse in record time (if Francoise Hardy is the Marianne Faithful of France, then Kim Jung Mi is, I suppose, the Francoise Hardy of Korea). CD $10 SKU:20397

LIVERPOOL - ST (Por Favor Sucesso Complete Recordings)Label:Sunny Pierrot ith a name that conjures up yet another Mersey-beat clone, who would expect that it was this same band, Liverpool, who recorded one of the greatest (and nearly forgotten) records from Brasil in the 1960’s. Mixing subtle influences from English/American rock with lilting and supple Brazilian rhythms and a heady dose of Tropicália inspiration, Mimi Lessa (guitar), Fughetti Luz (singer), Marcos Lessa (bass), Edinho Espíndola (drums) and Pekos (baixo) produced work that was close to the genius of Os Mutantes—an opinion widely shared in Brasil, by the way! Time and again, we were reminded of Os Mutantes and Caetano Veloso, and this from an album that came out hot on the heels of the world famous albums of those more high profile artists. Liverpool’s sole album, “Por Favor Sucesso” (Please Success) from 1969—included in its entirety here, along with songs from a film soundtrack (1970) and a late single as Liverpool Sound (1971)—resulted in the classification of the group in the regional phase in the legendary University Festival of Popular Music, where the group defended the title track from the album. The album consists of excellent compositions supporting intelligent and expressive texts meant to convey the daily life of the youth of the time. Mimi Lessa, one of most important and less valued guitarists of Brasilian national rock, shines throughout this disc. More than thirty years after it was recorded, the music of Liverpool does not sound dated, with its elaborate compositions and instrumental prowess garnering them the recognition that they lacked when these songs CD $16 SKU:20223

PLASTICLAND- Mink Dress and Other Cats (post punk psych) SAALE - Label:TIMOTHY'S BRAIN Record Collector magazine in England rightly calls this "a superb compilation of one of the true pioneers of post-punk psychedlia:—and it's true; an amazing collection of ultra-rare early singles from a truly under-rated band CD $10 SKU:5966

ROBBS Before, Then & After - (3xCD + DVD-four discs total)-Label:WET WORLD RECORDS (USA) This four-disc set contains 55 tracks and five video appearances by the Robbs, covering the bands entire recording career. With so much music on offer, a hearty helping of band history seems to be in order. Musically, the Robbs were noted for their use of harmony vocals, and instrumentation-clearly inspired by folk-rock, bubblegum music, and jangle pop. Great stuff-and a real labor of love for the label. Spotted by Dick Clark, the band was signed to Mercury Records in 1966, and moved to California to appear as regular performers on Where The Action Is during late 1966 and early 1967, replacing Paul Revere and the Raiders. The Robbs had some regional success between 1966 and 1970, at first for Mercury and subsequently for a variety of record labels. The Robbs have the distinction of placing the most singles on Billboard magazine's "Bubbling Under" chart (five as The Robbs, plus a final single as Cherokee) without ever once crossing over into the Billboard Hot 100 (ouch!). The Robbs were never able to garner a true nation-wide hit. Their lone album, from 1967, was compiled from the A-side and B-sides of their 1966 and 1967 singles, along with two new tracks. This self-titled LP made the Billboard 200 chart for one week in January 1968, peaking at #200, and the band was shortly thereafter dropped by Mercury Records. Upon signing to Atlantic in 1968, The Robbs pursued a more country rock orientation. After their two Atlantic singles missed even the "bubbling under" charts, Atlantic let the band go, and they were picked up by ABC/Dunhill in 1969. The Robbs continued to release singles for this label, with the usual regional success and some "bubbling under" appearances, but no national breakthrough. In 1971, the group changed their name to Cherokee, and re-emphazised their country rock influenced sound. They released one self-titled album as Cherokee, as well as the 1971 non-LP single "Girl, I've Got News For You". Both the album and the single featured the participation of Chris Hillman of The Byrds. CD $24 SKU:20194

RODD, KEITH - Saucers in the Sky (obscure 70s pop genius)Label:ROARATRODD , KEITH ORIO It would be inaccurate to call this a collection of forgotten pop classics. Forgotten implies that they were known in the first place. "Beyond the weird lyrics, many of the songs on Saucers In The Sky are just wonderful pop songs, with great melodies and strange, unexpected chord progressions... whereas most song-poems sound like the rush jobs they usually were, Keith's are surprisingly detailed, with weird production ideas, verses and choruses that actually make sense together, and good performances...a virtuosic songwriter. - Charlie Wilmoth, CD $10 SKU:14222

ROGER & WENDY- Love Rog + Wem (60s US psych folk) deluxe mini-LP sleeve - Label:LION The Roger & Wendy Love Rog & Wem album is a alluring collection of shimmering psych-folk gems, and is the rarest of the duo's records (fetching $900+). A superb artifact from the early 1970s underground psych folk scene, taken from the original master tapes, and using the original sleeve artwork for this deluxe mini-LP sleeve reissue. Booklet has photos, great stories, and five bonus tracks, too! CD $10 SKU:12014

SHAKERS,LOS 25 Originals-Unreleased Tracks: Uruguayan 70s Rock-Label:CIRCOLO DEL DIS Los Ineditas + La Vigencia two compilations of unreleased and rare Los Shakers material brought together in one place on this disc, amking this pretty essential. The Shakers burst on the scene in Uruguay with a look and sound that got them attention as South America's answer to the Beatles. They soon got a contract with Odeon in Argentina; Odeon brought them to Buenos Aires, where they had incredible success with a single featuring two of their own compositions, 'Break it all' and 'More'. This made the difference. The sound was Beatles-like, but not an ordinary or rough copy, instead a copy of superior quality, superior than many of the foreign singers of that era. Added to this, was the quality of their own compositions, their own songs were of a very high quality. CD $14 SKU:20380

T2- ST (obscure 70s psych prog)Label:ACME LION Even though fame and fortune never came to pass for T2, their Decca album “It’ll All Work out in Boomland” has become an all-time classic amongst collectors of progressive and psychedelic music, and even in the techno and dj scenes. Apart from a 1970 Sound of the 70’s BBC radio session, (included on our Acme/Lion reissue of “It’ll All Work Out in Boomland,” ACLN 1010 CD), fans assumed that “Boomland” was both the beginning and the end of the group’s recorded legacy. But Acme Records unearthed an eponymous second album of material, recorded in 1970 with the original line-up as demo tracks for a planned second album. This was first released way back in the late 1990’s, and is now available again thanks to the new Acme/Lion version which is the subject of this one-sheet. This second T2 album, had it been released in 1970, could have put the band on the same level of fame with the likes of Deep Purple, Free, and King Crimson (bands with whom T2 shared a stage). It’s hard-driving opener ‘Highway,’ ablaze with wailing guitars, gives way to moody introspection, culminating with the LSD induced finale ‘T2.’ It’s music that is dreamy without being sleepy; heavy without danger of suffocation. Those of you who were lucky enough to snap up a copy of the limited Acme Deluxe pressings of this album many years ago now can testify to the importance of these recordings. For those of you who missed out the first time around—or who have only recently discovered the greatness of the mighty T2—all we can say is, enjoy the power and glory of the second T2 album! TERRY & THE PIRATES- Comanche Boots (70s )-Label:ACADIA Twenty nine years after the release of the original Too Close For Comfort comes the third issue of this priceless and timeless music from San Francisco's own Terry & The Pirates.” Another view: “Probably only remembered today as one of the many bands graced by the guitarwork of John Cipollina following his departure from Quicksilver Messenger Service, and as a footnote in the career of Nicky Hopkins, Terry and the Pirates deserve much greater recognition. Although Cipollina’s feral guitar is undoubtedly essential to their charms, the work of Terry Dolan himself should not be underestimated. His voice is an acquired taste, a strange mixture of David Crosby and Captain Beefheart, but as such, it’s impressively distinctive. Meanwhile, his songwriting mines that same rich vein of American folk which yielded ‘Pride Of Man’ (so memorably covered by Quicksilver). The best songs on this collection of various live and studio recordings are certainly Dolan’s own. Whilst a version of Jackie Wilson’s ‘Higher & Higher’ might be entertainingly audacious, covers of ‘Mystery Train’ and ‘Don’t Do It’ aren’t going to make anybody forget those by The Band, despite some impressive sparring between Cipollina and second guitarist Greg Douglass on the latter. In this context, tracks like ‘Inside and Out’ and ‘Inlaws and Outlaws’ distinguish themselves as fine examples of original Californian rock n’ roll. Even if none of this is especially ground-breaking or epoch-defining music, it’s played with spirit and any fans of West Coast music who might have easily overlooked it should be sure to rectify their mistake. THIRD ESTATE, THE-Years Before The Wine & AGONISTES - DBL Label:LION Third Estate’s “Years Before the Wine” is an ambitious and intricate psychedelic concept album from 1976 about the French Revolution (!) which blends warm Southern summer sounds (the band were from Baton Rouge, Louisiana) with baroque song structures. Never fear, the serious subject matter is no match for the strong songwriting and light, flowing music. Stunning vocals from Fae Ficklin on the title track are lovely, but even without them this album would richly deserve its status as a psychedelic classic. Stark, intimate production, with tasty fuzz guitar, backwards tape-loop soundscapes and beautiful treated acoustic guitar, puts one in mind of the Ithaca/Agincourt/Friends trilogy from England. The sound of exploration is evident everywhere, as the band spreads its wings, and glorious harmonies flow forth. The previously unreleased album recorded as Agonistes (1973) shows that the later recordings were no fluke—it can stand alone as one of the most beguiling folk/psych albums we’ve ever heard. Additional bonus tracks include singles and home demos. Budget-priced double disc package includes a 28-page color booklet, with histories of both groups by band co-leader Robert Everett, as well as lyrics for all the songs included herein. PSYCHEDELIC UNDERGROUND- VOL 14 ( 70s psych prog )SAALE -Label:Garden of Delights Still plenty of greatness to unearth in the Psychedelic Underground -- just the sort of tripped-out grooves we've really come to love from this well-priced series! Some of the work here is as heavy on jazzy elements as it is psychedelic ones -- making for a great blend that's a bit more organic at times than you might expect -- a world-ranging approach to the styles that really keeps things interesting, and which nicely breaks past simple cliches of psychedelia. Plus, many of the tracks are of European origin, and from the 70s -- and they've got key proggish elements as well, especially on some of the jazzier numbers. Titles include "Summer 79" by Gravestone, "Arctic Ocean" by Pancake, "Back On My Hill" by Faithful Breath, "Ala Dalona" by Emma Myldenberger, "Question" by Joy Unlimited, "Bolero" by Aqua, and "Where Is Your Home Town COMP CD $7 SKU:8718
