WICKED - This Diamond Ring / Spider and the Fly ( 1979 Super rare garage W LENNY KAYE! ) TEST PRESSING 45 RPM
ISABELLE / BOMPThis was found in the Bomp warehouse recently, a test pressing on the BOMP subsidiary label, Isabelle. But nobody knew what it was, including Google! I sent out an e mail to all my record geek friends and to my surprise, even the best of the best weren't really sure, altho one said he thought it might be Lenny Kaye. Fortunately, I know Lenny, and sent him an e mail. He replied within minutes to my plea for assistance identifying the record... as follows.
"Ah, record geeks r us... Anyway, the Wicked was myself, Andy Paley, Eric Rosenfeld, once lead guitarist of the Sidewinders, Andy's Boston group), and though I can't be sure cause I only remember a bit of the session, possibly Eric Lindgren (later of the Space Negroes etc.) It is, of course, a continuation of the "Spider and the Fly" saga with begins with Bobby Christian and the Allen Sister's recording in the 1950s, that began a much-quoted allusion between Andy and me throughout the seventies. Then we found a garage cover of the song (actually, a somewhat takeoff on the movie "The Fly") by the Monocles in the sixties, and so we did our own version of this wacky novelty song to continue this one-in-each-decade tradition. Isabelle was named for the owner of the record store in Scituate, Mass. that we used to frequent....The flip was a cover of "This Diamond Ring" which featured Eric on guitar. "
Lenny Kaye
So, turns out this single is quite a gem, sure to be quite valuable in years to come.
