DIAMONDBACK -1974 (1974 blues tock rarity)Label:PACEMAKER Diamondback were a short lived blues rock band whose album from 1974 was never actually released....until 2008! This album is a gem and the song, 'One Track Open,' is a funky track that deserves to be heard. Diamondback featured Toronto legends Mike McKenna (Mainline, Luke and the Apostles, Ugly Ducklings) and Scott "Professor Piano" Cushnie. "Diamondback was an ambitious project I got into after Mainline finally folded in 1974. It involved alot of very talented musicians and I always felt we really played well together. We used to play in and around Toronto on pretty well a regular basis for awhile. We recorded a great album back then but somehow it was never released and the band members ended up drifting onto other projects. I felt I did some of my best playing on those sessions and the songwriting and vocals were really strong – everyone’s performance was stellar. It was too bad that “Diamondback ’74” never hit the shelves." —Mike McKenna CD $10 SKU:26195

MYSTERY PLANE-Still Life (70s Amon Duul style)-Label:LION : Mystery Plane formed in 1980 from the ashes of 70's new wave band 3D5 who's line-up also featured future Cure member Porl Thompson. This record was originally a demo cassette made in 1981 that was hawked around record labels with a view for release. Later Color Tapes released a 100 copies edition. To support their demo at the time the band played such gigs at the Marquee, Rock Garden and The Bridgehouse supporting bands such as Fad Gadget, Modern English and Henry Padovani (Ex-Police) in London. This sublime minimal basement krauty synth LP was inspired by bands such as Neu, Amon Duul ll, and "Vienna" period Ultravox. The album features guitar work of Gerald O' Connell who was a big fan of Ash Ra Tempel's guitarist Manuel Gottsching. A year later he went on to form Lives Of Angels who made the classic cold wave album "Elevator To Eden" which was originally released on Color Tapes in 1983. Mystery Plane have been featured on the sold out Cold Waves Of Color compilation series. CD $10 SKU:26173

NEON PEARL 1967 Recordings-UK Psych garage- Label:LION Lost-in-time, dreamy, mysterious sounding British psychedelia from the magical year of 1967, never released at the time. Neon Pearl was created in 1967 by supreme drummer/songwriter Peter Dunton (The Flies, Gun, Please, T2...) with the intention of playing in Germany. Once there, they played a lot of gigs and were offered a residency at the Top Ten Club in Siegen. Their particular sound, mix of covers, original material (written by Dunton) and psychedelic improvisation, earned them local cult status. After some line-up changes, the band regrouped in London as a trio: Peter Dunton on drums/keyboards/vocals plus Bernie Jinks (Bulldog Breed, T2) on bass and Nick Spenser on guitar. This line-up recorded some studio demos, featuring tracks like 'Dream Scream', which was usually their final number in their live sets, where they extended it to 10 minutes or more. With no interest from record companies, Neon Pearl split, giving birth to Please, another cult band led by Peter Dunton. Those demos were first recovered by the Acme label in 2001 and subsequently released as '1967 Recordings'. "The music of Neon Pearl is not about complication or extraordinary guitar playing - Neon Pearl is about the steady redemption of warm fog, ethereal jangling guitars, dream laden lyrics and the altered state of consciousness it's able to bring on though an elegant deep and pervasive sedative drone." ~Jenell Kesler CD $10 SKU:26172

YAMA & the Karma Dusters-Up From the Sewers (1970 quintessential anarcho-hippie record)-Label:LION Super political, rocking, anti-establishment communal band (c. 1970) put together as a result of the Kent State Massacre. As the Euphoria Blimpworks Banliond, fronted by Howard Berkman from morose garage punksters the Knaves, they played demonstrations and student strikes when they weren’t opening for blues royalty—or being the first band to play the yard at Cook County Jail. They were inter-racial, anti-war, Stop the Bomb, free love hippies, the wildest of the wild kids. And this is the quintessential anarcho-hippie record, a surprisingly well-engineered indie effort which came inside home-made silk-screened jackets, with twisted, poetic lyrics (Dylan or Arthur Lee and Love? you decide), and funky, rocking bones—political, sociological, ecological, reflective and free-love sexy. The Karma Dusters really cook on the up-tempo tracks, sounding at times like a cross between The Blues Project and Dylan's band circa 1966, augmented by some dazzling violin. This excellent sounding master-tape reissue has two bonus tracks; it also has two booklets—one is for the outrageous and explicit Gonzo history of the band and their urban commune; the other is a wrap-around booklet for lyrics, all served up together in a Mylar plastic sleeve. You just know the FBI has a huge file on these punks. But do they have the album? CD $10 SKU:20098

GIVE US A FUTURE- The History of Anagram Records 1982-87 Label:ANAGRAM Give Us A Future - The History of Anagram Records 1982-87: “First time on CD for this comprehensive round up of the influential Anagram Records. Anagram Records was started by Cherry Red Records in 1982. At that time the Cherry Red label had a very distinct image and a new label was needed to release records by harder edged Punk and Goth acts. The name Anagram was chosen because it had no distinct identity, the image would be created by the music released. The first release, One Way System's 'Give Us A Future/Just Another Hero' came out in September 1982 and was a Top 30 Independent chart hit. Another 14 of the tracks on this compilation also entered the Independent singles chart. Many of these early tracks have never been on CD and are much sort after by collectors. The bumper CD booklet contains a listing of the entire Anagram Records catalogue as well as an extensive history of the label. Alien Sex Fiend, Meteors, Angelic Upstarts, One Way System, the Vibrators, Outcasts, Pressure, and more. Comprehensive round up of a highly influential punk label. COMP CD $5 SKU:26198

APHRODITE'S CHILD - It’s Five O Clock (1969 pop psych)Label:WORLD PSYCHEDELIA (Korea) The first single, ‘Let Me Love, Let Me Live,’ released in October 1969, made it to a number one position in the French charts, but it was the B-side ‘Marie Jolie’ that was most popular in the rest of Europe. The title track ‘It's Five O'clock’ quickly followed the same path; released in December 1969, it did well in the charts of many European countries. Dream-like, baroque, carefully crafted pop/psych with English lyrics, in some ways very much in the style of English bands of the era, but with that little twist that makes it very special; three bonus tracks include rare singles; lyrics and photos too in the 16-page booklet. CD $10 SKU:18951

BELLADONNA -Night Shade (Texas metal/hard rock 1990)Label:SHROOMANGEL Obscure Melodic Metal/Hard Rock band from Texas — featuring Robert Hampton from Hooker —with a shelved album forgotten since 1990. The tape with the album songs was rescued recently to digital treatment and added a few bonus tracks from rough demos. All of this material was recorded between 1989 and 1990. Belladonna was formed in January of 1989. By that winter the band had moved to Nashville for a production deal that went sour. The experience inspired the writing of 'Watching You,' 'Power Surge', and 'Once Again.' Upon returning to Houston the band began playing out, getting radio airplay, gaining a strong following, and by the summer of 1990 recorded a live video concert for the TV show Metallurgy. By the fall of 1990 the song 'Once Again' caught the ear of Rick Chavez (producer and leading member of the band Drive (Rampage/Rhino Records) leading the band to be courted for a recording deal. Tensions had been brewing towards the latter part of the year and the band inevitably split up with Mike and Rude leaving for Los Angeles to record 'Once Again' for Drive's "Diablero" album and eventually join forces with Drive. File Under: Melodic Heavy Metal, Glam Metal, Hard Rock. For fans of: Seduce, Odin, St. Elmo's Fire and World War III. (LIMITED TO 300 COPIES - TEXAS ROCK DYAMONDS SERIES) CD $12 SKU:24723

BOSSMEN - Personally Yours: The Complete Anthology w liners, rare photos, booklet. -Label:LION Liner notes by Dick Wagner + reflections on the Bossmen by Bo White and Ryan Sparks ,Massive color booklet with rare photos, Limited to 500 copies.Dick Wagner and his guitar. The Frost. Ursa Major. Lou Reed's "Rock 'n' Roll Animal". Alice Cooper's "Welcome to My Nightmare". Kiss. Aerosmith. Peter Gabriel. Wagner's contribution to rock 'n' roll is immense. And it all started a little bit north of Detroit with the Bossmen. In just three years (1964-67), The Bossmen amassed an impressive run of no less than eight regional number one singles. When you listen to these eighteen original compositions you can sense the long hours and the countless amount of blood, sweat and tears that went into creating them. Whether it's a stinging guitar solo (the sonic blast of an intro on 'Sunshine' comes to mind), a regal four part vocal harmony or a soaring arrangement, each tune bears the distinct early characteristics of the ‘Wagner’ sound that would later bring him success on a global scale and write him into the annals of rock ‘n' roll history. "I look back on the days of The Bossmen with a sort of reverence. These were my first days of recording my own original songs, entering the concert scene and learning the basic trials of making it in the music business. I get chills even today just thinking back on the two or three block line that formed every time we played our home town venue, Daniel’s Den. The Bossmen were the heroes and purveyors of the primal Rock energy for that angelic group of screaming youth. MAN… those were the days!" —Your Boss man, Dick Wagner • Liner notes by Dick Wagner + reflections on the Bossmen by Bo White and Ryan Sparks CD $10 SKU:15879

BRAM STOKER -Heavy Rock Spectacular (1972 prog rock)Label:Talking Elephant Records Outstanding album of classic progressive rock (released in 1972), recorded by virtuoso musicians, miles ahead of Atomic Rooster, Black Widow et al. The founder and organist of Bram Stoker, Tony Bronsdon, was trained as classical musician, and didn't need to learn anything from Keith Emerson & Co. This is a unique masterpiece of progressive rock, brought to the point of perfection, with delighful organ (Hammond) solos laid over quite heavy pulsating drumming and and roaring guitars. Bram Stoker was formed in 1969 in their south coast home town of Bournemouth, England, UK. One of the early gigs was as support act for the Who at Bournemouth Pavilion. Roger Daltry asked for details of the band and invited them to record a demo album at his home in Berkshire. A few months later Bram Stoker was signed up to an independent label owned by Rolling Stones manager Tony Calder. Not to be missed! CD $10 SKU:24837

CHAMELEON- Rising (70s Texas)-Label:SHROOMANGEL a new limited edition TEXAS ROCK DYAMONDS series of small press-run CD releases "Beginning in the early 1970’s and continuing until 1980, this relatively unknown band from Houston managed to record a stunning collection of songs that are the musical expression of the word Chameleon. Twisting and turning, changing colors, leaping out of your speakers at times with unbridled ferocity- this band will hold your attention throughout the 70+ minutes contained on this disc. Musicians Spencer Clark (guitars, vocals), Mike Huey (drums), Craig Gysler (keys, vocals), and Rick Huey (bass) rounded out the mid 70’s line-up with a key change being made later in 1978 with the addition of Marty Naul (Oz Knozz) on drums. The band’s sound and style reflect the artists they listened to and loved yet at the same time they managed to craft their own unique tones. One may hear reflections of Peter Gabriel era Genesis, Canterbury heavyweights Camel, King Crimson, Dixie Dregs, and Eloy in their music (emphasis mine)." •Previously unreleased vintage studio tracks spanning 1976 to 1978 •Chameleon to be featured in an upcoming edition of Progression Magazine. CONCRETE RUBBER BAND -Risen Savior(Official reissue of this insane underground basement psychedelic rock album, a massively-rare 1974 release)Label:HIDDEN VISION BIzarre burbling electronic embellishments find unity with abundant fuzz guitar, organ, and male and female lead vocals. A very strange rock album (in the best way), which just happens to have religion as its subject. "Official reissue of this insane underground basement psychedelic rock album, a massively-rare 1974 release on the Missouri-based American Artists label (AAS1164), of which only two or three copies are known to be exist in private collections. The song titles reveal the Christian undercurrent, but don’t be put off by that (if such a thing would be off-putting for you): this is a very strange and unusual rock album which just happens to have religious undertones, replete with organ, fuzz guitar, male and female lead vocals and masses of electronic embellishments—arguably more akin to Debris or Intersystems than anything else. The label says this about it: "Some of the most ‘out there’ psychedelic sounds can be found on this Kansas trio's mega-rare custom LP. The song, ‘Christian,’ for example, opens with a Bach fugue before laying in its steady rock beat punctuated with subterranean wah-wah guitar and a wild, heavily modulated lead. The song, ‘Wicked,’ opens side two with a bizarre amalgam of what sounds like synthesized, bubbling lava pits, frequency oscillations, distorted, sci-fi vocals and shortwave, static patterns. This is psychedelia at its most underground and extreme, with all the ear marks of a bad drug trip which, given the songs dark subject matter, works just fine. Likewise, ‘What Shall We Do?’ opens with a lengthy outpouring of some of the most vicious, distorted, fuzz guitar ever then relaxes into a spooky, dream-like ballad before it climaxes with a flying saucer effect that sounds straight out of Pink Floyd’s “Dark Side of the Moon.” There are several fine and moody garage tracks here as well. The overall impact is difficult to describe: the songs are highly listenable and quite creative. Dense echoes add to the homemade feel of the entire project. Duncan Long, the main man behind the synths, guitars and song writing is now a published science fiction author, which explains a lot, we think. CD $10 SKU:26057

EDEN ROSE - On the Way to Eden (1970 PSYCH SPACE ROCK) Label:Llion It might be easy to think of Eden Rose as simply a first version of famed French progressive band Sandrose. Both bands had the same musicians; both existed at nearly the same moment in time (c. 1970). But Eden Rose is now seen, quite rightly, as something unique, a chimera from the misty past, a time during which the winds of change were blowing on the fixed universe of music. Rules were blown away, stagnant structures were swept aside, and musical conventions emancipated, this freshness and spontaneity the essence of a style that hadn’t yet been formalised.
And man, if my ears don’t deceive me, the main theme from ‘Walking In the Sea’ (before it spins off into Jimi Hendrix territory) sure sounds like a lovely jazzy riff on Serge Gainsbourg’s ‘Je t’aime… moi non plus,’ which had been released the year before this album hit the racks. Two bonus tracks are from the band’s only single that contained non-LP tracks. Booklet has the band’s story in English and French, and is printed on FSC recycled, chlorine-free, 100% post-consumer fiber paper manufactured using biogas energy.CD $10 SKU:19929

FOUR LEVELS OF EXISTENCE - ST LTd edition SAALE! ( 70’s Greek psych, 24 page booklet, rare photos best Greek psychedelic album ever recorded?? ) -Label:PACEMAKER Slightly revamped second edition of an album that many people consider to be the best Greek psychedelic album ever recorded, a belief that would mean that the Four Levels of Existence LP would supersede albums by artists like Axis, Aphrodite’s Child, Socrates, and George Romanos. We’ll let you decide the argument, for there is no doubt of one thing—that this is tremendous hard edged psychedelic rock, originally released on LP in a very small quantity by the private Venus label in 1976. As band leader Athanasios Alatas said: “Through Nick’s musical quest, Mario’s sensitivity, Christos’ madness, and my thoughts, we create many songs, all characterized by a psychedelic music sound, Greek lyrics, and monumental guitar solos.” Since the appearance of our first edition of this album on CD, the excellence of the band has not gone unnoticed.* (see below) This carefully documented reissue contains the entire Four Levels of Existence LP, the only recordings they ever made. A twenty-four page booklet includes historical background on the Greek music scene of the early 1970’s, details of the band’s past written by Alatas, rare photos of the group, as well as lyrics in both Greek and English. This second CD edition is strictly limited to 1,000 copies.*As some of you may know by now, the guitar riff from ‘Someday in Athens’ plays a major role in Jay-Z’s single, ‘Run This Town’ (featuring Rihanna, Kanye West) from his chart-topping “The Blueprint 3” album. Just another reason for people to discover the legendary, fuzz-guitar laced work of Four Levels of Existence. CD $10 SKU:19944

HANDS -Caviar Bobsled (70s style prog) -Label:SHROOMANGEL "Hands was originally active back in the '70s, but time and circumstances didn't see them acquire a great deal of success back then. They reformed in 2001 however, and have been a going entity ever since. "Caviar Bobsled" is their most recent studio album, released in 2015 via the US label ShroomAngel Records. The music is deceivingly and subtly complex though, so it really needs a few spins before it will settle with you.” —Windhawk, ProgArchives. "For those who have followed the band, their blend of Gentle Giant, Kansas, Camel, and Happy the Man styled prog remains intact, and there's some truly fabulous material here on Caviar Bobsled. There have been a lot of great prog albums released in 2015, and Caviar Bobsled is certainly one of them. Holding back a bit on the bombast, this latest Hands offering combines intricate prog with lush folk and a touch of jazz-fusion for a sound that instantly tickles the senses and keeps you coming back for more. A truly gorgeous album that I can't recommend highly enough!” —Seaoftranquillity.orgCD $10 SKU:24721

HEYOKA- Secret Rarities 1978-86-Label:SHROOMANGEL a new limited edition TEXAS ROCK DYAMONDS series of small press-run CD releases The music you are now listening to represents the best of the remaining previously unreleased Heyoka recordings both live and studio. The original 1979 studio sessions were first presented as rough mixes to various people very close to the band at the time, and one of those people fortunate enough to have received one of the demo cassettes was living in Louisiana and was able to preserve that tape over the years. That cassette is the source for the 1979 studio sessions (released on Spirit of Revelation in their final form) herein, and provides a different perspective on the core songs of Heyoka as far as how they were mixed, the lead guitar takes, etc. The track “Moods” is quite the rarity, only recently re-recorded by the band, this song could be considered the last great prog-rock epic written and performed live but never properly recorded in the studio. This live recording of the track is the only surviving example of it from the active period of the band. The other tracks are gathered from various sources and give you more of a clear picture as to what the band was about both in the studio and live– playing their top caliber originals mixed with select covers, usually cuts by artists such as Pink Floyd, Rush, or Jethro Tull among others. Presented in a digipak with foldout mini poster-insert, limited to only 300 copies, all songs and alternate studio versions, are for the first time released on CD. First one in the Texas Rock Dyamonds Series. File Under: Pomp Rock, Melodic Hard Rock, Progressive Hard Rock. For fans of: Prism, Trillion, 70s Kansas, 70s Styx. (LIMITED TO 300 COPIES - TEXAS ROCK DYAMONDS SERIES) CD $10 SKU:24718

HUNT & TURNER- Magic Landscape (1972 West Coast groove)-Label:LION Fabulous grooving folk rock sounds with plenty of atmosphere, first released by the much beloved Village Thing label in 1972. Ian Hunt and John Turner first teamed-up in the late summer of 1970, the inevitable collaboration of two of the West Country's most sought-after session musicians. CD $10 SKU:20171

IL BALLETTO DI BRONZO - Serio 2222 - W 12 PAGE BOOKLET ( Raw-edged heavy rock JIMMY PAGE STYLE ) -Label:LION Raw-edged heavy rock, fronted by Lino Ajello's powerful electric guitars, channeling the dark, jagged energy of Jimmy Page, Adrian Gurvitz, and Jeff Beck. Il Balletto di Bronzo absorbed their influences (Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, The Yardbirds), but moved from there into an inspired, hard-edged musical space; the band's overwhelming power and great melodies make them irresistible. ‘Un posto’ and ‘Neve Calda’ are centered around simple but effective guitar riffs. ‘Eh eh ah ah’ starts like a nice mellow ballad, but gets into a hard blues rock groove. On side two, there's the seven-minute mammoth heavy grind of ‘Incantesimo’ and the colossal ‘Missione Sirio 2222,’ almost ten minutes of droning acid rock with whirling guitars and heavy pounding drums, sandwiched between an acoustic intro and outro. No wonder Nurse With Wound cited Il Balletto di Bronzo as an influence. Digipack comes with 12-page color booklet discussing Il Balletto Di Bronzo's strange legacy. CD $10 SKU:16072

J. TEAL BAND - Cooks-reissue of 1977 private press hard rock album from South Carolina-Label:ROCKADROME digipack reissue of 1977 private press hard rock album from South Carolina, originally released on the Mother Cleo label. Well respected among collectors for it’s top notch guitar playing and clean undistorted jams. A real long lost gem from the 70s private press underground. “Surprisingly good, underrated small-town hardrocker cruising on a backbone of tight jams that enhance almost every song, with a guitar-playing that is Quicksilver-like in it’s probing flow. Billy Hardy’s lead playing is as good as anything I’ve heard on an Lp of this kind, and unusually varied. The band also offers up a long introspective Top Drawer-ish brooder, utilizing an odd psychedelic effect which again sounds like something from a late 1960s Bay Area album. This LP isn’t unknown, but I bet a lot of people out there will be surprised by how good it is” – The Acid Archives. Add this praise from the blogosphere, and one must conclude that this is an album of undeniable quality: "Hot Southern guitar-rock album that blows away everything else in the genre. It’s not “rural rock” at all. There’s a tad of funk influence, but certainly no country. The vocals are snotty and nasal, which actually gives the music a dangerous edge more genuine than the usual throaty he-man voices that go with this kind of thing. Lots of great lead guitar and a real backwoods sleazy vibe. You get the impression these guys’ days are numbered, and they play with that kind of urgency. In the meantime, you wouldn’t want them getting anywhere near your sister, but you’d be honored to let them borrow your guitar.” CD $15 SKU:26059

JOSEFUS --Not Dead Yet (Texas hard rock Unreleased 1978 Studio Sessions & Live)-Label:SHROOMANGEL Josefus are part of the first wave of Hard Rock bands formed in the end of the 60s, being the true pioneers of Heavy Rock in Texas. Their Dead Man album is one of the greatest American Hard Rock albums of the early 70s and deserves all the cult status it has been given all these years. The band resurfaced in the late 70s and then again in the late 80s, recording sporadically never abandoning their Bluesy Hard Rock roots. In the new millennium when everyone was thought the band was history, Josefus hits the stages again and keeps to this day active. This collection of rare material starts with 4 demo tracks from 1978, plus selected live cuts (mostly from 2012), where we can see the power of the band revived and refreshed after 5 decades of existence.
Presented in a 6-panel Digipak and limited to only 300 copies! Second in the Texas Rock Dyamonds Series. File Under: Heavy Rock, Blues Rock, Southern Rock, Psychedelic Rock. (LIMITED TO 300 COPIES - TEXAS ROCK DYAMONDS SERIES) CD $14 SKU:24717

KENSINGTON MARKET- Avenue Road (60s pop) LAST COPIES! Label:PACEMAKER A staple on the Yorkville Village scene in Toronto during the mid-to-late '60's, Kensington Market were discovered in 1967 by musical entrepreneur Bernie Finkelstein (who would later help The Paupers and Bruce Cockburn, among others). Finkelstein was able to land the band a record deal with Warner Brothers. In 1968 Kensington Market did the soundtrack to the NFB film "The Ernie Game"—a big deal for a Canadian band. That same year they released their debut album, “Avenue Road,” (named after a street that intersects Yorkville Avenue). It was a modest effort, noteworthy for decent pop instincts and solid songwriting. This album tinkles like wind-chimes, refracts light like a sun-catcher in the window, has the charm of a luminous crescent moon candle, glow-in-the dark stars on the bedroom ceiling. Kensington Market were produced by Felix Pappalardi of Mountain fame, who also produced the Cream. Kensington Market were: Gene Martynec (keyboard, guitar, vocals), Keith McKie (rhythm guitar, vocals), Luke Gibson (guitar, vocals), Alex Darou (bass), and Jimmy Watson (drums & percussion). Same personnel both albums. Martynec later showed up as an arranger on Lou Reed's “Berlin” album! A band ripe for rediscovery. CD $10 SKU:19936

LIGHTNIN' HOPKINS -Shootin' Fire (1969 recordings) -Label:CICADELIC RECORDS (USA) Lightnin' Hopkins recorded over a dozen songs for the Clarity Music Company at the "ACA" Recording Studio in Houston in April of 1969. These songs ranged from new originals, such as 'Born In The Bottom,' 'December 7, 1941,' 'A Rainy Day In Houston,' and 'Stinking Foot,' to oldies such as 'Feel Like Ballin' The Jack,' 'Shake That Thing' and 'Shinin' Moon.' Since the 1970's some of these songs have been released on haphazard compilations with the bass and drums mixed too high, the guitar leads mixed too low, and excessive "reverb" in an attempt to make Lightnin' sound more contemporary. Now for the first time ever the original four track masters have been re-mixed without any of the extraneous studio misjudgments that marred previous releases. As an added bonus, previously unreleased recordings such as 'Movin' On Out When The Saints March In,' 'Old House Torn Down,' 'Mistrust My Baby And She Mistrust Me,' and 'Baby Please Don't Do Me Wrong' are included on this compendium of Lightnin' Hopkins gems. A large selection of never before seen photos, contracts, and documents rounds out this collection of rarities. The net result is 77 minutes of Lightnin' Hopkins in his prime "shootin' fire". •Taken from the original four track masters. •Includes previously unreleased tracks. CD $10 SKU:19764

LIGHTNIN' HOPKINS -Lightnin' Strikes (early 60s recordings) ! -Label:CHARLY Big, wide sound from Lightnin' Hopkins. This brings together some early-'60s sides that Hopkins recorded for the Chicago-based Vee-Jay label, although all of them were recorded in his native Houston. Lightnin's spoken introduction sets up the hilarious "Big Car Blues," part of five live tracks aboard, before setting up eight heavily reverbed studio tracks from Bill Quinn's Gold Star Studios. The final two are full-band tracks produced by drummer King Ivory Lee Semiens with Lightnin' playing electric. Great guitar music from the Texas blues master. Nice digipack edition. CD $12 SKU:24842

MADS Molesto (Psych Rock Wild Masterpiece 1968-1971) Label:LION Deluxe ed. w glossy insert full of photos Bi-lingual booklet with band history + lyrics & gig poster- Los Mads started out in the mid-1960's, playing covers and a few of their own songs on Peruvian television. But a chance sea-side encounter with Mick Jagger and Keith Richards after a private party got the Mads the chance to go to England; interest from Stones' manager Marshall Chess got them backstage to see Hendrix at the Isle of Wight—and recording time in the Rolling Stones studio. Some demos recorded there and at Jagger's Stargroves castle (recorded live to studio truck, just like Led Zeppelin did for their third and fourth albums) plus a name change to Molesto got them gigs at the main venues in London. They jammed with Steve Winwood and Brian Davison (The Nice); they played with Jeff Beck and Carmine Appice; Molesto's guitar player, Alex Ventura, worked in a clothing boutique alongside Freddie Mercury and Roger Taylor. They were in the musical heart of England. And at that point, faced with growing friction within the group, Molesto disbanded. This disc collects recordings from all three stages of Los Mads/The Mads/Molesto's six year career, including two tracks from the Stargroves session. The early tracks are groovy post Summer of Love stuff: 'Birds in My Tree' is a musical creamsicle, just right for summer nights. The excellent eight plus minute instrumental 'Tumor Bossa' has a Santana-esque feel. But the flamethrower guitar on Molesto tracks like 'Feels Like Love' and 'Fly Away' (which luckily clocks in at more than seven minutes) needs to be heard to be believed. Hard driving and heavy; wild, fast, rhythmic, and furious: top of the table stuff. Most tracks are sung in English. Like all Repsychled titles, this is available exclusively from Lion Productions and our friends. CD $14 SKU:15326

MANDALA - Soul Crusade (1966 heavy soul psych) Label:PACEMAKER “Soul Crusade” LP was released in 1968 and happened to be the first and only album by MANDALA. It presented a bunch of original songs with rich, gorgeous and quite heavy arrangements built around solid beat grooves, blistering guitar riffing, and powerful Hammond-organ chords. The vocal duties were taken over by Ray Kenner who had powerful, soulful, and charismatic voice. Stylistically, Mandala were one of those hard rockin’ bands who performed original Psychedelic Art-Rock with strong influences from Soul, Funk, and Rhythm-N-Blues music. O TERCO - ST (!969 Brazilian prog psych super group) Label:Discos Mariposa Their second album (1972), a landmark of Brazilian progressive/psychedelic rock, in no small part thanks to Luiz Pablo Simas (ex-member of Módulo 1000), who brought his talent and his mini-moog to the band. O Terço had been working on a new sound for some time, taking part in the "Aberto para Obras" spectacle in 1970 at the Teatro de Arena do Largo da Cariocafor, the main arena for bullfighting. People wending their way through barbed-wire had to choose between looking at a lower stage, upon which Modulo 1000 was playing, or at an upper stage, where O Terço was playing. Below, a woman prepared popcorn in a stove, and further on, seated in a urinal, the brother of O Terço band-member Jorge Amiden played static on his guitar for three hours, then smashed his instrument to pieces! Participation in this sort of anarchy makes it no surprise that their album kicks off with a hard rock guitar riff, perhaps influenced by King Crimson, Led Zeppelin or even Black Sabbath; even so, other tracks present a blend of symphonic and psychedelic sounds, with beautiful pastoral passages that demonstrate the influence of Os Mutantes, the Moody Blues, and early Pink Floyd. The final track, ‘Amanhecer total” (Complete Dawn), is amazing—a nineteen minute collage with a pastoral introduction (and lovely female vocals); vocals, synth lines, acoustic guitars and percussion effects then provide a fine, easy atmosphere; then a psychedelic section, with strange keyboard effects merged with fading voices—dreamy, and ambient; heavy guitar riffs, low-profile keyboards, and aggressive vocals revisit the album’s first track; then the finale, with soft piano (revisiting the bucolic origins of the suite) and synthesizer coloring the mantra-like chorus. A grand finale for a great album. Two bonus tracks are from an EP released between the first album and this one: ‘Tributo ao sorriso’ and ‘Adormeceu’, which are both quite pretty, and pretty famous, in Brazil.” CD $10 SKU:26058

OPHIUCHUS-ST (obscure 70s psych blues) Label:LION Ophiucus may be the name of an obscure constellation, but it's also the name of a French band that recorded an exceptional album in 1972 for the Barclay label. All the members of the band had already enjoyed ample success in music before musician/actor Emmanuel Booz brought them together in 1971: Jean-Pierre Pouret was a well-known session-man for Sylvie Vartan; brothers Alain and Bernard Labacci released albums as Tom & Jerry, and supported Jimi Hendrix for a TV appearance; Michel Bonnecarrere had founded the band Zoo (one of Andy Votel from the B-Music label’s favorites), and was one of the composers, arrangers and musicians for that group’s first two albums. Apropos of the period, the band members decided to live together as a small family in Flagy, a small town in France, where they lived a happy life, and wrote the tracks which adorn this reissue. This ambitious album somehow manages to blend grungy psychedelic rock, acoustic blues, and densely orchestrated French pop/psych (in an Ilous & Decuyper vein) into an impressive and cohesive whole. Sandy Spencer, cellist and member of Mormos contributed wonderful playing on ‘Ne cherche plus’ and ‘Inachevée.’ This reissue includes the original album plus eight bonus tracks in English meant to be the basis of an international album that was never issued. A fulsome 28-page booklet includes band history and commentaries on the songs written by Ophiucus, photos, lyrics (French and English), and a contemporary review. Not to be missed! CD $10 SKU:20094

PENTHOUSE 5-The World is Love ( rare mid sixties TEXAS garage psych) -Label:COLLECTIBLES Hailing from the Dallas suburb Oak Cliff, The Penthouse 5 had its heyday in 1966-'67, when the band recorded a number of self-penned tunes and released two 45s. Several recordings from 1967 and other, more psychedelic influenced tracks remained unreleased, but demonstrate the musical versatility of the band. CD $10 SKU:24323

PROTOTYPE- ST (old school AOR 1983) Label:PACEMAKER A great AOR album, with a Hipginosis cover and a top 30 hit in Video Kids. Prototype was Dan Lowe and Brad Stekel who had been in the 49th Parallel, Painter and 451. "Very good, if you like old school AOR with great keys, you'll love this CD. Doug Riley is a fantastic singer and this is indeed a very fine AOR album. I don't think you'll find better examples of pompy AOR than 'Behind Your Eyes' or 'Live Forever.’ An excellent blend of high class melodic rock with great use of backing vocals and loads of keyboard blasts coming out of everywhere! ROMANOS,GEORGE- Two Small Blue Horses (1970 Greek heavy fpsych fuzz guitar) SAALE! -Label:LYRA (Greece) If you like the thought of songs overrun by heavy fuzz guitars and immersed in studio effects, then this is an album for you! It’s a record (released by Zodiac in 1970) that bears comparison to the first three Erkin Koray albums, in part due to it’s Middle-Eastern psychedelic intensity; really great stuff—exotic melodies coupled with a full-force fuzz assault; a slight nod to the Byrds (‘Eight Miles High’ riff makes a dramatic appearance), but with baroque pop/psych tracks of a Left Banke type (‘Maria’ springs to mind) thrown in for added spice. Infused throughout with Greek-tinged raga fuzz guitar freakouts that float in and out of orchestrated psychy pop, "Two Small Blue Horses" is a gem of an album that should be in any serious European psych collection. To top it all, this is one of the rarest psychedelic records ever pressed, with original copies changing hands from time to time for more than $1,000. Great sounding reissue of a weird and wonderful record. CD $10 SKU:21051

GAIETY RECORDS STORY- VOL.2 (Rare 60s garage, punk & psych singles) SALE! Label:PACEMAKER At last, a second collection of rare singles from the label that produced the cream of the mid-sixties crop of Canadian garage, punk, and psychedelic music! The Gaiety roster was rich in talent (the 49th Parallel, Jarvis Street Review, and Souls of Inspyration, not to mention the Checkerlads, White Knights, Dewline, Tomorrow's Keepsake, NRG, Merriday Park, and Portland Street South)—but it was not rich in resources, which is why these singles are so incredibly rare. This second Gaiety Records volume has twenty-four tracks in all, ranging from the ferocious punk psych of Solid Reputation’s ‘Lies’ to the wonderfully druggy (and truly demented) ‘Ode to a Cucumber, A Berry, and A Flower", a song that deserves to be in the pantheon of weird psychedelia right alongside the West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band’s ‘Help, I’m a Rock’. NRG’s UK psych-inspired ‘Magic Man,’ much in demand in collector’s circles, is here in all its glory—along with six other tracks by this underrated band, including the psychedelic groover ‘Withcraft’. Other highlights are four more terrific beat/pop songs from the Plague and Lexington Avenue (bands who would become better known later as Jarvis Street Review). Tracks by the Checkerlads, Tomorrow's Keepsake, Flying Colours, Portland Street South, round out the disc, and (we hope) bring pleasure to everyone. COMP CD $10 SKU:16069
