BACK IN STOCK, SAALE, ONE ONLY AND MORE!

It’s our semi-famous mid week update, with all kinds of crazy stuff… BACK IN STOCK, SAALE, ONE ONLY AND REMINDERS.

I’ve had a good dig thru the magazine sectionin particular, lowing prices and fixing the inventory. As is the way of the world, we had some things that were not listed and some listed that we didn’t have, so you’ll see some adds to that section, including a bunch of Shindig magazinespreviously thought out of stock.

And as always, have a look at the usual suspects, $5 and UNDER, $5-$10, and ONE ONLY, for items that are going bye bye to make room for MORE stuff.

ONE ONLY will not be restocked!

MAYBE - ENVELOPE OF TIME (English lyrics Byrds style)-Label:PAN Reissue of this album by progrock project from Norway. Great songs English lyrics and tuned in the style of Byrds. CD $12 SKU:19684

MCDONALD,DANNY -FIBROTONES (Aussie powerpop)Label:OFF THE HIP He might not mind the powerpop tag, but Australian singer-guitarist Danny McDonald's output is nowhere near insubstantial. In fact, recent efforts put more celebrated counterparts well in the shade. Danny's a storyteller, painting pictures of rural and beachside Aussie life in a way that few can equal. For the most part, it's set against a musical accompaniment of hooky, finely-honed guitar pop or tuneful garage raunch. In other words, powerpop with balls. CD $6 SKU:18915

MEGATON - Gas Rockers (Extremely rare Mexican heavy metal from the 80’s.)-Label:DISCOS GAS Extremely rare Mexican heavy metal from the 80’s. Going for huge bucks elsewhere. MINI LP COVER CD $25 SKU:19441

MESA COSA - YA YA BROUHAHALabel:OFF THE HIP Mesa Cosa are a gang of rambunctious punks out to remind the world that rock 'n roll is the devil's music, and the devil loves any excuse to get loose. Boisterously uplifting garage riffs, mandatory-shout-along one-word choruses, anarchic noise walls and enough Mexi-folk flavour that summons the spirits of a possessed mariachi band covering the stooges at in a neon Tijuana dive. Mesa Cosa sing in both Spanish and English but they only speak one language - party. With the world in such a depressing state of affairs Mesa Cosa have determined now is the time to unleash a full album of their festive freak-outs. YA YA BROUHAHA is stuffed with sonic snarls and sly smiles, brimming with the raw energy that's made their gigs infamous (though you will have to obliterate your own tambourine for the authentic experience). From the jaunty jangle of Melbourne-pride anthem 'Sydney' to the brutal boogie of occultic banger 'Satanas' it's clear Mesa Cosa are out for a raucous good time and want everyone else in on it. They wander into darker territory with tracks like the unpretentiously self-explanatory 'Creepy' and murkily volatile 'Bad Blood' but whenever audio-anxiety levels are about to teeter over the edge Mesa Cosa never fail to explode into a triumphantly melodious redemption-riff. CD $5 SKU:18920

DUEL - Fears of the Dead (70s proto metal style)-Label:HEAVY PSYCH SOUNDS (ITALY) Featuring two ex-members of Scorpion Child, DUEL is hugely influenced by the darker sides of early '70s proto-metal. EXCITEMENTS- BREAKING THE RULE- (high voltage rhythm and soul floorshakers)Label:PENNIMAN After more than two years on the road and 200 sweat-soaked performances since the release of their second LP "Sometimes Too Much Is Not Enough", this third LP certifies that the big combo from Barcelona can do whatever they please: either caress you or kick you in the stomach-or both. The steamroller rhythm section is one powerful structure pounding under searing guitars, roaring horns and all reigned over by the voice of Koko that claws at their hypnotic gyrations with wild abandon. This new Excitements bag, as expected, is THE satisfier with high voltage rhythm and soul floorshakers and lease breakers-"Everything is Better Since You're Gone","Fire", "Hold On Together"-ripping spear-hurling R & B - "Chicken Picking" "I'd Rather Feel The Pain", "Did I Let You Down", heartbreaking ballads and mid-tempos - "Breaking The Rule", and "Take It Back" and and a pair of rhythmical postcards- a tribute to what once were the noisy streets of New Orleans ("Mojo Train") and restless nights in a Havana boarding house ("Four Loves"). HARRIS,TONY -THE TONY HARRIS SONGBOOK 1965-69(Garage pop novelty)-Label: LICORICE SCHTIK 17 songs blending garage, folk, surf, pop and novelty in a delicious energy drink. Anthony "Tony" Harris is the son of Jack H. Harris, the famous movie producer of the original 1958 science fiction horror film 'The Blob'. Tony recorded a pair of fantastic 45s for a Los Angeles-based imprint called Dee Gee Records in the mid-60s. The 'Songbook' LP includes these two superb 45s and explores a brief moment of time in his career for the record industry. Following two records on Triumph in 1965, he became writer-producer for the L.A. based Dee Gee Records till its end in 1966. Harris then started to break into the soundtrack biz. In 1968, he signed with the VMC label and Duke Baxter's 'Everybody Knows Matilda' became his biggest success. The A side of this album is dedicated to the singer and performer and the B side to the producer and arranger. LP $14 SKU:18506

HEAT EXCHANGE- Reminiscence(70S HARD ROCK/PSYCH) Label:OUT-SIDER (Spain) Remastered sound; Insert with detailed liner notes and photos, including an introduction by Rich Sheppard (After The Sabbath). Formed in Toronto, Canada, in the late '60s, Heat Exchange are known for their three fantastic 45s for the Yorkville label - released in the early '70s - on which they mixed hard rock with psychedelic, heavy progressive and funk-rock sounds. So, it's a major surprise that in 1972, the band recorded more stuff with the intention of releasing an album. But in the end, the album deal fell through and only four of those tracks were released as part of their 45s. Soon after, the band disbanded. Luckily, the band members have kept a copy of the master tape all these years. So, presented here for the first time ever are the complete Heat Exchange studio recordings, including their three 45s plus the previously unreleased recordings they recorded in 1972 for their never-released LP. Fabulous UK-sounding, heavy progressive, and psychedelic hard rock with top-level musicianship, well-constructed songs, powerful vocals, sax, flute, wah-wah, organ, and a solid rhythm section. RIYL: King Crimson, Jethro Tull, Samurai (UK), Web's I Spider (1970), Human Beast, Deep Purple. LP $18 SKU:18453

In May 1967 The Sunsets single 'The Hot Generation' b/w 'This Is What It's All About' was issued to co-incide with the release of the Australian surf film of the same name. Both songs were featured in the movie soundtrack. The film was screened, and scheduled for release was another single from The Sunsets, comprising two more songs from the movie. 'Animal' b/w 'Uptight, Out Of Sight' was prepared to be released in August 1967, but one way or the other, it didn't happen. TERRIBLE TWOS -Radical Tadpoles SPACE ROCK - Label:X RECORDS X! Records continues it's perfect batting average with the "Radical Tadpoles" EP. Still feeling the Piranhas vibe, but a little more space rock than jazz oriented. "Chinky Glass Eye" and "An Image Break" have some downright pretty synth sounds working against it (for it) that'll speak to the Dr.Who or Wendy Carlos nerd in all of you. Like some shortwave radio transmission interfering with yer stereo. Downright operatic in a garbage can prog-punk sort of way. "Nap Time" starts off with some grossly out of tune guitar squelch and fluttery keys that gives way to some epic grand scale madness akin to say, Human Eye. Well, damn....just buy this thing. Pronto. Oh yeah...that's not a locked groove at the end either. A top five single of the year, guarantee. 45 RPM $2 SKU:17366

English band Tomcats visited Spain in 1965 and they recorded this rifftastic and fuzzed out version of the classic copla song "A tu vera." On the other side, "Te fuiste" by Pamplona's Los Junior's is a spectacular mid-tempo driven by an imposing rhythm and an undulating organ of clearly lysergic reminiscences. 45 RPM $7 SKU:16675

TRUE HEARTS (FORMER JUST BOYS)-NOT TONIGHT 4 SONG EP (1980 ORIGINAL PRESSING RASPBERRIES STYLE POWER POP -Label:COUNTERFEIT RECORDS Terry Carolan was looking for a new project following the demise of his band, Just Boys. He had recently moved to LA to try and get the band signed, but unfortunately interest from labels never materialized and things fell apart. After auditioning and not landing gigs with such legendary acts as Badfinger, The Quick, Dwight Twilley Band, and others, he migrated to Houston at the recommendation of his longtime friend Gary Littleton. 45 RPM $15 SKU:18498

TWILIGHTERS -NOTHING CAN BRING ME DOWN (60s Texas garage psych monster) -Label:MILKCOW This wonderful reissue comes with a '60s styled company-sleeve and a postcard. Back on 7-inch, here's a brain melting Texas garage psych monster from 1968. 'Nothing Can Bring Me Down' became an instant cult hit when it started appearing on garage punk comps, and Pussy Galore and others bashed out their cover versions. The Twilighters recorded this sole 45 at a club named Mark VII, also the name of the record label. When the guys entered the recording space they only had one original song, the moody garage ballad 'I Need You'. Front man Jay White wrote 'Nothing...' on the spot, since the single also needed a flip. However, the result, a fuzzed up mixture of psych à la Hendrix and Cream, and '60s punk, was so exciting that it became the A-side. 45 RPM $8 SKU:18372

WICKED - This Diamond Ring (w LENNY KAYE!!) _Label:ISABELLE / BOMP BW / Spider and the Fly - Original pressing of rare Bomp offshoot label. This was found in the Bomp warehouse recently, but nobody knew what it was, including Google! I sent out an e mail to all my record geek friends and to my surprise, even the best of the best werent really sure, altho one said he thought it might be Lenny Kaye. Fortunately, I know Lenny, and sent him an e mail. He replied within minutes to my plea for assistance identifying the record... as follows.
"Ah, record geeks r us... Anyway, the Wicked was myself, Andy Paley, Eric Rose(nfeld, once lead guitarist of the Sidewinders, Andy's Boston group), and though I can't be sure cause I only remember a bit of the session, possibly Eric Lindgren (later of the Space Negroes etc.) It is, of course, a continuation of the "Spider and the Fly" saga with begins with Bobby Christian and the Allen Sister's recording in the 1950s, that began a much-quoted allusion between Andy and me throughout the seventies. Then we found a garage cover of the song (actually, a somewhat takeoff on the movie "The Fly") by the Monocles in the sixties, and so we did our own version of this wacky novelty song to continue this one-in-each-decade tradition. Isabelle was named for the owner of the record store in Scituate, Mass. that we used to frequent....The flip was a cover of "This Diamond Ring" which featured Eric on guitar. "
Lenny Kaye…So, turns out this single is quite a gem, sure to be quite valuable in years to come. 45 RPM $15 SKU:11634

" Gertie Fox is a group of four L.A. guys who channel the twang of The Band and The Byrds with the modern unkempt fortes of legends like Built to Spill and Archers of Loaf."-- Fanatic Promotion"Simply put, Gertie Fox is a rock band. The 4 members of The Fox all add their own style to the music, but keep it basic and pure. They're more focused on tones and melodies than strucutres and time signatures. The vocal arrangements are usually intended to complement the music, which has a very strong 60's feel. The music they create expresses their moods and surroundings, which are usually optimistic views from their hometown of Hollywood, CA." LAST FM LP $15 SKU:19835

GRAVEDIGGER V - All Black & Hairy LTD ED of 150 CLEAR BLUE VINYL! (60 style Classic cave garage ) -Label:VOXX The one proper album the band released in its lifetime, All Black and Hairy is both perfectly named and perfectly performed -- if it's nothing but a re - All Black & Hairy LTD ED of 150 CLEAR BLUE VINYL! (60 style Classic cave garage ) -vivalist approach at heart, it's such a damn entertaining one that there's no cause for complaint. With its title track taken from the appropriately goonball back catalog of Screamin' Lord Sutch and its general snot-mouthed attitude from every last Nuggets and Pebbles selection ever, about the only thing missing are the lava lamps and garage stink. Saying the band uses the right combination of fuzztone guitars and echo and heavy frug rhythms is a bit like saying the sky is blue -- it's just one of those things to be expected -- but the sheer energy and abandon present keep everything from simply retracing the past to no point. Leighton's credit is for "lead screaming," and that about sums it up -- he's not so much singing as pulling off the ultimate teen-wannabe-Mick Jagger performance, only even more aggressively snotty. Ted Friedman's lead guitar solos with the right rave-up spirit and John Hanrattie keeps the core melodies going, while the Tom Ward/David Anderson rhythm section aims to get rears shaking instead of sitting. The album is half split between inspired originals (check out the concluding "Stoneage Stomp") and actual songs from the time, the latter resulting in fun versions of tracks like the Uncalled For's "Do Like Me" and Larry & the Bluenotes' "Night of the Phantom." About the only thing missing is the original studio recording of the band's best number, "It's Spooky," but anyone wanting a quick blast of '60s punk thrills filtered through later years could do much worse than to dig this one up. LP $18 SKU:16261

GROUP 1850-POLYAND(1969 psych legends) 180-GRAM (GATEFOLD)``Label:PSEUDONYM At last reissued on LP (180-GRAM AUDIOPHILE VINYL!), it's the third and final studio album from Holland's ultimate psych legends GROUP 1850! GROUP 1850-PARADISE NOW (1969 psych legends)RED VINYL -Label:PSEUDONYM This reissue is packaged in a lavish gatefold sleeve with the original cover artwork, supplemented by rare photos and liner notes by Mike Stax of Ugly Things magazine. Repress of 200 copies on transparant red vinyl. Recorded, edited and mixed over one long Red Lebanon hash-fueled weekend in October 1969, Group 1850's second album, 'Paradise Now', remains one of the high-water marks of European psychedelia. A wide-eyed, wide-open, synapse-electrifying set of songs, it sounds like the transmissions of a burnt-out satellite spinning through the galaxies of inner space. Group 1850 leader Peter Sjardin skillfully edited the group's free-flowing improvisations into eight cohesive, yet distinctly different tracks, part 'Saucerful Of Secrets', part 'Electric Ladyland', part Guru Guru, part Can circa 'Monster Movie'-era. The album was originally released on Discofoon, the label owned by the Dutch department store chain V&D. It has since become a highly sought-after collectors item. LP $22 SKU:19925

HACIENDA - Big Red and Barbacoa ( prod by Dan of the Black Keys ) (YELLOW VINYL ltd ed last copies ) Label:ALIVE BIG RED & BARBACOA is the second album by South Texas' HACIENDA, and like its predecessor Loud Is The Night (Alive 2008), it was produced by Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys. Recorded on the tail-end of a year playing clubs and festivals across North America, Australia and Europe (opening for Dan Auerbach and Dr. Dog, and more recently for Alberta Cross), this new album brings heavier grooves and flavor to the '60s harmonies sound the band is known for. The result is a blend of Tex-Mex roots rock, retro-pop and R&B that can only be described as South Texas Soul. BIG RED & BARBACOA captures the attitude of a band ready to throw pretension to the roadside and play rock'n'roll the way it was intended. LP $16 SKU:11391

HACIENDA - Loud Is The Night LTD ED of 200 on green vinyl ( Beatles style pop prod by DAN OF THE BLACK KEYS ) - Label:ALIVE From first note to last, Loud Is The Night is rammed with youthful rock and roll that flails around like a nun with a fork in her eye, raw riffs tussling with sleek 60s harmonies and intricate pop melodies to create something that's more than a little special. - Bearded Magazine LP $16 SKU:14389

HAUNTED - Blow my Little Mind to Bits -LAST COPIES of great 60s garage-Label:VOXX LAST COPIES One of Canada's most popular homegrown rock groups in the '60s, though they made no inroads to the rest of North America. From the English-speaking community of Montreal, the group was very explicit in their desire to emulate the Rolling Stones, and most of their 1966-1968 singles (as well as their sole LP, from 1967) were in a raunchy R&B/blues-rock style. Their most successful single, "1-2-5," gained fame when it was reissued on one of the first Pebbles compilations of garage singles in the '70s. All of their material was reissued in the '80s. LP $15 SKU:8001

HEAD -ST (Obscure 60s style psych Creem, Led Zep style ) last copies - Label:VOXX Unfairly, this album has always remained obscure, even among Voxx releases. Perhaps this is due to their style, which is freeform and creative, rather than the formulaic approach audiences seem to prefer. With influences ranging from Cream to Led Zep to little-known British bands like July, Head blew a lot of minds in Los Angeles in the early '90s with their light show and extended trip-jams. For their album debut, they chose a different approach: using all the studio tricks at their command to make a finely-crafted collage of sounds designed to flow through a listener's most spaced-out headphone session. But this long album also includes most of their live freakout favorites, and there are frequent moments of sublime ensemble playing. [12/92] Greg Shaw LP $15 SKU:2295

HOLLIS BROWN -CLUSTER OF PEARLS(akin to blues-based Southern rock and pure British Invasion-influenced pop -LEMON VINYL Label:ALIVE Limited edition pressed on LEMON Vinyl! Showing great range, from Bo Diddley backbeat to the stylized Soul of Hall & Oates, HOLLIS BROWN is an American Roots music band from New York City that rocks. The opening track “Completed Fool” busts the record open with a wicked bass line and introduces us to just one facet of lead singer Mike Montali‘s jewel-solid vocals. On Cluster Of Pearls the more jangly indie guitar of their past efforts is moved to the back of the mix and lead guitarist John Bonilla‘s growling lead takes control. It wasn’t until later tracks that I was “completely fooled” as they say, but the bands fusion of soul/rock/and alt-country sounds has come to fruition over their last three albums and is on full display here.“Don’t Want To Miss You” moves into a Memphismeets Muscle Shoals style sound that relies heavily on reverb and crying style vocals. It’s clear these guys are listening to the good stuff (Otis Redding, Eddie Hinton, et. al) and that listening is finding it’s way into the music. “Hey Baby” rolls into the album like a train going by, pinched notes squawk a riff, a rimshot drum beat skitters around some low end bass work and Montali howls “Hey Baby, make me blue, I want to make sweet love to you / Hey mama shine your light I kinda want you to treat me right” as Bonilla’s guitar takes off into face scrunching solo territory. IT’S PSYCHEDELIC BABY-#1 w CD A must-have for fans of Shindig!, Flashback or Ugly Things Magazine!-Label:MERLINS NOSE RECORDS (GERMANY) 130 full-color pages, glossy sleeve, plus a bonus space rock/neo-psychedelia compilation CD! A must-have for fans of Shindig!, Flashback or Ugly Things Magazine! Read what Vernon Joynson has to say about it: The first Country Joe And The Fish album Electric Music for the Mind and Body is one of the very finest examples of psychedelia and when Klemen found it as a 12-year-old among a pile of his dad's records and played it, his life changed forever. His curiosity led him to research deeper and deeper into the whole '60s music scene. He started a blog where he discussed private pressings and over the next few years, with the help of a network of like-minded friends, the blog evolved into the fabulous online magazine that is now It's Psychedelic Baby!. The name is perhaps a little misleading because the magazine's scope is much wider than just psychedelia. Its scope encompasses prog-rock, jazz, blues, folk, punk, metal & avant-garde music. Indeed, Klemen is a huge folk and jazz fan. Above all, the web site has a special focus on obscure and rare music. At the last count this stunning site contained over 500 interviews with a very broad range of artists and people connected with the music business, as well as lots of reviews and articles. He has done so much original research, located so many forgotten artists and even helped some to find record labels. What you have in your hand is the first hard copy version of this magazine! This first edition is primarily dedicated to Texas psychedelia. The state has a very rich and diverse musical tradition, but in the '60s it produced countless tough garage-punk bands and some of the most demented acid-punk records to come out of the U.S. in this era, as well as some seminal hippie-rock bands. Many of these were drawn to the attention of wider audiences in the subsequent years by the pioneering works of David Shutt, whose Journey to Tyme was a brilliant interpretative discographical guide to Texas 1960s punk and psychedelia and by Doug Hanners' equally excellent magazine Not Fade Away, focusing on the Texas music scene in that era. It is largely due to them and other Texas collectors that many obscure Texas recordings of the mid to late '60s found their way onto the many various artists' compilations of '60s punk and psychedelia that emerged in subsequent years. Now, in this new hard copy magazine, Klemen, assisted by other music historians like Kevin Rathert, has traced and interviewed many more artists and the magazine contains features about Powell St. John, Zakary Thaks, The Moving Sidewalks, Lemon Fog, Golden Dawn, Homer, Corpus, and many more. Be sure to read the interview with Michael Jensen (who was a member of the 13th Floor Elevators in the '80s) and shares for the very first time many stories about Roky and different meanings of some of the band's songs. In keeping with the sheer scope of Klemen's antenna, this mag includes many other features, too. He has tracked down the Zambian band Witch and has a fascinating feature (probably the first in hard copy) about the whole '70s Zambian music scene. He's also found Vyto (from First Chips) and there are articles on the Mexican Kaleidoscope, Bodo Molitor, Anonymous, and reviews of new reissues and new psych releases. There is also a fascinating non-music-related feature about "music as medicine." Read on... I promise you will not be disappointed. CD features tracks by: White Hills, Uncle Acid & The Dead Beats, White Hills, Les Indiens, The Oscillation, Get Your Gun, Farflung, Strangers Family Band, Jacco Gardner, Earth Mk.II, Amen Dunes, Aalto, David Greenald. Q65 THE BOOK PIM SCHEELINGS - Label:UGLY ThiNGS 208 pages with tons of rare photos, interviews and discography. The five original members of Q65 first banded together in The Hague in the Netherlands in 1965. Joop Roelofs, Frank Nuyens, Willem Bieler, Peter Vink and Jay Baar were an unlikely, often volatile gang of outcasts and misfits, but with their raw, unconventional music and rowdy, unkempt image they quickly built up a large and fiercely loyal following. Their first record, "Youre the Victor," kicked off a string of hit singles for the group including "The Life I Live," "From Above" and "World of Birds." Their 1966 debut LP, Revolution, sold over 50,000 copies, topping the Dutch album charts ahead of new releases by the Rolling Stones, the Troggs and the Animals. By 1969 it had all fallen apart, but in the few short years they were together Q65 recorded some truly extraordinary music. They continue to be regarded, quite rightly, as one of the great, unsung bands of the era. Pim Scheelings has captured their story in all its strange, stoned, comical, complicated, tragic glory-the drink, the drugs, the fights and, of course, the music-all discussed and dissected in frank, often brutally honest words by the surviving band members and their collaborators. This is the story of Q65: no punches pulled-the whole truth and nothing but the truth. BOOKS & MAGS $19 SKU:12284
