In his review of the Pebbles series for Allmusic, Richie Unterberger comments: "Though 1972's Nuggets compilation reawakened listeners to the sounds of mid-'60s garage rock, it only focused on the tip of the iceberg. Behind those forgotten hits and semi-hits lurked hundreds, if not thousands, of regional hits and flops from the same era, most even rawer and cruder. . . . More than any other factor, these compilations [in the Pebbles series] were responsible for the resurgence of interest in garage rock, which remains high among collectors to this day.COMP LP $145 SKU:17211

JULY- Second of July (Stunning demos by one of the most important psychedelic bands to ever exist ) -Label:ACME/LION •Digipack with 12-page booklet detailing the history of July and their recordings•Available again on CD after more than a decade By this time, anyone with an interest in psychedelia that stretches beyond the Beatles or maybe Strawberry Alarm Clock (at a pinch), knows who July is. Well, at least they know that a band called July put out a super rare album that is considered by many to be one of the pinnacles of the psychedelic era. There's no way to overstate the excellence of the album, with its eerie sound, Indian-influenced chord sequences, studio trickery (tape loops/phasing), and heavily reverb-laden vocals. But that’s not the story we’re here to tell. Even before that quintessential psychedelic album was made, band leader Tom Newman was experimenting with home recording equipment. In 1967, he installed basic recording facilities in the bedroom of his flat in an old Victorian house in Ealing. There, he and guitarist Peter Cook tried out ideas, coming up with many of the standout songs from the July album. The demos they recorded display the kind of confidence that Newman feels was lacking in the album proper (yes, the ultra- famous psychedelic classic album!) that they recorded in 1968. Let’s go back to the near-beginning of it all, to a flat in a Victorian house in Ealing, and listen in on demos recorded with DIY alacrity by a studio whiz, tracks which will change the face of psychedelia, eventually, after decades of obscurity. And they play like a buncha yetis as well...sorta like the Cheater Slicks only much better because they don't sound like a mockery of the music they claim to love. They also don't sound like the truly tiresome who just sounded like retreads of hoary old Sonics/Seeds/Stooges riffs run into the ground (all the while the band members pat themselves on the back congratulating themselves for taking part in such a "meaningful experience")...naw, these guys sound like TOTAL TRASH like in mentally-challenged thugs 1961 meet 1966 doofs at the Grande Ballroom in 1968 as they ponder the significance of the Pagans” CD $5 SKU:2044

LEFT LANE CRUISER- Bring Yo' Ass To the Table (high-voltage punk blues) - Label:ALIVE Whiskey fueled two-man frenzy of blues-driven rock'n'roll noise straight from Fort Wayne, Indiana. "Think of LLC as a mix of Hound Dog Taylor, Jon Spencer and Lucky Wray and the Palomino Ranch Hands. Kapow, kerpow!" - Doctor Mooney's 155th CD $10 SKU:7235

LEFT LANE CRUISER-All You Can Eat (high-voltage punk blues) - Label:ALIVE "All You Can Eat!!" showcases the band's high-voltage punk blues style they're known for and it is everything fans of their Alive debut expects and a lot more! Follow up to their acclaimed 2008 release "Bring 'Yo Ass To the Table," this new album was recorded in Detroit at the infamous Ghetto Recorders, and produced by legendary Jim Diamond. If you're not hip to the Cruisers yet here is the lowdown : hailing from Fort Wayne, Indiana, Left Lane Cruiser is part of the new punk blues scene and is formed by Freddy J IV (Joe) on slide guitar, and hoarse vocals, and Brenn Beck (aka Sausage Paw) on drums and assorted percussion (washboard, trash cans, cowbells).
"Left Lane Cruiser plays North Mississippi style blues like a lot of blues bands do these days, they just play it louder and harsher than anyone else, and that includes the North Mississippi AllStars - their sound comes across big enough to fill a stadium." - Blogcritics. "R.L Burnside, Seasick Steve, trash cans, hub caps, meth smoking two dollar pawn shop mics and all sounding as cool as that all sounds." - Organ. "This is the blues in their purest form, rough and ragged, rubbed raw by too much hard living and too many tough breaks." - AMG. "Left Lane Cruiser's high-voltage blues sound is downright nasty. Blistering electric slide guitar and leering vocals distill old-school Mississippi blues down to its rowdiest essence." - Casual Listening CD $10 SKU:10684

LEMON DROPS -Sunshower (Flower Power Midwest Psych ) DBL -Label:CICADELIC RECORDS Some of the best droning, fuzz-guitar laced heavy psych of the late 1960’s that’s what we heard when we played the first disc of this terrific double-disc set, compiled and assembled over the course of two years from master tapes. On the other hand, the label says: "The Lemon Drops were pioneers of a psychedelic flower-power sound in and around the Chicago suburbs in 1967. The mastermind behind their music was Rembrandt Records' owner, Reggie Weiss. The first song he wrote for The Lemon Drops was inspired by the effects of a LSD trip and titled 'I Live In The Springtime.' Long recognized as a classic example of psychedelic folk-rock, 'I Live In The Springtime,' has appeared on the Rhino Nuggets box set, Pebbles Volume Eight, Chicago Garage Band Greats, and many other compilations. In addition to the shimmering splendor of 'I Live In The Springtime,' The Lemon Drops left behind a great legacy of music during their brief two-year tenure. Included on this two CD set are many previously unreleased recordings (including two different versions of 'I Live In The Springtime') and a twelve page booklet with extensive liner notes and band memorabilia." We might also add this: great tracks by hard luck psychedelic band; the band's only issued 45 ‘I Live In The Springtime’, has a strong melody that suggested that better things lay ahead.... but as it turned out, none of the band’s other recording sessions were released on record until the mid-eighties on the Cicadelic label; the Lemon Drops recorded a second 45, the hard rockin' ‘It Happens Everyday’, b/w ‘Alone’, at the RCA Studios in Chicago, but it was never released. They then worked on an ambitious new project with tablas, flowery harmonies and numerous special effects the master tapes from this session are included here; by chance, the band played their tape to Buena Vista Productions who offered to put up $250,000 to promote the group: Obviously the band were thrilled, and they recorded a plethora of new songs in Chicago's Sound Studios during November and December 1968; ironically, these efforts too proved to be in vain, for the owner of Buena Vista died in his sleep and the deal was cancelled! Devastated the band split up for good. Any way you slice it (sorry!), this is a reissue that is well worth the money. CD $14 SKU:19792

LEOPOLD, PERRY - CHRISTIAN LUCIFER (60s father of acid folk) - Label:GEAR FAB Long lost LP from the father of Acid Folk. '...a masterpiece ... one of the most artistic, intellectually mature, and haunting albums of its era.' -- All Music GuideReview :Although his incredibly rare first album, Experiment in Metaphysics, was a sensational and dynamic slice of progressive acid folk, Perry Leopold took a phenomenal leap forward on the follow-up, 1973's Christian Lucifer. (It is a small miracle that the recording ever saw the light of day, since the studio at which it was recorded was sold and then closed, and all the master tapes from the sessions were erased and used again, leaving only a few mixdown copies.) The songs on the first album, while all strong individually, didn't quite hold together, but Christian Lucifer is conceptually a whole, impossible to imagine as anything other than what it is. Leopold's melodies again shine like slowly uncovered gems. Complex melodic lines and protracted vocal melodies stretch and build ominously, like the sight of a wise, enigmatic monk concealed beneath a woolen cloak. The religious reference is not an empty simile. If the songs on his first album came across as parables or ancient narrative tales, then Christian Lucifer is a collection of hymns, prayers, and litanies conflicted with the dualities of life, full of metaphysical depth. Whereas the first album stuck to the folk basics, this second album was stunningly produced. Gorgeous layers of acoustic guitars, bass, clavinets, bassoons, recorders, oboes, cellos, tabla, MiniMoog, and explosive timpani and bells gave the album a rococo-styled grace and wispy beauty, invoking everything from medieval madrigals to Bach and Vivaldi to Middle Eastern musics to psychedelia and the Doors. And yet, it is none of those things. There are imprecise similarities to Nick Drake's oppressive but beautiful fragility, the theatrical majesty and scope of David Bowie (who is quoted at the beginning of "Serpentine Lane," a dystopian reply of sorts to "Space Oddity," with Leopold's deep voice infusing the music with the same alien quality), and the visionary mystical musings of Merrell Fankhauser and Jeff Cotton's cult band Mu. The foreboding keyboards of "The Windmill" are pulled directly from "Riders on the Storm," but the album is an entirely unique and novel amalgam. There is a Renaissance Fair feel, particularly in songs such as "Sunday Afternoon in the Garden of Delights" and "The Starewell," harsh and pretty at once, and intriguingly arcane. Leopold was, in fact, a troubadour in the truest sense of the word, singing his music for whoever would listen. Ultimately, the album is a very individual struggle with the duality that lies at its heart and is the crux of everything humanity is and does. Christian Lucifer is both terrestrial and ethereal, both tangible and transcendent. It is unquestionably Leopold's masterpiece, and one of the most artistic, intellectually mature, and haunting albums -- released or not -- of its era. ~ Stanton Swihart, All Music Guide CD $10 SKU:18869

LIGHTNIN' HOPKINS -Shootin' Fire (1969 recordings) -Label:CICADELIC RECORDS (USA) Lightnin' Hopkins recorded over a dozen songs for the Clarity Music Company at the "ACA" Recording Studio in Houston in April of 1969. These songs ranged from new originals, such as 'Born In The Bottom,' 'December 7, 1941,' 'A Rainy Day In Houston,' and 'Stinking Foot,' to oldies such as 'Feel Like Ballin' The Jack,' 'Shake That Thing' and 'Shinin' Moon.' Since the 1970's some of these songs have been released on haphazard compilations with the bass and drums mixed too high, the guitar leads mixed too low, and excessive "reverb" in an attempt to make Lightnin' sound more contemporary. Now for the first time ever the original four track masters have been re-mixed without any of the extraneous studio misjudgments that marred previous releases. As an added bonus, previously unreleased recordings such as 'Movin' On Out When The Saints March In,' 'Old House Torn Down,' 'Mistrust My Baby And She Mistrust Me,' and 'Baby Please Don't Do Me Wrong' are included on this compendium of Lightnin' Hopkins gems. A large selection of never before seen photos, contracts, and documents rounds out this collection of rarities. The net result is 77 minutes of Lightnin' Hopkins in his prime "shootin' fire". •Taken from the original four track masters. •Includes previously unreleased tracks. CD $10 SKU:19764

LINDGREN, ERIK - Sound on Sound (Brian Wilson style teen pop)-Label:ARF ARF Long before making his mark on the independent music scene as a member of Birdsongs of the Mesozoic (among other projects), Erik Lindgren was writing and recording his own music as a teenage one-man band. “Sound on Sound” presents 79 minutes-worth of material he recorded in 1973 and 1974, on which he played almost all of the instruments. Lindgren was obviously heavily influenced by Brian Wilson's output in the late 1960s and early 1970s, and much of this has the sort of wistful, fragile, almost bewildered feeling of the work Wilson did in the years immediately following 1967. Other obvious reference points—they're mentioned in the liner notes—are the early Pete Townshend solo recordings, Paul McCartney, Todd Rundgren, and Michael Brown of the Left Banke. Lindgren didn't have the melodic brilliance of those composers… and these aren't exactly polished recordings, some of the rhythms betraying their origins as one-man overdubs. Still the collection has a basic lyricism that makes it engaging in its naivete. The CD comes with an extensive 12 page booklet crammed full of photos, notes by Lindgren, and a forward by his collaborator/Boston rock historian Eric Van. Lindgren has amassed a boat-load of eclectic musical credentials including his mid ’70s mod psych power pop band TNT, pre-Mission of Burma band Moving Parts, and his progressive ensemble Birdsongs Of The Mesozoic. As Lindgren says: “This contains seriously juvenile demo original material that I recorded in '73 - 74. I recently read a review which compared it favorably to Patron Saints, and it's musically all over the map. It's pretty amateur but musically fairly ambitious. CD $8 SKU:19627

ROBBS Before, Then & After - (3xCD + DVD-four discs total)-Label:WET WORLD RECORDS (USA) This four-disc set contains 55 tracks and five video appearances by the Robbs, covering the bands entire recording career. With so much music on offer, a hearty helping of band history seems to be in order. Musically, the Robbs were noted for their use of harmony vocals, and instrumentation-clearly inspired by folk-rock, bubblegum music, and jangle pop. Great stuff-and a real labor of love for the label.
Spotted by Dick Clark, the band was signed to Mercury Records in 1966, and moved to California to appear as regular performers on Where The Action Is during late 1966 and early 1967, replacing Paul Revere and the Raiders. The Robbs had some regional success between 1966 and 1970, at first for Mercury and subsequently for a variety of record labels. The Robbs have the distinction of placing the most singles on Billboard magazine's "Bubbling Under" chart (five as The Robbs, plus a final single as Cherokee) without ever once crossing over into the Billboard Hot 100 (ouch!). The Robbs were never able to garner a true nation-wide hit. Their lone album, from 1967, was compiled from the A-side and B-sides of their 1966 and 1967 singles, along with two new tracks. This self-titled LP made the Billboard 200 chart for one week in January 1968, peaking at #200, and the band was shortly thereafter dropped by Mercury Records. Upon signing to Atlantic in 1968, The Robbs pursued a more country rock orientation. After their two Atlantic singles missed even the "bubbling under" charts, Atlantic let the band go, and they were picked up by ABC/Dunhill in 1969. The Robbs continued to release singles for this label, with the usual regional success and some "bubbling under" appearances, but no national breakthrough. In 1971, the group changed their name to Cherokee, and re-emphazised their country rock influenced sound. They released one self-titled album as Cherokee, as well as the 1971 non-LP single "Girl, I've Got News For You". Both the album and the single featured the participation of Chris Hillman of The Byrds. CD $24 SKU:20194

GROOVE CLUB 1- Le Confisierie Magique (60s psych/pop rarities! ) - Label:LION Fabrice, 17 years old, is a minet, or to say it better, a mod from one of the posh neighbourhoods, the 16th district in Paris and such “golden ghettoes” as Auteuil, Neuilly and Passy. Fab’ likes to have his “ronron at the Dugstore”, as Dutronc sang it (an untranslatable wordplay on ronron, “cat food”, and a minet – “a kitten” – purring). Fabrice attends Henri IV prestigious high-school; his father, a businessman who made a fortune selling plastic flowers, and his mother, a former model from Jacques Fath, are never home – a cosy home indeed! With his Weston shoes, a slim-fitting suit by Renoma and his haircut modelled on those of Anglo-Saxons musicians appearing on French Eps, Fabrice dreams of Carnaby Street and the Sunset Strip.

He is not alone: there’s his sister Stéphanie, 16, who wears a fringe, a mock Courrèges dress, a pink Shetland pullover and white boots. Stéphanie reads Salut Les Copains and Mademoiselle Age Tendre, which both fuel her passion for Françoise Hardy, Zouzou, Twiggy and the Beatles. The Groove Club is happy to present twenty-two records that we dug out as a tribute to Fabrice’s kinky faves. We imagine those magic years 1966-71 (with two inclusions from 1976 & 77) to have been as you can hear it here — truly decadent pop-sike, as beautiful as the cathedral of Evry… whether it’s the arch-hippie Lolita taking us beyond the limits of pop music, singing songs which make one dream of Anicée Alvina riding her bicycle in a red dress… or whether it’s sunny and stunning, or brooding and tinged with sadness. And we sense that, paradoxical as it may seem, although we have imagined a parallel cosmos to the Grande Heures of pop culture, we are not far from the truth. Both the limited edition gatefold 2xLP and the CD version are chock full of information, sharing Fabrice’s story, as well as providing information about all of the tracks on this painstakingly curated volume of our celebrated Groove Club series. Popisme fantastique! COMP CD $10 SKU:13277

GROOVE CLUB 2- VA Cambodia Rock Spectactular 70s rock w 36 page booklet w photos -Label:LION Packaged in a deluxe casebook with a 36-page booklet filled with rare photos and the heart-wrenching stories of the most beloved artists in the Khmer Rock movement . Most of these tracks were recorded live, with traditional instruments finding a place alongside any keyboards or guitars that could be found. And yet, it was these experiments of Khmer rock musicians which transformed the nightlife of the Cambodian capital, Phnom Penh—and which many years later have seduced countless listeners around the world with their groovy sound. Alas, in 1975 came an entirely different type of transformation: the rise to power in Cambodia of the fanatical, anti-Western Khmer Rouge, led by Pol Pot. Within roughly four years, implementing their “concept of Year Zero,” Pot and his regime were responsible for the deaths of an estimated two million Cambodians, many in the notorious “killing fields.” Even the most famous and beloved Khmer musicians could not escape. Sinn Sisamouth (“the Emperor of Khmer Music”), Ros Sereysothea (“The Golden Voice of the Royal Capital”), and Pan Ron—all featured on this collection—met their deaths at the hands of the Khmer Rouge. Cambodian rock music is (rightfully) adored in Cambodia. The music is wild and anarchic, rhythmic and undulating (in an “Ethiopiques” way, we’d say), or sweet and lyrical, but always moving, and with that deep soulfulness (regardless of actual musical genre or style) that singles out the best music. We have assembled what we consider to be the most definitive collection of classic Cambodian rock music to appear thus far—without the later overdubs that confuse the mind, without the artificial speeding up of tracks that often has marred compilations over the years; what you’ll find here are crucial Khmer rock tracks, made available in the best possible sound, assembled with love and respect for the artists who made the Khmer rock scene as thrilling as we find it to be. And so, without further ado, welcome to “Cambodia Rock Spectactular!” COMP CD $10 SKU:12985

GUILLOTINED AT THE HANGAR- Shielded by Death Vol 2 (rare and raging punk r 79-84 KBD style) -Label:DIONYSUS In the spirit of the Killed By Death series, about two years ago, a great late 70s, early 80s comp called Shielded by Death appeared on Germany’s Incognito label. Compiler Keith Grave has come up with yet another collection of rare and raging punk rock from ’79 through ’84 from Connecticut and Western Massachusetts. Bacchus Archives presents present 20 tracks of primal American punk, featuring some names you might have heard of (Jack Tragic, Chronic Disorder, 8th Route Army, The Foreign Objects) and, unless you lived in the region we’ve focused on, may not have heard of. REMBRANDT RECORDS STORY- OPEN UP YOUR MIND 1966-67 - PLUS+ 7 (60s garage psych) - Label:BREAK-A-WAY REMBRANDT Records, a Chicago based Garage and Psychedelic label of the sixties. After the first release by the Nite-Owls failed to chart, Rembrandt Records’ owner Reggie Weiss moved in a different direction. His next release, “Open Up Your Mind” by the Nuchez, merged pop with psychedelic music. The song was based on an LSD trip and response to the single was positive. Soon other psych and psych-pop singles were issued by The Circus, The Nickel Bag, and Monday’s Children. Cash Box magazine began plugging Rembrandt Records during the fall of 1966. By 1967, Weiss was devoting all of his time to promoting a high-school band called The Lemon Drops. He wrote another LSD inspired song titled “I Live In The Springtime” for the band. Unfortunately, the single was unable to chart, even regionally. Over the ensuing decades though, the reputation of The Lemon Drops, The Nuchez, The Nite-Owls and other Rembrandt artists has grown immeasurably. This compilation contains the most important singles sides issued on Rembrandt Records between 1966-1967, plus a number of essential previously unreleased versions that are appearing for the first time ever on vinyl. The fourteen recordings on this album make it apparent that Rembrandt Records was way ahead of its time when these treasures from the psychedelic 60’s were recorded. First 500 copies with 7" Single incl. two unreleased 1967 first time on vinyl recordings by the Nite-Owls. COMP LP $17 SKU:16555

LEOPOLD, PERRY - Experiments in Metaphysics(70s hippie artifact)Label:GEAR FAB Experiment in Metaphysics is one of the rarest and most sought-after artifacts of the hippie era. Recorded live during a five-hour session in the basement of a shoe-repair shop in June of 1970, most of the 300 original copies of Experiment in Metaphysics were simply given away in one afternoon, yet, inexplicably, bootleg copies of the album later sprang up half-way around the world. The reason for the album's staying power is apparent: the music is gorgeous, first-rate progressive folk. In fact, Side Two of the original LP's label was given the title "Acid-Folk" (the other side was called "Kommercial"), probably one of the very first uses of that term. Perry Leopold creates a proto-gothic ambience full of dark and brooding imagery that is much less cartoonish than most of what passes as "acid," while maintaining that music's visceral punch. Like much of the youth countercultural scene of the times, Leopold can occasionally give into mystical pretentiousness. Experiment in Metaphysics has moments -- namely the spoken-word monologue in the middle of the mostly stellar opening cut, "The Absurd Paranoid" -- of philosophical meandering. Still, even those moments maintain a period charm. Experiment in Metaphysics is exquisitely intelligent and forward-looking. Leopold's mood is much more pious than most music that came out of the psychedelic era, and, indeed, extreme piety tends to be a product of youth, yet there is something aged and wise about Leopold's music. The "Kommercial" side, cryptically subtitled "SMOKE," is conceptually bleak, and after "The Absurd Paranoid," it takes on a much more palpable quality, grounded in experience ("Cold in Philadelphia" and the gorgeous "The 35th of May"). The "Acid-Folk" side (subtitled "DROP") opens with the stark, multi-part title track. Each of the three songs in this section is a virtual mini-suite, with the closing cut, "The U.S.S. Commercial," standing as the album's magnum opus. Experiment in Metaphysics shows some truly progressive and experimental songwriting, even for the time period. Each song, even the instrumental cuts, feels like a story, with beginnings and endings and all kinds of interesting ideas and storylines sandwiched in between. The album is a relic that has not lost one iota of its power. ~ Stanton Swihart CD $10 SKU:7949

What makes it better than so many 'cover' LPs is that rather than just looking at one act - Link Wray or Sam The Sham, for example - where the choice can get a bit thin, there is an opening up and the opportunity to cover one band's best song. And there are a lot of best songs on this brilliant record. I'd love to hear all the originals COMP LP $10 SKU:14773

The artists compiled on this collection translate the air of unrestrained abandon transported by the newly emerging popular genres into their own, locally flavored idiom: Teenage Beat and Garage Rock made in Austria, 1964-1970. Presenting internationally operating epigones of Austrian underground sound of the 1960s (THE SLAVES, THE GAMBLERS) alongside recently re-discovered trailblazers of independent production (THE LOST GENERATION, THE EARLS), 'Schnitzelbeat Vol. 2' is the first compilation of its kind to pay respect to the wilder side of home-grown Austrian teenage sound of the 1960s in all its diversity. You'll find instro rock smashers, beat ballads, straight-up rhythm'n'blues pieces, jangling, folksy harmonies, savage proto-punk blowouts, and, of course, the off-the-wall appropriations of well-known international beat hits that often provided ambitious amateurs with the jump-start they needed to get their own sound up and running.
