BROWN ACID- THE SIXTH TRIP (HEAVY ROCK FROM THE UNDERGROUND COMEDOWN'- Label:RIDING EASY 'HEAVY ROCK FROM THE UNDERGROUND COMEDOWN' - For the sixth lysergic journey, Riding Easy Records and Permanent Records have assembled 11 heavy slabs of obscure psychedelic rock/proto metal again. And as usual, the tracks from these impossibly rare records have all been fully cleared through the artists themselves. COMP CD $10 SKU:19880

BROWN ACID- THE SIXTH TRIP -HEAVY ROCK FROM THE UNDERGROUND COMEDOWN-Label:RIDING EASY 018 collection, the sixth installment in this popular series. Six volumes worth of licensed tracks released in just three years: doing the Dark Lord's work isn't an easy job, but somebody's gotta do it, so here is Brown Acid - The Sixth Trip, with more lined up. The heads just can't get enough obscure hard rock, heavy psych, and proto-metal from the late'60s and '70s! This time around Riding Easy present ten deep cuts from across the continental USA and one from the neighbors up North. This trip kicks off with an outrageous number from Gold out of San Francisco circa 1970. The band used to open their sets with this over-the-top frantic jammer which is absolutely mind-blowing! Delving deeper into the depths, Canadians continue to prove that they could bang heads with the best of 'em! Heat Exchange from Toronto released the rollicking ripper "Inferno" on the Yorkville label way back in 1968 and it's still thumping almost fifty years later. Some more examples of the mind-melting tracks on this platter: Missouri isn't a state that brought us a lot of heavy 45s, but there are a handful of outstanding tracks, one of which is the funk-laced anthem "Give Me Time" by Backwood Memory from Kansas City. Youngstown, Ohio, meanwhile, might have been the Hard Rock Mecca back in the day. Travis is yet another Youngstown group that aimed to get asses out of seats and out in the streets. Truth & Janey had their incredible proto-metal masterpiece 1976 album No Rest For The Wicked; released four years earlier, "Midnight Horseman" was a 45-only track, included here! Those are just some of the fruits of months worth of record digging and detective work included on this latest installment. This is the stuff that makes life worth living, at least until the next Trip. COMP LP $18 SKU:19879

RESTOCKS, DISCOUNTS, AND REMINDERS

HE PUT THE BOMP- VA W unreleased tracks by RADIO MOSCOW, BLACK KEYS AND BUFFALO KILLERS Label:BOMP V.A. - He Put The Bomp in The Bomp : Greg Shaw. CD Import (Vivid Sound/Bomp)Japanese release produced by Bomp records. Includes 23 PREVIOUSLY UNRELEASED songs. This is not a tribute album per se, but more of a remembrance of Greg Shaw and his unique perspective. We asked the bands to go into the studio and cut the cover song they felt was most in tune with the idea of the label and the result is a nice brew of garage punk, power pop and psychedelia that we think captures the spirit and sound of Bomp records. The Plimsouls and Lyres covered the Easybeats and the Outsiders respectively, the Black Keys surprised us with their rendering of the Cramps "I Can't Find My Mind", while the Dwarves and the Briefs sent their versions of punk classics by the Weirdos and the Zeros. We also got some nice surprises with the teaming up of Captain Sensible (The Damned) and the late Nikki Sudden for an acoustic cover of Iggy's "Kill City", Chris Wilson of the Flamin' Groovies joined the Barracudas to capture Rocky Erickson's "Two Headed Dog," and a Cleveland super group of sorts tabbed The Dukes Of Earls was formed with ex-members of the Dead Boys and the Stiv Bators' band. Also included is an amazing rendition of Rockin' Horse's classic "Don't You Ever Think I Cry" by Buffalo Killers (currently on tour with the Black Crowes), a cover of Spacemen 3 by The Warlocks, and much more. The Last even dug up for the occasion their previously unreleased rendering of Jonathan Richman's "Pablo Picasso" recorded back in 1977. There's a lot of cool music on this comp which we hope fans and collectors will enjoy.
"He Put the Bomp In the Bomp is an eclectic set that covers a fair amount of stylistic ground, but every track in one way or another speaks of a deep love for rock & roll, and it's not hard to imagine that Greg Shaw would have gotten a pretty big kick out of it." - All Music Guide"This tribute compilation features new recordings from the label's alumni or poppers-in-arms covering Bomp faves. The Briefs buzz through the Zeros' She's Just A Girl On The Block. Scuzz-punks will love the Dwarves doing the Weirdos and Brooklyn's Stalkers slugging through Chunk Of Steel. Graying garage gods the Lyres, Barracudas and Nikki Corvette all do Shaw proud with their tracks. And some surging psychedelia (Morning After Girls, Warlocks) attest to Shaw's undeniable flower power beginnings. But the most effecting surprise may be Nikki Sudden and Captain Sensible's springy acoustic amble through Iggy Pop's Kill City, as the now deceased Sudden echoes the fun in the face of infinity spirit that marked the best of Greg Shaw's endeavors. - CMJ COMP CD $5 SKU:6941

PEBBLES - Vol 1 (RARE 60s GARAGE PSYCH!- Label:AIP PEBBLES VOL. 1 is now a legitimate anthology of rare and vintage garage rock singles from the style's 1960s heyday. The point of the PEBBLES compilations has always been that they take it as given that the listener is familiar with the best-known works in the style, such as the Count Five's "Psychotic Reaction." So these tracks are filled with the more obscure and often downright unhinged, like the Elastik Band's "Spazz," one of the most incoherent and bizarre singles ever released by a major label, or the Outcasts' apocalyptic study of disaffection, "I'm In Pittsburgh (And It's Raining)." This makes PEBBLES VOL. 1 an excellent second step into the garage rock underground. Charity Stafford COMP CD $10 SKU:5054

PEBBLES - Vol 2 ORIGINAL 60s PUNK AND PSYCH CLASSICS - Label:AIP The opening number, "Makin' Deals" by the Satans, is a mid-tempo rocker featuring a vocalist who snarled "Can you guess my name?!?" two years before Mick Jagger pranced through "Sympathy for the Devil." "99th Floor," an organ-driven stomper recorded in 1967, features ZZ Top guitarist Billy Gibbons. TODD KRISTAL COMP CD $10 SKU:5055

PEBBLES Vol 03 THE ACID GALLERY-Label:AIP You may have heard Jefferson Airplane and Jimi Hendrix, but you haven't truly experienced psychedelic rock until you've heard the exploitation quickies, novelty records, and inexplicable dementia that fill this collection, the third volume in the classic Pebbles series of garage-punk compilations. TODD KRISTAL COMP CD $10 SKU:5056

PEBBLES - Vol 4 SURFIN TUNES - Label:AIP This special volume contains some of the best and most legendary rarities of surf music - mostly vocals, but with some instrumental gems towards the end. If you are a serious collector, or simply a fan of the early 60's California sound, this package offers a special treat for everyone! COMP CD $12 SKU:5057

PEBBLES - Vol 5 - 17 ORIGINAL 60s PUNK ROCK CLASSICS- Label:AIP This is arguably the best volume in the series. Top notch and consistent all through (but whaddup with Magi?).It is packed with classics and genre-definers and even if I have heard this a thousand times before it still manages to put a smile on my face. f you are new to sixties garage, then this is an excellent place to start. It is one of maybe 5 of the most important comps - it is canon and an inspiration for other canonical albums. SIXTIES GARAGE PUNK REVIEW COMP CD $10 SKU:5058

PEBBLES - Vol 6 ORIGINAL 60s PUNK ROCK CLASSICS- Chicago Vol 1 - Label:AIP The first of a pair of Pebbles volumes devoted to the Windy City doesn't feature such noteworthy Chicago bands as the Shadows of Knight. Indeed, the Buckinghams -- who scored a hit with "Kind of a Drag" (not the song that's included) -- are the only famous band on this compilation. However, the album does feature some interesting minor-league bands, some of which were from Chicago and some of which just recorded there (e.g., the Indiana-based Group, Inc.). Selections include the Omens' "Searching" (later recorded by the Pandoras and the Gravedigger V) and Nobody's Children's "Girl, I Need You" (remade by the Third Booth as "I Need Love"), as well as remakes of songs by the Lemon Drops ("I Live in the Springtime"), the Kingsmen ("Long Green"), the Hollies ("I've Been Wrong"), Gene Vincent ("Say Ma, Ma"), and Elvis Presley (a demented version of "Jailhouse Rock"). This is not an essential collection but it should appeal to garage rock completists with a particular interest in this geographical region. Note that the song list printed on the CD cover doesn't match the actual order of songs on the CD itself: the Huns' "Winning Ticket" is the third song; "Come With Me" by the Boyz and "Run Around" by the Cavedwellers are not on the CD; and the final track is a radio station promo. TODD KRISTAL COMP CD $10 SKU:5059

PEBBLES - Vol 7 ORIGINAL 60s PUNK ROCK CLASSICS- Chicago Vol 2 Label:AIP The second volume of Pebbles that is devoted to Chicago is similar to its predecessor, Pebbles, Vol. 6. It includes an early recording by the Ides of March, who later changed their sound and scored a big hit with "Vehicle"; a track by Gary & the Knight Lites, who later became the American Breed; and numerous selections from obscure '60s garage bands with some connections to the Windy City. While some of these bands may have been influenced by Chicago blues, they seem to have been more influenced by the British Invasion, Bob Dylan, other '60s garage bands, and '50s rock & roll; indeed, the album features remakes of songs by the Who ("I Can't Explain"), the Rolling Stones ("The Spider & the Fly"), the Animals ("I'm Gonna Change" and "I'm Cryin'"), the New Colony Six ("At the River's Edge"), the Vectors ("It's Been a Day or Two"), the Hombres ("Let It All Hang Out"), and Huey "Piano" Smith & the Clowns ("High Blood Pressure"). TODD KRISTAL COMP CD $10 SKU:5060

PEBBLES - Vol 8 Southern Calif Vol 1 ORIGINAL 60s PUNK & PSYCH CLASSICS- Label:AIP Southern California, and specifically the Los Angeles area, was one of the most active hotbeds of '60s garage punk, both because of its huge size and its flourishing musical and youth culture. Not all L.A. garage rock was great, and this 25-song compilation (much of which has appeared on previous vinyl garage anthologies, Pebbles included) is a good way to ferret out some of the better rare singles of the genre. Terry Randall's protest rocker "S.O.S.," the Rumors' "Louie Louie" ripoff "Hold Me Now," Byron & the Mortals' organ-driven "Do You Believe Me," the Dovers' Byrds-meets-the-Zombies "She's Not Just Anybody" -- all are among the best garage classics. Most of the rest is pretty good, if a bit generic at times. Lots of informative liner notes, too. RICHIE UNTERBERGER COMP CD $10 SKU:5061

PEBBLES - Vol 9 Southern Calif Vol 2 ORIGINAL 60s PUNK & PSYCH CLASSICS-Label:AIP Twenty-four Socal garage-band obscurities from 1965-69, more psychedelic in tone than the average Pebbles collection (though not every track is psychedelic-influenced). It's the first time on CD for all selections, a few of which had been previously unreissued. RICHIE UNTERBERGER COMP CD $10 SKU:5062

PEBBLES. THE SERIES THAT INSPIRED THE ENTIRE GARAGE ROCK REVIVAL! In his review of the Pebbles series for Allmusic, Richie Unterberger comments: "Though 1972's Nuggets compilation reawakened listeners to the sounds of mid-'60s garage rock, it only focused on the tip of the iceberg. Behind those forgotten hits and semi-hits lurked hundreds, if not thousands, of regional hits and flops from the same era, most even rawer and cruder. . . . More than any other factor, these compilations [in the Pebbles series] were responsible for the resurgence of interest in garage rock, which remains high among collectors to this day." THURSDAY’S CHILDREN- 1965-1969 - LAST COPIES Label:VOXX 200.052 - LAST COPIES Originally known as The Druids when they formed in Houston, Texas in 1964 they changed their name to Thursdays Children during 1965. The first 45 was quite an accessible punk affair, whilst their second and third were more British-influenced. After one final and disappointing rock and roll 45, drugs and the draft had accounted for many of the band and they regrouped as The Pointing Hand Group. This retrospective album on Voxx includes material spanning their career from 1965-69 with 45s, unissued and live material. This Out-sider reissue is taken from the remix version, as it was always believed to be “hotter” than the original pressing. WHITE NOISE SOUND- St- w Pete Kember of Spacemen 3 Ltd ed. of 200 on RED VINYL LAST COPIESLabel:ALIVE WHITE NOISE SOUND is the eponymous debut from the Swansea/Cardiff, Wales-based sextet. Completed with the help of Pete Kember (Spacemen 3, Spectrum and E.A.R) and magician Cian Ciaran (Super Furry Animals), the album is is a psychedelic dream-piece, and the realization of a band conjuring their own particular wall-of-sound -- at once relentlessly pulsating and blissed-out."In this day and age of ironic and increasingly obtuse band names, a band like White Noise Sound is refreshing. Like the heyday of generic foodstuffs, what you see on the label is exactly what you get here (...) WNS has been influenced by earsplitting bands from both sides of the Atlantic, including Velvet Underground, Suicide, Jesus And Mary Chain and of course the aforementioned Spacemen 3." - MOKB"Blending corrosive feedback, pulsating krautrock rhythms, floating vocals and wall-of-sound guitars, the track (Sunset) builds and builds into a perfectly judged ear-shattering, blissed out climax." - The Mad Mackerel"If you're gonna (essentially) cover Spacemen 3's 'Revolution' in 2010, good god this is the way to do it." – Arthur LP $16 SKU:14332

WILLIAMS, ANDRE-LAST COPIES of GARAGE SOUL CLASSIC Label:ALIVE One of the last living links to the heyday of dirty R&B, super-soul and first generation booty funk. And certainly one of the few left who still brings it like he means it, every time. He's as real as it gets." - Blurt LP $16 SKU:6449

WILSON, CHRIS, and the SNEETCHES- ST Flamin Groovies related power pop ) - Label:MARILYN Wilson, who was the George Harrison to Cyril Jordan's Lennon/McCartney during the Groovies' most British Invasion-inspired phase, is completely in charge here; along with three spirited live renditions of Flamin Groovies classics, "Between the Lines," "I'll Cry Alone," and, interestingly, "Slow Death" (which was written and recorded by the Roy Loney incarnation of the band before Wilson even joined), the album includes full-band remakes of songs that had appeared on Wilson's 1991 acoustic solo album Random Centuries, including an appealing, Byrds-like rendition of the winsome "If Wishes Were Horses." In true Groovies tradition, a faithful cover of a '60s classic, "Goin' Back" (a Gerry Goffin and Carole King gem that the Byrds themselves, among others, had recorded) rounds out the selection. Wilson is in fine voice, and the Sneetches, as always, sound great, but the arrangements tend to wander a bit too much; although the album is a '60s-vintage hair, over 30 minutes long, only seven songs fill that space, with only two under the all-important four-minute mark.
