Happy Memorial Day!

We’ll be taking MONDAY off, so we wont be here until Tuesday, but meanwhile here’s a big batch of oddities, saale items, and weird warehouse finds for you guys to paw thru.

We hope you are all going to be getting out of lockdown soon, thanks for keeping us here during these insane times!

Thanks for all,

NOTE - We normally tell you to drop the SKU numbers into our search to see the items. This time around some of these sku numbers are early, low numbers so the cart is finding other items that have some of the same numbers in common. But you will be able to see these below, along with a bunch more.

MANKEY, EARL- - Mau Mau /Crazy orig 1978 pressing! w pic slv.Label:BOMP/Exhibit J (Orig pressing of BOMP spinoff label, Exhibit J) rare by legendary producer “ In this one short song, there is enough pure-pop majesty to fill your week's quota of such grand music. Earle Mankey was a founding member of the odd new-wave 80's band, Sparks. Mankey has some serious production credits to his name too, including Concrete Blonde's first album.
"Mau Mau" begins with a jungle drum beat and a chorus of low voiced fellows singing "Ugachukka, ugachukka" over and over again. The song makes an abrupt left turn when Mankey begins singing about an African "...who can take his love any way he can, by the point of spear, by the point of knife" in his distant pop voice over a tinkley synth sound. Mankey builds layer upon layer in the chorus, with guitars ultimately building to a "Baba O'Rielly" guitar riff. You don't find sublime pop-rock like this everyday, but when you do, it's quite a treat. -- Doug Cornell, 45 RPM $5 SKU:4824

ALLAN DAVIE AND THE ARROWS - Arrow Dynamic Sounds ( Surf/Fuzz ) -Label:TOTAL ENERGY Starting in the '60s as a surf group, Davie Allan & the Arrows took instrumental
music a step further, hot-wiring their sound with the abuse of fuzz pedal. "Talking about pop culture, baby? Allan was an architect, a natural fact rock & roll artist. Allan's ax rocks, stalks and talks with heat, assurance and (believe it or not) a maturity that transforms the oft-shallow rock-instro into epic-scale slabs of rock & roll expression. Dazzling." - L.A. Weekly CD $5 SKU:2233

ANDERSON,THOMAS - Moon Goin' Down (great melodic pop ) PRE ALIVE LABEL - LAST COPIES Label:MARILYN "Thomas Anderson is clearly the greatest unknown songwriter on the planet." -- The Village Voice. Hailing from Oklahoma and raised on a diet of Jimmy Webb and Woody Guthrie music, Thomas Anderson's records have been described as fitting with the likes of Elliott Smith or Mary Lou Lord. "Moon Going Down" was released in 1998 and unfortunately fell through the rock'n'roll cracks. Anderson's music writings have also been published in such magazines as Trouser Press, the Bob, Musician, Rolling Stone and Creem. "When I started doing this, I wanted to establish up front that my allegiance was with rock 'n' roll and not singer/songwriters. God love 'em, but a lot of them are telling the same stories about dusty roads, country back porches, and missing you. Here I am singing about Martians. That's my thing. There are other stories to tell, and I want to be the one to tell them." - Thomas Anderson CD $5 SKU:2363

DREADFUL YAWNS, The- ST ( Byrds /Buffalo Springfield style psych, GREAT!) I suggest you follow them; this band has "class" stamped all the way through it. - Phil McMullen / Terrascope On Line (UK) CD $5 SKU:2336

DUNGEN- TIO BITAR ( Swedish psych ) Label: SUBLIMINAL SOUNDS Over the past two years, the profile of Swedish psychedelic rockers Dungen has grown at an alarming rate, from a cult studio project into a worldwide musical phenomenon. And on Tio Bitar, we're hearing the end results of an outpouring of success and support - one which has, for once, inspired the creative processes at hand to make something wholly new and original, yet remaining within the same sphere of emotions that fostered Dungen's three previous albums. Gustav Ejstes, Dungen's founder and principal member, made Tio Bitar (translated, "Ten Pieces") - a bracing display of psychedelic rock, presented with a bright, avid confidence largely by himself, with the assistance of guitarist Reine Fiske. Gustav wrote the songs, and played all of the instruments on his own, with Reine on many lead guitar and bass parts; his style of play puts him well within the top ranks of modern guitar heroes past and present. First pressing is a limited edition in a silver foil slipcase of 8,000 copies CD $10 SKU:6027

GORE GORE GIRLS --Strange Girls (Detroit all girl R&R!) -Label:GET HIP all female garage rock band from Detroit, Michigan, formed in 1997.The distortion and decibel level suggest punk, but the quartet’s sensibilities are closer to ’60s girl groups like the Ronettes and garage-rockers like the Kingsmen. Schumacher, who also plays with the Detroit Cobras, recently upped her resume in this arena when, as a member of the Reigning Sound, she backed Shangri-Las lead singer Mary Weiss, on her stirring Norton comeback, Dangerous Game. GRUPO AMIGOS- Paloma mensajera(1973 Pervian psych) - Label:GUERSSEN “Originally released as a demo pressing in 1973, this album by Peruvian band Grupo Amigos is without doubt one of the rarest albums from the South American psych scene. Only a handful of copies were pressed for the band members and needless to say, an original copy is impossible to find. The band was formed by some long-time friends of Saúl and Manuel Cornejo of legendary Peruvian bands Laghonia and We All Together. Manuel Cornejo played drums on the album recordings and Saúl was the session engineer. Influenced by groups like the Beatles, Byrds, Stones, Badfinger, Shakers and of course Laghonia and We All Together, the music ranges from terrific guitar psych-rock like 'Dirty Girl' (which sounds like an outtake from Laghonia's first album) to British sounding pop-psych ('Mr. Taylor's Train,' ‘Psychiatrist’), harmony pop á la Byrds on 'Looking for home,’ a few rocking tunes and some beautiful mid-tempo numbers which show their We All Together influence. On this Guerssen reissue, you'll find the complete recordings of Grupo Amigos, including their only album and a killer non-LP 45 recorded the same year. Features an insert with liner notes and rare pictures. Taken from the original master tapes, and limited to 500 copies only GW PICK IMPORT CD $12 SKU:7557

HARD ON’s Very Exciting (Motorhead meets the Beachboys)LAST ONES! Label:BOMP Records Called "Motorhead meets the Beachboys" and the "Motorhead Archies of your dreams". Yes, that's right. This is their second new album on the Chatterbox label since their return, licensed for US release by Bomp.
ALL MUSIC REVIEW

And for some, the endless series of punk revivals means...fun. And not the kind the Algonquin Round Table went on about. Guitarist Blackie, bassist Ray, and newish drummer Pete went into a studio again and proceeded to do exactly what they love doing, which is of course why Very Exciting! is such a fun album. If you don't like catchy punk-pop in any version, never mind and steer clear, but otherwise this is grand, ridiculous, and just wanky enough (after all, what else to call the chugging solos and the like in "Sunny," the winningly sung kickoff to the whole thing?). The idea of the Hard-Ons being reflective may cause bemusement in some corners, but it's the easygoing singing on songs like "Killing Me" and "Caravan Man" and the high harmonies on "Olympic Diver" and "Race Track" that gives the band a great reason to keep on keeping on. Not that Blackie can't be as blunt and brutal as needed -- the grindcore metal parody kicking off "Cat's Got Your Tongue" may be a bit late, but dang if it isn't hilarious anyway (and making the rest of the song a merry singalong is all the more fun). Then there's the rather foul-mouthed trading off of numbers on "Race Track," its own form of a cappella goodness. Calling one song "Punk Police" and making it a merry trashing of the "self-righteous" title characters may not be as political as the Dead Kennedys' "Nazi Punks Fuck Off," but clearly the sentiment is the same. Best song title, even if the sentiments aren't universally agreed with? "(Everytime I Hear) Techno (I Pray for Death)" -- though logically the band follows that up with "Breakfast Caramel," a sweet motorik/new wave chug that's perfectly danceable too. CD $10 SKU:2335

HEATHCLIFF, JUSTIN- ST (70s paisley pop psych) - Label:WORLD PSYCHEDELIA "Long before attaining fame as a soundtrack composer and new age artist, Osamu Kitajima adopted a sufficiently Anglo pseudonym and released this amazing homage to British pop-psychedelia in 1971. Issued by Warner Bros. in Japan only, the LP has unsurprisingly climbed skywards in price ever since, and only a cave dweller could miss the faithful nods to Syd, Marc, John, Paul, George and Ringo in the original compositions and English lyrics. Osamu's ability around a studio was evident even then and the choice of genre to lovingly imitate predated the whole retro/'paisley' psych movement by about ten or fifteen years." CD $10 SKU:5970

INSAINTS - Sins Of Saints- LAST COPIES PUNK!Label:DISASTER Records There was a time when punk was dangerous, and this album is a reminder of this lost era. This is a 20 track anthology of hardcore/street-punk rock from the late '80s, early 90's, by this legendary San Francisco band. Led by now-deceased fetish model/dominatrix MARIAN ANDERSON on vocals, and with DANIEL DELEON (CALAVERA, the DEEP EYNDE) on guitar, the INSAINTS pushed the punk rock envelope further than any other artist before or since. MARIAN sexual stage antics has become the stuff of legends, but the INSAINTS were also a great band, and this album proves it. “This twenty track anthology, varying between hardcore and pop punk, consists of the band's '93 studio sessions, their double seven inch split with the Diesel Queens, demos and some live material from '90 and '92. The Insaints were one of the Bay Area's most infamous punk bands of the last ten to fifteen years and offered a raw soundtrack to the sad, desperate, and often violent realities of inner-city life and childhood abuse, which became codified as redemption when "play acted" onstage by lead singer Marian Anderson during their live shows. Not for the easily offended. You've been warned. Rest in peace, sweetheart. - Dave Negative / Amoeba review CD $5 SKU:4467

And they play like a buncha yetis as well...sorta like the Cheater Slicks only much better because they don't sound like a mockery of the music they claim to love. They also don't sound like the truly tiresome who just sounded like retreads of hoary old Sonics/Seeds/Stooges riffs run into the ground (all the while the band members pat themselves on the back congratulating themselves for taking part in such a "meaningful experience")...naw, these guys sound like TOTAL TRASH like in mentally-challenged thugs 1961 meet 1966 doofs at the Grande Ballroom in 1968 as they ponder the significance of the Pagans” CD $20 SKU:2044

MATEO, EDUARDO- Mateo Solo Bien Se Lame (1972 Uruguay Nick Drake style ) - Label:LION From its first moments, the music is lilting, poetic, intimate, in turns life-affirming and melancholic, with pulsating percussion backed by unheard-of guitar chords and tunings (perhaps the reason for the frequent Caetano Veloso and Nick Drake comparisons); it is an album that sounds, simply put, honest. The record was released at the end of 1972 in both Argentina and Uruguay, and was received from that first moment as a classic in those countries, a position it still occupies today." CD $10 SKU:5752

MCKAY- Into You ( rare private press 70’s rock ) -Label:LION Artist-released master-tape reissue of extremely rare private press LP from Indianapolis (1978); "Low-key rural melodic guitar rock with Ray Pierle. excellent songwriting and musicianship" (Ron Moore, Underground Sounds); the album is very good heavy 1970’s sounding tracks in a CSNY vein, with adjectives applied by others that include: "weed-burner", "west coast", and "fluid leads; sixteen bonus tracks issued here for the first time are from the same era and of consistent quality both sonically and musically. REICHEL & MACHINES, ACHIM - AR 3- (70s Legendary underground freak Label:GERMANOFON If this album wasn't made in Germany and was entirely instrumental, one could easily mistake it as a "psychedelic/space rock" album, because it's made up of mostly kosmiche, spacey jams. SHIVAS-WHERE HAVE YOU GONE TO?(60s Seeds/Elevators style)Label:WORLD IN SOUND Authentic '60s Psychedelic Rock since a few years celebrates a strong international revival, and brings up lots of young but only a few talented bands - THE SHIVAS - are both! Basically you hear on this album influences of Velvet Underground, Doors, Seeds or 13th Floor Elevators. These four teenagers present a very remarkable debut album feat. 13 original songs of 69 min. running time -long-but truly a varietive album with interesting surprises to take you on a colourful journey (contains 8p. col. booklet)! Bandleader Jared Wait-Molyneux presents his ideas of fresh "alive" Sound combined with a (poetical, mystic or political) message through his characteristic vocals, skilful and emotional guitar playing; but also using "exotic" instruments such as Sitar, Piano, Organ, Harmonica and Mandolin to give it a kind of Beatles "Sgt. Pepper" feeling. The song "Love" can be heard on Trip In Time Vol.2 / Psychedelic Rock Reflections and was released in Germany. (For World In Sound insiders: "Seems..history is repeating!" Not just the name, artwork and musicians-age remind of the ultra-legendary 60s heavy-psych group MYSTIC SIVA - the Shivas seem to be the closest musical reincarnation too!) - 40 years later - TODAY - is the time to watch out for the new "psychedelic-rock" generation, the Shivas are ready to blow your minds! IGL ROCK STORY - VA PART 1 ( Iowa 60s garage pop ) - Label:ARF ARF IGL is an acronym for the Iowa Great Lakes Recording Studio, the first one in that state. When the studio/record label scored big with Dee Jay and the Runaways' "Peter Rabbit" (included here along with other early tracks by the group) after leasing it to a major label, the bands came from all over the state and beyond, hoping lightning would strike for them too. On this sumptuous collection of 31 tracks we hear the first fruits of such studio recordings, capturing the more notable bands from 1965 to 1967. The IGL studio had a crude, echoey sound that made drums sound enormous and vocals reverberate all over the place, but as a scrapbook of the studio's early days and Iowa's mid-'60s output, this collection is invaluable. Cub Koda, All Music Guide COMP CD $14 SKU:5694

DEAD BOYS - Younger, Louder & Snottier ( Rough mixes from 78 ) LAST ONES! Label:BOMP Records YOUNGER, LOUDER AND SNOTTIER is a collection of rough mixes of the 10 tracks from the Dead Boys' classic 1978 debut, YOUNG, LOUD AND SNOTTY, in the same order as the original release. ...Amazingly, these rough mixes are even louder and snottier than the LP.
"Sonic Reducer" in particular has a corrosive edge to it that makes this dead-on punk classic even more powerful than it had been before. While some of the other tracks are less notably altered, there's a freshness to these sloppier takes that makes YOUNGER, LOUDER AND SNOTTIER not only an impressive complement to the original, but possibly its superior.
Recorded at Electric Lady Studios in March 1977 Includes liner notes by Cheetah Chrome. Dead Boys: Stiv Bators (vocals); Jimmy Zero, Cheetah Chrome (guitar); Jeff Magnum (bass guitar); Johnny Blitz (drums).
Liner Note Authors: Charles M. Young; Stiv Bators; Cheetah Chrome.

SS-20 -Dream Life. (rare Voxx 60s style psych ) LAST COPIES - Label:VOXX rare early BOMP release nearly out out print,
Put together Bruce Wagner, an amazingly nuanced guitarist terminally influenced by '60s psychedelic rock, with Madeline Ridley, a goth queen who prayed to Jim Morrison and Syd Barrett almost as often as she slit her own wrists, throw in ace drummer David Winogrond (Skooshny, Davie Allen, Sylvia Juncosa) and ace producer Gary Stern, add astonishing cover versions of "My Eyes Have Seen You" (Doors), "Penetration" (Stooges) and a brach of vampiric originals, and you have this sleeping gem of an album. Fantastic instrumental improvisation nailed to a mesmerizingly gloomy vocal presence makes for an album that, if you haven't heard it, you really should be asking yourself why... [6/86] Greg Shaw

Voxx caught the rebounding Sky on a four-song 1986 7-inch shared with soothing/scathing psych punks SS-20, whom the aging guru had first augmented/sabotaged (according to one's point of view) onstage during his unexpected resurgence in Hollywood in the early '80s, when he would climb up unannounced to join every single band of the then-popular garage contingent spearheaded by Greg Shaw's Voxx label and Cavern Club. Originally a kick, it quickly became a drag to the young Beatle-booted hipsters, and a band called Purple Electricity was cooked up as a stake through Sky's hollow heart. Featuring the McDonald brothers from Redd Kross and Primate Brian Corrigan on drums, the intent was to daze and confuse Mr. Saxon, as well as any sycophants still blindly following. Drawing heavily from familiar '70s metal tunes, the blatantly unrehearsed music of the March '86 show documented on Private Party is matched with a disconnected and distracted Sky, recorded in glorious walkmanorama. Just to cap off this travesty, all of the songs — including indisputable covers — are credited to SS Saxon. LP $15 SKU:2299
