SMOKEY- How Far Will You Go? The S&M Recordings 1973-81-Label:CHAPTER MUSIC (AUSTRALIA) Chapter Music presents the first ever collection of recordings by wild and outlandish 1970s LA pre-punk icons Smokey. Featuring cameos from James Williamson of The Stooges, Randy Rhoads of Quiet Riot/Ozzy Osbourne, members of The Motels, King Crimson, David Bowie's Tin Machine, Suburban Lawns, and many others, the Smokey story has to be heard to be believed. In 1973, two wide-eyed young music fans made their way to Los Angeles and were introduced by a notoriously touchy-feely road manager for The Doors. John "Smokey" Condon was a bewitchingly beautiful Baltimore transplant, himself no angel after spending his teenage years partying with the John Waters crowd. EJ Emmons was a budding record producer from New Jersey, already starting to work in small studios around Hollywood. Condon had marched in New York the night after the Stonewall Riots in 1969, and so by the time he and EJ created Smokey, they weren't about to hold back. Released in 1974, debut single Leather/Miss Ray wasn't just openly gay, it was exultantly, unapologetically gay, examining front-on the newly-liberated leather and drag scenes thriving in America's urban centers. The single was shopped around to labels using Emmons's industry contacts, but doors were regularly slammed on the duo. "We can't put this out, it's a fucking gay record, what's the matter with you," said one record exec, while adding, "it's really good though." Undeterred, they self-released five singles that span pre-punk, stoner jams, disco, synth-punk, and more, all stamped with Smokey's fearless candor. 1976 single and compilation title-track "How Far Will You Go...?" features guitar from EJ's studio buddy James Williamson, fresh from his adventures recording Raw Power with Iggy and The Stooges in London with David Bowie. Smokey even remembers a few mid '70s jams with Williamson, with a vague view towards replacing the rehab-bound Iggy as The Stooges' frontman! The live band played almost weekly at Rodney Bingenheimer's English Disco, with a band featuring 14-year-old future Quiet Riot-ers Randy Rhoads and Kelly Garni. Restored by Emmons from original master tapes; mastered for vinyl by Emmons with his own cutting lathe. With extensive liner notes and photos, How Far Will You Go? tells the story of America's greatest '70s should-have-beens, a band so amazing that the only reason you haven't heard of them is because they were faggots, and they didn't give a shit. AHBEZ, EDEN- EDEN’S ISLAND ( 1960 Psych before the term was even invented!)Label:CAPTAIN HIGH RECORDS (AUSTRIA) It is 1960. Rock 'n' roll has just lost a couple of its protagonists during this and the previous year. The time of the great balladeers has just begun but soon will run out, due to the new and exciting beat invasion. In the US mainstream, the tiki culture has reached a certain peak and is about to collapse, but still goes strong, and with it comes the so-called "exotica" music, a crossover between smooth jazz and swing, Latin grooves, and haunting melodies rooted in global folk traditions, plus weird sound effects that often create a spooky jungle or dreamy island beach atmosphere. See palm trees growing out of your speakers; witness monkeys and parrots having fun in your room. eden ahbez (1908-1995) lived a consistent dropout and hippie lifestyle way before the movement was born in the mid '60s. As a poet and composer, he wrote the hit tune "Nature Boy" that gave Nat King Cole his first big success in 1948. On Eden's Island, originally released in 1960, he approaches the field of exotica music from a different point of view, creating an epic concept album about a utopian society living in peace and harmony on an island far away from the modern western world as we know it. Relaxed grooves; easy-listening swing; Latin patterns; peaceful, dreamy, even transcendent vocal melodies; tinges of folk music from around the world; and a whole color palette of mind-expanding sounds, with narrated lyrics and eden ahbez's wood flute. A truly unique effort; highly recommended to exotica aficionados who, for example, love Frank Hunter's 1959 White Goddess album. Psychedelic music before the term was even invented. LP $24 SKU:16753

SAN UL LIM - THE FIRST LP (Gentle garage-psych with a dreamy west coast flair)-Label:GRANADILLA MUSIC (GERMANY) Gentle garage-psych with a dreamy west coast flair and tons of awesome fuzzed-out guitars... with Korean-language lyrics. Originally released in 1977, South Korean trio San Ul Lim's debut album sounds like the best psychedelic power pop and garage stuff you could get in the UK and USA ten years before its release. One of the most popular acts on the Korean scene, San Ul Lim had exactly this typical 1966 garage sound, with fuzzy axes and some thin but sympathetic Farfisa organs. These compositions were conceived between 1971 and 1975, and, with their heartwarming vocal melodies and gifted musicianship, are heavily reminiscent of The Zombies, though San Ul Lim play in a much more direct fashion. Their music represents a movement from early beat to heavier and darker garage rock, which finally shifted into psychedelic rock. Fans of proto-garage beat with psychedelic tinges from 1965 to 1967 will go wild for this album. Other reference points include The Flies (UK, pre-T2) and The Petards (Germany). A lovely flashback to the golden age of music. LP $24 SKU:16754

UGLY THINGS- #39 Brian Jones -Label: Two attention-grabbing cover stories this time... Brian Jones was one of '60s rock's most iconic stars -- and also one of its most maligned and misunderstood. BERMUDA JAM - ST ( 60s psych w. detailed background liners and rare archival photographs. - Label:STONED CIRCLE (UK) The Bermuda Jam's only known contribution to the 1960s music scene was released by Dynovoice Records in 1969, a self-titled psychedelic mod/soul crossover jamboree that, contrary to its detractors, holds delightfully unexpected highlights. Somewhat cruelly neglected and mistakenly overlooked in the past, The Bermuda Jam and their lone album have been assigned to bargain bins with an unjust lack of foresight. The history of the band offers an interesting glimpse of the local garage punk scene, with connections to The Gents and The Savages, both of whom have enjoyed retrospective cult status on compilations including some in the Pebbles series. Other connections include Sly & the Family Stone, Joe Cocker, and Pink Floyd, but name-dropping aside, this small Bermuda outfit wielded some of their own tasty magic for their one-off album deal in 1969. Infectious Hammond and psychedelic studio trickery with ample fuzz and wah-wah make for a thrilling late psychedelic entry that should not go ignored. This first ever reissue was digitally remastered from the original recording and includes detailed background liners and rare archival photographs. CD $17 SKU:16650

CHILDREN OF THE MUSHROOM- ST ( Rare garage 60s psych Fold-out colour insert with liner notes, interview with the band members, and rare photos. ) -Label:OUT-SIDER (SPAIN) Though they only released one 45 during their existence, Children of the Mushroom epitomized the psychedelic garage sound coming out of California in the late '60s. Formed in Thousand Oaks by Jerry McMillen and Dennis Swansen, they evolved from a mid-'60s teen-beat band called The Captives. In 1967, they became Children of the Mushroom, a name which reflected their new psychedelic sound and image. The following year, they caught the attention of a couple of young producers, who signed the band for a 45 release. Recorded in 1968 for Soho Records, August Mademoiselle/You Can't Erase a Mirror is one of the masterpieces from the first psychedelic era: feedback, fuzz, organ, and mysterious vocals. Soon after, the band incorporated a new guitar player, shortened their name to The Mushroom and started playing in a more heavy psych vein, in a similar style to Iron Butterfly. This retrospective album includes both tracks from their monster 45, with sound taken from the master recordings, plus previously unreleased tracks by The Mushroom, recorded in 1968. These are raw, lo-fi home recordings with lots of fuzz guitar and organ. It's the sound of a psychedelic band in 1968 playing free and wild, without any producer or record label executive telling them what to do. An incredible document. Remastered sound. Fold-out colour insert with liner notes, interview with the band members, and rare photos. CD $17 SKU:16348

FIRST CHIPS- VA ( 60s fuzz psych w liners and photos ) -Label:STONED CIRCLE (UK) At a time when musical shifts were almost a daily routine in the immediate aftermath of the 1960s, multi-instrumentalist Vyto Beleska decided to trawl through the archives of his own Clay Pigeon studios, based in Chicago's South Side. Assembled here are past recording projects that utilized some of Chicago's finest underground musicians, whose collaborations with Beleska reveal another chapter in the annals of psychedelia and garage. To mark the early work of Beleska and Clay Pigeon Studios, a privately pressed album was issued in 1972 in a quantity of 500 copies. Circulated locally, the Clay Pigeon recordings were sadly never acknowledged on a national or worldwide level. The time has come to give wider recognition to the inspiring and awesome sounds that came from these musicians. This is the first legitimate reissue of this retrospective look at one of Chicago's finest unsung musical innovators whose early recorded legacy boasts more fuzz, feedback, and psychedelic mayhem than any true '60s rock fan could desire. Digitally remastered from the original recording; includes detailed background liners and rare archival photographs. COMP CD $17 SKU:16651

JADE- Faces of (Ltd ed reissue of 1971 power pop sought after collectors item ) -Label:SHAKE IT Reissue of Jades' (Cincinnati, OH) tough-to-find nugget from 1971 - one of the most highly sought-after "Beatles-Impact" records among psych, power-pop and Beatles collectors. Pressed on green wax. Limited to 500.

Jade's Faces of Jade album is a tough-to-find Cincinnati-area nugget from 1971. Since being "barely" released on the original Cincinnati-based GAR Label, it has become one of the most highly sought-after "Beatles-Impact" records among psych, power-pop and, of course, Beatles collectors. After a bit of sleuthing, Shake It tracked down the members and are proud to give it a proper and awesome-sounding vinyl reissue of their sole pop-psych / Revolver/Revoler-esque classic. Highly touted on/in Acid Archives, Tyme Machine & more.

“This came to me with an 'underrated' tag attached, and I'm inclined to agree. It's late '60s Brit-psych/pop of the McCartney/Roy Wood variety, transplanted to 1970s Cincinnati, serving up plenty of innovation, fun and a fair amount of label money on hand. Opens with a dreamy psych mini-epic that recalls the second Fallen Angels album, the rest holds a middle ground between London '68 and the clever pop that Ohio would become famous for, leaving the listener to decide if this is a late '60s lyte-psych LP or in fact an Anglo-retro '70s trip. Lots of piano, 'Penny Lane' fanfares, high-pitched teen harmonies and unexpected studio tricks. One of the best in the style.” -- Acid Archives LP $17 SKU:16422

REAL KIDS-Shake Outta Control - 180-GRAM -Label:UGLY POP t's been 38 years since Boston's REAL KIDS debuted with the finest rock'n'roll record ever committed to tape, and now they're back with a long-awaited new full-length on legendary hometown label Ace Of Hearts and Canada's Ugly Pop. Of course, long time fans can always be excused some apprehension when a band of this vintage presents new material so deep into their career, but there's no cause to fret here. “Shake...Outta Control” is a fantastic return to form, a strong set of powerful, memorable and engaging songs that do absolute justice to this band's legacy. While some bands lose track of their own soul in forced attempts at progression, and others risk diminishing returns by simply treading the water of their earlier work, 2014 finds the Real Kids negotiating this path beautifully. Boasting both the raw energy and tough hooks of 1977 and the matured chops and expanded palette of frontman John Felice's “Nothing Pretty” LP, the dozen songs on this disc settle easily among the band's best work. Producer Rick Harte guides with an expert hand, integrating Hammond organ and pedal steel seamlessly into a full yet suitably unpolished whole, and the songs run the gamut from quieter but intense ballads like a definitive new “Common At Noon” and a sublime take on Jonathan Richman's “Fly Into The Mystery” to fast-paced rockers like “All Night Boppin'” (powered along by highly caffeinated barroom piano) and of course the instant classic title track, a high-energy gem anchored by the sort of classic Boston punk rock'n'roll riff that made this band's name. Culminating in an incendiary “Who Needs You?”, this is a genuine Real Kids record that will thrill new fans and old alike. Superbly mastered at New York's renowned Sterling Sound, the “Shake...Outta Control” LP was cut 100% analog direct from tape and pressed at RIP-V on 180G vinyl for an incredible high-quality deluxe package. LP $18 SKU:16354
