BOLDER DAMN- Mourning ( 60s gem ) -Label:SHADOW KINGDOM BOLDER DAMN from the U.S. is a prime example of how amazing a band can be, but yet virtually still unknown to a lot of people until now. Talk about HEAVY, this band was extremely heavy for the time of their debut release in 1971. They certainly challenged Black Sabbath in terms of heaviness. Their closing song “Dead Meat” would be considered some of the heaviest/proto-doom riffs to be heard back then. “Dead Meat” was an epic barnburner for the time. Even to this day that song still carries the same impact it did when it was originally released, much like the song “Black Sabbath”. For people that know more obscure greats like 70’s era Pentagram and Sir Lord Baltimore, this album fits right in with those. It’s a little more in the psych/fuzz heavy rock genre, but what’s not to love there? The album was re-mastered and the booklet contains a history of the band, lyrics, and old photos. CD $14 SKU:10975

DEBRIS - STATIC DISPOSAL (70s acid punk ) -Label:ANOPHELES The band were said to be high on acid when they recorded this in Oklahoma in 1975; not surprising then that the result is demented avant-garde proto-punk psychedelia, with modulators and synthesizers, a vibraharp (and more) utilised to good effect; the album is now considered a pivotal mid-70s effort from the American private press underworld, and as such has been hailed in Ugly Things, The Acid Archives, and MOJO (a Jon Savage favorite). And why not? It’s a record which has inspire bands from the Screamers to Nurse With Wound. Debris’ are now seen as one of the most important proto-punk bands of the era, too often snubbed by punk historians who don't want to rewrite their historical templates. This updated second printing features the original album tracks, carefully transferred from the master tapes, plus 40 minutes of unreleased basement recordings from the band's own Subterraneous Static Disposal office in Chickasha, OK in 1975-6. Detailed 28-page booklet has also been updated, and includes extensive notes which detail the band's own first hand experiences. LP edition is a high quality, deluxe, tip-on style heavy jacket sleeve edition of this acid-punk classic, with an additional two sided insert unique to this edition, pressed on black vinyl for the first time since the original pressing in 1976 CD $16 SKU:16775

DUG DUGS - ST (70s Mexica psych! ) mini-LP replica jacket - Label:LION DUG DUGS A heavy, explosive album, a record which captures the fever/dream humidity of flower children running amok on a July afternoon. Essential.! CD $14 SKU:12592

FOUR LEVELS OF EXISTENCE - ST LTd edition ( 70’s Greek psych, 24 page booklet, rare photos ) -Label:LION Slightly revamped second edition of an album that many people consider to be the best Greek psychedelic album ever recorded, a belief that would mean that the Four Levels of Existence LP would supersede albums by artists like Axis, Aphrodite’s Child, Socrates, and George Romanos. We’ll let you decide the argument, for there is no doubt of one thing—that this is tremendous hard edged psychedelic rock, originally released on LP in a very small quantity by the private Venus label in 1976. As band leader Athanasios Alatas said: “Through Nick’s musical quest, Mario’s sensitivity, Christos’ madness, and my thoughts, we create many songs, all characterized by a psychedelic music sound, Greek lyrics, and monumental guitar solos.” Since the appearance of our first edition of this album on CD, the excellence of the band has not gone unnoticed.* (see below) This carefully documented reissue contains the entire Four Levels of Existence LP, the only recordings they ever made. A twenty-four page booklet includes historical background on the Greek music scene of the early 1970’s, details of the band’s past written by Alatas, rare photos of the group, as well as lyrics in both Greek and English. This second CD edition is strictly limited to 1,000 copies.*As some of you may know by now, the guitar riff from ‘Someday in Athens’ plays a major role in Jay-Z’s single, ‘Run This Town’ (featuring Rihanna, Kanye West) from his chart-topping “The Blueprint 3” album. Just another reason for people to discover the legendary, fuzz-guitar laced work of Four Levels of Existence. CD $12 SKU:4339

"Their (first) 45 had two absolute masterpieces: ‘Gotta Getta Record Out,’ which yelps and shouts along like the best of the old Bongos or Jam or Feelies or somebody, and ‘I Don’t Want To Say No,’ which is the sort of white Motown that assholes like the Replacments could never get right. This is not a punk record, except perhaps in spirit, but it isn’t any worse for that."—Steve Albini CD $13 SKU:14882

JOE WITH THE FLOWER TRAVELLIN' BAND- The Times (60s-Yuya Uchida) digipack - Label:PHOENIX RECORDS (UK) Although post-Group Scene band Flowers were gaining increasing popularity in late '60s Tokyo, founder and guiding light Yuya Uchida was becoming increasingly frustrated that cult status was not translating into commercial success. Watching a rehearsal for the Tokyo version of the hit U.S. musical Hair, Uchida's wily gaze fell upon the Afro-sporting cast member Yamanaka Akira aka Joe. Uchida liked what he saw and heard so much, that he invited Joe to sing guest lead vocals at the next Flowers gig, and so impressed was he with the audience's response to the singer's opening number, that he knew a direction-changing discovery had been made. Gone was Flowers and in its place, Flower Travellin' Band emerged with a whole new sound and a charismatic and talented front man leading the charge, a relentless process that would see the singer become the sound of FTB with his career ascending as the fortunes of the band decreased. Eventually, the inevitable happened and Uchida disbanded FTB in 1975, after which the band's record label, Atlantic, offered the world one final, posthumous release in a greatest hits package, The Times, with the artist as "Joe With The Flower Travellin' Band" becoming the band's epitaph. Features the original LP artwork and includes the original Japanese insert. Digitally remastered. CD $9 SKU:13957

CD $10 SKU:12612

ALLERGIC TO FLOWERS- Garage Beat & Popsike - Part 2 1965-68 NEW LO PRICE! -Label:RPM (UK) "Part two of the first time thematic overview of West Coast independent label Challenge Records. The label hit paydirt in early 1966 when it scored a coast-to-coast hit with The Knickerbockers outstandingly energetic rave up 'Lies.' This riff on The Beatles sound could actually have been The Beatles. Its inclusion on Lenny Kaye's Nuggets set 'Lies' in stone as a all-time classic. Allergic To Flowers: Garage Beat & Popsike celebrates this and the other nuggets that Challenge issued from 1965 to 1968. There's The Brogues paint-peeling punk rocker 'Don t Shoot Me Down' -- the band featured future members of San Francisco legends Quicksilver Messenger Service. Also heard are more irresistible, rockin' and melodic high-energy gems by The Knickerbockers, the absolutely incredible psychedelic punk of Florida band We The People, the tough-as-nails Lindy Blaskey and the Lavells and the superb psychedelic harmonies of Fenwyck's 'Mindrocker.' And then there's the folk rocking and punkish sides recorded by Gene Vincent with Glenn Campbell, as well as The Jefferson Handkerchief's hippy novelty 'I'm Allergic To Flowers.' ORANG-UTAN - ST 1971 psych pop - w insert ,rare pix and liner notes by Jeremy Cargill -Label:SOMMOR Included is an insert featuring rare pix and liner notes by Jeremy Cargill (Ugly Things/Got Kinda Lost), telling the bizarre story of the band for the first time.
Orang-Utan was a London based band that was actually named Hunter. The line-up featured vocalist Terry "Nobby" Clarke (of psych-pop legends Jason Crest), guitar player Mick Clarke, drummer and songwriter Jeff Seopardi and bass player Paul Roberts. They recorded their sole album in 1971. In a bizarre twist of events, their producers/managers took the tapes to the USA, where they arranged a release on Bell Records under a new band name, Orang-Utan, without telling any of the band members. The album is a lost classic of blazing, early hard-rock with minor psychedelic hangover vibes, a twin-guitar attack, and waves of fuzz/wah, along with powerful vocals. Think Leaf Hound, Budgie, Bang, Sir Lord Baltimore, Hard Stuff... This first ever legit reissue is done in co-operation with the original members. LP $26 SKU:16062

OS TARTAROS-The First Portuguese Surf Garage Band -Label:GROOVIE In the early 1960s, when rock n roll started dying in Portugal, a new trend was already here. Hailing from the UK and headed by Cliff Richard, fast upstaged by his supporting band The Shadows, this would be the first British Invasion. An entire generation quickly fell under its influence and all across the country dozens of bands were formed, playing rock-based guitar-driven instrumental songs with catchy tunes that were often adaptations of traditional songs. Like the Killer surf garage tune 'Tartária', maybe one the wildest surf tune record in Europe in that era. Oblivious to what was happening abroad, the Portuguese press dubbed them Shadows-influenced instrumental bands. This was the context in which Os Tártaros were formed in an Oporto garage. Featuring Joaquim Gualter on lead guitar, Alberto Abreu on rhythm guitar and keyboards, Hernâni de Melo on bass and harmonica, and Eduardo Alves on drums, the band began touring the country, performing in associations, fairs, and festivals. The early 60s explosion of Shadows-influenced bands grew substantially stronger when The Beatles came onboard and also benefited from the charitable actions of one man, Gouveia Machado, the owner of a musical instrument store who let young people pay for their guitars and drums by installments. From 1964 onwards, with the advent of new influences and instruments, hundreds of bands followed, not just in Lisbon and Oporto but all across Portugal. Some of the tracks were included in the fabulous compilations, PORTUGUESE NUGGETS, this LP is more than a anthology of all their material, its a historical document from a band that ran against their fate in a time when playing in a rock band, under the Portuguese dictatorship, was like a crime. LP $15 SKU:15532

REINHOLD MOLITOR- ST - (Mexican psych ) SAALE - Label:VAM Official reissue of this ultra-rare album (Discos Zave LPL 163, 1969). Globe-trotting artist Bodo Molitor may have been born in Germany, but he’ll forever be associated with the psychedelic scene in Mexico and South America. In addition to creating the zoomorphic art for his own bizarre album, “Hits Internacionales,” he also created the psychedelic art for the Kaleidoscope album, for La Libre Expresion, and for his brother Reinhold’s solo album. He had this to say about the Reinhold record: “My Brother Reinhold came for a visit from Germany where he was playing with several bands. He was only 19. I knew Edghar Zamudio (from Peru) and one day he asked us to record that LP. Just acoustic—guitars and a banjo played brilliantly by my brother. I think we recorded the whole album in three or four days. I played some guitars and did some vocals as well. It’s folky and bluesy with originals some covers and traditionals. My brother sings and plays guitar and banjo, on some of the songs he wrote.” The Reinhold album is so rare, even with the connection to his more famous artist brother, no one seems to have discovered it… until now. Despite being from the end of the 1960's, Reinhold has more of an early-60's NYC Greenwich Village Cafe Wha?-ish folk underpinning. The best tracks have gravel-pated vocals in a vaguely Tom Waits/Joseph Spence sort of vein—really syrupy and quite excellent. Overall, a dark and morose vibe dominates; and we can all use some minor key laments, now and then, right? Limited editions (both formats) of only 500 copies, and available exclusively via Lion Productions and our friends. LP $19 SKU:15257
