ST. MIKAEL - MIND OF FIRE (80s PSYCH) -Label:SUBLIMINAL SOUND Incredibly enough, but very naturally, after 11-years silence heres a new album by this mysterious and legendary Swedish psychedelic multi-instrumentalist. S.T. Mikael spearheaded the DIY psychedelic rock/folk movement of the late 1980s-mid-90s, with a collection of albums that now fetches up and over $1000 on Ebay. During his long absence S.T. Mikael grew more secretive and reclusive, but all the while he was still writing music. Now that hes finally back heres at last a chance for the world to join in to his psychedelic world again. The music, stretching out in many different musical directions, has been done freely and spontaneously in an extremely relaxed and happy environment, where Mikael joined forces with Dungens Reine Fiske and Fredrik Bjorling whos musical expertise now also grace the grooves. These otherworldly acid tripper recordings now exists in the real world and S.T. Mikael, proves, once again, to be a gifted songwriter and an unconventional performer with a very personal ear for acoustics and an emotional honesty seldom seen these days. Folk rocky melodic elements flow with waves of heavy fuzzphase leads, weird detached haunted vocal echoes over the band and the whole thing seems to teeter on the brink of psychedelic oblivion. Not revival either but purely of the now. You do get the feeing that Mikael actually lives the lifestyle rather than just emulating it. His soaring vocals, surreal lyrics, fragile, folky melodies, heavy fuzz riffs, mind bending soul funk and penchant for the spiritual and mystical make this altogether a fascinating voyage that is so mind twisting, soul swirling, upper psychedelic that your third eye takes you on a joyride thru an altered state! This album makes your brain start thinking in those pebble splash pond mind circular expanding waveforms that people on this vibe await the returning ship their roots sent out to bring back the password to tomorrow. A homage to LSD which helped him make the transformation possible. This is part one of a suite of two separate albums. ST. THOMAS PEPPER SMELTER - Soul & Pepper mini slv replica (Peruvian 60s psych freakbeat )- Label:LION PRODUCTIONS (USA) & REPSYCHLED RECORDS (Peru) The first official reissue of this much-bootlegged classic South American psychedelic freakbeat album, recorded in 1969 by Peruvian band The (St. Thomas) Pepper Smelter. Perhaps the story of the band is not well known, but their achievements were great—and international: editions of their sole LP were produced in Peru, Mexico, Brazil and Ecuador, and 45rpm singles were published in Mexico and Greece. St. Thomas Pepper Smelter was formed by Gerardo Manuel Rojas on vocals and tambourine, Beto Tataje on rhythm guitar and lead guitar, Juan Carlos Barreda on bass and vocals, Carlos Manuel Barreda on drums and backing vocals (all from the famous group Los Shains), and Freddy Macedo on keyboards. Their first single was a cover of ‘Purple Haze’ b/w one of their own compositions, ‘A New Summer.’ The band then began to record their only LP. That album contains twelve tracks—six written by the band, and the other half cover versions. The band's music could be described as freak beat; in many ways, it is a preview of the garage /surf style of Los Shain's, heading towards the heavy psychedelic rock of Gerardo Manuel & El Humo. At the time, St. Thomas Pepper Smelter simply called it “underground music.” Gerardo’s voice is soft in the band’s own songs, and aggressive on the cover tunes; his guitar style oozes fuzz. The foundation of bass and drums by the brothers Barreda is very powerful and strong; and the songs benefit from the layers of keyboard played by Freddy Macedo. This fully licensed, hand-numbered, limited edition CD release comes in a mini-LP sleeve replica of the original album art; it also comes with a replica of an original poster; a replica of an original color photo of the band. More importantly, it includes three previously unreleased bonus tracks exclusive to this edition. Carefully remastered from the original master tapes and released in this limited edition of 400 copies, available exclusively worldwide from Lion Productions. CD $10 SKU:14479

STRANG, JOHN - SHAME AND STIGMA (1972 private press) Label:SEELIE COURT 380 copy limited edition first pressings in mini card gatefold sleeves, from Glass Masters (not cdrs)John Strang's sonic journey into psychiatric rehabilitation has been painstakingly reconstructed from cassette tapes and crumbling studio reels. Composed as a concept album in 1972 this could have come out on Transatlantic, but the deal fell apart at the seams, and the recordings have remained unreleased for fifty years. Charting the experience of mental disentigration and recovery, this may have been an abstract manifestation of the genesis of Sir John Strangs career swing into Psychiatry. CD $20 SKU:24932

STRANG, JOHN -THE MASTERPEACE (1968 private press folk rock) Label:SEELIE COURT 380 copy limited edition first pressings in mini card gatefold sleeves, from Glass Masters (not cdrs)A super rare privately pressed folk rock album from 1968 is now finally available on a bigger scale! The LP was originally pressed in a super limited run of 25 copies, which nowadays are obviously unaffordable! Sir John Graves, who after his musical career became a leading authority on the psychiatry of drug addiction, recorded this delightful, somewhat Donovanesque LP with two friends (Valentine Lewis Lloyd and Martin Farquharson) in Wales when he was only 17 years old. STRAY-Mudanzas (1966 hard rock prog)- Label:TALKING ELEPHANT Stray had a prolific career, yet managed to elude the fame enjoyed by contemporaries like Cream, Thin Lizzy, or even Mountain. Formed in 1966, the hard rock, prog, and R&B outfit comprised of vocalist/guitarist Del Bromham, vocalist/guitarist Steve Gadd, bass player Gary Giles, and drummer Ritchie Cole signed to Transatlantic Records and released its debut, self-titled album in 1970. The group flirted with success throughout the '70s, releasing nine more records. “Mudanzas” (“Changes”) was their 1973 album. ‘I Believe It’ is an elegiac number crowned with a guitar solo reminiscent, in key, to ‘Stairway to Heaven;’ ‘Pretty Things’ more urgent, with room for blistering six-string work from Del Bromham. The guitarist did away entirely with these frills on more stripped-down, fan-familiar hard rock efforts like the Quadrophenia-esque ‘It's Alright Ma!’ and the Status Quo-styled boogie rock of ‘Hallelujah.’ He then led the group down distinctly Beatles-ish roads on ‘Oil Fumes and Sea Air’ and ‘Soon as You've Grown.’ Del Bromham (guitarist): “When we were signed up by Wilf Pine of Worldwide Artists, his decision was to take us off of the road for a while as we’d been constantly gigging for years. He thought coming back after a period of absence with a new sound and look could be what was needed. So now music was going to be the top priority. I remember when Wilf heard the new material for ‘Mudanzas’ he said: ‘I thought I’d signed the new Black Sabbath, but I think I’ve found the Beatles instead.’” CD $12 SKU:24857

An album (Parlophone, 1970) that is all howling feedback guitars, explosive drumming, and muscular vocal antics‹and why not, as the album includes cover versions of songs by Black Sabbath, Grand Funk, plus a slow-burn 'Season of the Witch' that would spook Donovan, and the most schizoid '21st Century Schizoid Man' imaginable; the band rampaged through conservative South Africa for almost one year, then split; original album plus an EMI compilation track as a bonus; liner notes and photos tell the whole story of Suck. NORMAN HAINES BAND -DEN OF INIQUITY(UK psych/prog w 2 bonus tracks 1971 LP Label:ETHELION Reissue on LP of legendary heavy psych album. Including heavy re-work of 'Mr. Armageddon' and a lost track 'When I Come Down', later recorded by Black Sabbath, but never released! Originally from '71.In addition, 2 recordings from rare singles (listed only on the vinyl label).Soon after recording the iconic album 'We Are Everything You See' with his band Locomotive, Norman departed the group to establish this heavier outfit. The keyboard player was joined by guitarist Neil Clark, bassist Andy Hughes and drummer Jimmy Skidmore. One of the most sought after releases of the progressive rock era, 'Den Of Inquity' was the only album recorded by the band. Musically it was a dark and heavy affair with superb compositions that included a reworked version of 'Mr. Armageddon' (previously recorded by Locomotive), the excellent title track and the epic 13-minute 'Rabbits'. Issued on the Parlophone imprint in 1971, the album was available for a few short months before being deleted. NUNS-ST (70s S.F. punk on RED /PURPLE VINYL) Label:RADIATION Repress on purple/red vinyl. Classic debut album by original San Francisco punk band led by Alejandro Escovedo (future Rank & File) and Jennifer Miro (Debbie Harry's West Coast counterpart). Although The Nuns ruled the San Francisco punk scene in the late '70s, courted by major labels and selling out shows at San Francisco's hottest clubs, by the time the original band broke up they still had not recorded enough material for a full-length album. Thankfully, however, the band minus Escovedo came together once more for the sake of recording this album before calling it quits. Over the years Jennifer kept the band alive in different forms until her premature death in 2011. This classic slice of '77 punk rock, recorded in just 20 hours in May 1980, is the greatest testimony to the their original line up. LP $26 SKU:25053

OUTSIDERS (UK) --CALLING ON YOUTH (1977 glam punk)-Label:1972 Before fronting classic post-punk group The Sound, Adrian Borland was a Wimbledon teenager enamored of Iggy Pop and the Velvet Underground. With friends, he formed The Outsiders. In 1976, they home-recorded 'Calling On Youth', a searching full-length that straddles nihilo-punk argot as well as smudged glam balladry. Its release in 1977, on the group's own Raw Edge label, with Borland's cityscape abstraction on the cover, marked the first independent punk full-length in the United Kingdom. 'Calling On Youth' announces Borland as more than a precious teenage bandleader. The nervous introspection, wiry leads and negative space that he would refine solo and in The Sound, Second Layer and Witch Trials glistens throughout 'Calling On Youth', beckoning rediscovery. OZ KNOZZ -Ruff Mix( US 70s private press hard rock/prog)Label:OZONE First legit reissue of one of the best US private press hard rock/progressive rock albums of the 1970s. Formed in 1969 in Houston, TX, Oz Knozz's original crew included multi-instrumentalists Jack Alford, Bill Massey and Duane Massey. Alford left the group in 1971 and was replaced by drummer Marty Naul, while the next year the trio was joined by guitarist Richard Heath. The band had also a three-man horn section, which was dropped quite fast, although horns remained a part of the band's sound, even on their rare and epochal 1975 private press debut ''Ruff Mix,” released on the band’s own Ozone label.“Ruff Mix” mainly grooves in Hard Rock territory—the second track 'Peanut Butter Yoni' sounds a bit like Judas Priest with a proto-Metal feeling; but the album also has elements of Progressive Rock, Horn Rock and Pomp Rock. Like most bands of the era, the idea was to throw out a few different styles to see if something would stick… the theory being that a major label would hear the private album by chance and sign said band so they could open for Led Zeppelin or Foghat's next US tour… or something like that. What separates Oz Knozz from others is a strong compositional component, the band have plenty of original ideas and muster superb instrumentation. The guitar work ranges from hard and powerful to melodic and bluesy and is supported by some great keyboard, including awe-inspiring organ and synth waves. The three-part 15-minute 'Doodley Squat’ suite features heavy dual keyboard parts, crunchy guitars and expressive vocals; the result is a terrific Hard Prog track with lot of energy. For many, the standout track is the groovy and infectious horn rocker, which sounds as dated as the movement itself and easily could have been from 1969. PENTHOUSE 5-IT'S ALL MY OWN BIZARRE DREAM + 7"( rare mid sixties TEXAS garage psych) -Label:BREAK-A-WAY Hailing from the Dallas suburb Oak Cliff, The Penthouse 5 had its heyday in 1966-'67, when the band recorded a number of self-penned tunes and released two 45s. Several recordings from 1967 and other, more psychedelic influenced tracks remained unreleased, but demonstrate the musical versatility of the band. In 1966 the group underwent a substantial line-up change when three of the original band members, among them vocalist Rob Graham, left the group. He was replaced by Jon Williams, who had previously been with the By Fives and WordD. Alongside the Penthouse 5 recordings, the rare 7-inches of these closely linked bands are all collected for this release. Additionally an until now completely unknown 5-track '65 acetate rounds up this collection of rare and lost recordings by one of the greatest local '60s bands from the Lone Star State.
