HEARTBROKERS - VOL 10 (Original aussie rocknroll, plus the Don Nix classic Goin Down) Label:OFF THE HIP Remember The Lazy Cowgirls or have you heard Pat Todd’s subsequent work with The Rank Outsiders? The Heartbrokers are coming from a similar musical place without the former’s amped-up abrasiveness, plus a good deal more boogie. Coincidentally considering its name, The Heartbrokers’ song “Rank Outsider” is a reflective moment for pause that’s worth bottling. Van Walker’s knowing vocal really nails it. The languid but warm "Have No Fear" follows and the sequencing makes for a nice pigeon-pairing.
Fact: There's not a bad cut among the 10. It might have been rawly recorded but Van Walker, Lang and co-producer/mixer Colin Wynne have done a bang-up job, sonically speaking. God bless the Melbourne music scene and all who sail in her. 194 CD $10 SKU:19700

HEATH GREEN AND THE MAKESHIFTERS- ST (70s style ala Humble Pie, Joe Cocker) Digipack PROMO Label:ALIVE Heath Green and the Makeshifters aren’t reinventing the wheel. That’s simply not the point. It’s not always about what sounds "new". If you can make music like this, influenced by the artists and sounds of your geographic region, there’s no need to make anything anew. The pieces are scattered in various locations, and these boys pick them up and build something for themselves. We’re just lucky enough to listen in.Raw rock 'n' soul is back in the Magic City, and all the better for it. God Bless Alabama, its clay, or whatever the hell else it may be that incites these grooves. As long as there’s music to be cut into vinyl from the Deep South, my ears will be there to listen. So should yours. POP MATTERS CD $3 SKU:19780

HEATHCLIFF, JUSTIN- ST (70s paisley pop psych Label:WORLD PSYCHEDELIA "Long before attaining fame as a soundtrack composer and new age artist, Osamu Kitajima adopted a sufficiently Anglo pseudonym and released this amazing homage to British pop-psychedelia in 1971. Issued by Warner Bros. in Japan only, the LP has unsurprisingly climbed skywards in price ever since, and only a cave dweller could miss the faithful nods to Syd, Marc, John, Paul, George and Ringo in the original compositions and English lyrics. Osamu's ability around a studio was evident even then and the choice of genre to lovingly imitate predated the whole retro/'paisley' psych movement by about ten or fifteen years." CD $10 SKU:5970

HENDRYX, NONA - ST (70 soul pop) Label:T BIRD Nona Hendryx was one third of the pop/soul act LaBelle; after LaBelle called it quits in 1976. Hendryx released her self-titled debut record, which was an amazingly strong amalgam of soul and hard rock. Wearing skin tight pants, black leather and brandishing a Bowie knife on the LP cover she announced her intentions loud and clear but neither record company or radio at that time knew what to do with this African American woman with a huge voice comfortable and capable of singing hard rock as well as soul music. So, as usual, they turned their backs on the record and it disappeared almost as quickly as it was released. Which is a shame, because it's a nasty, relentless chunk of hard-edged rock'n'soul that was just a bit ahead of its time. Nona worked with Talking Heads as back-up singer and fell in with a hip crowd of musicians and her association with David Byrne led to her working with Bill Laswell who helped her put together her second solo album. HORDE - Press Button Firmly (mid sixties rare garage ) w 4 bonus tracks -Label:BREAK-A-WAY Rarest 60s garage album by North Carolina students from early 1967. Painstakingly remastered at KSL. Undoubtedly the most exciting mid sixties garage album to be recently discovered in the genre, is that by The Horde from North Carolina. The existence of this self produced album came to collectors ears and eyes only about a year ago. It was recorded more or less accidently in early 1967, released in a micro quantity of only 25 copies and among the local US garage albums of the decade it is one of the few eclectic examples with all the ingredients that makes it outstanding compared with the usual prep-school albums of the time. It contains a blend of exciting originals and well chosen, inspired covers, played in a raw, crude and frantic style. If ever it were true that the over-used assertion that a band's cover versions measured up to the originals, then it is true of The Horde. Why? These five 19-20 year old students from all over the United States did not only blaze a trail for 60s rock in then conservative North Carolina, they also had a general attitude that finds its origins in the young peoples mindset of the mid-sixties that put them outside of the local mainstream and gained them a sort of regional underground popularity. CD has 4 bonus tracks. CD $14 SKU:15346

HORIES, LOS - What’s the Time? (Garage/Rock) Label:OFF THE HIP Los Hories have been holed up in their garage (yes they really do practice in a garage) next to a matt black ford panel van, churning out party anthems all summer. While the rest of New Zealand was holidaying at the beach Los Hories chose the power of homebrew beer and bbq's to deliver you 11 slices of pure yell it at the wall, tear out your vocal chords rock'n'roll party magic. Whats the Time? It's Horie time! the new album recorded by New Zealand's Los Hories. Laid straight to tape by one man country band Boss Christ in an abandoned scottish marching hall. 11 tracks of pure BBQ Rock'n'Roll recorded under the influence of home brew beer, parties and burnouts! The artwork for the record was by Luke Wood a.k.a the Damned Evangelist, New Zealand's intense alpha surf rock band. CD $10 SKU:8975

HUMAN EXPRESSION- Love At Psychedelic Velocity (60s psych) Label:CICADELIC "In 1966, four high school students from the Los Angeles suburbs formed The Human Expression, and by January 1967, their first single, 'Love At Psychedelic Velocity' b/w 'Every Night', was released to an unsuspecting public. It was a dazzling, driving, opus of mind-bending sounds, and a harbinger of things to come. Their second single, 'Optical Sound' b/w 'Calm Me Down', released in the 'Summer Of Love', was a two-sided tour de force, with brooding introspective lyrics by lead singer, Jim Quarles. The Human Expression's edgy bad boy image was the antithesis of the 'flower-children' image so prevalent for groups in 1967. The Human Expression's third single was 'Sweet Child Of Nothingness', written by Mars Bonfire, who offered the band another new song, 'Born To Be Wild.' Quarles thought the lyrics trite, and since he was the lead singer, the band rejected the song, even before Steppenwolf recorded it. Nevertheless, the three singles The Human Expression released during their short-lived career, would burnish their reputation as one of the finest garage bands to emerge from the mid-60s Los Angeles music scene. Compiled on this CD are all the surviving demos and tapes of The Human Expression, along with rare band memorabilia, and demos by Quarles from 1965 (recorded just before The Human Expression)." CD $12 SKU:11740

HUMAN ZOO- st(70s garage psych) Label:CICADELIC RECORDS Along with The Human Expression, The Human Zoo were from the Los Angeles suburbs of Westminster and were signed to Accent Records. Their album, released in 1970 was pressed in limited numbers and has become a rare collectors item. The Human Zoo album is a quirky blend of psychedelic, garage, and funky music. Managed by Jim Foster of The Human Expression and originally called The Circus, the band changed their name to the hipper sounding Human Zoo in 1969. Now for the first time since 1970, here is an exact re-issue of The Human Zoo album, taken from the original master tapes with all album artwork faithfully restored. CD $8 SKU:11893

HUNNS- Live Fast - Label:DISASTER DIE HUNNS has gone through many line-ups over the years, and released numerous singles. This album has all of them in one place, plus the pre-production recordings for what was supposed to be the band's second album, recorded a year after 'Long Legs Die Hunns' (2004) and months before 'Your Rot Me' (2006). It is another "catchy, dirty, ugly-as-hell" product of Duane and Corey's musical collaboration, and yes, she sings a lot on the album! 'Live Fast Die Hunns' includes "a total of 12 killer tracks, on an album that rocks out," says Duane; songs such as 'You Want The Truth', 'Back In Black' and 'Ain't It A Shame' which were limited releases, as well as new songs never recorded before such as 'Live Fast, Die Hunns', 'Nothin' Commin' and 'Hangin' Around'. This missing link in Die Hunns' discography also features great cover art by graphic designer Tom D. Kline. The release is a Disaster world exclusive, and a must-have for fans of 'The Master of Disaster' and his long-legged partner in rock'n'roll crime. CD $10 SKU:13138

HUNNS /DIE HUNNS / Long Legs digipack with Duane Peters and Corey Parks -Label:DISASTER Records “Duane Peters and Corey Parks, the rude 'n' tattooed fun couple of punk, finally get to collaborate on the viciously raging Long Legs, the first Hunns album to feature the 6 foot-plus ex-Nashville Pussy vixen. She brings to the table driving basslines and an effective vocal counterpoint to Peters' snotty rasp, but the focus is still the ex-U.S. Bombs frontman and his unceasing font of bad attitude. This is catchy, dirty, ugly-as-hell punk rock” - High Bias. “I gotta tell you, Corey Parks had me from the git-go but her "hey, ho, let's go" chants on the chorus of "Burn In Hell" took it to a whole new level. Warning to the faint of heart, this is a real rock n' roll record. (Yeah, I said record, 'cause when it's this good calling it a real rock n' roll cd just doesn't seem right.) Posers may spontaneously comburst into flames. Cool, huh- Ear Candy CD $5 SKU:4302

The release features their LP 'Hypsterization!', originally released on Voxx in 1980, as well as the band's first EP, plus an array of previously unreleased material; a total of 37 tracks on brilliant high-energy garage. "A high-speed hurricane of mid-'60s Brit snot and MC5 revolutionary rama lama. Along with the Chesterfield Kings on the East Coast and the Crawdaddys in San Diego, the Hypstrz were the first to mine a fogotten motherlode of hopeless obsucre 45s dropped worldwide by hapless teen combos" - City Pages CD $5 SKU:4324

IL BALLETTO DI BRONZ- Serio 2222 - W 12 PAGE BOOKLET (Raw-edged heavy rock JIMMY PAGE STYLE ) -Label:LION Raw-edged heavy rock, fronted by Lino Ajello's powerful electric guitars, channeling the dark, jagged energy of Jimmy Page, Adrian Gurvitz, and Jeff Beck. Il Balletto di Bronzo absorbed their influences (Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, The Yardbirds), but moved from there into an inspired, hard-edged musical space; the band's overwhelming power and great melodies make them irresistible. ‘Un posto’ and ‘Neve Calda’ are centered around simple but effective guitar riffs. ‘Eh eh ah ah’ starts like a nice mellow ballad, but gets into a hard blues rock groove. On side two, there's the seven-minute mammoth heavy grind of ‘Incantesimo’ and the colossal ‘Missione Sirio 2222,’ almost ten minutes of droning acid rock with whirling guitars and heavy pounding drums, sandwiched between an acoustic intro and outro. No wonder Nurse With Wound cited Il Balletto di Bronzo as an influence. Digipack comes with 12-page color booklet discussing Il Balletto Di Bronzo's strange legacy. CD $14 SKU:16072

BEYOND THE CALICO WALL - VA ( 60s psych ) Label:VOXX The good people who put together this compilation set out to accomplish no less daunting a task than collecting the most bizarre and extreme underground psychedelic music recorded in the 1960's, and, for the most part, the choices seem to be right on the money. The collection starts off with "The Trip" by Park Avenue Playground, a song that bursts out of the gate with an explosion of fuzz guitar, organ, and mad siren-like oscillating effects, coming at you from all directions, seemingly. Next up is "Suzie's gone" by Afterglow, definitely one of the weirdest singles ever. The singer moans "!" in the most detached voice possible over a staccato organ and drum part, leading to a guitar solo that soon collapses into no recognizable conventional song structure. No less amazing is "Mt. Olympus" by The Flower Power, which starts off as an innocuous and somewhat introspective sounding piece until a wild heavily chorused guitar break, which only slightly warns you of the totally anarchic feedback and free-form noise ending -- which goes on for over a minute in a 3:40 single! Then you get a bizarre sci-fi/horror tale in "The pulse" by Burritt Bradley, and an incredible reading of The Electric Prunes' "I had too much to dream last night" by Rasputin and the Mad Monks, with weird proto-techno sound effects, backwards vocals, and production effects making the backing track fade in and out, creating a disturbing sensory assault. Other highlights include "An experiment in terror" by The Greek Fountains, which is a strange polyrhythmic instrumental, and "Up in my mind" by The Spontaneous Generation, which surely has to rank as one of the most aggressive 60's psych records ever made, with waves of vibrato guitar and insistent wah wah riffing. Also worthwhile is "The electronic insides and metal complexion that make up Herr Dr. Krieg," by The Riders of the Mark, which musically isn't quite as strange as its title, but comes close! The weirdness factor decreases somewhat as the c.d. progresses, and a sloppy but straightforward cover of "In a gadda da vida" by Six Feet Under makes for a pretty uninteresting closer, but the good material here makes this an essential purchase. Buy it if you like psychedelia, experimental or Incredibly Strange Music. Robert Schell (Townsville, Texas)

ARCESIA-Reachin' (rare 70’s private press acid-rock / pop, gatefold, w insert and lyrics -Label:GUERSSEN RECORDS (SPAIN) A classic since year zero of rare record collecting, Reachin' Arcesia has always been the focus of many rumors and bizarre stories. Guerssen sets the record straight with this, the first ever legitimate reissue of this legendary album. John Arcesi was a veteran singer of the big band era who, in the early '70s, recorded a pop album with help from an anonymous hip studio musicians. The album was released in a private edition of 300 copies and most of them were given away to family and friends. In the late '80s, one of those copies was unearthed by record dealer Paul Major, who was one of the first people to appreciate the singularity of Reachin' Arcesia. Since then, the album, which mixes over-the-top crooner vocals with late '60s acid-rock and pop arrangements, has developed a reputation as a lounge-psych/real people masterpiece. Remastered and presented in a gatefold sleeve with the original artwork on the back and a new cover design on the front. Includes insert with lyrics. Features detailed liner notes and rare photos in the inner gatefold, telling the real story of John Arcesi. LP $19 SKU:16346

ASTRAL SCENES ASTRAL PROJECTION(1968 Pop/Psych- get out the lava lamps!) )Label:HIMALAYA This 1968 Pop/Psychedelic Rock album is just chock full spacey instrumentation and utilizes horns, woodwind, and string sections very much like those used in Sgt. Peppers. The theme of this release is based upon the thoughts and feelings experienced if one were to leave the physical body (Astral Projection) and become the spiritual embodiment (Astral Body). The Astral Body begins to go back into the physical body and causes one to think about The Astral Scene…..There are some very nice male and female vocals which are backed up by the great orchestration and this LP is one to set the lights down low on and turn on the Lava Lamps!!! AVENGERS V1- Really Cool Hits w download ( 1966 Original So Cal SURF ) - Label:DIONYSUS The Avengers VI "Real Cool Hits" limited edition white vinyl repress - includes free digital download THE AVENGERS VI were a clean-cut surf band from Anaheim, Calif., whose one and only album, Real Cool Hits, was issued in 1966 as a promo for Good Humor ice cream. The group's name wasn't even mentioned on the cover although it was pictured on the kick drum. The LP, originally issued on the Mark 56 label, was sold from the Good Humor ice cream trucks and has since become a highly-valued collector's item. In 2008 an original copy went for $315 in an online auction. What set THE AVENGERS VI apart from many of the other surf groups was their superior musicianship. Guitarist Jim Ferguson was reported to practice eight hours a day while organist Mike DeYoung had formal musical training and a wide knowledge of classical music. The group's repertoire, which encompassed covers of popular surf instrumentals, mood music, movie themes and some first rate originals, attracted both teens and adults to their appearances in southern California. THE AVENGERS VI had largely been forgotten, except by die-hard collectors, until Bacchus Archives reissued Real Cool Hits on both vinyl and CD in 2001. The vinyl reissue has itself become collectible, bringing prices of $30 and up, which is why we've decided to repress this gem! BACHS- Out of the Bachs - remastered 180 gram (60s garage psych) GERMAN IMPORT- Label:OUT SIDER Restocked; '60s garage-psych moody monster! Includes insert with detailed liner notes and rare photos.Out of The Bachs was originaally released in 1968 as a private pressing of 150 copies; it's one of the rarest USA '60s garage/teenbeat albums ever. The band consisted of five young kids from Chicago, regulars at local teen dances, who decided to release an album for their fans before splitting up. Recorded and mixed in just ten hours at a makeshift studio, Out of The Bachs offers 12 amazing self-penned songs with a sound ahead of its time. Pure teenage-angst vocals, crashing Rickenbackers, fuzz outbursts, killer moody tracks... Sadly, all previous reissues of the album failed to capture the true sound of the original, until the Time-Lag label reissued it in 2011 with remastered sound from a pristine original vinyl copy. This reissue uses the same audio master as the out-of-print Time-Lag edition. File next to The Rising Storm, The Fantastic Dee-Jays, The Savages. Includes insert with detailed liner notes and rare photos. LP $17 SKU:13382

BAINS, LEE - Dereconstructed (w first run color vinyl and MP3 download) -Label:SUB POP Dereconstructed is a careening, road raging, all night party of a record. Informed by a distinctly southern hoodoo, it is a master class in authentic Gulf Coast choogle. Having cut his teeth in the Dexateens, Lee Bains lll has been properly schooled in how to throw down, so much so that even his hyper literate musings are no match for the blown out distortion that gives this record its blistering urgency.Songs like “The Kudzu and the Concrete,” “Dirt Track” and the roaring, blissfully shambolic title track could be anthems looking for a stadium, but they’re also reminders as to why Lee Bains lll & the Glory Fires are such a formidable party machine. If your hometown is graced with a scuzzy dive and a few warm bodies to populate it, you’d best believe that the Glory Fires have been there, or are on their way back.Dereconstructed is Lee Bains lll & the Glory Fires’ debut for Sub Pop Records. It is preceded by the band’s actual debut, There Is a Bomb in Gilead, on Alive Natural-Sound Records (2012). LP $16 SKU:10000

BARRACUDAS- ST(ltd ed OF 100 color vinyl)Label:NDN As a cursory look at radio playlists and cult whisperings will attest, The Barracudas reappearance after so long could not be better timed. Garage music is in fashion (again) and so is surf (well, Brian Wilson, and let's face it they might as well be synonymous). Power pop, likewise, from a 45 grave, has risen to reassert its importance. Indeed, all the styles the band have mastered and made their own are now current and selling. And another thing: The Barracudas sounds younger than yesterday but with experience supplying an edge that cuts across time to the heart of the band. LP $10 SKU:4392

Bators' first solo album, Disconnected was recorded in Los Angeles following the breakup of the Dead Boys. AURA- Sativa (1974 SF psych funk masterpiece)Label:LION Official replica vinyl edition of this oft-sampled slab of Bay Area history, a psych funk masterpiece that cannot be denied. Aura formed in 1974 and played extensively throughout Northern California. By 1976, the band recorded their first and only album at Pacific Recording Studio in San Mateo. The original title of the album was meant to be "Sativa", but out of fear that promoting the joys of marijuana would be too controversial, the band omitted the title and just left it as "Aura". Over the ensuing decades, the Aura album has grown in stature to become a major soul/funk collector's item. It features a number of major funk tracks plus funky ballads with female vocals. Standouts include 'Sativa' (replete with water-pipe sound effects and blistering guitar), and the manic fuzz-guitar jam 'Skyrocket.'
