MONTESANO -El Pasillo (1982 Argentine prog) -Label:RECORD RUNNER It was in the early eighties, when ex-Crucis keyboardist Gustavo Montesano ended his participation in "Merlin" (a band founded with Alejandro De Michele, and with whom he recorded a disc), and decided to create a new project, which was to combine traditional music and a taste for symphonic progressive rock. The result was the band Montesano, with his brother Marcelo on keyboards, Fernando Ortega of Marbella on bass, Marina Olmi on vocals, and Richard Giles on drums. Their sole album, “El Pasillo,” was released early in 1982. A refined progressive rock, full of nuances, with the music based upon carefully developed, delicate melodies. This mixing of Latin sophistication and elegance evokes Italians groups such as Premiata Forneria Marconi, Celeste, Quella Vecchia Loccanda with superb aerial guitar parts ala Santana and delicate keyboards lines. The CD includes two unreleased tracks from Crucis. An album that deserves to be rediscovered and appreciated to understand a little more of one of the great artists of progressive rock from Argentina. CD $16 SKU:20341

MONTESANO, GUSTAVO -Homenaje (1977 ARGENTINE RARITY) -Label:RECORD RUNNER Going for big bucks elsewhere! Montesano was the bassist and primary composer of Crucis, and his debut solo album "Homenaje" (1977) was made in the slipstream of Crucis' second album "Los Delirios del Mariscal." The rest of Crucis contribute, as do many other notable Argentinean rock musicians of the time. The opening instrumental 'Sinfonia Lunatica' and the subsequent vocal number 'Cuando la duda se hace grande alrededor' are the album's highlights, full of lively melodies, sunny Mellotron and synthesizer layers and excellent guitar work from Pino Marrone which highlights the melodic side of his playing. The vocal parts on the poppy 'La última barrera' and the piano ballad 'Desde que te pude ver' are a bit marshmallowy, even if the instrumental parts on the latter (including a real string section) are inspired. The rest of the album divides itself between two majestically droning instrumentals and the up-tempo rocker 'Primer triunfo,', which has Genesis-like penchant for driving yet choppy rhythms, leaping synthesizers and solid chords. The end result is a very accessible and immediate symphonic album, not very complex in structures yet rich in arrangements and melodies. Argentina has produced stronger progressive rock (e.g. Bubu's "Anabelas", Pablo el Enterrador's first album), but unless complexity and intensity are what you are primarily looking for, you shouldn't ignore this satisfying little album. Two short, previously unreleased Crucis tracks have been added as a bonus on the CD version. These are close to the second album in sound, but lighter and simpler in style. Nice and jazzy and they push the CD past the 40-minute mark, so no complaints there. CD $15 SKU:20273

MORAN, CHILO Y SU QUINTETO - TROMPETA PSICODELICA -RARE MEXICAN MINI LP SLV Label:VAM Though from the psychedelic era, this album's title, Trompeta Psicodelica, is a bit of a misnomer, as nothing on it sounds particularly psychedelic! What this album does offer in spades is incredibly groovy, spirited jazz and R&B tunes played by an incredibly tight quintet. It's infectious, upbeat fun that's sure to please at your next swingin' get together (just make sure you have both tequila and mezcal on hand)! Songs include "Guadalajara," "Mezcal," "Las Chiapanecas," "Alla en el Rancho Grande," "Rayando el sol," "Jarabe tapatio," "Tequila," "La borrachita," "Adiós Mariquita Linda," and "Adiós mi chaparrita." CD $10 SKU:19687

MORAZ, PATRICK- Future Memories 1 and 11(MOODY BLUES)-Label:TIME WAVE Swiss born Patrick Moraz is probably best known in rock music circles for his membership of two of the world’s biggest rock bands, Yes and the Moody Blues. He was also been a member of the progressive rock band Mainhorse, forming the band with bassist Jean Ristori in 1969 and releasing one self titled album in 1970. By the time of the release of Moraz’s debut solo album in early 1976, he was firmly installed as the keyboard player in Yes. Following the release of Relayer all the members of Yes embarked on solo projects thus ensuring that his “The Story Of I” received maximum coverage in the music press. He then released his second solo album in 1977 (“Out In The Sun”) before joining the Moody Blues. As can be deduced from the title the second disc on offer here is a pairing of the first two Future Memories releases gathered together on one release. As with all the albums in the Patrick Moraz reissue campaign, this album has been re mastered for release by Moraz himself from the original master tapes. (Time Wave) CD $5 SKU:19061

MOUSTAKI ,GEORGES - Le Concert (French 50s/60s outsider) LAST COPIESLabel:PAZZAZZ (Germany) lAthough he achieved his greatest fame in France, singing French-language songs in a distinctly French style, singer/songwriter Georges Moustaki was more a citizen of the world—or, as he often put it a “citizen of the French language.’ Christening himself a cultural “mongrel" in his signature hit ’Le Métèque," Moustaki’s first love was the classic-style French chanson—but he often appropriated world folk music from Greece, Turkey, the Middle East, Brazil (bossa nova and MPB), Argentina (tango) and other parts of Latin America, the United States (blues and jazz), and anywhere else his travels took him. Simplicity was a hallmark of many of his own recordings; possessed of a soft, warm voice, he often sang with only his own guitar for accompaniment, creating an intimacy that translated to his live gigs as well. A successful artist in his own right, Moustaki initially made his name as a songwriter of some renown, composing material for many of the top French singers of the late '50s and ’60s, his one-time lover Édith Piaf (including the massive hit ‘Milord’), Barbara, Brigitte Fontaine, Dalida (including ‘Gigi l'amoroso’), France Gall, and Cindy Daniel. Moustaki has moonlighted as a poet, actor, novelist, and journalist at various points in his career, and remains one of France's more ambitious artists as his trademark beard and long, flowing hair have turned white. CD $8 SKU:19057

MOVEMENTS-LIKE ELEPHANTS 2 (Swedish psych rock) -Label:CRUSHER In the fall of 2013 psychedelic rock band The Movements, from Gothenburg, Sweden, released their long-awaited album 'Like Elephants 1'. An album that was to score top reviews and end up at several music journalists "best-of-the-year" lists. The year 2014 sees the release of the second and final part, 'Like Elephants 2'. With 'Like Elephants 1' The Movements proclaimed their distance from today's fastfood consumption of songs pulled out of their context and instead dare to demand a greater commitment by the listener. That through these two volumes, which not only stand strong individually but together also create a whole, a kind of continuity. On 'Like Elephants 2' there is the catchy opening track 'Six Feet Under', spellbinding psychedelia in 'Stolen Love', and the raw and groovy 'Give It To Me' to name three of the ten well-crafted songs to be found on this album. CD $10 SKU:20700

#043-CDR (Cambodian Rocks artists) Label:KHMER ROCKS Several volumes—all CDR’s, as that is the way most music is sold amongst the Cambodian communities worldwide. These discs contain music from artists featured on the “Cambodian Rocks” series of compilations... although in this case, all the text is in Khmer, so good luck finding out what the tracks are called, or who is singing them. The music on these CDR’s demonstrates a much wider variety of styles than you hear on the “Cambodian Rocks” volumes, ranging far beyond the rock idiom into the land of what one might call an Ethiopiques sound, with Latin music, orchestra, and rough folkloric recordings all on display. A treat for the true cultural crate digger... you can’t get more down and dirty—or cheaper—than this. Very limited quantities.COMP CD $6 SKU:20501

GURU GURU - Hinten (1968 German psych krautrock) ONE ONLY! - Label:PLAY LOUD (Germany): : The ever-changing line-up of Guru Guru produced some of the most innovative albums in German music history. The band’s music has been referred to as many things (usually containing the word “acid” in the description); quite simply, it was music that had no rules, which made it free and inspirational. The will to experiment, the creation of sound collages, the non-song structured tracks, and the use of noise (at least on their first two albums, “UFO” and “Hinten”) can be seen in retrospect as the birthplace of industrial-electronic music. "Instead of waiting one more year for Alien Starfleet Command to beam them up, Guru Guru set all their energies into priming a furious lift-off on their second LP, “Hinten.” And here they sound less lumpen/trudging than on their stellar “UFO” LP but every bit as Frei-Rock and exploratory. But unlike “UFO,” “Hinten” exhibits a more flexible and plastic structure: it’s loose, yet tight. It’s free flowing, yet scripted enough to accommodate a free-fall of freak outs; they allowed themselves all the space in the universe yet managed to combine together with such effectively precise riffing just off enough to allow all concerned to wander off the path as many times as they liked without leaving a trail of breadcrumbs behind and never getting lost. There are also more vocals present here, but only if you can call murmuring song titles over ten-plus-minutes’ worth of an ensemble jumble of detuned, skittering guitars shrieking and groaning feedback with an overlay of contact microphone hi-jinks with jarring percussive strikes ‘vocals.’ And this was presented in a far clearer sonic image than ever before, courtesy of its self-production ably assisted by engineer Conrad Plank." -the Seth Man, Head Heritage.co.uk. Limited edition of 500 copies. LP $25 SKU:21154

HOT KNIVES - ST SPANISH IMPORT (70s pop/power pop, glam, psych)-Label:GOT KINDA LOST Hot Knives were a late period folk-rock / power pop combo from the latter ‘70s San Francisco—and held two ex-Flamin’ Groovies members in their ranks (guitarist Tim Lynch, and drummer Danny Mihm). Led by the hair-rising boy-girl sound from the Houpt siblings (Michael and Debra), and bolstered by the ringing, jangly guitars of Lynch/Houpt, and driving rhythm section of Mihm and bassist Ed Wilson, sparks flew when they united as a whole. This set collects the tracks from their late ‘70s singles, and a further batch of dynamite tracks pressed into wax (seeing vinyl release for the first time).extensive liner notes, “…Hot Knives were a little too late for the '60s hippie trip and a little too hippie for the crash'n'burn punk rock brushfire of the mid-'70s,” but their consistent songwriting and way with a hook should appeal to all with a ‘pop heart’ beating in their chest, fans of ’60s SF sounds, and folk-rock LP $18 SKU:18116

IGGY AND THE STOOGES- RAW STOOGES VOL 2 - Rare unofficial release! Label:ELECTRIC MINT VINYL very slight cover wear on corner. LP $50 SKU:20901

JOINT EFFORT -Final Effort (intriguing folk/rock/psych 1974)-Label:VOID/HALLUCINATIONS RECORDS (USA) With its immediately recognizable M C Escher cover, this intriguing folk/rock/psych release from 1974 is another incredibly rare album enjoying its first legitimate reissue. A Joint Effort's Final Effort was originally recorded and released by Canada's University Of New Brunswick on its Little Records label (Little Records 101); despite its lack of wider recognition, this is generally regarded by those who know as a diverse and eclectic album with a number of outstanding tracks. One pundit described it as 'a weird mix of early CSNY, with shades of Perth County Conspiracy and a dash of early Eagles thrown in.' The first side, with the superb 'Winter' is particularly impressive—largely acoustic hippy folk rock with the occasional electric guitar thrown in for good measure. Side two, however, is an altogether rockier affair with standout tracks 'Greed For Goldand,' an up-tempo fuzzed-out cover of ‘A Horse With No Name’ combining effectively to elevate Final Effort to a different musical plane. Original cover has been reproduced as well as rare original insert. LP $14 SKU:19256

KALACAKRA Crawling to Lhasa - PIC DISC of psych jewel 1972 (SLIGHTLY dinged copies BARGAIN ! Label:GARDEN OF DELIGHTS (Germany): Picture disc of this psychedelic jewel, that fully deserves its mythical, mystical reputation. Kalacakra's "Crawling To Lhasa" contains eight tracks of mantric acid-folk self-released in 1972 by the apparently drugged-out duo of Claus Rauschenbach (guitars, kongas, percussions, vocals, harmonica, slentem) and Heinz Martin (electric guitars, flute, piano, vibraphon, schalmi, cello, violin, synthesizer). Their strange, hippie sense of humor and obsession with the culture of Tibet (the name Kalacakra is the Tibetan term for "wheel of time") results in some fantastically nonsensical, eastern-influenced psychedelia. The album begins with the dark, hypnotic ‘Nearby Shiras’, a song about a plague-ravaged town in old Persia; as their crawl to Lhasa continues, Kalacakra venture into zones of lovely folk-strum and raga-rock, before the album wraps up with a deranged and damaged blues stumble called ‘Tante Olga’. Garden of Delights do their usual thorough job with a thick insert full of liner notes (in German and English), plus photos of Claus and Heinz looking about as weird and long-haired and hippie-ish as it's possible to get! Limited to 1000 hand-numbered copies. Includes an 8-page insert. LP $16 SKU:20885

KANE, EDEN - It’s Eden MONO (ORIG PRESSING 1964 MONO) VG+ pop before the Beatles! ) -Label:FONTANA • Eden Kane – the stage name for Richard Graham Sarstedt – was a big star of that early 60s period now sometimes labelled ‘Pop Before The Beatles’. Eden is the older brother of musicians Peter and Clive Sarstedt.• After a lone single for Pye, he hit the top spot with his first of many 45s for Decca, ‘Well I Ask You’, which now appropriately lends its name to the first-ever compilation of Eden’s entire recorded output. It was followed by three more Top 10 UK hits over the next year: ‘Get Lost’ (no. 10), ‘Forget Me Not’ (no. 3) and ‘I Don’t Know Why’ (no. 7).• In due course, Eden made seven singles, three EPs and an album for Decca before switching to Fontana Records in 1963. Again, the relationship yielded an album and seven singles (alongside an EP) but while Eden’s music matured, he struggled to maintain the same level of chart success as before. LP $15 SKU:20852

KENNY AND THE KASUALS- 1966-1968 THE SINGLES...PLUS 180g Vinyl IMPORT (Garage/Beat/Psych) -Label:MISSING VINYL Texas had without any doubt a great number of fine and very original bands during the 60s,with The 13th Floor Elevators at the very top of the list of course, followed by almost forgotten groups that recorded whole albums like the great Golden Dawn, Lost & Found or the positively weird Red Crayola. There were also many garage bands that have appeared on countless comps. One of the very best of these was Kenny & the Kasuals. Thus it is that we are excited about this original twenty track compilation fully authorized by Kenny B. Daniel, containing the best tracks the band recorded between 1966 and 1968. All their singles, plus several unreleased tracks too; all originals, including the local killer fuzz-bass classic, 'Journey to Tyme'. One of the best examples of US garage, teenbeat and proto-psych, and a must have for each and every serious garage/psych collector. Limited edition, deluxe 180g vinyl. First ever vinyl issue of this title. LP $18 SKU:20887

MOBBS -GARAGE PUNK FOR BOYS (British garage punk) Label:CRAVAT 'Garage Punk For Boys' has taken its impetus from the title track itself. A "do it yourself" mentality has spurred these three lads to commit the songs to tape. The infectious feeling of jocular silliness, ferocity, calamity and fun will draw you in. With an arsenal of influences, each song is an homage to a variety of current and historic punk rock pioneers - from the mono-tones of 1960s British Beat to a full on undertone of funked up rhythm & blues. 'Garage Punk For Boys' lifts its hat to a Wilko Johnson infused Billy Childish explosion, with a rocket full of ideas inspired by contemporary cult English bands such as The Masonics, and a massive dose of live energy derived from the likes of King Salami & The Cumberland 3! CD $10 SKU:20698

MOCK DUCK - TEST Record (60s fuzzed out rarity)Label:GEAR FAB Well, we don't know what else to call this project because there were only 14 acetates made of their live recordings at The Village Bistro in Vancover, B.C. in October 1968. But
never fear, for we have unearthed the master Tapes form those sessions plus a lot more unreleased live and Studio recordings from this same period, including the 12 minute long studio session of June, 1968. Rising from the ashes of such famous Vancouver bands as The United Empire Loyalists, Cement City Cowboys and Six Cylinder, this band played a style of music that crossed between a fuzzed out John Coltrane sound to one of hard driving rock with Farfisa organ and blazing guitars and hard-edged vocals. Includes all their 45s releases plus other unreleased studio tracks. Don't pay $2,000 for an original copy of the acetate….just buy this release!!! CD $10 SKU:19301

MOPS--Psychedelic Sounds in Japan (60s Japanese rock) -Label:WORLD PSYCHEDELIA (Korea) The Mops are the undisputed kings of the late sixties/early seventies Japanese rock scene; all of their discs are marked by spectacular singing, playing, arranging, and songwriting. Yet it is their first album, "Psychedelic Sounds in Japan," that gets the most praise—rightly so, as it's a marked deviation from most of the other music making going on at the time in Japan, with its sharply stripped-down sound and emphasis on musicianship, songwriting, and atmosphere over production values. As such, it's one of the few Japanese rock albums that has an outside-of-Japan following, and it's frequently name-checked on lists of classic obscure albums. But of course, this means that original LP copies of the album trade for hilarious amounts! This reissue restores the track "Blind Bird," (missing from other reissues of this album, apparently due to its "offensive" lyrics), and adds seven bonus tracks. If you've never heard this album, and you're a fan of tightly written songs, great playing, totally incomprehensible lyrics and a smattering of surprising covers (‘The Letter,’ ‘Light My Fire,’ ‘Somebody to Love’), this one’s for you. And how can anyone live without the classic ‘I Am Just a Mops’—I mean, aren’t we all? CD $10 SKU:18954

Featuring eight rare bonus tracks (including home recordings made by Morgen and guitarist Murray Shiffrin shortly after the album's December 1969 release), a packed booklet and rare photos, it's truly essential for fans of psychedelia. MORNING DEW - No More ( 60s Kansaspsych ) -Label:CICADELIC RECORDS Along with The Blue Things, The Morning Dew were one of Kansas' finest psychedelic bands of the '60s. This CD presents over one hour of their recordings- the 1966 Audio House session, all the singles (with bonus alternate versions), the 1968 Fairyland sessions (including newly discovered psychedaelic stereo version with special effects-headphone use suggested). An in-depth booklet with a cache of photos, radio surveys, and posters, traces the genesis of an instrumental group called The Impax in 1963 to The Morning Dew in 1966. By 1968, The Morning Dew forged a complex psychedelic sound the culminated with their famed Fairyland summer '68 sessions. This release is the first of two covering the history of the band. The second release will contain their much sought after 1970 Roulette album, known as At Last with alternate versions, plus their unreleased second album." CD $14 SKU:9710

MORNING REIGN - CAN'T GET ENOUGH OF IT (Prev unrel 60s garage psych))-Label:PERFECT TOY It does not happen very often anymore that unreleased music from 50 years ago surfaces. And it's even more unlikely that the songs put on tape are such treasures. But that is exactly what we have here. The Morning Reign was a crowd pleasing band that played throughout the Pacific Northwest during the years between 1966 and 1972. Their journey was peppered with lots of travel, whether they were playing gigs in Crescent City or Aspen, and they also made a gaggle of trips to LA to record, or once, to film a TV appearance. Surprisingly, they have released only four 45rpm singles during their existence although they had recorded enough material for an entire album. However, the songs remained in the can. This is the story of The Morning Reign, a band of young fellas who could have become famous and mentioned in the same breath as The Doors, Eric Burdon & WAR, and all the other music legends of the garage/psychedelic rock era - if their songs had been released back in the day. Dive in and enjoy the sound of Morning Reign, it is truly special. Perfect Toy Records are thrilled to be the label to finally release their work, and sincerely hope that they will finally receive the worldwide appreciation they so richly deserve. CD $17 SKU:20489

MOUNT CARMEL - GET PURE Digipack (for Radio Moscow fans!) Label:ALIVE Amid the current industry of cool, Mount Carmel’s lack of gimmick is a welcome anachronism. A FINE DAY AND A BRILLIANT EVENING -Cherry Red Rarities 1983-85 (willowy pop)Label:CHERRY RED More willowy pop of yesteryear from the vaults of Cherry Red. The second release in the Cherry Red Rarities series, is a collection of rare and upstanding tracks from three of Cherry Red’s most popular artists: Jane And Barton, Grab Grab The Haddock (yes, they really did exist) and In Embrace. “The juxtaposition of the three artists here seems coincidental, yet they successfully present different facets of the sound of the label during the early 80's. Jane & Barton start with the acapella 'It's A Fine Day' which was later turned into the Opus III dancefloor smash. Flute and percussion accompany Jane on 'I Want To Be With You' to nice pastoral effects a la Virginia Astley, although the latter would have never named one of her songs 'Ha Bloody Ha', which poses such thought-provoking questions as "Did you hear about the woman who died" or "What part of a vegetable can't you eat". Simple voice and piano arrangement on 'There Is A Man' and 'You Are Over There' makes ideal lazy afternoon listening, only to be rudely disturbed by Mr.Barton's grating screech on 'You Are Over There Part Two'. Onto the marvelously named Grab Grab The Haddock, which included two of the three Marine Girls after Tracey Thorn went on to form Everything But The Girl. They pretty much carried on with the style of their previous band, only now augmented to a four-piece. Lightweight summery guitar pop, the stuff that made Cherry Red famous. In Embrace played moody melodic pop with guitar and synths. Although once described as 'introverted and emotionally unfathomable' the songs are actually quite classy and the sentiments deeply felt. 'The Darkest Horse' features a spine-tingling chord progression slightly reminiscent of the Cocteaus. They should have been big. The CD ends with a bonus video of 'It's A Fine Day'. BRIAN OLIVE and his backing band melded soulful R&B with technicolor garage-pop for their early daytime set, while HENRY’S FUNERAL SHOE (the Welsh duo), LEFT LANE CRUISER and newcomers JOHN THE CONQUEROR perhaps kept closest to the Deep Blues curriculum with their respectively raunchy and heavily amplified modern interpretations of rural gutbucket Delta Blues.

BEAUTIFUL DREAMS -Ember Sixties Pop: Volume 5, Ember Girls (66-69) Label:FANTASTIC VOYAGE The concluding chapter of the Ember Sixties Pop series, which covers the years 1966 to 1969, and compiles the releases of three fine female singers. The publicity conscious Ember boss Jeffrey Kruger saw an opportunity to promote supermodel Twiggy as a singer, and signed her to the label in 1966. Her two singles were written and produced by Tommy Scott, who had overseen Twinkle’s hits ‘Terry’ and ‘Golden Lights.’ At the time, the singles became huge hits in Japan, which resulted in Twiggy appearing at the Budokan Hall in Tokyo, not singing her songs but parading the latest fashions while a local group played Beatles covers as accompaniment! Linda Thorson was a television favorite as the glamorous sidekick on The Avengers TV series. Ember revealed the singing side of her talents via a deal in 1968 with singer-songwriter/producer Kenny Lynch. Lynch came up with four very commercial songs for the recording sessions: ‘Here I Am’ ‘Better Than Losing You,’ ‘A Bad Time To Stop Loving Me,’ and ‘I’ll Just Pick Up My Heart.’ Linda’s next Ember session occurred in May 1970 in Beverly Hills, so, for completeness sake, they have extended the timeline to present those three songs in this compilation. Julie Rogers, a powerful singer with stunning looks, shot to fame in 1964 when her second Philips single, ‘The Wedding’ was a transatlantic hit both in the UK and USA. Her next contract was signed with Ember in 1969. Two sets of sessions that year produced the fourteen tracks that made up her album “Once More With Feeling,” presented here in its entirety. All recordings are mastered from tapes and the booklet is illustrated with sleeve and label shots. The original Ember records are highly collectable: so you can’t beat these great beat and rock collections from the Ember vaults. Nice shrink-wrapped slip-case packaging COMP CD $8 SKU:19204

BEYOND THE CALICO WALL - VA ( 60s psych ) Label:VOXX The good people who put together this compilation set out to accomplish no less daunting a task than collecting the most bizarre and extreme underground psychedelic music recorded in the 1960's, and, for the most part, the choices seem to be right on the money. The collection starts off with "The Trip" by Park Avenue Playground, a song that bursts out of the gate with an explosion of fuzz guitar, organ, and mad siren-like oscillating effects, coming at you from all directions, seemingly. Next up is "Suzie's gone" by Afterglow, definitely one of the weirdest singles ever. The singer moans "so...my...world...is...messed...up!" in the most detached voice possible over a staccato organ and drum part, leading to a guitar solo that soon collapses into no recognizable conventional song structure. No less amazing is "Mt. Olympus" by The Flower Power, which starts off as an innocuous and somewhat introspective sounding piece until a wild heavily chorused guitar break, which only slightly warns you of the totally anarchic feedback and free-form noise ending -- which goes on for over a minute in a 3:40 single! Then you get a bizarre sci-fi/horror tale in "The pulse" by Burritt Bradley, and an incredible reading of The Electric Prunes' "I had too much to dream last night" by Rasputin and the Mad Monks, with weird proto-techno sound effects, backwards vocals, and production effects making the backing track fade in and out, creating a disturbing sensory assault. Other highlights include "An experiment in terror" by The Greek Fountains, which is a strange polyrhythmic instrumental, and "Up in my mind" by The Spontaneous Generation, which surely has to rank as one of the most aggressive 60's psych records ever made, with waves of vibrato guitar and insistent wah wah riffing. Also worthwhile is "The electronic insides and metal complexion that make up Herr Dr. Krieg," by The Riders of the Mark, which musically isn't quite as strange as its title, but comes close! The weirdness factor decreases somewhat as the c.d. progresses, and a sloppy but straightforward cover of "In a gadda da vida" by Six Feet Under makes for a pretty uninteresting closer, but the good material here makes this an essential purchase. Buy it if you like psychedelia, experimental or Incredibly Strange Music. Robert Schell (Townsville, Texas) COMP CD $5 SKU:2151

GRAVEDIGGER V - All Black & Hairy (60 PEBBLES style Classic cave garage) BLUE Label:VOXX The one proper album the band released in its lifetime, All Black and Hairy is both perfectly named and perfectly performed -- if it's nothing but a re - All Black & Hairy LTD ED of 150 CLEAR BLUE VINYL! (60 style Classic cave garage ) -vivalist approach at heart, it's such a damn entertaining one that there's no cause for complaint. With its title track taken from the appropriately goonball back catalog of Screamin' Lord Sutch and its general snot-mouthed attitude from every last Nuggets and Pebbles selection ever, about the only thing missing are the lava lamps and garage stink. Saying the band uses the right combination of fuzztone guitars and echo and heavy frug rhythms is a bit like saying the sky is blue -- it's just one of those things to be expected -- but the sheer energy and abandon present keep everything from simply retracing the past to no point. Leighton's credit is for "lead screaming," and that about sums it up -- he's not so much singing as pulling off the ultimate teen-wannabe-Mick Jagger performance, only even more aggressively snotty. Ted Friedman's lead guitar solos with the right rave-up spirit and John Hanrattie keeps the core melodies going, while the Tom Ward/David Anderson rhythm section aims to get rears shaking instead of sitting. The album is half split between inspired originals (check out the concluding "Stoneage Stomp") and actual songs from the time, the latter resulting in fun versions of tracks like the Uncalled For's "Do Like Me" and Larry & the Bluenotes' "Night of the Phantom." About the only thing missing is the original studio recording of the band's best number, "It's Spooky," but anyone wanting a quick blast of '60s punk thrills filtered through later years could do much worse than to dig this one up. LP $15 SKU:16261

GREYLOCK MANSION-ST (underground PSYCH 68 w 3 inserts) Label:Lysergic Sound Unother buried treasure of pure underground psychedelia: GREYLOCK MANSION, who emerged loudly from Tucson, Arizona in 1968. The band's sound (as heard on the opening track of LSD's best-selling "St. Albert's Dream" compilation) is powerful, deep underground psych with thick, dominant funereal organ and distorted fuzz guitar and effects, backed by heavy precise drumming. The Doors and Iron Butterfly influences are evident, and a touch of early Black Sabbath’s slow grinding sludge rears its head at times.

For all the desired heaviness, which is plentiful, the lyrics might be even more impressive—dark, meaningful, thoughtful, masterfully constructed and thought provoking, with mystical, sci-fi and otherworldly themes like time travel, death, and other wicked inventiveness. It would be difficult to believe that Greylock Mansion's lyrics and music were written by a 19-year old, until you realize that the teen in question was Merl Reagle, soon to be a master wordsmith, raconteur—oh, and the most famous crossword puzzle author in the U.S. Reagle was syndicated in the largest newspapers in the country, made numerous television and movie appearances, and was even portrayed on the enormously popular TV show, The Simpsons.

•A true masterpiece of 60’s U.S. underground psychedelic rock, finally re-issued

•This is a fully licensed Lysergic Sound Distributors release, presented only as a limited vinyl release.

•Comes with three inserts! LP $24 SKU:17972

HACIENDA - Big Red and Barbacoa ( prod by Dan of the Black Keys ) (YELLOW VINYL ltd ed last copies ) Label:ALIVE BIG RED & BARBACOA is the second album by South Texas' HACIENDA, and like its predecessor Loud Is The Night (Alive 2008), it was produced by Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys. Recorded on the tail-end of a year playing clubs and festivals across North America, Australia and Europe (opening for Dan Auerbach and Dr. Dog, and more recently for Alberta Cross), this new album brings heavier grooves and flavor to the '60s harmonies sound the band is known for. The result is a blend of Tex-Mex roots rock, retro-pop and R&B that can only be described as South Texas Soul. BIG RED & BARBACOA captures the attitude of a band ready to throw pretension to the roadside and play rock'n'roll the way it was intended.

HACIENDA - Loud Is The Night LTD ED of 200 on green vinyl ( Beatles style pop prod by DAN OF THE BLACK KEYS ) - Label:ALIVE From first note to last, Loud Is The Night is rammed with youthful rock and roll that flails around like a nun with a fork in her eye, raw riffs tussling with sleek 60s harmonies and intricate pop melodies to create something that's more than a little special. - Bearded Magazine LP $16 SKU:14389

HANDSOME JACK -Everything's Gonna Be Alright (70s style blues fused rock and roll LtD ED STARBURST Label:ALIVE Here's what the media had to say about Handsome Jack's last album Do What Comes Naturally :

This record is probably more fun than the first Black Crowes record—which from an influence/aesthetics standpoint, it oddly evokes—and were it to bear a Harvest Records imprint and a 1970 copyright date, no one would bat an eye. Which must mean it’s really good. – ROLLING STONE

No pretense, no skinny pants, no Swatches to be seen. This is your dad’s rock and roll. And your dad was cooler than you. – GLORIOUS NOISE

This record rules. It’s an album for people who want stanky, swampy, dirty boogie. This one’s a keeper; trust us. You want standout tracks? Try all of ‘em. – PERFORMER MAGAZINE

Handsome Jack are mining a tradition, and Do What Comes Naturally digs solid ore from a deep vein… a celebration of laid-back but serious partying, and it'll make a fine soundtrack for your next celebration of the boogie. – ALL MUSIC

Recalls greasy '70s stoner stuff — Allman Brothers et al. – MILWAUKEE JOURNAL-SENTINEL

The music of this album seamlessly flows through deep dark mid-tempo boogies, smoky upbeat burners and soulful feel-good rockers all with a natural ease… damn catchy. – GLIDE MAGAZINE

Handsome Jack's music resonates with the atmospheres of rock's great ballrooms - the Avalon, Fillmore, Winterland, Agora, Grande - and the bands who rocked them. They call their music ‘boogie soul,’ but the boogie gave birth to rock and their souls are plugged into an extension cord that stretches from Buffalo to the Delta. – NO DEPRESSION LP $20 SKU:20238

HANUMAN- ST (1971 German prog Krautrock)180 GRAM Label:MISSING VINYL The label says: “Hanuman was a post MURPHY BLEND, that recorded this excellent German progressive Krautrock album on the KUCKUCK label in 1971. The lyrics are strongly politically and socially engaged, while it is musically very similar to the first two OUT OF FOCUS albums, but more lyrical. This album, is a perfect example of the early 70s German progressive Krautrock scene and should be part of every serious 70s progressive rock collection. Limited edition, deluxe 180g vinyl, exact reproduction of the original first pressing. Classic German Krautrock album from 1971. Post Murphy Blend outfit. Fully authorized. Limited, deluxe exact reissue on 180g vinyl. Expertly remastered from the mastertapes. First ever exact reissue.” Additional information from the Lion Productions archives: Berlin band formed by Murphy Blend organist Wolf-Rüdiger Uhlig in May 1971 at a festival in Munich, along with a trio of jazz and blues musicians. Hanuman took the Murphy Blend sound, sans the classical style, and developed a sound that hinted at that of Out Of Focus, although with a more lyrical and offbeat sensibility. Without Uhlig, who left after this album, Hanuman metamorphosized into Lied Des Teufels LP $19 SKU:20930

HAUNTED - Blow my Little Mind to Bits -LAST COPIES of great 60s garage-Label:VOXX LAST COPIES One of Canada's most popular homegrown rock groups in the '60s, though they made no inroads to the rest of North America. From the English-speaking community of Montreal, the group was very explicit in their desire to emulate the Rolling Stones, and most of their 1966-1968 singles (as well as their sole LP, from 1967) were in a raunchy R&B/blues-rock style. Their most successful single, "1-2-5," gained fame when it was reissued on one of the first Pebbles compilations of garage singles in the '70s. All of their material was reissued in the '80s. LP $15 SKU:8001

Heath Green and The Makeshifters’ self-titled debut album will be released early 2017 on Alive Naturalsound records. Check them out performing live in the studio for the Spectra Sonic Sound Sessions here. Prepare to be blown away! LP $15 SKU:18300

HENRY’S FUNERAL SHOE- Donkey Jacket Ltd ed clear vinyl,(SLIGHT CORNER TWEAK) Label:Alive A raw, fuzzed-out, garage-boogie attitude and a riff-o-rama sensibility. Their sound can be heavy as a 2000 lb. budgie, menacing as a back-alley swaying drunk, and when they crank up the riffing or let rip with some high-octane slide, it’s as transporting as anything by post-Mississippi Fred McDowell” – PopMatters

Following on from a highly-praised debut, South Wales duo Henry’s Funeral Shoe unleash their distinctive punk-energy-blues-drenched-rock ‘n’ roll, on second album ‘Donkey Jacket’. With their incendiary guitars and hard rock-like energy, fans of Radio Moscow, Left Lane Cruiser, and The Black Diamond Heavies will find much to like in Henry’s Funeral Shoe. The duo has shared the stage with classic acts such as The Groundhogs, and Status Quo, and will soon be playing with Ten Years After.

Comprised of brothers Aled and Brennig Clifford, this second offering evokes images of the Deep South, rather than the Welsh Valleys from which they hail.

‘Donkey Jacket’ features a number of guest appearances from a plethora of acclaimed musicians, including long time Van Morrison collaborator John ‘Ned’ Edwards on harmonica, slide guitar and mandolin, Pete Hurley of legendary 70s Welsh band Lone Star on bass, and Justin Beynon of the Broken Vinyl Club tinkling the ivories.

Taking its name from the coat worn by Welsh miners, ‘Donkey Jacket’, is a collection of rousing numbers ranging from the hard-hitting ‘Love Is A Fever’, 'Dog Scratch Ear' and ‘Anvil & Chains’, to their contrasting softer side on acoustic-driven tracks ‘Heart on Fire’ and ‘Across The Sky’.

Henry’s Funeral Shoe recorded the album in Wales with Tim Hammill at the helm, whilst mixing duties were undertaken by Jim Diamond (Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, The Go) in Detroit. LP $20 SKU:13352

HOLLIS BROWN GETS LOADED By Bill Bentley, Columnist
June 30, 2014

Hollis Brown, Gets Loaded. Defying the odds of gravity and greatness, the Brooklyn-based Hollis Brown band records all the songs on one of the perfect rock albums, Velvet Underground’s Loaded, and still manages to hold their head high. So what may have looked like a long shot on the assembly line turns into an inspired piece of music-making. When the Velvets’ fourth (and last) studio album was released in 1970, it finally looked like the ultra-boundary-breaking New York outfit would get their due. Except for one small problem: the Velvet Underground had already broken up. So soon-to-be classic Lou Reed songs “Sweet Jane,” “Rock and Roll,” “New Age” and others were left in the cold light of winter to die, only to live now and see another day.

Now that Hollis Brown has decided to do their own take of the entire album, it’s clear this is rock that has never been surpassed. By anyone. As much as what Hollis Brown has accomplished by putting their own life into these ten songs, it is also a mighty display of courage to even attempt such a thing, proving that lives are still being saved by rock and roll — and Lou Reed.

RIDE ON THE TRAIN
BY Greg Jones
Ride on the Train is an album that a lot of people are going to love for its multi-generational appeal. But besides that, it’s just good rock music. It’s hard to peg a specific sound on it. There are no “skip” songs on this album though. Be prepared to keep it in your player, on repeat, for a long time. Oh, and the next time one of your friends says “they just don’t make music like they used to,” you slap them and hand them this album. But make sure you slap them first, for dramatic effect.

Hollis Brown have a classic sound that is sure to satisfy a variety of music fans. There’s a certain timeless element to their sound that will have typical “classic rock” fans happy. But what they also have going for them is a refreshing newness. They sound like a band that you’ve heard before, but odds are you haven’t. That’s because Hollis Brown reflect some of the greatest bands in rock music from Tom Petty to The Eagles to Lynrd Skynrd.

Hollis Brown’s “Down on Your Luck” sounds like it could have come straight out of 1966. It makes the listener feel like that “cold wind blowin’” is out the windows of an old Camaro or Mustang. “When the night runs cold and you’re down on your luck…” highlights the theme of the songwriter being available to help. But really what makes this song so good isn’t lyrical complexity, but rather a Creedence kind of joy. If you played this at a party and told the crowd it was a lost Creedence reel, you wouldn’t get much criticism. LP $15 SKU:16288

HYPSTRZ - Hypstrization (Incendiary '70s punk-era performances of '60s garage classics) BLUE VINYL Label:BOMP Records The 1980 garage/soul gem by this legendary Minneapolis outfit, originally released on Voxx and out of print for decades. Entirely remastered from the original master tapes, restored to its original artwork, and lovingly pressed on clear blue vinyl.

REVIEW:
It's ironic that '60s revivalist bands often produce records that are as rare and difficult to find as the records from which their material is sourced. Such is the case for this Midwest band's fantastic 1980 Bomp LP, "Hypstrization!" Despite the backing from Bomp, the album went unnoticed by many ardent garage rock fans, only to attain a level of cult desirability among collectors in later years. The band themselves were an anachronism, reviving mid-60s garage rock in the teeth of late-70s punk, thrilling and confounding audiences in fraternal halls, local ballrooms and bowling alleys throughout the upper Midwest. What made it work, and what comes across so clearly on these live recordings, is that the group was fully committed to the sounds they produced, and the fuel of fellow punk bands (both local like The Suicide Commandos, and god-like, such as The Ramones) made their snarling, thrashing garage rock a lot more than a pose.

Bomp's original LP is included in full as this CD's opening 15 tracks. It's a sweaty evening of garage rock classics - whether or not they were garage rock in the first place. In addition to mid-60s punk anthems like "Riot on Sunset Strip," "Talk Talk" and "96 Tears," the band revs up the soul side "In the Midnight Hour" and "I Go Crazy," and takes The Small Faces' "All or Nothing" out for a heartfelt spin. The non-stop assault, punctuated by occasional song count-offs, follows the performance template the band picked up from The Ramones, as does their combination of hammering guitars topped with melodic vocals.

This reissue expands upon the original LP with 18 additional live selections from the same pair of nights at Jay's Longhorn. These extra tracks include more garage-ified soul/funk tunes ("Hold on I'm Coming" "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag"), Nuggets/Pebbles standards ("Action Woman" "Sometimes Good Guys Don't Wear White"), well-picked British Invasion winners ("Come See Me" "66-5-4-3-2-1" and "I'm Not Talking"), rockabilly rave-ups (Eddie Cochran's "C'mon Everybody"), and some '60s chart oddities (Sgt. Barry Sandler's "Ballad of the Green Berets" and The Shangri-Las "Remember (Walking in the Sand"). Closing out the collection is a trio of live tracks waxed in 2004 (including a stomping of The Sonics' "The Witch"), proving that the band rocks just as frenetically now as they did twenty-five years ago. This is a must have for garage rock fans, original or neo.- hyperbolium LP $15 SKU:11922

ILIAS ASVESTOPOULOS & 2002 --O Siderenios Anthropos -The Iron Man( Great Greek psych/prog 1974)-Label:APS NOVA (Greece) Ilias Asvestopoulos was a previous member of the garage band Persons (with members of the legendary Socrates) playing mostly covers of known hits (i.e. 96 Tears). He founded 2002 in 1974 (!), and together they recorded two albums. It’s the second LP, "O Siderenios Anthropos" (The Iron Man) that gets people excited. It’s an essential gem with great guitar /organ work. Not a stoned psych jam album here, but a very enjoyable psych/prog LP typical of the period—but really ahead of it's time for the just "out of the junta" Greek reality of this partciular period of history. A mega-limited numbered edition of 250 copies LP $22 SKU:20960

JOHN THE CONQUEROR - ST LTD EDITION of 100 on MELLOW YELLOW VINYL LAST COPIES! - Label:ALIVE John The Conqueror’s self-titled debut album is an amalgamation of the many sounds and styles (old and new) mined from both the North and the South. Cousins Pierre Moore (vocals & guitar) and Michael Gardner (drums) are natives of Jackson, MS, while bassist Ryan Lynn hails from Philly – where the trio now call home. Together they mix a bedrock of raw deep blues with funk, soul, punk and scuzzed-up rock-n-roll into one helluva potent musical Molotov cocktail. Moore and Gardner have been playing together in bands since their college days in Oxford, MS, and Moore learned to play guitar in his early teens from a homeless man who slept in the back room of an auto repair shop.

"The trio from Mississippi, now based in Philly, have the smoothness of classic 50’s soul mixed with a southern twang." – Knuckle Rumbler

"It’s all smokestacks, greasy ball bearings, mudslides, and corn liquor swilled from mason jars; raggedly scorching guitar riffs, a thunderous rhythm section, and howled vocals. ‘Say What You Want’ rockets me off my rear every time." – Brian Greene / Happening Magazine

"Leader Pierre Moore has a matter-of-fact singing voice, tasteful six-string skills and a tuneful writing style that balances licks and melody and avoids classic rock overload." – Michael Toland / The Big Takeover.

"They will bring you from the church to the juke joint in four quick minutes." – Mad Chicago

"John The Conqueror's new LP is downright street smart funky." – Jeffrey Morgan's Media Blackout.

"Pierre Moore is a charismatic frontman, strutting the stage, ripping away at guitar licks and belting out dynamic vocals. Joining Moore are his cousin Michael Gardner, a force of nature on drums, and local guy Ryan Lynn, who brings a rumbling low end to the mix." – The Key WXPN LP $20 SKU:14630
