AYERS, JAY - ST (1980 yacht rock perfection)-SAALE! Label:TAM Jay Ayers’ self-titled album from 1980 opens with 'Midnight Lady,' three minutes of yacht rock perfection. High-pitched doo-doos and la-la-las hover overhead as the supple rhythm section lays a rock-solid foundation and Ayers yearns desperately for love, even if it’s from a pro. Prominent acoustic guitars give the song rhythmic propulsion like some of the best country-rock hits of the era, and an unexpected clarinet appears midway through to sweeten the mix. 'Easy Way Out' connects, delicately addressing depression with an appropriately melancholy backing and topped with a memorable vocal hook from Ayers in the way he sings the song’s title. The mood suddenly changes on side B, opening with a lively mashup of 'Different Drum' and 'Mr. Tambourine Man.' The guitars are jangly and the sound is more primitive. When he sings, Ayers sounds like a filthy drunkard wailing for quarters on a busy street corner. Instead of shortening the songs and butting them together to create a traditional medley, the tunes are carefully interwoven together, and the seams never show. The more reckless sound on side B shows more personality than the first half. The cover of 'American Girl’ perhaps doesn’t contain the conviction of the original, but the Petty-influenced 'It’s So Hard' is an engaging power-popper with some nifty vocal interplay. I wonder if the mix of the slithery 'One More Night' was intentional. The distant instruments and echo-heavy vocal create a smoky haze, enhancing the lyrics about foolishly holding on to someone." LP $25 SKU:24382

ELECTRIC LOOKING GLASS - Death of a Season ( Bee Gees, Left Banke and Kinks circa '68 influenced) Label:HYPNOTIC BRIDGE Electric Looking Glass are a baroque pop group from Los Angeles whose shared love of early Bee Gees, Left Banke and Kinks circa '68 informs their phenomenal songs. LOOSE - Untamed - 4 songs (2000 Italian punk release)- Label:ROCKIN HOUSE Italian swagger punks that sound like they like to fight. "Untamed!" is a fitting title, what with the gang-land vox and the psychoactive guitars, and Loose play some seriously muscular sleazepunk here. Of the four tracks, I'm gonna finger "Cool as Fuck" as the highlight, both for it's winning subject matter and it's punchy chorus, but any of 'em ought to get your motor running. 45 RPM $5 SKU:24256

DRUIDS-Burnt Offering( 1969 acoustic folk) -Label:ATOM The Druids were a superb acoustic folk quintet formed in 1969, who started a little too late to achieve the major popularity of outfits like Steeleye Span and Fairport Convention, although they were very well respected across the UK. The cover design, containing The Wicker Colossus of the Druids (depicting a scene like something out of the denouement to The Wicker Man), showed that the group meant business, and they had the musical smarts to back it up. There's not a dull or predictable moment here, whether they're singing of lust (‘The Cuckoo's Nest’), plague victims (‘Gabriel John’), or romantic woes (‘The Butcher and the Parson'), as well as a straight acoustic rendition of one version of ‘A Sailor's Life,’ a song that became something of a concert standard for Fairport Convention as an extended electric piece. Itinerant fiddler Dave Broughton joined them, and in 1970, while appearing in a documentary film about English folk musicians, they met fifth member Judi Longden, who added her voice to the proceedings. With their reliance on acoustic instruments, the Druids were far more tradition-based than either Fairport Convention or Steeleye Span. Their repertory consisted of traditional English, Scottish, Welsh, and Irish songs arranged for four voices, and their music had a pleasingly archaic feel, not resembling folk-rock at all. If anything, they sounded more like the kind of outfit that A.L. Lloyd or Ralph Vaughan Williams (editors of the definitive collection of English folk songs) would have approved of, without a trace of uncalled for elegance or pretentiousness. Burnt Offerings is the first time on CD and deserves to be out there sharing a piece of Folk history that allows the world to see how it is done. CD $12 SKU:24840

HEYOKA - Spirit of Revelation (legendary Texas 1977)-Label:SHROOMANGEL Tri-fold digipak CD version of this legendary Texas band's music, tracks recorded between the years 1977 and 1986, all previously unissued. "Mention Heyoka to any self respecting rock music head in Texas and they'll tell you about this legendary band, the greatest unsigned band ever to originate from that state. Heyoka captured the imagination of fans with a back story fueled by mystical Native American folklore and peyote dreams. They opened for Rush at Randy's Rodeo, then managed to get plum slots opening for Sammy Hagar, Van Halen, Be-Bop Deluxe, Golden Earring, Budgie, Trapeze and Rick Derringer. The music video for "Video Madness" made it onto MTV—but was then unceremoniously banned. "Heyoka, like Ultra in San Antonio... really should have made it but didn't," concert promoter Jack Orbin says. "I think they were ahead of their time musically. They were progressive metal, and that's what exploded out of San Antonio. They were innovators." The music is reminiscent of Jethro Tull and Kansas, but retaining a unique quality all its own, evoking Native American imagery under the mystical guide of Black Elk. Tracks all from masters, recorded between the years 1977 and 1986, all previously unissued. CD $10 SKU:19959

LOST SOULS--ST mid 60s unknown U.S. Brit Invasion/ psych) SAALE!Label:LION The Lost Souls never released any records, yet the meager recorded evidence that survives indicates that they were one of the finest unknown American groups of the mid-'60s, able to write both catchy British Invasion-type rockers and, in their latter days, experimental psychedelic pieces with unusual tempo changes and song structures. The band were also unusual in their occasional embellishment of the typical period guitar-bass-drums lineup with flute, sax, and mandolin. Although popular in their Cleveland hometown, they broke up in 1968 to attend college. Rhythm guitarist Denny Carleton, who wrote and sang some of their best material, went on to briefly join The Choir, their chief (and more successful) rivals." —Richie Unterberger The music scene in Cleveland in the mid to late 1960’s was ripe with talent: the James Gang with Joe Walsh and Glenn Schwartz, The Choir, Eric Carmen (pre-Raspberries), Glass Harp with Phil Keaggy, the Damnation of Adam Blessing… and the Lost Souls. Of all those bands, only the Lost Souls never released a record. Then again, they were in high school, trying to navigate dress codes and bullies—and playing in front of a couple thousand fans when not suspended. Sure, they lost a battle of the bands at Teen Fair 1968, but it was to the James Gang with Joe Walsh. And somehow it is the Lost Souls who emerge from that time and place with the greatest mystique and some of the most adventurous music, music which few have heard. Lost Souls main songwriter Denny Carleton released a cassette of the band’s original recordings in 1984. It received airplay on hundreds of college and public radio stations in the USA (and around the world), and garnered glowing reviews… and that was it, until now.Not only is this the first time the music of the Lost Souls has been available since that cassette, our Lion Productions edition is the first release for many additional Lost Souls cuts, including alternate versions of key tracks like the insightful ‘Things That Are Important’ and ‘I’m Falling’ (the closest to a hit the band ever had), all taken from the original tapes and carefully mastered. Seven bonus tracks highlight the work of Lost Soul's main songwriter Denny Carleton (one-time member of The Choir, and more surprisingly, punk legends the Pagans); selections by The Choir, Moses, Milk and Carleton, many in all possible low-fi glory, recorded on various 4-Track devices, ranging from power-pop to grimy garage.•Whopping 32-page booklet has the full story of the band and info on the recordings by Carlton
•Includes a multitude of unseen photos from his personal archive
•Carefully remastered from the original tapes (+ the occasional post-Lost Souls 45 single)

RICH HOPKINS & LUMINARIOS - Buried Treasures-Label:SAN JACINTO "If Neil Young released Buried Treasures, it would be hailed as a return to form. And when Drive-By Truckers evidence similarly unselfconscious immediacy, we praise their ability to inhabit characters. But Rich Hopkins is for real, a regular guitar-toting guy who grew a conscience in the Peace Corps, cowriting his best songs to date with his hair-salon-owner girlfriend, Lisa Novak. The Tucson troubadour’s 28th studio set offers Crazy Horse-style workouts and plangent psychedelic feedback jams, but, as shown by the bleakly beautiful Friend of the Shooter, they are increasingly engaged with the southwest’s dark underbelly." —Stewart Lee"It’s a wonder Rich Hopkins finds the time. When not playing with the Sidewinders or the Sand Rubies, he remains the prolific and creative backbone of The Luminarios. This time around he’s turned the guitars up again for a psychedelic mash of band jams and slow-burning grooves best typified by the brooding, elongated epic, Friend Of The Shooter, which sits well in Hopkins’ canon of storytelling songs. Outta My Head (Outta My Mind) is the flip side to Hopkins’ denser jams with its 60s pop rock feel, while Strutter glides along on a colourful swell of organ with Lisa Novak’s chiming vocals bringing the chorus to life. It seems churlish to not mention the extra disc (A Long Walk Home) too, a set of field songs from Hopkins’ time spent with the Peace Corps in rural Paraguay, both scratchy demos and studio recordings and all with a charm of their own." —Classic Rock CD $10 SKU:25060
SAND RUBIES (SIDEWINDERS) -Cuacha (First-time reissue of this 1987 sleeper rural rock classic)Label:SAN JACINTO More than one observer of the Arizona rock scene has noted that had the Sidewinders not been derailed by legal and label problems, the Tucson quartet might've beaten neighboring Tempe's Gin Blossoms to the brass ring. Or maybe it was just a case of the too-good/too-early American band syndrome in the conservative pre-Nirvana era. Formed in 1986 around the songwriting core of guitarist Richard Hopkins and vocalist David Slutes, the Sidewinders quickly garnered local acclaim and recorded ¡Cuacha! for Hopkins' own San Jacinto label. (San Jacinto has released numerous regional records, including some by the Gin Blossoms.) The album has its share of jangly folk-rock moments instantly familiar to any fan of mid-'80s R.E.M. Yet its traditional feel — part psychedelic pop and part dustbowl blues — suggests influences stretching back at least two decades... Hopkins' expansive "big guitar" references Neil Young and Crazy Horse; his uncomplicated melodies are as immediate and hummable as Tom Petty's. And Slutes' enigmatic lyrical concerns (the drug of love, the mystic powers of the sun and moon, the dark edges of the soul) — delivered in the best romantic baritone since Neil Diamond— make for a charismatic combination." —Fred Mills, Trouser Press CD $10 SKU:25059

THREE HEADED DOG-Hound of Hades (UK 70s underground)-Label:AUDIO ARCHIVES THREE HEADED DOG-Hound of Hades A mysterious three-piece from Birmingham, Three-Headed Dog played underground hard-rock, clearly influenced by other contemporaries from the Birmingham rock scene such as Judas Priest and Black Sabbath and Wishbone Ash. Three-Headed Dog were among the more obscure acts playing a circuit which included bands like Iron Claw, Necromandus and Flying Hat Band. Before disappearing in the mist of time, they left behind an ultra rare demo tape - recorded in 1973 - which included a couple of cover versions from Wild Turkey and Edgar Broughton Band along with self-penned material. This CD also features a few bonus tracks from other rare bands of the era discovered in the studio's archives. CD $12 SKU:24869
CONGREGATION FOR ANTI FLIRTS -The McAllen, Texas Teen Scene 1965-1967 -Label:CICADELIC RECORDS \Subtitled: The McAllen, Texas Teen Scene 1965-1967. "From 1965 to 1967, McAllen was the happening scene for some of the wildest music to emanate from Texas in the '60s. The label that played host to these bands was Jimmy Nichol's Pharaoh Records and this album contains the best the label had to offer. Not only were the records superlative, but today they are considered some of the rarest finds for collectors of '60s garage bands. Singles by Pharaoh artists such as The Headstones, The Cavaliers, and Christopher and The Souls go for over a grand apiece, if they can be located. Congregation For Anti-Flirts Inc. also contains in depth coverage on the McAllen bands with rare photos, radio charts, and interviews, making this album a journey to pharaoh's valley that can't be missed. OUR BRILLIANT CAREERS -Cherry Red Rarities 1981-83-Label:CHERRY RED Cherry Red carved out an odd niche for itself apart from the general post-punk flow, thanks largely to eccentric A&R man Mike Always, whose tastes leaned towards melody, Englishness, and the 1960’s. Cherry red became a home for the dashing, debonair whimsy of he Monochrome Set, the mopy bedsit introspection of Eyeless in Gaza, jazzy-folky singer-songwriters Tracey Thorn and Ben Watt (separately and together as Everything But the Girl), and the Television/Velvets descended, plangent splendor of Felt. Although “Pillows and Prayers” is the best-known sampler of the label, its precursor “Perspectives and Distortions” (1981) includes many non-Cherry Red artists, which makes it very interesting; and “Our Brilliant Careers” (2003) scoops up archival arcane. It includes rare tracks by successful Cherry Red artists like Everything But The Girl (plus solo material from both Tracey Thorn and Ben Watt), The Nightingales and The Monochrome Set, plus many more. Most people probably know Five Or Six from their off-key but charming opener 'Portrait' from “Pillows and Prayers”; here we have six like low-key and absorbing tracks from them, most of which have never been on CD: 'Think' and 'Theme' are instrumentals that will surprise a few. There are also three early songs by Ben Watt described modestly by himself as 'dreary and tuneless'. Beautiful instrumental version of 'The Thousand Guitars of St. Dominiques' by the Fantastic Something ends up as the most surprising track—a high point of the collection.” Impressive and intriguing archive collection of rare recordings. ACROSS THE WATER-ST (1975 prog rock rarity)Remastered, Gatefold-Label:SEELIE COURT Split LP has neo-classical prog rock epic on side one, and “gorgeous” downer folk on side two. "An unknown and precious album recorded in 1975 by two friends who recorded one side each, they made just two acetates and then handmade beautiful covers from two enlargements of a photograph of the Isles of St Kilda. Side one is a neo classical prog rock epic in the style of Renaissance and Continuum, inspired by the wild and pagan isles of St Kilda where, as a 16 yr old, the composer Peter McKerrow was taken by military launch to conduct a census on the rare Soay Sheep that live there. A storm blew away his tent on the first night. The other side is by his Canadian pal who attended the same Uni in england, deeply homesick for Canada and surviving a broken relationship these songs are melancholic and Leonard Cohen-esque. The original Lp is astonishingly gorgeous and one of the most desirable artifacts of the prog era.” Gatefold edition, limited to 500x copies. LP $28 SKU:24143

ANT TRIP CEREMONY - 24 Hours w inner sleeve. (Superb Psych US 1968 ) Label:VINYL LOVERS 180 gram LP + printed innersleeve. A fleeting moment of inspired folk rock/psychedelia, recorded at Oberlin College in 1968 by four college students and one local teen. The band was the brainchild of student and guitarist Steve DeTray who had just returned to school after a brief hiatus in Utah, where he was undoubtedly inspired by the whole West Coast psychedelic rock scene. Upon returning to Oberlin DeTray recruited some friends who had already been playing together in a blues band. After a year spent playing a mix of covers and original material, mostly at on campus and off-campus parties, the boys decide to commit their moment in history to vinyl, recording "24 Hours" in two sessions with the help of fellow student David Crosby (not of CSN&Y fame, as is sometimes claimed). The original pressing was just 300 copies that were then sold mainly to friends and local fans, and soon became one of those rare collectibles from which several low-quality bootlegs were made. This album has been digitally remastered and features the original sleeve art. LP $24 SKU:24512
AURA- Sativa (1974 SF psych funk masterpiece) - Label:LION Official replica vinyl edition of this oft-sampled slab of Bay Area history, a psych funk masterpiece that cannot be denied. Aura formed in 1974 and played extensively throughout Northern California. By 1976, the band recorded their first and only album at Pacific Recording Studio in San Mateo. The original title of the album was meant to be "Sativa", but out of fear that promoting the joys of marijuana would be too controversial, the band omitted the title and just left it as "Aura". Over the ensuing decades, the Aura album has grown in stature to become a major soul/funk collector's item. It features a number of major funk tracks plus funky ballads with female vocals. Standouts include 'Sativa' (replete with water-pipe sound effects and blistering guitar), and the manic fuzz-guitar jam 'Skyrocket.' Old style tip-on jacket and quality limited edition vinyl pressing, mastered from the original tapes. LP $14 SKU:19263

BARRACUDAS - ST -( POWERPOP ltd ed OF 100 color vinyl) -Label:NDN As a cursory look at radio playlists and cult whisperings will attest, The Barracudas reappearance after so long could not be better timed. Garage music is in fashion (again) and so is surf (well, Brian Wilson, and let's face it they might as well be synonymous). Power pop, likewise, from a 45 grave, has risen to reassert its importance. Indeed, all the styles the band have mastered and made their own are now current and selling. And another thing: The Barracudas sounds younger than yesterday but with experience supplying an edge that cuts across time to the heart of the band. LP $10 SKU:4392

CASE - Blackwood (primitive 1971) Color insert includes notes by the band + rare photos • Limited to 500 copies -Label:LION . • Terrific primitive album recorded in 1971 by some very advanced high-schoolers during their Christmas vacation, self-released on the legendary RPC Records label Almost completely unknown and rarely spoken of album of nine original tracks, self-released on the legendary RPC Records label by a group of self-motivated teens from Pennsylvania. Luckily for lovers of musical mayhem, the Case got access to their school music room and a four-track recorder over a Christmas break in 1971. A rock-solid, hard-driving rhythm section lays down the necessary underpinning for moody organ and beautifully-toned guitar. There is sheer joy at play here, a kind of rock 'n' roll exuberance—with ample raw talent and wicked riffing—which shines through on every cut. Terrific raw, primitive album, simultaneously loose and intense, like the Velvet Underground at their best LP $15 SKU:15626
GOOD MISSIONARIES-Pylons (long lost 80s post punk classic)Label:LION /COLOR TAPES Limited edition of 500 copies . Includes poster insert with archive band photos and slee• The hipness and success of London punk-explosion photocopy fanzine Sniffin’ Glue was almost entirely due to the irreverent, pugnacious sincerity of its founder/spark-plug Mark Perry. That Perry should form a band (Alternative TV) seemed a natural progression; that it was any good at all a surprise; that it maintained a stance utterly disdainful of compromise a small miracle.”The Good Missionaries emerged, phoenix-like, from the ashes of Alternative TV (ATV). They released one live album “Fire From Heaven,” before ATV founder Mark Perry left. Ex-ATV guitarist/vocalist Dave George and bassist Keith Rodway continued the band, with several line-up changes during those days. The Good Missionaries toured and gigged with such bands as The Fall, The Pop Group, Crass, Scritti Politti, Delta Five, Poison Girls, Nik Turner’s Inner City Unit and The Transmitters. Which in retrospect makes sense, as their post-punk/dub/experimental inclinations dovetails perfectly with the music those more storied bands (more successful bands) were making at the time. The Good Missionaries released several singles on their own Unnormality label, before splitting in 1982. LP $21 SKU:25096
HOLLINS & STARR-Sidewalks Talking (Acid ARchives fave!) Label:LION An album sure to appeal to fans of acid folk, popsike, and even those who like jazzy funk. A trace or two of Arthur Lee and Love at their best (‘Krishna Dov’ would not sound out of place on “Forever Changes,” for example), with dashes of maybe Terry Callier in some of the jazzier tunes.“Unique blend… with a lovely dreaming, drifting vibe” – the Acid Archives;“Many diverse influences from pop-psych, mystical mellow passages, quasi-classical touches, delightful ethereal flute, trance-like vocals and fuzz guitar… there is much to appreciate on this largely undiscovered gem” – Fuzz, Acid & Flowers. LP $15 SKU:25097
PTARMIGAN - ST ( 1972 hypnotic stoner style w inserts and photos) Label:LION 2018 ltd ed of 300 copies Hypnotic, mystical, largely instrumental tracks, all based on a complex interplay of recorder, hand drums and acoustic guitar—one of those hidden gems that make life better when you discover them all these years later. Ptarmigan recorded the basic tracks for what would eventually become their only album in 1972. It then took the band’s producer and manager, renowned flautist Paul Horn, more than a year to find a label willing to release such unusual music. Finally, in 1974, Columbia Records released Ptarmigan’s album to critical acclaim, and minimal sales. The music of Ptarmigan is deep and authentic and intimate; it's reflective sounds are well suited to meditating on a landscape, an emotion, a bottle of wine, or maybe while staring at a flickering candle. Sometimes it is free-flowing and jazz-oriented; at other times it has the mystical feel of a shamanistic ceremony, fueled by Eastern-tinged harmonies. But in the end, this album is about the sea: Ptarmigan was, after all, from Vancouver Island, and the musicians were well-versed in the contradictory moods of the surrounding ocean. Rated by many as the best "folk/progressive" and/or "folk/psych" album ever made. As one contemporary review said, this is "music from musicians, for musicians, late-at-night, last joint music." Our Lion Productions reissue comes with a massive fold-out insert which includes lyrics, liner notes from the band, and a multitude of photos and historical mementos.•Rated by many as the best "folk/progressive" and/or "folk/psych" album ever made•From the master tapes •Limited second press of 300x copies •Huge insert comes with lyrics, liner notes from the band, and more LP $23 SKU:16108
