BLACK SABBATH- 1970-1978 -Symptom of the Universe -2 CD SET Label:RHINO NOTE: Archive copy previously owned by either the owner of ALIVE or BOMP , unsealed - CDs mint, slight corner crunch on box and cds. This 29-track collection gathers the key tracks from Black Sabbath's earliest days and most popular era with Ozzy Osbourne as co-founder and frontman. Includes the rare ""Evil Woman,"" a non-LP single available on compact disc for the first time in the United States. Completely besting the once-classic and classically named best-of, We Sold Our Souls for Rock 'n' Roll, Symptom of the Universe captures one of rock's heaviest tidal forces in all their glory--and in some more compromising moments. Ranging from the eponymous dirge that opens the set to the boogie-laden energy of more minor Sabbath gems like "Evil Woman" and "After Forever," this two-disc overview doesn't skimp on stone-cold gems like "Paranoid," "War Pigs," "Iron Man," and "Sabbath Bloody Sabbath." The second CD serves up the solo acoustic "Snowblind," a piano-and-Ozzy interlude, "Laguna Sunrise" (from the album Black Sabbath, Vol. 4), and the silly, aptly named "Fluff." Here the quartet reaches beyond their grasp, eschewing the grinding, hefty sound that fit Ozzy's flat vocal delivery like a glove; this stuff isn't great, but it's revealing. Decades after their debut, Sabbath's dystrophic rejoinder to '60s and '70s rock still energize nearly all hard rock. So this is rock history, and a blast at that. --Andrew Bartlett CD $20 SKU:25467

LEONARD COHEN- SONGS OF-Label:SONY NOTE: Archive copy previously owned by either the owner of ALIVE or BOMP , unsealed but mint. jDigipack.. Time has been extraordinarily kind to Songs of Leonard Cohen. While it attracted considerable fanfare upon its release in 1968, not everyone was immediately captured by its dusky charms. Randy Newman, for one, couldn't resist the temptation to parody "Suzanne," the album's brooding opener, on his 12 Songs album. (Conversely, director Robert Altman brilliantly drew upon the dirges here for the soundtrack to his classic anti-western, McCabe and Mrs. Miller.) But what some once found to be pretentious and affected has come to feel penetrating and ageless. Seeded with what have become signature songs of the Canadian wordsmith ("Sisters of Mercy," "Hey, That's No Way to Say Goodbye," "So Long, Marianne"), the album has a narcotic quality that owes as much to producer/musical director John Simon's inspired folk-baroque soundscapes as to Cohen's lofty lyrics and earth-bound vocals. --Steven Stolder CD $5 SKU:25471

HEDGEHOPPERS - Hey! (UK 60s pop psych ) Label:FRESH Includes bonus tracks, rare photos and comprehensive liner notes. UK 60s pop outfit (previously known as Hedgehoppers Anonymous) goes psych with elements of country rock, prog and jazz. After one-hit wonders Hedgehoppers Anonymous disbanded in the mid-60s, musicians headed by lead singer Phil Tunstall and Mick Matthews took on the name and found success in South Africa. The original Hedgehoppers Anonymous found fame with a protest song ‘It's Good News Week,’ which entered the Top 10 in 1965. Although the band were playing widely, they were enjoying limited success, until, by a stroke of luck, Decca in South Africa re-released some old tracks, leading to the offer of a tour there in 1969. While there, Matthews wrote the South African hit ‘Mary Mary.’ The revised line up, now called just Hedgehoppers, found unexpected success in South Africa between 1969-1971. With audiences growing, the band looked destined for continuing success. But hopes were dashed when Phil Tunstall died in a road accident, just as they were due to appear at South Africa's equivalent of Woodstock in May 1970. The band recruited singer Alan Avon to replace Tunstall, and an album “Hey!” was recorded for and released by CBS in 1971. Both it and the single from it did well in the South African charts. Sadly, another death hit the band when Bill Honeyman died in a second road accident in 1972; and the band lost heart, to fold shortly after. The re-release has been welcomed by rock music journalist and historian Nick Warburton, who said that the tracks are "…a masterful collection of soulful ballads and rock-orientated material, mixing covers of Stephen Stills's ‘Rock 'N' Roll Woman’ with a frantic take on George Gershwin's ‘Summertime,’ and Matthews' strong originals." Includes bonus tracks, rare photos and comprehensive liner notes. CD $14 SKU:13493

HELL PREACHERS INC /UGLY CUSTARD - Supreme Psychedelic Underground/ Psicosis (UK 60s psych, two great LPS on one CD! ) in mini lp sleeve -Label:GEAR FAB "From the UK, two great psych LPs on one CD, in mini-LP cardboard sleeve format. The Hell Preachers, Inc. were rumored to have had Deep Purple members Ritchie Blackmore, Jon Lord, and Ian Paice on some of these tracks but all three have persistently denied this. Ugly Custard featured the great guitar playing of Alan Parker, who was involved earlier with Hungry Wolf. From 1968 and 1971 respectively, this is fuzzed out guitar and screaming organ! CD $10 SKU:14911

HELLMET-Judgement Day !! (legendary 1970 proto metal)Label:SEELIE COURT Thought to be lost forever, Hellmet's legendary 1970 LP is the proto-metal find of the century. Long rumoured to exist amongst hardcore prog collectors, it used to be considered as the missing VO5 Vertigo cata!ogue number. In 1970, two acetates were cut at Oak studios (a 12” and a 7”) and then promptly lost, and those who knew of its rumoured existence decided it was mere myth or permanently lost or destroyed. But in 2021, this doom-laden metal psych masterpiece finally emerges from the Stygian depths of prog legend. Hellmet's sole lp is the ultimate incarnation of Leviathan and the Mike Stuart Span, and on this record, they hit a peak — almost like a raw undergound Led Zep 1 with elements of Cream. Hellmet's sound is characterised by a howling lead guitar tonally similar to High Tide but played in a heavy blues psych style; at times Steve Day appears to be wrestling a demonically possessed lead into submission. Three tracks are classic heavy prog proto-metal, then ‘Trust' gets into 'Dazed and Confused’ territory with its violent tale of resisting torture under the Inquisition; the dark epic 'Judgement Day' closes side one, a tale of heroin addiction and facing one's maker in an inevitable slide towards alienation and death. The LP benefits from repeat playing: it is heavy, but also deep, and has a vibe that combines anger with melancholia. A significant and historic find, if you ache for more true vintage Heavy Prog.
Cover reproduces an orig sketch for the planned 1970 lp CD $19 SKU:24714

HEYOKA- Secret Rarities 1978-86-Label:SHROOMANGEL a new limited edition TEXAS ROCK DYAMONDS series of small press-run CD releases The music you are now listening to represents the best of the remaining previously unreleased Heyoka recordings both live and studio. The original 1979 studio sessions were first presented as rough mixes to various people very close to the band at the time, and one of those people fortunate enough to have received one of the demo cassettes was living in Louisiana and was able to preserve that tape over the years. That cassette is the source for the 1979 studio sessions (released on Spirit of Revelation in their final form) herein, and provides a different perspective on the core songs of Heyoka as far as how they were mixed, the lead guitar takes, etc. The track “Moods” is quite the rarity, only recently re-recorded by the band, this song could be considered the last great prog-rock epic written and performed live but never properly recorded in the studio. This live recording of the track is the only surviving example of it from the active period of the band. The other tracks are gathered from various sources and give you more of a clear picture as to what the band was about both in the studio and live– playing their top caliber originals mixed with select covers, usually cuts by artists such as Pink Floyd, Rush, or Jethro Tull among others. Presented in a digipak with foldout mini poster-insert, limited to only 300 copies, all songs and alternate studio versions, are for the first time released on CD. First one in the Texas Rock Dyamonds Series. File Under: Pomp Rock, Melodic Hard Rock, Progressive Hard Rock. For fans of: Prism, Trillion, 70s Kansas, 70s Styx. (LIMITED TO 300 COPIES - TEXAS ROCK DYAMONDS SERIES) CD $10 SKU:24718

HEYOKA - Spirit of Revelation (legendary Texas 1977)-Label:SHROOMANGEL Tri-fold digipak CD version of this legendary Texas band's music, tracks recorded between the years 1977 and 1986, all previously unissued. "Mention Heyoka to any self respecting rock music head in Texas and they'll tell you about this legendary band, the greatest unsigned band ever to originate from that state. Heyoka captured the imagination of fans with a back story fueled by mystical Native American folklore and peyote dreams. They opened for Rush at Randy's Rodeo, then managed to get plum slots opening for Sammy Hagar, Van Halen, Be-Bop Deluxe, Golden Earring, Budgie, Trapeze and Rick Derringer. The music video for "Video Madness" made it onto MTV—but was then unceremoniously banned. "Heyoka, like Ultra in San Antonio... really should have made it but didn't," concert promoter Jack Orbin says. "I think they were ahead of their time musically. They were progressive metal, and that's what exploded out of San Antonio. They were innovators." The music is reminiscent of Jethro Tull and Kansas, but retaining a unique quality all its own, evoking Native American imagery under the mystical guide of Black Elk. Tracks all from masters, recorded between the years 1977 and 1986, all previously unissued. CD $10 SKU:19959

These boys were going to Catholic High in the late 60's, dropping acid, and listening to the Beatles and the Byrds. The Holy Ghost Reception Committee No.9 were a band of young kids bored with regular Catholic hymns. While secretly listening to The Beatles and The Byrds while their parents were asleep, they came up with the idea of singing religiously inspired music with a modern music rhythm. This idea took off right away amongst other young people in their area, and even was accepted by their pastor, who ended up getting them a deal to record their music. They released two albums, both great garage/psych albums. One of the best examples of what Christian psych can be. IMPI-ST (Rare sole 1971 album by African influenced prog rock band)Label:FRESH Not much information out there about this rare one-off 1971 album (released by CBS back in the day); African influenced progressive rock, by some or all of the members of the South African band the Bats. There are the occasional flashes of pastoral flute/pennywhistle tinged folk mixed with psych guitar, jazz rock brass, soulful vocals and thundering percussion. Comparisons with Vertigo bands Jade Warrior, early Gravy Train and Assegai and bands like Chicago and Greatest Show on Earth. As for the Bats: It all started in 1964 when Eddie Eckstein, Paul Ditchfield, Pete Clifford and the late Barry Jarman, burst onto the local scene and became, to many ardent followers, South Africa's answer to the Beatles. They toured for more than a year (1966) in the UK, sharing the stage with the Kinks, the Troggs, the Zombies, etc. They had a string of successful singles and LPs on CBS, before going through the temporary identity crisis that resulted in the Impi album CD $14 SKU:20404

INSAINTS - Sins Of Saints- S.F.80s street PUNK! LESS than 10 copies left!Label:DISASTER Records There was a time when punk was dangerous, and this album is a reminder of this lost era. This is a 20 track anthology of hardcore/street-punk rock from the late '80s, early 90's, by this legendary San Francisco band. Led by now-deceased fetish model/dominatrix MARIAN ANDERSON on vocals, and with DANIEL DELEON (CALAVERA, the DEEP EYNDE) on guitar, the INSAINTS pushed the punk rock envelope further than any other artist before or since. MARIAN sexual stage antics has become the stuff of legends, but the INSAINTS were also a great band, and this album proves it. “This twenty track anthology, varying between hardcore and pop punk, consists of the band's '93 studio sessions, their double seven inch split with the Diesel Queens, demos and some live material from '90 and '92. The Insaints were one of the Bay Area's most infamous punk bands of the last ten to fifteen years and offered a raw soundtrack to the sad, desperate, and often violent realities of inner-city life and childhood abuse, which became codified as redemption when "play acted" onstage by lead singer Marian Anderson during their live shows. Not for the easily offended. You've been warned. Rest in peace, sweetheart. - Dave Negative / Amoeba review CD $10 SKU:25084

INSTANT FLIGHT- ENDLESS JOURNEY (psych pop rock)-Label:HEADSPIN 2nd and follow up album to their highly acclaimed debut 'Colours & Lights' from 2005. INSTANT FLIGHT is a London based 4 piece psychedelic pop/rock band, who have also worked closely with 'the god of hell fire' Arthur Brown, forming his backing band - they play on the Dvd "Arthur Brown Live at the London Astoria". This second album features 12 glorious psychedelic pop/rock tunes that stick to the mind like bees on honey. All tracks breathe the UK 1968 freakbeat atmosphere, though melodic & timeless, songs loaded with nice lead guitars/slide guitars, mellotron, organs, even the 60's r&b harmonica is present occasionally, as well as flute, trombone, trumpet & bouzouki. Some songs feature typical St. Pepper's type arrangements and shine like "Lucy In The Sky with Diamonds", colourful and surrealistic, while others float on a middle eastern carpet, taking you on a journey beyond the land of dreams. The CD comes with a nice colourful 12 page booklet including all lyrics and is illustrated with surrealistic paintings by Marco Magnani, singer/guitarist/songwriter of the band. An 'Endless Journey' to 'Dreamland' in a 'Universe In A Verse' going 'Back To The Light' where 'The Best Part' of 'The Land Is The Same' with a 'Vanishing' 'Magic Stream' of 'Gentle Waves Of Sound' were we 'Celebrate' and 'Play For A fool' so we can 'Get Away' and fly forever more... INVADERS - There’s A Light , There’s A Way (70s African fuzz ) - Label:FRESH South African rock classic from 1971, filled with fuzz psych guitars, funky organ riffs, and great vocals: it sounds like these guys had been listening to Rare Earth, and judging by the guitar solos, maybe some Jimi Hendrix as well!. Errol Gobey (rhythm guitar, vocals) recalls: “It was a lot of hard work and we had very little sleep. In October 1966, we decided to visit Cape Town. The audience loved us, they went crazy, they wouldn’t let us off the stage! Our name spread quickly throughout the Cape. Somehow Trutone Records, which had a branch in the Cape, got to hear about us. One day we were travelling on the N2 in our panel van. We had ‘The Invaders’ painted in huge letters on the side. A white car pulled alongside us and asked us to pull over. We thought we were in trouble and were going to get a fine of some sort. A white guy approached us and asked us if we were interested in a recording contract. We immediately answered, ‘Yes!’” In 1969, the Invaders decided to try to break into the overseas market. They toured in Europe for two months (Germany, Holland, and England); but they had endless hassles and red tape trying to get work permits. The constant hurdles made them decide to go home. In April 1971, shortly after this album was released, The Invaders disbanded “for religious reasons,” (according to Gobey). The CD version has two bonus tracks—covers of ‘Born on the Bayou’ and (strangely) the Creation’s ‘Painter Man.’ CD $14 SKU:12043

JARDINE- Look in the Window( lost jewel of late-1960's UK psych)Label:LION Jardine’s album was recorded in three glorious weeks in June 1969, at Sounds Aquarian Studios, a stone’s throw from that justifiably famous fashion hub, Carnaby Street. The sessions were fun. Polydor was supposed to release the album. Musicians dropped in to say "hello" and ended up on the record (uncredited)—among them Peter Frampton, Andrew "Andy" Bown (Herd and Status Quo), and Brian Appleyard (drummer from East of Eden). Singer Mickey Cox had been in Robert Plant’s pre-Led Zeppelin group The Band of Joy—it was Cox, in fact, who became their singer when Plant left the band. But suddenly, thanks to band management problems, the LP was shelved. Keith Law, who had written all of the songs, joined Velvett Fogg for their only album, and Jardine was forgotten. Now, forty years later, you can be among the first to discover the brooding excellence of these tracks, music both strange and sinister, with moments of fragile beauty. There are some very pretty songs here (haunting melodies abound), but there is no escaping the dark side of life (‘Masochists of Strangulation,’ ‘Execution of the Child,’ and monumental dirge ‘Blackbirds of Jardine’, which tells of self-same birds, and the fact that they will “destroy you, and leave you pain, pain, pain”), songs perhaps more akin to the band Comus than to anything else we have encountered from the psychedelic era. There are also heavy guitar solos, churning organ, flute, and flowing sitar, for good measure. A 16-page booklet includes a band history lyrics, and comments on the songs by Keith Law. A lost jewel of late-1960's UK psychedelia, from a short-lived but charismatic band! CD $10 SKU:10134

JEREMY DORMOUSE - The Toad Recordings (Legendary Canadian hippie psych rarity from 1967-68 w liners & original cover art) -Label:VOID/HALLUCINATIONS (USA) Legendary Canadian psych rarity from 1967-68 — one of the hardest to find collectable albums there is. Dormouse (aka Cris Cuddy) had previously been with a late sixties folk outfit, The Rejects, who also put out an ultra-rare privately-pressed album. He is supported by a range of backing musicians on this incredibly rare privately-pressed album, which was housed in a beautiful silk-screen sleeve. There are interesting interpretations of Dylan's 'Baby Blue' and Bo Diddley's 'Who Do You Love', but the highlights of this superb album are the vocals of Reign Ghosts' Linda Squires on 'High Flying Bird' and Leonard Cohen's ‘Suzanne.’ "While playing with Gullison, vocalist Lynda Squires and bassists David McKay and Nick Corneal, the concept of the Jeremy Dormouse LP arose and led to the living room sessions with Mike Clancy from another rare band, Hyde, engineering while the Waddington/Cragg/Tapscott songs were recorded at the university language lab by Peter Northrop." MINERS OF MUZO-REALLY.. IS THAT A FACT? (DUTCH 60s inspired garage psych)--Label:DOWN AT THE NIGHTCLUB The official release of 'Really.... Is That A Fact?' on Down At The Nightclub Records. A few copies of this CD were previously released in 2013 by the band as a promo CD. The CD features Lee (vocals and guitars), GJ (drums), Marc (bass), Wannes (guitars), Corn Biekens (lead guitar on #4) and The Salsa Kid (Trumpets on #4, #9 and #12). The CD contains an eight page lyrics booklet. On offer are 13 sparkling guitar songs, sometimes stomping fierce, fuzzing and rocking the garage way, sometimes melodic, or even melancholic, but always with conviction and persuasion and depth. You can hear the influences from the past, you can hear some '60s twang or some '70s hook, but it is definitely a contemporary sound. The Miners are diggin' deep once more. The title refers to an old J.R. Ewing (Dallas) quote. CD $14 SKU:19410

ORANGE DROP -STONED IN LOVE (Dreamy psych acid laced sounds) SAALE! Label:MEGA DODO Hailing from Philadelphia, The Orange Drop blends dreamy psychedelia with some darker, acid-laced sounds of the '60s. Brian Jonestown Massacre fans (particularly of the early records) should appreciate The Orange Drop's approach that is both lo-fi and polished. If this is garage rock, it was made in a garage that conceals an amateur LSD lab. Orange Drop re-invents '60s psychedelia with a 21st century twist of experimentalism! CD $14 SKU:20992

PINK FAIRIES -The Polydor YEARS- 3 CD SET (1967 underground supergroup)-Label:FLOATING WORLD Three CD set packed with bonus tracks, beautifully re-mastered! Pink Fairies grew out of The Deviants, a loose-knit band formed in 1967 by members of the West London hippie commune in Ladbroke Grove. Consisting primarily of vocalist Mick Farren, guitarist Paul Rudolph, bassist Duncan Sanderson, and drummer Russell Hunter, the group also featured satellite members Marc Bolan, Steve Peregrine Took, and players from the band Group X, later rechristened Hawkwind. After a disastrous US tour, Farren was fired and the remaining Deviants returned to London, where they recruited vocalist and former Pretty Things drummer Twink (born John Alder), who suggested the name Pink Fairies. Despite gaining a reputation for mythic debauchery, the group remained largely an underground sensation before signing to Polydor and releasing the three albums featured on this 3xCD set. The first two albums were recorded by the original line-up but Rudolph was replaced by Larry Wallis for the third (Kings Of Oblivion). Their first album (Never, Never Land) is the strongest of the three albums with solid 'heavy' guitar from Paul Rudolph and some furious drumming from Twink. The four bonus tracks include alternate edits of three great tracks plus the early single 'The Snake'. CD $20 SKU:22509

PROTOTIPES - WE ARE BACK (90s Spanish power pop) SAALE! -Label:NO TOMORROW LAST COPIES.The album debut by a band formed by ex-members of Spanish punk rock legends of the '90s SHOCK TREATMENT and DEPRESSING CLAIM. A must for fans of the Spanish punk pop sound of the '90s and for anyone interested in classy punk rock. CD $8 SKU:19898

ROTOMAGUS - The Sky Turns Red: Complete Anthology(1971 protopunk) Label:LION On Julian Cope’s excellent Head Heritage web-site, the Seth Man raves about Rotomagus thus: “The first time I heard this track (‘Fighting C*ck’), I did not freak out. I merely walked into a nearby closet and screamed my head off for a minute solid, beat the floor and ripped my t-shirt... then I cowered when it hit me: this thing came out in 1971? Before “Raw Power”?! I just lost my mind... The only thing that predates this monster in terms of being a full-on amassing of all things heavy are all the many key points on Sir Lord Baltimore’s “Kingdom Come” LP and THAT’S it, brother. Hard to believe this is all pre-1971, as much of the demo is not just proto punk but proto hardc*re—with enough fiery attitude to make you want to scream along. The vocals are wild, while the guitar riffs and grinds and approaches a Stooges via Motorhead apocalyptic grandeur. Amazing! CD $10 SKU:14512

ST. THOMAS PEPPER SMELTER - Soul & Pepper mini slv replica (Peruvian 60s psych freakbeat )- Label:LION PRODUCTIONS (USA) & REPSYCHLED RECORDS (Peru) The first official reissue of this much-bootlegged classic South American psychedelic freakbeat album, recorded in 1969 by Peruvian band The (St. Thomas) Pepper Smelter. Perhaps the story of the band is not well known, but their achievements were great—and international: editions of their sole LP were produced in Peru, Mexico, Brazil and Ecuador, and 45rpm singles were published in Mexico and Greece. St. Thomas Pepper Smelter was formed by Gerardo Manuel Rojas on vocals and tambourine, Beto Tataje on rhythm guitar and lead guitar, Juan Carlos Barreda on bass and vocals, Carlos Manuel Barreda on drums and backing vocals (all from the famous group Los Shains), and Freddy Macedo on keyboards. Their first single was a cover of ‘Purple Haze’ b/w one of their own compositions, ‘A New Summer.’ The band then began to record their only LP. That album contains twelve tracks—six written by the band, and the other half cover versions. The band's music could be described as freak beat; in many ways, it is a preview of the garage /surf style of Los Shain's, heading towards the heavy psychedelic rock of Gerardo Manuel & El Humo. At the time, St. Thomas Pepper Smelter simply called it “underground music.” Gerardo’s voice is soft in the band’s own songs, and aggressive on the cover tunes; his guitar style oozes fuzz. The foundation of bass and drums by the brothers Barreda is very powerful and strong; and the songs benefit from the layers of keyboard played by Freddy Macedo. This fully licensed, hand-numbered, limited edition CD release comes in a mini-LP sleeve replica of the original album art; it also comes with a replica of an original poster; a replica of an original color photo of the band. More importantly, it includes three previously unreleased bonus tracks exclusive to this edition. Carefully remastered from the original master tapes and released in this limited edition of 400 copies, available exclusively worldwide from Lion Productions. CD $10 SKU:14479

SUCK - Time to Suck ( 1970 South African hard rock ) Label:FRESH The loudest, most controversial and obnoxious revolutionary fist-in-your-face rock album not to come out of Detroit! An album (Parlophone, 1970) that is all howling feedback guitars, explosive drumming, and muscular vocal antics‹and why not, as the album includes cover versions of songs by Black Sabbath, Grand Funk, plus a slow-burn 'Season of the Witch' that would spook Donovan, and the most schizoid '21st Century Schizoid Man' imaginable; the band rampaged through conservative South Africa for almost one year, then split; original album plus an EMI compilation track as a bonus; liner notes and photos tell the whole story of Suck. A FINE DAY AND A BRILLIANT EVENING -Cherry Red Rarities 1983-85 (willowy pop)Label:CHERRY RED More willowy pop of yesteryear from the vaults of Cherry Red. The second release in the Cherry Red Rarities series, is a collection of rare and upstanding tracks from three of Cherry Red’s most popular artists: Jane And Barton, Grab Grab The HaddocUk (yes, they really did exist) and In Embrace. “The juxtaposition of the three artists here seems coincidental, yet they successfully present different facets of the sound of the label during the early 80's. Jane & Barton start with the acapella 'It's A Fine Day' which was later turned into the Opus III dancefloor smash. Flute and percussion accompany Jane on 'I Want To Be With You' to nice pastoral effects a la Virginia Astley, although the latter would have never named one of her songs 'Ha Bloody Ha', which poses such thought-provoking questions as "Did you hear about the woman who died" or "What part of a vegetable can't you eat". Simple voice and piano arrangement on 'There Is A Man' and 'You Are Over There' makes ideal lazy afternoon listening, only to be rudely disturbed by Mr.Barton's grating screech on 'You Are Over There Part Two'. Onto the marvelously named Grab Grab The Haddock, which included two of the three Marine Girls after Tracey Thorn went on to form Everything But The Girl. They pretty much carried on with the style of their previous band, only now augmented to a four-piece. Lightweight summery guitar pop, the stuff that made Cherry Red famous. In Embrace played moody melodic pop with guitar and synths. Although once described as 'introverted and emotionally unfathomable' the songs are actually quite classy and the sentiments deeply felt. 'The Darkest Horse' features a spine-tingling chord progression slightly reminiscent of the Cocteaus. They should have been big. The CD ends with a bonus video of 'It's A Fine Day'. ASTRAL DAZE - VA 4 (tracks from the heydays of South African psych)Label:FRESH MORE SNAPSHOTS OF THE SOUTH AFRICAN ROCK UNDERGROUND' - The fourth part of this compilation series features 19 classic, rare and obscure tracks from the heydays of South African psychedelic rock. COMP CD $15 SKU:19283

ASTRAL DAZE - VA VOL 1 (70 s Psychedelic South African Rock) - Label:FRESH This collection brings together rarities from artists we know (tracks from Abstract Truth, Suck, Otis Waygood, Freedom’s Children, John & Philipa Cooper, McCully Workshop, Third Eye, and Hawk), as well as others we’ve not heard before, like Omega Ltd., the Bats, the Fireflies, the Idiots, Tidal Wave, and the Invaders. Although the South African rock movement of the late sixties and early seventies was not a major commercial success, it's participants heralded an exciting new age in South African rock and started a movement aimed at changing the musical tastes of fans in a spectacular way. Stadium concerts became the vehicle for feeding the youth with heavier rock sounds, and behind studio glass were producers like Clive Calder, Billy Forrest, Graham Beggs and Selwyn Miller who acted as change agents to transform conventional pop into heavier 4 to 5 minute songs. The movement's struggle for recognition through airplay remained unanswered and only the true fans of rock knew about their existence. COMP CD $15 SKU:25183

BEYOND THE CALICO WALL - VA ( 60s psych ) LAST COPIES, less than 10 left Label:VOXX Will not be repressed! The good people who put together this compilation set out to accomplish no less daunting a task than collecting the most bizarre and extreme underground psychedelic music recorded in the 1960's, and, for the most part, the choices seem to be right on the money. The collection starts off with "The Trip" by Park Avenue Playground, a song that bursts out of the gate with an explosion of fuzz guitar, organ, and mad siren-like oscillating effects, coming at you from all directions, seemingly. Next up is "Suzie's gone" by Afterglow, definitely one of the weirdest singles ever. The singer moans "so...my...world...is...messed...up!" in the most detached voice possible over a staccato organ and drum part, leading to a guitar solo that soon collapses into no recognizable conventional song structure. No less amazing is "Mt. Olympus" by The Flower Power, which starts off as an innocuous and somewhat introspective sounding piece until a wild heavily chorused guitar break, which only slightly warns you of the totally anarchic feedback and free-form noise ending -- which goes on for over a minute in a 3:40 single! Then you get a bizarre sci-fi/horror tale in "The pulse" by Burritt Bradley, and an incredible reading of The Electric Prunes' "I had too much to dream last night" by Rasputin and the Mad Monks, with weird proto-techno sound effects, backwards vocals, and production effects making the backing track fade in and out, creating a disturbing sensory assault. Other highlights include "An experiment in terror" by The Greek Fountains, which is a strange polyrhythmic instrumental, and "Up in my mind" by The Spontaneous Generation, which surely has to rank as one of the most aggressive 60's psych records ever made, with waves of vibrato guitar and insistent wah wah riffing. Also worthwhile is "The electronic insides and metal complexion that make up Herr Dr. Krieg," by The Riders of the Mark, which musically isn't quite as strange as its title, but comes close! The weirdness factor decreases somewhat as the c.d. progresses, and a sloppy but straightforward cover of "In a gadda da vida" by Six Feet Under makes for a pretty uninteresting closer, but the good material here makes this an essential purchase. Buy it if you like psychedelia, experimental or Incredibly Strange Music. Robert Schell (Townsville, Texas) COMP CD $15 SKU:22106

COME BACK BIRD- ABILINE Texas Teen Scene 1965-67-Label:CICADELIC RECORDS There were vigorous garage band scenes all over the U.S. in the mid-'60s as young musicians, inspired by the British Invasion sounds of the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, the Yardbirds, the Who, and the Kinks, picked up electric guitars and had at it, usually resulting in music that was more about attitude and approximation than it was about originality or skill. Abilene, TX had such a scene, and this fun set collects four of the region’s most popular garage outfits, the Chevelle V, the Livin' End, the Continentals, and the Coachmen. Of course, being Texas, there was also a lot of Buddy Holly bubbling under these bands’ singles, too. Highlights here include the Chevelle V’s 'Come Back Bird' (there are three versions of it collected here, of which the original single version is the best) and their version of the surf classic 'Koko Joe'; the Livin' End's sizzling takes on ‘Roadrunner,' 'All Alone' (essentially 'I’m a Man' with different lyrics), 'My Destination' (a fuzzed out near-cousin to the Beatles' 'Day Tripper'), and the Who-like 'Makin’ Time'; and the Coachmen's reverb-soaked 'Hush Broken Heart'. Nothing here is much different than the garage sounds happening elsewhere in the country at the time, and nothing here rewrote the history of pop and rock, but it’s fun all the same.” —AllMusic review by Steve Leggett COMP CD $10 SKU:24534

CONGREGATION FOR ANTI FLIRTS -The McAllen, Texas Teen Scene 1965-1967 -Label:CICADELIC RECORDS \Subtitled: The McAllen, Texas Teen Scene 1965-1967. "From 1965 to 1967, McAllen was the happening scene for some of the wildest music to emanate from Texas in the '60s. The label that played host to these bands was Jimmy Nichol's Pharaoh Records and this album contains the best the label had to offer. Not only were the records superlative, but today they are considered some of the rarest finds for collectors of '60s garage bands. Singles by Pharaoh artists such as The Headstones, The Cavaliers, and Christopher and The Souls go for over a grand apiece, if they can be located. ELECTRIC HOLYLAND -ST- (Jesus fuzz psych 1960s)Label:LION Only 300x copies made! Music known as “Jesus rock” or "Jesus psych,” the synthesis of the Christian philosophy combined with heavy rock or psychedelic music, first saw light of day in the late 1960’s and was immediately pressed on vinyl. It didn’t dent popular consciousness and was met with almost zero popularity in its infancy. Over the years, astute collectors and music lovers began to realize that some of these records, almost all of which had been privately pressed in very small quantities with little to no promotion, contained some of the heaviest, catchiest, guitar-driven psych rock ever released. Many of us feel that these early greatly talented, creative and innovative Jesus rock artists, which, sadly, have been mostly overlooked and remain stlll relatively unknown, deserve to be heard. They broke the traditional mold of what Christian music should sound like and need to be known and recognized along with the well-known rock artists and bands of the era. This album presents twelve cuts of some of the best and sometimes heaviest obscure Jesus psych rock ever. Several tracks are from ultra-rare albums that are well-known to vinyl collectors, while others are from albums so obscure that only a few copies are known to exist. Enjoy your fuzz-drenched trip through “Electric Holyland”! COMP CD $10 SKU:24738

SLOWLY FROM THE SOUTH - VA DBL CD (proggy gems and post psych rock from South Africa 70s and 80s) DBL CD Label:FRESH A two disc compilation of South African rock from 1970-2008, including many artists previously unavailable on CD. “In the early 70’s South Africa was in it’s third decade of self inflicted political and cultural isolation. Despite a concerted effort by the then Nationalist government to ‘protect the youth’ by blocking the flow of progressive cultural ideas via a series of bannings, restrictions and high import tariffs, rock music per se, and all it represented, managed to reach these Southern shores and inseminate a flowering home grown rock revolution. Although some groups simply emulated the sounds of their international counterparts, other South African bands embraced their African roots, drawing on home grown melodic and rhythmic structures, meshing them with European influences and producing a heady variant of progressive music that fits snugly alongside their international compatriots. “Slowly From the South” showcases the cream of South African prog rock of the last 40 years. Tucked inside you will hear the music of some of South Africa’s heavyweight musical sons & daughters—some familiar and others only recognised in name but never heard outside these southern shores, until now. It is the culmination of close to two years of research and planning, tracking down long lost masters, photos and information. This double disc compilation is unique. It is the first indigenous compilation that showcases the South African musicians who explored both jazz and prog rock genres during the seventies and beyond. This official release is artist and label approved, and includes rare artist photos and information.

FOX- For Fox Sake (1970 UK PSYCH ZOMBIES STYLE)- Label:SOMMER Originally released in 1970 but sounding more akin to ‘67-68, “For Fox Sake” is a superb example of UK psych, highly recommended if you’re into APPLE, KOOBAS, ZOMBIES, OCTOPUS, SKIP BIFFERTY, SPENCER DAVIS GROUP, RUBBLES. First ever vinyl reissue with original UK artwork. Remastered sound and insert with photos / memorabilia plus liner notes by band member Steve Brayne. During their brief existence they supported The Herd and opened for David Bowie. NEKTAR -A Tab in the Ocean (1972 Brit acid psych prog) DOUBLE Lp Label:MISSING VINYL Did you ever wonder what would happen if a giant tab of acid was dropped into the sea? According to Roye Albrighton, Nektar’s guitarist and vocalist, they did. Albrighton and his mates parlayed their curiosity into the group’s acclaimed second album, appropriately titled “A Tab in the Ocean.” built on the sound of Nektar’s first album, Journey to the Centre of the Eye, but further emphasized a “concept” over its five tracks (the lengthiest being album opener ‘A Tab in the Ocean’) which took the band musically in a tighter, more structured and focused direction. “Official, deluxe 180 gram double LP reissue of the second album (dating from 1972) by the legendary British psychedelic progressive group, that was based in Germany. The extra LP contains 4 excellent psychedelic bonus tracks from 1972-1973, which have remained unreleased on vinyl until now. Expertly remastered from the original master tapes. Alford left the group in 1971 and was replaced by drummer Marty Naul, while the next year the trio was joined by guitarist Richard Heath. The band had also a three-man horn section, which was dropped quite fast, although horns remained a part of the band's sound, even on their rare and epochal 1975 private press debut ''Ruff Mix,” released on the band’s own Ozone label.“Ruff Mix” mainly grooves in Hard Rock territory—the second track 'Peanut Butter Yoni' sounds a bit like Judas Priest with a proto-Metal feeling; but the album also has elements of Progressive Rock, Horn Rock and Pomp Rock. Like most bands of the era, the idea was to throw out a few different styles to see if something would stick… the theory being that a major label would hear the private album by chance and sign said band so they could open for Led Zeppelin or Foghat's next US tour… or something like that. What separates Oz Knozz from others is a strong compositional component, the band have plenty of original ideas and muster superb instrumentation. The guitar work ranges from hard and powerful to melodic and bluesy and is supported by some great keyboard, including awe-inspiring organ and synth waves. The three-part 15-minute 'Doodley Squat’ suite features heavy dual keyboard parts, crunchy guitars and expressive vocals; the result is a terrific Hard Prog track with lot of energy. For many, the standout track is the groovy and infectious horn rocker, which sounds as dated as the movement itself and easily could have been from 1969. High energy and impressive songwriting LP $22 SKU:21411
