VICIOUS VISIONS - RETRODISRESPECT 1980-83 (holy grail in punk rock collector circles,)Label:BUSY BEE Vicious Visions' single 'I Beat You' is a holy grail in punkrock collector circles, not just because of its limited run of only 109 copies but also because it is a MONSTER of a hit. Formed in Halmstad, Vicious Visions soon moved to Berlin and honed their craft in squats in the shadow of the iron wall. They may come from the same little town as Roxette but they sound more Berlin than Halmstad. Where the single was musically defined by the fact that the band at that time didn't have a drummer so they were forced to use a drum machine. 'Retrodisrespective' can broaden the perception of
Vicious Visions as it includes both full band recordings as well as ones by the original core duo behind 'I Beat You'. You'll get to enjoy everything from chaotic punk anthems to minimal Suicide-like no wave. CD $17 SKU:24349

OUR LIVES ARE SHAPED BY WHAT WE LOVE - Motown's Mowest Story 1971-73-LAST COPIES! Label:LITA First ever Mowest anthology.Lovingly re-mastered from the original tapes. Extensive liner notes and photos. You know the old saying, “Go west, young man”? Well, it’s far from cliché. Over the years, some have hit the road in search of Hollywood’s glitz and glamour, others, simply for warmer climes, but in the early 1970’s, Detroit-native and Motown founder Berry Gordy Jr. brought his musical family to the left coast, one piece at a time. He began by launching the Mowest subsidiary in 1971, a new L.A.-based label dedicated to coastal grooves and an eye towards the top of the charts. COMP CD $10 SKU:24193

PLASTIC CRIMEWAVE SYNDICATE -Massacre of the Celestials (deep psych) SAALE! Label:GALACTIVE ARCHIVE (USA) ‘Massacre Of The Celestials’ is presented in a 350 gram Gloss Laminated Sleeve and comes with a download code. 300 Pressing Worldwide. Steven Krakow (aka Plastic Crimewave) is a dark sonic visionary whose every output is infused of the deepest psychedelic music (or just plain old music) out there. With Plastic Crimewave Syndicate you are treated to a howling, menacing, throbbing freak-out sthat is never for the faint hearted. Aided by skronkin' sax goddess Taralie Peterson (aka Louise Bock/Tar Pet) of avant musical coven Spires that in the Sunset Rise, Plastic Crimewave Syndicate go into uncharted realms on their 4th new epic album, "Massacre of the Celestials." Recorded over the course of a tu- multuous year on this small planet, a concept emerged of a story we all know and love-- the rise and fall of humanity, and then the post-apocalyptic rebirth of a new furtherly- dystopian mutated world. PCWSyndicate didn't discriminate with the freaky sonic tools needed to craft this molten behemoth of a LP, utilizing: damaged waves of No Waves, free-festival rave-ups that punters will knock down fences to pogo to, monochord Doom ruminations...and could that be groovy post-post-punkin' Funakdelica? These cosmic cats also go to the roots of all: The Blooz--elemental, drugged, n grungey--and like JAZZ, MAN! (free, not expensive, for thee people). Plastic Crimewave (bellows/guiterror), Kosmik Jru (bass rumble), and Jose "The Beast" Bernal (kit smash), keep the freaks a-rollin and a- tumblin on an LP destined to score the end of this feeble Earthen sphere. LP $18 SKU:24302

PTARMIGAN - ST ( 1972 hypnotic stoner style w inserts and photos) Label:LION 2018 ltd ed of 300 copies Hypnotic, mystical, largely instrumental tracks, all based on a complex interplay of recorder, hand drums and acoustic guitar—one of those hidden gems that make life better when you discover them all these years later. Ptarmigan recorded the basic tracks for what would eventually become their only album in 1972. It then took the band’s producer and manager, renowned flautist Paul Horn, more than a year to find a label willing to release such unusual music. Finally, in 1974, Columbia Records released Ptarmigan’s album to critical acclaim, and minimal sales. The music of Ptarmigan is deep and authentic and intimate; it's reflective sounds are well suited to meditating on a landscape, an emotion, a bottle of wine, or maybe while staring at a flickering candle. Sometimes it is free-flowing and jazz-oriented; at other times it has the mystical feel of a shamanistic ceremony, fueled by Eastern-tinged harmonies. But in the end, this album is about the sea: Ptarmigan was, after all, from Vancouver Island, and the musicians were well-versed in the contradictory moods of the surrounding ocean. Rated by many as the best "folk/progressive" and/or "folk/psych" album ever made. As one contemporary review said, this is "music from musicians, for musicians, late-at-night, last joint music." Our Lion Productions reissue comes with a massive fold-out insert which includes lyrics, liner notes from the band, and a multitude of photos and historical mementos.•Rated by many as the best "folk/progressive" and/or "folk/psych" album ever made•From the master tapes •Limited second press of 300x copies •Huge insert comes with lyrics, liner notes from the band, and more LP $18 SKU:16108

RIDDLES-I TELL YOU A STORY OF MY LIFE(1966 Greek 60s garage) BLACK VINYL Label:B-OTHERSIDE Finally, a previously unreleased collection of material from Greek '60s beat/garage band Riddles sees the light of day! In 1966 Riddles became a popular live attraction in the band's hometown of Piraeus by delivering top notch Beatles-covers and other Brit invasion songs with a healthy garage edge. After winning a local Battle Of The Bands contest the combo entered a studio to record four songs. Two of those songs, the originals 'Alone Alone' and 'I Tell You A Story About My Life' made it to an official 45rpm release in 1966. These killer tracks are of course included in this album. ROLAND, PAUL-Bates Motel (Cramps/ 60s psych punk style)LTD ED 180 gram Label:69 WATT-WATT2 Cult English baroque rocker Paul Roland (who was once described as 'the male Kate Bush' by label mate Robyn Hitchcock) has left the mock gothic grandeur of his past albums such as 'Danse Macabre', the Edwardian proto-steampunk offerings of 'A Cabinet of Curiosities' and the dark woods of folk-themed 'Grimm' to plug his electric guitar in and thrash to death such titles as 'I Was A Teenage Zombie', 'Tortured By The Daughter of Fu Manchu', 'How I Escaped From Devil's Island' and the title track ‘Bates Motel’. Someone has evidently been listening to The Cramps and Johnny Cash! For those who might find the pace rather bracing, there are also a couple of spaced-out psych tracks (including a paean to the dark Indian goddess Kali) and a creepy tale or two with a suitably atmospheric setting - one inspired by a ghost story written by England's master of the macabre M.R. James ('The Wailing Well'). The lighter side of Roland's macabre humour is embodied in a couple of classic Sixties psych-punk tracks with a twist (‘Tortured By The Daughter of Fu Manchu’ and 'Crazy'), plus a sly pastiche of self-righteous evangelical preachers on the gospel tinged 'Promised Land' and a typical Roland offbeat Arabian adventure ‘Khatmandu’. •New remixed sound + alternative cover artwork to the Sireena 2013 CD edition. •Limited to 200 black vinyl copies. Factory sealed album. 180gr vinyl as usual.
oland: "In the late 1980s I interviewed several members of the Velvet Underground for a national English newspaper and at the end of the interviews I asked Nico, Sterling Morrison and Maureen Tucker if they would be interested in recording with me and they seemed genuinely enthusiastic. So I wrote some songs for them and sent the tapes over to the States, but there were technical problems that couldn't be resolved… so the songs were shelved, until now. I had spoken to Sterling several times on the phone and he had written back saying that he was keen to record and he liked the songs, particularly the structures, I remember, but I didn't pursue it, thinking that we had all the time in the world to get together. Then sadly he died and soon after so did Nico. Then my own music went off in a more psych-folk direction and I forgot all about the PR/VU project. But recently after making a number of intimate acoustic albums I was itching to rock again and I thought it was time to dust off the songs I had written for them and complete those which I hadn't finished. 'Bates Motel' is not Paul Roland imitating the Velvet Underground - that would be pointless - it is the album that I would have made with Mo, Sterling and Nico had I been a bit more aggressively ambitious and made sure the opportunity wasn't lost." LP $21 SKU:24562

SCAMPOLO- UNDER THE RAINBOW (1968 Hungarian rock/and roll rarity ) GATEFOLD SAALE! Label:MOIRAS Limited edition of 330 copies, housed in a nice gatefold sleeve! It's a twist of fate that it took the first rock'n'roll band that reached star status in Hungary 48 years to release their first album. At the beginning of the 1960s the band was the most popular among the few Hungarian rock'n'roll groups, their shows' atmosphere was often quite heated. The band existed until the early '80s except for some short pauses and with a few changes in the lineup. The first Scampolo album represents the period between 1968 and 1970 when they left their rock'n'roll roots behind and played a repertoire that was unique in Hungary. It consisted partly of British and American progressive rock and soul hits, partly of their own compositions. These were collected from studio, rehearsal and concert recordings. LP $19 SKU:24235

LEOPOLD, PERRY - Experiments in Metaphysics (70s hippie artifact)Label:GEAR FAB Experiment in Metaphysics is one of the rarest and most sought-after artifacts of the hippie era. Recorded live during a five-hour session in the basement of a shoe-repair shop in June of 1970, most of the 300 original copies of Experiment in Metaphysics were simply given away in one afternoon, yet, inexplicably, bootleg copies of the album later sprang up half-way around the world. The reason for the album's staying power is apparent: the music is gorgeous, first-rate progressive folk. In fact, Side Two of the original LP's label was given the title "Acid-Folk" (the other side was called "Kommercial"), probably one of the very first uses of that term. Perry Leopold creates a proto-gothic ambience full of dark and brooding imagery that is much less cartoonish than most of what passes as "acid," while maintaining that music's visceral punch. Like much of the youth countercultural scene of the times, Leopold can occasionally give into mystical pretentiousness. Experiment in Metaphysics has moments -- namely the spoken-word monologue in the middle of the mostly stellar opening cut, "The Absurd Paranoid" -- of philosophical meandering. Still, even those moments maintain a period charm. Experiment in Metaphysics is exquisitely intelligent and forward-looking. Leopold's mood is much more pious than most music that came out of the psychedelic era, and, indeed, extreme piety tends to be a product of youth, yet there is something aged and wise about Leopold's music. The "Kommercial" side, cryptically subtitled "SMOKE," is conceptually bleak, and after "The Absurd Paranoid," it takes on a much more palpable quality, grounded in experience ("Cold in Philadelphia" and the gorgeous "The 35th of May"). The "Acid-Folk" side (subtitled "DROP") opens with the stark, multi-part title track. Each of the three songs in this section is a virtual mini-suite, with the closing cut, "The U.S.S. Commercial," standing as the album's magnum opus. Experiment in Metaphysics shows some truly progressive and experimental songwriting, even for the time period. Each song, even the instrumental cuts, feels like a story, with beginnings and endings and all kinds of interesting ideas and storylines sandwiched in between. The album is a relic that has not lost one iota of its power. ~ Stanton Swihart CD $10 SKU:22317

7SHADES-BURSTING(prog/punk/pop/psych )SAALELabel:SNAFU RECORDINGS The much anticipated second album from prog/punk/pop/psych pranksters 7shades. Crammed to the gills with all manner of melodic, harmonic and rhythmic deviance, this is a band that is clearly not afraid to venture into the lesser-travelled realms of maximalism. Self-professed devotees of the work of Tim Smith and Cardiacs, that inherited DNA is still in strong evidence throughout 'Bursting', but as a whole the album seems to be striking out in a myriad of other directions. Influences from Gong, King Crimson and Mike Patton are evident, for example, but it is far from being any kind of mere prog copycat affair CD $10 SKU:22630

ABSTRACTS - Hey Let’s Go Now (60s Brit invasion style) Label:BREAKAWAY The Abstracts from Long Island, N.Y. are best known for their classic song 'Always Always'. As one of the first US bands to create an American answer to the British Invasion, their songs were already written and a master plan already in the works when the Beatles started their meteoric rise in the US. But like many of the first wave UK beat bands, The Abstracts were together only for a little more than two years and split when rock and roll moved into a direction that wasn't theirs. Though during this short period, with their storming and ingenuous beat, they recruited a huge following and accomplished a great deal. They were one of the first bands to utilize a light show and besides their sole 45, their legacy contains a cache of unreleased period recordings, some of them made for Columbia Records in 1964. Finally, over four decades later, this album collects the bands entire studio material alongside two excellent sounding 1966 live tracks. An in-depth insert with a wealth of never-before-seen-photos traces the history of the band that brought "Abstractmania" to the New York area in the sixties CD $12 SKU:24265

ACROSS THE WATER-ST (1975 prog rock rarity)Label:SEELIE COURT 380 copy limited edition first pressings in mini card gatefold sleeves, from Glass Masters (not cdrs)
This totally unknown album from 1975 was recorded in the UK by two close friends. Both of them recorded one side of the album, which originally only existed on two acetate records. ACTION -SHADOWS AND REFLECTIONS(4CD BOX THE COMPLETE RECORDINGS 1964-1968)Label:GRAPEFRUIT THE COMPLETE RECORDINGS 1964-1968' - Sixties mod band The Action only released six singles in their lifetime -or seven, if you count a pre-Action single by The Boys- but their legend has grown exponentially since their demise in 1968. They were the first band signed by Beatles producer George Martin after he left EMI to set up his own company AIR Productions. In due course, he produced the band's five singles issued on Parlophone between 1965 and 1967 as well as tracks intended for a never-released album. 'Shadows And Reflections' is far and away the most comprehensive tribute to The Action so far assembled, boasting all their known recordings in the studio and live on radio/TV. Many of the original Parlophone single mixes have never been reissued in their original form on compact disc - until now. The fresh discovery of multi-tracks and rehearsal tapes has led to a whole disc's worth of previously unheard mixes and performances. The box set includes numerous photos of the band in their heyday, with 16,000 words of sleeve-notes by David Wells and a 36-page booklet within a handsome 4-CD digibook. Includes all previous material issued from the band's BBC sessions and post-Parlophone period, suitably remastered by Alec Palao. CD $75 SKU:24501

AKBAYRAM, EDIP-ST- (70s Turkish fuzz) Label:PHARAWAY SOUNDS Edip Akbayram's a frail guy who spent his childhood unable to walk, but once he grew up he was on Istanbul TV in a whitey-fro and knee length colored robes. Akbayram's voice is big & open, and it took him all across Turkey at the height of Anatolian psychedelia. This 1st album collects precious singles from 1972-74, with dark melodies that descend in loose spirals, seemingly forever. Tunes taken from mystic Sufi poets who played the baglama, but retrofitted with hard plowing electric bass lines, funky drums, fuzz-wah guitars and keyboards. Remastered sound, insert/booklet with photos and liner notes by Angela Sawyer (Weirdo Records). CD $12 SKU:25155

ALLAN DAVIE AND THE ARROWS - Arrow Dynamic Sounds ( Surf/Fuzz ) LAST COPIES -Label:TOTAL ENERGY Starting in the '60s as a surf group, Davie Allan & the Arrows took instrumental
music a step further, hot-wiring their sound with the abuse of fuzz pedal. "Talking about pop culture, baby? Allan was an architect, a natural fact rock & roll artist. Allan's ax rocks, stalks and talks with heat, assurance and (believe it or not) a maturity that transforms the oft-shallow rock-instro into epic-scale slabs of rock & roll expression. Dazzling." - L.A. Weekly CD $10 SKU:25317

ALLEN, GREG - Happiness is the on the Way (NEW YORK DOLLS) Label:KUDOS Greg Allen's Fringe Religion is a Boston-based band that formed in 2013 - but they are hardly beginners when it comes to rock and roll. Singer, guitar player and songwriter Greg Allen was in a band with the late great Jerry Nolan (drummer for the New York Dolls, Johnny Thunders and the Heartbreakers). But Greg Allen is no Johnny Thunders clone. Yes, he's got that guttersnipe, raw guitar tone but he has a unique song writing style that evokes a dystopic world through a cast of twisted characters.
CD $10 SKU:20560

ALLEN, GREG GROUP - Just for You (NEW YORK DOLLS) Label:BONAFIDEROCK Greg Allen was the last guy to play with Jerry Nolan (New York Dolls, Heartbreakers) - and the CD is dedicated to him - but don't expect another Johnny Thunders clone. He's got a unique song writing style that evokes a New York city that doesn't exist anymore through a cast of twisted characters. The music is pure rock and roll and includes performances by Johnny Rao (David Johansen Band/Helen Schneider and the Kick) and other luminaries. Get this while you can. "Greg Allen happens to be quite a musician and he writes good songs...He's good. He's really, really good."- Jerry Nolan, Tee Vee Tunes Records interview, 1991"Greg Allen played with ex-New York Doll Jerry Nolan and his band features some other folks with good bloodlines. They play rock music or, more specifically, "the kind they don’t make anymore..."- Bob Gulla, The Providence Phoenix, 2004 (Jun 18, 2004) CD $10 SKU:19309

ANT TRIP CEREMONY-24 HOUR (1968 psych Hendrix Airplane style)Label:CICADELIC RECORDS With photos and the story of the group as related by its members. The Ant Trip Ceremony album was recorded during two sessions. the first session was in February of 1968 in a rented hall at Oberlin. Steve was there for the first sessions but had left Oberlin by the spring of 1968 and was not present for the second recording session. The album was called "Twenty Four Hours"because that was the feeling behind the sessions. The band felt ready to record their original songs. These were performed live before student audiences. During live shows, the band was wild, but sadly no live tapes exist. Thus the original songs done on the album when performed live were more psychedelic and improvised. The band was known for getting into strange and long jams. Furthermore no song was ever done twice exactly the same. They were, in some ways like the Grateful Dead of the region. When the band played it was a happening, a genuine psychedelic event. Shows went on for hours, with the audience in a wide variety of states of consciousness. The artwork for the album was of its time with psychedelic-mind-zapping art work. It was without a doubt a counterculture statement!! Musically the whole album has a strong west-coast feel and influenced of Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, Quicksilver but also Hendrix are felt troughout the album. A classic psychedelic album. CD $10 SKU:22970

ARONDIES- Introducing (60s teen garage)-Label:GET HIP Here ‘tis: the long-awaited and complete retrospective of one of the finest teenage garage bands to emerge from Steel Country in the 1960s! he Arondies formed in late 1962 in Clairton, Pennsylvania. The young band struck a hit in 1965 with the help of local DJ Terry Lee: the flawless instrumental track “69.” Beautiful vocal ballads like “All My Love” followed, becoming favorites at the many dances they played. An endless cycle of shows, personal appearances, and shrieking girls proceeded. This was (briefly) Pittsburgh’s personal version of Beatlemania. CD $10 SKU:22324

WARLOCKS- ST (Spacemen 3, Elevators style) SALE - Label:BOMP Records Debut EP CD. Amazing band, think Velvets, Spacemen 3, 13h Floor Elevators. “On its six-track debut, this L.A. band seems to exist in a kind of opiated haze, redolent of Spacemen 3, a heavier Velvet Underground, and (I suppose) the Jesus and Mar Chain. Occasionally things get a bit more wired, as on the awesomel rollicking "Cavemak Rock." Bomp supremo Greg Shaw is known to be a big fan of these guys, so they'd get my vote even if they didn't have the class to close their album with a 12-minute, 35 second workout entitled "Jam of the Warlocks." - The Big Takeover CD $5 SKU:22945

WAYGOOD, OTIS BLUES BAND-ST (1969 acid blues from South Africa)Label:FRESH Excellent album from one of South Africa's best kept secrets, this is slow acid blues with amazing fuzz guitars and gentle passages with flute playing to die for. Long extended jams on certain tracks get heavier and heavier. The first nine tracks on this disc are their complete Parlophone label album from 1970, including their classic takes on traditional tunes 'Watch 'n Chain' and 'I Can't Keep From Crying', plus their burning version of 'Fever'—not blues rock as one might think—it's bluesy no doubt, but with flute and saxophone giving a hippie jamming Sweetwater vibe to the proceedings; three bonus tracks are from their jazzier 1971 Parlophone album "Ten Claps and a Scream"; liner notes and photos have complete band history. They came from Rhodesia in 1969 and had people freaking out straight away at their high-octane live shows; by 1971 they were gone—and rock in Africa was never the same again! CD $14 SKU:11153

WAYGOOD, OTIS BLUES BAND-Ten Light Claps And A Scream(1969 acid blues from South Africa)Label:FRESH One of the lost treasures of EMI-Parlophone’s heavy rock catalog, the third and final LP from South Africa’s Otis Waygood has finally been presented on its own, thanks to the folks at Fresh Music. Originally released in 1971, Ten Light Claps and a Scream smacks of the influence of England’s heavy psych movement, particularly the rumble of such bands as Bloodwyn Pig and the Groundhogs. Otis delivered the rock with a little more bite, thanks to the band’s unbridled devotion to the blues and the killer production of South African rock mavens Julian Laxton of the South African prog group Freedom’s Children and Johannesburg-born, UK-based record executive Clive Calder. Laxton made plentiful use of his famous "magic box": a kind of phasing/echo machine he'd built and used on stage with Freedom's Children. Any fan of old, loud, trippy acid rock from the Vietnam era would be wise to check out this onetime collector’s item from one of the era’s great, unsung acts. This version includes all the original songs and a rare 1977 bonus track, plus updated liner notes and some newly discovered photos.

WEIRDOS - Destroy All Music (1977 Los Angeles punk legends) w booklet- Label:BOMP 30th Anniversary Edition - The Weirdos were in many ways the greatest of L.A.'s punk bands. In early 1977 their mighty sound and singular style were the big-bang igniting the L.A. punk rock scene, as they proclaimed "we're not punks, we're weirdos from Hollyweird!". This wasn't just goofy sloganeering, this was a stance intended to distinguish them from the burgeoning punk rock scenes in New York and London. The Weirdos were not only bringing a new sound and writing teen punks anthems, they were also responsible for their graphics (posters, covers, flyers) and designed their own clothes! Their 1977 Bomp single "Destroy All Music" was a nihilistic anthem, and is now regarded as a classic, and by the time they made their mini-LP two years later they had turned into a powerful, polished band, without losing any of their outrageous attitude. "Destroy All Music - 30th Anniversary Edition " compiles the now classic 1977 EP Bomp and the 1979 "Who, What, When, Where, Why?" mini-LP in its entirety and includes previously unreleased early demos. Comes with a 12 page booklet with photos and liner notes. CD $10 SKU:22947

WILDEBEEST- Bushrock 1 (1981 S African prog)Label:FRESH Recorded in 1981, “Bushrock 1” is the sound of a truly African progressive rock band in full flight: thundering African percussion, hard rock guitars, swirling Celtic violin and soaring vocals all combine to form a heady musical brew. The "Bushrock" concept was ex Freedom’s Children drummer Colin Pratley's brainchild. On Wildebeest's live set “Bushrock 1,” the audience is advised to "settle back and relax"— then the music grabs you, throws you around, and does not let up through nine songs and nearly 45 minutes of adventurous rock. Take a sharp guitarist (Boet Faber), a thundering, driving bassist (Piet Botha), add an exuberantly talented drummer (Colin Pratley) and a rocking violin (Dave Tarr), sweeten with some lovely female vocals (Karlien van Niekerk), crank up the volume, and you’ve got the basis of Wildebeest's thundering, stampeding rock album. The songs are primarily driven by beat and rhythm—Piet's bass punctuates and emphasizes as it drives along, the rock steady and creative drumming is ever present, and the violin becomes an essential rock instrument. Then the guitar sears and soars. Masterful rock, with the great Colin Pratley flailing away on the drums. I think of it as Progressive Jungle Music.” The album was recorded live in 1981, and before that makes you pause, remember that the concept of energetic jungle rock music has rarely been better served before or since; the album features two different “covers” of Freedom’s Children tunes from their classic “Astra” album... not a surprise really, as Tarr and Pratley were both former members of that band. SLOWLY FROM THE SOUTH - VA DBL CD (proggy gems and post psych rock from South Africa 70s and 80s) DBL CD Label:FRESH A two disc compilation of South African rock from 1970-2008, including many artists previously unavailable on CD. “In the early 70’s South Africa was in it’s third decade of self inflicted political and cultural isolation. Despite a concerted effort by the then Nationalist government to ‘protect the youth’ by blocking the flow of progressive cultural ideas via a series of bannings, restrictions and high import tariffs, rock music per se, and all it represented, managed to reach these Southern shores and inseminate a flowering home grown rock revolution. Although some groups simply emulated the sounds of their international counterparts, other South African bands embraced their African roots, drawing on home grown melodic and rhythmic structures, meshing them with European influences and producing a heady variant of progressive music that fits snugly alongside their international compatriots. “Slowly From the South” showcases the cream of South African prog rock of the last 40 years. Tucked inside you will hear the music of some of South Africa’s heavyweight musical sons & daughters—some familiar and others only recognised in name but never heard outside these southern shores, until now. It is the culmination of close to two years of research and planning, tracking down long lost masters, photos and information. This double disc compilation is unique. It is the first indigenous compilation that showcases the South African musicians who explored both jazz and prog rock genres during the seventies and beyond. This official release is artist and label approved, and includes rare artist photos and information.

SUMMER TURNS TO AUTUMN - Ember Rock, Vol. 2 (RARE 60S PSYCH& PROG)-Label:FANTASTIC VOYAGE British indie label Ember released a number of rock albums and singles between 1969 and 1972, which today are much sought after by collectors of psychedelic, progressive and folk rock sounds. Many of the best tracks from these are gathered on “Summer Turns To Autumn”. Foremost among the artists compiled here is progressive rock band Blonde On Blonde, represented by tracks from both of their Ember albums. Fantastic Voyage has salvaged two tracks from Blue Beard s album. An early songwriting/production project for Bob Welch, who next surfaced in Fleetwood Mac, the album was only released in Italy, but the single ‘Sly Willy’ was more widely available and is highly prized by collectors of funky rock. Tyrannosaurus Rex-style acoustic hippy duo Knocker Jungle and progressive folk group 9.30 Fly each managed one now highly collectable long player for the label. The remainder of the material ranges from the fuzzy psychedelic rock of Canadians The Dorians and the melodic folk rock of Paddy Maguire, backed by heavy friends Steve Winwood and Jerry Donahue (of Fotheringay), to the soul-rock fusion of Milt Matthews Inc, here interpreting a Blind Faith song, and a previously unissued folk rock rendition of ‘East Virginia’ by Polly Niles. “Summer Turns To Autumn” complement Fantastic Voyage’s existing, highly popular compilations of Ember Beat and Ember Pop, with no duplication of tracks. Nice shrink-wrapped slip-case packaging. COMP CD $10 SKU:19046

TWO TIMING BABY -Ember Sixties Pop: Volume 2, 1961-1962Label:FANTASTIC EMBER In 1960, Jeffrey Kruger launched Ember Records as an independent, one of very few in the UK, where the majors held sway. Straight away, the label set about trying to break into the charts with many fine pop releases. The Ember Sixties Pop series compiles the best of those records. “Two Timing Baby” picks up the story from where Say When: Ember Sixties Pop Volume 1 (FVCD044) left off. Carter, Lewis & The Southerners first Ember single ‘Two Timing Baby’/’Will It Happen To Me’ features Joe Meek engineering, Geoff Goddard on piano, Albert Lee on guitar, Chas Hodges on bass and Bobby Graham on drums. The Meek connection continues with Mark Douglas only single: Joe produced ‘It Matters Not’/’Upside Down’ and Tornado Clem Cattini confirms he drums on both tracks. American songwriters Buddy Kaye and Phil Springer penned many hits, including ‘The Next Time’ for Cliff Richard. They brought several songs to Ember and Grant Tracy was the adaptable vocalist on ‘The Great Matchmaker’/’The Tears Came Rolling Down’ and the follow-up flip ‘Taming Tigers.’ Other beneficiaries of the prolific Kaye and Springer were Johnny Carson (‘Are You Anyone s Girl’/’Teenage Bachelor’ and, again, ‘The Tears Came Rolling Down’) and Sandra Gale (‘Hello Heartache’/’If She s Right For You’) who had been girl singer with the Ray Ellington Quartet, joining Ember when Ellington did. Kruger chose the songs for Lita Roza’s single with the aim of moving her sound towards pop and rock n roll, and she turns in fine performances on ‘Mama (He Treats Your Daughter Mean)’/’(He s My) Dreamboat,’ aided by a driving band led by Tony Crombie. Brooklyn-born Kerry Adams recorded her single in New York, conducted by future soul giant Jerry Ragovoy. The Dale Sisters cute harmonies are evident on their second Ember single, ‘Road To Love’/’Secrets.’ Tommy Sanderson’s second Ember 45 combined trad-jazz ‘Ding Dong Rag’ with groovy ‘Piano A Go Go,’ which would have made a great theme for a TV detective show. Many of these original singles are highly collectable (mint copies of Mark Douglas are valued at £75, Carter, Lewis & The Southerners at £50 and Lita Roza at £30). Subsequent volumes will carry the story through to the end of the sixties, with further sought after tracks included. The series is complemented by compilations devoted to beat and rock from the Ember vaults. Recordings are mastered from tape, where available, and booklets illustrated with sleeve and label shots. Nice shrink-wrapped slip-case packaging. COMP CD $10 SKU:19205

RIALZU -U Rigiru-OFFICIAL VINYL REISSUE OF 1978 PROG/ZEUHL MONSTER-Label:PQR-Disques File under: Magma, Wapassou, Catharsis, Jacula, Current 93, Death in June, Tindersticks, Coph Nia Recorded and originally released in 1978, Rialzu’s first and only album is rightfully considered by savvy collectors as a hidden gem from the versatile French progressive rock scene. Firmly rooted in Magma-esque (“Köhntarkösz" period) dark matter, it deviates from Zeuhl towards a stultifying eeriness that is so bewilderingly fresh — and in a sense makes this a proto goth-rock masterpiece. Spearheaded by a mesmerizing interplay between baritone and soprano vocals, an assemblage of sinister instrumental twists and turns constantly undermines and postpones the possibility of catharsis. In between an ode to spectrality and vainly ruminating invocations, U Rigiru might as well have been composed by a group of Gregorian singers who are fans of Jacula. This is a truly eclectic masterpiece to be cherished by Zeuhl fans, as well as by Goth aficionados and Cold Meat Industry diehard fans. U Rigiru in Corsican is a circular endeavor, a self-referential leap from and into an existential angst-ridden enclave, enshrouded in a celestial abyss. Darkness baked right in to the name of the album. LP $34 SKU:25002

SLAVE-The Lover, the Madman and the Poet (70s downer psych)Label:SEELIE COURT Slow, echo-laden and atmospheric, using a psyched out twangy guitar and Doors- esque vocals intoning strange and twisted tales: a depressed Jim Morrison colliding with Hank Marvin and Lord Byron in a sonic suicide pact of downer psych prog mystery. A few sleeve-less copies of Slaves sole Deroy LP exist, but devoid of information — and thus no one has been able to find out anything about the band. Seelie Court believes it to be connected to 9.30 Fly but they deny involvement, although Barbara Wainwright did concede that "it does sound a bit like us.” The Shadows on a bad acid trip? It’s a love or hate LP that leaves some listeners awe-struck and others deeply confused. LP $32 SKU:24687
