SHORTCROSS - Arising (1972 Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Grand Funk Railroad style)-Label:GEAR FAB AllMusic Review by Stanton Swihart [-]Opening with song titles such as "Nothin' But a Woman," "Wastin' Time," "Suicide Blues," and "Just Don't Care," Short Cross made no secret on their sole 1972 album, Arising of the fact that they aspired to make hard blues-rock like their idols -- Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Grand Funk Railroad -- were creating. Sure enough, the album is a piece of competently played blues-rock. All the bandmembers are quality musicians: the drums fall into a nice groove, the basslines soar and dip, and there is no shortage of good guitar licks CD $10 SKU:18655

Like hippie culture, Tayles faded away near the end of 1972. CD $10 SKU:19456

BARGAINS, LAST COPIES AND RESTOCKS!

FIKRET KIZILOK - ST (Turkish 1970-1974 protest singer)-Label:WORLD PSYCHEDELIA Collection of singles by Turkish protest singer much-beloved by young musicians in the underground scene in Tukey, but virtually unknown anywhere else; Fikret started his career playing electric guitar for Cahit Oben Dörtlüsü, which led to appearances in the Golden Microphone song contests that also spotlighted the talents of Erkin Koray, Mogollar and the brothers Hür El; Booklet has notes about the Altin Microphon contests, lyrics, and photos. CD $8 SKU:20153

UGLY DUCKLINGS - Thump & Twang ( 60s garage psych DEMOS and other archival recordings ) - Label:PACEMAKER Second in the "Lost Jams" series this is compilation of demos and other recordings from the archives of lead singer Dave Bingham. The recordings on Thump & Twang begin with a November 1967 studio session wherein new member Mike McKenna’s original “The Blues Fell This Morning” is cut. Following Glynn Bell’s departure the Ducklings continued recording as a four piece, still fronted by singer Dave Bingham and backed by original drummer Robin Boers who is said to have added a second bass drum ala Ginger Baker at this time. Aside from two takes of Bo Diddley’s ‘You Can’t Judge A Book’ (one being from a TV appearance), all tracks are written by Bingham and/or McKenna. They’re all solid early 1968 vintage blues rock pointing toward the future Mainline group and sometimes with a bit of a Byrds country vibe. Apparently this was not the kind of hit single music Yorkville had been hoping for however, and after the falling out with their label the Ugly Ducklings broke up. CD $10 SKU:15365

UNDEAD - First Worst and Cursed w DEE DEE RAMONE Label:DIONYSUS If late ’70s and early ’80s horror punk was a high school, and The Misfits were the angry goth kids, then The Undead would be the beer-swilling, joker-stoners of said institution. Their frolic through the seedy underbelly of horror punk is collected on First, Worst and Cursed. While other punks may have been bigger (and maybe better), no one beats The Undead’s uncanny ability to make disjointed rock songs with an edge so sharp you’d cut yourself. CD $10 SKU:19829

UNFOLDING - Freak Out Party (Classic 1967)-Label:GEAR FAB Recorded during the height of the Flower Power Movement, classic 1967 free form LP that features lots of sitars, chimes, harpsichord and other far out sounds. UNION 13Symptoms of Humanity (2003 Hardcore from Duane Peter's label) LAST COPIES!Label:DISASTER Records Early release on Duane Peter’s label. CD $10 SKU:2279

UP-TIGHT -THE NIGHT IS YOURS (masterpiece of dark psych(-Label:Essence Music (Brazil) High quality tip-on mini-LP gatefold packaging (plus insert) featuring new sonic treatment A mighty masterpiece of dark and wild psychedelia from the Japanese three-piece legends! Fuzz and reverb drenched jamming sounds from the basements of Hamamatsu evoking the always welcomed ghosts of Amon Düül and Les Rallizes Denudes. Originally released as an instantly sold-out LP edition on Sloow Tapes in 2011, Essence decided to do justice and make 'The Night Is Yours' available again, this time as a CD edition limited to 200 copies. Housed in Essence's high quality tip-on mini-LP gatefold packaging (plus insert) featuring new sonic treatment by the mastermind Aoki Tomoyuki and expanded triply artwork by Bart De Paepe! "Tokyo psych monsters Up-Tight come out of the classically wasted/drug-damaged school of excessive fuzz and reverb, giving the nod to the endless jam style of Les Rallizes Denudes while spiking their sound with dark downer ballads that owe as much to The Jacks as they do to The Velvet Underground. 'The Night Is Yours' is the absolute apex of their catalogue to date, crossing beautiful comedown folk-psych moves with whole sides of extended scorch. Indeed, there's a new focus on psychedelic ritual here, especially apparent on the staggering 'She's So Heavy' with choirs of disembodied monks chanting in the background while the bass - played with all of the thunderous power of Mik from Kousokuya - marches the group ever forward and vocalist Tomoyuki hovers over the track like a wraith. If you can picture Spacemen 3 circa 'The Perfect Prescription' produced by Ghost circa 'Temple Stone' then you're close to the outrageous levels of psychedelic excess captured here. Tomoyuki's guitar tone has to be heard to be believed, with tactile garage punk crunch put to the service of endlessly euphoric orbits of three droning chords. Up-Tight have been responsible for a buncha the most memorable releases to come out of the post-PSF underground but this has to be their recorded pinnacle, the perfect balance of two chord Velvet downers and strung-out post-Rallizes string violence. One of our records of the year so far! Highly recommended!" (Volcanic Tongue). CD $16 SKU:18689

UR FUNKTION /SVART SNO.- ST ( 80s Swedish HC ) LAST COPIESLabel:GTA Records HARDCORE / THRASH FROM SWEDEN . RECORDED FROM 1988 thru 1992 . CD $15 SKU:4191

VAINICA DOBLE -ST LAST TWO (Super rare Spanish psych 1971)Label:WAH WAH Probably the rarest and most sought-after LP in the Spanish collector's market, the first album by Gloria Van Aerssen & Carmen Santonja is at last reissued as it deserves. On the twelve songs they wrote for their debut album, originally released on Ópalo in 1971, Vainica Doble blended folk, soft rock, pop and a dose of psychedelia. The fantastic, colorful cover was designed by Ivan Zulueta, artist and film director (he was the mastermind behind the cult movies 1, 2, 3... Al escondite inglés! and Arrebato), and is reproduced here in all its glory, along with extensive liner notes by Àngel Maeztu. Including 2 non-LP single tracks. All their Ópalo recordings collected in a fantastic edition. Made, as always, with love and devotion by the Wah Wah team.” CD $15 SKU:20445

VERA SIENRA-Nuestra soledad” (1969) + “Vera(1972) Label:LION It was—and is—almost impossible to categorize Vera Sienra’s musical style, but we’ll try: wistful songs with the world-weariness of Fado, the gravel throated delivery of Marlene Dietrich, and the pulsating sadness of the bossa nova. This Lion Productions release comes with a 28-page booklet which contains background on the remarkable poetess/artist that is Vera, plus lyrics in English and in the original Spanish, historical background on the Uruguayan scene, photos, and a brief overview of the legendary Sondor label. This deluxe CD edition is limited to 500 copies CD $10 SKU:20353

VICTORS - Victorious ( Brit Invasion)- Label:ARF ARF “Before there was the Litter, there were the Victors. Including two future members (bassist Jim Kane and vocalist Denny Waite) of that fab Minneapolis combo, the Victors didn’t have the psycho-destructo stage show, fiery sound, and psychedelicized pyrotechnics of their successors. But their repertoire of British Invasion covers laid the groundwork for the Litter, and they had the teen garage sound that propelled them to battle of the bands victories and into the hearts of garage fans when five unreleased recordings were first unearthed by Arf! Arf! on The Scotty Story (now out of print) in 1993 Victorious expands the Victors’ legacy with not only those five, but also 21 previously unreleased tracks, including eight relics from their beginnings as a surf-styled band, a stunning seven-song demo tape, five spirited covers from a 1966 rehearsal, and a raw romp through “Gloria” (or “G-L-O-O-R-A,” as they erroneously spelled it!) straight off an acetate. It also includes the now legendary 1965 Scotty single, “Beer Bust Blues” b/w “Scotch Mist,” in which four-fifths of the band (billed as the Scotsmen) romped as their friend Pete Lokken did his best “Surfin’ Bird”/“The Crusher” vomit-tone into the mikeVictorious traces the evolution of the Excelsior, Minn. miscreants from a ’64 surfy combo (named after a Dick Dale song, “The Victor”) following in the footsteps of the Trashmen and fellow Minnetonka high school pals the Ready Men and the Yetti Men to a British Invasion-styled combo covering Them and the Yardbirds in 1965—before it was cool It was all over for the Victors by 1966, but their legacy lived on when Kane and Waite joined former members of the Tabs to form the Litter, a band that grew from garage Yardbirds roots into one of the most innovative hard rock bands on the scene by the late ’60s—and that has been documented on four Arf! Arf! CDs. Victoriousadds to that legacy with 31 stompin’ tracks and an extensive 20-page book featuring tons of archival photos and graphics, a band history by Doug Sheppard of Ugly Things magazine, and recollections from their producer, Warren Kendrick, the man who wrote and produced the Litter’s definitive version of “Action Woman.” CD $14 SKU:6167

VILLENETTES- LADY LUCK(girly/garage/surf/rockabilly) Label:OFF THE HIP The Villenettes are a rock’n’roll girl gang from Adelaide, Australia. They love Elvis, bad horror movies, leather jackets, and running amok on a Saturday night. They play loud riff-driven songs about zombies, cowboys and jerks and sound a bit like The Shangri La’s jamming with The Ramones, with Poison Ivy on guitar. They want to make you dance like the devil and party like it’s 1959. CD $7 SKU:19251

VINICIUS DE MORAES -Modernism and Bossa Nova-Label:ACME Vinicius de Moraes, Rio de Janeiro born poet and diplomat (he worked for the Brazilian Foreign Ministry in North America, France and Uruguay), was a truly singular figure in his nation's rich culture. In 1954 he wrote the play Orfeu da Conceição , which was soon adapted by French director Marcel Camus into the film, Black Orpheus, a controversial, but enormously popular movie which impressed early 1960s audiences with its beautiful soundtrack and panoramic technicolor views of Rio de Janeiro. This él collection begins with seven de Moraes/Jobim songs from the original 1956 Black Orpheus performed by Jobim, Roberto Paiva and Luis Bonfá (including “Someone to Light Up My Life” from that production, later recorded by Frank Sinatra) before presenting an anthology of de Moraes lyrics recorded by artists like Jon Hendricks, Carlos Lyra, Joao Gilberto, Cardoso, Bonfá and de Moraes himself. Future jazz/bossa standards “Agua de Beber (Water to Drink),” “How Insensitive” and “The Girl from Ipanema” can all be sampled here in their original Portuguese. All but five songs here were written by the team of Jobim and de Moraes, making this collection a tribute to the enduring music of both men. CD $5 SKU:20677

VOLTA SOUND- THIS IS THE YIN AND THE YANG (BJM/SPACEMEN 3 STYLE) -Label:DIONYSUS /ORANGE SKY The Volta Sound follow up March 2001's critically My All American Girl and November 2001's Fast Light With Radio Signal EP (Elephant Stone Records) with their most powerful recording to date. While the aforementioned releases are fantastic collections of songs, this one flows like a true album, a cosmic space rock masterpiece, holding its own with the likes of Spacemen 3's The Perfect Prescription and The Brian Jonestown Massacre's Their Satanic Majesties Second Request. CD $5 SKU:19811

VOX DEI- Es Una Nube, Non Hay Duda (It is a Cloud, No Doubt) ( 0s Argentine power trio ) - Label:WORLD PSYCHEDELIA (Korea) "the power-trio Vox Dei is often regarded as one of the most important Argentinean bands; in 1973. CD $8 SKU:19069

WARLOCKS- ST (Spacemen 3, Elevators style) Label:BOMP Records Debut EP CD. Amazing band, think Velvets, Spacemen 3, 13h Floor Elevators. “On its six-track debut, this L.A. band seems to exist in a kind of opiated haze, redolent of Spacemen 3, a heavier Velvet Underground, and (I suppose) the Jesus and Mar Chain. Occasionally things get a bit more wired, as on the awesomel rollicking "Cavemak Rock." Bomp supremo Greg Shaw is known to be a big fan of these guys, so they'd get my vote even if they didn't have the class to close their album with a 12-minute, 35 second workout entitled "Jam of the Warlocks." - The Big Takeover CD $5 SKU:2085

WAVES OF FURY - Thirst Digipack -SAALE - Label:ALIVE Thirst’ is the debut album from Somerset based Waves Of Fury. This 10 track debut long player sees Carter Sharp (vocals), Bim Williams (horns), Fil Ward (guitars/vocals), James Macphee (drums) and Jamie Bird (pianos/ vocals) take up the rhythm & blues blueprint and filter it through a 40+ year historical path that encompasses everything from Motown & Stax to The Stooges, Clah, Spiritualized & The Mary Chain. It’s a sonic blast of an album, and a welcome breath of fresh air. ‘Thirst’ was recorded at PJ Harvey’s studio in Bristol.

"Scuzzy proto-punk in the vein of Iggy Pop morphing into a Motown-beat driven garage track. Sounds like a mess; but this isn’t impossibly cluttered, it’s impossibly good. All bursts of horn and screeching vocals – it sounds like a forgotten gem from the Ace Records catalogue, but it’s brand new." – Nicholas Burman / Artrocker

"They have found a way to reconcile their twin passions: Stooges and Stax, garage and soul, rock’n'roll’s trash aesthetic and the exuberance and jubilation of old-style R&B." – The Guardian

"Has a Rolling Stones swagger… it’s like Steppenwolf jamming with The Commodores and is every bit as magnificent as that alliance should be." –å God Is In The TV

"An unholy alliance of scowling, snarling vocals, sleazy guitar licks, Motown horns, and high octane percussion." – The Mad Mackerel

"A full assault on the senses. Lou Reed, Iggy & The Stooges, the New York Dolls influences are clear. A sonic treat!" – Blast 1386

"WOF really don’t sound that much like anyone else. The closest comparison is probably to the jazzier numbers on The Clash’s London Calling, but this is far, far weirder. Lead single ‘Businessman’s Guide to Witchcraft’, manages to tie soulful piano and razor-edged horn stabs to raging, spitting vocals and noisy guitar – it sounds improbable and unpleasant, but, incredibly, it works wonders." – The New Thing CD $5 SKU:14633

WAYGOOD, OTIS BLUES BANDST (1969 acid blues from South Africa)Label:FRESH Excellent album from one of South Africa's best kept secrets, this is slow acid blues with amazing fuzz guitars and gentle passages with flute playing to die for. Long extended jams on certain tracks get heavier and heavier. The first nine tracks on this disc are their complete Parlophone label album from 1970, including their classic takes on traditional tunes 'Watch 'n Chain' and 'I Can't Keep From Crying', plus their burning version of 'Fever'—not blues rock as one might think—it's bluesy no doubt, but with flute and saxophone giving a hippie jamming Sweetwater vibe to the proceedings; three bonus tracks are from their jazzier 1971 Parlophone album "Ten Claps and a Scream"; liner notes and photos have complete band history. They came from Rhodesia in 1969 and had people freaking out straight away at their high-octane live shows; by 1971 they were gone—and rock in Africa was never the same again! CD $15 SKU:11153

WAYGOOD, OTIS BLUES BAND- Simply Otis Waygood ( Rare South African psych blues ) -Label:FRESH FRUIT The band's second album that saw the blues based sound of their debut evolve into a more acid rock sound; the songs are longer and more improvisational (tracks like “In the Sun1 and The Messenger); includes six bonus tracks from their third and final album "Ten Light Claps and a Scream"‹these six plus the three bonus tracks on the 3S/T2 Otis Waygood CD completing the third album; so buy both discs and you have all three records for the price of two CDs. CD $15 SKU:20062

WEDGE-KILLING TONGUE(1960s garage/psych style)-Label: HEAVY PSYCH SOUNDS CD version in a digipack. Sophomore full length by Berlin based '60s garage/psych outfit Wedge. Their sound is accordingly archaic, extremely effective, made from solid rock and when used correctly, causes fire... especially live! CD $12 SKU:19624

WHISKEY HOWL- ST(Obscure 1972 heavy Blues)Label:PACEMAKER First time available on CD for this obscure Canadian funk-laden heavy blues rocker, originally released in 1972 by Warner Brothers. Whiskey Howl remains one of the great success stories of the early CanCon era. They were a blues band that enjoyed a large following, appeared on legendary concert bills and yet, they left only one (memorable) studio album. The record quickly garnered rave reviews and airplay on FM stations across Canada. And that was that. The LP took some time to come out; by the time it was released in 1972, the band had broken up. Anyone who likes driving harmonica blues should have this in their collection. The LP took a little while to come out after its recording; by the time it was released in 1972, the band had broken up. Canadians all tell me "What a band!": John Witmer, vocals; Michael Pickett, harp and vocals; Richard Fruchtman, bass and vocals; Dave Morrison, guitar and vocals and Wayne Wilson, drums. Even though they are virtually forgotten, this has got to be one of the best jumpin' blues albums out there, with versions of Memphis Slims Mother Earth, Louis Jordans Caldonia and Let The Good Times Roll and B.B. Kings Early In The Morning. It also featured an oddity in those days of electric Chicago blues, an a capella version of Leadbellys Rock Island Line. There are good originals on the album as well, and one can only speculate as to what might have happened if the bands momentum could have been maintained. WHITE LIGHTNING - Strikes Twice (70s Power Hard Rock)- Label:ARF ARF Grinding with the axe of x-Litter distorter Zippy Caplan, White Lightning's current charged Minneapolis from 1968-1971. Proving that lightning does strike twice, the band electrified audiences first as trio and then struck again as they grew into a quintet. Both phases are documented on this hard rockin' 20-track CD with extensive liner notes by Doug Sheppard. CD $10 SKU:11403

WHITE NOISE SOUND- St- (3 tracks not on LP-Spacemen 3 related psych ) Label:ALIVE WHITE NOISE SOUND is the eponymous debut from the Swansea/Cardiff, Wales-based sextet. Completed with the help of Pete Kember (Spacemen 3, Spectrum and E.A.R) and magician Cian Ciaran (Super Furry Animals), the album is is a psychedelic dream-piece, and the realization of a band conjuring their own particular wall-of-sound -- at once relentlessly pulsating and blissed-out. WILDE FLOWERS- ST ( 60s Brit pop) booklet is packed with photos, cuttings and extensive sleeve notes - Label:VOICEPRINT Booklet is packed with photos, cuttings and extensive sleeve notes from the band members. It is simplistic to merely say that The Wilde Flowers were a popular music group based in the vicinity of Canterbury, England. Although the band name itself may not ring any bells for too many people (they never released any records during the band’s lifetime, from 1964-1967), it was a pillar of the legendary Canterbury scene of the mid-to-late sixties. The Wilde Flowers have assumed an almost mythical status simply because of the musicians that passed through them. Band members included, at various times, Hugh Hopper (bass), Robert Wyatt (drums, vocals), Kevin Ayers (vocals) (all soon to form the Soft Machine), as well as the basis of influential Canterbury band, Caravan: Richard Sinclair (rhythm guitar, vocals), Pye Hastings (guitar, vocals), David Sinclair (keyboards), Richard Coughlan (drums) and Brian Hopper (lead guitar, alto saxophone, vocals). This CD is the very first commercially available record of the Wilde Flowers sessions. A number of tracks on this disc were recorded at a session at Regent Sound Studios on the 6 August 1969, though by this time, the careers of Soft Machine and Caravan were already underway; these tracks are of interest as they feature tracks recorded by Wyatt, Hugh Hopper and Pye Hastings: ‘Impotence’ (Hopper/Wyatt), ‘She Loves To Hurt ‘(Hopper), and ‘Memories’ (Hopper). A fourth track, ‘The Big Show’ (Brian Hopper), also sees Brian Hopper joining in. Thus one of progressive rock's most important bands came to an end with the formation of the Canterbury scene's most popular groups, Soft Machine and Caravan. Not all the members that passed through the ranks of The Wilde Flowers ended up in these two bands. Brian Hopper also formed the short-lived band Zobe, some of whose recordings also appear on this disc. CD $8 SKU:14884

WILLIAM PENN AND HIS PALS -ST(1966 garage) LAST COPIES Label:BEATRECORDS (USA) The ultimate garage rock album, recorded in 1966 by one of the ultimate garage rock groups. William Penn V (and/or William Penn and His Pals) are famous for the single ‘Swami.’ Here are all the songs ever recorded by this group. “Acid-punk outfit William Penn and His Pals formed at the College of San Mateo in late 1964; originally dubbed the DiscCounts, the founding lineup comprised singer Neil Holtmann, guitarist Mike Dunn, bassist Steve Sweet and drummer Ron Cox. Keyboardist Dave Lovell signed on in early 1965, and a few months later the group significantly overhauled its lineup and look--adopting the moniker William Penn and His Pals, the band (now Holtmann, Cox, Lovell, guitarist Mike Shapiro and bassist Steve Leidenthal) adopted Revolutionary War-era stage garb that included ruffled shirts and tri-cornered hats. The addition of former Nomads guitarist Jack Shelton swelled the roster to a six-piece, and for a short time, the lineup also included a second drummer, Mickey Hart, who would later sign on with the Grateful Dead. In early 1966 keyboardist Gregg Rolie replaced Lovell—in time he assumed the lion's share of vocal duties as well, resulting in Holtmann's dismissal from the group. William Penn and His Pals were a regular presence on the Bay Area live scene, opening for the Jefferson Airplane, Paul Revere and the Raiders and Them; in 1966, they cut their lone single ‘Swami’ (credited to the William Penn Fyve), later anointed an underground classic thanks to its inclusion on the third Pebbles collection. A deal with the Fantasy label was pending, but in 1967 the group dissolved, with Rolie subsequently joining Santana.” ~ Jason Ankeny, All Music Guide CD $10 SKU:20451

SWEET SURRENDER - EMBER POP (OBSCURE 70S) Label:FANTASTIC VOYAGE Collectors will cherish the recordings of the more obscure artists. From Record Collector: “As a follow-up to Rainy Day Mind, Fantastic Voyage’s second trawl through the Ember label’s pop archives proves that bantamweights can sometimes conjure forth a more evocative picture of a given era than the big hitters. Sweet Surrender comes across like a Tony Blackburn radio show circa 1970: untainted by heaviosity, cheerfully free of social comment and aimed simply at urging the Radio 1 Roadshow faithful to shuffle gamely onto the dancefloor in their knee boots and hot pants. The Rusty Harness version of 'Take Me For A Little While' packs an ecstatic Northern soul thump and is a definite highlight, alongside girl group Mother Trucker’s chunky contributions ('Explosion In My Soul,' 'Wrap It Up'), 'Simone' by Mamas & Papas escapee Denny Doherty, Polly Niles’ sprightly take on 'For What It’s Worth' and Blue Beard’s endearingly rustic 'Country Man', on which the vocalist sounds as though he’s been smoking an exhaust pipe in the Appalachians since boyhood.” Nice shrink-wrapped slip-case packaging. SWITCHED ON BOB-A Tribute to Boob Moog-Label:BELLA CASA Bob Moog and his glorious, poetic instruments are the historic foundation of electronic music. "Switched on Bob" is a tribute to the late Bob Moog. The concept started with the enthusiasm of Maurizio Er Man Mansueti (Transistors), Luca Luke Cirillo (Transistors), and Paolo Bruno Margoni (Margoo) in September 2005 at the Transistors’ Lab. The idea was to collect materials for a multimedia-CD with the participation of a selected group of artists who were each to contribute a piece inspired by Moog’s huge influences on music, design, graphic illustration, or simply inspired by the beautiful sounds of Moog’s own instruments. Since Bob Moog was neither composer nor recording artist, this tribute relies on artists performing relatively short synthesizer pieces Sometimes the results are clever and touching: the Transistors’ track, 'Switched on Bob,' which has neat sound effects and chant-like unison singing supporting a soft lead, is pretty terrific. And Funki Porcini’s take on Henry Mancini’s 'Moon River' (called 'Moog River') is a natural for synth. Timeless Sonic Factory’s rockin’ 'The Day the Moog Stood Still' samples dialogue from the great 1950s sci-fi film The Day the Earth Stood Still. This is not a conventional compilation, but instead an authentic project dedicated to the father of modern synthesizers. COMP CD $8 SKU:19078

THREE O CLOCK MERRIAN WEBSTER TIME - 22 Psych Sounds from Texas. 66-68Label:CICADELIC RECORDS (USA) By the time 1966 ended, many of the groups in Texas that started out playing British Invasion and folk-rock music, were now immersing themselves in the newly emerging psychedelic music. The five groups that comprise this album reflect the changes that occurred during this period and four of them even changed their names to sound more psychedelic. The Nomads became Smoke, Carrols Mood became The Sights And Sounds, The New Imperials became The Front Page News, and The Boys became The Remaining Few. Represented by twelve tracks on this album, The Nomads/Smoke, started out playing folk-rock music, but by 1967 went psychedelic-as witnessed by their “freak-out” version of “My Little Red Book” replete with backwards tapes. “Carrols Mood” went from singing ballads to surreal songs such as “Mystical Bells”. The Front Page News went from the soul of “Baby Let Me Bang Your Box” to the fuzz drenched “Thoughts and Afterthoughts”. If the 13th Floor Elevators were the epitome of what a Texas psychedelic band was, then the groups on this album were not far behind in trying to emulate that state of existence. Here then are twenty-two tracks compiling the changes that occurred from late 1966 to 1968, when the Texas bands went metaphorically speaking from “Kool-Aid” to “Electric Kool-Aid Acid” COMP CD $8 SKU:13278

TWO TIMING BABY -Ember Sixties Pop: Volume 2, 1961-1962Label:FANTASTIC EMBER In 1960, Jeffrey Kruger launched Ember Records as an independent, one of very few in the UK, where the majors held sway. Straight away, the label set about trying to break into the charts with many fine pop releases. The Ember Sixties Pop series compiles the best of those records. “Two Timing Baby” picks up the story from where Say When: Ember Sixties Pop Volume 1 (FVCD044) left off. Carter, Lewis & The Southerners first Ember single ‘Two Timing Baby’/’Will It Happen To Me’ features Joe Meek engineering, Geoff Goddard on piano, Albert Lee on guitar, Chas Hodges on bass and Bobby Graham on drums. The Meek connection continues with Mark Douglas only single: Joe produced ‘It Matters Not’/’Upside Down’ and Tornado Clem Cattini confirms he drums on both tracks. American songwriters Buddy Kaye and Phil Springer penned many hits, including ‘The Next Time’ for Cliff Richard. They brought several songs to Ember and Grant Tracy was the adaptable vocalist on ‘The Great Matchmaker’/’The Tears Came Rolling Down’ and the follow-up flip ‘Taming Tigers.’ Other beneficiaries of the prolific Kaye and Springer were Johnny Carson (‘Are You Anyone s Girl’/’Teenage Bachelor’ and, again, ‘The Tears Came Rolling Down’) and Sandra Gale (‘Hello Heartache’/’If She s Right For You’) who had been girl singer with the Ray Ellington Quartet, joining Ember when Ellington did. Kruger chose the songs for Lita Roza’s single with the aim of moving her sound towards pop and rock n roll, and she turns in fine performances on ‘Mama (He Treats Your Daughter Mean)’/’(He s My) Dreamboat,’ aided by a driving band led by Tony Crombie. Brooklyn-born Kerry Adams recorded her single in New York, conducted by future soul giant Jerry Ragovoy. The Dale Sisters cute harmonies are evident on their second Ember single, ‘Road To Love’/’Secrets.’ Tommy Sanderson’s second Ember 45 combined trad-jazz ‘Ding Dong Rag’ with groovy ‘Piano A Go Go,’ which would have made a great theme for a TV detective show. Many of these original singles are highly collectable (mint copies of Mark Douglas are valued at £75, Carter, Lewis & The Southerners at £50 and Lita Roza at £30). Subsequent volumes will carry the story through to the end of the sixties, with further sought after tracks included. The series is complemented by compilations devoted to beat and rock from the Ember vaults. Recordings are mastered from tape, where available, and booklets illustrated with sleeve and label shots. Nice shrink-wrapped slip-case packaging. COMP CD $8 SKU:19205

VELVET REVOLUTIONS- VOL. 2: 1968-1971 VA (Iron Curtain 60s psych!)- Label:PARTICLES Eastern bloc rock! 'Velvet Revolution Volume Two' celebrates the hugely innovative and unique sound that was engineered behind the infamous Iron Curtain in cold war Eastern Europe. Enigmatic, bizarre and genious are just a few words that could describe this music, yet they only offer brief praise of the overlooked craft created by a generation whose hindered hopes and dreams were recorded in the 1960s and 1970s. These sounds survive as monumental works in their own right and stand as a testament to their art whilst serving a lesson to those in the west who thought they knew it all. COMP CD $12 SKU:20137

BRACKETT,ALAN LEE LAST COPIES -Peanut Butter Conspiracy Theories: Lost Songs 1967-1968-Label:OUT-SIDER Out-Sider present Peanut Butter Conspiracy Theories: Lost Songs 1967-1968, previously unreleased recordings by The Peanut Butter Conspiracy's main-man, Alan Lee Brackett. Mostly written and recorded in 1967, when PBC were at their fame peak, Alan explores a number of different styles, encompassing fuzzed-out garage numbers, sunshine pop, folk rock and full blown psychedelia. Including ahead of its time garage-psychedelic, DIY homemade recordings on which Alan plays all instruments by himself plus pro-sounding studio cuts. Although best known as a member of The Peanut Butter Conspiracy, Alan Brackett enjoyed a long career in the music business that book-ended his time with that legendary group. A multi-talented musician so adept at playing numerous musical instruments, he was a veritable one man band, and a skilled songwriter who penned many of the PBC's best loved songs. Alan's musical pedigree is second to none. From his early days on the folk circuit through his time with one of the West Coast's premier psychedelic groups and on to his solo career in the seventies, he crafted a body of work that many musicians would envy. Most of the tracks included here were recorded by Alan between 1967 and 68 at his home studio, using a Teac A1200 tape deck. His employed an innovative DIY approach: he used improvised drum kits made up from household objects and manipulated amps and guitars to create feedback and distortion effects. The remaining tracks from this collection were laid down during sessions at a pro studio, Hollywood Sound, although such is the quality of Alan's home recordings you would be hard pressed to single out which ones were made in more professional surroundings. There are surprising guests such as Glen Campbell, who plays tasty lead guitar on "Freeways Of Love". Alan also collaborates with his friend Knox Henderson (songwriter of some of the hits for Mouse & The Traps) on a couple of tracks included here. Songs like "Shell Of A Man", or "Blowin' My Mind Over You" could've been easily included on any of the Peanut Butter Conspiracy albums, while others like "Summertime Changes" or "Love's Only Sleeping" are amazing examples of homemade, DIY psych-fuzz. Master tape sound; Insert with detailed liner notes by Gary Newell (Shindig!, Ugly Things), track-by-track comments by Alan Lee Brackett and rare photos. LP $15 SKU:18296

BRAINTICKET - COTTONWOODHILL (ACID PSYCH 1971 (+CD)Label:LILITH Repress! On 180-gram vinyl and coming with a bonus CD of the album. Being as LSD was first developed in a laboratory in Basel, it is perhaps no coincidence that one of the most "far out" albums of all time was made by this Swiss band (no small feat, given the competition!). Brainticket's 1971 debut, 'Cottonwoodhill', begins normally enough with two fine psychedelic/kraut rock-influenced tracks, but the remainder of the album plays like an acid trip with a soundtrack, dominated by Joel Vandroogenbroeck's endless droning organ, a variety of musique concrète-type sound effects and vocalist Dawn Muirs trippy vocals. The album, banned in several countries, even came with this self-imposed warning: "After Listening to this Record, your friends may not know you anymore." / "Only listen to this once a day, your brain might be destroyed!". LP $19 SKU:19708

COSMIC MICHAEL- St (Ultra-crude basement garage psych and acid-boogie-blues from 1969 ) - Label:OUT-SIDER Ultra-crude basement garage psych and acid-boogie-blues from 1969!!! First ever vinyl reissue, original artwork, insert with reproduction of the original poster plus pasteable reproductions of original LP labels like those that came with the original release. Newly remastered sound Who was the mysterious Cosmic Michael? Nobody knows for sure…rumour goes that he was a freak from New York who later relocated to the West Coast after living the Woodstock dream. That’s all we know about him. But before vanishing without trace, Cosmic Michael self-released a couple of primitive, home-made albums on his Bliss label. This is his first one, DIY stoner bluesy garage psychedelia with crude organ, guitars and vocals. Featuring underground classics like “Cosmic Michael Theme” (covered in 2013 by neo-psych band Psychic Ills) and “Now That You’ve found it” among others.. “One of the least “cosmic”-sounding cosmic LPs around, with a loose urban soundcheck vibe using equal parts Vox organ, piano and crude guitar, on top of which Michael semi-improvs lyrics to a steady basement boogie beat. An unusual LP that falls between any genres you can think up; The top attraction is Cosmic Michael’s “Theme” which describes in third person the acid-indulged transformation he’s undergone: “…some kind of chemical change is going on in poor Michael’s brain…” set to a rockin’ garage fuzz beat” - Patrick Lundborg (Acid Archives) “…Stoned '60s DIY rock 'n'roll. You can call it lo-fi or home made, but the message remains: Cosmic Michael preaches love and freedom, and he's a mean boogie-woogie player too. The songs run one after the other, as if part of one spontaneous recording …” LP $15 SKU:19525
