GIRLS GO POWER POP -80s and 90s powerpop!Label:BIG BEAT Come On Let’s Go!”, our survey of power pop gems from the 70s and 80s, was one of Ace’s best sellers of 2019, with critics lavishing four and five star reviews upon the compilation. However, we grew to rue the lack of the female voice on the CD, with the Shivvers being the sole representative. With that in mind, we now unveil “Girls Go Power Pop!”, an entire collection of feminine decks from the 80s and 90s, all delivered with the kind of sassy pizazz you would expect from acts such as the Go-Go’s and the Bangles. We predict that “Girls Go Power Pop!” is destined to be loved by fans of power pop and cherished by aficionados of girl-pop. Anyone with an ear for a good tune and a taste for snappy, guitar-based pop should grab this real fast. Girls rule, OK!COMP CD $18 SKU:24458

REDUCERS-Cruise to Nowhere (70s w catchy melodies and killer licks) Label:RAVE ON 1985 followup to Let’s Go. Inner sleeve features unique art and full lyrics100% analog mastering and pressing. "There were absolutely no gimmicks, false pretenses towards stardom, or slick attitude; they were the real deal." - AllMusic, Cruise To Nowhere was the result of two weeks in the studio with a handful of songs, some finished, most unfinished and some unwritten. The resulting LP was surprisingly consistent given the haphazard nature of the recording, and college radio once again picked up on the album's standout track "Fistfight at the Beach." Another regional tour followed, and the wear and tear of the road soon shown its strain on the boys from New London. It would be another 3 years until The Reducer's next release.
LP $12 SKU:24472

REDUCERS-Guitar Bass, Drums (70s w catchy melodies and killer licks) Label:RAVE ON Triumphant final LP featuring the anthemic "Don't Ya Wanna Rock" and "My Problem" with guest vocals from Mark Mulcahy (Miracle Legion, Polaris). These 11 tunes sizzle, with revved-up guitars cruising along over taut bass and spot-on drums drawn from the garage- and pub-rock traditions. The guitar riffs are tight and loud, and the melodies take unerring aim at that part of your brain that feeds them onto an endless loop for your continued (and continual) listening pleasure.- Eric Danton, Hartford Courant LP $12 SKU:24475

PAYBACKS - Harder and Harder (real-deal Detroit R&R ) Label:GET HIP The Paybacks are real-deal Detroit R&R with capital letters and still stand as one of the city's best kept secrets. Fueled by the rocker-with-a-heart-of-gold vocals of Wendy Case, on ‘Harder And Harder ’, the Paybacks belt out nearly a dozen honest and passionate songs loaded with hooks. Their’s no denying that Wendy voice sounds like a combination of Wendy O. Williams and Joan Jett as she belts out eleven strong songs of sonic brash pop with blazing hard rock riffs and some firey guitar leads. The Paybacks are equal parts swagger and stagger as they plug away on melodic rockers like "Bright Side" and the glittery blues anthem "Jumpy." The scorching riff rockers like "Superrider" and "Scotch Love" assert how powerful and unrelenting this Motor City quartet can be and the soulfully executed ballad "Can You Drive?" suggests the band can do more than raise hell. ‘Harder And Harder’ sounds like a sonic combustion of The Runayways, the MC5 and the Dirtbombs played with a ton of heart and soul. And by calling this sonic firecracker ‘Harder and Harder’, the Paybacks will never be accused of false advertising. CD $10 SKU:21820

PINK FAIRIES -The Polydor YEARS- 3 CD SET (1967 underground supergroup)-Label:FLOATING WORLD Three CD set packed with bonus tracks, beautifully re-mastered! Pink Fairies grew out of The Deviants, a loose-knit band formed in 1967 by members of the West London hippie commune in Ladbroke Grove. Consisting primarily of vocalist Mick Farren, guitarist Paul Rudolph, bassist Duncan Sanderson, and drummer Russell Hunter, the group also featured satellite members Marc Bolan, Steve Peregrine Took, and players from the band Group X, later rechristened Hawkwind. After a disastrous US tour, Farren was fired and the remaining Deviants returned to London, where they recruited vocalist and former Pretty Things drummer Twink (born John Alder), who suggested the name Pink Fairies. Despite gaining a reputation for mythic debauchery, the group remained largely an underground sensation before signing to Polydor and releasing the three albums featured on this 3xCD set. The first two albums were recorded by the original line-up but Rudolph was replaced by Larry Wallis for the third (Kings Of Oblivion). Their first album (Never, Never Land) is the strongest of the three albums with solid 'heavy' guitar from Paul Rudolph and some furious drumming from Twink. The four bonus tracks include alternate edits of three great tracks plus the early single 'The Snake'. CD $15 SKU:22509

PLIMSOULS- Live! Beg, Borrow & Steal (80s POWERPOP!!)Label:ALIVE Live! Beg, Borrow & Steal" showcases the PLIMSOULS at the height of their power, tearing the roof off and on the verge of starting a riot on L.A.'s old Sunset Strip. Recorded at the Whisky A Go Go on October 31, 1981, this previously unreleased 18 song live album includes many of The Plimsouls' classics as well as plenty of surprises. It has been stunningly remastered, features previously unpublished and gorgeous photos by renowned photographer Bob Matheu, and also includes three pummelling tracks with special guests The Fleshtones (CD only).
The first vinyl pressing of the record includes a poster and is limited to 1,000 copies. Considering that all of The Plimsouls official studio releases are currently out of print, this explosive live document of the band igniting The Whisky nearly three decades ago stands as not only a highly anticipated release from the band, but also as a testament to the power of pure, unadulterated rock & roll.
Formed in 1978 by Peter Case (vocals, guitar) following his departure from The Nerves and The Breakaways, with Louie Ramirez (drums), Dave Pahoa (bass) and Eddie Muñoz (guitar), The Plimsouls effectively blended roots, British Invasion and garage rock into one unique soul-punk, garage-pop combo. "They boasted a soulful front man and gifted songwriter in Peter Case; a brittle, unconventional lead guitarist in Eddie Muñoz; and a gutsy, power-packed rhythm section in bassist Dave Pahoa and drummer Lou Ramirez. The ‘Souls didn’t just replicate the cliches of power pop, as so many others did – they, and especially Case, were intent on putting their own imprint on the rock and R&B styles they derived their sound from. Their keen originality and their ‘let’s-rock’ attitude removed them from the run of the mill. Despite the misguided notions of observers intent upon categorization, The Plimsouls were always their own men." — Chris Morris CD $10 SKU:11185

POPPEES -Pop Goes The Anthology ( LATE 70s POWERPOP ) -Label:BOMP he Poppees were one of the creators and the embodiment of what soon came to be known as the "Power Pop" sound of the late 70s. This long overdue anthology finally gives this notable and highly underrated band its due, elegantly chronicling the Poppees short but influential role in the history of the New York New Wave scene of the late 70's. While anchored around their two classic Bomp singles, "If She Cries/Love of The Loved" (the latter track produced by Craig Leon of the Ramones fame), and "Jealousy/She's Got It" (produced by Cyril Jordan of the Flamin' Groovies), "Pop Goes The Anthology" features never before released recordings, including demos, early live recordings, and culminating with a rip-roaring live performance at CBGB. It is complete with liner notes and unpublished photos. "After all, what would be more punk at that time than being in the Poppees - a band that emulated the early Beatles, from their moptops to their Cuban heels?" - WFMUFormed in In the mid-'70s in New York by Bob Waxman, Arthur Alexander, Paddy Lorenzo, and Donny Jackrel, later replaced by Jet Harris. PRETTY THINGS- EMOTIONS digipak -Label:MADFISH The Pretty Things were one of the most underrated rhythm & blues bands to come out of the mid-60's British rock explosion. So well-loved by Brits, they were often thought of in the same breath as The Rolling Stones. And, like a lot of great rhythm & blues based groups to come put of England, they stepped somewhat uneasily into the precarious psychedelic music explosion. However, in all fairness, The Pretty Things did come up with a pretty fine and original album, “Emotions." Superbly well-orchestrated (especially the gorgeous "The Sun," one of the album's standouts), The Pretty Things didn't lose sight of their R&B leanings, as tracks such as 'There Will Never Be Another Day' show. This reissue is also buttressed by a generous selection of bonus tracks seven of them - making it even more worthwhile. The highlight those is five remixes (four album cuts and "Progress") that remove many superfluous overdubs. If you want to, you can pretend that this “remixes EP" and the "Defecting Gray" single are the bridge between their blues and psychedelic albums…. if that’s what you like to do when listening to great music. Digipack packaging, complete with an 8-page booklet featuring sleeve notes from journalist and editor Paul Du Noyer (NME, Q, MOJO).The Pretty Things were fundamental in the development of British music. They enjoyed much critical success and were a huge influence on artists as diverse as David Bowie, Aerosmith, The Ramones, Bob Dylan, The Sex Pistols, The White Stripes, Kasabian, The Lightning Seeds and countless more. Their music has been used in feature films including Guy Ritchie's 'RocknRolla', and on TV shows as recent as Britannia II. The band created a rich music catalogue including the classic albums The Pretty Things, S.F. Sorrow & Parachute, and remained a significant artistic and creative force throughout their entire 55+ year career. They have continued to release iconic and influential recordings, right up to the present day, with a new album due for release later this year. They also remained a potent live act, as is shown on 'The Final Bow', highlighting their last electric gig at the O2 which featured special guests including Van Morrison and David Gilmour accompanying Phil and The Pretty Things live on stage. CD $12 SKU:23997

PRETTY THINGS-GET THE PICTURE- digipak-Label:MADFISH The band’s much-beloved second album, with six bonus tracks and liner notes. "The Pretty Things' second album, "Get the Picture?” (first released December 1965), has not only been remastered from original session tapes so the group sounds like their amps are practically right in your lap, but it's also been expanded to 18 songs with the addition of tracks cut for singles and EP releases from the same sessions. That's enough to recommend it even to casual fans — this is now a record that's just a few notches short of Rolling Stones level in the charisma department, and pretty tough any way you want to look at it. On 'Rainin' in My Heart,' they sound exactly like the Stones from the same era, missing only the little harmonica flourish that might have been added on the break. The liner notes go into the history of the group during this period in delightful detail, and the histories of various songs, most particularly 'L.S.D.,' which, amazingly, was cut as a demo and never redone for release, but just put out the way it was. In their good moments here, the Pretty Things approach Rolling Stones' territory, and even in their off moments, they're flying at the same level as the Kinks' album tracks.” —Bruce Eder, AllMusic The Pretty Things were fundamental in the development of British music. They enjoyed much critical success and were a huge influence on artists as diverse as David Bowie, Aerosmith, The Ramones, Bob Dylan, The Sex Pistols, The White Stripes, Kasabian, The Lightning Seeds and countless more. PRETTY THINGS- PARACHUTE -digipak-Label:MADFISH If "S.F. Sorrow" is the Pretty Things' "Sgt. Pepper," "Magical Mystery Tour,” and "Yellow Submarine" wrapped in one, then “Parachute" is their more succinct "White Album" and "Abbey Road." It's not just a time line comparison. The Pretties made this fascinating LP in the same studio as the Fab Four, London's Abbey Road, with Beatles engineer Norman Smith producing. 'The Good Mr. Square' replicates the three-part harmony the Beatles were so proud of on ‘Because.' Two songs later, the group assembles a brief, interconnected three-song suite like the famous ones on side two of Abbey Road. Bassist Wally Allen's vocals on tracks such as 'Sickle Clowns' have the same throaty, mad anguish that John Lennon exhibited on 'Yer Blues' and 'Happiness Is a Warm Gun.' If "S.F. Sorrow" is psychedelic rock grandeur, then “Parachute" is its more bitter twist, the dream dying and the witching hour upon us. Yet, if this isn't as much of a triumph, the creative neurons are still firing throughout a multi-varied, cohesive LP. Like "S.F. Sorrow," it's a concept LP. This time the topic is a generation caught between the conflicting calls of (rural) peace, love, and boredom, and (urban) sophistication, sex, and squalor in a harsh world. Somehow the departure of the band's main creative force, Dick Taylor, didn't diminish the writing and inspired variety. Allen stepped up big time into the collaborator role with singer Phil May. The harmonies remain a strong point on an otherwise rock-inclined record, and the nasty edge of perfectly balanced bombast in the best songs have been a lost art ever since. (There are eighteen minutes of good stuff tacked on the Snapper edition, taken from singles.)" CD $ SKU:23999

PRETTY THINGS-S.F SORROW (”A psychedelic masterpiece”)Label:MADFISH Issued in a cardboard fold out cover with 16 pages booklet One of the greatest albums of the psychedelic era, that’s what we say. “A psychedelic masterpiece,” says the Guardian. Re-mastered from the original Abbey Road tapes. "Who could ever have thought, going back to the Pretty Things' first recording session in 1965, which started out so disastrously that their original producer quit in frustration, that it would come to this? The Pretty Things' early history in the studio featured the band with its amps seemingly turned up to 11, but for much of S.F. Sorrow the band is turned down to seven or four, or even two, or not amplified at all, and they're doing all kinds of folkish things here that are still bluesy enough so you never forget who they are, amid weird little digressions on percussion and chorus; harmony vocals that are spooky, trippy, strange, and delightful; sitars included in the array of stringed instruments; and an organ trying hard to sound like a Mellotron. Sometimes one gets an echo of Pink Floyd's "Piper at the Gates of Dawn" or "A Saucerful of Secrets," and it all straddles the worlds of British blues and British psychedelia better than almost any record you can name. The album, for those unfamiliar, tells the story of "S.F. Sorrow," a sort of British Everyman -- think of a working-class, luckless equivalent to the Kinks' Arthur, from cradle to grave. And it does show a pathway between blues and psychedelia that the Rolling Stones missed entirely. This CD reissue on Snapper adds four valuable songs from their 1967-1968 singles ('Defecting Grey,' 'Mr. Evasion,’ 'Talkin' About the Good Times,' and 'Walking Through My Dreams'). This version of 'Defecting Grey' is the original, long, uncut five-minute rendition, which is not of trivial importance—it's superior to the shorter one used on the official single.” —Bruce Eder, AllMusic The Pretty Things were fundamental in the development of British music. They enjoyed much critical success and were a huge influence on artists as diverse as David Bowie, Aerosmith, The Ramones, Bob Dylan, The Sex Pistols, The White Stripes, Kasabian, The Lightning Seeds and countless more. PRIESTS-TALL TALES (fuzzed out dark Cramps meets Cynics vibe)Label:GET HIP Rochester, NY’s Priests began a career in music inspired by the seedier, darker almost ungodly aspects of life. Sonically influenced by the classic rock and roll sounds of yesteryear, the band forges ahead, creating the music of tomorrow in their own unique way. The band members seem to feed off of each other, which depending on moods, chemicals or mental stability can be incredibly mesmerizing or cryptically haunting. The Priests tend to break it down to the simplest level and build from there. Hypnotic guitar lines, fuzzed-out organ and tribalistic back beat mixed in with a dark Cramps meets Cynics vibe, build the foundations of their unusual and original sounds. CD $10 SKU:21819

While you may expect cheesy orchestra music it's actually the rawest, dopest and wildest psychedelic groove one could imagine. Stomping breaks, haunting spooky organ sounds and wet swampy bass lines from the very beginning to the last groove, completed with some strange sci-fi sounds and stereo FX. The LSD was certainly flowing richly during these sessions! CD $10 SKU:21727

PROYECTO A -Proyecto A& B (1974 Spanish Cosmic, acid-psych-soul-funk-prog)SAALE!-Label:SOMMOR Cosmic, acid-psych-soul-funk-prog extravaganza from Spain, 1971. Proyecto A was the brainchild of the great Frank Dubé from Barcelona. What can we say about him? A truly fascinating character: a pioneer of rock & roll and twist in Spain during the late 50s and early 60s, an accomplished accordion player, a showman, comedian, a Psychoaesthetics master…But he should also be considered as one of the first psychedelic pioneers in Spain due to his groundbreaking work on the Proyecto A album. Proyecto A was released in 1971 housed in an amazing gatefold sleeve depicting all the musicians wearing strange & bizarre psychedelic outfits. The project was shrouded in mystery (Frank used pseudonyms for all the musicians involved) and for many years the Proyecto A album has been plagued with many false rumors and stories. We set the record straight with this, the first ever reissue done in cooperation with Frank Dubé. This reissue also includes the previously unreleased Proyecto B recordings from 1974, which were meant to be the second Proyecto A album. Recorded at EMI studios in Barcelona but never released at the time, this features Frank Dubé backed by famous Spanish prog band Iceberg plus sax / flute player Juan Mena (ex-Máquina and Eddie Lee Mattison Band). RAINY DAY SAINTS-All These Strange Ghosts -Cleveland psych, garage punk, pure pop ,prog)Label:GET HIP You don’t have to listen to the Rainy Day Saints for long to surmise that their heady amalgam of psychedelia, garage punk, pure pop and prog-rock is the product of astute music fandom.Rainy Day Saints were born out of frustration, heartache, love and power chords. Setting controls for the heart of the sun is multi instrumentalist Dave Swanson. He and his cohorts parade along the rock and roll route oblivious to the fact that the scenery along the way has most definitely changed. In other words, they do what they want, when they want and for no one else but themselves. Why else would they reference Hawkwind, Roxy Music, Crazy Elephant and Johnny Thunders in one fell swoop! Selfish? Perhaps, but that is not their concern. It’s all about the melodies, the harmonies, the loud guitars, the driving bass, the bashing drums and the snarling saxophone. Things like : “pristine electrified paisley underground jangle”,“a nastier version of The Move and the harder side of the Dream Syndicate”, “an elegant almost British classicism of hazy, psychedelicate pop-rock swirls”, “ Cheap Trick meets The Nazz meets early Flaming Lips”, “reminds me of the Monkees”, and our favorite, “ Mr. Swanson is one talented motherfucker” are just a few of things that have been said about Rainy Day Saints CD $10 SKU:21817

RAINY DAY SAINTS-Diamond Star Highway(Cleveland psych, garage punk, pure pop ,prog) -Label:GET HIP You don’t have to listen to the Rainy Day Saints for long to surmise that their heady amalgam of psychedelia, garage punk, pure pop and prog-rock is the product of astute music fandom.Rainy Day Saints were born out of frustration, heartache, love and power chords. Swanson is one talented motherfucker” are just a few of things that have been said about Rainy Day Saints. After a 12 year recording silence, Paul Collins re-surfaced with Flying High, recorded at home with his new comrade in arms, guitar slinger Octavio Vinck and what would become the start of his new Spanish band. Flying High was a simple affair sporting songs that spanned Paul’s musical career and landscape, from the Beat-ish power chords of Rock n Roll Shoes and More Than Yesterday, to the all out melodic pop of Helen to the roots rocking Will You Be A Women the record encompasses all the facets of Paul’s writing ability, showcased with a simple and straight forward production style. LP $18 SKU:11915

CONJERTI, MORREALE & DIBLEY"-Earth Free (1970’s IYL Neil Young,CSNY-Label:VOID An album that has the unfinished feel of a demo record (which is good), a bit like Merrell Fankhauser's “Fapardokly” LP from 5 years earlier—except the main influence here is early Neil Young. The main appeal to present-day listeners will be the minor key acoustic guitar strumming that makes it a folk record, and the minimal but effective lead guitar that fleshes out the songs and gives them an unusual edge. The lyrics wont appeal to modern-day cynics, but the youthful, melancholic delivery gives them a depth beyond the misleading, easy-listening label assigned to this reissue. The title track is a simple but effective paean to natural beauty that closes the record in a satisfying manner. Comparable records in terms of feel would include the likes of Fenner, Leland & O'Brien, Dave Lamb & Gye Whiz, Songs of David Lewis, etc - if any of those appeal, then this record will also. Lysergia review: “Recently discovered Christian hippie 1970s folk/rock LP with a nice, loose vibe. Sound is typical for the style, rooted in a melodic CSNY sensibility, recalling Stills' melancholic moves in particular. I also catch an Eastcoasty "Big Pink" vibe here and there. Opening track is deceptively soft and poppy, after which the LP gradually increases its depth, ending up with some truly great numbers that rate alongside the best of the genre. Vocals are not remarkable but fit the overall reflective mood well, while the band plays loose (sometimes very loose) and laidback, with a bass unusually high in the mix for added groove. Comparisons made to Kansas City Jammers are useful, if you imagine this LP as the dark mirror image of the upbeat KCJ.” LP $18 SKU:23988

COVEN (USA) -(USA) WITCHCRAFT DESTROYS MINDS AND REAPS SOULS (1969)Label:REAL GONE Repress on fire and brimstone vinyl. Released in 1969 at the height of hysteria about satanism whipped up by the Manson killings, the album was withdrawn by the Dunwich label after a photo surfaced of Charles Manson carrying a copy. Whether it was coincidence, influence, or good old show biz imitation, Coven's 1969 album featuring the lead-off track 'Black Sabbath' was released the same year as the formation of the more popular heavy metal band. To make the story more even interesting, Coven featured a bass player named Oz Osborne. The soon-to-be-famous band Black Sabbath emerged a year after the release of this LP with a similar image and their own song called 'Black Sabbath.' LP $32 SKU:24050

DEL-TOROS -TEN STORIES HIGH (Dutch alternative surf rockers) SAALE!Label:DOWN AT THE NIGHTCLUB On 'Ten Stories High', Dutch alternative surf rockers Del-Toros once again unleash an exciting mixture of desert-, surf-, punk- and hardrock. But they changed the game big time as their instrumental side has completely taken over. The Del-Toros drift off into strange tangets and wave their freak flag into a fuzzy and reverb sheer sonic perfection. There is only one song on the album with vocals. Peter te Bos, singer of the famous Dutch garagerock band Claw Boys Claw is taking 'Rockettool' to a higher level like if Jim Morrison and William S. Burroughs joined forces. Bertus Borgers features on '2174'. Produced by Peter van Elderen and Guido Bruin, 'Ten Stories High' features 10 blistering and heavy songs that combine all their influences. The album comes in a gatefold cover, limited to 500 copies. LP $22 SKU:23259

A three piece rock-n-roll time bomb from New Orleans with a unique freaked-out sound. “Now THIS is what's been lost in the age of CD: rocking out and then getting out before one's welcome has been royally outstayed. Detonations have the same laudably single minded approach as Raw Power-era Stooges, paring everything down to pure driven riff.” - Shindig. “Sneered vocals, clunky rhythms and buzzsaw guitar riffs, all stripped of any non-essentials like harmony vocals and solos that consist of more than the song's main riff played louder.” – AMG LP $10 SKU:22946
