NIGHT SHADOWS - Vol 2 Little Phil Era 1964-67 (Atlanta gritty garage ) -Label:HATTRAX Gritty garage work from one of the coolest combos of the south in the 60s -- Atlanta's Night Shadows, a group with a sound that would have been right at home on the Sunset Strip! This second chapter in the group's career showcases the time when Little Phil took over as their lead vocalist -- a singer with a style that's much hipper than you might guess from his name, with a sense of darkness that really matches the raw pre-psyche guitars in the group. CD features 16 pages of notes and images from the group's history -- plus 14 titles that include "60 Second Swinger", "The Hot Rod Song", "I Did My Part", "In The Air", "So Much", "Dancing To A Different Beat", and "Perils Of Pauline". ODYSSEY- -Setting Forth (One of the ten rarest psych albums from the USA)gatefold mini-LP slv Deluxe Ed. 2xCD Label:LION This is truly one of the pinnacles of underground psychedelic music, recorded in 1969, released in an edition of fewer than 100 copies, and impossible to find as it only came in a plain white cardboard sleeve; an incredible, musically accomplished, hard rocking album of originals that jumps right out of the speakers and grabs you, from it’s opening In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida-esque riffs right to the grooving end. The 24-page booklet that accompanies this two-disc set has the complete band history by Odyssey leader Vinny Kusy, as well as rare photos from his own archive. Bonus tracks on disc one are three “basement recordings” from the “Setting Forth” era. The second disc contains Odyssey “Live at Levittown Memorial Auditorium: 1974,” a live recording that was never really meant to be, recorded by Odyssey’s sound engineer on a portable cassette recorder. It is the only document of Odyssey in their progressive rock phase, just before sometime Odyssey keyboardist Tom Doncourt and band-member Fred Callan recorded their legendary Cathedral “Stained Glass Stories” album.•One of the ten rarest psych albums from the USA•Sleeve notes by the group's leader and keyboardist Vinny Kusy CD $15 SKU:15490

This time around they went full throttle to create a true GARAGE PUNK album: “Out Of Touch”. With special guest appearances and production by Gregg Kostelich (The Cynics / Get Hip Records) on bass, and engineered by Pete Drivere (Blue Ash/Deadbeat Poets/Infidels), the album features a broad mix of psychedelia, pop, and punk elements…. “Out Of Touch” opens with title track written as an outlet for the frustrations of growing up in today’s political climate and circumscribing a pathway of your own. OOSTEN, MICHAEL - St (70s hippie psych) HAND SCREENED COVER w 3 bonus tracks.-Label:WAY GONE + LION PRODUCTIONS (USA) Keeping a band together was difficult in the late 1960’s. Tough too, because Michael Oosten was writing songs that veered away from pop-song structures. There was also the relative ease and lack of responsibility required for hauling around a guitar. So, Oosten took off, with a Martin guitar in tow, playing coffeehouses and clubs across the country. By the end of 1973, he was ready to record an LP—five psychedelic folk/rock tracks, ranging from the brightly smiling ‘Sunny Day’ to the epic ‘Hungry Horse Montana,’ where Oost switched seamlessly from Celtic picking to Middle Eastern chord progressions. Oosten filled out his folk/rock/psych sound with the help of a few friends: piano from Tom Hennick on ‘Hey Babe,’ vocals from Jan Reek on ‘Garden,’ and bass from Al Byla on ‘Sunny Day.’ Oosten's wayward vocals puts us in mind of other meandering faves from various eras (Incredible String Band, Perry Leopold, or the Meatpuppets, to name but three), and Oost proves himself a stellar guitarist in an eccentric and percussive mode. Considering the individualistic nature of the album's genesis, no surprise that marketing and publicity for the album was limited. Columbia Records expressed interest in Oosten's music; but after a single meeting with the label, it was clear that the album would be too difficult for the mainstream honchos to market. Oost and friend Lester D'ore (editor of Chicago countercultural paper Seed and designer of the Yippie flag) holed up at D'ore's Wisconsin commune farm to silkscreen each LP jacket by hand. For our deluxe Lion Productions replica edition, they’ve done that again—we've used the original screens for this hand-screened, hand-assembled replica edition. The work of a renegade, ripe for rediscovery. •Hand silk-screened jackets, using the original screens •180 gram vinyl w/replica labels + color insert •Sleeve notes by Michael Oosten•Limited to 500 copies, which come in multiple color variations LP $15 SKU:19264

OUTSIDERS- CQ MYTHOLOGY (GATEFOLD 2LP) 60s Dutchgarage ) SAAALE! - Label:PSEUDONYM RECORDS (NETHERLANDS) The original releases striking gatefold cover art, designed by artist Anton van der Gulik, was supposed to fold out into four rather than two panels. But apart from the album sleeve that Polydor has released, Van der Gulik made a second design. His four unused iron plate panels now house this CQ Mythology release, a sprawling double-album that stands as a kind of shadow version of the final album. Its a compelling document of a true masterwork-in-progress. LP $20 SKU:13502

PEANUT BUTTER CONSPIRACT - IS SPREADING - STEREO 1967 PRESSING-Label:COLUMBIA ARCHIVE COPY OF BOMP RECORDS, Small sticker on cover, VINYL is VG LP $35 SKU:22225

PENTAGON -Die Vertreibung der bösen. (70s German blues prog) SAALE! .Label:GARDEN OF DELIGHTS (Germany): "Pentagon was the first group on the small Munich label German Blues and Underground, which later on also released the two Siloah records. The 7” single was supposed to be followed by an LP, but it never got beyond the dubplate/acetate stage, a kind of demo pressing. A music cassette, however, was released, the simple cover of which was used for the LP cover, too. Although very young at the time, the three musicians already played respectable blues rock. The tracks of side 2 of the vinyl album were taken from the master tape, the tracks of side 1 were digitally decrackled by Cedar’s NoNoise system. It’s a first-class find, saved from oblivion in the very last minute. The title means in English “The expulsion of the evil spirits from the Pentagon”. Limited edition of 1000 numbered LPs. Comes with 8-page LP sized booklet. LP $18 SKU:20883

PERTH COUNTY CONSPIRACY - (UK-ST( Obscure 70s psych folk)-Label:FLASHBACK Recorded shortly after the release of the debut-LP, the band's obscure 1970 album that was recorded for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation gets reissued for the very first time. The tracks, rooted in psychedelic folkrock, are originals as well as striking cover versions of songs by Bob Dylan, Donovan and Smokey Robinson. The LP is pressed on 180-GRAM VINYL, including a thick gatefold sleeve, a flyer and a 16-page booklet offering a detailed band history and rare photos LP $32 SKU:23210

PIAZZA,ARMANDO - Suan (rare 1972 ACID PSYCH)-Label:MISSING VINYL Singer-songwriter Armando Piazza from Naples was joined by renowned US guitarist Shawn Phillips on bass, acoustic and electric guitar for this rarity, originally released on the obscure Black Beautiful Butterfly label in 1972; since it was sold only at concerts and by mail, it was even then difficult to find. And what a pity! Acid-psychedelic ballads in English, with bursts of fuzz guitar and excellent use of electric instruments as well as abundant acoustic guitar (the good people at Missing Vinyl say that the fuzz bass on ‘The House on the Hill’ will blow your mind and… speakers away)! This is an album considered to be one of the best, and is certainly one of the rarest European psychedelic albums, with original mint condition copies going nowadays for 1,000+ Euro. A heavy, yet subtle record, folky, with oddly inflected vocals and deliciously crunchy guitar. Limited edition, deluxe 180g vinyl, in a heavy deluxe double gatefold cover that is a replica of the complex original jacket.

POISON BOYS- Out of My Head (Heartbreakers/Dolls/Thunders style) - Label:DEAD BEAT Real Rock ‘n Roll ain’t dead folks, and Chicago’s Poison Boys bring a sleazy, greazy dose of the good stuff. With three grimy dudes that look like they’re days away from rehab, the Poison Boys look exactly like the same kind of reckless, drug-addled scuzz rockers that Johnny Thunders was lookin’ to recruit when he formed the Heartbreakers just after his departure from the New York Dolls. And any one of these motherfuckers woulda fit right in as the core spirit of the Poison Boys is the syringe addled sounds of the Heartbreakers, the Dolls and Thunders solo material with echos of fellow guitar-slinging, riff ‘n roll disciples like Hanoi Hanoi Rocks, the Berlin Brats, Dead Boys, Nervous Eaters and the Joneses. ‘Out Of My Head’ lives up to it’s Junkie Rock name spewing the best kind of smutty, sloppy Rock & Roll sleaze across 12 guitar-centric, gutter dwelling tracks that reek of shitheads, ex-girlfriends, bad decisions and life gone wrong. The LP jacket is adorned with cool looking cover art by Alex Hagen and includes a lyrics sheet insert as well. LP $15 SKU:22040

PYRAMID - ST (SPACEY KRAUTROCK)-Label:MENTAL EXPERIENCE •Digital download card. •Insert with liner notes by Alan Freeman (The Crack In The Cosmic Egg, Ultima Thule). •“…from trippy phases with echo guitars and Mellotron onto headfirst plunges into space-rock overdrive territory. In all, an excellent album of spacey Krautrock” – Alan Freeman Thirty-three minutes of pure, unadulterated, psychedelic Krautrock courtesy of PYRAMID: an obscure studio project produced by Toby Robinson aka The Mad Twiddler. These sessions were recorded circa 1975-76 in Cologne for the underground Pyramid label, which was operated by Toby and his friend Robin Page (the Fluxus artist). During that time, Toby worked as engineer and assistant at various studios in Cologne, including the famous Dieter Dierks studios, where most of the albums from the Ohr/Pilz/Cosmic Courier catalogue were registered. Having access to the studios during dead hours, Toby recorded lot of sessions just for fun without any commercial interest, featuring friends and musicians who frequented the studios and the underground art/music scene of Cologne. Some of these sessions were later relesed as hand-made vinyl micro pressings on his Pyramid label with help from artist Robin Page. LP $25 SKU:22833

PYRAMID (GERMANY)- MIND MAZE (BLUE) (Zep/Sabbath style 70s acid rock)-Label:MADE OF STONE Pyramid is a band set to remind us there was a time "when music could make a difference", a time when bands like Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin and King Crimson were at the zenith. That's what Pyramid, the instrumental stoner/krautrockers from Nuremberg, are. The album takes listeners to a 40-minute trip in a world full of acid rock touches and stoner, prog rock or grunge influences, spanning from the '70s to the '90s and today. Among them careful listeners can trace bands like Yes and Pink Floyd, Kyuss and Fu Manchu, as well as Colour Haze and Sungrazer. With 'Mind Maze' Pyramid do accomplish a milestone that bands crave for: to build a solid and interesting debut, which is accessible and "fun" through its psych jams and spacey krautrock grooves, while at the same time provides enough hidden musical gems for those willing to listen carefully. Only 500 originals were pressed 400 of which were destroyed in a fire, so remaining originals are very hard to come by and go for the 4 digits in bucks, and still hardly ever pop up. Featuring nice photos and story of the band. CD $10 SKU:21724

NITWITZ - DARK SIDE OF THE SPOON (1978 Stooges/MC5/Ramones style) -Label:GET HIP Founded in 1978, the young band barely caught the dissipating ripples of the first punk rock wave. In taking their lead from groups like the Stooges, MC5, the Ramones and Australia’s Saints, the Nitwitz had little in common with the angry, unwashed masses of English spiky-tops who sang about “the dole,” depression, and gang warfare. (Although they had a definite fondness for a few fast-riffing exceptions like the Lurkers, Drones, and Stiff Little Fingers.) Instead, the 16-year-old Nitwitz waxed poetic about girls they liked, girls they didn’t like, school, their favorite TV cartoon show, and getting beat up by disco kids. CD $10 SKU:22756

NOSFERATU- ST (1970 osbscure Krautrock)Label:OHRWASCHL Amongst the most obscure of Krautrock bands, due to being so early and on an unlikely label. In their early days they were fronted by guitarist/vocalist Michael Winzkowski (who went on to Epsilon), but apart from that, nothing is known of their history, except that winds player Christian Felke also guested later with Epsilon. Nosferatu's sole eponymous album was housed in a sinister bizarre cover, that perfectly captured the dark edge of their music, being an atypical Krautrock fusion betwixt Xhol Caravan, Message and Out Of Focus, hinting at British bands like Gravy Train or Jade Warrior. For 1970, they were pioneers, unusual in how Michael Thierfelder's vocals are often sung across the music, which so often tends to surge out into space, fronted by the dual solo instruments of guitar and sax. “This is the big aggressive sound of today, performed by Nosferatu. The first time, I heard them, they were auditioning together with several other new groups, all managed by the young and ambitious German promoter Peter Hauke. I was so enthusiastic about Nosferatu’s splendid musical ideas and their irresistible drive that I signed them immediately for "Deutsche Vogue" and cut this album a few weeks later. Don't let me describe their music—all self-penned—just listen and enjoy it as much, as Conny (the engineer) and me did, when we recorded this first step into the recording business of the unusually gifted, young German group Nosferatu!”—Tony Henrik CD $10 SKU:21433

NOSTRADAMOS-ST (1972 Greek folk/rock band) Label:WORLD PSYCHEDELIA Only record from short-lived Greek folk/rock band Nostradamos, originally released on Zodiac in 1972. As the booklet text says, “they made one record, being a quiet record, where the beautiful woman’s voice of Despina Glezou makes a transparent impression, in songs which integrate Greek song styles into the elements of American rock and pop music. There are delicate parts, there are groovy parts—but throughout the album there is a wonderful and a standardized impression. The melodies overflow. The wind that blows is an agreeable one. Other than guitar, bass and drums, there is violin and Hammond, the flute and something that sounds like French horn. It seems like pathos, it seems like folk rock, it seems that what we can all like is in all the band’s pop songs. Whatever you like, maybe you don’t stop wanting to hear this strange record. You can hear it now with sufficiently good sound, with the delicate nuance in evidence. It is transmitted.” All perfectly true! Despina Glezou was a former member of the band Poll who had also worked with George Romanos, Socrates (on the rare "Live At Kyttaro" LP), Dionysis Savvopoulos, and Bourboulia; she makes her claim as most important woman in Greek rock history with her work on this record. Brief band history and discography included in a minimal booklet. CD $10 SKU:20398

Psychedelic folk sounds with lots of ACID GUITARS, a bit in the style of Arthur Lee Harper. CD $10 SKU:22025

NURT - COMPLETE RADIO SESSIONS 1972/1974 (first Polish heavy rock band )Label:KAMELEON urt was a band from Poland playing some sort of jazzy prog, though very eclectic in the sense that they seemed to pla whatever came to them. That can be a good thing but could also spell confusion and bewilderment. But! I do feel that they get away with it.

The sound on this album is very raw and though recorded in the studio for radio airplay I get the feeling that this is the way they sounded live and that makes me very interested indeed. The music is very bluesy and quite typical, to some extent, of the early progressive scene that came out of jazz, rock and blues. You won't find many classical ingredients, rather a stripped down and dirty progressive rock, bordering on hardrock.

The two opening tracks are great stuff, especially the second. It's heavy and raw bluesy, progressive rock. The fourth track, Syn strachu, reminds med of Deep Purple bar the organ but holds a surprising trumpet solo, performed in a sort of primitive Miles Davis fashion. Interesting track, which leaves the Purple territory and heads into some sort of ballad and back to the jazzy menace of Davis vs. Purple. Morze ognia is more hardrock, Holograficzne Widmo is progressive and Gato is simply raucious but great.

It is an interesting piece of history, this compilation. It showcases the diversity of Eastern bloc progressive. I like it because of the rawness but also the vision of music as something more than genres and cohesiveness. Interesting but not for everyone. I would rate it three stars but some of the music is worth more. Still, I wo uld never part from it. It attracts me in a primitive, earthy way. CD $14 SKU:19156

TWO TIMING BABY -Ember Sixties Pop: Volume 2, 1961-1962Label:FANTASTIC EMBER In 1960, Jeffrey Kruger launched Ember Records as an independent, one of very few in the UK, where the majors held sway. Straight away, the label set about trying to break into the charts with many fine pop releases. The Ember Sixties Pop series compiles the best of those records. “Two Timing Baby” picks up the story from where Say When: Ember Sixties Pop Volume 1 (FVCD044) left off. Carter, Lewis & The Southerners first Ember single ‘Two Timing Baby’/’Will It Happen To Me’ features Joe Meek engineering, Geoff Goddard on piano, Albert Lee on guitar, Chas Hodges on bass and Bobby Graham on drums. The Meek connection continues with Mark Douglas only single: Joe produced ‘It Matters Not’/’Upside Down’ and Tornado Clem Cattini confirms he drums on both tracks. American songwriters Buddy Kaye and Phil Springer penned many hits, including ‘The Next Time’ for Cliff Richard. They brought several songs to Ember and Grant Tracy was the adaptable vocalist on ‘The Great Matchmaker’/’The Tears Came Rolling Down’ and the follow-up flip ‘Taming Tigers.’ Other beneficiaries of the prolific Kaye and Springer were Johnny Carson (‘Are You Anyone s Girl’/’Teenage Bachelor’ and, again, ‘The Tears Came Rolling Down’) and Sandra Gale (‘Hello Heartache’/’If She s Right For You’) who had been girl singer with the Ray Ellington Quartet, joining Ember when Ellington did. Kruger chose the songs for Lita Roza’s single with the aim of moving her sound towards pop and rock n roll, and she turns in fine performances on ‘Mama (He Treats Your Daughter Mean)’/’(He s My) Dreamboat,’ aided by a driving band led by Tony Crombie. Brooklyn-born Kerry Adams recorded her single in New York, conducted by future soul giant Jerry Ragovoy. The Dale Sisters cute harmonies are evident on their second Ember single, ‘Road To Love’/’Secrets.’ Tommy Sanderson’s second Ember 45 combined trad-jazz ‘Ding Dong Rag’ with groovy ‘Piano A Go Go,’ which would have made a great theme for a TV detective show. Many of these original singles are highly collectable (mint copies of Mark Douglas are valued at £75, Carter, Lewis & The Southerners at £50 and Lita Roza at £30). Subsequent volumes will carry the story through to the end of the sixties, with further sought after tracks included. The series is complemented by compilations devoted to beat and rock from the Ember vaults. Recordings are mastered from tape, where available, and booklets illustrated with sleeve and label shots. Nice shrink-wrapped slip-case packaging. COMP CD $8 SKU:19205

OZ KNOZZ -Ruff Mix( US 70s private press hard rock/prog)Label:OZONE First legit reissue of one of the best US private press hard rock/progressive rock albums of the 1970s. Formed in 1969 in Houston, TX, Oz Knozz's original crew included multi-instrumentalists Jack Alford, Bill Massey and Duane Massey. Alford left the group in 1971 and was replaced by drummer Marty Naul, while the next year the trio was joined by guitarist Richard Heath. The band had also a three-man horn section, which was dropped quite fast, although horns remained a part of the band's sound, even on their rare and epochal 1975 private press debut ''Ruff Mix,” released on the band’s own Ozone label.“Ruff Mix” mainly grooves in Hard Rock territory—the second track 'Peanut Butter Yoni' sounds a bit like Judas Priest with a proto-Metal feeling; but the album also has elements of Progressive Rock, Horn Rock and Pomp Rock. Like most bands of the era, the idea was to throw out a few different styles to see if something would stick… the theory being that a major label would hear the private album by chance and sign said band so they could open for Led Zeppelin or Foghat's next US tour… or something like that. What separates Oz Knozz from others is a strong compositional component, the band have plenty of original ideas and muster superb instrumentation. The guitar work ranges from hard and powerful to melodic and bluesy and is supported by some great keyboard, including awe-inspiring organ and synth waves. The three-part 15-minute 'Doodley Squat’ suite features heavy dual keyboard parts, crunchy guitars and expressive vocals; the result is a terrific Hard Prog track with lot of energy. For many, the standout track is the groovy and infectious horn rocker, which sounds as dated as the movement itself and easily could have been from 1969. High energy and impressive songwriting LP $22 SKU:21411
