MOTOR CITY BLUES- VA - WAREHOUSE FiND ( Recorded live at the Ann Arbor Blues and Jazz Festival in 1973, produced by John Sinclair. ) LAST copies Label:ALIVE Great warehouse find of title previous thought to be out of print, a few copies left. When one thinks of Detroit, the kind of musical styles that immediately come to mind are the soulful sounds of Motown and primal hard rock like the Stooges, the MC5, and Ted Nugent. While most blues artists are forever associated with the South, Detroit has always been a supporter of blues and roots music. On September 8, 1973, the Ann Arbor Blues & Jazz Festival took place at the Otis Spann Memorial Field, and the 1998 release Motor City Blues compiles the day's highlights. Over 73 minutes in length, the disc is jam-packed with great performances, featuring many obscure artists who prove to be just as talented as the renowned blues giants (Muddy Waters, Albert King, etc.). Some of the artists stray from the standard blues format and incorporate funky rock sounds into their blues, such as Eddie Kirkland's hyper-jamfest "Mojo in Her Backbone" and Little Junior's "I Got My Eyes on You," while the rest of the featured performances are more straight-ahead blues. Other highlights include "24 Years" (Bobo Jenkins), "I Call It Love" (Eddie Burns), "Chicago Breakdown" (Dr. Ross), and "Please Mr. Foreman" (Joe L.), among many others. A truly great blues collection. GREG PRATO COMP CD $10 SKU:14952

SONICS- Boom ( 60’s garage ) GATEFOLD - Label:NORTON The Sonics' second album is every bit as explosive and influential as their debut outing, loaded with gritty Northwest rock & roll. Sandwiched in between the abrasive classics of "Cinderella" and "Don't Be Afraid of the Dark" (with the Wailers on backing vocals), the funk sass of "The Hustler" and "Shot Down," the demonic "He's Waitin'," and the sledgehammer, inside-out version of "Louie, Louie" (only three chords to play and they don't even play 'em) are the band's straight-ahead takes on old R&B chestnuts like "Skinny Minnie," "Let the Good Times Roll," "Don't You Just Know It," "Since I Fell for You," "Hitch Hike," and a nice barn-burning version of "Jenny Jenny." Where the Wailers cut down the trees and paved the highway, the Sonics were the first group from their neck of the woods to take that music somewhere wilder than their original inspirations. The second chapter of Northwest rock & roll after you absorb the Wailers' Golden Crest sides. -allmusic.com LP $15 SKU:152

DISHES - Hot Property ( 70s Canadian new wave punk legends ) - Label:REGULAR cardboard pic slv ORIGINAL WAREHOUSE FIND - legendary Canadian early punky new wave ‘78 45 RPM $4 SKU:4916

DRIPPING LIPS ( Damned /FLAMIN GROOVIES/ NICK CAVE- Such a Lot of Stars plus 3 pic slv- Label:NDN James' latest project, The Dripping Lips, features Scottish-born/Belgium-living Robbie Kelman on vocals, Nico Mansy (ex-Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds) on bass, and Paul Zahl (ex-Flamin' Groovies) on drums. The EP's first cut and title track, "Such A Lot Of Stars", is a beautiful and atmospheric, yet catchy song. Though "Such A Lot Of Stars", melodic as hell, still carries the signature Brian James edge, it's a bit of an unchartered territory for Brian, who gets to turn his guitar up louder on the B-side's first track, "Powerful", with its power chord grabbing you firmly by the throat from the very first rotation. It should be noted that the version of "Such A Lot Of Stars" appearing here is radically different, and much preferred by both Brian & Robbie, to the one previously released on the "Ready To Crack?" album.
Alan Lee Shaw (ex-The Damned, ex-The Maniacs, ex-The Physicals, & ex-The Rings), who also worked with Brian on his solo album, plays bass on "Abracadabra"." 45 RPM $3 SKU:15813

SEARCHING IN THE WILDERNESS - VA ( raw, rare mid-'60s rock, UK ) -Label:MUZIEK EXPRESS While this compilation might prove mighty hard to track down, it's one of the better anthologies of raw, rare mid-'60s rock, concentrating exclusively on bands from the U.K. and Europe (i.e., this is not a "garage" compilation in the classic sense). Some of these groups enjoy a cult reputation, especially the Dutch ones (the Outsiders, Q65, Cuby & the Blizzards, the Motions); most will draw blanks even on the faces of specialist record store owners. Still, if you like the R&B/mod of the Pretty Things or the Who and are looking for stuff in that mode that's less polished, this is a good place to land. The Red Squares' "You Can Be My Baby" is as good as the best London 1966 mod; the Buzz's "You're Holding Me Down" is one of British producer Joe Meek's hardest-rocking sessions; Jimmy Page plays a raunchy session guitar lead on Sean Buckley's "Everybody Knows"; and the Outsiders' "Won't You Listen" is one of the wildest, most unhinged beat/punk performances of all time. There's also a rare and basic unreleased mid-'60s song by the Kinks (who are identified as the "Muswell Ravens" on the cover), "All Aboard." “Richie UnterbergeR COMP CD $12 SKU:332

SIMLA BEAT- 70 ( obscure-as-it-gets Indian garage, beat and psych. ) Label:Shadoks Records Particles presents the first of two legendary world-wide compilation rarities, originally released to commemorate the All-India Beat Contest in 1968 by the Simla cigarette company.
- As-obscure-as-it-gets Indian garage, beat and psych.
- Finally back on CD and remastered.
- Includes the original artwork and background notes.
- "The Confusions from Madras cut this amazing original, 'Voice From The Inner Soul.' It has a tough, heavy sound with a rudimentary beat, sharp bluesy guitar fills, and an organ sound right out of 1966. The Dinosaurs, from Bangalore, contribute a fine cover of Creedence Clearwater Revival's 'Sinister Purpose,' giving Fogerty writing credit, somewhat surprisingly given the usual global practice of song appropriation. This one has nice fuzz guitar and gravely vocals. I'd say it surpasses the original." --Garage Hangover COMP CD $9 SKU:13509

Features The Coachwhips, Two Gallants (early recording), Boyskout, Black Cat Music, Hotwires Titans, The Flakes, Big Midnight, etc. "There's a bevy of talent boiling over, captured on this surpringly consistent compilation. The hard-rocking Joan Jett-meets-AC/DC riffage of Nagg opens things with the smug "Beauty of the Bitch." the Coachwhips and Boyskout serve up cool synth-heavy tunes. Big Midnight and Black Cat Music layer Iggy Pop-style confessional rock with ominous layers of guitars and organ. the Holy Kiss sounds desperate and desolate like the finest work of Rowland S. SKABBS - Idle Threat (70s punk ) ltd ed.SAALE - Label:JACKPOT A collection of never before issued recordings from 1977-78 Lawndale, California punks, The Skabbs.. In tandem with the birth of punk, these music obsessed nerds, bored and listless at the end of the 70’s, became disenchanted with the increasingly plastic tendencies of modern music. The Skabbs concocted some truly outsider sounds, melding jagged Devo-esque rhythms with lightning-fast technical touches that predicted the Minutemen by a few years. Sadly, the band was cut short in 1979 when songwriter and frontman, Steven Joseph Salazar dies at just 26 years old from a life-long heart condition. In their grief, The Skabbs choose to disband burying Salazar’s legacy of songs with their sorrow. In retrospect, The Skabbs steadily became a scene unto themselves, making a proto-punk sound guided by a mission to simply make music that sounded less gross than Foreigner. With the exception of being recorded by SST producing genius Spot, The Skabbs were considered too weird for the art crowd and just terrified the hippies. * • First time ever issued. Includes band history and unpublished photos. Vinyl includes full digital download of album. LP $12 SKU:13927

SKY SAXON - Purple Electricity - WAREHOUSE FIND -Label:VOXX/ Water Records From Trouser Press “ in the early '80s, Sky Saxon would climb up unannounced to join every single band of the then-popular garage contingent spearheaded by Greg Shaw's Voxx label and Cavern Club. Originally a kick, it quickly became a drag to the young Beatle-booted hipsters, and a band called Purple Electricity was cooked up as a stake through Sky's hollow heart. Featuring the McDonald brothers from Redd Kross and Primate Brian Corrigan on drums, the intent was to daze and confuse Mr. Saxon, as well as any sycophants still blindly following. Drawing heavily from familiar '70s metal tunes, the blatantly unrehearsed music of the March '86 show documented on Private Party is matched with a disconnected and distracted Sky, recorded in glorious walkmanorama. Just to cap off this travesty, all of the songs — including indisputable covers — are credited to SS Saxon. LP $10 SKU:12249

SMACK - ST ( 60s Creem / Hendrix style ) Hand-numbered limited edition of 500; heavy sleeve; 180 gram pressing, double-sided insert. SAALE - Label:SHADOKS "Smack was recorded in late July and early August 1968 in Lawrence, Kansas USA. The four Smack members were all summer scholarship music and arts students attending Kansas University in Lawrence, Kansas. All music tracks were cut live, only over-dubed lead vocals and background vocals. That year there were some 2800 summer students attending a 6 week summer arts scholarship session - 1800 females and 900 males. Smack was born and played a gig several weeks later and the next thing you know they were all 'stars' of the campus. Someone from the university arranged for them to go in and record an album. An original Smack LP is rare as gold dust. We have only seen 2 copies for sale the past 15 years for massive money. The music is great covers played with extra heavy fuzz guitar, vocals, bass & drums. Those versions of Cream and Hendrix songs are killer. The whole album (very well produced) has a one of a kind psychedelic feel. There are not many cover albums which gives you another perspective on those known songs. This album does for sure." Hand-numbered limited edition of 500; heavy sleeve; 180 gram pressing, double-sided insert. LP $34 SKU:13524

SMOGGERS - Chinese Food - 10-INCH- SAALE Label: Project Infinity 60s garage style from these primitive geniuses. Wheezing fuzz guitars that would be illegal in most countries, thundering drums, reverb imported from the deepest caves in all of Spain and bleeding heart vocals make for one deadly fun record. Recorded 1,000 miles below the earth's surface and produced by Rock n Roll PhD Mike Mariconda. -Joe Emery, The Ugly Beats. LP $5 SKU:13800

SNAKEGRINDER - And the Shredded Fieldmice + 4 Bonus Tracks ( 70s psych ) - 180 gram vinyl in a tip-on gatefold jacket, featuring gig posters and full lyrics - Label:LION "Every burg in the '70s that had a steady supply of weed and electricity undoubtedly provided a birthing ground for the formation of bands influenced by the likes of Jerry Garcia and Lowell George, and the Delaware area was no different. What was different was that our subjects-at-hand got it together and in 1977 released an unassuming document for posterity, containing nothing but original, winding (dare we say "snake-like"?) compositions and good vibes throughout. Since then, the album has garnered accolades from the Acid Archives crowd and so we felt the time was right to give the group's efforts a proper (and properly licensed from the band) presentation, with an "old-style" heavy mini-LP sleeve and thick booklet containing pics, gig posters, song lyrics and liner notes by producer and longtime fan GREGOR ALLIGATOR. In addition, we've added a half-hour of unreleased live tracks from the same era, and everything you hear (album and bonus) was transferred from the mastertapes." LP $22 SKU:15669

SOCIAL CLIMBERS- St SAALE - Label:DRAG CITY "It's almost 1980. Soho, New York is fertile with young, no-wave punks getting sharper and increasingly angular: Branca, DNA, Teenage Jesus, Contortions, Suicide, et al, as well as the groups they would spawn. Coveted and revered bands for many today, this music was peripheral at the time. Unheard by most save for the underbelly, these were artists living free and dirty, trying to outdo each other. Within the periphery of this periphery, Social Climbers made sounds that were of their environs yet remarkably unique, leaving an indelible stamp on the scene while somehow managing to slither undetected out of all the history books. A downtown New York art band as much as any other, Social Climbers also claimed midwestern roots and actual musicianship that many of their contemporaries lacked, and in trade dismissed and essentially protested the snotty pretensions that drove many others within the scene. Social Climbers are an absolute post-punk blueprint: fat bass (often two), guitar, drum machine (dubbed "the monkey"), feverish vocals, and organ. Their lone, self-titled album is agitated and impossibly wild, yet danceable and composed. Gulcher Records initially released the album as a triple 7". Their record was barely picked up by the local underground rock distributor, as is common in a crowded scene, and the group disbanded in 1982. Their one artifact is as earnest as it is fractured and terrifying. And it's here, again, sounding as relevant today as it did when it was of the moment; perhaps, even more so. LP $12 SKU:13377

SOLEDAD BROTHERS - The Hardest Walk PURPLE -Label:ALIVE PURPLE VINYL, Ltd. edition. At their best, Soledad Brothers recall the Rolling Stones when Mick and Keith were fresh-faced bluesheads in the mid-Sixties: The prolific Detroit foursome kicks out solid, harmonica-laced blues riffs without sounding derivative or cheesily nostalgic.
