UGLY THINGS- 53 -DEAD BOYS- Once again we’ve dug deep to bring you some truly eye-opening stories and interviews. At last the story of the Groupies of “Primitive” infamy is unveiled by Jeff Jarema and it’s as depraved and comical as you could wish for. We’re also thrilled to present Ned Hayden’s revelatory, no-holds-barred interview with Johnny Blitz of the Dead Boys and Rocket From The Tombs. Then there’s Jonathan Paley’s career-spanning conversation with Steve Cataldo taking in his psychedelic days with the Front Page Review, Saint Steven, as well as Boston ‘70s punk renegades the Nervous Eaters. Skip Spence’s wilderness years are explored, along with the tragic life of original LOVE drummer Don Conca (immortalized in their song “Signed DC), NYC garage outfit the Outsiders (“The Guy With the Long Liverpool Hair”), Hungarian beat combo Atlas, and Seattle garage rockers the Time Machine. Also, Wally Bryson talks Raspberries, Bill Furbee unpacks the history of the song “Train Kept A-Rollin’,” and Cyril Jordan pays fond tribute to his recently departed friend Roy Loney. And of course our comprehensive review sections covering the latest reissues and rock-related books. BOOKS & MAGS $11 SKU:22865

MORNING DEW - No More (60s Kansas psych)Label:CICADELIC RECORDS Along with The Blue Things, The Morning Dew were one of Kansas' finest psychedelic bands of the '60s. This CD presents over one hour of their recordings- the 1966 Audio House session, all the singles (with bonus alternate versions), the 1968 Fairyland sessions (including newly discovered psychedaelic stereo version with special effects-headphone use suggested). An in-depth booklet with a cache of photos, radio surveys, and posters, traces the genesis of an instrumental group called The Impax in 1963 to The Morning Dew in 1966. By 1968, The Morning Dew forged a complex psychedelic sound the culminated with their famed Fairyland summer '68 sessions. This release is the first of two covering the history of the band. The second release will contain their much sought after 1970 Roulette album, known as At Last with alternate versions, plus their unreleased second album." CD $14 SKU:23588

MOTHERS ANGER-ST -(SEATTLE PSYCH) PROD BY MICHAEL DAVIS MC5-Label:DIONYSUS The Mother's Anger is a two-piece psychedelic punk band from Seattle, WA that incorporates Middle-Eastern melodies and Drum n' Bass rhythms into a heavy, danceable, dream-like adventure
The Mothers Anger is a two-piece band from Israel that sounds like a five piece band from Detroit. Could this be because the debut full length by Drummer/Vocalist Jimi and Guitarist/Vocalist Stitch was produced by bassist Michael Davis of legendary Detroit rockers The MC5? You read that right, a two piece band in which the guitarist tunes a few strings to play the bass and guitar parts simultaneously, enters the studio with a producer who happens to be a famous bass player (and also plays on a track!). CD $3 SKU:19778

MOUNT CARMEL - GET PURE Digipack (for Radio Moscow fans! ) - Label:ALIVE Amid the current industry of cool, Mount Carmel’s lack of gimmick is a welcome anachronism. The trio’s third album “Get Pure” is full of swagger, packed with great songs and inspired performances. This is true rock music like you haven’t heard in years. Crank it up!
Mount Carmel reeks of surging guitar riffs and thunderous backbeats. They’re a power trio in the truest sense of the term and certainly nowhere near as anonymous as their cover art would have you believe. As you may have guessed, this is an album for the heavy blues guitar freaks. – 194 CD $10 SKU:15855

MOUNT MCKINLEYS - PORTRAIT OF A MINDBENDER Spacey psych garage)Label:GET HIP Recorded at Easley Studios in Memphis, they’ve broadened their basic garage sound a bit to include theremin, organ and a horn section. The band’s new, more eclectic sound does little to diminish their garage attack, as their fierce cover of the Count Five’s “Peace of Mind” will attest. Mix several stunning originals like “Think Twice” and “Outside In” with horn-driven instrumentals and some spacey psychedelic sounds and you have Stacked Up (And Get It!). CD $10 SKU:22182

MOUNTAIN -Canadian Festival Express 1970 LAST COPIES!-Label:VOICEPRINT Scorching live recording by Leslie West's legendary band of rockers, recorded at the Canadian Festival Express in 1970. The tenth volume in the Mountain Bootleg Series was recorded on their Canadian Festival Express tour in 1971. As with all the other volumes in the series, all of the recordings come from Leslie West and Corky Laing's personal archives. Some of the performances are not sonically perfect, but the quality of the performances are never in question. When 1970 began, New York hard rockers Mountain were one of the most promising new bands. Their 1969 debut (while the album was titled “Mountain,” it was credited solely to Leslie West) had led to a highly coveted spot in the original Woodstock festival, thrusting the band was into the spotlight. By the year's end, due to their exceptional sophomore effort, “Climbing,” Mountain were one of the US's premier rock outfits CD $10 SKU:19503

MOUNTAIN -Crossroader: An Anthology 1970-1974 - DBL CDLabel:ESOTERIC Formed in 1969 by guitarist Leslie West and bass player and Cream producer Felix Pappalardi, Mountain also initially comprised a line-up that featured Steve Knight (Keyboards) and N.D. Smart (Drums). Prior to securing a recording contract, the band made an impressive impact at the Woodstock Festival in August of that year. Soon after this appearance N.D. Smart was replaced on drums by Corky Laing and Mountain began their recording career with their debut album CLIMBIN , issued in March 1970. Featuring such classic tracks as 'Mississippi Queen,' 'For Yasgur’s Farm' and a cover of Jack Bruce’s 'Theme from an 'Imaginary Western,’ Mountain established their hallmark sound of powerful rock combined with a more subtle side. CD One Mountain In The Studio; CD Two Mountain Live In Concert CD $12 SKU:21293

Their classic "Sundance" LP from 1971 plus unreleased live and studio material off the Master Tapes from this Chicago band- A total of 13 songs and 70 minutes of music. Don't bother with the French bootleg, the original pressing was poorly done and nothing the piraters did have helped the quality!! CD $10 SKU:18654

MOURNING DAYZE- LOST RECORDINGS (1967 Wisconsin psych) -Label:GEAR FAB This Wisconsin band appeared on "Psychedelic states Illinois" with their swirling psychedelic track "Fly my paper plane". MUSTANGS - And That’s for Sure- Riverside 60s garage legends Label:UGLY THINGS Full-color 16-page booklet packed with rare photos of the band, plus full liner notes by Mike Stax ) Two minutes and five seconds of tough fuzz, stomp and bad attitude, the Mustangs' 1965 single "That's For Sure" is considered one of the Holy Grails of '60s garage rock. That one, hopelessly rare 45 would be their only release. However, in January 1966 the Mustangs went into Locy Sound in Riverside, California, where they recorded 14 more songs, demonstrating not only their dynamism and versatility as a live cover band, but also their remarkable talent for original material, from wailing rockers to haunting Beatlesque ballads. Those tracks are presented here for the first time, along with "That's For Sure" and its grooving instrumental flipside "Nova Blues." This CD only release includes a full-color 16-page booklet packed with rare photos of the band, plus full liner notes by Mike Stax. CD $8 SKU:23590

MYSTIC EYES-OUR TIME TO LEAVE! (primal ‘60s garage rock sound.)Label:GET HIP 4 bonus tracks. If ever there was a band that could do justice to a ‘60s folk-rock chestnuts like “Clam Me Down,” it’s the Mystic Eyes. And on this LP, they prove it yet again. “Clam Me Down” is not only faithful to the original in form and delivery, but also recreates the feel of the primal ‘60s garage rock sound. But as good as their take on the Human Expression hit is, it doesn’t compare to the absolutely breathtaking originals that they churn out on this LP. 14 songs in all including a couple choice covers. CD $10 SKU:21822

MYSTIC EYES-Whole World is Watching (primal ‘60s garage rock sound.)Label:GET HIP While each song on Watching is a polished gem, special mention must be given to a few. “Reality Is No Friend of Mine” is an ominous psychedelic pounder, and “So Far Away From Here” is only slightly less intense. While the whole album fits loosely into a modernized folk/rock genre, “I Can’t Wait to Love You” pays loving tribute to the Phil Spector/Jan & Dean sound. CD $10 SKU:22755

PSYCHEDELIC UNDERGROUND- VOL 14 ( 70s psych prog )SAALE -Label:Garden of Delights Still plenty of greatness to unearth in the Psychedelic Underground -- just the sort of tripped-out grooves we've really come to love from this well-priced series! Some of the work here is as heavy on jazzy elements as it is psychedelic ones -- making for a great blend that's a bit more organic at times than you might expect -- a world-ranging approach to the styles that really keeps things interesting, and which nicely breaks past simple cliches of psychedelia. Plus, many of the tracks are of European origin, and from the 70s -- and they've got key proggish elements as well, especially on some of the jazzier numbers. Titles include "Summer 79" by Gravestone, "Arctic Ocean" by Pancake, "Back On My Hill" by Faithful Breath, "Ala Dalona" by Emma Myldenberger, "Question" by Joy Unlimited, "Bolero" by Aqua, and "Where Is Your Home Town COMP CD $6 SKU:23134

1965-1975, the so-called "Golden Music" period in the south of

fusion of Vietnamese music with western pop culture. Included

SUMMER TURNS TO AUTUMN - Ember Rock, Vol. 2 (RARE 60S PSYCH& PROG)-Label:FANTASTIC VOYAGE British indie label Ember released a number of rock albums and singles between 1969 and 1972, which today are much sought after by collectors of psychedelic, progressive and folk rock sounds. Many of the best tracks from these are gathered on “Summer Turns To Autumn”. Foremost among the artists compiled here is progressive rock band Blonde On Blonde, represented by tracks from both of their Ember albums. Fantastic Voyage has salvaged two tracks from Blue Beard s album. An early songwriting/production project for Bob Welch, who next surfaced in Fleetwood Mac, the album was only released in Italy, but the single ‘Sly Willy’ was more widely available and is highly prized by collectors of funky rock. Tyrannosaurus Rex-style acoustic hippy duo Knocker Jungle and progressive folk group 9.30 Fly each managed one now highly collectable long player for the label. The remainder of the material ranges from the fuzzy psychedelic rock of Canadians The Dorians and the melodic folk rock of Paddy Maguire, backed by heavy friends Steve Winwood and Jerry Donahue (of Fotheringay), to the soul-rock fusion of Milt Matthews Inc, here interpreting a Blind Faith song, and a previously unissued folk rock rendition of ‘East Virginia’ by Polly Niles. “Summer Turns To Autumn” complement Fantastic Voyage’s existing, highly popular compilations of Ember Beat and Ember Pop, with no duplication of tracks. Nice shrink-wrapped slip-case packaging. COMP CD $10 SKU:19046

WARFARING STRANGERS-:ACID NIGHTMARES-PURPLE VINYL GATEFOLD DOUBLE Label:NUMERO UNO On neon purple vinyl. As the hippie movement hurtled towards its imminent demise, bad vibes infiltrated the rock world. Tainted LSD, loud motorcycles, and a series of brutal deaths spawned inspiration for guitar-wielding teenagers across the globe. Implementing deafening fuzz and satanic screams to create their proto-metal monstrosities, short-lived stoner bands pressed their lysergic experiments in microscopic quantities before blacking out entirely. Lifted from the ashes of the acid rock hell fire are 18 distorted tales of dope fiends, pill poppers, and the baddest of trips. This deluxe 2LP comes housed in a blacklight poster-style jacket illustrated by Benjamin Marra, replete with flocking and lysergic neon. 24 pages documenting the creeping existential dread of the hard rock underground are tucked into the gatefold pocket alongside two dead dinosaur-heavy LPs. COMP LP $35 SKU:23261

LONESOME SHACK - City Man(Great boogie blues groove)Label:KNICK KNACK On the surface, it's easy to burrow into City Man and imagine it was recorded in some Mississippi juke joint a long, long time ago (accentuated by the fact that Todd pushes both his guitar and the vocal through the same little amp). But when you put an ear to what's really going on, you start hearing all the subtle-but-wild-ass stuff Garrard's doing - or the cool how-did-he-do-that riffs Todd pulls, tugs, and flecks out of his Tiesco's strings or Bergman's not-what-you-would've-expected-was-going-to-happen approach to blues bass. And therein lies the secret to Lonesome Shack: you can have a happy, casual hangout with City Man and have a good time or you can dig into the thing as deeply as you like and find a treasure trove of mind-blowing grooves that go somewhere beyond the traditional. --Brian Robbins,, January 1, LP $16 SKU:21850

Led by local legend Bootsey X, a.k.a. Robert Mulrooney (ex Ramrods), the Detroit band cranks it up, puts it into drive and rocks - hard.” - L. Anderson / CMJ LP $10 SKU:23593

MARK PORKCHOP HOLDER -Let It Slide (blistering boogie blues ) LTD ED OF 150 STARBURST LP -Label:ALIVE Guitarist, singer, harmonica player, and songwriter MARK PORKCHOP HOLDER is a founding member of the seminal Tennessee punk rock blues band The Black Diamond Heavies (with John Wesley Myers aka James Leg, and Van Campbell of the band King Mud).MARK PORKCHOP HOLDER plays the blues, and his music is the sound of the truth. He has traveled around the world and the US, and played at festivals, clubs, in the streets, at churches, in public toilets, army surplus stores, and in a mental hospital or two. After more than a decade of struggling with depression and addiction, he has finally come back home, in Chattanooga TN, and assembled a first rate power trio. His debut “Let It Slide” is a blistering blues album that marries both the modern and the traditional. “Let It Slide” has been described by the Chattanooga Pulse as “Boogie, sans bullshit. Dirty roadhouse music. Juke Joint jamming. Swamp rock. Too rock for blues, too blues for rock, the music is hungry, hard and mean." LP $20 SKU:17716

MESSER CHUPS -Crazy Price(surf/rockabilly)Label:TRASH WAX irst time on vinyl. Brilliant retro release of 'Crazy Price', remastered for vinyl by Oleg himself and includes the amazingly wigged out 'Fantomasophobia'. 14 tracks of mind bending instro madness. '3 Minutes To Massacre' is a play on Lee Hazlewood and Duane Eddy's 'Girl On Death Row'. 'Ghost Rider To West' is a tremolo heavy rocker with a rather speedy double bass break! 'Satan Jeans' is a straight up lift of 'Radioactive Kid'... but not as you know it! The usual eclectic mix of surf, rockabilly, jazz beats, B-movie samples, lounge and and a pretty warped mind putting them altogether. Originally released on CD only in 2003 by Solnze. LP $22 SKU:22677

METABOLISME -Tempus Fugit ( 1977 French prog )SAALE!-Label:REPLICA (France): First inspired by hard-rock as played by Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple and Black Sabbath, the band then discovered the works of Uriah Heep. With the help of keyboards player Thierry Scaduto, a symphonic touch added a nice aspect to the music. Under the influence of Genesis, Yes and Premiata Forneria Marconi, Metabolisme changed its musical style to play Progressive rock. Signed to RCA's Crypto sub-label, Metabolisme were great at dark atmospheres, processed fuzzy guitars and lost vocals. When they burst out of a slow number and rip into a tight ensemble piece you might hear touches of Arachnoid. The spacey Pink Floyd atmosphere recalls Pulsar, especially at the time of "Pollen" . The album opens with the longest track, nearly 16 minutes of pure delight, featuring two lush keybords passages and great guitar chops. One instrumental track, 'Tempus,' shows that they were capable to creat great prog rock, with captivating guitar keyboard parts. Released as late as 1977, the album didn't stand a chance of making it to a larger audience in a time in which punk rock started its devastating heyday. The music offered on the album was far to fine- drawn for the period in which it was released. Still, Metabolisme's "Tempus Fugit," their one and only album, is a treasure for those who love lush organs in the style of Yes, sophisticated guitars Uriah Heep and French vocals a la Mona Lisa. Is that you? then you need to buy this record. LP $24 SKU:21016

METAPHYSICAL ANIMATION-ST SAALE! (ultra obscure Floridan psych/prog 1973
) DBL Label:BLACK WIDOW Reissue of an ultra obscure Floridan psych/prog album from 1973. Less than 50 copies were pressed at the time, housed in a plain white demo sleeve with the band name hand-written in pen on the cover. Classic '70s prog, with significant elements of fusion and psychedelic rock. Sometimes it sounds like a take on 'Close To The Edge'. Other times it sounds like Rick Wakeman briefly joined Pink Floyd during the 'Wish You Were Here' sessions. And then there are the tracks that sound like a looser, more electrified Graham Bond Organization. LP $25 SKU:21510

MONDO DRAG - New Rituals - PINK VINYL!(STONER PSYCH discovered by Parker of Radio Moscow) Label:ALIVE Trip out with Mondo Drag! From deep in the cosmos of Iowa, this psychedelic outfit has created a strange brew of garage, psych, space, sludge and stoner rock. "New Rituals," their debut for Alive, is an incursion into extended psychedelic blues guitar jams and haunting vocals over heavy, steady bass lines and thumping percussion. Mondo Drag has shared the stage with bands such as Witchcraft, Dead Meadow, Pentagram, and Radio Moscow, to name just a few. "They rock. Most songs clock in at over 6 minutes, yet you don't notice the time go by because they seem to take that long just to rev up. Each song stretches, cries, screams, and tears itself apart." - Berkeley Place LP $18 SKU:21266

NERVES One Way Ticket (70S POWERPOP LEGENDS!) STARBURST VINYL Label:ALIVE Formed in 1975 by guitarist JACK LEE, bassist PETER CASE, and drummer PAUL COLLINS, the Nerves are one of the most influential garage/punk pop outfits to come out of the mid-70's LA scene, and certainly one of the least documented... until now. Mostly remembered for their classic "Hanging On The Telephone," a Jack Lee composition which has been covered over the years by a myriad of artists from BLONDIE to L7 to CAT POWER, the Nerves were above all a high energy rock'n'roll band with all three members composing and singing. Playing fast, ear-catching garage pop songs, sometimes wearing matching suits, the trio had more than a bit of the stripped down street energy of the Los Angeles's early punk movement. They shared the stage with the Ramones and Mink Deville during their infamous US "Magical Blistering Tour," played the Punk Palace and the legendary Masque in Hollywood, and headlined shows with the Avengers, the Zeros, The Dils, The Screamers and Shock, to name just a few. After the band's break-up in 1978, Peter Case and Paul Collins formed The BREAKAWAYS, and later went on to front the legendary PLIMSOULS and The BEAT, respectively. Following the success of "Hanging On the Telephone," JACK LEE has mostly focused on his songwriting career, releasing an album in 1981. Both Peter and Paul are still recording and touring. PETER CASE's latest album "Let Us Now Praise Sleepy John" (Yeproc 2007) was nominated for a Grammy. This collection, authorized for the first time ever by the three band members, features their 1976 EP (now regarded as a power pop classic), as well as demos and previously unreleased live recordings, REMASTERED and complete with notes and photos. MACKAY,DUNCAN -Chimera (1974 epic keyboard Prog rock) SAALE! Label:MISSING VINYL Limited edition, gatefold, deluxe 180g vinyl, from the original analogue master tapes, exact reproduction of the original first pressing. First time reissue of this 1974 debut album by ex Cockney Rebell/10CC keyboard player (he also played with Kate Bush and Camel), Duncan Mackay. It’s an epic prog rock album in the vein of Rick Wakeman, ELP and Patrick Moraz and is highly recommended for keyboard driven prog rock fans. Remember those heady days of the early 70’s, when a trio of keyboard wizards—Keith Emerson (ELP), Rick Wakeman (Yes) and Jon Lord (Deep Purple)—were winning all the polls and dominating the album sales? Duncan Mackay's “Chimera,” recorded in 1973/4 and forever forgotten by all but the most devout, is a brilliant slice of 70s progressive keyboard-based rock. All three of the wizards mentioned above are obvious influences, but McKay clearly stamps his own sound onto this three-track album. (only three tracks? well this was 1974, the era of 'Tales From Topographic Oceans' by Yes).” label says: “Chimera is Duncan MacKay's first album. It is considered to be a milestone in keyboard driven 70s progressive rock music. Chimera was originally released on the South African VERTIGO label in early 1974. Original copies are very sought after by collectors and are among the rarest and most expensive ones of the VERTIGO SWIRL/SPACESHIP label worldwide. After this album, Duncan MacKay moved to the UK and became famous for his participation in Baker Gurvitz Army, Colosseum II, Cockney Rebel, Camel, Budgie, Alan Parsons Project and even the first 3 Kate Bush albums.
