AGAPE -The Problem Is Sin: Live And Unreleased (1973 blazing acid jam but with Jesus!)-Label:HIDDEN VISION Collection of rare material, much of it only previously available on an extremely rare promo-only 8-track tape (!) from one of the first hard rock Jesus music bands, formed around the talent of Fred Caban during the early stages of what became known as the Jesus People movement. Most of it is live from 1973, the stand-outs being a blazing acid jam versions of ‘Wouldn’t it Be a Drag’ and ‘Change of Heart’, live at Mount San Antonio College in Walnut, CA. Upon graduating from high school in the spring of 1968, Hendrix-influenced guitarist Fred Caban and his bandmates squeezed into a small Volkswagen van in search of venues to perform. One night, at Huntington Beach's Lightclub, they met a group of enthusiastic teenagers whom Caban described as being "totally immersed with the message of Christ." Though not totally understanding the "Lightclubber's” message, Caban began praying for an introduction to "whomever was out there." When he returned to the van he shared his experience and found that fellow bandmate Jeff Newman had also undergone a spiritual conversion. Caban formed another band naming it Agape, the Greek word for God's love. Having established himself as a guitarist of some merit, the band capitalized on his name to gather crowds. Agape's vision became evangelistic–desiring to share their experience with their peers. "We'd play one or two songs, we'd jam, we'd blow them away and then boom, we'd start preaching..... and people would actually stick around and listen." Within six months a group of fifty young converts had joined the trio as a loose amalgamation of spiritually searching teenagers who gathered together for Bible studies and strategy sessions to promote the band's concerts. AKA-CRAZY JOE(Indonesian '70s heavy psych rock)Label:GRANADILLA MUSIC A CD-reissue of the third LP from the leading Indonesian '70s rockband. Compared to their previous output this '72 collection there are some new and surprising changes of direction. These are showcased by the powerful funk rock of the opening title track, the dirty garage beat of 'Skip Away' and 'Raja Jalan', and various up tempo soul-pop tunes. And, of course, we also hear moments of Indo balladry and tinges of soft rock. Fans of exotic pop à la Baris Manco, soft rock in the vein of late '60s-mid '70s Hollies and the emotional Eastern German pop/rock of Karat and Die Puhdys will love this utterly beautiful record. ALVARO LOPEZ y Sus Grandes Del Twist- DINAMO TWIST - 1962 MEXICO -MINI LP SLV Label:VAM Dinamo Twist is an incessantly grooving and energetic album from drummer Álvaro López y Sus Grandes Del Twist from 1962. It's also loads of fun! From the back cover of the original record we learn that Álvaro was something of a musical prodigy, starting on the drums at a very early age and playing in jazz combos by the time he was 17. Not sure how old he is on this album, but he looks about 12 in the photo on the back! The album's notes also tell us that when he heard the twist he loved it so much that he decided to make his own group play in that style. Much of the set is instrumental with a handful of vocal numbers as well. It's all very upbeat, direct dance music -- the twist with a Latino touch -- with the driving drums of Álvaro up front in the mix and supported melodically by punchy horns. This is such seriously groovy stuff, it's a shame there aren't more recordings from this group! Includes a fantastic cover of Henry Mancini's "Peter Gun" plus "Dynamo," "El Gallo," "Ya me voy," "Lo mejor," "Siboney," which sounds remarkably like "One Step Beyond" by Prince Buster/Madness, "La Adelita," "Otro tequila," "Muchachos grandes," and more. UGLY THINGS- #42 SUMMER 2016: YARDBIRDS / WEIRDOS : Two fantastic bands take pride of place of place on the cover this issue. The Yardbirds, one of the most innovative groups of the ‘60s, are re-examined via a fascinating interview with Paul Samwell-Smith, the band’s bass player, musical arranger, and one of their key songwriters. A BOLHA- Um Passo a Frente (60s Brazilian Psych ) -Label:LION Brazilian band the Bubbles became the toast of the underground Rio de Janeiro scene, backing Tropicalist singer Gal Costas residence at the Sucata night club in 1970. They won the Best Band of the Festival award at the VII FIC of 1971 (International Festival of Songs), the same year they appeared on Lenos Vida y obra de Johnny McCartney album. After venturing to England to attend the Isle of Wight Festival, they decided to experiment with a heavier sound, more akin to UK bands of that era (Deep Purple, Cream, King Crimson, Humble Pie, with a little Beatles White Album in for good measure) than that of their Brazilian cohorts. A name change to A Bolha later, still loaded with verve and swagger, fueled by drugs, they recorded their first album, which has secured a permanent place as one of the best hard psych rock albums to ever emerge from South America. The LP, Um Passo a frente (A step forward), was released in 1973 by the Continental label, in a gatefold cover which was quite luxurious for the era. This masterpiece, now impossibly hard to find as an original, certainly made a name for A Bolha in the pantheon of 1970s Brazilian rock. But success in the early 1970s was not like it had once been in the old Jovem Guarda or Tropicalist days, when bands had weekly TV shows to help them become well-known nationwide‹and eventually, worldwide. In other words, the meager abilities of Continental to promote the album made it a collectors item, not the fate a band would actively seek for their recordings. Luckily, we at Lion Productions are able to present these recordings to the world all over again, with the additional benefit of a 20-page booklet with band history, photos, and comments on the songs by band leader Renato Ledeira. Includes both sides of the bands infamous hard-rocking 1971 single as bonus tracks. CD $10 SKU:10607

ABSTRACTS - Hey Let’s Go Now (60s Brit invasion style) - Label:BREAKAWAY They were one of the first bands to utilize a light show and besides their sole 45, their legacy contains a cache of unreleased period recordings, some of them made for Columbia Records in 1964. Finally, over four decades later, this album collects the band’s entire studio material alongside two excellent sounding 1966 live tracks. An in-depth insert with a wealth of never-before-seen-photos traces the history of the band that brought “Abstractmania” to the New York area in the sixties. It’s a pleasure for Break-A-Way Records to celebrate the return of The Abstracts and hear them shout again, “Hey, Let´s Go Now”… TRACKLISTINGS ON SITE CD $10 SKU:19669

ABUELO , MIGUEL & NADA - ST (70s Argentine psych prog )-Label:CONDOR’S CAVE Recorded in 1974 in France, the album that is the bulk of this reissue has long been regarded as one of the finest recorded by any Argentine artist of the era. With a voice sounding like a cross between Tim Buckley and Peter Hammill, Abuelo became a big star in his native land, recording several rare psyched-out singles in the late sixties, with bells, treated vocals, strange edits, lots of phasing etc., included here as bonus tracks. But thanks to his fickle temper, there was no LP from Abuelo during that time—the album would only emerge years later, after a sojourn in Ibiza, and a bit of wandering throughout Europe. For the actual LP, Abuelo received superb support from Nada, who provided excellent musicianship throughout: the tracks are alternately progressive and very psychedelic (described by some as a cross between Led Zeppelin and Van der Graaf Generator), intense and gloomy. Sadly, Abuelo died of AIDS in 1988, which has diminished the importance of his legacy CD $16 SKU:20203

AGUATURBIA- S/T COMPLETE TRACKS (1969 fuzz psych from South America) Label:REcord Runner Complete Tracks": all tracks from both albums ("S/T" from 1969 and "Volume 2" from 1970), by one of the best and most important psychedelic bands to emerge from South America in the late 60's/early 70's; very heavy fuzz guitar driven rock with fantastic female vocals (inviting the inevitable comparison to Jefferson Airplane) and English lyrics; impossible to indicate how revolutionary they were-but the fact that the band were naked on their debut, and crucified their singer on the cover of their second album may give you an idea; the addition of three bonus tracks from 1973 makes this the essential issue of the band's work; booklet comes with notes and photos from the band's archive. CD $15 SKU:2654

AKA-DO WHAT YOU LIKE (Indonesian '70s heavy psych rock)Label:GRANADILLA MUSIC AKA might have been one of the top acts of the Indonesian rock scene in the late '60s and early '70s. It does not necessarily mean that any international audience for heavy rock and psychedelic sounds would have noticed that back then but we change that now. 'Do What You Like' is a colorful album with a diversity of moods. Of course you find hard driving, wild grooving rock with simmering guitars and pumping rhythms. Go to the next song and some gentle, nearly ethereal dreamy psyche pop will alter your mind. Another step ahead on the tracklist and some easy and melodic 60s beat makes you want to dance the night away. The special factor of this album is the musical flavor of Indonesian pop that all of the songs sung in their native tongue show, while the few English tracks can compete against all of the popular hits from those days from American or European acts. AKA know how to heat you up with their psychedelic sound explosions and eruptive beats. They also know how to calm you down again and lay your soul to rest in a flow of gentle harmonies. Fans of 60s power pop with a regional feel presented by bands such as OMEGA from Hungary and of the 60s US west coast psyche and pop scene will go crazy about this record CD $12 SKU:20862

AKBAYRAM, EDIP -DOSTLAR- NEDIR NE DEGILDIR? (70s Turkish fuzz) Label:WORLD PSYCHEDELIA (Korea) Remastered sound, booklet with photos and liner notes by Angela Sawyer (Weirdo Records). As Turkey's political factions turned more aand more violent in the late 1970s, Buscemi-eyed Edip Akbayram was nearly beaten up by rioting audiences for daring to sing about rural points of view that were naturally critical of Istanbul's political leaders. This second album of Anatolian psychedelia, originally released in 1977, showed defiance even in its gatefold art, with a drawing of the band members seeming to grow straight out the ground, covered in plant tendrils. Akbayram poached members of Mogollar and Baris Mano's Kurtalan Ekspres to get the best fuzz breaks and hammond slams & put 'em straight in your ears. The band also tried out some mixes that pushed the vocals or a particular instrument way up front, and of course long, low, reverberant welcomes from Edip's echo-covered voice. CD $12 SKU:20586

AKKOR, Kamuran - ST (Turkish freakout 71-75) -Label:PHARAWAY SOUNDS Turkey's recent musical history is littered with bottled blondes who put on a lot of eyeliner, made a few singles & then disappeared. And since the mid-1970s, those twin queens Ajda Pekkan and Sezen Aksu have maintained a semi-rivalry while bulldozing their way over pop charts & sales counters. Piles of Turkish psych & folk reissues have hit the west over the past few years, and yet how many have given the luscious ladies of Anatolia their due? So go beyond Selda, and get your gal power on. It's time to steam up your windows with this foxy arabesque singer who's a real-life Stevie Nicks next-door.Waka waka funk rhythm guitar, sweet little organs, pumping bass, winging & buzzy synths, electric baglama, syrupy disco strings, and Akkor's little swallowed yodels... It's all here on Istanbul Plak singles released from 1971-75.
Whether she's covering European hits that have Turkish lyrics retrofitted, or ghost voicing a musical scene in a high-profile movie, Akkor often sings like outbursts of tears or frenzy are just beyond her words. And seeing how she always played second fiddle to her classier, more famous sister Gönül, maybe Kâmuran just felt like a little drama was in order, mmm? You might have caught a couple of scant cuts on compilations like "Turkish Freakout Vol. 2" or "Istanbul 70", but there's way more to discover, and now you can. CD $14 SKU:21144

ALEX- ST PLUS THATS THE DEAL (1976 TURK ROCK)Label:GERMANOFON His first two LP's from 1974 and 1976 on one CD, complete and with all original jacket artwork and lyrics. Now performs as Alex Oriental Experience. "A singer and multi instrumentalist from Cologne who released several albums which were strongly influenced by the ethnic music of Turkey. His first two albums are now eagerly hunted by collectors, as they featured a unique style of 'Turk-Rock' with stunning baglama solos (this is a kind of three-stringed Turkish guitar)! They were recorded with the help of Holger Czukay and Jaki Liebezeit (possibly adding bass and drums on certain tracks?) at Can's Inner Space studio, so take note all you Can collectors!" (Cosmic Dreams At Play) and from elsewhere: “Magnificent Kraut meets Oriental albums by one of the considered pioneers of the genre. Members of Can participated in these first two records (including Jaki Liebezeit, Helmut Hattler, Horst Stachelhaus, and others). These two first records of Alex Wiska came with simply his name, Alex, and are very oriental/Turkish rock oriented. His later records under the name Alex Oriental Experience are much more space rock/kraut oriented. Many comparisons were made with the Turkish band Cem Karaca. Great saz tunes by Alex and good accompanied by some of the brightest names of German rock scene. Highly recommended... not to be missed!” CD $8 SKU:19034

ALEXANDRIA,LOREZ -For Swingers Only (1963 soul drenched) -Label:DUSTY GROOVE Darkly brilliant vocals from the legendary Lorez Alexandria, heard here in a rare small combo session recorded in 1963 for Chess Records. Although the group is a small one, they make this album one of the boldest, most soul-drenched albums Alexandria ever cut. The title really gets it right, as there’s a subtle swing to most of the tunes, even the ballads, and a way of hitting the rhythms that’s quite different than on the average jazz vocal album—it truly highlights the genius of Alexandria’s sound. Instrumentation includes flute and tenor sax, plus piano from John Young; nice use of guitar which really helps further the grooviness of the set. CD $10 SKU:20744

ALL TOMORROW’s PARTY - Yoo Doo Right, Yoo Doo Slide (great JAPANESE Hendrix style guitar) -Label:ALIVE A modern acid-gobbling mélange of Hendrixian guitar, sonorous bass and hissingmaracas, performed by a Japanese space-rock trio with musical roots in the ’60s and '70s. “Music this passionate and memorable comes around but
rarely, I suggest you grab a slice of the cake and have yourself a real
good time.” - Terrascope. “Dark, psychedelic, and always passionate.” – The Sentimentalist CD $5 SKU:4201

ALLAN DAVIE AND THE ARROWS - Arrow Dynamic Sounds ( Surf/Fuzz ) -Label:TOTAL ENERGY Starting in the '60s as a surf group, Davie Allan & the Arrows took instrumental
music a step further, hot-wiring their sound with the abuse of fuzz pedal. "Talking about pop culture, baby? Allan was an architect, a natural fact rock & roll artist. Allan's ax rocks, stalks and talks with heat, assurance and (believe it or not) a maturity that transforms the oft-shallow rock-instro into epic-scale slabs of rock & roll expression. Dazzling." - L.A. Weekly CD $5 SKU:2233

ALLAN DAVIE AND THE ARROWS - Live Run (lthe boss hogs of biker flick soundtracks)-Label:TOTAL ENERGY Rolling Stone: "...the boss hogs of biker flick soundtracks..." Gearhead:"Davie Allan is a superstar..." Flipside: High priest of the fuzz guitar! CD $5 SKU:2232

ALLEN, GREG - Happiness is the on the Way (NEW YORK DOLLS) Label:KUDOS Greg Allen's Fringe Religion is a Boston-based band that formed in 2013 - but they are hardly beginners when it comes to rock and roll. Singer, guitar player and songwriter Greg Allen was in a band with the late great Jerry Nolan (drummer for the New York Dolls, Johnny Thunders and the Heartbreakers). But Greg Allen is no Johnny Thunders clone. Yes, he's got that guttersnipe, raw guitar tone but he has a unique song writing style that evokes a dystopic world through a cast of twisted characters. CD $10 SKU:20560

ALLEN, GREG GROUP - Just for You (NEW YORK DOLLS) Label:BONAFIDEROCK Greg Allen was the last guy to play with Jerry Nolan (New York Dolls, Heartbreakers) - and the CD is dedicated to him - but don't expect another Johnny Thunders clone. He's got a unique song writing style that evokes a New York city that doesn't exist anymore through a cast of twisted characters. The music is pure rock and roll and includes performances by Johnny Rao (David Johansen Band/Helen Schneider and the Kick) and other luminaries. Get this while you can. "Greg Allen happens to be quite a musician and he writes good songs...He's good. He's really, really good."- Jerry Nolan, Tee Vee Tunes Records interview, 1991"Greg Allen played with ex-New York Doll Jerry Nolan and his band features some other folks with good bloodlines. They play rock music or, more specifically, "the kind they don’t make anymore..."- Bob Gulla, The Providence Phoenix, 2004 (Jun 18, 2004) CD $10 SKU:19309

ALPAY- YETKE (70s TURKISH FUZZ PSYCH) Label:PHARAWAY SOUNDS IIn Turkey, psychedelia wasnt just some fleeting fad. Fuzzed-out guitar shredding genuinely intersected with some of the goals of traditional folk & classical music. As a result, even former twist singers & folk balladeers explored some fascinating & wild territory. Meet Alpay, the soccer player turned lawyer turned singer who started matching local lyrics to Western arrangements even before the mid-60s countrywide battle of the bands concerts. These early 70s singles lay down doleful Anatolian melodies, and they're simply soaking in heavy & wah-ed out guitar solos. If you're ready to go beyond Baris & Erkin, this is the perfect spot. Remastered Sound, insert / booklet with liner notes by Angela Sawyer (Weirdo Records CD $12 SKU:19200

ALPHA STONE-SPACEMEN 3 - Stereophonic Pop Music- LAST COPIES Label:BOMP Debut album of this band formed by former SPACEMEN 3 's bassist and DARKSIDE vocalist/bassist Pete Bain. BEVIS FROND- The Aunt Winnie Album (80s psych legends)-Label:CHERRY RED 80s psych legends. Re-issue of the masterful double CD from 1989 with additional rarities including the 26 minute plus ‘Death Trip’. Sixth album by The Bevis Frond, originally released in 1989, and ripe for rediscovery. Four stars in Sounds, it was hailed as mixing “cosmic psycho instrumentals, melodic subterfuge plus guitar and Hammond duelling,” which was applauded as being “groovy as hell.” Hero worshipped by Byron Coley in Forced Exposure, raved about in psych fanzines across the globe, ‘Auntie Winnie’ is a timeless freak out that traverses the four corners of the world especially on the Egypt-inspired ‘City Of The Sun’. A true buried gem from one of music’s unsung heroes now rightfully re-evaluated. Remastered from the original sound sources with sleevenotes by The Bevis Frond's Nick Saloman. CD $10 SKU:21602

DEVIL’S KITCHEN- Been A Long Time Coming, Be A Long Time Gone- (legendary SF 60s psych ) Label:NONE Band-produced CD covers their entire rambling, gigging, rubbing-shoulders-with-a-multitude-of-famous-bands in the legendary San Francisco psychedelic scene of the late 1960’s existence. Duplicates only one track from the Lysergic Sound LP release of the band’s recordings, one of our best sellers here at Lion Productions… which means eleven recordings get their debut on this disc!"Devil's Kitchen Band was a four-piece rock and roll band that lived and performed in San Francisco from the spring of 1968 through the summer of 1970. They were the “house band” at Chet Helm’s “Family Dog on the Great Highway,” opening for, and often jamming with, many of the most well-known groups of the times. They performed at all of the major West Coast venues from San Francisco’s Fillmore to L.A.’s Whisky A Go Go. This CD is a collection of live recordings from 1969 and 1970 in San Francisco and is an attempt to give the listener the feel of being at a show at one of the venues of the times. The tracks were recorded on different days, in different halls, by different engineers. We have remastered these tracks to sound as much as possible as if they were all recorded the same evening as a coherent set of live music. We hope you enjoy this set of twelve songs from the late 60s San Francisco by one of the very talented but little known bands of the era. Peace, Love & Music, from Devil’s Kitchen” Legendary stuff, available at a crazy low price, in the least expected format in this day and age. So why hesitate or wonder? Africa Airways One & Two-Funk Connecion 1973-80 /Funk Departurures 1973-1982Label:CHERRY RED First released in 2015 as two separate vinyl compilations, “Africa Airways” is a deep exploration into the furthest parts of 1970’s and early 1980’s African Funk and Cherry Red are proud to join forces with the ace London/Paris label Africa Seven to collect the two volumes together on CD for the first time. The last decade has seen the un-tapping of an apparent endless well of music from the mother continent and this compilation (in our not so biased opinion) uncovers some of the cream of the crop and stands as one of the finest exponents of the African take on the music that it directly influenced, that being the funk and disco from the USA.Featuring music from Cameroon, Nigeria, South Africa and the international African diaspora with artists including Manu Dibango, Jo Tongo and Jake Sollo this a truly pan-African affair, full of analogue synths, polyrhythms, rich vocals, jangling guitars and production slicker than oil. For lovers of music to get down to, this will make your rubber soled shoes burn. The original pressing of the vinyl compilations sold out so quickly that another two represses had to be made to keep up with demand. For those not to latch on to the vinyl resurgence and prefer the old school CD format, this compilation is the one for you!!! File under: Funk, Makossa, Highlife, Awesome. COMP CD $10 SKU:21303

BEYOND THE CALICO WALL - VA ( 60s psych ) Label:VOXX The good people who put together this compilation set out to accomplish no less daunting a task than collecting the most bizarre and extreme underground psychedelic music recorded in the 1960's, and, for the most part, the choices seem to be right on the money. The collection starts off with "The Trip" by Park Avenue Playground, a song that bursts out of the gate with an explosion of fuzz guitar, organ, and mad siren-like oscillating effects, coming at you from all directions, seemingly. Next up is "Suzie's gone" by Afterglow, definitely one of the weirdest singles ever. The singer moans "so...my...world...is...messed...up!" in the most detached voice possible over a staccato organ and drum part, leading to a guitar solo that soon collapses into no recognizable conventional song structure. No less amazing is "Mt. Olympus" by The Flower Power, which starts off as an innocuous and somewhat introspective sounding piece until a wild heavily chorused guitar break, which only slightly warns you of the totally anarchic feedback and free-form noise ending -- which goes on for over a minute in a 3:40 single! Then you get a bizarre sci-fi/horror tale in "The pulse" by Burritt Bradley, and an incredible reading of The Electric Prunes' "I had too much to dream last night" by Rasputin and the Mad Monks, with weird proto-techno sound effects, backwards vocals, and production effects making the backing track fade in and out, creating a disturbing sensory assault. Other highlights include "An experiment in terror" by The Greek Fountains, which is a strange polyrhythmic instrumental, and "Up in my mind" by The Spontaneous Generation, which surely has to rank as one of the most aggressive 60's psych records ever made, with waves of vibrato guitar and insistent wah wah riffing. Also worthwhile is "The electronic insides and metal complexion that make up Herr Dr. Krieg," by The Riders of the Mark, which musically isn't quite as strange as its title, but comes close! The weirdness factor decreases somewhat as the c.d. progresses, and a sloppy but straightforward cover of "In a gadda da vida" by Six Feet Under makes for a pretty uninteresting closer, but the good material here makes this an essential purchase. Buy it if you like psychedelia, experimental or Incredibly Strange Music. BROWN ACID- THE EIGHTH TRIP (HEAVY ROCK FROM THE UNDERGROUND COMEDOWN)- Label:RIDING EASY The hard stuff saga continues with Brown Acid - The Eighth Trip! Yet again, we’ve searched high and low to bring you ten tracks of straight blue flame fire from the golden age of heaviness. As usual, these rare tracks have been carefully curated, analogically sourced, and fully licensed so you can listen guilt- free and save a lot of time and money tracking down the original copies. This Trip comes straight at ya with an all out attack, quite literally. The residents of St. Clair Shores should consider themselves lucky to have been so close to the greatness of Attack! “School Daze” kicks out the jams Detroit-style, but has enough flair and style to have our main man Jimi rolling over in his grave. Another prime example of why Detroit is known as Rock City!
Speaking of rock, White Rock will knock your stank-ass socks off with their 1972 burner “Please Don’t Run Away”. This 45 was privately released by this Houston-based band that reportedly played shows with Josefus, Stone Axe, and Purple Sun. And it was basically unknown until it surfaced at the Austin Record Convention in 2018! The fact that there are still completely unknown records out there to be discovered never ceases to amaze us.
They don’t say “Don’t Mess With Texas” for nothin’! Riverside called Austin home way before anyone was worried about keeping it weird. This two-sider from 1974 rips from front to back. It’s also exclusively available here and is virtually unknown. Go ahead, try to look for it anywhere. Currently, there’s no proof anywhere online that it exists From our neighbor up north, we bring you Luke and the Apostles! Don’t be fooled by the name, this ain’t no Xian group, even though this 45 is of biblical proportions. The flip of this single “You Make Me High” is a Faces-esque ballad of the highest caliber that will move you to tears if you’re not careful with it, but “Not Far Off” isn’t about moving you emotionally; it’s about moving you physically. Fuck jam? We think so. The Doors and Elektra Records’ producer Paul Rothchild called the Luke and the Apostles LP the “greatest album [he] never got to make”.
The lyrics to this 1977 single on Vacation Records are about as boneheaded as it gets. Hard rock songs from working class men about working hard and letting loose is a common theme in the Brown Acid realm, and “I Need My Music” by Mine Hill, New Jersey’s Tourists, is yet another great one to get you through the work week. I think we can all agree: we need our music too...among other things!
Ohio strikes again. This time a bit later than the other Buckeye State singles we’ve comped, but no less bangin’! On the Chance record label, the Bartos Brothers Band is billed as Gambler, but post-release, the band covered at least some of the copies with stickers that corrected this. There’s very little information about the Bartos Brothers Band online, and as of this writing, the release date is incorrect on Discogs and the Popsike hit very wrongly lists the genre as “Glam/Hair Metal” from the 1980s. We’re stoked to be compiling this single for the first time ever and to be setting the record straight.
And yet again, Ohio brings the thunder! We brought you the B-side of Inside Experience’s sole 45 back on the Third Trip and now we exhaust the band’s output by presenting their especially psychedelic cover of Cream's "Tales of Brave Ulysses”. The band pressed and sold out of 500 copies of this record back in 1968 thanks to some airplay on Detroit’s CKLW, but they never recorded again. However, Inside Experience’s lead guitarist and singer, Marty Soski, went on to play in Lance (as heard on the Fifth Trip) and two metal bands which you will be hearing sooner than later...
Karma, slightly better known as The Contents Are, released an LP and a 45 in 1967 and then followed up with their swan song “New Mexico” in 1969. The single was oddly released under Karma on the Onk Enterprizez label with “N.S.U.” as the B-side and on Rok Records as the flip to “Future Days” as The Contents Are. Apparently, Mercury Records bought the rights to the Rok 45 with the intention to release it nationally, but never actually got around to it. Their loss! Obviously we don’t need to go into how much great music Memphis, Tennessee has brought us over the years, but Moloch doesn’t usually get mentioned when we’re talking about the “Home of the Blues” and the “Birthplace of Rock and Roll.” Maybe we should change that. Moloch played with The MC5 and The Stooges and recorded an LP in 1969 for the Stax subsidiary, Enterprise Records. Although the band made a great blues rock record, it sadly didn’t get the love it deserved and the band folded. Moloch guitarist, Lee Baker, reformed the band with a slightly different line-up and released this 45 in 1972 against great odds. It too was unfairly overlooked...until now.
While we’re still talking about Memphis, y’all ever heard of this guy, Elvis Presley? Apparently, he was kind of a big deal and popularized a song called “Heartbreak Hotel” back in 1956. That’s cool and all, but damn us if we don’t dig Grump’s 1969 take on the song a whole hell of a lot more than the King’s version. Maybe that’s sacrilege, but nothing’s sacred when it comes to Brown Acid.COMP CD $10 SKU:21249

None of these tracks have previously been comped on vinyl anywhere. These unknown bands include Oracle, Wheatridge, the funereal organ and sludge guitar of Greylock Mansion, a 7 minute Hendrix space fuzz anthem by Frozen Sun and seven more similar unknown bands that leave you with a record full of acid-drenched trippy lyrics, swirling organ, spacey effects and heavy guitar with tons of fuzz and thumpin’ wah-wah. STRIP-O-RAMA + CD- Vol 3 (50s and 60s strip morsels?) Label:JUKEBOX MUSIC FACTORY Perhaps the densest (and most scandalous) compilation yet by the ever daring El Vidocq. Already a third folding album that opens to teasingly reveal more sumptuous "strip music" morsels. Indeed, the 1950s and '60s represent an inexhaustible source of delicious tunes, most of which just never hit it off with the media or masses. Once again, our indefatigable connoisseur raises the curtain on an arousing series of smooth tunes, with their languid rhythms, well-rounded melodies and cheeky grooves. An exciting mix of styles struts its stuff in various states of undress: rockabilly (Rusty & Doug Kershaw, Clyde Stacy), pop (Betty Reilly, Ella Johnson), crooner (Louis Jordan), rock (Chuck Miller), swing jazz (Joanie Sommers), burlesque (The Ramcocks), r'n'b (Gino Parks)... An eminently naughty selection of musical gems to peel off one by one. COMP LP $22 SKU:20715

WORKING CLASS DEVILS - Vol. 2: Fuzz, Vodka & Flowers – Polish Psychobeat 1965-1972" Label:BEAT ROAD "A 16-track collection of Polish 1960's rarities. Just when you think you know all about the late 60's/early70's scenes on the planet, along comes the second volume of the mind-broadening Working-Class Devils series to deliver unbelievable cuts and bands. The favorite bands from volume 1 are all there including Krzysztof Klenczon & Trzy Korony's prime freakbeat/psych fuzz rocker, Zdrój Jana's trademark proto no-wave skronky-guitar weirdness or Niebiesko-Czarni horsing around again with a distortion pedal. The newcomers Wi lanie and Lancety take no prisoners with their crude US-style garage punk while Piotr Pastor & S o ce and Wi lanie 69 reveal more folk/hippie leanings thrown in for good measure; there's even a Nederbeat gem that… turns out to be Polish and many, many more. These sides no doubt make for the ultimate in what could be tolerated in an Eastern Bloc country during the Cold War. Most of the tracks are excruciatingly obscure recorded during the cold war and then were shelved before excavated here in their juvenile glory. Non of these is re-issued on vinyl to date, which would spare you years of crate-digging. Couple all that with great band pictures and well-researched and exciting English-written liner notes and you have one hell of a disc including songs that could stand proud alongside anything released in the Free World at the time. 500 copies only." FRANKIE AND THE WITCH FINGERS-ST (heavy dose of witchy vibes, psychedelic shake and an incessant grind) Label:PERMANENT "Opening their album with more fuzz than an exploded dustbuster, Bloomington, Indiana's Frankie and the Witch Fingers are riding high on the hallmarks of the 2010's pantheon of garage rock heroes. Adding to the sonic soup a heavy dose of witchy vibes, psychedelic shake and an incessant grind that makes it feel vital and raw as skin peeled back, their sophomore album for Chicago's chief gutwrenchers, Permanent Records, is fueled by more than just paint by numbers rock. The band knows when to ride the tide of fuzz-addled freakout, knows when to break in the shake n' shimmy and knows just when to tear all the good times down for a good old fashioned dark horse that draws the shades and draws a little blood in the process. A solid offering from this band, reportedly uprooting from the doldrums of the Corn Belt to LA. It'll be interesting to see how the move affects their sound in the future, but for now these nuggets are more than worth the price of admission." - Raven Sings The Blues

"Frankie and the Witch Fingers are a garage rock outfit [originally] from Bloomington, Indiana, and with one song, they've made their forthcoming self-titled album on Permanent a hot album to pine for in 2015. Aside from the "True Detective" vibes, I'm not sure what exactly is going on in the "sexy and dangerous witchcraft" video for "Vibrations" which is puzzling, creepy and yet, sustains fascination. Regardless, this song is at the top of the heap when it comes to garage pop tunes that could've thrived in the 1960s. You just don't hear organ work like that anymore." - Evan Minsker @ Shake Appeal - The Pitch | Pitchfork ("Vibrations" Video Premier) LP $20 SKU:21534

HOOVERIII -ST (Recorded under the influence of Hawkwind, Amon Düül II, Black Sabbath and NEU!)Label:PERMANENT Never before has a debut album so seamlessly mixed all the best subgenres of 60 years of rock into such a fantastic crystalline stalactite. If the sounds contained within these grooves could be distilled down to something edible, even the smallest dose would be lethal. Recorded under the influence of Hawkwind, Amon Düül II, Black Sabbath and NEU! LP $22 SKU:21533

ORANG-UTAN - DINGED CORNER ST 1971 hard rock/psych- w insert ,rare pix and liner notes -Label:SOMMOR Included is an insert featuring rare pix and liner notes telling the bizarre story of the band for the first time.
Orang-Utan was a London based band that was actually named Hunter. The line-up featured vocalist Terry "Nobby" Clarke (of psych-pop legends Jason Crest), guitar player Mick Clarke, drummer and songwriter Jeff Seopardi and bass player Paul Roberts. They recorded their sole album in 1971. In a bizarre twist of events, their producers/managers took the tapes to the USA, where they arranged a release on Bell Records under a new band name, Orang-Utan, without telling any of the band members. The album is a lost classic of blazing, early hard-rock with minor psychedelic hangover vibes, a twin-guitar attack, and waves of fuzz/wah, along with powerful vocals. Think Leaf Hound, Budgie, Bang, Sir Lord Baltimore, Hard Stuff... This first ever legit reissue is done in co-operation with the original members. LP $26 SKU:16062

ROTOMAGUS - The Sky Turns Red: Complete Anthology 1971 DOUBLE LP proto punk w heavy duty gatefold jacket, & extras -Label:LION Proto punk w heavy duty gatefold jacket, which has the entirety of the Seth Man’s article on the band, plus the band’s history in both English and French. On Julian Cope’s excellent Head Heritage web-site, the Seth Man raves about Rotomagus thus: “The first time I heard this track (‘Fighting Cock’), I did not freak out. I merely walked into a nearby closet and screamed my head off for a minute solid, beat the floor and ripped my t-shirt... then I cowered when it hit me: this thing came out in 1971? Before “Raw Power”?! I just lost my mind... Hard to believe this is all pre-1971, as much of the demo is not just proto punk but proto hardc*re LP $22 SKU:14510

SALT LICK - ST (70s rock and roll style) -Label:PERMANENT Salt Lick is the very new L.A. trio with heavy connections to Permanent Records, Mock Records, Jesus Sons and that particularly collector-y Bonehead Crunchers/Crushers/etc.-style blunt-object 70s rock ‘n’ roll...Enthusiastically working the same grinding vibes of that recently rediscovered wave of old-school weirdos who got lost somewhere between prog rock they couldn’t play and punk rock they didn’t get, and who’s we-just-wanna-rock! 45s ended up creating a whole micro-genre of longhair off-the-grid proto-proto-punk. (Salt Lick also claims as an influence “the one good song on a bunch of major label LPs from the early 70s,” which is also very accurate—and Permanent/RidingEasy’s own Brown Acid comps also make a nice sampler of this sound.)" - LA Record"Coming on like an MC5 fever dream... Salt Lick’s debut ..shakes the window panes until they beg for mercy. See-sawing on a monster riff, the track is muddied and murky but I’ll be damned if it doesn’t knock the wind out of you. Salt Lick rounds up members from the Permanent staff, but its more than just a bit of nepotism here – it seems that those curating the power of pummel can also deliver it just as well. This is scuzzy, crusted, exhaust huffing garage rock with no spit shine in sight." LP $22 SKU:21532
