ARTHUR- Dreams and Images (60s psych folk)-Label:LITA A revealing artifact of the '60s psych folk scene as well as a statement of purpose by a struggling poet.Released on Lee Hazlewood’s LHI label, the haunting Dreams And Images is the first of two albums from the Melbourne, Florida-born singer-songwriter, Arthur. LHI was a broad church, taking in everything from soul to country, and Arthur found a home, a producer, and a champion in Hazlewood, who described him as “A man who will someday be a child again… A reason to cry and be unafraid… A bird with eighth-notes for wings.” Though his lonely, intimate music, shy demeanor, and stutter might not have suggested a man of great ambition, Arthur moved to Hollywood chasing the music industry dream. He suffered hardships to do so, living hand-to-mouth in a YMCA hostel with two like-minded individuals: Mark Lindsey Buckingham and Stephen John Kalinich, whose A World Of Peace Must Come has been reissued by Light In The Attic. “Arthur was a peace person. He was all about peace, love, and harmony,” remembers Kalinich in the brand new, extensive liner notes for Dreams And Images. “He was a person that believed you could change the world. We thought we would be some of the ones to usher in peace.” While Kalinich and Buckingham were signed by the Beach Boys’ Brother Records, Arthur allied with Hazlewood, having knocked on the door of the label’s Sunset Boulevard HQ and auditioned on the spot. Entering the studio with Hazlewood, Donnie Owens, Tom Thacker, and arranger Don Randi, who brought baroque pop grandeur to the songs, Arthur let his music do the talking. "He stuttered and had a hard time getting his ideas out, so he would sing me the parts he had in mind,” remembers Randi. A mixture of things conspired to make sure few people heard Arthur, including a packed release schedule at LHI, followed by the withdrawal of their major label funding and a lack of foundation on which to market the album. After the 1970 follow-up album, Love Is The Revolution, Arthur bowed out of the business CD $10 SKU:24164

BOB FRANK-ST (1972 stoner rock)Label:LITA Originally released in 1972 on Vanguard Records, Bob Frank’s self titled debut album took elements of Dylan, Johnny Cash, and Ian Tyson and filtered it through a pot-smoked haze infused with Frank’s long-time friend, Memphis guru Jim Dickinson. Dickinson and Frank shared a mutual admiration that ran so deep that on Dickinson’s own 1972 debut album Dixie Fried (released on Atlantic Records) he recorded one of Bob’s songs, ‘Wild Bill Jones.’ Despite the Dickinson/Memphis connection, Bob Frank’s only LP for Vanguard has remained a forgotten, hard to find vinyl relic.
Carefully re-mastered from the original tapes, historical maverick (and noted expert on the Memphis scene) Alec Palao recently interviewed Frank in detail and assembled a lengthy essay for the CD and LP liner notes that detail Frank’s personal and musical journey. As Dickinson once deadpanned, “Bob went to Vietnam and Nashville. I don’t know which was worse.” It was also an itinerant period, when Frank spent many a stoned evening staggering alone through the mid-south urban gothic landscape of church steps and sleaze bars, with his guitar glued to his arm, if not an actual extension of it. Songs would emerge from dreams or drunken visions. But this was not artless acid folk, but a series of picaresque, well-sketched vignettes delivered in a clearly-enunciated vernacular, and all very much in Frank’s own style. CD $10 SKU:24165

ACROSS THE WATER-ST (1975 prog rock rarity)Remastered, Gatefold-Label:SEELIE COURT Split LP has neo-classical prog rock epic on side one, and “gorgeous” downer folk on side two. "An unknown and precious album recorded in 1975 by two friends who recorded one side each, they made just two acetates and then handmade beautiful covers from two enlargements of a photograph of the Isles of St Kilda. Side one is a neo classical prog rock epic in the style of Renaissance and Continuum, inspired by the wild and pagan isles of St Kilda where, as a 16 yr old, the composer Peter McKerrow was taken by military launch to conduct a census on the rare Soay Sheep that live there. A storm blew away his tent on the first night. The other side is by his Canadian pal who attended the same Uni in england, deeply homesick for Canada and surviving a broken relationship these songs are melancholic and Leonard Cohen-esque. The original Lp is astonishingly gorgeous and one of the most desirable artifacts of the prog era.” Gatefold edition, limited to 500x copies. LP $28 SKU:24143

AMON DUUL - PARADIESWARTZ DUUL-legendary 1971 Krautrock Label:WAH WAH Recorded in 1971, Amon Düül’s only album for Ohr was a visonary slice of acid-folk which has gained cult status as years passed by. Ritualistic folk-rock, pastoral hippie songs, stoned jams, eastern flavours, mystical passages and heavy hypnotic riffing which are in fact very different from the early Amon Düül epic freaked-out improvisations (Psychedelic Underground) or Amon Düül II complex and psyched-up progressive works (Phallus Dei). LP $28 SKU:24144

CAEDMON-ST(1979 private press prog folk) w 7”Label:GUERSSEN Caedmon -a five piece student band in the '70s- recorded this album to mark their farewell concert in early 1978, before they went their separate ways after university. CONSTANTINE -IN MEMORY OF A SUMMER DAY(Underground psych folk) Label:GUERSSEN Day Of Light', the first album by Chicago musician Constantine, released as a private edition in 2015, took the underground psych-folk scene by storm and it's now a cult album between psychedelic aficionados. Constantine's second effort 'In Memory Of A Summer Day' is another psychedelic folk-rock gem filled with pastoral tales of adventure, beauty and sorrow. LP $28 SKU:24149

FLUX-ST (1973 monsterpiece King Crimson style) GATEFOLD Label:SEELIE COURT Searing art rock monsterpiece dominated by a relentlessly coruscating lead guitar sonic attack as if played by a demonically possessed John McLaughlin. Flux is ex-Babe Ruth, ex-Motiffe, with lead guitar by John Grimaldi before he joined Argent and worked on their prog masterpiece 'Circus'. This LP is taken from a mono mastertape recorded on a BBC Mobile Unit at a live gig in 1973. A shocked Record Mirror journalist witnessed the concert and described it in a published Record Mirror review as 'a new form of music'. Sound quality is great and this is a band in top form playing exactly what they want, in a zone a bit like King Crimson's 'Red', but with insane guitar leads that bludgeon the listener to death. The vocalist later joined Italian prog rockers Flea On The Honey. Play this with a hangover and you will die in screaming agony. One very short track, and four very long ones. The gig ended with an IRA bomb scare. Yes really. LP $28 SKU:24151

KAK-ST(rare 1968 Calif. psych!) Label:MAD ABOUT GUERSSEN A West Coast classic back on vinyl at last! Recorded in 1968, the lone album by the group known as Kak is a beloved masterpiece, full of the inspiration and promise associated with the California psychedelic dream. The oddly-named, eminently talented quartet from the college town of Davis was together less than a year from start to finish, yet within that short time created a record renowned for powerful performances, solid production values and the brilliance of its song craft, with a full playlist of compelling material like ‘Electric Sailor’, ‘Lemonaide Kid’ and ‘Trieulogy'. Kak can stand nobly alongside records like Surrealistic Pillow, Electric Music For The Mind And Body, Sailor or the first Moby Grape album, as one of the most satisfying listens of the late 1960s SF rock renaissance.
This newly remastered vinyl edition features extensive liner notes by Kak aficionado Alec Palao, with contributions from band members Gary Lee Yoder, Dehner Patten, Joe-Dave Damrell and Chris Lockheed.“First rate westcoast psych” – Patrick Lundborg (Acid Archives)Housed in heavy cardboard sleeve plus OBI. SPOILS OF WAR - ST (PRE MORMOS PSYCH )60s DOUBLE-LP with POP-UP GATEFOLD SLEEVE and a BONUS 7-INCH! Label:WAH WAH A fantastic release offering the complete late '60s recordings from US pre-MORMOS outfit SPOILS OF WAR. Before relocating to France, where he formed the highly regarded prog/psych-folk unit MORMOS in the early '70s, American musician James Cuomo was the creative force of The Spoils Of War. This interesting band combined psychedelic rock with adventurous electronic experimentation, comparable to f.i. The United States Of America/Joe Byrd And The Field Hippies and 50 Foot Hose, with a dash of folkrock due to the contributions from female vocalist Annie Hat. Back in the day the band only released two rare 7-inches, but thanks to the -now out of print- releases from Shadoks Records, Spoils Of War achieved cult status afterall. Now this deluxe Wah-Wah Records double-LP collects the remastered '60s studio recordings from the band, complete with previously unissued material, making for a splendid release. Also included are a repress of the debut 7-inch, a sticker, full colour pix, and liner notes from Jim Cuomo and Klemen Breznikar (It's Psychedelic Baby). Essential for psych lovers and collectors everywhere! LP $45 SKU:24156

STRANG, JOHN-THE MASTERPEACE (private press 1968 folk rock rarity) Label:SEELIE COURT A super rare privately pressed folk rock LP from 1968 is now finally available on a bigger scale! The LP was originally pressed in a super limited run of 25 copies, which nowadays are obviously unaffordable! Sir John Graves, who after his musical career became a leading authority on the psychiatry of drug addiction, recorded this delightful, somewhat Donovanesque LP with two friends (Valentine Lewis Lloyd and Martin Farquharson) in Wales when he was only 17 years old. LP $28 SKU:24155

UNDERDOGS BLUES BAND-ST (1968 legendary electric blues)-Label:WAH WAH The 1968 debut-LP by New Zealand's legendary electric blues group The Underdogs sees its first ever legit reissue on vinyl. On this album the band stormed into a world of guitar led rave-ups à la Yardbirds, some intense organ blues grinders and even hint at what's to come next with some incipient heavier sounds in the Cream vein. This edition, presented with a gatefold sleeve and an insert, is limited to 500 copies. LP $28 SKU:24160

WARLOCK -40 ANOS ANTES (1974 first satanic/occult hard-rock band from Spain)Label:SOMMOR/PAKISTAN Warlock could be considered the first satanic/occult hard-rock band from Spain. With roots in proto-doom band Necrophagus, formed in Madrid by singer/guitar player Victor Ramos in 1974, Warlock were heavily influenced by Black Sabbath, Lucifer's Friend and Hawkwind but they were too dark and wild-looking for the record companies of the time. During their brief existence, 1977-79, they supported the Ian Gillan Band at the Teatro Monumental, Madrid, 1979. They also shared stage with bands like Burning, Cai, Teddy Bautista & Canarios, Azahar, John Martyn, Eduardo Bort, etc. In 1978, they recorded a bunch of demos, collected here for the first time. Raw and wild lo-fi psychedelic hard-rock/proto-doom with space-rock touches! Includes colour insert with photos, memorabilia and liner notes. Includes eight self-penned songs with titles like 'Archives Of The Universe', 'Cortocircuito', 'Earth', 'Control Perdido', 'Space Ritual' (which is not a Hawkwind cover but a tribute to Dave Brock's band, whom Victor once met in France), etc, plus a cover of Black Sabbath's 'Paranoid'.. KENSINGTON MARKET- Avenue Road (60s pop) LAST COPIES! Label:PACEMAKER A staple on the Yorkville Village scene in Toronto during the mid-to-late '60's, Kensington Market were discovered in 1967 by musical entrepreneur Bernie Finkelstein (who would later help The Paupers and Bruce Cockburn, among others). Finkelstein was able to land the band a record deal with Warner Brothers. In 1968 Kensington Market did the soundtrack to the NFB film "The Ernie Game"—a big deal for a Canadian band. That same year they released their debut album, “Avenue Road,” (named after a street that intersects Yorkville Avenue). It was a modest effort, noteworthy for decent pop instincts and solid songwriting. This album tinkles like wind-chimes, refracts light like a sun-catcher in the window, has the charm of a luminous crescent moon candle, glow-in-the dark stars on the bedroom ceiling. Kensington Market were produced by Felix Pappalardi of Mountain fame, who also produced the Cream. Kensington Market were: Gene Martynec (keyboard, guitar, vocals), Keith McKie (rhythm guitar, vocals), Luke Gibson (guitar, vocals), Alex Darou (bass), and Jimmy Watson (drums & percussion). Same personnel both albums. Martynec later showed up as an arranger on Lou Reed's “Berlin” album! A band ripe for rediscovery. CD $10 SKU:19936

PAUPERS - Magic People ( 60s Byrds style ) - Label:PACEMAKER The Paupers, along with the Guess Who, were one of the first Canadian bands to capitalize on the British Invasion. Their early sound was a classy mixture of roots music, blues and folk-rock (think early Byrds or Lovin Spoonful. Great great work by The Paupers essentially a 60s folk rock combo, but one with a really groovy sound! The group come up with loads of great guitar interplay on the session -- janging acoustic and electric together in a style that comes up with some nice hippie and eastern edges -- and which means that even on the vocal tracks, the album's got an instrumental charm that kind of links it to some of the hipper rock/jazz crossover projects on labels like Verve and Impulse at the time. Most tracks do have vocals, in a style that ranges from Sunshine Pop to folksy -- and the whole album's pretty darn great, filled with tracks that include "Let Me Be", "Magic People", "It's Your Mind", "Black Thank You Package", "Simple Deed", and "Tudor Impressions". This edition includes 2 bonus tracks: "Like You, Like Me" and "Sooner Than Soon CD $10 SKU:11174

VALENTI,DINO -ST (overlooked classic 60s psych)Label:FLOATING WORLD An overlooked classic of maybe the deepest 60's psychedelic/folk rock ever recorded. Born Chet Powers, Valente wrote the classic 60's hit ‘Get Together' and soon became a prominent figure in the summer of love in San Francisco he joined Quicksilver Messenger Service in their early days and re-joined later as lead vocalist and main songwriter composing most of the material on “What About Me" and “Just For Love." He also wrote the track 'Fresh Air,' the nearest thing Quicksilver ever came to having a hit single. This album is the only solo work he ever produced and he sadly died in 1994. Dino Valente's sole album recalls the one issued by another San Francisco artist signed to CBS in the late '60s, Skip Spence: quirky, lyrically vague, folky yet psychedelic, and nearly devoid of commercial potential in spite of its largely pleasant (if moody) melodies and textures. CD $10 SKU:22186

CONGREGATION FOR ANTI FLIRTS -The McAllen, Texas Teen Scene 1965-1967 -Label:CICADELIC RECORDS \Subtitled: The McAllen, Texas Teen Scene 1965-1967. "From 1965 to 1967, McAllen was the happening scene for some of the wildest music to emanate from Texas in the '60s. The label that played host to these bands was Jimmy Nichol's Pharaoh Records and this album contains the best the label had to offer. Not only were the records superlative, but today they are considered some of the rarest finds for collectors of '60s garage bands. Singles by Pharaoh artists such as The Headstones, The Cavaliers, and Christopher and The Souls go for over a grand apiece, if they can be located. Congregation For Anti-Flirts Inc. also contains in depth coverage on the McAllen bands with rare photos, radio charts, and interviews, making this album a journey to pharaoh's valley that can't be missed. UNKNOWN ARTIST -The BECK STUDIO ACETATE 1969-Label:SEELIE COURT (UK) Cut in Northampton’s Beck studios circa 1969 and thought to be connected to Axe’s lead guitarist, this band remain completely unknown — only one battered acetate exists which has been held in a private collection for decades. It has track titles but no band name, with all research drawing blanks. Regardless, this is arguably the finest example of blistering underground heavy prog jamming ever graven in acetate or vinyl. And the band are at the top of their game: this is not a dodgy private press, it’s the real mccoy — a band that’s honed a perfect organic sound, with fantastic interplay, male and female vocal leads, and a guitarist completely on fire, possibly Axe’s Anthony Barford (RIP) as theorised by Dark’s Steve Giles… but we can’t be sure. Four long tracks. If you like Uriah Heep, May Blitz, and a touch of Jefferson Airplane, you need this. The final track is a space ballad with the girl on lead vocal; she outclasses Grace Slick and Julie Driscoll. Fact. Ranks with Dark. Valued in excess of £10,000.” Limited to 500x copies.
