NEW ARRIVALS

FREAK SCENE - Psychedelic Psoul ( 60s raga rock ) SALE- Label:LION Fresh from his studio experiences with The Deep and the Third Bardo, Rusty Evans decided to create a psychedelic “happening” which would also function as a recording group. He gathered together a few New York musicians, including three members of the Deep (David Bromberg among them), dubbed them the Freak Scene, and began work on the “Psychedelic Psoul” album, which was released in 1967. The intention was to pursue the Indian-Eastern influence in rock—and this raga rock idea is used to great effect on songs like ‘Grok’ and ‘Rose of Smiling Faces’ (sounds like it could have been the sole inspiration for Damon’s “Song of a Gypsy” album). As the only true psychedelic band on Columbia at the time, the Freak Scene got decent exposure. No doubt this number would have been much greater had the band been a touring ensemble, instead of a one-time psychedelic event. The album is gritty, tense, subversive, brittle, and yes, psychedelic. Perfect in its own way. Included as bonus tracks are nine demos from the summer of 1966, some of which would end up in quite a different musical context on The Deep “Psychedelic Moods” and Freak Scene albums. These songs, with their P. F. Sloan/Dylan (or even Sixto Rodriguez) vibe deepen the legacy of edgy, insightful songs from Rusty Evans/Marcus Uzilevsky. Comes with a 16-page booklet which includes a biographical portrait of Marcus, printed on FSC recycled, chlorine-free, 100% post-consumer fiber paper manufactured using biogas energy. CD $10 SKU:11550

SEEDS -VAMPIRE/ BUTTERFLY CHILD (60s garage psych) Label:HYPNOTIC BRIDGE The Seeds remain amongst the most beloved and iconographic of the original 1960s garage-psych avatars. To many, their edgy dissonant sounds and relentless fuzz-fuelled drive, tinged with flights of psychedelic fancy, makes The Seeds the quintessential exponent of the genre, as heard on such classics-for-the-ages as “Pushin’ Too Hard,” “Can’t Seem To Make You Mine” and “Mr Farmer.”. 45 RPM $10 SKU:24292

GALACTIC RAMBLE-A comprehensive critical guide to '60s and '70s UK musicLabel: Galactic Ramble' is by far the most comprehensive critical guide to '60s and '70s UK music in existence. The first edition was published in 2009 and quickly sold out, with second-hand copies selling for many times the original cover price. This revised and expanded second edition is more than twice as long, totalling well over a million words, and has taken a decade to put together. It contains a massive amount of new information and imagery, and completely supersedes the first edition. It features several thousand reviews of British and Irish rock, pop, folk and jazz LPs issued between roughly 1963 and 1975, spanning major label and independent releases, private pressings, library music and more. It also covers many albums by British artists that were only released abroad. It offers over a thousand rare or previously unseen images, as well as two sections of colour plates depicting collectable LP sleeves. There is no book like it for serious music fans BOOKS & MAGS $150 SKU:24284

SAALE REMINDERS AND RESTOCKS

60s aura) Label:ALIVE Fluff is a magnificent Rock & Roll album overflowing with so many stellar, brain-burrowing melodies, it’s more than fair to call it a Power Pop record (emphasis on both the “power” and the “Pop,” equally). Gabbard recorded the entire album in one 12-hour session and played all of the instruments, something you would never guess by listening — it sounds like a full band that has been together as long as Gabbard’s main project. The guitars are often loud and blissfully fuzzed out, while the bass and drums pound out the rhythms with muscular abandon. Blended with those remarkable, often gorgeous melodies, it creates a sort of joyous “dirty beauty” that is irresistible. – Cincinnati Beat CD $5 SKU:16539

FLAMIN' GROOVIES-SAN FRANCISCO NIGHTS:LIVE 1979-80 SAALE!-Label:VOGON The Flamin' Groovies captured live on stage during the band's power poppin' 'Now' and 'Jumpin'In The Night' era!! CD $15 SKU:19545

FLAMIN' GROOVIES-SUPERSNAZZ (1969 debut)-Label:TONEFLOAT he Flamin' Groovies' debut album went almost directly into the cut-out bins within a year or so of its 1969 release. Fortunately, the band survived the neglect heaped on that record—and in the ensuing years, Supersnazz has achieved an exalted reputation among not just Groovies fans, but lovers of rock & roll in general, having held up extraordinarily well across the decades, and still able to make its own case for greatness as an astonishing document of straight-ahead rock & roll circa 1969. It’s fully contemporary to its time (and, by extension, almost timeless), with none of the artificial period nostalgia (and parodying) that was already creeping into the "oldies" scene. It's also a lot of fun; in fact, based on the evidence, Supersnazz may well have been the most fun record of 1969. Roy Loney, Cyril Jordan, Tim Lynch, George Alexander, and Danny Mihm run through a quirky mix of Loney and Loney/Jordan originals and standards, encompassing styles from proto-'70s punk (want to bet the Ramones wore out copies of this album?) to '50s New Orleans R&B, country music, and even ragtime, and while a small bit of it is compromised by the presence of some too-prominent clarinet and saxophone, the whole record is a rollicking good time, made even better by the sequencing, which offers a full range of surprises, even on the fourth or fifth listen -- one can never settle in with this record before something weirdly wonderful comes along to draw the listener in yet another direction. From the fiery, Brian Jones-era Stones-style, fuzztone-driven opener 'Love Have Mercy,' the band shows what it can do in everything from straight-ahead boogie to slow ballads ('A Part from That') and '50s rockers ('The Girl Can't Help It,' 'Rockin' Pneumonia and the Boogie Woogie Flu'), country (‘Brushfire'), and R&B, all done with a unique array of stylistic flourishes that made this one of the most original long-players of 1969. By the ninth track, the pounding, punk-driven 'Somethin' Else/Pistol Packin' Mama,' the whole album achieves a kind of otherworldly continuum, like something out of a strange and wonderful corner of the universe that -- though none knew it at the time -- pointed the way to a coming decade of achievement by the likes of the Ramones, Jonathan Richman, et al, not to mention the Groovies themselves. CD $10 SKU:22506

FOWLEY , KIM - Worm Culture (early Runaways manager!) LAST COPIESLabel:ALIVE 1994 studio recording. One of his weirdest releases. One of the most colorful characters in the annals of rock and roll, Kim Fowley was, over the course of his decades-long career, a true jack-of-all-trades; a singer, songwriter, producer and manager -- as well as a disc jockey and published poet -- he was the catalyst behind much of the music to emerge from the Los Angeles area during the 1960s and 1970s, guiding his associates and proteges to fame and fortune while remaining himself a shadowy cult figure well outside the margins of the mainstream. CD $5 SKU:21920

FRANKLIN, RON - ST /( Dylanesque blues rock discovered by Peter Case )-Label:ALIVE From Bob Dylan to the Black Keys, Franklin went in search of his musical heroes-and found them-down on Highway 61." - Crawdaddy. "Ron Franklin is a young, super talented guitar and mandolin playin singer with a lonesome but rockin' voice, knows music, especially blues and old music, writes great new songs." - Peter Case CD $5 SKU:23321

FRANTIC FLATTOPS-HI-FI HONEY REVISITED (rockabilly )Label:GET HIP Rockabilly ain’t big. Never has been. Even in its Eisenhower heyday, rockabilly never basked in the mainstream’s lucrative luminescence. What did manage to slip through the cracks was, for the most part, painfully polished, cleaned up, and made ready for the countless vanilla masses. Although it has reared its snaky head several times since then, rockabilly remains, lurking happily in the underground with bands like The Frantic Flattops, maniacally grinning in the dark. This remastered and expanded reissue of The Flattops’ 1993 debut features the original LP, three live cuts recorded for WMAX in July ’93, three previously unheard collaborations with rockabilly icon Ronnie Dawson, and bonus track "Teenage Partner." (2003) CD $10 SKU:22633

FREDDY AND THE FOREGONE CONCLUSIONS - WIGGED OUT SOUNDS (Detroit garage punk Question Mark style) Label:GET HIP ARCHIVE In the hallowed halls of Detroit's garage punk legacy, only one man remains committed to the original doctrine layed out by bands like Question Mark and the Mysterians and the Unrelated Segments. That man is Freddy Fortune. Blasting off with Detroit-area chord mashers the Covingtons in 1988, the mid '90s found Fortune in an auspicious pairing with friend and collaborator Michael Maltese. The result, Fortune and Maltese and the Phabulous Pallbearers, would burn a trail of garage punk genius across the U.S. and abroad, spreading the gospel of lo-fi love to rock 'n' roll fans everywhere. Now Fortune returns, once again bearing the torch for of Detroit garage with a new sound and a new ensemble. Freddy and the Four Gone Conclusion have but one purpose ladies and genlemen, to get you off your seat, on your feet and rockin' outta control. Squares beware -- these guys mean business! Well folks 36 years later the mystery is finally laid to rest right here on this platter. Recorded and Produced by Freddy & the boys, and mixed at Detroit's mecca of garage, Ghetto Recorders with ! Jim Diamond. The album is a non stop powerhouse of 60's fueled Michigan Mayhem. CD $10 SKU:22170

SUMMER TURNS TO AUTUMN - Ember Rock, Vol. 2 (RARE 60S PSYCH& PROG)-Label:FANTASTIC VOYAGE British indie label Ember released a number of rock albums and singles between 1969 and 1972, which today are much sought after by collectors of psychedelic, progressive and folk rock sounds. Many of the best tracks from these are gathered on “Summer Turns To Autumn”. Foremost among the artists compiled here is progressive rock band Blonde On Blonde, represented by tracks from both of their Ember albums. Fantastic Voyage has salvaged two tracks from Blue Beard s album. An early songwriting/production project for Bob Welch, who next surfaced in Fleetwood Mac, the album was only released in Italy, but the single ‘Sly Willy’ was more widely available and is highly prized by collectors of funky rock. Tyrannosaurus Rex-style acoustic hippy duo Knocker Jungle and progressive folk group 9.30 Fly each managed one now highly collectable long player for the label. The remainder of the material ranges from the fuzzy psychedelic rock of Canadians The Dorians and the melodic folk rock of Paddy Maguire, backed by heavy friends Steve Winwood and Jerry Donahue (of Fotheringay), to the soul-rock fusion of Milt Matthews Inc, here interpreting a Blind Faith song, and a previously unissued folk rock rendition of ‘East Virginia’ by Polly Niles. “Summer Turns To Autumn” complement Fantastic Voyage’s existing, highly popular compilations of Ember Beat and Ember Pop, with no duplication of tracks. TWO TIMING BABY -Ember Sixties Pop: Volume 2, 1961-1962Label:FANTASTIC EMBER In 1960, Jeffrey Kruger launched Ember Records as an independent, one of very few in the UK, where the majors held sway. Straight away, the label set about trying to break into the charts with many fine pop releases. The Ember Sixties Pop series compiles the best of those records. “Two Timing Baby” picks up the story from where Say When: Ember Sixties Pop Volume 1 (FVCD044) left off. Carter, Lewis & The Southerners first Ember single ‘Two Timing Baby’/’Will It Happen To Me’ features Joe Meek engineering, Geoff Goddard on piano, Albert Lee on guitar, Chas Hodges on bass and Bobby Graham on drums. The Meek connection continues with Mark Douglas only single: Joe produced ‘It Matters Not’/’Upside Down’ and Tornado Clem Cattini confirms he drums on both tracks. American songwriters Buddy Kaye and Phil Springer penned many hits, including ‘The Next Time’ for Cliff Richard. They brought several songs to Ember and Grant Tracy was the adaptable vocalist on ‘The Great Matchmaker’/’The Tears Came Rolling Down’ and the follow-up flip ‘Taming Tigers.’ Other beneficiaries of the prolific Kaye and Springer were Johnny Carson (‘Are You Anyone s Girl’/’Teenage Bachelor’ and, again, ‘The Tears Came Rolling Down’) and Sandra Gale (‘Hello Heartache’/’If She s Right For You’) who had been girl singer with the Ray Ellington Quartet, joining Ember when Ellington did. Kruger chose the songs for Lita Roza’s single with the aim of moving her sound towards pop and rock n roll, and she turns in fine performances on ‘Mama (He Treats Your Daughter Mean)’/’(He s My) Dreamboat,’ aided by a driving band led by Tony Crombie. Brooklyn-born Kerry Adams recorded her single in New York, conducted by future soul giant Jerry Ragovoy. The Dale Sisters cute harmonies are evident on their second Ember single, ‘Road To Love’/’Secrets.’ Tommy Sanderson’s second Ember 45 combined trad-jazz ‘Ding Dong Rag’ with groovy ‘Piano A Go Go,’ which would have made a great theme for a TV detective show. Many of these original singles are highly collectable (mint copies of Mark Douglas are valued at £75, Carter, Lewis & The Southerners at £50 and Lita Roza at £30). Subsequent volumes will carry the story through to the end of the sixties, with further sought after tracks included. The series is complemented by compilations devoted to beat and rock from the Ember vaults. Recordings are mastered from tape, where available, and booklets illustrated with sleeve and label shots. Nice shrink-wrapped slip-case packaging. COMP CD $10 SKU:19205

There’s a lot in their music, as ‘Past the Ditch‘ demonstrates – a pinch of folk – guitarist Ben Todd wisely spent time transposing old banjo tunes to his finger picking style – a sprinkle of country blues and a swirl of Canned Heat boogie. – AMERICANA UK

They’re raw, extremely expressive, and a bit odd. – AMERICAN BLUES SCENE

LUCIFER WAS -Underground And Beyond (1972 Killer cult proto-metal)-Label:SOMMER Killer hard psych-prog from Norway! “Underground And Beyond” was the debut album by cult proto-metal band LUCIFER WAS, containing songs written in 1971-72 but not recorded until 1997. Remastered sound, colour insert with liner notes by Klemen Breznikar (It’s Psychedelic Baby) plus rare photos. Established in 1970 in Oslo, Lucifer Was were a powerful psychedelic hard-rock / hard-prog band that lasted until 1975. During those years, they gigged locally and played at some big festivals but they never got the chance to register any recording. The band hibernated until 1996 when they reunited again for a live concert. The chemistry was still there so they entered a recording studio and recorded in just 18 hours their first ever album, “Underground and Beyond”, featuring songs written in 1971-72. Their line-up included two flute players plus bass, drums and the killer lead guitar of Thore Engen. Originally released in 1997 as a picture disc LP, here’s the first ever standard LP reissue. DRUM CIRCUS -Magic Theatre (1971 truly insane psych with LSD drenched lyrics)SAALE! - Label:GARDEN OF DELIGHTS Rare album by Swiss band, featuring two members of Brainticket including their leader Joel Van Droogenbroec; truly insane psychedelic music with LSD drenched lyrics by Timothy Leary; first released in 1971. "Founder and leader of Drum Circus was master drummer Peter Giger. “A giant on drums”, as the newspaper “Rhein-Main-Zeitung” called him. He was joined by two additional drummers, as well as by Joel Vandroogenbroeck and Carole Muriel, both from Brainticket. Therefore, it’s not surprising that “Magic theatre”, with its LSD-dripping lyrics (partly written by Timothy Leary, partly influenced by The Tibetan Book of the Dead), is a lot like early Brainticket. “Magic theatre” was recorded in the excellent studio of Horst Jankowski in Stuttgart. Yet, it remained unreleased. Shortly before his death, Horst Jankowski gave the tapes to Peter Giger CD $17 SKU:21973

DUNGEN- TIO BITAR ( Swedish psych ) SAALE! Label: SUBLIMINAL SOUNDS Over the past two years, the profile of Swedish psychedelic rockers Dungen has grown at an alarming rate, from a cult studio project into a worldwide musical phenomenon. And on Tio Bitar, we're hearing the end results of an outpouring of success and support - one which has, for once, inspired the creative processes at hand to make something wholly new and original, yet remaining within the same sphere of emotions that fostered Dungen's three previous albums. Gustav Ejstes, Dungen's founder and principal member, made Tio Bitar (translated, "Ten Pieces") - a bracing display of psychedelic rock, presented with a bright, avid confidence largely by himself, with the assistance of guitarist Reine Fiske. Gustav wrote the songs, and played all of the instruments on his own, with Reine on many lead guitar and bass parts; his style of play puts him well within the top ranks of modern guitar heroes past and present. First pressing is a limited edition in a silver foil slipcase of 8,000 copies CD $10 SKU:23673

EMMANUELLE PARRENIN- Maison Rose (60s hippie folk) Label:LION We begin by saying that this is an album unlike any other. A bold statement, perhaps. Yet look in the "Scented Gardens of the Mind" book and you will see this description: "a revelation of a folk album, with songs of incredible beauty and innovative arrangements. It features traditional instruments you’ve hardly ever heard before and touches of the avant-garde. Play this album directly after that of another randomly chosen female folk album, and you will notice the difference! This is one of the best!" Parrenin had been part of a traditional "antique folk" movement in France in the late 1960’s (she was in many ways a French equivalent to Sandy Denny or Mandy Morton); indeed, she had recorded eight albums with musicians from this scene before "Maison Rose"—her best, and last album, recorded in 1976 and released the following year. The record seems to alternate between a cosmic take on an ancient Breton sound, and delicate, multi-tracked ballads—ranging from sounds that would not be out of place on an Ash Ra Tempel album to elements of traditional French folk music (including home-made instruments) that are just as exotic. Certainly, the avant-garde edge lurking beneath the simple folkiness of "Maison Rose" puts in mind the explorations of Brigitte Fontaine with her sometime musical voyager Areski; there are also suggestions of the pastoral caranavserai aesthetic of Vashti Bunyan, as well as the multi-track sensuality of Linda Perhacs (to name two much-touted singers who seem to have a similar ability to enchant). But Parrenin has her own style, her music has its own deeply ethereal quality, and the album itself has its own magic spell to cast that renders comparison with other albums unimportant in the end. Magnificent… CD $10 SKU:20095

FALLEN ANGELS- Mad Hatters Meet The Fallen Angels (unreleased 1966 Byrds style) Label:CICADELIC In 1965, Barry Seidel formed a music company called Traydel Productions. The first band Seidel signed was the Mad Hatters from Washington DC. In the course of one year the band released three stunningly great singles, 'I Need Love,' 'Go Find a Love' and 'I'll Come Running,' all with Dylanesque-PF Sloan sounding folk-rock songs as the B-sides. Mad Hatter live shows were legendary as well, as is exemplified by the explosion of the amps during their electrifying medley of 'Since You've Been Gone/I'm All Right/The Mad Hatter Theme' and their rocking version of 'I Need Love,' both included on this album along with all their singles, making this the most complete collection of Mad Hatters' material ever released. The Fallen Angels were the second band Seidel signed and they are represented by a six song set of singles and unreleased recordings from 1966. These are the earliest recordings by the band and range from folk-rock ('Pebble In My Sand,' 'Hello Girl,' 'I Have Found') to Love (Arthur Lee) type ballads ('Have You Ever Lost A Love,' 'Every Time I Fall In Love') and garage ('Who Do You Love?'). In addition to all this excitement are two previously unreleased 1966 folk-rock Byrds sounding gems from the Loved Ones, plus a 1967 version of 'I Need Love' by the Time Stoppers. Rare photos and radio promos make this a complete trip back to 1966, when the Mad Hatters and the Fallen Angels were the two hottest bands in Washington DC and 'I Need Love' mania swept the airwaves." FUGITIVOS,LOS - En La Esquina (MExican Creedence! Great covers)- Label:DIMSA MINI LP COVERLos Fugitivos were a Mexican rock band who cut a hard-to-find album for Dimsa in 1969, which gets an expanded reissue in this edition from Rockbeat. For the most part, En La Esquina finds Los Fugitivos covering popular American rock tunes of the day en Español, though they dig a bit deeper for a psychedelic version of Sonny Boy Williamson's "Good Morning Little Schoolgirl" with lots of soloing, and a spirited run through Roy Orbison's "Ooby Dooby," as well as a few originals. What really sets Los Fugitivos apart is their apparent status as Mexico's biggest Creedence Clearwater Revival fans; no fewer than seven songs here were either written by John Fogerty or covered by CCR during their heyday, one of which lends the album its title. While Los Fugitivos generally remain faithful to the originals, they know how to add their own accents to the tunes, such as the splash of reverb and feedback at the beginning and end of "Amanecer en la Luna" (aka "Bad Moon Rising") and the fuzz bass and percussion that puts a different spin on "El Espiritista" (adapted from the Jaggerz' sole hit "The Rapper"). And most of the time, these guys play with genuine spirit and skill, though they might have wanted to spend more time with Vanity Faire's "Hitchin' a Ride" before they rolled tape, though the keyboard line might have influenced a number of synth-pop acts had they ever heard it. If only for the abundance of Creedence covers, En La Esquina would be an amusing curiosity for fans of Mexican rock of the period, though the band's own likeably skewed vision makes this interesting to a wider variety of consumers of rock esoterica.

THREE O CLOCK MERRIAN WEBSTER TIME - 22 Psych Sounds from Texas. 66-68- SAALE! Label:CICADELIC RECORDS (USA) By the time 1966 ended, many of the groups in Texas that started out playing British Invasion and folk-rock music, were now immersing themselves in the newly emerging psychedelic music. The five groups that comprise this album reflect the changes that occurred during this period and four of them even changed their names to sound more psychedelic. The Nomads became Smoke, Carrols Mood became The Sights And Sounds, The New Imperials became The Front Page News, and The Boys became The Remaining Few. Represented by twelve tracks on this album, The Nomads/Smoke, started out playing folk-rock music, but by 1967 went psychedelic-as witnessed by their “freak-out” version of “My Little Red Book” replete with backwards tapes. “Carrols Mood” went from singing ballads to surreal songs such as “Mystical Bells”. The Front Page News went from the soul of “Baby Let Me Bang Your Box” to the fuzz drenched “Thoughts and Afterthoughts”. If the 13th Floor Elevators were the epitome of what a Texas psychedelic band was, then the groups on this album were not far behind in trying to emulate that state of existence. Here then are twenty-two tracks compiling the changes that occurred from late 1966 to 1968, when the Texas bands went metaphorically speaking from “Kool-Aid” to “Electric Kool-Aid Acid” COMP CD $10 SKU:13278
