ALAN VEGA- AFTER DARK Label:IN THE RED 2021 is shaping up to be the year of Alan Vega. Every year should be but, this year is definitely it. The announcement of the opening of the Alan Vega archives which will be unleashing an untold amount of unreleased material dating back to 1971 via Sacred Bones, the release of Mutator (a lost album from the mid ’90s), which has gained rave reviews, a massive feature in the NY Times…Vega has been celebrated everywhere of late. In The Red is over the moon to participate in this celebration with the release of After Dark—an album that captures a late night rock ’n’ roll session with Vega backed by Ben Vaughn, Palmyra Delran and Barb Dwyer (all members of the incredible Pink Slip Daddy as well as countless other cool projects). This album serves as a reminder that Alan Vega was an incredible rock ’n’ roll / blue / rockabilly vocalist. He was one of the best. CD $10 SKU:26858

DIRTBOMBS - If You Don’t Already Have A Look (double CD)Label:IN THE RED In the nearly ten years The Dirtbombs have existed, a lot of bass players have come and gone, a lot of touring has been logged, and a lot of singles released. Because anybody who gets in touch with Mick Collins and can cough up a small fee for studio time can release a Dirtbombs single, some of the Dirtbombs’ very best tracks have seen the light of day only on seven inches pressed in small quantities (often released in foreign countries) that go out of print almost immediately. Hell, some singles were given to labels that never actually released the damn things. This 52-song double-CD collects Dirtbombs singles sides and comp tracks - including eight brand new songs and several previously unreleased older recordings, all re-mastered. A handsome 24-page booklet of photos and notes by the band augments this massive package. CD $10 SKU:26855

DIVINE HORSEMEN-- Bitter End Of A Sweet NightLabel:IN THE RED The renaissance of Divine Horsemen—which began in 2021 with In The Red’s release of Hot Rise Of An Ice Cream Phoenix, the legendary Los Angeles punk band’s first release in 33 years—continues with a thrilling and unexpected new album, Bitter End Of A Sweet Night. The new sixteen-track collection again features the band’s co-founding members, singers-songwriters Chris Desjardins (better known as Chris D.) and Julie Christensen, and the core members of the ferocious Hot Rise band—guitarist / co-writer Peter Andrus (a member of the group’s late ’80s lineup), bassist Bobby Permanent and X’s nonpareil drummer DJ Bonebrake. The sound is filled out by Green On Red and Dream Syndicate keyboardist Chris Cacavas (who appeared on the 1984 Chris D. / Divine Horsemen album Time Stands Still) and classically trained violinist Elizabeth Wilson. Desjardins produced the album. CD $10 SKU:26854

FUZZ -ST -TY SEGALL- Label:IN THE RED If you are not already aware of Segall, well, what’s up? He’s one of garage rock’s most prolific sons. He said he was going to take it easy this year, but by the time you finish reading this, the onesheet for his next record will have already arrived in your inbox. Moothart plays guitar in The Ty Segall Band and was also a member of The Moonhearts, which included Cosio on guitar. Way back in the early ’00s, all three played in the Epsilons.Fuzz was formed a couple years ago as a collaboration between Segall and Moothart, but only recently did the pair have sufficient time to guide the band out of side-project limbo and into a recording studio. Since then, they have released two singles, “This Time I Got a Reason” (Trouble In Mind) and “Sleigh Ride” (In The Red). Around the time of the latter, Cosio joined on bass.
They are not dabblers or dilettantes. Fuzz flipped through used bins, hard drives and record collections of the world, seeking out the finest weirdo cuts. The band’s self-titled debut LP, which was recorded by Chris Woodhouse (Thee Oh Sees, The Intelligence), dives deep, drawing inspiration from the more esoteric reaches of heavy metal pre-history. There are Sabbath and Hendrix nods, obviously, but on “Sleigh Bells” you might also catch a whiff of UK progressive blues business like The Groundhogs, particularly when the song quits its 10/4-time intro and reboots into full-bore choogle. Maybe you’ll even glimpse the ghost of Australian guitar legend / sharpie guru Lobby Lloyde sniffing around “Raise.” CD $10 SKU:26852

JAY REATARD-- SINGLES 06-07-Label:IN THE RED By now, the late Jay Reatard should be known to most everyone paying any attention to this whole indie / punk / pop / garage / blahblahblah. Former front guy for The Reatards and Lost Sounds as well as a solo sensation, the man was nothing if not prolific. After recording his debut solo LP, 2006’s Blood Visions, Reatard released a slew of singles and EPs on labels across the globe; all were pressed in limited quantities and now fetch serious coin. Re-mastered by the ’Tard himself, Singles 06-07 collections of all his out-of-print non-album tracks from that productive two-year period, making it possible to hear these gems in one straight shot, sounding better than ever, without flipping over a pile of 7-inch platters. The CD version of Singles 06-07 includes a live DVD showcasing some choice performances of Reatard and his incredible live backing band. CD $10 SKU:26861

JON SPENCER & THE HITMAKERS-- GETS IT LIT-Label:IN THE RED The incredible, indelible Jon Spencer (Blues Explosion, Boss Hog, Pussy Galore, Heavy Trash, etc) is back with the incendiary HITmakers—and with his hottest record yet! Spencer Gets It Lit is classic Jon Spencer taken to the extreme—electro-boogie, constructivist art pop, and a psychedelic swamp of industrial sleaze and futurist elegance. It is an epic master work of freak beat from the world’s weirdest garage. Across brain-boggling layers of fury, fuzz guitar, and a crash-bang battery of phaser blasts, photon torpedoes, and otherworldly zounds, he frantically spits, croons, rhapsodizes, and seduces. Spencer Gets It Lit is his most complex and groovy record in years, a dark, danceable odyssey—both a studied take-down of the early 21st century, and a celebration of the place where electricity meets the mind. Thirteen wicked hot songs of love, loss, lust, life—from the Farfisa-fueled, warped psycho-punk rave-up of “Junk Man,” to the intimate lover’s plea of “My Hit Parade,” to the outer-space, end-of-days country funk of “Worm Town,” Spencer Gets It Lit delivers all of the friction, excitement, and post-modern depravity one could ever ask for!
Says Spencer, “Send out the Hit Signal! This is the most uncompromising album I’ve ever made!” CD $10 SKU:26850

KID CONGO & the Near Death Experience Live In St. Kilda-Label:IN THE RED Live In St. Kilda is a twelve song live album from a one-time-only show in which Kid Congo Powers was backed by The Near Death Experience. Kid Congo says, “How did I hook up with The Near Death Experience you may ask? One fine day Kim Salmon, my long time Scientists Surrealist Beast of a friend, wrote from Australia to ask me to play at his book launch for his biography Nine Parts Water, One Part Sand: Kim Salmon And The Formula For Grunge on November 9th, 2019. The launch was to take place at the Memo Music Hall in St. Kilda, a seaside suburb of Melbourne. A royal command performance for the king of Kim? How could I say no to such an honor? What to do about a band? It did not take more than a minute for each of us to suggest Harry Howard and The Near Death Experience as the logical choice. I was a massive fan of the band already and we shared crossed paths as expats claiming out our musical in 1980s London. Harry with Crime And The City Solution and These Immortal Souls, Dave and Clare with The Moodists, Kim with the Scientists and me with Gun Club and Fur Bible. Needless to say it was fantastical to get together and make a playlist for Kim featuring covers by Suicide and Shangri-La, with mine and NDE’s songs as well. The night was magic—I still am floating on a surrealistic pillow remembering the night. Enjoy the racket, enjoy the love, enjoy this record of friendship and celebration.” CD $10 SKU:26848

MEATBODIES -ST Loud, fast, wild W FUZZ CONNECTIONS-Label:IN THE RED Loud, fast, wild—you’ve heard this all before but you haven’t because the Meatbodies are brand new and they’re going to dominate your eyes and ears and give you a bangover like you’ve never had before. Meatbodies initially came about as a solo project for Chad Ubovich after spending the last several years touring in other groups: In 2011, he was recruited by his friend Mikal Cronin to play bass, and eventually guitar, in Cronin’s band’s first ever tour. While Cronin strummed his twelve-string to his future classic pop songs, Ubovich howled alongside, adding his own brand of wolf-man style to Cronin’s live show. Heavy super-group Fuzz took notice of his on-stage prowess and recruited him to deliver Geezer Butler-style bass riffs that could propel Charles Moothart and Ty Segall’s songs through the stratosphere. While both of these bands have kept him busy over the past few years, his mind was always on his own songs. He would come home and secretly work on his own material—explosive, crunching, grinding songs with soaring melodies and gentle bridges cascading into torrents of riffs. Eventually he shared his work and allowed Segall to put out a tape of his bedroom recordings on his label God? Records. The tape was well received, so Ubovich recruited several friends with whom he could play around Los Angeles and San Francisco, and people began to see that he was more than just a sideman to his heavy-hitting comrades. Eventually, In the Red took notice and the Meatbodies were added to their roster. Sequestering himself in master studio magician Eric “King Riff” Bauer’s San Francisco studio / psychedelic sanctuary, Ubovich busted out an album’s worth of songs, barely leaving the small Technicolor underground quarters. Once the tracks were done, he sent them up to Chris Woodhouse to give them just the right final touches of perfectly controlled chaos. And perfectly controlled chaos is what this trifecta delivered. The self-titled record is a sonic experience truly evocative of its creator: Unabashed, unrestrained, beautiful and strange. Riffs for days. It’s everything we’ve come to expect from Chad Ubovich. CD $10 SKU:26853

OBLIVIONS- DESPERATION- (soulful punk-garage-blues trash rock)Label:IN THE RED In The Red is proud to announce the release of The Oblivians’ first studio full-length album from since 1997’s ...Play Nine Songs with Mr. Quintron. Desperation picks up right where the band left off, delivering fourteen scorching tracks of soulful punk-garage-blues trash rock informed in equal parts by ’50s rock ’n’ roll, ’60s garage rock, Memphis soul, Delta blues and Killed By Death-style punk. There’s even a Cajun Zydeco cover here! As Greg Oblivian puts it, “Between our last record as a band in ’97 and now, a lot of water has passed below that bridge. We three went our own ways after that and pursued our own musical goals. Personally, I often missed the dynamic that Jack and Eric offered to my songwriting. Almost as much as I missed being given carte blanche to add a thing or two to theirs. I’ve played with lots of great musicians in the interim but needless to say, it’s a hard itch to scratch. The dynamic between us was a singular thing. So, over the years as we would occasionally reunite for a festival or special occasion, the idea began to grow in the back of my mind—the idea of making a new record. I mean, if you’re going to keep playing as a band eventually you’ll want new songs to play. Because as much as we enjoyed playing together the thing I missed the most was creating together. So that’s what we did.” CD $10 SKU:26857

OSEES-- Intercepted Message Label:IN THE RED “A pop record for tired times. Sugared with bits of shatterproof glass to put more crack in your strap. At long last, verse / chorus. A weathered thesaurus. This is OSEES bookend sound. Early grade garage pop meets proto-synth punk suicide-repellant. Have a whack at the grass or listen while flat on your ass. Heaps of electronic whirling accelerants to gum up your cheapskate broadband. Social media toilet scrapers unite! Allow your 24-hour news cycle eyes to squint at this smiling abattoir doorman. You can find your place here at long last. All are welcome from the get go to the finale…a distant crackling transmission of 80s synth last-dance-of-the-night tune for your lost loves. Suffering from Politic amnesia? Bored of AI-generated pop slop? Then this one is for you, our friends. Wasteland wanderer, stick around. Love y’all. For fans of Teutonic synth punk and Thee Oh Sees (who the fuck are they?)" —John Dwyer CD $10 SKU:26846

PAUL B CUTLER - Les Fleurs-The Consumers, 45 Grave, Vox Pop and The Dream Syndicate-Label:IN THE RED Fans of the innovations and originality that sprang from the L.A. underground of the late 1970s and ’80s often ask, “What’s Paul B. Cutler been up to?” A vital participant in the Los Angeles music scene of that period as bandleader, songwriter, musician and producer, Cutler’s work—in particular his guitar playing—with The Consumers, 45 Grave, Vox Pop and The Dream Syndicate is still admired by fans and an influence on anyone interested in that period and the styles that developed from it. In 2014, “Ryan Adams contacted me and wanted to form a band. He loved 45 Grave, he wanted to do some goth / punk, whatever you want to call it. That’s right up my alley. He’s amazingly talented and inspiring to work with. We did that for a while, and I wrote a bunch of songs.” Enthused about his new material, Cutler continued recording songs with just his signature electric guitar style and vocals. As this was developing, another vet of the early L.A. scene—Brad Laner of Medicine and Savage Republic—got in touch with Cutler. Soon Laner was mixing, co-producing, playing keyboards as well as adding the rhythm section. The overall process took some time, with songwriting beginning in 2014. When reflecting on the music that comprises Les Fleurs, “To me, and it does not sound like it, but because of the philosophy I had while producing it, it’s punk. I come from the original punk, before it was a genre. Before it was a ‘sound.’ When I got to LA in 1977 there were about twenty, maybe thirty bands and they all sounded very different. The Screamers, The Deadbeats, so many different takes on what music could be. There was no chance for commercial success so we all just did what we wanted. I never stopped. So philosophically I consider this punk rock, made in its original spirit although nobody would recognize it as such. I am a punk to this day.” So that, dear reader, is the basic story. Now it’s up to you to see what you recognize in Paul B. Cutler’s Les Fleurs. CD $10 SKU:26851

SKULL PRACTITIONERS -Negative Stars- early ’80s L.A. dusty punk like Gun Club, X and Flesh EatersLabel:IN THE RED “If you dig early ’80s L.A. dusty punk like Gun Club, X and Flesh Eaters, or the many works of Jon Spencer, you will want to check out these four ripping, ripped-up tracks.” Hard-hitting new collection succeeds the trio’s rampaging 2019 In The Red Debut EP Death Buy! Proving once again that “power trio” isn’t just a descriptive handle from the distant past but a louder-than-God 21st-Century reality, the devastating New York band Skull Practitioners bow Negative Stars, their first full-length album for In The Red Records. The eight-track collection is the second release for Los Angeles-based trio—guitarist Jason Victor (Dream Syndicate), bassist Kenneth Levine, and drummer Alex Baker—who collectively produced the record, with Ted Young engineering (and Baker handling engineering on vocal sessions).
Brooklyn Vegan said, “If you dig early ’80s L.A. dusty punk like Gun Club, X and Flesh Eaters, or the many works of Jon Spencer, you will want to check out these four ripping, ripped-up tracks.” Rock And Roll Globe described the music as “Gun Club fugues played by anxious Amphetamine Reptile Records ghosts deciding they’d prefer to continue to walk the earth.” CD $10 SKU:26849

TAV FALCO PANTHER BURNS-PANTHER PHOBIA -Label:IN THE RED The latest from Memphis' long, long-running garage legends—twenty-one years and counting, and the missing link between the unbridled howl of early swamp blues and the psychological onslaught of the new millennium. "Recorded and mixed in Memphis by Mssrs. JEFFREY EVANS and DOUG EASLEY, Panther Phobia heralds a return to the tumultuous and exuberant tones and groans of the band's landmark first LP Behind The Magnolia Curtain. The music is organic, like a landlord's eviction squad. Drums pound like irate neighbors at the door. Slow songs snake like a chick passing out on 'ludes. You will lock your doors when you hear this record, you will bar your windows , blood will flow from your nose, your lungs will itch. You will get a divorce, a speeding ticket, eleven twenty nine in the workhouse." —Robert Gordon CD $10 SKU:26862

TY SEGALL- FUDGE SANDWICH- Label:IN THE RED Take a tour through Ty Segall’s musical psyche with his new solo album, Fudge Sandwich, a collection of Segall’s take on eleven songs that were originally done by other people. These aren’t just cover versions. Cover versions happen at weddings and high school band battles. The songs here are what happens when someone loves a song so much, they need to get inside it and let it propagate and transform into what it would have been if they had actually written it.
Equal parts reverence and reimagination, this album shows Segall inhabiting the world of a song’s intent, filtering it through the muse that drove this year’s exceptional Freedom’s Goblin. Cluttered, passionate and inspired, the songs are barely recognizable, irresistible and by album’s end, present a cohesive collection that stands proudly alongside the best of Segall’s considerable output. CD $10 SKU:26859

TY SEGALL BAND- SLAUGHTERHOUSE -Label:IN THE RED Received an 8.7 Best New Music rating from Pitchfork. A reissue of the 2012 debut release by the Ty Segall Band on In The Red, featuring a bonus song not on the original release! The Ty Segall Band is Ty Segall (obviously), Mikal Cronin, Charlie Moonheart and Emily Rose Epstein. While Segall has released many incredible solo releases, Slaughterhouse marks the first time he recorded with his touring band. For this mini-album (originally released as a double 10-inch, but now expanded to a double 12-inch) the band recorded with Chris Woodhouse at the Hangar, turned their amps all the way up, set their fuzz pedals on “obliterate” and commenced to kick ass and take names. Seriously, this record will melt your face. All of Segall’s usual psych-pop sensibilities are present but Slaughterhouse adds the full-throttle, go-for-the-throat bombast that the band delivers in the live setting. The fuzz riffs, bratty howl and Cro-Magnon bashing culminate with a feedback freakout that’s clearly the only sensible way to end a workout of this magnitude in shit to announce the debut release by the Ty Segall Band. CD $10 SKU:26860

WOLFMANHATTAN PROJECT - Summer Forever and Ever DIRTBOMBS /GUN CLUB/CRAMPS MEMBERS-Label:IN THE RED Summer Forever And Ever succeeds Blue Gene Stew, 2019’s debut by the Wolfmanhattan Project, a collective unit co-starring three musicians familiar to In The Red listeners: singer-guitarist Mick Collins, front man of the seminal Detroit-bred garage units the Dirtbombs and the Gories, singer-guitarist Kid Congo Powers who played in such legendary bands as the Gun Club, the Cramps, and Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, and drummer-vocalist Bob Bert, whose skin work has distinguished albums by Sonic Youth, Pussy Galore, Lydia Lunch’s Retrovirus, and Jon Spencer and the HITmakers. The group was founded as a studio project by three musicians who are kept busy by their primary bands. Blue Gene Stew was written and recorded quickly. Powers says, “I think that the new record was much more a group effort. I think there’s more of a group kind of sound, as eclectic as it is. I feel like we all played together, as opposed to playing on each other’s songs.” Bert notes that the band’s music is grounded in spontaneity: “Me and Mick went in and had a couple of rehearsals, and I would come up with a beat, he would come up with a riff. I still have a cassette Walkman, believe it or not, and we’d put it down on that. It wasn’t even a full song. We’d just put down a bunch of ideas. When it came to recording we’d lay down the basic tracks and work out different things, and a lot of it was made up on the spot. It really is a great collaboration.” Recorded and engineered by Mark C. of Live Skull at his studio, Summer Forever And Ever finds Powers playing piano and the Kaoss touch-pad effects unit and Collins playing synthesizer, in addition to their usual instruments. The album reflects the same eclectic mix of musical styles heard on the debut. References and sometimes even direct quotes from sources as diverse as the Andrea True Connection, Captain Beefheart, the Count Five, and Eurythmics leap out of the speakers. CD $10 SKU:26847

ARONDIES- Introducing (60s teen garage)-Label:GET HIP Here ‘tis: the long-awaited and complete retrospective of one of the finest teenage garage bands to emerge from Steel Country in the 1960s! he Arondies formed in late 1962 in Clairton, Pennsylvania. The young band struck a hit in 1965 with the help of local DJ Terry Lee: the flawless instrumental track “69.” Beautiful vocal ballads like “All My Love” followed, becoming favorites at the many dances they played. An endless cycle of shows, personal appearances, and shrieking girls proceeded. This was (briefly) Pittsburgh’s personal version of Beatlemania. CD $10 SKU:22324

COLLINS , PAUL BEAT - KIDS ARE THE SAME (NERVES / BREAKAWAYS )-Label:COLUMBIA Paul Collins Beat’s second album followed in the footsteps of his brilliant debut to rave reviews, an apathetic record company and a clueless public. Despite featuring some of his greatest songs – “The Kids are the Same,” “On The Highway,” “Dreaming,” “I Will Say No” – Columbia Records dropped the band as they toured relentlessly while “On The Highway” poured out of FM radio airwaves across the country and the newly launched MTV channel aired the videos for “The Kids Are The Same” and “On The Highway.” CD $15 SKU:22904

CREATURES OF THE GOLDEN DAWN-AN INCIDENT AT OWL CR EEK (mid-60s garage-rock style) -Label:GET HIP Creatures of the Golden Dawn, have spent the last dozen or so years digesting such mid-60s garage-rock gems as the Seeds, the Elevators, the Watchband and plenty of more obscure garagedom. After albums on Dionysus and Collectables in the í90s the band went to hiatus. This fantastic new album marks their return, more energetic and rocking than ever. This album features a mix of covers (including a tune by the Lyres!), and originals thatíll put a smile on your face! A must for fans of Cynics, Lyres and energetic garage rock. CD $10 SKU:23190

DONOVANS BRAIN -TINY CRUSTACEAN LIGHT SHOW (Montana Psych-pop)Label:GET HIP The group, which is loosely based out of Bozeman, Montana, includes guitarist Matt Piucci, late of Rain Parade and – of all things – Crazy Horse; guitarist Bobby Sutliff (Tom Stevens (The Long Ryders) on bass. And if that’s not enough college rock/alterna-cred, the group’s lineup features guitarist Deniz Tek (of American/Australian punk heroes Radio Birdman) and drummer Ric Parnell (better known to rock fans as Mick Shrimpton, spontaneously-combusting drummer for Spinal Tap, and also a member for a time in Atomic Rooster). The group is rounded out by names slightly less well known but of equal musical caliber: founder Ron Sanchez (multiple instruments), Scott Sutherland (many instruments as well), and vocalist Kris Wilkinson Hughes. FREDDY AND THE FOREGONE CONCLUSIONS - WIGGED OUT SOUNDS (Detroit garage punk Question Mark style) Label:GET HIP ARCHIVE In the hallowed halls of Detroit's garage punk legacy, only one man remains committed to the original doctrine layed out by bands like Question Mark and the Mysterians and the Unrelated Segments. That man is Freddy Fortune. Blasting off with Detroit-area chord mashers the Covingtons in 1988, the mid '90s found Fortune in an auspicious pairing with friend and collaborator Michael Maltese. The result, Fortune and Maltese and the Phabulous Pallbearers, would burn a trail of garage punk genius across the U.S. and abroad, spreading the gospel of lo-fi love to rock 'n' roll fans everywhere. Now Fortune returns, once again bearing the torch for of Detroit garage with a new sound and a new ensemble. MAINLINERS-BRING ON THE SWEETLIFE (Stooges' raw exuberance with good old British R&B and a taste of Kinks pop) Label:GET HIP The Mainliners combine the Stooges' raw exuberance with good old British rhythm and blues and a taste of Kinks pop sensibilities, producing an explosive yet soothing sound. Frontman Robert Billing's voice is reminiscent of a young Van Morrison and will surely give the Hives' Howlin' Pelle a run for his money. Such a visceral voice is accented by furious guitar work, trashcan drum beats, and solid bass lines. The Mainliners are not formula rock. Their musical influences go from '60s Them to '70s Mott the Hoople to '80s Sweden garage cult band The Creeps. They're smooth, confident and original, attacking rock 'n' roll with a fuck-all attitude and the songs to back it up! CD $10 SKU:22179

MYSTIC EYES-OUR TIME TO LEAVE! (primal ‘60s garage rock sound.)Label:GET HIP 4 bonus tracks. If ever there was a band that could do justice to a ‘60s folk-rock chestnuts like “Clam Me Down,” it’s the Mystic Eyes. And on this LP, they prove it yet again. “Clam Me Down” is not only faithful to the original in form and delivery, but also recreates the feel of the primal ‘60s garage rock sound. But as good as their take on the Human Expression hit is, it doesn’t compare to the absolutely breathtaking originals that they churn out on this LP. 14 songs in all including a couple choice covers. CD $10 SKU:21822

MYSTIC EYES-Whole World is Watching (primal ‘60s garage rock sound.)Label:GET HIP While each song on Watching is a polished gem, special mention must be given to a few. “Reality Is No Friend of Mine” is an ominous psychedelic pounder, and “So Far Away From Here” is only slightly less intense. While the whole album fits loosely into a modernized folk/rock genre, “I Can’t Wait to Love You” pays loving tribute to the Phil Spector/Jan & Dean sound. CD $10 SKU:22755

NEIGHBOURS - Prime Numbers(early British Invasion crossed with The Beach Boys)Label:GET HIP Prime Numbers captures a sound reminiscent of the early British Invasion crossed with The Beach Boys, leaving you with a feel that it is still mid-July. NERVEBREAKERS - We Want Everything ( 70s Texas punk) - Label:GET HIP Hailing from Dallas, the Nervebreakers first got together in 1973, but didn’t take off until the mid-’70s punk movement started to affect most larger urban areas of the US. Nervebreakers quickly rose to the top of the pack in Dallas releasing three singles which are now hard to find. This album was recorded in 1980 and was to have been their debut LP. The reissue on Get Hip has been remastered and is finally out on vinyl again on 180-gram wax! EV originally released a limited edition along with the Get Hip CD in 1995. CD $10 SKU:11536

NERVEBREAKERS - Hijack the Radio(Anthology of mid to late 70s studio recordings) Label:GET HIP An anthology of mid to late 70s studio recordings, some of which ended up on the Nervebreakers' late-70's 7" vinyl releases on Wild Child Records, some on the 1979 Texas punk LP compilation Are We Too Late For The Trend? (ESR Records), some on a volume of Italian label Rave Up Records series of American Lost Punk Rock Nuggets, and others that have up-to-now never been publicly released. CD $10 SKU:13995

PAYBACKS - KNOCK LOUD (real-deal Detroit R&R ) Label:GET HIP Comprised of Detroit garage veterans (the Hentchmen, Rocket 455, and Ten High), the Paybacks first came to the attention of indie rock fans in 2001 with their inclusion on the compilation The Sympathetic Sounds of Detroit (Sympathy for the Record Industry, SFTRI623). Now they’re out to prove their mettle, and Knock Loud is the manifesto! Grab a 12-pack, crank up the volume, and tell the poseurs and the bullies to get lost! Rock'n'Roll is fun again!! CD $10 SKU:24758

RESONARS - LUNAR KIT(for fans of the Byrds, Love, the Easybeats, Moby Grape and the Hollies) Label:GET HIP Truly brilliant! Since 1999’s Bright and Dark, Resonars guitarist Matt Rendon has refined his one-man band methodology so that the illusion of a four-piece combo is practically impenetrable. On this, their third LP, Rendon seems to have absorbed every significant guitar-style and sound between George Harrison’s Rick of ‘63 and Peter Green’s Les Paul of ‘69. But those are just the building blocks. Along with the spot-on harmonies, you might hear various echoes–but these are not pastiches. They are truly classic rock n’ roll tunes!! CD $10 SKU:24735

BEYOND THE CALICO WALL V/A (Excellent 60s acid-punk sampler) Label:VOXX LAST PRESSING of classic 60s psych! We thought this one was out of print, but found a few jackets at the pressing plant Excellent acid-punk sampler put together by New England collector Erik L. Issued fairly late in the game but recycling lots of weird psych numbers for the first time. A few tracks fall into the pointless-noise/novelty category but overall this was one of the best comps of the early 90s. All of the pieces are unbridled master strokes of the proto-punk D.I.Y. mentality married to the equally inspired garage rock psych of the mid- to late '60s. In a significant nod to collectors, none of these sides can be found on run-of-the-mill "best-of" anthologies, and there are only a mere handful that are available in any other incarnation. The material ranges from highly infectious pop melodies such as Duffy's spry rocker "Come Back Come Back" or the speed-fueled madness of the Waterproof Tinkertoy's trippy "Continuation." There are also a fair amount of indescribably acidic and downright far-out cuts, including the repetitive "Suzie's Gone" by the Afterglow and the rambling of Ceylib People's "Changes." In addition to the plethora of unearthed gems, Beyond the Calico Wall features a few familiar titles -- such as the faithfully extended 11-plus minute reworking of "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" from 6 Feet Under as well as Rasputin & the Mad Monks' jet-propelled rendering of "I Had Too Much to Dream (Last Night)." Bhagavad Gita includes a mid-tempo distortion-driven electric guitar wailer titled "Long Hair Soulful," which was co-written by Chuck Mangione -- who included his version on his Eyes of the Veiled Temptress (1988). It is unknown if the famed jazz flügelhorn player was once a member of this Ohio-based band. COMP LP $20 SKU:21917

KNUCKLE GIRLS-Vol 3- 14 Territorial Turf War Tunes from the Tomboy Goons in Split-Knee Loons)Label:ANGRY YOUNG WOMEN An extract from the novel 'Bovver Birds Rool' (...continued)Dawn's preferred nickname was "Demolition Girl." Or, "Demolition Dawn," if needs must. She would never answer to just plain old "Dawn," though. "Dawn" was completely out. She was tired of blokes asking if they could see her "crack," for a start. That was never funny, to Dawn. Or the blokes, after they'd said it and got their comeuppance. And then there was Jane. Her friends called her "Jane Pain," because she liked to inflict it on her enemies in lethal doses. Her enemies called her "Plain Jane," which she wasn't, but she was hardly the Daily Mirror's wartime glamour girl Jane, either. A one-girl war? Yeah, sometimes. Especially if you were one of the chancers attempting to call her "Plain." Or, if you were attempting to cause aggro for her beloved Dawn. And these were The Knuckle Girls. Well, two of them, anyway. The others were many but lesser-spotted, like their Bovver Bird adversaries, unless there was a crisis, which was most weeks. Most days, sometimes. Friday nights were the worst. (To be continued...)
