SLOW GRIND FEVER - #3 Yet More (Adventures in the sleazy world of POPCORN NOIR 53-63 )Label:STAG-O-LEE (GERMANY) Stag-O-Lee presents the third volume of Slow Grind Fever, compiled by Richie1250 and subtitled YET MORE... Adventures in the sleazy world of POPCORN NOIR... The decade between 1953 and 1963 offers an endless supply of danceable, up-tempo tunes. We're talking rhythm 'n' blues, and the phase in the early '60s when it morphed into soul (now called new breed), as well as popcorn -- Belgian music with a mid-tempo style and a high groove-factor. The Slow Grind Fever series highlights the slower side of this period, and takes its title and inspiration from an Australian club night billed as "Melbourne's only slow dance party." These events would include only the "slowest, spookiest, sweetest records" the DJs could find, with folks dancing "real slow in a haze of smoke and dim red light." Stag-O-Lee was convinced that this was a great concept for a compilation series, and have collaborated with those behind the Melbourne club night to present Slow Grind Fever, the third volume of which includes tracks by The Notes, The El Torros, Eddie Cooley & The Dimples, Isley Brothers With Ray Ellis & Orch., Donna Dee, Charlie Williams, Henry Thome, Bob Lee, Little Willie John, Elizabeth Waldo, Bobby Rebel, Jessie Hill, The Flamingos, and Jimmy Scott. SONGS THE CRAMPS TAUGHT US- VARIOUS VOL.4Label:CATO "For many of us with a penchant for raw 50s and 60s garage and rock n roll, the Cramps were our doorway to a whole new world of sleazy guitar music. It didn't matter that they hadn't actually written most of the songs, to paraphrase the band themselves "they had good taste". They'd tracked down these amazing old records, reworked some of them, merged others and stamped them boldly as their own. Many different comps have appeared over the years that have gathered the original source of the Cramps trash genius. This brilliant series gathers much of what's previously appeared but adds a few more gems too.
Imagine the songs of the Cramps, dripping sleaze and spoof horror and then strip back some of the campness and modern production techniques and you'll get an idea of the raw sound of most of the material on these LPS. COMP LP $16 SKU:18111

PIP PROUD - A FRAYING SPACE w liners and lyrics SALE -Label:EM RECORDS (JAPAN) Pip Proud, sui generis, could be considered an Australian outsider, with his untutored and uninhibited singing style, his primal guitar playing, his resolutely personal vision captured on recordings from 1967 to the early 70s - except that, unlike most outsiders, he was loved and accepted, with two of his three album releases on a major label, with frequent television appearances and coverage in music magazines. Heralded in his native land though he was, he maintained a low profile from the early 70s, never made an impact overseas, and his recordings have been difficult to access. This collection has been selected by Proud's biographer David Nichols and will engender a new appreciation of Proud's music. Considered by some as a sort of Antipodean Syd Barrett, listeners will hear that Pip was clearing his own private and primal path, more poet than pop star, despite the media attention. Other than one Velvets-style band track, all songs here feature Pip solo, some with appealingly primitive overdubs. Fans of ramshackle oddball weirdo portastudio lofi bedroom pop of the 80s, 90s and beyond, whether of the NZ, UK or US varieties, will find a precursor here. 'A Fraying Space' also features liner notes by David Nichols as well as Proud's lyrics. LP $18 SKU:16094

PURLING HISS- Lounge Lizards Live At Cantones, Boston 1982 ( psych pop ) Label:MEXICAN SUMMER "After a series of three LPs which alternated between mind's eye-gouging psychedelic excess and pine-scented woodshedding of pop tunes, here comes the logical endpoint between both: Lounge Lizards, six songs that stick around like sedan carpet matted with spilled Pepsi and Pat's wrappers, a hard drill that penetrates historical musical hits, like the Cars through Dinosaur Jr through Monoshock and into the cold, acrid air of present times." BLACK KEYS - Rubber Factory 180 gram -Label:FAT POSSUM 2004 release, the third album from the acclaimed Alt-Rock/Blues duo. Rubber Factory continues the Black Keys' tradition of raw, heavily blues-influenced indie rock. Rubber Factory was recorded in an abandoned coal burning power plant in the Black Keys' hometown of Akron, Ohio, and like Thickfreakness, was recorded and produced by Patrick Carney. BRAINBOX- Dark Rose(60s Dutch psych) Label:PSEUDONYM It comes packaged in a magnificent gatefold-cover with rare photos and liner-notes including exclusive interview material. Remastered in the 24-bit domain from the original master tapes. Brainbox was something special. The band not only featured some of the Netherlands' most preternaturally talented musicians, but in less than three years they produced a recorded legacy that was truly world class. Much of their best work appeared on their 1969-71 singles, which have been compiled on this definitive 2-LP collection, pressed on 180gm vinyl and dynamically re-mastered from the original tapes. The original lineup with lead-guitarist Jan Akkerman, bassist Andr Reijnen, drummer Pierre van der Linden and vocalist extraordinaire Kaz Lux deliver the goods on pile-driving blues rock songs like 'Down Man' and 'Dark Rose,' and the hard-hitting Hendrix-inspired rocker 'Amsterdam, The First Days' -- all presented in their original mono mixes. After Akkermans departure, Brainbox expanded its musical palette with guitarists Rudy de Queljoe (ex-Dragonfly) and John Schuursma (ex-Rob Hoekes R&B Group), recording memorable tracks like 'Between Alpha And Omega,' 'Doomsday Train,' 'Mobilae' and the blisteringly powerful 'Virgin.' Dark Rose / Their 45s also includes previously unreleased demo-versions of 'Virgin,' 'Dark Rose' and the epic 'Sea Of Delight.' LP $32 SKU:14720

Produced by 'Green Tambourine' hit maker Paul Leka, the album that followed featured 10 more slices of juicy bubblegum pop including a second Top 10 smash, 'Don't Wake Me Up In The Morning, Michael.' The band cut two further singles both added here but by late '69s it was all over as the sound of love faded from the airwaves. First time on CD in the UK for this bubblegum classic. Re-mastered by Norman 'I'll 'ave you Butler' Blake. Liner notes by popmeister supreme Duglas T. Stewart! Lovely packaging by Pepperbox. PINEAPPLES -Twice On the Pipe (Underground NY)- Label:WICKED APE Downtown New York City in the early '90s was a magical place and time for rock music, with a burgeoning scene and hip clubs galore. Striding like conquering giants into this fertile milieu came THE PINEAPPLES, whose gigs inspired the reverence of fans and other musicians alike. They took the scene by storm, sharing the stages of CBGBs, Maxwell’s, the Knitting Factory and Brownie’s with the likes of Hole, Helmet, Sonic Youth, Lunachicks, White Zombie – hell, even Juliana Hatfield. They had a single that got raves in NME (single of the week); Melody Maker said of their Kramer-produced 'Cocahuates' EP, "it definitely places The Pineapples in that exclusive but growing category of US underground bands heading overground..." But they didn't. Not yet, anyway. It’s a new century, and The Pineapples have, at long last, returned to save us all. LP $12 SKU:19261

PLASTIC CRIMEWAVE SYNDICATE- ST (heavy 60s style psych)COLOR VINYL -Label:SWORDFISH (England) Limited edition of 300 copies on coloured vinyl in heavy duty 1960's USA style tip-on sleeve. Chicago's Plastic Crimewave Syndicate is led by Plastic Crimewave aka Steve Krakow on guitar and vocals, creator of the beloved psychedelic magazine Galactic Zoo Dossier (published by Drag City) and former head of Plastic Crimewave Sound, who toured with Comets on Fire, Acid Mothers Temple, and Oneida, and released several LPs which were acclaimed in the Wire magazine, Mojo, and even by head-druid Julian Cope. The new Syndicate configuration is filled out by bassist Anjru Kettering, formerly of windy city acid-rawk gods the Great Society Mind Destroyers; Dawn Aquarius on synth, who was part of Herbcraft and Cursillistas, Brainshadows and Oracle Offering; and Jose Bernal, who has pounded the skins for Bionic Cavemen and Dead Feathers as well. PCWSyndicate has opened for Loop, Hawkwind, Keiji Haino, and backed Djin Aquarian of Ya Ho Wa 13, plus played gigs with younger psych acts like Woods, Purling Hiss and Quilt---and toured the USA. Now their debut LP hits on the Birmingham, UK label Swordfish, home to luminaries like Roky Erickson, Acid Mothers Temple and YHW13. Recorded by Brian Sulpizio (Health and Beauty, Ryely Walker Band) at the swank analog Minbal studios in Chicago, PCWSyndicate were allowed to explore the outer dimensions of their sound. PLEASE -Seeing Stars 68 UK psych TWEAKED COVER BARGAIN! Label:ACME Still shrink wrapped, but there is about a 2" area of seam damage, doesnt look split all the way thru but you can see a white area on the seam. The eleven cuts on Seeing Stars had never even seen the light of day until this CD was put out by Acme. Members of Please were apparently later in a couple of other bands, Bulldog Breed and T2. Some of these tracks remind me of early Pink Floyd, pretty much because of the keyboard arrangements, like "Words To Say", "Before", the wailing "Still Dreaming" (possibly the disc's best tune), "Secrets", "Who You Know" and "But". I thought "Time Goes By" had the characteristics of perhaps an early unreleased King Crimson B-side. Seeing Stars has nicely-done vocals, soaring mellotron, fluid guitar work and cleverly constructed songs to offer it's listeners. It's so good that on the first listen you'll fully understand as to why ' true psychedelia' has never really died, if you don't already.Truly great early British psych that gets better with each play. Line-up: Peter Dunton - keyboards, lead vocals & drums, Bernie Jinks - bass & backing vocals and Nick Spenser - drums. Should appeal to fans of early Floyd, Tomorrow, The Move, Yes, solo Syd Barrett and The Doors. A real keeper. Reviewed by Mike Reed LP $12 SKU:18760

POPPEES -Pop Goes The Anthology (ltd ed ORANGE vinyl powerpop ) -Label:BOMP The Poppees were one of the creators and the embodiment of what soon came to be known as the "Power Pop" sound of the late 70s. This long overdue anthology finally gives this notable and highly underrated band its due, elegantly chronicling the Poppees short but influential role in the history of the New York New Wave scene of the late 70's. While anchored around their two classic Bomp singles, "If She Cries/Love of The Loved" (the latter track produced by Craig Leon of the Ramones fame), and "Jealousy/She's Got It" (produced by Cyril Jordan of the Flamin' Groovies), "Pop Goes The Anthology" features never before released recordings, including demos, early live recordings, and culminating with a rip-roaring live performance at CBGB. It is complete with liner notes and unpublished photos. "After all, what would be more punk at that time than being in the Poppees - a band that emulated the early Beatles, from their moptops to their Cuban heels?" - WFMUFormed in In the mid-'70s in New York by Bob Waxman, Arthur Alexander, Paddy Lorenzo, and Donny Jackrel, later replaced by Jet Harris. PREVOST, GREG "STACKHOUSE”-UNIVERSAL VAGRANT-((Stones,Yardbirds ,NY Dolls style).)Label:MEAN DISPOSITION After a career lasting close to four decades, it was only two years ago when Greg decided to launch his first solo record: the celebrated "Mississippi Murderer”, an album where Delta blues and hi-energy R&R were combined in a masterful mix heavily influenced by the likes of the Stones, the Yardbirds and NY Dolls. This recording has become a cult classic, but the ever adventurous Prevost is now back with a brand new artifact: "Universal Vagrant". This second album goes one step further than his previous waxing and can be safely described as the best recording in his long and illustrious career. It also confirms what those in the know already knew: the fact that Prevost is a top-notch songwriter, one of the coolest R&R singers ever, and that he has a deep understanding of the roots of his music...be them the original blues greats ("Moanin' The Blues", "Mean Red Spider"); the personal idols inscribed in his DNA, Keith Richards and Johnny Thunders ("Gin Soaked Time Warp", "Shot of Rock and Roll", or the superb, gospel-oriented "Lord Shine a Light on Me"), as well as the dark, dangerous Stooges-infused sounds ("Evil On My Mind" or his killer version of "Codine"). Here you have the results: a perfect production, an explosive sound, a recording cooked with ease and among friends, but with edge, attitude and sheer class. This is a first rate R&R album where all pieces fit neatly. No mean feat. LP $16 SKU:18291

While touring the US and Europe, Prima Donna was in and out of the studio numerous times, both at home in L.A. and in Milan, Italy. QUICK, BILL - MARAVILLOSA GENTE(70s obscure psych gem) -Label:TIME LAG Pressed on 180 gm audiophile grade vinyl, and limited to 1000 copiesDeluxe LP reissue of amazing little know gem (entitled “beautiful people”) from 1972. Born in Miami to an American father and Venezuelan mother, Bill split the USA and went to Madrid, Spain in the early 70s. Once there, he landed a recording deal with famous producer Alain Milhaud for the Explosion label, and set to work on this, his sole album. Sessions included an impressive cast of players in the studio, including Salvador Dominguez & Chema Pellicó (from Cerebrum), Jess Lam (Jess & James), and Frank Rojas (Sangre). One of the album’s real hidden treasures, though, was the assistance of unknown Texan Mark Gottschall, who co-wrote the title track and adds perfect vocal harmonies as well a second acoustic guitar. The album has an air of mystical psychedelia, and there's a real sun-blasted quality to it all that makes you want to crank the volume. The lyrics (all in English) feel deeply sincere; when combined with Quick’s unique voice, unusual accent, and loose delivery, it makes for one hell of a cool record. Reissued here for the first time, with the collaboration of original producer Milhaud. packaged in a heavy weight gloss coated exact reproduction of the original cover, including the original double sided insert, as well as a huge new full color foldout insert which reproduces at nearly full size the Brazilian version of the album art. Extensive notes by Salvador Dominguez, Mark Gottschall, and Alex Carretero (Guerssen Records, Spain). Art includes rare picture sleeves 45s, promotional inserts, lyric sheets; the LP labels reproduce the original psychedelic full color Explosion label art. LP $17 SKU:19296

RAUNCH - Total Raunch (savage '60s garagepunk)-Label:BREAK A WAY The Raunch from Ossining, N.Y. were one of the countless mid-'60s groups born into a healthy local garage scene, living the classic story of local bands for two years and then almost forgotten for the last five decades. In the short time of their existence, the Raunch released a legendary 7-inch, made it with one track onto the collectable "Battle Of The Bands" LP on the regionally active Ren-Vell Label and in 1967 recorded another until now unreleased pair of tracks. Both sides of their sole single on Bazaar Records, are good examples of classic '60s garagepunk. 'A Little While Back' is a crude heavy fuzz punker with a blistering guitar solo perfectly backed with 'I Say You're Wrong', a tough n moody song with the classic garage girl-treats-boy-bad lyrics on the flip. While both sides of the 7-inch were group originals written by Sandy Katz, their LP contribution for Ren-Vell was a cover of Paul Revere & The Raiders' 'Hungry', played by the group in their unique "raunchy style" of course. Even more unique is the treatment the boys gave to their unreleased recordings of 'Hey Joe' and 'Tobacco Road'. Again recorded at Ren-Vell in 1967, both covers are unbelievable ultra heavy fuzz killers with a wild brand of slashing and uncompromising guitar playing. Despite losing several battle of the bands contests, their ultimate victory comes in the shape of this one-sided Break-A-Way release. Five tracks with enough excitement and power for two LP sides, all of which are '60s savage garage punk and, once heard, unforgettable. LP $14 SKU:16485
