LIGHTNING STRIKING- Lenny Kaye Presents -SEALED DOUBLE CD -Label:ACE Two CDs. There are probably fewer pundits more qualified to opine upon popular music's past than Lenny Kaye. A keen observer of, and participant within, rock music's continued manifestations since it's birth pangs in the early 1950s, Kaye's deep knowledge, erudite analysis and infectious enthusiasm for the many tributaries whence and to where this behemoth of popular culture has flowed is something any aficionado should pay attention to. There is no better place to start than Lightning Striking, Kaye's new book that is part history, part memoir and one hundred percent engaging from start to finish. Like the book, it is a mixture of the familiar but essential and the fascinatingly unpredictable: in other words, not dissimilar to Kayes's curatorial triumph of yore Nuggets, the compilation that established the garage rock genre. The earliest entry is the Boswell Sisters' 1934 prophetic 'Rock And Roll', the most recent 'Gimme Chocolate!!" by hard rock/J-Pop hybrid Babymetal. In-between we hear a nuanced selection of the finest vintage R&B, pop, psychedelia, punk rock and heavy metal, from an intriguingly diverse selection of bedfellows. The sound quality is second to none, with plenty of ear-wrenching rarities - for instance, the unissued stereo take of the MC5's blitzkrieg 'Looking At You' peels paint faster than even the original mono A-Square single. Not to mention curios like 'Crazy Like A Fox', the author's very own 1966 "nugget if you dug it". Yes, "Lightning Striking" is the perfect companion to the tale Lenny tells, but it is also an energizing, inspiring listen in of itself, and a reminder once again of the life-affirming power of the music we all know and love. Hail, hail rock'n'roll! CD $25 SKU:25713

PRIMA DONNA- VINYL CUTS AND OTHER PIECES2014 RELEASE Label:VALSPEAK Born and raised in the San Fernando Valley on a steady diet of punk and glitter rock CD $5 SKU:25715

THE BROTHERS STEVE-Dose- Label:BIG STIR t's an album of twists and turns and surprises, delights and deception: lead track “Get On Up” opens with an almost lullaby-like acapella harmony passage before exploding into a boisterous, supercharged call to arms for creatures of the night. The closing “Better Get Ready To Go” is cut from the same glam-anthemic cloth, taking unbridled joy in exhorting the listener to “get it on, squeaky Kong,” and “Just put Geppetto to the meadow and let’s get out of here,” it's emblematic of a record that revels unironically in the fundamental absurdity of rock and roll. “We're saying things that may seem to make no sense at all, but we're sincerely convinced of them!” enthuses Whalen. YA GOTTA HAVE MOXIE - Vol 1 - WAREHOUSE FIND - Label:AIP Super rare out of print comp. In the late 1970s and '80s, the Moxie label was famous, or infamous, for its Boulders compilations of obscure '60s garage rock. Boulders was to Pebbles what Pebbles was to Nuggets; an even rawer, more obscure approach to unearthing '60s garage music, in both the rarities arena and the fidelity and graphics of the packages. More than a decade after Boulders' demise, AIP (which handles the Pebbles series) is anthologizing its one-time rival, this first volume presenting a whopping 52 songs (including one, the Checklads' "Shake Yourself Down," that did not appear on the original Moxie series) on its two CDs. The pressings of Boulders were notorious for their poor fidelity, and to its credit, AIP (not exactly a bastion of digitized sound itself) has remastered from cleaner copies of these rarities when possible. This is one of the better bulky garage anthologies, as it is more flexible in its scope than many '60s punk comps (such as the later Pebbles volumes, which usually stick to standard snotty rants. There are plenty of those here, actually, but there are also some good folk-rockers, a Sonny & Cher soundalike (Boo Boo & Bunky), a cover of a song from the Mothers' Freak Out (the Basooties' "You Didn't Try to Call Me"), and a single that sounds like a Freak Out wannabe (Communication Aggregation's "Freakout USA"). There are also some touches of pop and soul, as in the Cherry Slush's outstanding "I Cannot Stop You," and the Down 5's "I'm Takin' It Home," produced by Jeff Barry and Ellie Greenwich. And there are a surprising number of entries recorded by major labels. For pure '60s punk dementia, it doesn't get much hotter than the Chocolate Moose's "Chocolate Moose Theme." The Avengers' "Open Your Eyes," which affixes some hypnotic psychedelia to the Byrds' jangle-folk-rock, is one of the great, outstanding, obscure mid-'60s singles of all; the Birdwatchers' "I'm Gonna Love You Anyway," with its neat alternation of stomping verse and light British Invasion harmonies on the chorus, had (unlike most of the stuff on Boulders) actual hit potential. ~ Richie Unterberger, All Music Guide

OUTSIDERS -CQ (1968 Dutch rockers) SAALE! Label:RPM The American writer Richie Unterberger called them “not just the finest Dutch group of the ’60s, but the finest group from a non-English speaking country, period.” Holland’s Outsiders have a posthumous reputation that grows and grows. Their 1968 album CQ was a benchmark, one of the greatest albums of the late ’60s from anywhere. RPM International is proud to issue the legendary CQ on CD outside the Netherlands for the first time. Staggeringly it apparently sold just 500 copies when it was originally released. Our package carries bonus tracks from a professionally recorded1968 concert of CQ material at The Fanstasio, in Amsterdam, their home town, by radio station VPRO. CQ was made by a band with their own identity. Songs like ‘Daddy Died On Saturday' have the intensity of the Velvet Underground’s ‘White Light White Heat;’ 'Prison Song’ is the atmospheric equal of The Doors’ ‘The End’. Mike Stax, the editor of Ugly Things magazine, long-time Outsiders’ champion and friend of the band has contributed liner notes. With its iconic original cover art, this is the definitive reissue of CQ. CD $10 SKU:21294

COLOGNE CURIOSITIES-THE UNKNOWN KRAUTROCK UNDERGROUND 1972-1976' - DBL Label:MENTAL EXPERIENCE Cologne Curiosities' collects, for the first time on vinyl, all the otherwise unpublished/un-reissued material that originally appeared on the three 'Unknown Deutschland - The Krautrock Archive' CD's, released by Virgin in 1996. These recordings date from 1972-1976 and were made at studios in Cologne and surroundings. The material was produced by Toby Robinson, mainly to have fun at the studio. Bands would come in for practice sessions, to record demos, and during slack periods impromptu jams would happen. Most of these sessions were recorded by Toby, and they feature Toby himself plus a revolving cast of friends and musicians (some of them apparently big Kraut names using made up monikers). The music ranges from killer proto-new wave to far-out space rock, proto-ambient electronic, dark kraut psyche and raw kosmische sounds with lots of analogue synths/Moog. COMP LP $30 SKU:23550

LIGHTMAN, AARON -ST (HIDDEN pop GEM 1969)-Label:WAH WAH This amazing LP from 1969 is one of the most beautiful hidden gems in the field of pop arranged singer-songwriters. Originally issued on Poppy Records, home of psych heads The Mandrake Memorial among others, Lightman's deserves to be discovered by all the fans of the soft rock, orchestra arranged sounds. Think of an american reply to the early works of Duncan Browne, Bill Fay, Nick Garrie or even Donovan at his most popsike sounding recordings. Fans of the early Bee Gees will also enjoy this LP! Credit for the arrangements and production goes to the great Ron Frangipane and David Christopher, who is also credited as a co-writer of the albums songs. The album came housed in a beautiful Milton Glaser sleeve (Glaser was the main designer at Poppy at that time) which the Wah Wah reissue respects, and featured an insert with the lyrics which is also reproduced on our reissue. LIVING SACRIFICE BAND-Beauty for ashes (75-82 West Coast Xtian heavy rock)SAALE - Label:ANAZITISI From 1975 to 1982 the Living Sacrifice Band would play literally hundreds of concerts from the west coast to the east coast and privately produce 3 albums between 1977 and 1981. "Beauty for ashes" is their second one, from 1979. Side A contains 5 pleasant xian folk-rock ballads, with beautiful female vocals and excellent flute and keyboards work, reminiscent of early 70's UK bands. Side B seems to be different enough, containing three extended rock (you could even call them heavy rock) tracks with female and male vocals as well and lots of fuzzy, distorted guitars, and wild flute leads. 3 tracks of the album are (co-)written by Jim and Vicky Tsapatoris of Last Call Of Shiloh fame. This is an officialy reissue, represented here with the original B/W cover which is much rarer than the second edition from 1980, with the well-known "Flower Girl" cover. Fully laminated cover. Includes extra triptych (6-pages LP-sized) insert with bio, photos, lyrics and memorabilia and a reproduction of the second 1980 edition's ("Flower Girl") front and back cover. Reproduction of an LSB original poster is also included. Limited to 200 black and 100 coloured copies. 180gr vinyl as usual. PVC protective outsleeve LP $17 SKU:20838

ALIVE AT THE DEEP BLUES FESTIVAL - BBQ SAUCE RED VINYL LTD. to 400 copies W Radio Moscow, Left Lane Cruiser , John the Conqueror and more. Label:ALIVE Color vinyl is exclusive to Bomp w/ download card (30 minutes of additional music) Alive At The Deep Blues Fest recaptures the loose and -spontaneous feel of live albums produced in the Golden Age of rock’n’roll.

The album was recorded live this summer at the Deep Blues Festival during three glorious (sold-out) days of great music, Southern-style BBQ and camaraderie between musicians, fans and friends alike, far from the corporate sterility of many larger modern music fests. Chris Johnson’s festival successfully revived the communal spirit of late ‘60s and early ‘70s music gatherings, evoking the vibe of a large summer picnic with family, friends, good food and great music.

BUFFALO KILLERS and RADIO MOSCOW turned in super heavy sets soaked in psychedelia and reverb, while LEE BAINS III & The GLORY FIRES fiercely ripped through their show with a blistering set of songs steeped in Southern rock, R&B, soul, gospel and punk. BRIAN OLIVE and his backing band melded soulful R&B with technicolor garage-pop for their early daytime set, while HENRY’S FUNERAL SHOE (the Welsh duo), LEFT LANE CRUISER and newcomers JOHN THE CONQUEROR perhaps kept closest to the Deep Blues curriculum with their respectively raunchy and heavily amplified modern interpretations of rural gutbucket Delta Blues.

Grab a copy of Alive At The Deep Blues Fest, invite a bunch of good friends over for some food & drink, and PLAY IT LOUD!

BOOTBOY DISCOTHEQUE -14 BOVVER ROCK BRUISERS 1969-1979- CLEAR VINYL Label:YOU BETTER RUN If you went down the wrong alleyway, took a shortcut through the park or crossed the wrong open space after dark in the UK in the 1970s, you stood a fair chance of being accosted by someone with a big mouth, low morals and some gurning mates to impress, usually reeking of fags and cheap booze and always ready to put the boot in. And, before you could say, "sickening violence", a short but chaotic scuffle would ensue and a winner eventually emerge, battle scarred and bruised. The boot boy was the worst kind of hooligan. BROWN ACID - The 14th Trip (long-lost vintage '60s-'70s proto-metal and stoner rock) -Label:RIDING EASY The 14th edition of the popular compilation series featuring long-lost vintage '60s-'70s proto-metal and stoner rock singles, curated by L.A. label RidingEasy Records and
retailer/label Permanent Records. Some of the best thrills of the Internet music revolution is the ability to find extremely rare music with great ease. But even with such vast archives to draw from, quite a lot of great songs have gone undiscovered for nearly half a century -- particularly in genres that lacked hifalutin arty pretense. Previously, only the most extremely dedicated and passionate record collectors had the stamina and prowess to hunt down long forgotten wonders in dusty record bins -- often hoarding them in private collections, or selling at ridiculous collector's prices. Legendary compilations like 'Nuggets,' 'Pebbles,' ad nauseum, have exhausted the mines of early garage rock and proto-punk, keeping alive a large cross-section of underground ephemera. However, few have delved into and expertly archived the wealth of proto-metal, pre-stoner rock tracks collected on 'Brown Acid.' Lance Barresi, owner of L.A.-based Permanent Records and Permanent Records Roadhouse has shown incredible persistence in tracking down a stellar collection of rare singles from the '60s and '70s for the growing compilation series. Partnered with Daniel Hall of RidingEasy Records, the two have assembled a selection of songs that's hard to believe have remained unheard for so long.

LUCIFER WAS -Underground And Beyond (1972 Killer cult proto-metal)-Label:SOMMER Killer hard psych-prog from Norway! “Underground And Beyond” was the debut album by cult proto-metal band LUCIFER WAS, containing songs written in 1971-72 but not recorded until 1997. The band hibernated until 1996 when they reunited again for a live concert. The chemistry was still there so they entered a recording studio and recorded in just 18 hours their first ever album, “Underground and Beyond”, featuring songs written in 1971-72. Their line-up included two flute players plus bass, drums and the killer lead guitar of Thore Engen. Originally released in 1997 as a picture disc LP, here’s the first ever standard LP reissue. MAD FABLES - Get Off(70s Dead style)Label:VOID Rare New Jersey band from the 70's in a grooving, jamming rock in a Grateful Dead (in their seventies garb, post Pig Pen), Allman Brothers (with Duane still alive), Little Feat vein. This is the kind of record that gets better the more it goes on, with side two being one of the most desirable in the whole genre.Mad Fables came together in the 1970’s before such labels as "jam band" or “indie band" existed. They self-produced and published their own music — they released “Get Off” in 1977 — and established a base of friends who enjoyed music and community. They called it "making a record". Every year Mad Fables would celebrate the end of winter and arrival of Spring, by throwing a huge party to which the entire world was invited. Attendees were asked to bring their signature dish or beverage and the group would play spirited sets of music. The leftovers usually fed the group for a month. Mad Fables drew thousands of people to their self-run events. Far more people say they “saw the band live” than actually exist in the state of New Jersey! After the group disbanded around 1980, the feasts continued as a type of once a year reunion. Shockingly enough, the Feast was held for 30 consecutive years. Mad Fables music was never destined for commercial acceptance. In its best years, its members’ incomes would never rise to the poverty line. But for those who were touched by it, the music burns brightly even today. According to the band, Mad Fables' music was the result of a process "that nourished and drew upon their collective experience, fusing the music with whatever emotions arose while playing. This audio alchemy unleashed an energy that enveloped those tuned to this type of frequency, and drove all to a joyful madness.”

MAGI-WIN OR LOSE(1976 hard rocker) BLACK VINYLLabel:GOT KINDA LOST First time authorized reissue of Rust Belt hard rockers Magi's 1976 privately-pressed hard rock nugget 'Win Or Lose', originally issued on the infamous Uncle Dirty's Sound Machine label. 'Win Or Lose' carries similar glimmers to other vulgar, pre-PC, mid-Amerigan rock whose stock-in-trade boy meets girl early rock'n'roll topicry could easily be pulled from the Rock 101 playbook, but Magi was more than mired in muscle and machismo. Magi displayed the general insouciance, hormones, and discontent of their age, but also a concerned and wounded heart underneath the veneer, much less common to the field. While essentially a meat-and-potatoes hard rock record, the album flies closer to the early '70s beginnings of the genre (with nuance and psychedelic hangover in tow), when the definition was less rigidly and generically defined, and is additionally expertly sequenced across its eight strong tracks, improved by a masterful mix and remaster by T. Dallas Reed (Electric Wizard, Iron Claw, Mos Generator, Orange Sunshine, Poobah, Saint Vitus, Treepeople, Truth And Janey, et al.), utilizing a reel-to-reel from the original recording sessions. In-depth and informative liner notes by Jeremy Cargill (Got Kinda Lost/NTS Radio) and Patrick Lundborg. As the uncredited seeker who penned the original rear sleeve text expressed... "Energy is apparent, the subtleties are there, listen, there's no question how they feel! Feel it with them! Feel the Magi!" "...quite contemporary in style for its 1976 release year. Regional and local bands tend to lag behind dominating music trends by a few years, but Magi's sound seems entirely in line with then popular acts like Aerosmith, early Kiss, and maybe Ted Nugent." ~Patrick "The Lama" Lundborg (The Acid Archives). RIYL: Aerosmith, Blue Öyster Cult, '70s Alice Cooper, Eternity, Foghat, Grand Funk Railroad, James Gang, Led Zeppelin, Lodestar, (early) Ted Nugent, Orang-Utan, et al. LP $24 SKU:24938

MCKAY-Into You ( WEEDBURNER- One of the holy grails of 70s Indianapolis private-pressdom ) -Label:LION w Updated liner notes and exactly-transcribed lyrics. One of the "holy grails" of Indianapolis private-pressdom (surpassed only by Zerfas and Anonymous) available again in its original format! Ray "McKay" Pierle and his musically-adept brothers and friends partied, jammed and partied some more on Indy's south side throughout the mid-70's, forming a band (Loos) which managed to garner zero media attention at the time. However, Ray's trusty Teac four-track was always close at hand and countless hours of home recordings were induced onto magnetic tape, as well as a few songs laid down at a local studio. After a brief hiatus, the core members reconvened as McKay, and created their sole document, the 300-press "Into You" album (1978); the LP was given to friends and family and consigned in nearby record shoppes. A mere 15 years had to pass before the collecting world discovered the highly-personal songwriting, tight playing, and not-so-well-hidden West-Coast stylistic touches. A vinyl reissue was locally produced back then but it's long gone, so here's a new all analogue, master tape edition for a new generation to savor. •All-analogue pressing, cut directly from the original master tapes. •Licensed from Ray Pierle with his full cooperation and support. •Updated liner notes and exactly-transcribed lyrics. LP $24 SKU:16350

MCKENNA MENDELSON BLUES- ST (bluesy psych demo tapes from 1968) -Label:PACEMAKER Another great album from Canada's legendary Paragon label, a set of super bluesy psych demo tapes from 1968; the band’s album “Stink” was received not just as a great album of electric blues, but as some sort of revelation when it appeared in the second half of 1969. Lead guitarist Mike McKenna spent time ('67-'68) in the Ugly Ducklings, but he had already developed a 'local hero' tag by playing hard electric blues as a member of the legendary Luke and the Apostles. Together, he and Joe Mendelson made arrestingly earthy music, which soon attracted another of Toronto's rock gods of the day, bassist Denny Gerrard from the Paupers, whose legendary talents had served him well on the stage of the Monterey Pop Festival, where his work with the Paupers was (and still is) considered a highlight. The material included on this disc, which was demo material that now the band claim was “bootegged” by the legitimate Paragon label (a little revisionist history, perhaps?), is arguably even more rare and interesting than that on their classic McKenna Mendelson Mainline "Stink" album. LP $24 SKU:19498

Discovered by punk journalist Alan Anger, they signed to Beggar's Banquet in 1979 for this riveting debut, which included the top-40 single, 'You Need Wheels,' as well as power-pop 'Plastic Smile' and reggae-influenced 'Give It To Me Now.' This brilliant LP captures the band's dynamic start, emphasising the glory days of their short-lived greatness, before Mick Talbot joined Dexy's Midnight Runners and ultimately formed The Style Council with Paul Weller. From deep in the cosmos of Iowa, this psychedelic outfit has created a strange brew of garage, psych, space, sludge and stoner rock.
