DOWN IN THE VALLEYVol 3-A heavy dose of Garage Rock & Psych-Funk tracks-SAALE!Label:PERFECT TOY A heavy dose of Garage Rock & Psych-Funk tracks" runs the sub-title of the compilation series 'Down In The Valley' from Perfect Toy, encapsulating in a nutshell the multifarious pleasures on offer. The Perfect Toy label continues its righteous quest to unearth the finest rare sounds from way out with Volumes 3 and 4 of its Down In The Valley series and in doing so delivers what is most certainly “A heavy dose of garage rock & psych-funk.”
Vol. 3 opens with a characteristically inspiring cut - Sand's cover of Down By The River - one of the best (and certainly one of the most obscure) versions of the Neil Young classic. This is followed by two fine examples of garage rock with a funky twist - Pegasus' Honeysuckle Willow Pride and Enalpria's Sliding, in the slipstream of which follows Heart and Soul's raw psych cut Afterthought. Also featured on this volume are two tributes to Jimi Hendrix that the big man himself would be proud to hear - The Fabulous Troubadores' version of Hey Joe (here literally entitled Tribute To Jimi Hendrix) as well as a psych-soul cover of Stone Free by the The Good Earth. Side B kicks off with Lifeless, the farewell 45 from La Crosse, Wisconsin outfit Today's Tomorrow and also includes two cuts occupying the nexus of garage and psych-funk from Milk & Cookies and Sound Inc., along with the Del Counts's fierce organ-led funk instrumental Who Cares and a very special contribution from GIN whose Louisville Luck is one of two previously unreleased tracks.
Deepest respect goes out once again to crate-digging supremo, Chan The Man, the curator of these two brand-new volumes in the Down In The Valley series. His ambition to search for the impossible and get his hands on private pressings that no one except the freakiest vinyl nerds knew existed has set the path to the release of these two discs. Accompanied by detailed liner notes and never-before-seen photos of the artists, Down In The Valley 3&4 continue the same attention to quality and detail set by their predecessors. LEVEE CAMP MOAN-ST (1969 blues based rock) SAALE! -Label:SOMMER This is the first, legitimate vinyl reissue of this extraordinarily rare album. Includes insert with rare photos and full band history by Pete Sarfas. In 1969 Bracknell based blues rock outfit Levee Camp Moan released what was destined to become one of the most sought after UK private pressings of the period. Issued on the County Recording Services label (SVVS 132), a small run of discs was pressed up and sold locally at gigs as well as being handed out to friends. Housed in an obligatory custom built sleeve that had a snapshot of the group pasted onto the front, this LP marked out their status as one of the most exciting bands to emerge out of the thriving local underground scene in the Bracknell Delta. The group had taken their name from the old blues number and the band members, manager and assorted roadies took up residence in a local farmhouse known as Peacock Farm. It was there that LCM would rehearse into the small hours thumping out a mixture of blues standards as well as their own compositions until they had become a tight unit ready to 'take on the world'. Influences ranged from the urban blues of Otis Rush, Buddy Guy and Junior Wells to Muddy Waters, Skip James and beyond. The more or less contemporary white blues of the time, Canned Heat, Savoy Brown and Paul Butterfield also served as a major source of inspiration. From their humble roots LCM quickly built up a following on the British Blues circuit, frequenting the likes of the Marquee, Crawdaddy, Klooks Kleek, Eel Pie Island and Rikki Tik club. On the college circuit they toured extensively with Chickenshack, Canned Heat and Muddy Waters with performances being of a high enough standard to generate record company interest. Unable to secure a record deal, they had no other choice but to do it themselves. And so it was in the winter months of early '69 that LCM entered Virgin Sound in nearby Windsor to lay down eight tracks recorded on a four track machine. At the time of its creation the term private pressing would have had little or no relevance in musical circles and the significant thing to remember is that in such cases there is no record company interference and what the band was able to produce under these conditions was the archetypal private pressing, raw, under produced and thrillingly primitive. The project successfully captured the spirit and aggression of an exciting new band and the original artefact is now a zeitgeist of that remarkable era. After Levee Camp Moan, Ian Campbell went on to carve out a busy musical career performing with, amongst many others, the Nashville Teens, Arthur Brown's band and Mungo Jerry. Bassist Dave Stubbs played with a host of notables including gigs in Eric Clapton's band and lengthy tours with Uli Jon Roth (ex Scorpions). This is the first, legitimate vinyl reissue of this extraordinarily rare album. Includes insert with rare photos and full band histo LP $18 SKU:22686

LIVING SACRIFICE BAND-Beauty for ashes (75-82 West Coast Xtian heavy rock)SAALE - Label:ANAZITISI From 1975 to 1982 the Living Sacrifice Band would play literally hundreds of concerts from the west coast to the east coast and privately produce 3 albums between 1977 and 1981. "Beauty for ashes" is their second one, from 1979. Side A contains 5 pleasant xian folk-rock ballads, with beautiful female vocals and excellent flute and keyboards work, reminiscent of early 70's UK bands. Side B seems to be different enough, containing three extended rock (you could even call them heavy rock) tracks with female and male vocals as well and lots of fuzzy, distorted guitars, and wild flute leads. 3 tracks of the album are (co-)written by Jim and Vicky Tsapatoris of Last Call Of Shiloh fame. This is an officialy reissue, represented here with the original B/W cover which is much rarer than the second edition from 1980, with the well-known "Flower Girl" cover. Fully laminated cover. Includes extra triptych (6-pages LP-sized) insert with bio, photos, lyrics and memorabilia and a reproduction of the second 1980 edition's ("Flower Girl") front and back cover. MANÇO, BARIS -Nick The Chopper (iKng of Turkish psych/Anatolian rock) SAALE! -Label:PHARAWAY SOUNDS •Newly designed artwork. •Insert with photos and liner notes. Second proper studio album – originally released in 1976 – by the king of Turkish psych/Anatolian rock. Recorded in Belgium with help from session musicians related to Placebo, Janko Nilovic and Mad Unity among others, Nick The Chopper features lyrics in English, huge orchestral sections, and re-arrangements of many of the melodies from his masterpiece “2023.” Barı spent his whole life trying to communicate to the wider world outside Turkey. This was his last attempt at doing so with an album before turning to a travel television show to visit faraway places and talk to the young and old, one on one. Every production trick of the glorious 1970s was deployed to push Barı up the European charts, and now they can push him right into your brain instead LP $15 SKU:20788

METABOLISME -Tempus Fugit ( 1977 French prog )SAALE!-Label:REPLICA (France): First inspired by hard-rock as played by Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple and Black Sabbath, the band then discovered the works of Uriah Heep. With the help of keyboards player Thierry Scaduto, a symphonic touch added a nice aspect to the music. Under the influence of Genesis, Yes and Premiata Forneria Marconi, Metabolisme changed its musical style to play Progressive rock. Signed to RCA's Crypto sub-label, Metabolisme were great at dark atmospheres, processed fuzzy guitars and lost vocals. When they burst out of a slow number and rip into a tight ensemble piece you might hear touches of Arachnoid. The spacey Pink Floyd atmosphere recalls Pulsar, especially at the time of "Pollen" . The album opens with the longest track, nearly 16 minutes of pure delight, featuring two lush keybords passages and great guitar chops. One instrumental track, 'Tempus,' shows that they were capable to creat great prog rock, with captivating guitar keyboard parts. Released as late as 1977, the album didn't stand a chance of making it to a larger audience in a time in which punk rock started its devastating heyday. The music offered on the album was far to fine- drawn for the period in which it was released. Still, Metabolisme's "Tempus Fugit," their one and only album, is a treasure for those who love lush organs in the style of Yes, sophisticated guitars Uriah Heep and French vocals a la Mona Lisa. Is that you? then you need to buy this record. LP $19 SKU:21016

METAPHYSICAL ANIMATION-ST SAALE! (ultra obscure Floridan psych/prog 1973
) DBL Label:BLACK WIDOW Reissue of an ultra obscure Floridan psych/prog album from 1973. Less than 50 copies were pressed at the time, housed in a plain white demo sleeve with the band name hand-written in pen on the cover. Classic '70s prog, with significant elements of fusion and psychedelic rock. Sometimes it sounds like a take on 'Close To The Edge'. Other times it sounds like Rick Wakeman briefly joined Pink Floyd during the 'Wish You Were Here' sessions. And then there are the tracks that sound like a looser, more electrified Graham Bond Organization. LP $25 SKU:21510

MONUMENT - First Monument (London 1971 hard rock Sabbath style ) Label:GUERSSEN Heavy organ and guitar doom hard rock recorded in London in 1971 by the members of cult hard-rockers Zior. A must for fans of early Black Sabbath or Leafhound. High quality carton cover, pressed on 180 gram vinyl. Mastertape sound quality. Includes an insert with extensive liner notes by Andy Morten. LP $26 SKU:21633

ONE OF HOURS-When You Hear The Music, It’s Yours-(late ‘60s US Pepperish U.S garage psych)-Label:OUT-SIDER Famous for their 'Psychedelic Illusion' 7", US garage-psych band One Of Hours formed in 1966. After adding guitar player Bob Willcutt to their line-up, they released their second 7", 'Feel The Pain'/'Psychedelic Illusion', in 1967. Work then began on their album 'When You Hear The Music, It's Yours'. Fuelled by the creative force of band member Shawn Foreman (who would create the cult electro/disco project Transistor-Jet in the '80s), the group renamed to Dandelion Wine, went in true psychedelic mode, experimenting with unusual recording techniques. Comes with download card. LP $30 SKU:20958

ORFEUS -Lying to the Wall (Rare 1973 Kentucky harcdore/prog) Label:VOID 1973 Ultra Rare and nearly impossible to find local Kentucky Hardrock Progressive LP with a nice mix of originals and covers and housed in superb fantasy art cover. LP $19 SKU:22510

OZ KNOZZ -Ruff Mix( US 70s private press hard rock/prog)Label:OZONE First legit reissue of one of the best US private press hard rock/progressive rock albums of the 1970s. Formed in 1969 in Houston, TX, Oz Knozz's original crew included multi-instrumentalists Jack Alford, Bill Massey and Duane Massey. Alford left the group in 1971 and was replaced by drummer Marty Naul, while the next year the trio was joined by guitarist Richard Heath. The band had also a three-man horn section, which was dropped quite fast, although horns remained a part of the band's sound, even on their rare and epochal 1975 private press debut ''Ruff Mix,” released on the band’s own Ozone label.“Ruff Mix” mainly grooves in Hard Rock territory—the second track 'Peanut Butter Yoni' sounds a bit like Judas Priest with a proto-Metal feeling; but the album also has elements of Progressive Rock, Horn Rock and Pomp Rock. Like most bands of the era, the idea was to throw out a few different styles to see if something would stick… the theory being that a major label would hear the private album by chance and sign said band so they could open for Led Zeppelin or Foghat's next US tour… or something like that. What separates Oz Knozz from others is a strong compositional component, the band have plenty of original ideas and muster superb instrumentation. The guitar work ranges from hard and powerful to melodic and bluesy and is supported by some great keyboard, including awe-inspiring organ and synth waves. The three-part 15-minute 'Doodley Squat’ suite features heavy dual keyboard parts, crunchy guitars and expressive vocals; the result is a terrific Hard Prog track with lot of energy. For many, the standout track is the groovy and infectious horn rocker, which sounds as dated as the movement itself and easily could have been from 1969. High energy and impressive songwriting LP $22 SKU:21411

TRYAD-IF ONLY YOU BELIEVE IN LOVIN'(1971 acid folk)Label: DEL VAL Last copies of this 2014 reissue of this excellent acid folk album. Del Val Records present a reissue of Tryad's 'If Only You Believe In Lovin'', originally released in 1971 as a private press. Ultra-deluxe LP reissue on the recently resurrected (and sadly now defunct) Del Val label, the obscure but legendary label previously responsible for early and collectible vinyl editions by The Brigade, The Bachs, Bent Wind, D.R. Hooker, Fifty Foot Hose, etc. Long overdue and much delayed reissue of this NYC private press few have heard and less have seen. Comparable to the best UK folk-fusion LPs of the era, this is like a Yankee version of Hunter Muskett's great 'Every Time You Move' (1970), with co-ed vocals plus bass/drums/pedal steel/flute/keys accompaniment. Consider this East Coast haunted not West Coast hip, though you'll be reminded of a certain revered private from out there that wouldn't exist for another five years: Relatively Clean Rivers. Comes with a four page lyric insert, and the cover is what they were made like fifty years ago, this one is a heavy duty, very excellent Stoughton tip-on jacket. LP $15 SKU:22511
