★★★ ½ 3 and half star review of GOSPELBEACH “Another Winter Alive” via ALL MUSIC

AllMusic Review by Tim Sendra - GospelbeacH's second album Another Summer of Love was a laid-back and organic take on early-'80s Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers that had an extra layer of energy and songcraft that was missing from their Grateful Dead-obsessed debut record. Under the guidance of Beachwood Sparks' Brent Rademaker and a crew of like-minded folks, the album was concise and focused guitar pop with all the harmonies and jangle of Petty at his best. It was good enough and true enough to that warm West Coast-meets-Heartland sound that it seemed a shame to have only been 11 songs long. Luckily, the sessions did produce a few more songs and 2018's Another Winter Alive gathers them up. The five songs here were left off the album, but surely only for time limits, as they are all strong enough to have made the cut. The rambling, bongo-heavy take on friend-of-the-band Neal Casal's "Freeway to the Canyon" is sweet and relaxed, "Down South" is a weirdly psychedelic country ballad that Rademaker could have saved for his other band, "Change of Heart" is a streamlined, radio ready Petty-styled rocker, and "Dreamin'" is a lovely, midtempo track that would have been the emotional core of Another Summer of Love if it had been included. The fifth track, "Runnin' Blind," was on the album but is featured here with a different mix. The second side of Another Winter Alive is made up of five songs taken from a live, semi-acoustic show recorded in London. It's a loose set, with no drummer to keep them in time and Rademaker's vocals way out front. The songs are from both albums, and it's nice to hear them in a stripped-down state with the occasional ripping guitar solo (as on "In the Desert"). It's easy to look at an album of odds and sods like Another Winter Alive and think it's a non-essential addition to their catalog, born of the label's desire to make a few more bucks off the band. That's truly not the case here; the first side is GospelbeacH at their best and the flip is, while admittedly not vital, still a lot of fun. Certainly anyone who liked the first two albums, and especially Another Summer of Love, needs to seriously consider adding this set to their collection.

BUFFALO KILLERS- Dangerous Highway: A Tribute to the Songs of Eddie Hinton Vol. 4 PIC SLV - Label:SHAKE IT Some artists considered geniuses spend a lifetime in the spotlight. Some artists, deemed the same, spend their time in the shadows helping that elusive spotlight shine a little brighter on others. Nothing could be truer to that sentiment than the career of songwriter/singer/guitarist Eddie Hinton. As a key player in the Muscle Shoals Sound, his session work quickly becomes a game of Six Degrees of Eddie Hinton that connects Dusty Springfield to Toots of The Maytals, Herbie Mann to The Staple Singers, Lulu to Percy Sledge, Wilson Pickett to UB40 and Aretha Franklin to countless others… and throughout, one constant stands at the center: Eddie Hinton & his uniquely passionate, soulful vision. This series is a humble attempt to shine that same spotlight on Eddie for a well-deserved standing ovation. Everyone on their feet!

CHEMISTRY SET - (COLOR # 2) Kiss Me Vibrate and Smile gatefold ltd ed. -Label: FRUITS DE MER A new 7" single from The Chemistry Set, one of the key bands behind the late 80s neo-psychedelic movement (they were championed by the likes of Tony Wilson and John Peel). After the small matter of a 17 year break, the band re-formed, and this is their second single on Fruits de Mer since they returned to the fray. Combining two new new songs and a cover of a 80s psych classic, this release oozes sheer class through every orifice, as does the band. Give it a listen - and do your part to ensure there are no more 17 year hiatuses (hiati?) You know it makes sense (which is more than than this press release is achieving so far). Limited to 800 copies - two colour vinyl versions (no CDs or downloads). Released on Fruits de Mer Records' Regal Crabomophone label. Gatefold sleeve. 45 RPM $10 SKU:14701

CHOOSERS -HANGING UP ON YOU (Japanese powerpop) Label:BACHELOR BW /IN MY DREAM- They are from Japan, they love Powerpop and the know how to sing/write melodies!!! These three guys are living on the northernmost main island Hokkaido, right in Sapporo City, and they did one firecracker of a single back in 2010 on the Japanese label POP'N'ROLL with two songs, "Christine" and "I Can't Stop", those 500 copies sold out in a jiffy. Bachelor immediately sent out their A&R guys to Japan to persuade them to do a single! And here it is! A classic single with two songs, an uptempo kinda love song called "Hanging Up On You" and a tearjerker of a flipside called "In My Dream"! Think of classic power pop bands like RASPBERRIES, 20/20 and NERVES mixed with the latest Japanese hitmakers like RAYDIOS, TREEBERRYS and GIMMIES! Yes I know, that territory is being explored much these days, but the THE CHOOSERS really take it to a next level. Stats: 500 copies housed in a thick glued cardboard sleeve. 45 RPM $10 SKU:20076

SHOTGUN -Dallasian Rock( Led Zep style 70s hard rock )Label:SHROOMANGEL (USA) A blend of hard hitting riff rock á la early Led Zeppelin and James Gang, with a guitar attack reminiscent of bands like Leafhound or Edgar Broughton Band. Tight, muscular, lean and mean urban blues rock riffage and soaring, soulful vocals, punchy bass and solid drumming make for a memorable set of songs that you won't soon forget. Shotgun had a successful career in and around Dallas, TX between 1974 and 1977, playing the club circuit and recording at the cities best studios. Sadly, nothing ever came of the recording sessions and Shotgun eventually morphed into VIZION, which released an album in 1980 that featured the vocals of Jan Houston. Finally after more than 38 years, Shotgun's long lost studio sessions are presented for the first time ever on LP as they were meant to be heard. The CD versions includes eleven additional bonus tracks. The most amazing thing about these tracks is how they remained on the shelf all these years! •Tight, muscular, lean and mean urban blues rock riffage. •Previously unreleased vintage studio tracks from the 1970's CD $10 SKU:19956

SHUSHA- + This is The Day (70s obscure Persian )CDLabel: With influences ranging from medieval folk to Jacques Brel and Joan Baez, the albums have a lot to offer—good folky tracks with, at times, a Middle Eastern flavour. Other tracks, mostly on the second album, have a more west coast feeling. A bit of a gem! CD $8 SKU:19196

SKORNIK,GUY -Pour Pauwels ( 70s psych ) - Label:LION Skornik was a mystic explorer, psychonaut, and gifted musician, who was immersed in the metaphysical revolutions of his time. He presented television reports, laced with elements of Eastern mysticism, on LSD experiences. And then there was Skornik's album, "Pour Pauwells", inspired by the revolutionary writings of Louis Pauwells, one-time counterculture hero and disciple of esoteric spiritualist G. I. Gurdjieff. CD $10 SKU:15440

SNAKEGRINDER - And the Shredded Fieldmice (70s psych Grateful Dead style) - Label:OBSCURE OXIDE "Every burg in the '70s that had a steady supply of weed and electricity undoubtedly provided a birthing ground for the formation of bands influenced by the likes of Jerry Garcia and Lowell George, and the Delaware area was no different. What was different was that our subjects-at-hand got it together and in 1977 released an unassuming document for posterity, containing nothing but original, winding (dare we say "snake-like"?) compositions and good vibes throughout. Since then, the album has garnered accolades from the Acid Archives crowd and so we felt the time was right to give the group's efforts a proper (and properly licensed from the band) presentation, with an "old-style" heavy mini-LP sleeve and thick booklet containing pics, gig posters, song lyrics and liner notes by producer and longtime fan GREGOR ALLIGATOR. In addition, we've added a half-hour of unreleased live tracks from the same era, and everything you hear (album and bonus) was transferred from the mastertapes." CD $10 SKU:8709

SNOWCHILD-AGE OF CHANGE(stoner, psych, blues and hard rock )-Label: KOZMIK ARTIFACTZ The Wichita fuzzers Snowchild managed to birth a debut album that comes on like a churning maelstrom of sound, and continues to punch listeners in the face with a heavy sound that mimics the stoner rock of yore, but is also undeniably their own. Snowchild throw stoner, psych, blues and hard rock into a big melting pot, chuck in a big dollop of groove and serve it molten hot. This tastes like Sabbath, Pallbearer and has hints of Cream. CD $14 SKU:19732

ANDREW -WOOPS (obscure 73 private press psych)-Label:BARNYARD A totally obscure and totally shredding 1973 private hard-psych album, from Iceland of all places! Nearly impossible to find in its original form, the material on 'Woops' ranges from funky hard-psych to space-rock, and also includes the amazing doom-psych jam 'Himalaya'. Featuring members of another classic Icelandic band, Icecross, Andrew's lone LP is one of the few examples of a private press psych record from Iceland. This very, very fine '70s psych-rock LP is essential for all fans of hard-psych and it's finally reissued on vinyl! LP $22 SKU:18582

ANTORCHAS, LAS - ST LAST ONE! ultra-rare 60s Mexican psych w. liner notes, and a poster insert that replicates the Orfeon EP art) - Label:VAM MEXICO Las Antorchas were formed in 1965 by five college students in Mexico City. They released only one EP on Orfeon, but had recorded enough material for an album. They split around 1968/69, but after a line-up change they continued under the name of Antorcha. Thanks to the persistence of VAM Records and record producer Manuel Alvarez Valdez, we now have all known material of Las Antorchas, including their Orfeon material. Their early sounds are rock/beat influenced, with most relying on organ and vocals. But the excellent ‘Dime’ is a really great acid-punk track. Truly underground Mexican rock, waiting to be discovered. This edition has liner notes, and a poster insert that replicates the Orfeon EP art LP $17 SKU:15111

ARCESIA-Reachin' (rare 70’s private press acid-rock / pop, gatefold, w insert and lyrics -Label:GUERSSEN RECORDS (SPAIN) A classic since year zero of rare record collecting, Reachin' Arcesia has always been the focus of many rumors and bizarre stories. Guerssen sets the record straight with this, the first ever legitimate reissue of this legendary album. John Arcesi was a veteran singer of the big band era who, in the early '70s, recorded a pop album with help from an anonymous hip studio musicians. The album was released in a private edition of 300 copies and most of them were given away to family and friends. In the late '80s, one of those copies was unearthed by record dealer Paul Major, who was one of the first people to appreciate the singularity of Reachin' Arcesia. Since then, the album, which mixes over-the-top crooner vocals with late '60s acid-rock and pop arrangements, has developed a reputation as a lounge-psych/real people masterpiece. Remastered and presented in a gatefold sleeve with the original artwork on the back and a new cover design on the front. Includes insert with lyrics. Features detailed liner notes and rare photos in the inner gatefold, telling the real story of John Arcesi. LP $19 SKU:16346

SIGHTS- Most Of What Follows Is True (Thin Lizzy, Mott The Hoople and Grand Funkstyle, Kick ass, GREAT RECORD!) Label:ALIVE This is classic rock for modern people – especially those who like the harder sound of bands like Thin Lizzy, Mott The Hoople and Grand Funk Railroad. Awesome opening track “How Do You Sleep” may sound like it was recorded 35 years ago, but it, along with much of the record, transcends any era-trappings. It feels current and it kicks ass. The band wisely re-teamed with old producer Jim Diamond, who is responsible for at least 75% of the best straight-up rock records of the past decade (The Dirtbombs, The Ponys, The Whites Stipes…etc), and he doesn’t disappoint here. As with past Sights records, some of the ballads have an “aw shucks” earnestness that I can do without, but those cloying moments are a small price to pay for the live-wire jolt of the album’s best tracks like “Hello To Everbody”, “Take and Take” and “(Nose To The) Grindstone”. CD $5 SKU:12166

SIGN OFFS- ST ((Duane Peters label- kick-ass classic punk rock)LAST COPIES Label:DISASTER What the hell is it about young kids from culturally dead suburban wastelands that makes for such goddamn good rock? Case in point: Cleveland's The SIGN OFFS. Whereas most punk kids are happy just to dress the part and play in useless, shitty bands until banking or insurance sales brings dreary normality to their doors, this bunch of high-schoolers from way-the-hell out on the far-west side of town, knocking out quickie rock'n'roll burners inspired by the usual suspects, (D-Generation, Turbonegro, G'nR, US Bombs, AC/DC, Dead Boys) quickly matured into a powerhouse live band. The the singer and both guitarists just turned 18 when they recorded this album, and one of the members was still in high-school. Some high-energy kick-ass punk rock rooted in their hometown's tradition.CD $5 SKU:2282

SILENCERS BUNDLE - 2 cds for just $8 (60 style Detroit surf set ala Link Wray, Ventures andDick Dale )Label:ALIVE LAST COPIES If there is a band that can be presented as the modern heirs of Davie Allan's '60s sound it is Michigan's trio, The Silencers. This album is a one-way ticket out of squareville on a wild ride to a wig-out fuzz fest. Fuzzy guitars, chicks and choppers, is how their get their kicks. Produced by Mick Collins of Gories and Dirtbombs fame. CD $8 SKU:11020

SIXTING MUSIC- Rendering Pink Floyds (Obscure French-only Pink Floyd covers!)-Label:Skyf Zol Obscure French-only Pink Floyd covers album gets an outing on CD; as the label says, “It was only natural that the budget/knock-off record market would venture into the vaunted world of progressive music. And so, sometime after the release Dark Side Of The Moon, musicians of suitable competency were hired, cover songs were selected, and the art department went to work on something eye-catching and only a little deceptive. Not surprisingly, six of the eight tracks are aimed squarely at the Meddle/DSOTM heads, leaving just enough room for a slowed-down ‘Apples And Oranges’ and the tossed-off instrumental ‘Red Phone. CD $8 SKU:19040

SNEETCHES & CHRIS WILSON -Flaming Groovies related - ST ( Flamin Groovies related power pop ) LAST COPIES! Label:MARILYN Chris Wilson & the Sneetches is more of a necessity for diehard Flamin Groovies fans than for diehard Sneetches fans, as the San Francisco power pop quartet are simply the backing band here. Wilson, who was the George Harrison to Cyril Jordan's Lennon/McCartney during the Groovies' most British Invasion-inspired phase, is completely in charge here; along with three spirited live renditions of Flamin Groovies classics, "Between the Lines," "I'll Cry Alone," and, interestingly, "Slow Death" (which was written and recorded by the Roy Loney incarnation of the band before Wilson even joined) CD $5 SKU:2360

SOFT MACHINE- Turns On Vol 2 ( 60s ) Label:VOICEPRINT (England) Second vital collection of archival live Soft Machine recordings from 1967 and 1968. Robert Wyatt's drumming is nearly miraculous, and Mike Ratledge's organ is at its daring and explorative best. Admittedly this is not meant as an introduction to the band for novices, but lovers of the Soft Machine will be blown away by the alternate versions on this disc; they are even more daring than the official releases. Soft Machine (billed as The Soft Machine up to 1969) were formed in the summer of 1966 by Robert Wyatt (drums, vocals), Kevin Ayers (bass, guitar, vocals), Daevid Allen (guitar) and Mike Ratledge (organ) plus, for the first few gigs only, American guitarist Larry Nowlin. Wyatt, Ayers and Hopper had been founding members of the Wilde Flowers, later incarnations of which would include future members of another Canterbury band, Caravan. This first Soft Machine line-up became involved in the early UK underground, featuring prominently at the UFO Club, and subsequently other London clubs like the Speakeasy and Middle Earth, and recorded the group's first single ' Love Makes Sweet Music.’ During July and August 1967, promoter and manager Giorgio Gomelsky booked shows all along the Cote d'Azur, with the band's most notorious early gig taking place in the village square of Saint-Tropez. This led to an invitation to play at producer Eddie Barclay's trendy "Nuit Psychédélique"; the band performed a forty minute rendition of ‘We Did It Again,’ singing the refrain over and over, achieving a Zen-like quality. This made them instant darlings of the Parisian "in" crowd, resulting in invitations to appear on leading television shows and at the Paris Biennale in October 1967. Meanwhile, upon their return from their summer sojourn in France, Allen (an Australian) was denied re-entry to the United Kingdom, so the group continued as a trio, while he returned to Paris to found Gong. The tracks on this disc are drawn from three live performances: tracks 1-5 are from Amerstdam, 10 December 1967; track 6 is from the Middle Earth Club in London, 10 November 1967; tracks 7-14 are from Col Ballroom, Davenport, Iowa, 11 August 196 CD $8 SKU:10918

SOFT MACHINE- Turns On Vol 1 (1967)-Label:VOICEPRINT (England) First vital collection of archival live Soft Machine recordings; these are from 1967, and (unlike “Turns On Vol. 2”) include some studio recordings. Turns On, Vol. 1 catches the newly formed group in their first studio recordings plus live performances in early to mid-1967, all pre-dating the first LP. The lineup on most of the 16 tracks consists of Robert Wyatt, Mike Ratledge, and Kevin Ayers. Daevid Allen appears on four studio recordings. The repertoire draws a lot from the Wilde Flowers' songbook, Ayers, Hugh Hopper and Brian Hopper having written most of the material (Wyatt and Ratledge were only beginning to submit material). Fans will appreciate some of these recordings, especially the first "Clarence in Wonderland"; the 13-minute "Hope for Happiness"; and Wyatt's "Lullaby Letter.” ~ François Couture. Recording information: European Studio (1967); Middle Earth And Speakeasy Clubs, London, England (1967); UK Studio (1967). CD $8 SKU:18998

SOFT MACHINE- Turns On Vol 1 &2 (1967) DOUBLE CD -Label:VOICEPRINT (England) Double disc combines both individual "Turns On" volumes, in new packaging. Volume 1 is a vital collection of archival live Soft Machine recordings from 1967, and (unlike “Turns On Vol. 2”) includes some studio recordings. Robert Wyatt's drumming is nearly miraculous, and Mike Ratledge's organ is at its daring and explorative best. Fans will appreciate some of these recordings, especially the first 'Clarence in Wonderland'; the 13-minute 'Hope for Happiness'; and Wyatt's 'Lullaby Letter.' Recording information: European Studio (1967); Middle Earth And Speakeasy Clubs, London, England (1967); UK Studio (1967). As for Vol. 2, this is not meant as an introduction to the band for novices, but lovers of the Soft Machine will be blown away by the alternate versions on the disc; they are even more daring than the official releases. The tracks on this disc are drawn from three live performances: tracks 1-5 are from Amerstdam, 10 December 1967; track 6 is from the Middle Earth Club in London, 10 November 1967; tracks 7-14 are from Col Ballroom, Davenport, Iowa, 11 August 1968. A BOLHA -Um Passo a Frente ( 60s Brazilian Psych GATEFOLD COVER ) Label:GROOVIE HAND NUMBERED Brazilian band the Bubbles became the toast of the underground Rio de Janeiro scene, backing Tropicalist singer Gal Costas residence at the Sucata night club in 1970. They won the "Best Band of the Festival" award at the VII FIC of 1971 (International Festival of Songs), the same year they appeared on Lenos "Vida y obra de Johnny McCartney" album. After venturing to England to attend the Isle of Wight Festival, they decided to experiment with a heavier sound, more akin to UK bands of that era (Deep Purple, Cream, King Crimson, Humble Pie, with a little Beatles "White Album" in for good measure) than that of their Brazilian cohorts. A name change to A Bolha later, still loaded with verve and swagger, fueled by drugs, they recorded their first album, which has secured a permanent place as one of the best hard psych rock albums to ever emerge from South America. The LP, "Um Passo a frente" (A step forward), was released in 1973 by the Continental label, in a gatefold cover which was quite luxurious for the era. This masterpiece, now impossibly hard to find as an original, certainly made a name for A Bolha in the pantheon of 1970s Brazilian rock. But success in the early 1970s was not like it had once been in the old Jovem Guarda or Tropicalist days, when bands had weekly TV shows to help them become well- known nationwide-and eventually, worldwide. In other words, the meager abilities of Continental to promote the album made it a collectors item, not the fate a band would actively seek for their recordings. The lp is a replica in a gatefold cover, and includes the infamous hard- rocking 1971 single as bonus tracks. LP $22 SKU:12031

ABSTRACTS - Hey Let’s Go Now (60s Brit invasion style)Label:BREAKAWAY They were one of the first bands to utilize a light show and besides their sole 45, their legacy contains a cache of unreleased period recordings, some of them made for Columbia Records in 1964. Finally, over four decades later, this album collects the band’s entire studio material alongside two excellent sounding 1966 live tracks. An in-depth insert with a wealth of never-before-seen-photos traces the history of the band that brought “Abstractmania” to the New York area in the sixties. It’s a pleasure for Break-A-Way Records to celebrate the return of The Abstracts and hear them shout again, “Hey, Let´s Go Now”… TRACKLISTINGS ON SITE LP $15 SKU:13551

ALLAN DAVIE AND THE ARROWS - Arrow Dynamic Sounds (60s Surf/Fuzz ) LAST COPIES -Label:TOTAL ENERGY Starting in the '60s as a surf group, Davie Allan & the Arrows took instrumentalmusic a step further, hot-wiring their sound with the abuse of fuzz pedal. "Talking about pop culture, baby? Allan was an architect, a natural fact rock & roll artist. Allan's ax rocks, stalks and talks with heat, assurance and (believe it or not) a maturity that transforms the oft-shallow rock-instro into epic-scale slabs of rock & roll expression. Dazzling." - L.A. Weekly LP $10 SKU:4480

ASTRAL SCENES ASTRAL PROJECTION(1968 Pop/Psych- get out the lava lamps!) )Label:HIMALAYA This 1968 Pop/Psychedelic Rock album is just chock full spacey instrumentation and utilizes horns, woodwind, and string sections very much like those used in Sgt. Peppers. The theme of this release is based upon the thoughts and feelings experienced if one were to leave the physical body (Astral Projection) and become the spiritual embodiment (Astral Body). The Astral Body begins to go back into the physical body and causes one to think about The Astral Scene…..There are some very nice male and female vocals which are backed up by the great orchestration and this LP is one to set the lights down low on and turn on the Lava Lamps!!! AURA- Sativa (1974 SF psych funk masterpiece) - Label:LION Official replica vinyl edition of this oft-sampled slab of Bay Area history, a psych funk masterpiece that cannot be denied. Aura formed in 1974 and played extensively throughout Northern California. By 1976, the band recorded their first and only album at Pacific Recording Studio in San Mateo. The original title of the album was meant to be "Sativa", but out of fear that promoting the joys of marijuana would be too controversial, the band omitted the title and just left it as "Aura". Over the ensuing decades, the Aura album has grown in stature to become a major soul/funk collector's item. It features a number of major funk tracks plus funky ballads with female vocals. Standouts include 'Sativa' (replete with water-pipe sound effects and blistering guitar), and the manic fuzz-guitar jam 'Skyrocket.' Old style tip-on jacket and quality limited edition vinyl pressing, mastered from the original tapes. LP $10 SKU:19263
