Previously unreleased heavy acid-rock/proto-prog album from 1972! Asgard (initially known as Osgoode, named after the street where Blue Cheer had their headquarter) was a San Francisco band featuring ace guitar player Bob Hardy (a veteran of many Bay Area bands since the early '60s) and Jake 'Gelon' Lau (Gideon & Power, Mary McCreary, Tribe...) on electric violin and vocals. This is their lost album, registered at Roy Chen Recorders in 1972, now released for the first time. 'For Asgard' features nine original tracks, perfectly recorded and played, dominated by Bob Hardy's outstanding fuzzy lead guitar and the cool touch of Gelon's Lau electrified violin that recalls UK prog-psych bands like the similar named Asgærd or High Tide at times. Hard to believe that such a pro-recorded, top quality album like this was never released at the time. After playing a celebrated free concert at the Provo Park in Berkeley alongside bands like Mother Cat and Summerhill, the band slowly disintegrated. Blind Willie formed in Spokane (Washington) in 1972 and featured terrific guitar player Frank Trowbridge from hard-psych legends Sleepy John. They carved out a unique niche in the Northern Idaho/Eastern Washington rock scene in the early to mid-'70s, performing original music in a time when doing so wasn't widespread for regional bands. Within weeks of the group's formation, they commanded stages with a potent smattering of hard-rock, country-rock and psych. The band's history includes a brief courtship with the Doobie Brothers' Dave Shogren on bass, as well as major label interest from Columbia and Epic Records. Here's the first ever release of their amazing studio demos from 1972/74. Blind Willie's original lineup of Craig Karp (guitar, vocals), Frank Trowbridge (guitar), Charlie Bieker (bass, guitar, vocals) and Jim Griffith (drums) is represented via slices of incendiary rock'n'roll pomp recorded on a 4-track tape machine in a friend's apartment in 1972. Pete Fine is a virtuoso acoustic and electric guitarist and also a self-taught composer and orchestrator. After playing with psychedelic hard-rock trio FLOW in the early '70s in New York, Pete, influenced by classical composers like Anton Bruckner, started to focus on his 12-string guitar, composing music in a symphonic style. 'On A Day Of Crystalline Thought' was his first solo album, self-released in 1974 as a private, home-made edition of 100 copies, now impossible to find. It was recorded using classical/rock musicians plus a chamber Orchestra from Harlem. Before becoming a cult singer/songwriter in the '90s, Scottish musician Jackie Leven debuted in the early '70s with 'Control,' issued under the John St. Field pseudonym due to "problems with the forces of law and order." Recorded in London and helped by musicians from Man and other friends (Phil Ryan, Juliet Lawson, Jesse Ballard, Joe Kucera...), the album featured a collection of wonderful songs written by Jackie after his experiences wandering away and taking copious amounts of LSD. Unlike previous reissues, this one features the complete tracklist in original running order and also a new insert with previously unseen photos/memorabilia and recollections from some of the musicians involved. Real underground heavy-prog/psychedelic hard-rock with raw, in-your-face production, German lyrics, insane acid-fuzz guitar, garage organ and dark, proto-doom atmosphere... the real deal! Named after the famous Lovecraft book, Necronomicon formed in the German town of Aachen in 1970, first influenced by bands like Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Pink Floyd, Hendrix... In 1972 they entered a small studio on the Dutch border and recorded in just five days a concept album named 'Tips Zum Selbstmord.' The title roughly translates as "Tips on how to commit suicide" but the message the band wanted to give had nothing to do with taking your own life but instead with how mankind was facing self destruction, destroying its own planet by pollution, wars, exploitation and overpopulation.
500 copies of the album were privately pressed by the band, housed in a lavish, cross shaped multi fold-out cover. It was a graphical translation of what they wanted to express musically.
Original copies are impossible to find, making it one of the most desirable and sought after Kraut/German albums ever. Legendary and rare folk-psych private press record from 1967 that holds up well. Furthermore, the LP is legendary in a literal sense: until recently, few collectors really even knew it truly existed. And Roger Salloom? imagine Jack Kerouac, John Belushi, Lord Buckley, and Lenny Bruce, then throw in Leadbelly, Jimmy Reed, Lonnie Johnson, and Geoff Muldaur… all rolled into one person, and you have a glimpse of poet, singer-songwriter Roger Salloom.

Salloom was in the center of the 1960s San Francisco psychedelic scene, playing the Fillmore with Santana, Van Morrison, BB King and Procul Harum. In the 1970s he moved to Nashville to pursue songwriting, then disappeared for two decades to raise a family as a single parent and draw a syndicated cartoon. There is a story here. A story so intriguing that it enticed an award-winning filmmaker to make a film about the subject. So Glad I Made It, the Saga of Roger Salloom, America’s Best Unknown Songwriter, won six awards, was on the 2006 Grammy ballot, and received rave reviews across the U.S. Check the trailer if you wish:

Let’s back up: in Bloomington, IN, Roger formed Salloom, Sinclair and Mother Bear. Moving to San Francisco in 1967, they performed in venues such as The Carousel, The Fillmore and The Avalon Ballroom alongside contemporaries Santana, Procol Harum and BB King. When Chess Records founder Marshall Chess sought to broaden the label's roster, he signed Salloom, Sinclair and Mother Bear; this resulted in two albums released on Cadet/Concept. When Mother Bear went into extended hibernation, Salloom and co-leader Robin Sinclair found further success in Nashville with Area Code 615. Roger created an extended family of artist peers while in Nashville that included Guy Clark, Rodney Crowell and Richard Dobbins. Later, as a single Dad, Salloom had a challenging life throughout the 1980’s. After settling in Northampton, MA, he continued songwriting, recording and playing with artists such as The Band, John Prine, Jonathan Edwards, Jerry Jeff Walker, The BoDeans, Joan Armatrading and Leon Russell.

But before all that, Salloom was in Indiana, performing at a coffee house called The Owl. “The City in an Owl’s Eye" is from that period (1967) — and it is simply brilliant. Most of the LP is Salloom, presenting a Hippie Buddhism, era-appropriate, Indian raga-inspired droney homage to everything being nothing. Totally out there. A large portion of side two is a psychedelic voice/sound collage from a group called the Vest Pocket Players. A fair bit of digging reveals that a 19-year-old Kevin Kline (yes, the actor) was part of that group. Everyone else is a mystery. Void Records says: "I spoke to Salloom, who couldn’t seem to remember what I had just said, let alone who else was involved with the recording, or that group. Ahhh, acid [peyote - ed]. Repress in hard cardboard sleeve. Sabattis were an underground hard-rock band from New York formed in 1968 by Jim Marvin (guitar & lead vocals), Gary Culotta (keyboard and vocals), Larry Wegman (drums) and Rocky Kaler (bass). Influenced by bands like Deep Purple, Mountain and Grand Funk, they gigged around town playing lot of psychedelic clubs and venues. In 1970, they recorded a demo with the intention of securing a record deal which never came. The demo tape was in fact a fully finished album recorded and engineered by a friend from the band, Mick Gauzaski, who despite using a homemade studio, managed to obtain a real pro sound. No wonder Mick is now a multiple winner Grammy award! The Sabattis demo remained unreleased until 2011 when Jargon Records discovered the tapes and put out a CD edition with the band's involvement. This reissue of 'Warning In The Sky' is remastered from the original tapes and includes an insert with rare photos and liner notes by Klemen Breznikar (It's Psychedelic Baby). Sabbatis' sound is powerful heavy-psych sound with swirling Hammond organ and hard guitar which brings to mind other obscure acts like Jungle.

UK psych-folk private press mega-rarity, originally released in 1975. 'Jack With A Feather' was the first vinyl album (after the private cassette only release of 'Rowdy Dowdy Day') by Spriguns Of Tolgus, just before they shortened their name to Spriguns and signed to Decca, recording two classic progressive folk-rock albums. Recorded in a cottage in the middle of nowhere, the album offers mostly traditional songs with charming homemade atmosphere, psychedelic touches, male / female vocals (by Mandy Morton), acoustic/electric guitars, mandolin, dulcimer, fiddle... LIGHTNING - 1968-1971 (Mpls 60s garage LEGENDS)Label:ARF ARF Lightning was an offshoot of Minneapolis '60s legends Litter that featured guitar wizard Tom 'Zippy' Caplan. After recording the Litter's 1966 garage classic Distortions and 1968 psych masterpiece $100 Fine, Caplan split from the Litter and formed Lightning. The band started out as a power trio and cut one fierce Cream-inspired single 'William' b/w 'Of Paupers And Poets' in 1968 under the White Lightning moniker with Twin Cities record producer Warren Kendrick. The band regrouped into a quintet and scored a record deal with P.I.P. which issued their eight-song album. That album has since become a highly collectable LP. Lightning became one of the Midwest's hardest working rock acts and toured extensively throughout the region during their three-year tenure. This authorized CD reissue includes their entire LP, the aforementioned 45, plus six additional bonus tracks (including edited 45 mixes of two album tracks) all wrapped in an archival 12-page booklet with lots of photos and liner notes by Litter-scribe Doug Sheppard. Between this package and Arf Arf's White Lightning Strikes Twice [1968-1969] release, the band's entire musical legacy has been properly archived.
