GOLIATH -ST (Lousville Vol 9 1970 Crosby STill Nash style)Label:GEAR FAB The Ninth Installment of our Louisville Music Series. Another great band whose only studio recordings lay dormant until now. From 1970, this bands sound is very reminiscent of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, The Allman Brothers, and Traffic. Great vocal harmonies, coupled with terrific swirling guitars and the ever present sound of the B3 Hammond organ make this one great release!! CD $10 SKU:21716

GONZALEZ, WALLY -Tunog Pinoy (heavy acid blues psych Pink Floyd style)Label:VICOR ENTERTAINMENT (Philippines) Just listening to the soaring solos of the third track, ‘Pinag-isa’, makes us think how much this sounds like Pink Floyd circa “Dark Side of the Moon”—atmospheric, with breathy vocals, yet thick with that mid-70’s heavy energy at the same time; then you get to ‘Rock & Roll Mama’, and it’s stinging guitar leads and crunching rhythm section all the way; Gonzalez clearly was not a one trick (heavy acid blues rock) pony, which explains why this album has always been held in such high regard among those who had a chance to hear it. CD $10 SKU:18971

GONZALEZ, WALLY -Wally on the Road 70s (heavy acid blues psych)-Label:VICOR ENTERTAINMENT (Philippines) First of, don’t be deceived by the title—this is a studio album all the way; altogether a different sort of album from “Tunog Pinoy”, thudding out of the gate with the monumental ‘Kailan Pa Kaya’, syrupy treated vocals, John Bonham-esque drumming and all; dig too, if you will, the Zeppelin vibe of ‘Screw’ before sailing into the trippy, acoustic ‘Tattong Araw’, or the legendary ‘Wally’s Blues’; more effects than the earlier record, sounding more like newfound recordings from the late 1960’s than a mid-70’s record—this has more psychedelic credentials than most reissues which get that label bestowed upon them; you might say that while “Tunog Pinoy” is classic rock in the best sense, this is classic psychedelia, in the best sense. CD $10 SKU:18972

GOSPELBEACH- Pacific Surf Line- (With Neal Casal) Label:ALIVE GospelbeacH is Tom Sanford (drums), Brent Rademaker (vocals, guitar), Jason Soda (vocals, guitar), Neal Casal (vocals, guitar), and Kip Boardman (vocals, bass), with guest appearance by Nelson Bragg (vocal harmonies), and Ben Knight (guitar).

The five members of GospelbeacH possess a prestigious collective resume that includes membership in Beachwood Sparks, Further, The Tyde, the Chris Robinson Brotherhood, Ryan Adams and the Cardinals, and Everest. But one listen to the quintet’s warmly wonderful debut album Pacific Surf Line will instantly dispel any preconceptions about supergroup self-indulgence or side-project slumming. CD $10 SKU:16832

Printed on FSC recycled, chlorine-free, 100% post-consumer fiber paper manufactured using biogas energy. "Their (first) 45 had two absolute masterpieces: ‘Gotta Getta Record Out,’ which yelps and shouts along like the best of the old Bongos or Jam or Feelies or somebody, and ‘I Don’t Want To Say No,’ which is the sort of white Motown that assholes like the Replacments could never get right. This is not a punk record, except perhaps in spirit, but it isn’t any worse for that."—Steve Albini CD $10 SKU:14882

GREEN SEAGULL- Cloud Cover (60s pop Left Banke, The Kinks style)Label:MEGA DODO Cloud Cover' sees Green Seagull develop their fascination for melodic sixties pop and combine it with glorious vocal harmonies to create a mellow Stateside vibe filtered through early '70s UK acts like Brinsley Schwarz and Danny Kirwan-era Fleetwood Mac. HANDSOME JACK- Do What Comes Naturally (blues fused rock and roll ) -digipack -Label:ALIVE REVIEW by Shawn Obnoxious
Naturally” hits with blues fused rock and roll that truly grips you. There’s a certain charm in the mix… A real honesty that you find in those nowadaysands that are sectioned off from the mainstream… Handsome Jack deliver a confidence that only you can accept or deny. The truth isn’t for just anyone these days.

The only factor that suffers with a band like Handsome Jack is the reality of the fact, that music, of any genre, suffers. There is a lot of music out ‘there’ riding invisible rays and available thru a multitude of formats and accessibilities. You gotta dig deep and find what connects with you before it’s lost in the shuffle of the beast called Right Fucking Now. As listens of “Naturally” tallied, the more and more I appreciated the release as a whole… The sorts of fondness that would not be found in a big-shot music reviewer scanning ten seconds of each track then spit out a few adjectives to coincide with that press release. Fuck that.

Rock N Roll isn’t dead if you don’t want it to be. Let’s try to spend some time with a CD or record or whatever, to connect once again. Yes, it comes naturally to just hit the button to most, but not because we want to, it’s because some have too. Take some time with “Naturally”. Turn it up. Sit a while. Open up your mind and your ears. You just might like something after all without being given permissions by the industry. CD $20 SKU:16201

HAZLEWOOD, LEE -Something Special-Label:LITA The three years spent on MGM Records between 1966 and 1968 were golden ones for Lee Hazlewood. He spent them working with his muse, Suzi Jane Hokom, writing a still-unreleased book, The Quiet Revenge of Elmo Furback, competing with Phil Spector from their respective studios, and coming up with the formula for the "boy/girl” songs for which he’d become famous. In fact, the unflattering portrait on the cover of Something Special did little to hint at how hip this late-flowering talent (he was in his late 30s when “These Boots Are Made For Walkin’” made him a star songwriter) had become.

The common strand on the MGM trilogy is one of the unexpected happening. They were an ill fit for a major label–experimental, difficult to pigeonhole, and unpredictable. Those descriptors apply nowhere more aptly than Something Special. Where 1966’s The Very Special World Of Lee Hazlewood and 1967’s Lee Hazlewoodism: Its Cause And Cure had employed an arranger, Billy Strange, and a full orchestra, Something Special stripped things back and brought in a flavor of jazz and blues, complete with gravelly-voiced scatting courtesy of collaborator Don Randi. This sat alongside tracks like “Little War” and “Hands,” the kind of late night, acoustic balladeering Hazlewood would later seize for his career-highlight LP, Requiem For An Almost Lady. The sound was that of a stripped-down nightclub jazz/blues/folk combo, fully rejecting the psychedelic music going on all over the world.

The album made clear that forging a career as a serious star was not at the top of Hazlewood’s agenda, and at the third opportunity, he’d let the listener in on the joke. Tellingly, Hokom recalls Hazlewood saying the MGM albums were his “expensive demos. I’m sure that MGM thought that they would be successful.” Little chance of that with Something Special –it was originally released only in Germany. The same year, Hazlewood founded the LHI imprint, and began building his own empire, one we’ve been lovingly archiving for the past few years. We now present this missing link in the story, three albums that generated some of Hazlewood’s best–and most varied–work.

HONEYRIDER- SUNSHINE SKYWAY (infectious pop gems) -Label:DIONYSUS Florida's Honeyrider are one of the more widely buzzed about bands in the indie underground. Their first two releases on legendary UK label Damaged Goods Records—All Systems Go! (1998) and Splashdown (2000)—are infectious pop gems that won the group praise in publications such as the NME and Rolling Stone. The group has just completed their third album, Sunshine Skyway, which is their best effort yet. Like its predecessors, the new record is full of buzzin' Jesus and Mary Chain/Primitives guitar sounds, Beach Boys-styled melodies, and soulful psychedelic pop, but the songwriting here is even more potent, the lyrics displaying a personal side that vocalist/guitarist Gary Strickland has only hinted at previously. CD $5 SKU:19816

HORDE - Press Button Firmly (mid sixties rare garage ) w 4 bonus tracks -Label:BREAK-A-WAY Rarest 60s garage album by North Carolina students from early 1967. Painstakingly remastered at KSL. Undoubtedly the most exciting mid sixties garage album to be recently discovered in the genre, is that by The Horde from North Carolina. The existence of this self produced album came to collectors ears and eyes only about a year ago. It was recorded more or less accidently in early 1967, released in a micro quantity of only 25 copies and among the local US garage albums of the decade it is one of the few eclectic examples with all the ingredients that makes it outstanding compared with the usual prep-school albums of the time. It contains a blend of exciting originals and well chosen, inspired covers, played in a raw, crude and frantic style. If ever it were true that the over-used assertion that a band's cover versions measured up to the originals, then it is true of The Horde. Why? These five 19-20 year old students from all over the United States did not only blaze a trail for 60s rock in then conservative North Carolina, they also had a general attitude that finds its origins in the young peoples mindset of the mid-sixties that put them outside of the local mainstream and gained them a sort of regional underground popularity. CD has 4 bonus tracks. CD $12 SKU:15346

TWO TIMING BABY -Ember Sixties Pop: Volume 2, 1961-1962Label:FANTASTIC EMBER In 1960, Jeffrey Kruger launched Ember Records as an independent, one of very few in the UK, where the majors held sway. Straight away, the label set about trying to break into the charts with many fine pop releases. The Ember Sixties Pop series compiles the best of those records. “Two Timing Baby” picks up the story from where Say When: Ember Sixties Pop Volume 1 (FVCD044) left off. Carter, Lewis & The Southerners first Ember single ‘Two Timing Baby’/’Will It Happen To Me’ features Joe Meek engineering, Geoff Goddard on piano, Albert Lee on guitar, Chas Hodges on bass and Bobby Graham on drums. The Meek connection continues with Mark Douglas only single: Joe produced ‘It Matters Not’/’Upside Down’ and Tornado Clem Cattini confirms he drums on both tracks. American songwriters Buddy Kaye and Phil Springer penned many hits, including ‘The Next Time’ for Cliff Richard. They brought several songs to Ember and Grant Tracy was the adaptable vocalist on ‘The Great Matchmaker’/’The Tears Came Rolling Down’ and the follow-up flip ‘Taming Tigers.’ Other beneficiaries of the prolific Kaye and Springer were Johnny Carson (‘Are You Anyone s Girl’/’Teenage Bachelor’ and, again, ‘The Tears Came Rolling Down’) and Sandra Gale (‘Hello Heartache’/’If She s Right For You’) who had been girl singer with the Ray Ellington Quartet, joining Ember when Ellington did. Kruger chose the songs for Lita Roza’s single with the aim of moving her sound towards pop and rock n roll, and she turns in fine performances on ‘Mama (He Treats Your Daughter Mean)’/’(He s My) Dreamboat,’ aided by a driving band led by Tony Crombie. Brooklyn-born Kerry Adams recorded her single in New York, conducted by future soul giant Jerry Ragovoy. The Dale Sisters cute harmonies are evident on their second Ember single, ‘Road To Love’/’Secrets.’ Tommy Sanderson’s second Ember 45 combined trad-jazz ‘Ding Dong Rag’ with groovy ‘Piano A Go Go,’ which would have made a great theme for a TV detective show. Many of these original singles are highly collectable (mint copies of Mark Douglas are valued at £75, Carter, Lewis & The Southerners at £50 and Lita Roza at £30). Subsequent volumes will carry the story through to the end of the sixties, with further sought after tracks included. The series is complemented by compilations devoted to beat and rock from the Ember vaults. Recordings are mastered from tape, where available, and booklets illustrated with sleeve and label shots. Nice shrink-wrapped slip-case packaging. COMP CD $10 SKU:19205

SPARKLES -THE COMPLETE RECORDINGS Texas 60s garage (+7"/CD)-Label:JUKEBOX MUSIC FACTORY The Sparkles were associated with the garage-band and psychedelic rock scene of 1960s Texas, as epitomized by their classic underground hit 'No Friend Of Mine'. The line-up changed few times before 1962, and Stanley Smith finally recruit Harold "Lucky" Floyd (drums and vocals), Donnie Roberts (guitar) and Bobby Smith (bass). Their first recording was the single 'U.T.' under the small label Caron. This third incarnation proved a great hit among the clubs of West Texas, notably the Music Box and The Village Swinger. Indeed, in 2000, local legend Joe Ely described them as the "city's best rock'n'roll band" in the history of the Lubbock music scene published by Texas Monthly. Interestingly, The Sparkles boasted a pair of drummers, with one, the flamboyant Harold Floyd, also lending his voice to their performances. 1966 would constitute a turning point for The Sparkles. Larry Parks -drummer for Roy Orbison, turned producer in Nashville, Tennessee- invited them to sign with Hickory Records, the historic music label founded by Roy Acuff and Fred Rose in 1954. The band came up with 'The Hip', which proved an immediate hit in Austin and extremely popular within the fraternity scene at the University of Texas. On a roll, The Sparkles then recorded 'Something You Said' followed by 'Jack And The Beanstalk'. In 1967, The Sparkles, already a decade old, recorded their chef-d'oeuvre 'No Friend Of Mine', with Nunn's raging guitar riffs and Floyd's remarkably tense vocals. This fiery tour de force would be consecrated by its inclusion on the first CD set of the legendary compilation 'Nuggets: Original Artyfacts From The First Psychedelic Era, 1965-1968'. Following their final single, 'Hipsville 29 B.C.', for Hickory Records, The Sparkles once again entered rocky waters, with Nunn and Holt finally deciding to throw in the towel in 1968. Floyd, Smith and Marriot immediately set sail for California, along the way renaming their group The Pearly Gate. This brief interlude would include a handful of appearances on the ABC sitcom 'Judd, For The Defense'. Legend has it, they were also scheduled to perform before Bobby Kennedy the evening of his tragic assassination on June 5th 1968... Returning to Texas, Floyd, Smith and Marriot resurrected The Sparkles, bringing into the fold Steve Weisberg, future guitarist for John Denver. But Floyd's departure in 1975 for California to join Red Wilder Blue spelled the end of this group's 15-year musical odyssey, a tumultuous journey typical of such modest rock'n'roll heroes posthumously crowned by multiple thematic compilations. However, the one you're now holding constitutes the very first anthology dedicated to these incredible Texans LP $32 SKU:21875

SPIRITWOOD -ST original sealed copies of this private press Acid Archives fave!Label:Tanrydoon Private pressing from 1979, first released on the Tanrydoon label out of New Berlin, Pa. Original sealed copies, which contain a lyric insert. “Hippie-flavored rural folk form this duo, who write good songs and deliver tight male-female vocal harmonies. It sounds almost a decade earlier than the release year, and recurring influences from UK folk (like Clearing) contribute further to the sense of displacement. Occasional use of piano and a strong sense of melody have made for some comparisons with Mellow Candle, and it’s a testimony to Spiritwood’s quality that this doesn’t seem too outlandish. There are a few moves towards CSN domains, and late 1960’s westcoast in general, which should have been explored more. The guitar arrangements (with banjo on two trad-ish numbers) interplay seamlessly with the strong vocals, and the personal commitment makes up for a certain lack of artistic direction.” —Acid Archives LP $28 SKU:23691

SPOILS OF WAR - ST (PRE MORMOS PSYCH )60s DOUBLE-LP with POP-UP GATEFOLD SLEEVE and a BONUS 7-INCH! Label:WAH WAH A fantastic release offering the complete late '60s recordings from US pre-MORMOS outfit SPOILS OF WAR. Before relocating to France, where he formed the highly regarded prog/psych-folk unit MORMOS in the early '70s, American musician James Cuomo was the creative force of The Spoils Of War. This interesting band combined psychedelic rock with adventurous electronic experimentation, comparable to f.i. The United States Of America/Joe Byrd And The Field Hippies and 50 Foot Hose, with a dash of folkrock due to the contributions from female vocalist Annie Hat. Back in the day the band only released two rare 7-inches, but thanks to the -now out of print- releases from Shadoks Records, Spoils Of War achieved cult status afterall. Now this deluxe Wah-Wah Records double-LP collects the remastered '60s studio recordings from the band, complete with previously unissued material, making for a splendid release. Also included are a repress of the debut 7-inch, a sticker, full colour pix, and liner notes from Jim Cuomo and Klemen Breznikar (It's Psychedelic Baby). Essential for psych lovers and collectors everywhere! LP $45 SKU:24156

SWAMP DOGG -Rat On! STARBURST VINYL 1971 SOUTHERN SOUL CLASSIC Ltd ed of 250Label:ALIVE Rat On (1971), was ranked as having one of the top ten worst album covers of all time, an achievement that Swamp Dogg is rightfully proud of. Vocally, Swamp Dogg sounds like a cross between General Johnson (of Chairmen of the Board) and Van Morrison; as a songwriter, he’s his own man. With the exception of Sly Stone, no other soul men of the period were investigating controversial topics with such infectious musicality and good humor. – AMG LP $25 SKU:23884

THUNDERTREE-ST (70s Mpls killer fuzzed out garage) SAALE!Label:GUERSSEN Coming from the same Minneapolis '60s scene which spawned bands like The Litter, Thundertree evolved from garage band The Good Idea. In 1970 they released their sole album for the Roulette label: a perfect example of the transition from psychedelia to hard-rock and early progressive sounds. Killer fuzzed out guitar, organ, powerful vocals. Including hard-psych classics like 'In The Morning" or 'Room At The Top Of The Stairs' along with the monstruous 17 minute long '2025' suite. For this, the first ever legit vinyl reissue of Thundertree, the label included two previously unreleased tracks: 'Pepper Palace' (a great psychedelic number) plus a storming cover of 'Sixteen Tons', which was the signature song on Thundertree's live shows. TOTAL REJECTION - The Time Traveller's 3rd Will And Testament (Garage rocking pop-psych heads)Label: RAVING POP BLAST! Garage rocking pop-psych heads , very possibly the best one yet. Taking their '60s influenced garage rock music a step further, 'The Time Traveller's...' finds deeper darker depths. Influences are worn on the front of t-shirts, quite openly yes, but you can actually believe these guys know what they're wearing! This album builds on the raw sound of its predecessors with a further blast of psych'n'roll. Tremelo and wah wah pedals get abused to squalling effect, Keith Moon-esque drums clatter and the Hammond wails. It's ALIVE! And THRILLING! The songs are stuffed with pop melodies and the sound has its tentacles over all manner of '60s bands - the cover of Bohemian Vendetta's 'Enough' gives a clue as to where the band's collective head is. The album is beautifully produced in a way it sounds like it wasn't produced at all. Totally raw and occasionally rough-edged, exactly how music was recorded, before technology smoothed everything out to near blandness. Guitars twang, chime, fuzz and wah-wah into a frenzy of excitement, vocals stretch beyond their abilities and occasionally scream and break, while the drums biff bang and pow (er) their way through, while somehow holding everything together. Organs swirl, and a variety of 'strange sounds' all of which were created by experimentation, rather than using modern day 'plug ins' or 'pressing buttons', will have you wondering, what is that?... LP $25 SKU:23420
