PROMISE- ST ( 80s Beatlesque power pop ala Badfinger, Big Star, early Cheap Trick, Emitt Rhodes, The Raspberries, Liverpool Echo, The Scruffs, Shoes, Dwight Twilley Band, etc. ) w liners -Label:GOT KINDA LOST RECORDS (SPAIN) First reissue of the privately pressed 1980 self-titled debut by Colorado power pop band Promise. "An exciting, terrific British Invasion-styled guitar pop album full of catchy, memorable hooks, displaying a tougher, 'rock' edge than most of its ilk and some excellent softer songs. Equally recommended to power pop and '60s rock fans." --Aaron Milenski, The Acid Archives If you're continuously searching the margins for lost artifacts of the pop pantheon, you can find your daily dose in late period exponents of pure, lean, Beatlesque power pop band Promise. Originally issued in 1980 on the Boulder, Colorado, area band's own Cumulus label, their eponymous debut is filled with melodic, beatific blasts of pure pop, replete with ringing, jangly guitars and rollicking crunch. Co-led by singer-songwriters and guitarists Curt Mangan and Danny Mey -- with aid provided by the just-right rhythms of bassist Randy Jones and drummer Gary York -- the group created an album with precious little allying it to the punk-inspired power pop or prescient new wave of the time, instead choosing to hone in on a classicist pop sound highly indebted to those famous moptops from Liverpool. Abetted by the fact that some of the group's members had been playing together since their teenage combos of the mid '60s, the album carries an out-of-time flair across surging rockers and mournful balladry. Got Kinda Lost Records is ecstatic to give this benchmark of privately pressed power pop another chance to shine with this first ever reissue. Includes exhaustive liner notes by Jeremy Cargill (Ugly Things Magazine) culled from interviews with Mangan and Mey. RIYL: Badfinger, Big Star, early Cheap Trick, Emitt Rhodes, The Raspberries, Liverpool Echo, The Scruffs, Shoes, Dwight Twilley Band, etc. CD $17 SKU:16561

Q65 - Q65 - BEST OF -Nothing But Trouble 1966-68 - ( great 60s Dutch pop ) Label:REV OLA BACK IN PRINT! - From Den Haag (The Hague) in Holland, Q65 were among the country's wildest (Neder-)beat/r&b-groups of the 1960s. Their firebrand approach to the beat and rhythm'n'blues boom was the opposite of what most of the country's successful pop group fraternity were putting over at the time; best represented with the unpolished, raw intensity of 'Youre The Victor', their 1966 debut for Decca which shook up the charts and caused shockwaves throughout the nations living rooms. They continued to crack the top end of the Dutch pop charts with killer singles such as 'The Life I Live', and 'I Despise You'. They took part in a crazy record company promotional stunt crossing the sea from England in a rubber dinghy, and with 'Revolution', Q65 created one of the best debut-LPs of the era. CD $17 SKU:15888

- Gentle garage-psych with a dreamy west coast flair, tons of awesome fuzzed-out guitars, heartwarming vocal melodies, and Korean-language lyrics, all executed by highly skilled musicians. Heavily reminiscent of The Zombies, though San Ul Lim play in a much more direct fashion; other reference points include The Flies (UK, pre-T2) and The Petards (Germany). Highly recommended for fans of proto-garage beat with psychedelic tinges from 1965 to 1967. Gentle garage-psych with a dreamy west coast flair and tons of awesome fuzzed-out guitars... with Korean-language lyrics. Originally released in 1977, South Korean trio San Ul Lim's debut album sounds like the best psychedelic power pop and garage stuff you could get in the UK and USA ten years before its release. One of the most popular acts on the Korean scene, San Ul Lim had exactly this typical 1966 garage sound, with fuzzy axes and some thin but sympathetic Farfisa organs. These compositions were conceived between 1971 and 1975, and, with their heartwarming vocal melodies and gifted musicianship, are heavily reminiscent of The Zombies, though San Ul Lim play in a much more direct fashion. Their music represents a movement from early beat to heavier and darker garage rock, which finally shifted into psychedelic rock. Fans of proto-garage beat with psychedelic tinges from 1965 to 1967 will go wild for this album. Other reference points include The Flies (UK, pre-T2) and The Petards (Germany). A lovely flashback to the golden age of music. CD $16 SKU:16721

Features early electronics, sampling, pastiche, psychedelia, pop and Lennon-esque vocals. Remastered sound with the original artwork and a reproduction of the rare original insert.
- Inspired by the aural collage of The Beatles' 'Revolution Number 9,' Bill Holt quit his straight job in 1972 to follow his musical muse, hoarding various electronic gadgets and an acoustic guitar and holing up in his basement. He emerged a year later with Dreamies, one of the finest pieces of experimental pop from the era. --All Music Guide
- "The overall effect is something like a primordial Olivia Tremor Control, and easily as wild and unfettered as anything The Residents were doing in the '70s. Dreamies has its obvious and acknowledged influences -- The Beatles and John Cage chief among them -- but it's also clearly the work of an untutored auteur dissecting his own mind in the basement on reel-to-reel.--Pitchfork LP $19 SKU:15435

EDDY DETROIT- Shock-A-Lock-A-Lickum Ltd ed. ( STooges, Mc5 connection ) -Label:ASSOPHON (United States) Where to start with Eddy Detroit? Born and raised in Detroit, Michigan, it was there, in 1966, that he was in attendance for the first Iguanas gigs (Iggy Stooge's first band). He joined the White Panther party in Detroit and was "there" for the pre-punk sounds of The Stooges and MC5 ("We all smoked dope on the state Capitol and got beat up by the cops"). In the early '70s he traveled to London, where he stalked Marc Bolan and tried to seduce Tony Visconti's then-girlfriend Mary Hopkin. It was with Ms. Hopkin, when he was dropping off a demo tape at the Apple store, that he witnessed the moment when Ringo found out that The Beatles had broken up! (We've got the pictures to prove it!) In the mid-'70s, Detroit settled in Hollywood and started The Terminal Wave Band (bongo/synth/punk) which was the soundtrack to the hippy/biker/S&M/satanic/polyamorous scene that Detroit ruled in dingy, underground LA -- that's when he wasn't trying to seduce Nico (The Velvet Underground) to become one of his muses and lovers ("True story bub"). When rents in LA got too much for an acid-fried biker/S&M/punk, Eddy moved to Phoenix, AZ, and was seminal in fostering one of the most interesting underground musical scenes of the early '80s. He was an unofficial member of the Sun City Girls, toured with the Meat Puppets and Mighty Sphincter, and was the pith-helmeted shaman-in-residence at his club The Grotto! This LP contains recordings made from 1979 to 2010. They run the gamut of Detroit's musical landscape, from the UK acid-folk of Tyrannosaurus Rex and The Incredible String Band through bongo-fueled satanic calypso to his new phase as a troubadour recounting tales of hobos, whores, and one-eyed jacks from the old west. Limited edition of 500 copies. LP $19 SKU:17204

ELECTRIC EELS - Die (75 punk Dead Boys style) SALE - Label:SUPERIOR VIADUCT Cleveland's electric eels (all lower case in homage to poet e.e. cummings) is America's qRecommended for fans of Dead Boys, Simply Saucer, and PagansQuintessential proto-punk band. Formed in 1972 by singer Dave E. McManus and guitarists John Morton and Brian McMahon, the group enlisted drummer Nick Knox (later of The Cramps) and producer Paul Marotta to record a flurry of catchy and genuinely fucked-up tunes. After only five legendary live performances -- complete with Dave E. in black leather jacket covered in rat-traps and playing a gas-powered lawnmower on stage -- the eels broke up in 1976 and posthumously released their classic single Agitated on Rough Trade in 1978, blazing a trail for high-art, low-concept rock. As Jon Savage writes in the liner notes, 'There is something heroic about the eels' isolation and uncompromising attitude: a fierceness that you can hear in these songs that still resonates in a different time and world.' This archival LP collects the eels' best material from 1975. From the loud and snotty 'Agitated' and its B-side 'Cyclotron' (which Johan Kugelberg listed as #1 in his top 100 punk singles) to the anarchic anthem 'Jaguar Ride' and the loose, bluesy sludge of 'Anxiety,' the album exorcises the demonic power of the Stooges and Velvets and captures the mystique of these outsider artists inventing a new language. As the eels demand 'Attendance Required' on their flyer for the infamous Special Extermination Music Night, listening is absolutely mandatory for this seminal band. LP $22 SKU:16796

ELECTRIC PRUNES - Stockholm 67 ( psychedelic-garage-punk ) 180 GRAM GATEFOLD SAALE -Label:SUTRO In the winter of 1967, a psychedelic-garage-punk band from Woodland Hills, California arrived in Europe for what would be their first and last tour of the continent. On the strength of their hit single 'I Had Too Much to Dream Last Night,' the band was welcomed with open arms by European rock fans as well as British rock royalty -- they smoked out with Hendrix, partied with Brian Jones and Keith Moon, and hung out in the studio with the Beatles -- but were also subjected to harassment and ridicule over the fact that their homeland was at war in Vietnam. On the last stop of the tour someone pushed the record button and this artifact is the result. Stockholm '67 finds the Electric Prunes at the height of the powers. Over-amplified and fuzzed to the max, the 'Prunes here are explosive, noisy, and wild. This recording proves that the Electric Prunes deserve to be ranked alongside the very best bands of their era." 180 gram vinyl in a gatefold sleeve LP $19 SKU:14670
