NEW ARRIVALS

FLASHBACK MAGAZINE UK - #8 KOOBAS -Label: Spring 2016. Edited by Richard Morton Jack, Flashback covers overlooked '60s and '70s music in depth, with expert writing, original research, and many rare and previously unseen images. In this issue: The Koobas: This Liverpudlian quartet released numerous 45s; toured with The Beatles; gigged with Jimi Hendrix, The Who, and Pink Floyd; made a fine album in 1968; and became stars in Switzerland -- but success at home proved hard to find. Richard Morton Jack tells their story for the first time. Jukebox: Michael Tanner of The A. Lords and United Bible Studies on 12 tracks that have inspired him. Album by Album: David Hitchcock oversaw classic records for Caravan, Genesis, Camel, and many others. Here he talks Flashback through his productions one by one. Time Out: Starting in August 1968, Time Out quickly became the most important source of information about what London had to offer, musically and otherwise. First Person: Robert Calvert recalls the short and intense career of Catapilla, with contributions from his bandmates Hugh Eaglestone, Brian Hanson, and Ralph Rolinson. Paternoster: Swiftly recorded and only released in their native Austria, Paternoster's sole album is one of the most despairing and enigmatic recordings of its time. Stephan Szillus tells its tale for the first time. The Human Beast: Though this Edinburgh trio disowned their weird, hard-rocking LP, it has gone on to become a firm favorite around the world. Richard Morton Jack speaks to them. George Martin: A long-lost and revealing 1968 interview with The Beatles' producer, conducted by the late J. Marks and exhumed from the pages of Eye magazine. The Evolution of Rock Critics: Aaron Milenski explores the changing tastes of rock critics -- and how they shaped his own tastes as a teenager. Mushroom: These Dublin teens had a big hit in 1973, toured Ireland relentlessly, and made one of the best "Celtic rock" albums of all time. Richard Morton Jack gets their story straight. Tamam Shud: Tamam Shud was one of the first Australian bands to embrace late '60s acid culture. Ian McFarlane tells their story. The Parlour Band: This Jersey quintet made one of the most highly regarded progressive pop albums of the early '70s. Austin Matthews gives their full history. British Private Pressings: Fifty of the best privately released albums from the heyday of British underground music. Reviews: Thorough coverage of recent CDs, LPs, and books, taking in household names (The Beatles, David Bowie, Van Morrison), cult heroes (Captain Beefheart, Procol Harum, Françoise Hardy), and ultra-obscurities (Robbie The Werewolf, Fuchsia, Lucifer). Crying to Be Heard: The enigmatic Day Breaks by John Wonderling, lost since 1973. BOOKS & MAGS $25 SKU:17381

JUSTIN TROUBLE-Ponytail/No Love (Prod by Thunders)-Label:MUNSTER RECORDS (Spain) Reissue of the first Justin Trouble single, originally released in 1980. Produced by his friend Johnny Thunders, who also co-wrote the B-side, "No Love," it features two fantastic short and punchy songs in the Thunders/Syl Sylvain/NY Dolls vein with a touch of '50s rock 'n' roll, power pop sensibility, and punk immediacy. Co-released by Spanish label Munster Records and French label Mono-Tone Records. 45 RPM $10 SKU:17207

WAILERS- The FAbulous At the Castle IMPORT - Label:MR SUIT RECORDS The Wailers had coalesced from a crude instrumental combo with hits like "Tall Cool One" into a storming rock'n'soul outfit by the early 1960s, and the Spanish Castle in the DMZ between Seattle and Tacoma was their home turf. Modeling themselves somewhat on the scale of a small-change soul revue, they sported instrumental workouts from the band built around Mike Burk's propulsive and exciting drumming ("Shivers," "Sac O'Woe") and Rich Dangel's bluesy guitar playing ("San-Ho-Zay"), along with the triple threat of vocal turns from piano/organ pounder Kent Morrill (a nice reprise of "Dirty Robber" from the Golden Crest album) and featured band vocalists Rockin' Robin Roberts ("Rosalie," "Since You've Been Gone") and Little Gail Harris ("All I Could Do Was Cry," "I Idolize You"). These are the Fabulous Wailers you hear on this disc: a groundbreaking band in their prime on their home turf. An added bonus to this ultra-important live album -- and make no mistake about it, every Northwest band from the Kingsmen to the Raiders to the Sonics on down were influenced by this band and this record -- are the inclusion of two bonus tracks, both sides of the original Etiquette/Wailers/Rockin' Robin Roberts single of "Louie Louie" and "Mary Ann." Undoubtedly one of the most influential albums in Seattle rock & roll history. LP $15 SKU:17380

DOMNICKS - Super Real (Stems DM3 Someloves etc digipack Label:CITADEL Their debut album Super Real marks a coming of age for The DomNicks. Forged by Perth based Dom Mariani and Nick Sheppard, the band is a powerful blend of swagger 'n' roll rock, soul and pop smarts. Mariani is best known as the driving force behind The Stems, DM3 and The Someloves, while Sheppard's pedigree boasts 80's Bristol punks The Cortinas and thereafter as Mick Jones' replacement in the 1983-86 line-up of The Clash. In 2007 the pair teamed up with Howard Shawcross (The Elks, The Riptides) on bass and Marz Frisina on drums, quickly developing into a very 'hang loose' combo. Playing a mix of Dom and Nick's originals with a spread of 60's and 70's garage and soul classics, they are a band of seasoned players punching well above their collective musical weight. Super Real continues in the tradition of The DomNicks' previous recording, Hey Rock 'n' Roller (Off The Hip 2009). Expanding on Hey Rock 'n' Roller's gutsy guitar driven sound, Super Real takes a ride through blues, soul, funk, and classic guitar pop influences to create one seamless musical journey fuelled by the vim and vigour of a noble era. Among the 12 tracks you'll find the Exile era Stones' sound of Reconcile, the brazen brass and swing of Let's Go Baby, soul flavours in I Wonder What You're Doin' Now, the straight ahead rollicking of Miracle and tantalising twists and turns of the electric sitar driven Winter. It's bound to cause the head and heart to shake. CD $16 SKU:14597
