NERVES - One Way Ticket FIRST PRESSING AUTOGRAPHED BE JACK LEE -LAST COPIES ON YELLOW VINYL! - Label:ALIVE "Their bare, skeletal sound made every lick seem memorable. They excelled in energy. People compared them to the early Beatles or the Dave Clark Five." - Kenneth Funsten. Formed in 1975 by guitarist JACK LEE, bassist PETER CASE, and drummer PAUL COLLINS, the Nerves are one of the most influential garage/punk pop outfits to come out of the mid-70's LA scene, and certainly one of the least documented... until now. Mostly remembered for their classic "Hanging On The Telephone," a Jack Lee composition which has been covered over the years by a myriad of artists from BLONDIE to L7 to CAT POWER, the Nerves were above all a high energy rock'n'roll band with all three members composing and singing. Playing fast, ear-catching garage pop songs, sometimes wearing matching suits, the trio had more than a bit of the stripped down street energy of the Los Angeles's early punk movement. They shared the stage with the Ramones and Mink Deville during their infamous US "Magical Blistering Tour," played the Punk Palace and the legendary Masque in Hollywood, and headlined shows with the Avengers, the Zeros, The Dils, The Screamers and Shock, to name just a few. After the band's break-up in 1978, Peter Case and Paul Collins formed The BREAKAWAYS, and later went on to front the legendary PLIMSOULS and The BEAT, respectively. Following the success of "Hanging On the Telephone," JACK LEE has mostly focused on his songwriting career, releasing an album in 1981. Both Peter and Paul are still recording and touring. PETER CASE's latest album "Let Us Now Praise Sleepy John" (Yeproc 2007) was nominated for a Grammy. This collection, authorized for the first time ever by the three band members, features their 1976 EP (now regarded as a power pop classic), as well as demos and previously unreleased live recordings, REMASTERED and complete with notes and photos. Track listing : 1. One Way Ticket 2. Paper Dolls 3. Hanging On The Telephone 4. When You Find Out 5. Working Too Hard 6. Give Me Some Time 7. Walking Out On Love 8. Thing Of The Past 9. TERRY & THE PIRATES- Too Close For Comfort ( 70s ) -Label:ACADIA Twenty nine years after the release of the original Too Close For Comfort comes the third issue of this priceless and timeless music from San Francisco's own Terry & The Pirates.” Another view: “Probably only remembered today as one of the many bands graced by the guitarwork of John Cipollina following his departure from Quicksilver Messenger Service, and as a footnote in the career of Nicky Hopkins, Terry and the Pirates deserve much greater recognition. Although Cipollina’s feral guitar is undoubtedly essential to their charms, the work of Terry Dolan himself should not be underestimated. His voice is an acquired taste, a strange mixture of David Crosby and Captain Beefheart, but as such, it’s impressively distinctive. Meanwhile, his songwriting mines that same rich vein of American folk which yielded ‘Pride Of Man’ (so memorably covered by Quicksilver). The best songs on this collection of various live and studio recordings are certainly Dolan’s own. Whilst a version of Jackie Wilson’s ‘Higher & Higher’ might be entertainingly audacious, covers of ‘Mystery Train’ and ‘Don’t Do It’ aren’t going to make anybody forget those by The Band, despite some impressive sparring between Cipollina and second guitarist Greg Douglass on the latter. In this context, tracks like ‘Inside and Out’ and ‘Inlaws and Outlaws’ distinguish themselves as fine examples of original Californian rock n’ roll. Even if none of this is especially ground-breaking or epoch-defining music, it’s played with spirit and any fans of West Coast music who might have easily overlooked it should be sure to rectify their mistake. CD $6 SKU:16373

"A lost classic that captures deep soul at its most poignant and resonant." -- AMG"Initially released in 1973 on the homegrown Fungus Records label, it has remained well under the radar for the past 40 years. It is one of the finest examples of early '70s soul I have ever heard." -- Blinded By Sound CD $10 SKU:15260

TEENAGE SHUTDOWN- Vol 4 Im A No Count ( 60s Garage/Punk ) - Label:CRYPTTEENAGE SHUTDOWN All of the snarling garage punk stompers on Teenage Shutdown: I'm a No-Count, subtitled "19 Top Teen Punk Stomp Classics," have previously appeared elsewhere on various-artist compilations. This time, however, the sound quality is mostly superb, with minimal EQing. The transfers were made by Crypt Records' honcho, Tim Warren, using something called a CEDAR system, which reportedly keeps the warmth of the original analog sound of the singles, many of them coming from the colossal 45 rpm collection of Mike "Moptop" Markesich. The CD booklet -- which features just three black-and-white photos and color scans of the original single labels -- features more in-depth commentary than some of the previous liner notes in this series have. (By the way, even though ? & the Mysterians are shown on the cover in the packaging's only color photo, they aren't featured on this disc.) Things start off here with "Bad Woman" by Fallen Angels, a track dating back to 1970, which was a little late in the day for this type of garage churner. As with all that follows, it's primal, raw, screamin' garage rock that doesn't let up. San Antonio, TX's the Outcasts' contribution, the intense "1523 Blair," may have later inspired the space rock group of the same name who released recordings in the '90s that were later compiled for the Voxx label by Spacemen 3's Sonic Boom. The title track, by Ty Wagner With the Scotchmen, falls about midway in the sequence. According to the liner notes, "I'm a No-Count"'s lead singer was from Santa Ana, CA. "I'm a Nothing" by the Magic Plants (from New York) featured a band lineup with a couple of members who later joined the Left Banke. "It's Trash" by the Cave Men (from Key West, FL) is one of the more experimental tracks here, dating back to July 1966, with blistering psych-fuzz guitar and echo-laden vocals. This band later changed their name to the 4th Generation. As with most of the remaining Teenage Shutdown collections, this one is somewhat hit and miss, but overall, it's a solid collection of snarling, rabid garage punk from the mid-'60s. ~ Bryan Thomas, All Music Guide COMP CD $14 SKU:1160

THREE O CLOCK MERRIAN WEBSTER TIME - 22 Psychedelic Sounds from Texas. 66-68Label:CICADELIC RECORDS (USA) By the time 1966 ended, many of the groups in Texas that started out playing British Invasion and folk-rock music, were now immersing themselves in the newly emerging psychedelic music. The five groups that comprise this album reflect the changes that occurred during this period and four of them even changed their names to sound more psychedelic. The Nomads became Smoke, Carrols Mood became The Sights And Sounds, The New Imperials became The Front Page News, and The Boys became The Remaining Few. Represented by twelve tracks on this album, The Nomads/Smoke, started out playing folk-rock music, but by 1967 went psychedelic-as witnessed by their “freak-out” version of “My Little Red Book” replete with backwards tapes. “Carrols Mood” went from singing ballads to surreal songs such as “Mystical Bells”. The Front Page News went from the soul of “Baby Let Me Bang Your Box” to the fuzz drenched “Thoughts and Afterthoughts”. If the 13th Floor Elevators were the epitome of what a Texas psychedelic band was, then the groups on this album were not far behind in trying to emulate that state of existence. Here then are twenty-two tracks compiling the changes that occurred from late 1966 to 1968, when the Texas bands went metaphorically speaking from “Kool-Aid” to “Electric Kool-Aid Acid” COMP CD $12 SKU:13278

TITAN - ITS ALL POP- VA DBL CD ( 70s Power Pop / Glam Pop ) SAALE -Label:NUMERO GROUP From 1978-1981 the Titan label issued only eight records, but over the years their tiny catalog has crawled to the top of power-pop want lists worldwide and appeared on scads of bootleg cassettes, building a legacy to rival L.A.’s Bomp (Suzy Shaw says..."I dont THINK SO!! ") or New York’s Ork.Located in fly-over country, Titan was forced to start their own scene, import their own skinny ties, and scour Missouri for their own talent.Their midwest AM bubblegum roots are apparent in the likes of Gary Charlson, the Secrets*, Arlis!, Gems, Millionaire At Midnight, the Boys, J.P. McClain & the Intruders, Bobby Sky, and Scott McCarl, but Titan was clearly influenced by the glam-punk spit being hocked from the 100 Club stage.30 years since they meekly flopped out their first 7” single, Kansas City’s Titan Records finally returns to record bins everywhere in a deluxe two-disc retrospective with comprehensive 40-page booklet COMP CD $19 SKU:9245

ULTRA CHICKS - VOL 2 ( 60s French pop ) - Label:MATRIX
French-language, female-sung '60s pop and rock on this 24-track collection, subtitled "Lolita Ya-Ya!" Not a name here that'll be familiar to anyone except the French and hard-bitten collectors of the ye-ye style, although there's a novelty song by actress Anna Karina (Serge Gainsbourg's knowingly ludicrous "Roller Girl," which despite the title is in French). You might also recognize the name Gillian Hills, the British actress who starred in Beat Girl, and who offers one of the best songs, a pretty bluesy, menacing item called "Maintenant Il Telephone." Much of this sounds caught between lightweight early-'60s twist music, continental European pop, and mid-'60s mod rock (there's some pretty scorching guitar and organ), performed by one-named singers such as Dani, Ariane, Aline, Elsa, Clothilde, Cleo, Eileen, and Joanna. SPACEMEN 3- Live at the New Morning, Geneva, Switzerland, 18.05.1989 w liners by Sonic Boom -Label:MENTAL GROOVE (SWITZERLAND) Second pressing (regular cardboard edition). We all know and love Spacemen 3. Mental Groove have been exchanging this recording for 30 years and thought it was about time to release it properly. So instead of dealing with the impossible task of finding the words to describe how amazing this record is, let's just hear what Sonic Boom has to say about the release: "I seem to remember this show more distinctly than most, and always did. Spacemen 3 was a band not overly loved in their day. It was tough, or at least uneasy. Musically people thought we were some sort of twisted joke. Which in some ways we were. You needed to be bloody-minded to make this music at that time. The set presented here, is as it was .... except the show was twice this length. We tuned and smoked for almost as long as we played. And then our disenfranchise moment, installed to filter the wheat from the chaff in our audiences -- the sprawling 'SUICIDE' wheeled out here in a long, mischievous version. We slipped away mid-song amongst much fog and dry ice. With taped-down keys and feeding-back guitars propped against our speaker cabs, keeping the song pulsating and screaming. Disappearing back down to the already too-familiar dressing room. We rolled large smokes and cracked fresh drinks. And finally after an extended 'break,' re-appeared on stage. Not to wind down as normal at that juncture, but to re-fire up the piece for a further onslaught. Extending the maelstrom as bloody-mindedly as we could. We always 'sensed' when we were unwanted .... which was most the time we left the cozy confines of our white 'sprinter' van. Never get out of the van .... fucking tigers! But then again .... maybe .... just maybe .... and it's only a maybe .... maybe I don't remember a thing." --Sonic Boom, 2014; Recorded from the mixing desk. Includes liner notes by Sonic Boom. LP $29 SKU:16166

SS-20 -- Dream Life.( rare Voxx 60s style psych )- Label:VOXX rare early BOMP release nearly out out print,Put together Bruce Wagner, an amazingly nuanced guitarist terminally influenced by '60s psychedelic rock, with Madeline Ridley, a goth queen who prayed to Jim Morrison and Syd Barrett almost as often as she slit her own wrists, throw in ace drummer David Winogrond (Skooshny, Davie Allen, Sylvia Juncosa) and ace producer Gary Stern, add astonishing cover versions of "My Eyes Have Seen You" (Doors), "Penetration" (Stooges) and a brach of vampiric originals, and you have this sleeping gem of an album. Fantastic instrumental improvisation nailed to a mesmerizingly gloomy vocal presence makes for an album that, if you haven't heard it, you really should be asking yourself why... [6/86] Greg Shaw Voxx caught the rebounding Sky on a four-song 1986 7-inch shared with soothing/scathing psych punks SS-20, whom the aging guru had first augmented/sabotaged (according to one's point of view) onstage during his unexpected resurgence in Hollywood in the early '80s, when he would climb up unannounced to join every single band of the then-popular garage contingent spearheaded by Greg Shaw's Voxx label and Cavern Club. Originally a kick, it quickly became a drag to the young Beatle-booted hipsters, and a band called Purple Electricity was cooked up as a stake through Sky's hollow heart. Featuring the McDonald brothers from Redd Kross and Primate Brian Corrigan on drums, the intent was to daze and confuse Mr. Saxon, as well as any sycophants still blindly following. Drawing heavily from familiar '70s metal tunes, the blatantly unrehearsed music of the March '86 show documented on Private Party is matched with a disconnected and distracted Sky, recorded in glorious walkmanorama. Just to cap off this travesty, all of the songs — including indisputable covers — are credited to SS Saxon. LP $8 SKU:2299

STALIN- Stalinism - (Rare 80s Japanese punk ) Label:NOISE NOT MUSIC One of the most seminal Japanese punk bands ever, Stalin formed in 1980 and blew away all previous attempts at Japanese punk thanks to their frontman Michiro Endo's crazy on-stage perfomances and their unique style. Even though by the release of their first LP 'Trash' in 1981 Stalin moved towards a more hardcore/punk direction, which resulted in whats known to be their best work - the classic 'Stop Jap' LP from 1982, Stalin's early singles are one of the best examples of what would be 15 years later defined as killed by death punk rock. Originally released in 1987, the 'Stalinism' LP collected their first flexi 7", the 'Stalinism' EP, the 'Fish Inn' flexi single, along with 'Chicken Farm' their contribution to the legendary international hardcore compilation 'Welcome To 1984', to whom Stalin owe a good portion of their cult status. A great reissue for all Japanese punk fans out there. LP $22 SKU:16413

STARVING WEIRDOS W/ TOM CARTER & SHAWN DAVID MCMILLEN- Live At The Accident ( acid burned modern psych ) - SALE Label:BLACKEST RAINBOW RECORDS Crazy 3-way collaboration from some of America's best underground musicians. Charalambides' Tom Carter is joined by Shawn McMillen, sometime member of Warmer Milks and Ash Castles On The Ghost Coast, with the added power of Starving Weirdos. Side A is a total hypnotic slice of ravaged drone, the four musicians seamlessly blend their own styles of underground bliss outs to sheer perfection. Side B opens with a crazy loop of applause, waving back and forth with a growing repetitive plug-in to then opening it up to create new levels of total sonic weirdness. Slow shimmering black chasms engulf the positivity until it's awash with lo-fi scrapes and buzzing electrical nightmare. The loop eventually drops back in with total far gone chimes, jingling away at acid burnt psychedelic keys and a thundering bass loop. A totally bizarre jam, which just opens more potential ventures up for these artists. Hopefully we'll see more from this collaborative team soon. Limited to 400 in pro-printed wraparound sleeves. LP $12 SKU:11104

Easily one of the best examples of "cock rock" ever put onto wax.

• Long sought after unreleased recordings from this hard-nosed raunchy Detroit-style 70s hard rock band whose 1974 debut album on ABC is highly regarded. STONE ANGEL - ST 180 gram ( rare UK oprivate press ) Label:ACME GRAMOPHONE UK Reissue of mega rare, highly sought-after, UK hippie psych private pressing. This one has a very dark sound - not a million miles away from the first Comus record, but with an earthy recording quality—the whole thing has a definite Wicker Man occult-ish vibe about it. The Stone Angel album lays down the blueprint for regional British psych/folk with songs built around local legends and mythologies and the kind of dosed settings of 12-string guitar, jaws harp, flute, mandolin, dulcimer and electric guitar that would perfectly balance an ancient, magical atmosphere with the kind of ritual settings of Japan’s Ghost. Fragile male and female vocals and the use of tape and effects make this a truly radical, breakthrough set, with a crude, straight to tape appeal and an overwhelmingly dusty, out of time, dreamlike/drone atmosphere. No filler, every song cuts straight to the heart of the hidden reverse. An all-time masterpiece, very highly recommended! Not many copies available for this one. 180 gram vinyl pressing, shrink-wrapped LP $19 SKU:16076

STONE GARDEN-ST ( Featuring new artwork and insert with photos and liner notes. ) -Label:OUTSIDER RECORD Stone Garden were a heavy psychedelic band from the Midwest, famous releasing in 1969 one of the best heavy-psych 45s ever, 'Oceans Inside Me', for the same label as the legendary Fraction (Angelus). Between 1969 and 1971 they also recorded a bunch of tracks which never saw the light of day until the mid-90s, when the great Rockadelic label issued them in a limited edition vinyl album. Out of print for many years, we present a new edition of the Stone Garden album f Furious, ultra-primitive hard-psychedelic rock in Sabbath and Blue Cheer vein, highly recommended to anyone into obscure 70s doom and hard-rock sounds. LP $24 SKU:15607

STORMTROOPER - Im A Mess- 70s punk ) (SAALE )-Label:RAVE UP Stormtrooper formed and disbanded in a fury in 1975 before punk rock arose out of the ashes of glam and pub rock! Their debut single "I'm A Mess" was described by the British music press as "the sound of a commuter being shoved under a tube train in the rush hour, one for howling at the moon and a tale of drunkenness in the wild of Soho" The band formed at the bar in the Marquee Club by British front man Nigel Hutchings and bassist Jeff Piccinini who recruited John Pilka on guitar and Mike Lee on drums. They recorded a demo of 4 songs in August of 1975 and then signed with Corruption Management on the Portobello Road for a couple of pints and some distant promises. The band played only one gig at the Bath Pavilion, then split-up. This, ladies and gentleman, was before the birth of punk rock and the tracks of this anthology are pure "punk" before... punk!!!!
