SMITH, PATTY - Jazz Workshop, Boston, January 9th 1976 DBL CD SALE -Label:KLONDIKE RECORDS (UK) Patti Smith is an iconic and celebrated artist whose cultural standing in America remains resolute and heavily influential. Smith, Jay Dee Daugherty, Lenny Kaye, Ivan Kral and Richard Sohl headed out on their first U.S. tour to promote the release of their debut album Horses, released only two months earlier in November 1975. Their legendary appearance at Boston's Jazz Workshop displays the trademark riotous atmosphere of New York's punk ethos with Smith's habitual expletives being hurled around before WBCN could pull the plug on a live broadcast. An anticipating crowd, hungry for danger and provocation from the rising star who at one point comments "I don't know if we're still on air..." Luckily, she was and with continued excesses after their euphoric show closer with Van Morrison's "Gloria," John Cale punctures the low ceiling of the Workshop stage with the neck of his guitar, prompting the end of the show and the end of the live broadcast. SPEAKEASY- ST (great British R&B style ) - Label:PAISLEY ARCHIVE UK If ever the term ‘Super Group’ applied to a band on the Mod scene, it applies to Speakeasy. Featuring Brett “Buddy” Ascott (The Chords/The Rage/Pope), Simon Stebbing (Purple Hearts/RT3), Mark le Gallez (The Risk/Thee Jenerators), Fay Hallam (Makin Time/Prime Movers/Fay Hallam Trinity) and the late, great, Mike Evans (The Action/Mighty Baby), the band came together as the ‘House Band’ for the Mod Aid 20 single in January 2005. They subsequently recorded a glorious EP at Toe Rag for Biff Bang Pow Records later that same year featuring one song each from Simon, Mark & Fay (included on this CD). Sadly Mike is no longer with us, but with Mic Stonier taking up bass duties (and Fay busy on other projects) the nucleus reassembled to record a heartfelt cover of The Actions’ “Shadows and Reflections” in tribute to Mike, and carried on to record enough material for Speakeasy to release this full length CD on the Paisley Archive imprint of Detour Records. So what is it like? There’s a real British R&B feel on some of the tracks (‘Let’s Roll’) and some great musicianship too (‘Your Precious Ways’), with a number of songs that could be contenders for A-sides of singles (‘The Blues Have Got Me’, ‘Red Wine Song’, ‘Soul Searching’, ‘Love and Understanding’) and Fay’s Hammond masterpiece, ‘Seeds’. Yoursurely know this legendary psychedelic album, recorded in 1968 and never yet officially reissued until now. The album was recorded in the Ingeson studios, who had just bought the newest equipment and thought Speakers were the perfect band to work with it and try to get the best results from the equipment. The Ingeson guys offered the studios to the band for no money, only asking them to mention in the album that it was recorded there, so to make a publicity for the studios. Hence the title of the album "In the marvelous world of Ingeson"!!! Musically, the album is as psychedelic as you may dream from a South American '68 album. With acid guitar, sound effects, playing with repetitive sounds and incisive lyrics in Spanish language. A total masterpiece of weird psychedelia that went nearly unnoticed in Columbia even being the Speakers the bigger name in that country's rock scene of the 60's. What makes this release even better is the deluxe treatment it had. Fantastic remastered sound, a 7x 7 CD cover including a 20 page full colour booklet (20x20 too!), and even a replica of the supposed LSD bubblegum that was included in the original album. ST. THOMAS PEPPER SMELTER - Soul & Pepper mini slv replica ( Peruvian 60s psych freakbeat )- Label:LION PRODUCTIONS (USA) & REPSYCHLED RECORDS (Peru) The first official reissue of this much-bootlegged classic South American psychedelic freakbeat album, recorded in 1969 by Peruvian band The (St. Thomas) Pepper Smelter. Perhaps the story of the band is not well known, but their achievements were great—and international: editions of their sole LP were produced in Peru, Mexico, Brazil and Ecuador, and 45rpm singles were published in Mexico and Greece. St. Thomas Pepper Smelter was formed by Gerardo Manuel Rojas on vocals and tambourine, Beto Tataje on rhythm guitar and lead guitar, Juan Carlos Barreda on bass and vocals, Carlos Manuel Barreda on drums and backing vocals (all from the famous group Los Shains), and Freddy Macedo on keyboards. Their first single was a cover of ‘Purple Haze’ b/w one of their own compositions, ‘A New Summer.’ The band then began to record their only LP. That album contains twelve tracks—six written by the band, and the other half cover versions. The band's music could be described as freak beat; in many ways, it is a preview of the garage /surf style of Los Shain's, heading towards the heavy psychedelic rock of Gerardo Manuel & El Humo. At the time, St. Thomas Pepper Smelter simply called it “underground music.” Gerardo’s voice is soft in the band’s own songs, and aggressive on the cover tunes; his guitar style oozes fuzz. The foundation of bass and drums by the brothers Barreda is very powerful and strong; and the songs benefit from the layers of keyboard played by Freddy Macedo. This fully licensed, hand-numbered, limited edition CD release comes in a mini-LP sleeve replica of the original album art; it also comes with a replica of an original poster; a replica of an original color photo of the band. SUNFOREST- The Sound of(UK Acid folk‘69) 20-page booklet with additional insider information on the band, & lyrics-Label:ACME LION There was once a band called Sunforest, who recorded a splendid album in 1969. The record is (as has been said elsewhere) a unique compendium of UK acid folk with a popsike feel, sporting harpsichord and (somewhat) medieval-tinged arrangements integrated into electric and acoustic folk-esque tunes. But one thing must be said straight away: the Sunforest album is not at all twee—the songs are far too clever, and the production (by legendary producer Vic Coppersmith-Heaven) has far too much depth—we say this despite cover art that seems to have misled people since the album was released. Worthy of special mention is the phenomenal folk/funk vibe-fest 'Magician In The Mountain,' which has made this LP the object of desire of many a DJ and a sampler. And, of course, lest we forget, the Sunforest album supplies the answer to the recent burning question (for those of you living in the UK): “What’s that song on the Marks and Spencer TV advert—the one with Twiggy and those other girls in it, singing, "I want to marry a lighthouse keeper.” Why, it’s ‘Lighthouse Keeper,’ of course! The sound of Sunforest was enlivened by contributions from exceptional and experienced studio musicians. On this album, you can hear supple work from bass guitarist par excellance Herbie Flowers (it’s his bass that makes Lou Reed's ‘Walk on the Wild Side’ one of the best late-night songs ever written; he also played bass on the Serge Gainsbourg’s “Histoire de Melody Nelson”). He was joined for the Sunforest sessions by his compatriot in the Jean-Claude Vannier Orchestra, guitarist on an incredible variety of UK number one hit songs (fifty-nine to be exact), including the Kink’s “You Really Got Me,” Thunderclap Newman’s "Something in the Air,’ and Jane Birkin and Serge Gainsbourg’s orgasmic classic ‘Je t'aime... moi non plus’: session-guitarist extraordinaire (and the mastermind behind the Lord Sitar and “Sitar Beat” albums), Big Jim Sullivan. Yes, here on the Sunforest album these two titans of UK rock can be found working with another legend, Vic Smith, on what turned out to be the only release from a trio of unpretentious girls, discovered in a cafe. TOAD - ST ( fantastic 70s psych/ hard rock ) w rare tracks -Label:FLAWED GEMS The fantastic debut album by this hard rocking band from Switzerland (featuring two members of Brainticket and Italian guitarist Vic Vergeat) was released early 1971 by the Hallelujah label (and RCA Victor in UK). The music is a raw and very energetic mix of early heavy metal, blues and psychedelia, compared to early Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple and Jimi Hendrix but much intensive. UGLY DUCKLINGS - Somewhere INSIDE ( W historic interview and radio segments ) -Label:PACEM UGLY DUCKLINGS AKER ENTERTAINMENT (Canada) January 1967 appearance on CHUM radio in the Ugly Ducklings’ hometown of Toronto. Framed by on-air interview segments are six live in studio recordings, three demos, and one alternate mix. The live in studio tracks are all of good fidelity, and of the familiar numbers also recorded for their lone album, ‘Nothin’’ features a more elastic and loose Roger Mayne lead guitar, while this ‘My Little Red Book’ is a bit faster and more like the Love version. Another of the tracks listed as “live” is ‘My Watch’ which is an original Dave Bingham and Glynn Bell composition and has a solid funky blues quality to it. The cover of ‘I’m A Man’ did turn up previously in Sundazed’s Garage Beat ’66 compilation series, but it goes well with the short take on ‘Home In Your Heart’. Of the three songs listed as demos, all are covers. There is also a great alternate mix of ‘Postman’s Fancy,’ which has more psychedelic effects than the original side. Their second album Leere Hnde was originally released on the legendary KUCKUCK label in 1970. The English version, called Empty Hands, has never been available on vinyl. There was a small number of white label copies pressed by Deutsche Grammophon in 1970/71 to solicit releases by Polyram companies around the world, but as there was no interest, the label dropped the idea. So, now it is the first time ever, that the English version of Leere Hnde is being pressed on vinyl, with the original Kuckuck label and number, the original tracklisting order and the cover as it would have been adjusted for the English version.
