BERGMAN, ERIC- Modern Phonography/Sending Out Signals-Modern Phonography/Sending Out Signals (1978 private press by Patron SAints mainman) DBL Label:PATRON SAINTS Rare 1978 folk rock private press solo album from Patron Saints mainman. As part of Eric Bergman's exhaustive overview of his gentle but continual ramble through rock & roll life over the decades, the double-CD package of his two solo albums from the late '70s and early '80s lives up to the extensive work he did for various eras of the Patron Saints, not to mention Garrison. Garrison feature throughout the first solo album, Modern Phonography, released in 1978 and including the song that would be Garrison's own sole release during their lifetime, "It's in de Blood." Bergman's ear for playful arrangements is evident throughout Modern Phonography, a brisk folk-rock album that Dan Fogelberg fans of the time might have found too spiky and most incipient new wavers too mellow, a record that finds its own logic. Sending Out Signals, surfacing four years later, embraced said new wave in its own understated way -- graphics feature computer typography and punch cards -- and is definitely a crisper, punchier album all around, as reflective of an older generation's embrace of newer possibilities, as everyone from the Police (a definite role model for songs like "You Can't Have Your Cake and Eat It Too") to Steve Miller showed around the same time. A slightly thin sound throughout betrays the low-budget circumstances, but Bergman and his collaborators give it all a fair bash and he sounds in fine voice. Each disc on the reissue contains a variety of bonus tracks, with the Modern Phonography cuts reaching back almost five years previously to include otherwise unheard songs via solo demos like "Borrowed Time" and "Fish Out of Water." The Sending Out Signals extras similarly reach back a touch, with a Garrison version of the title track recorded in 1979. AllMusic Review by Ned Raggett CD $10 SKU:24626
NAZZ- 13th and Pine (60s early Rundgren )Label:Renaissance Records A collection of odds and sods, rarities and obscurities, Distortions' 13th & Pine is designed for the obsessive Todd Rundgren collectors out there, and, in that sense, it satisfies, since there is a lot of weird, unheard music here. CD $10 SKU:23539
PATRON SAINTS- Proto Bohob ( rare 1969 private press U.S psych folk)-Label:PATRON SAINTS The Patron Saints' 1969 album Fohhoh Bohob is considered by many collectors to be one of the most highly sought-after privately-pressed records ever released. Only 100 copies were produced originally, now fetching prices of $2500 and beyond. In the early months of 1969, The Patron Saints laid down various demo versions of all of the songs which ultimately appeared on Fohhoh Bohob; this CD contains these previously unreleased gems.
Review
One of our favorite lost US psychedelic folk LPs ever is the original Patron Saints LP, a cheerily twisted New York rarity from 1969 (LP and CD reissues BOTH by the way). This CD offers up 16 previously unreleased tracks from 1969 that represent all the demos and early versions of the original LP tracks and more. Wonderfully unsettling stuff. -- Aether Records Mailorder Catalog
Patron Saints-Proto Bohob: A whole CD of demos from 1969 by this obscure acid guitar folk band from New York. Featuring different versions and different tracks to their scarce "Fohhoh Bohob" album, this is a collector's wet dream... -- The Freak Emporium/Delerium Records CD $10 SKU:24624
PATRON SAINTS- Latimer Sessions (rare 1970 private press U.S psych folk)-Label:PATRON SAINTS This CD compilation contains all of the songs from the Latimer sessions, plus a number of bonus goodies. Kirk s lovely Love Is A Game appears here for the first time. Early versions of Spring Forth and Goodbye, recorded sometime in late 1970, are next; in Saint history, they are the only recordings made with me, John, Kirk, Joe and Jon as a five-man band. Six rare live cuts follow, recorded between July and September of 1971. Finally, we ve included two tracks from our 1973 reunion session, a remake of Doin It All Myself and the never-before-recorded April s Fool. CD $10 SKU:24625

ALIENS PSYCHOS & WILD THINGS- Vol.3 -1965 - 70 (Monster 60's garage from Virginia)-Label:ARCANIA Monster 60's garage from Virginia--much of it unreleased COMP CD $10 SKU:24619
ALIENS PSYCHOS & WILD THINGS-Vol.FORE (unreleased 60's VA garage)Label:ARCANIA Fore -- that's Volume 4 if you're counting. Arcania's Aliens series is primarily known for illuminating the shadow world of Virginia's mid-to-late '60s garage and psychedelic bands. The last Vol. (it's been almost 5 years) included half a dozen cuts from outside of VA. This is the reverse of that. Only half a dozen of the tracks on Fore are from the Old Dominion State. The roots of proto-psychedelia are to be heard on this compilation's first two tracks. Hollywood unknowns from 1965, never released until Arcania tracked them down: 'The Wind Blows Your Hair' is the same song recorded by The Seeds two years later. 'Don't Be Afraid' may have a very famous musician on it. 'It' is all in the notes of our 20-page booklet, along with loads of other info. FUZZ is the buzz word for this release, but there is some pop and jangle as well. All told, 7 of the 25 songs are previously unreleased. Only one song out of the batch has ever been reissued. Those that came out in the '60s are virtually unknown, even to most collectors. Unknown for now. But here comes Aliens Psychos & Wild Things... Fore! 20-page booklet. 25 songs. 74 minutes of music." Aliens Psychos & Wild Things Volume Fore is a bit different than some of the other fuzz blaster 45 comps I've written about recently. For this selection, we start in the mid 60s. Mostly these are forward looking garage bands with some guitar bite. By the time we get to the 1967 acts, the garage goes full-on psychedelic

BLISS-ST (Excellent 1969 PSYCH HARD ROCK )- Label:OUT SIDER Psychedelic hard-rock / heavy blues with loud fuzz-wah guitar and powerful drumming by this power-trio from Arizona, originally released in 1969.
Bliss was born from the ashes of garage band The Sect. Legendary radio DJ and producer Hadley “Who Loves You Madley” (the first black disc jockey from Arizona) took them under his wing and produced some recordings. By the end of 1968, the five members of The Sect graduated and decided to break up.
Soon, they reformed as a trio with Martin (bass), Reed (guitar) and Aldred (drums). Reed came up with a new name, BLISS, which not only reflected his spiritual interest but it was also more in vein with the new psychedelic sounds of artists like Cream, Blue Cheer or Hendrix.
Under Murrell’s guidance, the trio recorded a full album, released on L.A.-based Canyon Records in 1969. Canyon, home to artists like Doris Duke or Swamp Dogg, was a label more focused on R&B, soul and funk than psychedelia so, not surprisingly, the album slipped through the cracks.
It wasn’t until a couple of decades later that Bliss was re-discovered by psych collectors, who were attracted to the album’s heavy & bluesy psychedelic sound, highlighted by Reed's hard fuzz-wah guitarand Aldred's powerful drumming. The album offers a mix of great self-penned tracks (including two by Murrell) such as “Visions”, “Ride The Ship Of Fools” and “Cry Of Love” – which bears a striking resemblance to The Zombies “Time Of The Season”! – plus a few covers (Joe Tex, B.B. King, Johnny Guitar Watson…)
*Newly remastered sound.
*Heavy cardboard sleeve and insert with liner notes.

MERRELL FANKHAUSER and the HAIKU BAND -Visitor From 2000 AD (west coast surf-psych legend)-Label: This is an obscure CD release from west coast surf-psych legend, Merrell Fankhauser. Released right before the year 2000 hit and barely anyone noticed—it is a sad and beautiful world we live in. To some folks, this is the best thing Fankhauser has released since his Mu days! The track "Under A Maui Moon" is a mind-melter in particular. This recording is a breathtaking mixture of instrumental rock-jazz-surf-psychedelic flights with vocals inserted in the perfect places to complete the circle of musical life. This music speaks of the ancient Hawaiian mysteries that lie asleep waiting to be awoken. A rare and collectible CD. Very limited micro pressing. And more to the point, Fankhauser is very deservedly a legendary figure of the American psychedelic movement.CD $10 SKU:21223
ACTION -Rolled GOld (legendary 60s psych)Label:GUERRSEN The Action never became stars, but Rolled Gold justifies the legend.” - David Fricke (Rolling Stone Magazine) •Digitally remastered from the master tapes. •Insert with photos and detailed liner notes by Jason Barnard (Shindig!). •“It's as if Paul Weller time-travelled back to 1967 and wrote the best songs of his career. Every track is a fully realized melodic and lyrical statement.” – Matt Collar (allmusic.com)The legendary 1967-68 recordings by UK mod band THE ACTION, registered when they were in transition from mod-beat to full-blown psychedelia, just prior to becoming MIGHTY BABY. Originally recorded as a set of demos with the intention of obtaining an album deal which inexplicably never materialized, “Rolled Gold” is a collection of brilliant songs, melancholic yet powerful. The Action’s classic line-up of Reg King, Alan ‘Bam’ King, Michael Evans and Roger Powell is augmented with the inclusion of new members Martin Stone on guitar and Ian Whiteman on flute / organ. All of them are playing their hearts out: superb harmonies, great guitar work and clever arrangements which show the influence of bands like The Byrds and the psychedelic sounds that were coming from the West Coast and UK as well as jazz giants like Coltrane. Always the stuff of legend, The “Rolled Gold” tapes were shelved at the time, not released until 1997 when the Dig The Fuzz label discovered them and did a limited LP/CD run. Out of print on vinyl for many years, we present a new vinyl edition. If you dig the psychedelic era of SMALL FACES, PRETTY THINGS, THE WHO, plus THE CREATION, NAZZ, TOMORROW, BLOSSOM TOES, THE END or TRAFFIC…look no further.

CLOWN- Lord of the Ringside (70s prog rock rarity)-Label:ANAZITISI RECORDS Clown were an excellent progressive rock sextet which had the luck (???) to produce only one single in early 1972 for CBS, containing the tracks 'Lord of the Ringside' and ‘Rumania'. The band’s line up was including the classic rock core of guitar-bass-drums augmented by the sax-flute-keyboards progressive touches. Superb musicianship, beautiful orchestration and rhythm changes which flirt with the late 60’s psychedelia and early 70’s British folk rock.

FINCHLEY BOYS -Lost Tributes (8 unrel. heavy psych tracks recorded 1968 - 1971)Label:ANAZITISI “Lost Tributes” consists of eight unreleased heavy psychedelic tracks recorded between 1968 and 1971 by this prolific Illinois band. Included is the scheduled, but never materialized 7” single from 1969, which would have contained different, punchy and more wild, recordings of two Finchley Boys standards, 'Hooked' and 'Outcast'. It also includes the almost 9 minute long 'Who goes there?', perhaps the most psychedelic offering by the band. LP $34 SKU:20821

JERUSALEM ST -(1972) Insert with history of the group, lyrics and photos (HEAVY ROCKLabel:LION “Sledgehammer-heavy masterpiece of underground British rock!” —Classic Rock Magazine“Big fat chords, wailing guitar, punch-drunk bass and straight-ahead solid drums all strutting in your face like some massive guy you just don't want to f**k with.” —Head Heritage"I made the record because they are bloody good and it seems a shame for their sound not to be recorded... right now there's a rawness and excitement..." Ian Gillan, in Disc & Music Echo, January 29th, 1972Heavy UK hard rock album from 1972, produced by Deep Purple's legendary frontman, Ian Gillan, originally released on the Decca/Deram label. It was Gillan who said of them: “Not many bands really excite me. But this one’s so raw and completely unpretentious. They make the biggest, bloodiest noise you can imagine, tempered with moments of extreme emotion.” And, of course, he’s right—the music is a menacing combination of over-the-top vocals and screaming lead guitars that could easily pass for something from the early British heavy metal scene—or something from the emotional hard core scene of the mid-1990's ('Primitive Man'). A favorite among vinyl collectors, the album is presented here in its ultimate glory, with all tracks direct from the original master tapes, housed in a high quality old-style gatefold cover; insert has liner notes written by bassist Paul Dean + rare photos. Stickered to indicate that this is the purple vinyl edition. Rough, raw, and doomy!

PROTAGONISTS-1983 - 1985 (Rare mid 80s Chicago Punk) Label:ALONA’S DREAM Rare mid-1980's suburban Chicago (Naperville!) punk Thirteen song LP includes the band’s hard to find 7” alongside unreleased studio tracks, demos & live cuts. Naperville’s Protagonists formed in the wake of the first wave of Chicago hardcore punk. Instead of being inspired by the first generation weirdo Chicago punks like Silver Abuse and Tutu & The Pirates or the hardcore legion that followed (AOF, ROTA, Negative Element, etc.), Protagonists drew their motivation from sources as diverse as punk icons Buzzcocks, The Dickies and The Damned to prime era 50’s and 60’s teen anthems (Buddy Holly, Dell Shannon, and The Monkees). The group formed in a Naperville high school, played local talent shows and teen dance parties, and hooked up with older kids (Reaction Formation) who helped them get radio gigs and put out a tape recorded by Phil Bonnet, influential recording engineer and long-time friend. The band followed up with a 7” for Reaction Formation’s label Nova which garnered positive reviews but they were shortly after pulled apart by the usual strains on the end of adolescent trajectories. This compilation gathers their original tape, unheard outside of the suburban Chicago teen punk scene, and pairs it with the songs from their hard-to-find 7” EP (originally pressed in 1,000 copies in 1985). The B-side features basement demos of original songs recorded by the band as well some great covers which show they could rock as a punk dance band.Limited Edition 160 gram blue vinyl (500 pressed) in a 20pt board jacket with full color printed inner sleeve featuring (lots of) previously unseen photos of the band and detailed liner notes. LP $28 SKU:23390
SPIRITWOOD -ST original sealed copies of this private press Acid Archives fave!Label:Tanrydoon Private pressing from 1979, first released on the Tanrydoon label out of New Berlin, Pa. Original sealed copies, which contain a lyric insert. “Hippie-flavored rural folk form this duo, who write good songs and deliver tight male-female vocal harmonies. It sounds almost a decade earlier than the release year, and recurring influences from UK folk (like Clearing) contribute further to the sense of displacement. Occasional use of piano and a strong sense of melody have made for some comparisons with Mellow Candle, and it’s a testimony to Spiritwood’s quality that this doesn’t seem too outlandish. There are a few moves towards CSN domains, and late 1960’s westcoast in general, which should have been explored more. The guitar arrangements (with banjo on two trad-ish numbers) interplay seamlessly with the strong vocals, and the personal commitment makes up for a certain lack of artistic direction.” —Acid Archives LP $28 SKU:23691
VIBRAVOID -Politics of Ecstasy (German psych heads Electric Prunes/Pink Floyd style!) BLUE VINYL Label:ANAZITISI GREECE “"A heavy storm of psychedelic sounds, shapes, and colors by Düsseldorf, Germany, based psychedelic-heads, Vibravoid. File somewhere between the Electric Prunes and early Pink Floyd. This studio album is basically a musical journey through the ideas of US Acid Guru Timothy Leary and his book, The Politics of Ecstasy.” Stunning new edition of classic 2008 album "The Politics Of Ecstasy" to celebrate the group’s 15th anniversary. Features new cover artwork and re-mastered audio tracks. The album is partly re-recorded and fully re-mixed for maximum audio pleasure. This edition also presents for the first time the original recording of ‘Late As A Morning’, a charming piece of relaxed psychedelia that was first released in a different version on the flip of the ‘Doris Delay’ 7" EP from 2004. Limited edition of 500 copies. “"A heavy storm of psychedelic sounds, shapes, and colors by Düsseldorf, Germany, based psychedelic-heads, Vibravoid.
