MANKEY, EARL- - Mau Mau /Crazy orig 1978 pressing! w pic slv.Label:BOMP/Exhibit J (Orig pressing of BOMP spinoff label, Exhibit J) rare by legendary producer “ In this one short song, there is enough pure-pop majesty to fill your week's quota of such grand music. Earle Mankey was a founding member of the odd new-wave 80's band, Sparks. Mankey has some serious production credits to his name too, including Concrete Blonde's first album.
"Mau Mau" begins with a jungle drum beat and a chorus of low voiced fellows singing "Ugachukka, ugachukka" over and over again. The song makes an abrupt left turn when Mankey begins singing about an African "...who can take his love any way he can, by the point of spear, by the point of knife" in his distant pop voice over a tinkley synth sound. Mankey builds layer upon layer in the chorus, with guitars ultimately building to a "Baba O'Rielly" guitar riff. OLIVERS - I Saw What You d Did (60s garade-Label:BREAK A WAY BW BEEKER ST. Single Release with original Picture Sleeve: "The Olivers, from Fort Wayne, Indiana evolved out of the Serfmen, a very popular band in the region, that had already released two nowadays rare 45's on their own Nemfres label. When the Serfmen signed with Dino Enterprises, an Indianabased agency in 1966, original member Greg Church left the band and was replaced by Billy Franze from another local group, The Unexpected. The Band then moved in a more British invasion direction for their music and outfit and changed name to "The Olivers". The line-up at the time consisted of Jay Penndorf (guitar, vocals), Chuck Hamrick (drums), Carl Aldrich (keyboards, vocals) and Billy Franze (bass, vocals). The group's sole 7" release, 'I Saw What You Did' b/w 'Beeker Street' was recorded at Cap Studios in Portage, MI and was released with a Picture Sleeve later that year on the local Phalanx Label. The single got picked up by RCA Records for nationwide release and is rated today as one of the best and most exciting double sided major label garage 45s of the 1960s. BORN LOSERS- CYCLE GUITARS (Davie Allen style)SAALE!-Label:MEAN DISPOSITION In these times of copious record releases, it was sort of strange that the Born Losers -a popular and already veteran band, with three excellent and successful singles under their belt- had still not waxed an album. It was not a matter of indolence, since their members were involved in all sorts of side projects, and their first LP confirms that the Losers were getting ripe for top-rank R'n'R. The results are exceptional indeed. Far from their early influences -namely, the sound of Davie Allan & The Arrows-, the band retains its peculiar sixties flavour, but their references have increased. The clear Arrows influence from their beginnings has now been replaced by ideas from the Challengers or the sound of the Ventures in their late Dolton records/early Liberty waxings: raw R'n'R, allied with pop melodies, jazzy touches and film music, without ever falling into corniness. Featuring the monster breakbeat on 'The Sorcerer Of Isis'. Formed in Detroit in 1968, Power Of Zeus became the first rock band to be signed by Motown subsidiary label Rare Earth. The group drew inspiration from British hard rock and heavy metal giants like Cream, Black Sabbath, and Led Zeppelin when they created this well-produced, seminal post-hard rock album. After 'The Gospel According To Zeus', the group never made another album and the band slipped into obscurity, until it was discovered by the hip hop diggers. The drum beat from 'The Sorcerer Of Isis' has been one of the most sampled in hip-hop music, including KRS-One, Kanye West, Jay-Z, Cyprus Hill, A Tribe Called Quest and Eminem to name a few. QUICK, BILL -MARAVILLOSA GENTE (Hippie Acid folk weirdness) Outer carton slim case CD-Label:GUERSSEN Mysterious Bill Quick..this guy was son of North-American dad and Venezuelan mum, and landed in Madrid in the early 70s, spending most of his time playing music and manufacturing leather belts and other stuff that he later sold at the popular Rastro flea market in Madrid, meeting point for all hippies of the time. He somehow got in touch with famous producer Alain Milhaud, who got really impressed by his work and quickly offered him a deal for recording a long-play to be released in Milhauds own Explosion label. Then Bill recruited some of top studio musicians and foreign friends who were also living in Madrid at the time; the list of people who play on the recordings is impressive: Salvador Dominguez & Chema Pellico (ex-Cerebrum), Rafa Galvez (Vainica Doble), Frank Rojas (Sangre). Jess Lam (Jess & James).. and up to eleven musicians joined Bill in the recording studio. As a result, "Maravillosa gente" (Beautiful people) was recorded. Ranging from beautiful, introspective, acoustic solo tracks like "Beautiful People", "Only the weather" or the acid-folk of "Winters gonna come" to full backing-band hard-edged ones like "Take me away", "Somebody" and the folk-rock sounding of "With you, Lord" or "I sing this song", the album is a real treat from start to finish. It has an awesome sound and amazing production (it was recorded at one of the most advanced Spanish recording studios at the time), along with top musicianship and Bills amazing songwriting. A real big ticket that was absolutely ignored in Spain at the time, and even today remains unknown to most of folk-rock collectors and fans. Curious enough, the album got released in Brazil as well (with poor sales again), with a different cover artwork. Now this is reissued for the first time, including a booklet with pictures and detailed liner notes telling the wonderful and strange story of this mysterious musician and carefully remastered sound. TELESCOPES-STONE TAPE (shoegaze psych-Label:COLD SPRING The 10th album from The Telescopes is full of wall-to-wall psychedelic drones, swaying chants, trance-inducing shoegaze and "suspended-in-space magnificence." ~Julian Cope. 'Stone Tape' is a concept album inspired by "Stone Tape Theory" (or "residual haunting"), theorized by Thomas Charles Lethbridge in 1961. The archaeologist, parapsychologist and explorer developed the idea that inanimate materials can absorb energy from living beings, and that this mental electrical energy, released during emotional or traumatic events, could somehow be "stored" in such materials and "reproduced" under certain conditions. The hypothesis has been known as "Stone Tape Theory" since the cult 1972 TV screenplay 'Stone Tape' by Nigel Neale. TRAFFIC SOUND - Virgin (1969 Peruvian hard rock/ psych ) Label:MUNSTER The second LP by Traffic Sound, released in 1969, is one of the masterpieces of Latin rock.
