LEOPOLD, PERRY - CHRISTIAN LUCIFER (60s father of acid folk) - Label:GEAR FAB Long lost LP from the father of Acid Folk. '...a masterpiece ... one of the most artistic, intellectually mature, and haunting albums of its era.' -- All Music GuideReview :Although his incredibly rare first album, Experiment in Metaphysics, was a sensational and dynamic slice of progressive acid folk, Perry Leopold took a phenomenal leap forward on the follow-up, 1973's Christian Lucifer. (It is a small miracle that the recording ever saw the light of day, since the studio at which it was recorded was sold and then closed, and all the master tapes from the sessions were erased and used again, leaving only a few mixdown copies.) The songs on the first album, while all strong individually, didn't quite hold together, but Christian Lucifer is conceptually a whole, impossible to imagine as anything other than what it is. Leopold's melodies again shine like slowly uncovered gems. Complex melodic lines and protracted vocal melodies stretch and build ominously, like the sight of a wise, enigmatic monk concealed beneath a woolen cloak. The religious reference is not an empty simile. If the songs on his first album came across as parables or ancient narrative tales, then Christian Lucifer is a collection of hymns, prayers, and litanies conflicted with the dualities of life, full of metaphysical depth. Whereas the first album stuck to the folk basics, this second album was stunningly produced. Gorgeous layers of acoustic guitars, bass, clavinets, bassoons, recorders, oboes, cellos, tabla, MiniMoog, and explosive timpani and bells gave the album a rococo-styled grace and wispy beauty, invoking everything from medieval madrigals to Bach and Vivaldi to Middle Eastern musics to psychedelia and the Doors. And yet, it is none of those things. There are imprecise similarities to Nick Drake's oppressive but beautiful fragility, the theatrical majesty and scope of David Bowie (who is quoted at the beginning of "Serpentine Lane," a dystopian reply of sorts to "Space Oddity," with Leopold's deep voice infusing the music with the same alien quality), and the visionary mystical musings of Merrell Fankhauser and Jeff Cotton's cult band Mu. The foreboding keyboards of "The Windmill" are pulled directly from "Riders on the Storm," but the album is an entirely unique and novel amalgam. There is a Renaissance Fair feel, particularly in songs such as "Sunday Afternoon in the Garden of Delights" and "The Starewell," harsh and pretty at once, and intriguingly arcane. Leopold was, in fact, a troubadour in the truest sense of the word, singing his music for whoever would listen. Ultimately, the album is a very individual struggle with the duality that lies at its heart and is the crux of everything humanity is and does. Christian Lucifer is both terrestrial and ethereal, both tangible and transcendent. It is unquestionably Leopold's masterpiece, and one of the most artistic, intellectually mature, and haunting albums -- released or not -- of its era. ~ Stanton Swihart, All Music Guide CD $12 SKU:18869

MILKWOOD TAPESTRY - ST (60s acid guitar)Label:GEAR FAB Their classic self-titled 1969 LP is a journey into sea ring acid-guitar with touches of soft folky ballads, lots of heavy rock, and some mind-bending manic music that ranges in style from The Incredible String Band to Arthur Lee's Love to Jethro Tull To Fairport Convention to Sgt. Peppers. Fantastic harmonies round out this great album." CD $10 SKU:18871

REDCOATS- Meet The (64-67 POP PSYCH)-Label:DIONYSUS The Redcoats were formed in New Jersey in 1964 and recorded an album's worth of material between 1964 and 1967 that ranges from beat to pop sike. The material sadly never saw the light of day due to a manager who did nothing to advance their career. 35 years later, Bacchus Archives comes to the rescue and releases this 12-song Beatles-inspired gem. MANKEY, EARL- - Mau Mau /Crazy orig 1978 pressing! w pic slv.Label:BOMP/Exhibit J (Orig pressing of BOMP spinoff label, Exhibit J rare by legendary producer “ In this one short song, there is enough pure-pop majesty to fill your week's quota of such grand music. Earle Mankey was a founding member of the odd new-wave 80's band, Sparks. Mankey has some serious production credits to his name too, including Concrete Blonde's first album.
"Mau Mau" begins with a jungle drum beat and a chorus of low voiced fellows singing "Ugachukka, ugachukka" over and over again. The song makes an abrupt left turn when Mankey begins singing about an African "...who can take his love any way he can, by the point of spear, by the point of knife" in his distant pop voice over a tinkley synth sound. Mankey builds layer upon layer in the chorus, with guitars ultimately building to a "Baba O'Rielly" guitar riff. You don't find sublime pop-rock like this everyday, but when you do, it's quite a treat. -- Doug Cornell, 45 RPM $5 SKU:4824

GABBARD, ANDY - Fluff digipack w bonus tracks.(BUFFALO KILLERS- Modern Grunge Fuzz Pop with 60’s aura)Label:ALIVE W four bonus tracks! Brimming with creativity, Fluff by Andy Gabbard, his debut release as a solo artist on Alive Naturalsound, isn't moving beyond what Andy has done, or will continue to do with Buffalo Killers. Sometimes, ultimately, you find yourself with extra moments and more ideas than one band can develop. So naturally, it made perfect sense to give that inward creative need an outlet. Fluff is the end result.Cut in one 12-hour studio session, Andy took on the full responsibility of doing a solo album literally. He played every instrument and wrote everything you hear. Reviving an established relationship with Alive Records, on Fluff you can hear the deeply-solid effects of the grunge genre and mid-'90s 'alternative music' in a sonic gestalt. Exhibiting characteristics of fairly recent genres, as well as some classics that surrounded him during his youth, Fluff breaks barriers of seemingly comfortable, unthreatening music cultivating a physical embodiment of Nirvana, The Smashing Pumpkins, latter Beatles and even Brian Wilson!
Fluff defines Andy's environment, a creative environment... an environment of ultra-dimensional levels. The days of solo albums being released due to further 'artistic development' past a bands catalog of hits, are over. Buffalo Killers continue their successful run and now, it's not running alone. Fluff is the start of something great and fathers the true sonic beauty and the relative nature of one single person and their soundtrack of nearly unending smiles in a sea of tumultuous frowns. - Shawn Abnoxious CD $5 SKU:16539

LEOPOLD, PERRY - Experiments in Metaphysics (70s hippie artifact)Label:GEAR FAB Experiment in Metaphysics is one of the rarest and most sought-after artifacts of the hippie era. Recorded live during a five-hour session in the basement of a shoe-repair shop in June of 1970, most of the 300 original copies of Experiment in Metaphysics were simply given away in one afternoon, yet, inexplicably, bootleg copies of the album later sprang up half-way around the world. The reason for the album's staying power is apparent: the music is gorgeous, first-rate progressive folk. In fact, Side Two of the original LP's label was given the title "Acid-Folk" (the other side was called "Kommercial"), probably one of the very first uses of that term. Perry Leopold creates a proto-gothic ambience full of dark and brooding imagery that is much less cartoonish than most of what passes as "acid," while maintaining that music's visceral punch. Like much of the youth countercultural scene of the times, Leopold can occasionally give into mystical pretentiousness. Experiment in Metaphysics has moments -- namely the spoken-word monologue in the middle of the mostly stellar opening cut, "The Absurd Paranoid" -- of philosophical meandering. Still, even those moments maintain a period charm. Experiment in Metaphysics is exquisitely intelligent and forward-looking. Leopold's mood is much more pious than most music that came out of the psychedelic era, and, indeed, extreme piety tends to be a product of youth, yet there is something aged and wise about Leopold's music. The "Kommercial" side, cryptically subtitled "SMOKE," is conceptually bleak, and after "The Absurd Paranoid," it takes on a much more palpable quality, grounded in experience ("Cold in Philadelphia" and the gorgeous "The 35th of May"). The "Acid-Folk" side (subtitled "DROP") opens with the stark, multi-part title track. Each of the three songs in this section is a virtual mini-suite, with the closing cut, "The U.S.S. Commercial," standing as the album's magnum opus. Experiment in Metaphysics shows some truly progressive and experimental songwriting, even for the time period. Each song, even the instrumental cuts, feels like a story, with beginnings and endings and all kinds of interesting ideas and storylines sandwiched in between. The album is a relic that has not lost one iota of its power. ~ Stanton Swihart CD $10 SKU:7949

MCKENNA MENDELSON BLUES- ST (bluesy psych demo tapes from 1968) -Label:PACEMAKER Another great album from Canada's legendary Paragon label, a set of super bluesy psych demo tapes from 1968; the band’s album “Stink” was received not just as a great album of electric blues, but as some sort of revelation when it appeared in the second half of 1969. Lead guitarist Mike McKenna spent time ('67-'68) in the Ugly Ducklings, but he had already developed a 'local hero' tag by playing hard electric blues as a member of the legendary Luke and the Apostles. Together, he and Joe Mendelson made arrestingly earthy music, which soon attracted another of Toronto's rock gods of the day, bassist Denny Gerrard from the Paupers, whose legendary talents had served him well on the stage of the Monterey Pop Festival, where his work with the Paupers was (and still is) considered a highlight. The material included on this disc, which was demo material that now the band claim was “bootegged” by the legitimate Paragon label (a little revisionist history, perhaps?), is arguably even more rare and interesting than that on their classic McKenna Mendelson Mainline "Stink" album. CD $10 SKU:16071

MILKSHAKES -THEE KNIGHTS OF TRASHE / REVENGE! TRASH FROM THE VAULTS-Label:DAMAGED GOODS When the Pop Rivets broke up in 1980, Billy Childish joined forces with roadie Mickey Hampshire who'd been performing in a band called Mickey & The Milkshakes. RAMONES -Do You Remember Rock 'n' Roll Radio? Live in '95-Label:ROX VOX (UK) Having formed in 1974, by 1995 the Ramones were America's best-known and best-loved punk band. SPEAKEASY- ST (great British R&B style) - Label:PAISLEY ARCHIVE UK If ever the term ‘Super Group’ applied to a band on the Mod scene, it applies to Speakeasy. Featuring Brett “Buddy” Ascott (The Chords/The Rage/Pope), Simon Stebbing (Purple Hearts/RT3), Mark le Gallez (The Risk/Thee Jenerators), Fay Hallam (Makin Time/Prime Movers/Fay Hallam Trinity) and the late, great, Mike Evans (The Action/Mighty Baby), the band came together as the ‘House Band’ for the Mod Aid 20 single in January 2005. They subsequently recorded a glorious EP at Toe Rag for Biff Bang Pow Records later that same year featuring one song each from Simon, Mark & Fay (included on this CD). Sadly Mike is no longer with us, but with Mic Stonier taking up bass duties (and Fay busy on other projects) the nucleus reassembled to record a heartfelt cover of The Actions’ “Shadows and Reflections” in tribute to Mike, and carried on to record enough material for Speakeasy to release this full length CD on the Paisley Archive imprint of Detour Records. So what is it like? There’s a real British R&B feel on some of the tracks (‘Let’s Roll’) and some great musicianship too (‘Your Precious Ways’), with a number of songs that could be contenders for A-sides of singles (‘The Blues Have Got Me’, ‘Red Wine Song’, ‘Soul Searching’, ‘Love and Understanding’) and Fay’s Hammond masterpiece, ‘Seeds’. A great album of quality songs. CD $14 SKU:15752

SPEAKERS, LOS - 7” SIZE SLEEVE W 20 PAGE BOOKLET. Ltd edition IN SAALE LTD ED -Label:SALGAELSO EN EL MARAVILLOSSSO MUNDO INGESON - Limited 1000 copies DELUXE CD-reissue of classic psychedelic album from Comlumbia. As wonderful as can be. Yoursurely know this legendary psychedelic album, recorded in 1968 and never yet officially reissued until now. The album was recorded in the Ingeson studios, who had just bought the newest equipment and thought Speakers were the perfect band to work with it and try to get the best results from the equipment. The Ingeson guys offered the studios to the band for no money, only asking them to mention in the album that it was recorded there, so to make a publicity for the studios. Hence the title of the album "In the marvelous world of Ingeson"!!! Musically, the album is as psychedelic as you may dream from a South American '68 album. With acid guitar, sound effects, playing with repetitive sounds and incisive lyrics in Spanish language. A total masterpiece of weird psychedelia that went nearly unnoticed in Columbia even being the Speakers the bigger name in that country's rock scene of the 60's. What makes this release even better is the deluxe treatment it had.
